I am shocked how little some artists and their managers know. I have been approached by many artists and I find one out of ten who knows what they want and their managers who are clueless. Last week I spoke with five managers and five out of five didn’t have any industry knowledge. The playing is so level now why do you think mainstream artist are leaving labels left and right?’ I’ll tell you, it’s because Indie is where it’s at. This is busi ness and if you want to win you have to learn the rules. There is no guessing, you have to hit the mark.

It takes more than radio play, the mix tape or just doing shows for ten years. It takes knowledge so read everything you can get your hands on, network, market attend workshops, consult with Industry professionals. It’s sad to see artists with so much talent but they can’t conceive that business proceeds talent. Some artists get frustrated so they hire a manager who is guessing as he goes. Artist I’d like to advise you to know something about hiring a manger, before hiring a manager interview him/her, check his/her track record, inquire about his /her outcome, do they have a professional industry networks and marketing skills.

These are just a few basic questions to ask, artists this is your career and like the old cliché goes, “Your only as strong as your strongest link”.

Amy Winehouse’s death is a mystery, it is suspected that Amy had been dead for six before she was found. It is assumed that Winehouse died in her sleep, rigor mortis set in from the time she went bed and the time she was found. The question is, if she was found earlier would she have lived? Reports state that Winehouse was seen talking with a security guard around 10 A.M. Amy told the guard she was going to bed and was found six hours later dead.

The shocking thing is, Winehouse visited her doctor the night before and it appeared that the singer was in good health. Reports state that there was no alcohol or drugs found in Amy’s system and it didn’t appear that the artist committed suicide.

In the past she struggled with drugs and alcohol, however; she fought very hard to rehabilitate and rid her self of drugs and alcohol once and for all. No one ever heard of anyone who died from withdrawals, the mystery is still yet to be solved.

Dominick Wickliffe, better known by his stage name Crooked I, a rapper from Long Beach, California. He is a member of the hip hop group, Slaughterhouse with other members Joe Budden, Joell Ortiz and Royce da 5'9. Slaughterhouse is currently signed to Shady Records Interscope Records. Crooked I is currently CEO of his own record labels, Dynasty Entertainment and C.O.B. Digital as well as Senior Vice President of Treacherous Records. Before starting his own label, he was also signed to Virgin Records and Death Row Records.

Before Crooked I owned his own labels he was signed to Virgin Records and Death Row records Crooked I’s album had not been released, Suge Knight was constantly in and out of jail, and Crooked I's contract had expired by November 2003. He left Death Row in 2004 to start his own label, Dynasty Entertainment.

It was not long after that when Crooked I signed a distribution deal with Treacherous Records/Universal, but more legal trouble from Death Row surfaced, and Crooked I had to stop production for his then titled album, Mama's Boy, which was actually going to be the name of Crooked's second release under Death Row Records. Later on the title of the album changed to Mama's Boy Got a Loaded Gun. In the meantime, Crooked I released the online mix tape, Young Boss Vol. 1 through his official website. The mix tape received critical acclaim throughout the underground Hip-Hop circuit, garnering an impressive "XL" rating by the Hip-Hop publication, XXL Magazine.

After the legal matters settled, Crooked began recording again, and prepping the release of his documentary Life after Death Row. He appeared on compilations such as Yukmouth United Ghettos of America Vol. 2, Sway & King Tech's Back 2 Basics, and on fellow Treacherous Records label mate K. Young's debut album, Learn How to Love. In 2005, the name of Crooked's debut album changed to Boss Music, and he created a buzz with the song, "Boom Boom Clap" in the summer of 2005. He also recorded two songs with producer Storch, “Cali Boyz" and "You're So Bad". In 2006, he released his heavily anticipated mix tape, Young Boss Vol. 2 hosted by DJ Skee, and his DVD, Life after Death Row, followed later that fall.

Crooked I recently interviewed on Slamin Fatbeatz Radio with DJ Puddee. He was poised, conversational and informative. He talked about his experience with the record labels, his own record label and the difference between 100% profit and pennies.
