FROM THE EDITOR

Mubarak Alaykom Al Shahar Sharqawis Ramadan mubarak everyone and welcome to one of our favorite issues of the year where we get to wax on about our love of this month. First off, if you have even a passing interest in dates, you should check out our interview with the godfather of Saudi dates, Dr. Mohammed Al Nuwairan. Aside from satisfying our tummies, the month is first and foremost about nourishing the soul. We sat with storyteller, Noha Al Omari to talk about how she presents the stories of the Prophet (PBUH) and his Companions in a way that connects with the younger generations. We also paid homage to a few of Sharqiya’s most notable mosques to bask in their beauty. We can’t talk about Ramadan without bringing up Gergai’an, which is why we’ve put together for you, dear readers, the ultimate guide to throwing a Gergai’an- themed party at your very home. This month is a time of spirituality, reflection and family. So keep your family close and self closer.

Find out how Cambridge programmes help students from Saudi Arabia get into universities around the world Cambridge International AS & A Levels are recognised as a passport to success in education, university and employment. They are valued by universities around the world as academically rigorous qualifications that equip students with the skills they need to succeed both at university and beyond. Universities tell us that they value the independent research and critical thinking skills that our qualifications develop, as well as the deep subject knowledge. When we asked some of the world’s top universities, including Yale and Harvard, to tell us what they think about Cambridge qualifications, 98% said they give students excellent preparation for university.

“We think that Cambridge international qualifications are a really good preparation for university study. They allow students to specialise in particular subjects and to develop lots of other skills which are really useful for university study – like communication skills, research skills and problem-solving skills.”

“Cambridge International A Level Chemistry provided me with hands-on experience to build a solid understanding of all other sciences, including physics and biology. Students wanting to join a medical or pharmacy school will benefit from the Cambridge International A Level Chemistry syllabus.”

HILTON EMPLOY TALENTED YOUTH

We are Hilton. We are hospitality.

Like clockwork, every morning, the GM of DoubleTree by Hilton Riyadh starts his day by taking a round through the hotel. The GM’s walk is a chance for him to greet all the hotel’s employees before the day starts. After being named best company to work for in KSA, Hilton has chosen Saudi Arabia as a key country to focus their efforts. With many hotels being built in addition to those in operation, Hilton see it as vital that they do all they can to attract young Saudi talent. So, for their youth development week, DoubleTree Hilton invited us to a behind the scenes exclusive. As a temporary employee, I was

From the moment you walk through the hotel doors, you’ll be greeted by smiling faces and a good morning from every other passing employee. As cliché as it sounds, it turns out a hotel like DoubleTree Hilton can also feel like home.

DR staff working behind the scenes with the Hilton chef.

If home is where the heart is, then it’s no surprise the hotel has managed to accomplish that feat. Throughout the back corridors of the hotel, the area guests never get a chance to see, the walls are covered with motivational posters and employee accolades. “You are the heart of Hilton” DR staff going through the house keeping process.

is the phrase that greets employees along with heart shapes on almost every wall. For the skeptics who believe that it takes more than a few posters to make a good work environment, whatever it is that the Hilton is doing, it is working. Whether I was working behind the cooking station, the front desk or even housekeeping, every person I came in contact with had a smile and a hello for me. It was not a coerced obligatory greeting. Everyone, no matter where they stand, receives the same genuine greeting. Put my statements to the test, and the next time you’re in DoubleTree approach the front desk and you’ll see what I mean. If you seem

like an approachable enough person, the guys and girls behind the counter might even throw in a couple of jokes with the obligatory and famous check-in cookie. Throughout my time with DoubleTree I learned that hospitality is not just the name of the industry, it’s the rule of thumb, especially here. It’s not just reserved for the guests either; it’s for your coworkers as well. After all, almost every person I ran into had confessed that the camaraderie in the hotel is akin to that of a family. WHO’S WHO

efficiency, product quality, effective marketing programs inside and outside the country, encouraging creativity and innovation, strengthening the collaboration between all parties and leveraging the dates sector as a key source of national income. Dr. Mohammed Al Nuwairan CEO of the National Center of Palms and Dates (NCPD)

How did you end up running NCPD? It was a long journey, 12 years in the making. After earning both my MSc and PhD in Management Science (manufacturing, logistics, supply chain management), I studied many worldwide cases and worked closely with many governments and private agencies in the United Kingdom and Saudi Arabia. I came back to King Faisal University to work as Assistant Professor at the School of Business, and that’s where NCPD approached me to lead the center.

What do you believe is the role of dates and palm trees in our future?

producers inside and outside the country, searching for the best technology and processes worldwide to increase the efficiency of production and the supply chain process.

Why was it created? To develop the dates sector by concentrating on production

I see dates and palm trees as a great source of income for producers and a rewarding opportunity for investors. They will also contribute to the change in our food choices when opting for a healthier lifestyle. I would definitely call it a promising sector.

Who do you see as the champions of the palms and dates sector?

I would say Qasim Province is at the top, followed by Al Ahsa, then Madinah and finally Kharj.

What’s the most important thing you’d learned during your years abroad that you brought back with you? For me personally, I learned to be a lot more patient. I also realized how crucial customer service and commitment was for business.

If your closest friends and family were to describe you in three words, what would those words be? Hardworking, persistent and ambitious.

What’s your favorite aspect about Ramadan? I always look forward to praying taraweeh and socializing with friends and family. I also enjoy the challenge of pushing myself to work harder during the month, knowing how hard it is to keep productivity up during it.

Finally, what’s your favorite type of date? (Laughs) That’s actually a very hard question to answer, but I can definitely say that my favorite dates around the world are Saudi dates.

SACRED STORIES Changing your life through the power of story. By Haifa Al Owain

When people mention Noha Al Omari, they can’t help but gush over her charm and what a master storyteller she is. We’re not talking about just any stories though. She’s specifically passionate about sharing the story of the Prophet and his Companions, and her “Khuta” project is all about presenting their stories in a fresh way that connects with the younger generations.

Knowledge put a full stop to my confusion. — Noha Al Omari

“Khuta is a platform of courses and online content focused on instilling values within society and promoting positive change in community,” said Al Omari.

“I believe everyone has seeds of good, if they have the motivation and ambition to be better,” she said. Back in the day, Noha didn’t expect to be doing this at all. After earning her second black belt in Karate from the finest dojo in London, she began a deep inner exploration by 26 DESTINATION SHARQIYA JUNE 2017

attending Islamic classes and learning from scholars. Somewhere on her journey of studying Islam and its stories, something just clicked. “This is what I want to do with my life!” she exclaimed, face beaming with joy and confidence.

By the way, Noha’s Khuta team is launching a special Ramadan mini-series on social media, SO DON’T MISS IT!

SOURCE PHOTO/KHUTA.NET

She was self-taught and worked to understand Islam as a whole, without having a formal higher education in it. A loving wife and mother of four girls, throughout her journey her family was her backbone of support and understanding. When asked about the challenges she faced, most were what everyone faces when building their connection with God. The confusion and pain, the social isolation and paradigm shifts. Noha wanted to be reborn, and persevered to find answers. Strengthening her Arabic was also a regular challenge in understanding Islam from the scholars and the Quran itself, and she still strives to build up her skills.

“Unmeasurable joy in sharing.” She sees herself as a lifelong student, and truly enjoys sharing what she learned. Her advice for our readers is to always ask God for complete guidance, to pray without letting your pride get in the way and to persist and open your hearts. "Quran is the guidebook to life," said Noha, and by studying it

with her students and sharing those lessons in classes and online, she works to give that statement the commitment it deserves. She believes it’s important to study Quran, the life of the Prophet and the lives of his Companions and apply all of their teachings within our own lives. Web: khuta.net KhutaNet

Why We Love Ramadan What are you looking forward to the most? What’s Ramadan to you? Is it an opportunity to strengthen your relationship with Allah by fasting and praying, or a chance to reflect on the past year, both spiritually and materialistically? Maybe you want to reconnect with family and strengthen those relationships? Or perhaps you’re thinking broader and want to figure out your place in the community and how to give back to it? To us at Destination Sharqiya, Ramadan is all of the above and more. Irrespective of what Ramadan is to you, we can agree that there are certain aspects of this holy month that are universal; the little things that bind us together in Ramadan and that we love so much.

The aromatic scents

of street food such as tikka, baleela and roasted corn filling the night air.

The self-reflection

each and every one of us feels when we fast, when we pray and when we give, which is the hallmark and purpose of the holy month.

The desire and joy

that comes from spending time together with our families. whether it’s breaking our fast, watching Ramadan TV programs, going to pray together or arguing about which outing has the highest priority – shopping, visiting a relative or watching the game?

An excuse to wear all those pretty jalabiyat every day!

Friends and family

Ramadan futoor staples like gaimat, Vimto and samboosa!

GARGEE’AN! (NON-KHALEEJIS: YOU WOULDN’T UNDERSTAND.)

Seeing the spirit of Ramadan everywhere.

RAMADAN ACROSS BORDERS Unity through drums, lanterns and bathing. By Zonaira Chaudhary

Muslims around the world are celebrating the most awaited month of the Islamic Calendar. Thanks to the multitude of cultures that observe Ramadan, the spirit of enthusiasm, generosity and spirituality comes out in the most beautiful and unique ways. Ramadan rituals around the globe (from the exotic islands of Thailand to the ancient civilization of Egypt) still embody a sense of unity across any cultural differences between the Muslim populace.

A popular tourist destination, Muslims form the second largest religious group of this Southeast Asian country. Thai Muslims raise money all year round in each city or village to construct a new mosque during Ramadan. Another interesting custom is that Thai Muslim families offer sacrifices on the first day to mark the beginning of this auspicious month.

TURKEY

Turkey is an Islamic country filled with diverse ethnic traditions. An old Ramadan custom is to wake up Muslims for suhoor by beating drums before the dawn prayers. The drummers are dressed in Ottoman costumes as the tradition traces back to that empire. 30 DESTINATION SHARQIYA JUNE 2017

THAILAND

INDONESIA

Indonesia, the world’s largest island country, is also home to the world’s largest Muslim population. To greet the holy month, Muslims perform bathing rituals known as Balimau or Padusan in the River Kawung, the Kalianda Sea, as well as various springs, believing that it will purify them before they start fasting. The word Balimau is from the Minangkabau language, literally meaning “bathe with shampoo”. To continue the ancestral ritual, straw or rice-straw ash is used for shampooing, while other areas use limes to bathe with. The ceremony starts in the afternoon and ends at sundown (maghrib time).

EGYPT

The famous traditional lanterns that are lit all over the land of the Nile during Ramadan is a vibrant sight. The tradition dates back to the year 969 when the Egyptians greeted Fatimid Caliph Al Mu’izz liDin Allah in Cairo by lighting lanterns. A few decades later, the Caliph Al Hakim bi-Amr Allah wanted the streets of Cairo to be well illuminated with these lanterns, a custom which has continued for over a thousand years. Even now, young children can be seen carrying colorful lanterns and singing songs in the street. DESTINATIONKSA.COM

Pro-tip Get your henna on, ladies, but make sure you book your henna artist in advance.

I know we as adults want to have all the fun, but we can’t forget that the focus is the kids. So, for boys: a thobe with a wizaar wrapped around their waist if you’re going for a truly Sharqawi look (otherwise replace the wizaar with a traditional black velvet vest with golden thread trimmings). For girls: It’s all about the headgear; whether it’s a bokhnag or a golden haama, you can’t go wrong. Ladies can go for a simple thobe nashel. The true meaning of Gergai’an: the goodie bags! Where to buy goodie bags from: For pre-packaged goodie bags, check out these creative Instagram stores. imaginarygift, zdesigns_sa a_to_z_party For candies and other old-school goodies from when we were kids, you have to visit Dakat Al Thekrayat in Khobar.

THE ART OF

HENNA

Our favorite body art by our favorite henna artists. By Noura Al Joaib

Practiced for centuries, henna art is full of rich tradition. In the Middle East, Africa, India and Pakistan, henna art remains a popular fixture in weddings and religious celebrations. The beautiful and intricate patterns have even gained popularity in the West over the past few decades.

Henna of the World Indian/Pakistani:

Mandalas with heavy intricate patterns along the fingers is a common Indian/Pakistani henna design, along with paisley designs.

Khaleeji: Khaleeji designs consist of floral patterns, usually repeated in different sizes, with fluid lines starting from the wrist to the fingers. North African: Patterns here

are popular for the geometric lines and angles. The motifs are usually applied to the back of the hand or fingers only.

White Henna: White henna

is a contemporary take on the

beautiful tradition, mostly applied in delicate lacelike patterns.

The Artist

Here are a few of our favorite designs, as we get ready for Ramadan: Ghazal is a beautician and artist from Pakistan and has lived in Khobar most of her life. She picked up the practice out of love for the art form and taught herself the different application methods. Aside from conventional henna art, Ghazal specializes in colorful henna. ghazals_art

Maryam is from Qatif and has been a henna artist for over a decade, starting at the age of 16. Maryam learned the art through practicing on friends and family before becoming a sought-after henna professional specialized in a range of designs. maryam_shbyb

Break Fast Like a

KHALEEJI

If you’re anything like me, when you hear Jeleep you’ll look up the word. The rest of you already know that jeleep means a “water well” in Khaleeji culture. The word jeleep is also derived from jalab, which means “to bring”. The cozy and traditional Khaleeji decor at Jeleep gives off the perfect Ramadan vibe. Jeleep offers a mix of Khaleeji, oriental and international dishes.

We started off with the best mezza spread around – including hummus, motabal and stuffed grape leaves. Next we had their cream of mushroom which was, well, creamy and delicious. For the main course, we tried the sweetheart of all traditional dishes: jareesh, topped with lamb shanks. The jareesh was the perfect consistency, reminding us of home-cooked goodness, and the lamb was tender. We also had another traditional favorite but with a twist: marqooq pie. An ensemble of vegetables cooked inside a

pie-like creation, this hearty dish will leave you satisfied. The toffee date cake is rumored to be the best in town, and boy were those rumors on point. With a side of Arabic coffee, this dessert hit the right balance of spongy date cake and decadent toffee sauce. Jeleep brought on the good stuff so be sure to treat yourself and your loved ones to an unforgettable futoor this Ramadan. Kelaija

The national cookie of Al Qasim, Kelaija comes in several variations. The most popular and our favorite are the ones filled with dates.

Aseeda

This decadent Arab dish is quite popular. Usually a winter treat, this high-energy sweet goodness

requires few ingredients. The most important ingredient, of course, is the dibs (date molasses).

DATING ADVICE

These kinds of dates always make things better. By Noura Al Joaib

Dates

No table is complete without the original delight. Whether you dip them in white chocolate or stuff them with walnuts and pistachios, we can all agree that dates are the best.

Areeka

This originally Yemeni concoction is a combination of traditional bread, ghee, honey and dates. Served hot and sizzling.

Ma’amoul

An oldie but a goodie, Ma'amoul are shortbread pastries stuffed with, you guessed it, dates! Although other variations can include pistachios or walnuts.

Dibs

Date molasses or syrup is made from cooked-down dates. Its popularity peaks during Ramadan as it’s the perfect sauce to drizzle over the month’s favorite dumpling: gaimat!

Khobaz Ahmar

This popular bread hails from Al Ahsa and is both nutritious and yummy. This flat pita-like bread is made from wholewheat flour, dates and black seeds.

One Plus One = Delicious Traditional food combos to inspire you this month.

EDITOR'S PICK

By Hajer Al Alwan

Dates and Tahina Sharqawis can’t survive without their dates, most especially when you need to break fast. If you haven’t tried this yet, put a little bowl of tahina to dip your dates in. Pair it with a piping hot cup of Arabic coffee and you’re good to go.

Jameed (Lime Molasses) and Kabsa

Wadma, Limes and Rocca

My grandmother introduced me to kabsa mixed with jameed; another traditional combo from Al Ahsa. Add a tablespoon of jameed (lime molasses) and a few spoons of sugar to 3-4 cups of kabsa. Add water to adjust the sourness to your taste.

Wadma is made using a young fish dried and crushed. Then you drench it in some lime juice, toss it with a bunch of arugula and you have yourself a classic combo that tastes simply delicious.

66 DESTINATION SHARQIYA JUNE 2017

Tea and Luqah The refreshing mix of red tea and luqah water – which is the liquid from distilled teltal (basically palm tree flowers) – is beloved by all Sharqawis for its distinct flavor and endless benefits.

Lumi (Fermented Limes) and Harees Soup We all love our harees soup a bit sour, but if you haven’t tried it with the Hasawi original lumi juice, then you’re missing out! In Al Ahsa, lumi is traditionally made from lime juice mixed with black pepper and left out in the sun until fermented. The sour and slightly spicy flavor of this lumi hares soup is a particular favorite of mine.

Khubz Ahmar and Cheese This traditional bread that’s mainly made of dates and whole-wheat flour was reintroduced when bakers in Sharqiya (Al Ahsa specifically) started stuffing it with cream cheese. We tell, we show and you judge!

SIMPLY SUHOOR Go-to guide for a quick and easy suhoor. By Zonaira Chaudry

What’s one of your worst fears in Ramadan? If you’re like us, it’s not waking up for suhoor or just waking up five minutes before dawn with no time to prepare something to eat. Well, here are a few quick, power food ideas for your next fuss-free scrumptious and fulfilling suhoor: A favorite breakfast, eggs are an inexpensive and nutritious alternative that can be made in a variety of ways. EGGS

YOGHURT

A favorite tried and true pre-dawn meal. It’ll keep you energized and full throughout the day. Eat it on its own or chop in some fruit or dates for an enhanced tangy taste! If all else fails, there is always flavored yoghurt to turn to.

OATMEAL

Oatmeal, being low in fat and a rich in fiber is a quick and healthy choice before fasting. You can make it the evening before, store it in the fridge and heat it when required. For extra taste and texture, add some berries or nuts on top. You can also opt for Instant oatmeal; just mix it with some milk, heat it and it’s ready!

MEZZE

Middle Eastern mezze is famous all over the world. When you’re pressed for time, this is an excellent alternative for suhoor that lets you avoid any cooking stress. Enjoy humus, labnah with olives and pita bread and you are good to go. If you don’t mind a very quick bout of cooking, toss in some foul for the full mezze experience.

THE FAST AND THE FIT The best time to exercise in Ramadan.

Now, this will differ from person to person, and with Ramadan being in the summer, the extreme heat and effort will still expose you to heat exhaustion, dehydration and fatigue, thereby defeating the purpose of trying to be healthier during this month. I recommend choosing one of the following periods, depending on your age, health status and your exercise goal: 70 DESTINATION SHARQIYA JUNE 2017

• Do it an hour to an hour and a half prior to futoor. This will help minimize the time before you break your fast and compensate the loss of body fluids, mineral salts and energy. • Do it 3-4 hours after futoor to make sure the body has completed the process of digestion. • What I like to do is have a very light futoor of seven dates (natural workout fuel) and one liter of water, then workout right after. That kind of futoor will raise your blood sugar and give you sufficient energy to make it through your workout.

Don’t forget to warm up!

STAFF PHOTO/ALZAHRA AL DAWOOD

It’s the eternal conundrum: how do you exercise during Ramadan? Sure, you can do it after breaking fast which is technically better when it comes to athletic performance, since it helps limit tiredness and fatigue. However, that doesn’t mean we can’t exercise while we’re fasting.

In general, I advise to exercise at any time you feel comfortable without experiencing too much fatigue. I also recommended keeping the workouts short - about 45 to 60 minutes maximum - during Ramadan. Avoid consuming fatty foods like samboosa. If you’re craving them, at least bake them instead.

TIME IS SACRED Learn the art of time management during Ramadan. By Nourah Al Khunaini

Between fewer working hours, needing more time for worship and trying to keep up with the overflowing social calendar, it’s no surprise that time becomes the most valuable (and scarce) resource during the month of Ramadan. Use the following tips to get a handle on your time this holy month: THREE THINGS TO AVOID Procrastination, multi-tasking and complex recipes. All you’ll end up with is a lot of stress, very little productivity and a lingering sense of being overwhelmed. Who wants that while they’re fasting? SET GOALS FOR YOURSELF AND MAKE THEM CLEAR Be specific about what you want to achieve. Break your goals down into digestible steps to make it easier for you to accomplish.

PLAN YOUR DAY IN ADVANCE Allocate some time for your personal goals, work and spirituality. Keeping a planner can definitely but you should make use of it.

PRIORITIZE AND SACRIFICE You’ll have to sacrifice some of your usual activities in Ramadan. Figure out your priorities and find the balance that works for you.

DON’T PASS UP SUHOOR Skipping this meal is only going to punish your future self the next day with zero energy and a lot more stress. You don’t want that.

72 DESTINATION SHARQIYA JUNE 2017

• Try to work on tasks that need a lot of focus and concentration early because that’s when you have the most energy. • Take advantage of the early hours of the day when you’re up for suhoor. Might as well use your time efficiently.

PLAN YOUR MEALS Write down what you want to make for each day of the week. If you can prepare for the meal a day before, do it. You’ll be thankful you did later.

A HEALTHY AND HYDRATED RAMADAN Be kind to your tummy! By Haseena Bano

Like most of us, fasting probably makes it difficult to think about your futoor and suhoor meals beyond opportunities to eat, let alone as ways to try and be healthy. But, did you know Ramadan can be the perfect opportunity to follow a natural lifestyle that boosts up your health?

WATER IS MEDICINE

Pure water is the world’s first and foremost medicine. Keep yourself hydrated with an ample quantity of water and natural fluids (like fresh fruit juices) this Ramadan. You should be very cautious with your fluid intake and how you keep yourself hydrated.

Carbonated drinks like sodas contain processed sugars which is a major cause of obesity.

2. Make sure suhoor has a good combination of complex carbohydrates and proteins.

KEEP AN EYE ON YOUR FUTOOR AND SUHOOR

3. Try to always drink a full

Futoor is meant for eating our favorite foods to maximum capacity and satisfying our cravings after 12-16 hours of fasting, isn’t it? Sort of. You should satiate your hunger but you have to be extra vigilant or else risk developing some very unhealthy eating habits like overeating.

As far as diet is concerned your diet plan should have the following attributes: 1. Limit the salt intake during suhoor.

glass of water at the beginning and end of suhoor.

4. Minimize or cut out all fried foods. 5. Eat in moderation always. 6. Spread out your futoor meal. Break your fast with some dates and water, then take a break of 5-10 minutes before eating some more.

RAMADAN IS ABOUT SIMPLICITY, SO SIMPLIFY YOUR MEALS.

IN BAHRAIN

RAMADAN, ISLAND-STYLE What it’s like to celebrate Ramadan in Bahrain.

80 DESTINATION SHARQIYA JUNE 2017

The summer lies in wait here in Bahrain, with the days getting longer, hotter, dustier and more humid. Water will soon no longer run cool from the tap and the days of wandering through the villages and souqs will be over. Above all else though, a festive anticipation for Ramadan is already bubbling away – childish excitement tempered by a slight solemnity. This month is for spending time with family and friends, reflecting on life and devoting extra time to faith. The tiny island of Bahrain is a large melting pot of cultures, and it’s a true testament to the tolerance and acceptance of its people that everyone can truly feel a part of this holy month. For many of the expatriate Muslim population here, celebrations begin fifteen days before Ramadan, with Shabe-Baraat. This day marks the coming of thousands of angels descending to Earth and taking everyone’s good deeds up to Allah. People believe that on this day, decisions are made about life, death and luck, so people get together to share food and gifts and offer dua, which often lasts well in to the night.

Yes, strings of light are a Ramadan essential in Bahrain too!

When the month begins, the fasting begins. Restaurants close and the whole island takes on a sleepy feel. Everything slows down as people spend more time at home and with family. Fasts are broken at sunset, often with dates, laban and water, followed by a good meal that usually include harees or thareed – hearty dishes made with beef or lamb. Halfway through the month, children have their own festive event with Gargee’an, a night where they dress up in traditional jalabiyas and thobes and walk from home to home to get sweets and treats. Nowadays, a lot of indoor parties are held instead and shops are full of treats to dish out at this time. As Ramadan is a time for giving, many people here in Bahrain – whatever their culture – participate in charitable work. There are many fundraising ghabgas (gatherings) and a lot of people donate whatever 82 DESTINATION SHARQIYA JUNE 2017

they can, be it food, money or time to those less fortunate than themselves. However, the most beautiful thing about this month is the feeling of acceptance everywhere. Locals and expatriates alike fast together, pray together and share their lives’ moments. The nonMuslim community are often invited to iftar feasts and Eid celebrations; giving them a chance to learn more about the people they are living with and their rich heritage and culture,

and to understand more about the faith that brings so many people together. The Author:

The True Taste of South India Two Spoons shares their experience at Swagat.

As always, the meal is fantastic. Full of flavor and spice without being so hot you can’t taste anything (a pet peeve of mine). The food is filling and the bread is so good that it is next to impossible to leave any crumbs behind. The waiter comes around halfway through with a pan of rice from the kitchen to top up everyone’s plates and beams with genuine delight when we enthuse about how delicious the food is. We finish off our lunch with two cups of the strongest black tea you can imagine and pay our bill (handwritten of course) before making our way back outside in to the sweltering sun of the souq.

One of our favorite little places in Bahrain is this vegetarian restaurant, Swagat, sandwiched be-tween a couple of tailors in Manama Souq.

The host comes over with a grin that spreads from ear to ear and welcomes us in - remembering us from our last visit which was at least eight months ago if not a year. “Long time, sir!” he says to Mo, ushering us to the same table we used the last time. We have the laminated menu in front of us, but unless you already know what dahi sev puri actually is, it’s fairly useless when it comes to ordering. So, we do the only thing you can do – ask!

We start off with thali (a plate with a few small different curries) and a masala dosa. Halfway between a crispy pancake and a Sri Lankan hopper, this huge folded parcel of spicy potatoes hits the spot every time.
