FROM THE EDITOR Editor-in-Chief Enas Hashani Managing Director Maria Mahdaly Executive Editor Bassma Al Toaimi

We’ve missed you, Riyadhis! For the lot of you, you’re probably heading back from vacation wondering what you’re going to do now. Well that’s what we are here for my friends. In this issue, we focused on positive influences, in the form of human beings that are an example to us all. Learn from Almuhannad Alhassoun and be a force for good, seek out guidance and mentorship to better yourself, or take a page out of our young achievers article and put your pedal (your ideas) to the metal (to application). School’s just around the corner. Calm down Riyadhis, we can hear your groan over the pages of the magazine. If you need a little cheering up, check out our Riyadh college article where we debunk common myths about the college experience. We’ve also reviewed and tested kids’ meals and kids’ playgrounds in restaurants so you don’t have to. Check out our dining section to find out which fast-food restaurant has the best toy, or which restaurant has the best play pin. Until next month Riyadhis. Remember to wear sunscreen! Impolite Hospitality at Airports An airport is a country’s first impression. So, what does it mean when airport staff, a representation of the people, are rude to incoming visitors. Here’s the thing, folks, we’re suppose to treat our guests and fellow humans with a certain measure of respect and not “manhandle” them. This is an airport, not a cattle ranch.

Children develop the desire to continue to learn and the tools to become independent life long learners. Traditionally science and math have been taught from a book, with a few experiments, and math games if the student had an extra special teacher. Through the MLS STEM program, students begin each day with a question: “How do you think planes fly?” “Why does the burner get hot on the stove?” How can we create an object out of sticks that will float?” Together students discuss various possibilities and then break off into groups to research possible answers and then design a project that demonstrates the culmination of this knowledge. This learning is continued in the classroom in all of the other subject areas. Students incorporate the math skills that they have learned in planning and engineering their projects and then write various types of reports reflecting and explaining their research and conclusions. The teacher facilitates the students learning by teaching them how to form proper questions, decipher and organize their research and then synthesize the information.

MLS invites you to come see this work in action at their school. Go for a tour and learn more about the holistic, 21st century education at their school.

THE FIX

Saudi app Morni is your summer road savior. By Mohammed Shamsi

“I got a flat tire.” That’s how Salman Al Suhaibaney, founder and CEO of Morni, described his eureka moment, in August 2013, when he first thought of his now thriving app. “I couldn’t fix the tire myself, so I drove to the closest gas station looking for a tow truck. I couldn’t find any. I thought to myself ‘Why can’t it be as 12 DESTINATION RIYADH AUGUST 2017

easy as Uber?’ Being stuck in the middle of nowhere, I was reminded how Uber tracks your location exactly, making the process much easier. This was the problem we were trying to solve.” Towing cars, tire repairs (on the spot), battery charging and replacement, car transportation, plus petrol pumping (for those who forget to fill their gas tanks) are the main services provided by Morni, who aim to become “the automotive hub” of the region, as Al Suhaibaney put it (Morni is now active across the GCC, along with Jordan, Lebanon and Egypt). Uber was the inspiration. Morni used a similar business model. “That way, we can track the quality of the experience with our customers while ensuring that no abuses happen, pricing-wise.” Development began in April 2014, launching in July 2015.

But it was worth it, because now we know our code inside out.” “We jumped off a cliff, building our wings on the way down,” was how Al Suhaibaney put it. “Today, we’re better, faster, smoother and more user-friendly.” “Our success was from word of mouth; from customers who are using the service. It seems like social media influencers carry a lot of weight these days. According to Dictionary.com, a media influencer is “a person who has the power to influence many people, through social media or traditional media.”

So what is that power really being used for?

Some influencers use their power to line their proverbial pockets with endorsement money, choosing to promote products for the highest bidder. We could argue all day about the merits of this type of influencer and the service they provide for companies or brands looking for advertising. You could even argue that in a society that trusts word of mouth or referrals over anything, influencers are a godsend. However, as Spiderman’s uncle, Ben, once said, “With great power comes great responsibility,” and we can’t help but feel some of them aren’t exactly being responsible. Not all influencers are cut from the same stone. Some choose to use their platforms to discuss social issues that they believe are important to their audience as well as make a tidy buck on the side.

making money. They call him “Muhanad al insani,” meaning Muhanad the humanitarian. What has he done to earn that title? Well, he’s an ambassador for the Pink Caravan, a UAE based Breast Cancer Awareness initiative, as KSA’s representative. He’s also the founder of the Woman of the Year Award. Growing up around strong women did more than a little for Alhassoun. His powerhouse aunt, Madawi Alhassoun, is one of the first women to run for office. The successful businesswoman and member of Jeddah’s Chamber of Commerce is one of Al Hassoun’s biggest idols, along with princess Diana, Angelina Jolie, Audrey Hepburn and Malala.

In 2012, he logged onto Twitter with a purpose. “I wanted to provide content that can help elevate thought in society,” he explained, “I wanted to leave a positive print.” He started out by sharing stories about people whose accomplishments he believed had been overlooked. Success stories, inspirational ones, whatever made him proud. Basically, he started Angelina Jolie-ing it.

Alhassoun’s core work for the past nine years has been in SABIC, the single largest public company is Saudi Arabia. He’s the senior sales manager of the Middle East as well as a social media activist.

And then there’s the third and rarest type. A type so rare that they deserve their own article, the philanthropist. Very few people dedicate their entire power of influence to help others and we believe they deserve a DR hats off. Alhassoun is a social media personality with a purpose. The crown prince of Bahrain at the UN-organized International Youth Conference in Bahrain, as well as by Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, the head of the UAE’s Ministry of Culture, Youth, and Social Development have thanked and honored Alhassoun for his efforts.

“The most important thing is credibility,” he says. Every story he posts is carefully selected and curated. In fact, Alhassoun quickly became a trustworthy source, with major news outlets lifting stories directly from his timeline. Several channels picked up the story of the recent recipient of his online Woman of the Year Award, Saudi nurse Maha Al Sahaly, including Rotana and MBC. 16 DESTINATION RIYADH AUGUST 2017

His social media presence enabled him to roll up his sleeves and have more hands on experiences such as opening one of the largest water wells in Kenya as well as aiding Syrian refugees in Turkey.

One of the experiences he holds dear is representing Saudi Arabia in the Pink Caravan initiative, which is a mobile breast cancer-testing unit that paroled the streets of Dubai with a pink clad parade and Alhassoun in-tow. “While we were walking in the dead heat, a woman ran out of house, crying, and began hugging us. A common thread arose early that quickly became the niche of which Alhassoun is known for: women’s rights and issues. It’s no surprise there since strong and empowered women surrounded him and most of his icons are women.

Whatever motives you may assume he has, it is a fact that he has never received any compensation of any kind of coverage or support. As a fulltime employee, Alhassoun uses his vacation days almost entirely on his humanitarian trips, and more times than not, he has had to pay for all his expenses straight out of his own pocket. Dedicating your influence, your time and yourself to a greater cause is great purpose. A purpose we commend Almuhanad Alhassoun for.

Debunked College Myths By Areeb Alshathri

The Riyadh college experience is uniquely, well, Riyadh. So where is a high school senior suppose to turn to for advice about the world they’re about to step into? Here, of course. The DR team is about to debunk some of the most prevalent college stereotypes and concerns.

“You’ll meet friends that you’ll keep for a long time.” Yeah, but I already met them before. They are literally the same people I went to school with my entire life. Riyadh’s social scene can seem like its the size of a pea. Most people are at most three degrees of separation from each other. 22 DESTINATION RIYADH AUGUST 2017

“College is when you become an adult”

Sure, an adult. An adult that doesn't pay rent can’t cook a meal or do laundry.

“College is a time of exploration”

Explore where you can sneak a cigarette without getting caught, explore where the quietest area to study is, and of course explore how long you can survive on coffee and energy drinks.

“You’ll miss it when you leave.”

Most people look back on their time in college with a sense of nostalgia - mostly for the days when you can miss a deadline with barely a negative repercussion, but nostalgia nonetheless. So our parting words of wisdom are: Live it up, the good and the bad. This is your chance to make mistakes and learn from them.

“College is the best time of your life”

Hate to burst your bubble, but a lot of the time it actually isn’t. College is just a single chapter in the your story and though it might seem like the climax, when you leave and look at it through the rearview mirror, it’ll just keep getting smaller and smaller.

STAFF PHOTO/YARA JAN

Whatever tired clichés exist about university life are out in the world, Riyadh is different.

The moment you realize you still need to look decent, but college doesn’t allow that. — Reema Al Rashid, PSU

The time my dad had to sign a makeshift photo ID of the driver so they know I’m not being kidnapped.

When every other sector gets the day off for a storm except universities, because college students are amphibians and can survive in water.

When you have a dress code in college… The black skirt. — Yara Jan, PNU

— Abeer Al Shathri, YU

— Sara Al Saif, KSU

YOU KNOW YOU’RE A COLLEGE STUDENT IN When your coffee cup melts on the way to class.

RIYADH...

— Ahmed Nasir, PSU

When your professor forgets that he’s suppose to be teaching in English. — Taha Khursheed, PSU

Bottomline...

Take advantage of the last few carefree years you got in you. Take it easy and live it up. Don’t spend the next four years of your life coasting by. Don’t make the mistake of dedicating your time to figure out what you want to be, use it to figure out who your are and what you stand for. And whenever you feel down remember that DR is around to recommend the best comfort food. DESTINATIONKSA.COM 23

DIARIES OF A LAZY PERSON Guide to Nieces and Nephews Aunting/uncling is basically parenting but for lazy people. By Areeb Al Shathri

It’s true if you think about it. If done right, you get all the joy of watching a person develop and the love that comes with that, but none of the icky poo and saving for college stuff. A lazy shortcut. 24 DESTINATION RIYADH AUGUST 2017

I’ve been aunting on and off for about 10 years now, and I’m going to assume, as all other aunts and uncles before me, that I know better and let you in on some shortcuts to getting the best for and out of your part-time child.

If you’re having a bad day you better not show it when you see them. Unless you live with your part-time children (which is a contradiction at best), their interactions with you are limited. If you’re in a bad mood and they’re around put your day aside and act your way through it. They should be the highlight of your day.

SULTAN AL MOUSA Writer, Storyteller, Influencer The bestselling Saudi author talks about going for your passion. By Ghada Al Omran and Sultana Al Attas

Sultan Al Mousa is still deeply astonished as to how far his three books had brought him. One of the few Saudi authors who successfully crosses fiction with history and mythology, he may well be one of the best writers of this generation.

A new wave is created for something that was once ignored and abandoned… It’s resurrecting… it’s definitely inspiring and educational to see that it’s opening doors to greater things.

What was your job before becoming an author?

What’s your advice for young writers?

How would you describe your writing style?

Initially, I hoped that ancient civilization and mythology would be my majors, as I had the passion for it. However, many people constantly said that this choice had a limited pathway in my future. So, I chose to major in business administration.

When I started, I went through two phases: first, receiving negative remarks and denial; second, acceptance, which occurred when people realized that my work is positive for our community and educational.

This process of evolving is triggered by everything: constructive criticism, experience, moods, and even with my pen! After writing everything, I’d ask myself questions that can help improve what I have written, like make it more comprehendible or less agitating.

But, my passion for history was fulfilled through writing, and contrary to what others thought, this path was highly fruitful to me, socially and financially. So I advise people to go for their passion.

How did you start writing? I started writing at a very young age. It all started from blogs. Then, I moved to larger media platforms and started writing for local newspaper columns. Finally, in 2004, I decided to write a book.

What can new readers expect from you? New readers will experience confusion with the language or jargons that I use. So, I would like them to know that, in a way, my books are targeted towards them, because I would like them to experience a new trail of ideas and thoughts.

To future writers: At some point in your life, you will be criticized, constructively or destructively; you need to be prepared for that. Some of the constructive critiques actually build you up so don’t hide away from something that will make you stronger. It is important to have references. There are people whom you can consult to get references. I often go through main sectors (experts) when I want to talk about specific aspects in my book, such as, universities that associates with my specific ideas.

What inspired you to merge historical events with fiction? Imagination is the key to link different events. The storyline of “The Perfect Woman” is pretty realistic, but, I’ve created imaginary elements, like emotions, actions and suspense, to link the events together.

Besides being an exceptional writer, Al Mousa is a known Snapchat influencer. He recites ancient storylines and explains them to his followers, leaving them in awe.

FUN FACT “The Perfect Woman’s” effect has reached far and wide, so much so that it has been used as a central theme for an arts and visual exhibition by students at Al Taif University.

FYI:

Al Mousa’s next book will be about historical events.

In between the reader becomes intimate with the rest of the Yacoubs and the key moments in their life that define them. What’s notable about “Salt Houses” is Alyan’s portrayal of how even wealthy and prosperous families are deeply affected by war and its disruptive nature. This is not a story of poverty, tents and deprivation. It’s a story that shows that privilege does not discount the turmoil of loss. It’s a story that’s easy to get lost in because the love, loss and hope felt by the characters is all too real. And above all, when you filter out the sociopolitical conditions you’re left with raw human emotions that we all taste in life. Cherishing family above all else is a dominant theme in Alyan’s poetic novel. Because of war and the resulting ripples, the characters are often faced with situations that make them stand back and appreciate the family they have left, while remembering those they lost. Like all great literary stories, this one houses a secret too - a bundle of letters that were never sent. This is a book that will challenge you as a reader and also give you a story to remember.

ARTISTRY CONNECT A PLATFORM FOR ARTISTS AND ART LOVERS Young duo creates digital art platform. By Jou Pabalate

network of artists, art collectors, and art.

What do you think of the art community in Saudi Arabia, particularly in Riyadh?

The art scene is currently expanding with a lot of new emerging artists and world renowned artists. Saudi Arabia, Riyadh in particular, is beginning to acknowledge artists and give them a chance to display their work in multiple growing galleries. Art, in our opinion, is slowly gaining the fame and acknowledgement that it deserves and we, as supporters of art, want to spread it even wider to reach all kinds of people.

Who are the folks behind Artistry Connect?

Omar Abdulrahman Al Mutlaq, an accountant who recently graduated in May from Prince Sultan University. Maram Khalid Al Nemer, an emerging artist, a senior student at Prince Sultan University studying Interior Design, College of Engineering.

What’s the inspiration behind this project? What 32 DESTINATION RIYADH AUGUST 2017

do you plan to achieve or impact with this website?

Our main inspiration is simply art. And we aim to create an elite platform for all artists. Artistry Connect focuses on connecting art collectors with their favorite artists and art pieces. The platform is also concerned with connecting people and informing them about upcoming events in all the regions. We also plan to create a close worldwide

Where do you see yourselves taking this project to in the years to come?

We are aiming to connect our artistic platform with the GCC starting with Saudi Arabia, no doubt. All artists in that region will be recognized and supported. Artistry Connect will help people know about any upcoming art events happening in the country. We, hopefully, plan on expanding to include many other countries. We aspire to create one platform that houses art pieces and artists where they all can be connected worldwide.

How do you plan to sustain the initiative?

We plan on sustaining it by arranging exhibitions, workshops, art galleries, studio visits, talks, auctions, and many other events for those who enjoy art, create it, or collect it. Our platform will not only be “online based” we plan to reach out to all the talented people, their art, and the people who appreciate it, where they can be connected and reach out to one another in person as well.

What do you think are the challenges art and artists face in Saudi Arabia and

what can be done to solve them?

Many people in Saudi Arabia appreciate art, but simultaneously a lot don’t. The art community is small compared to other communities. Not a lot of people understand the importance and significance of art, and so this can be challenging for many artists. Reaching out to the part of society that doesn’t care much for art isn’t easy. But we hope that this will change over time. Email: info@artistryconnect.co Web: artistryconnect.co

WE ARE ALL INSANE Highlights of a sit down with actor and writer Aml Al Harbi. By Nadia Sakkal

What is "Mamsous"?

Arabic for “deranged,” "Mamsous" is a raw, fictitious documentary that takes us into the world of three Saudi fighters of mental illness, specifically excessive anxiety, depression and panic attacks.

Who is Aml?

“I am a human being,” preferring not to categorize herself in any way. Life, she says, has kicked her out. So she has become an external observer, who will not return to the world that has rejected her. Arguing that we have an overload of information, she seeks new thoughts, beyond the boring masks we wear every day. And in order to compensate for the oxygen she has inhaled all the time she spent thinking,

34 DESTINATION RIYADH AUGUST 2017

Emirate director, Shatha Al Ameri, arrived in Saudi Arabia seeking her cast members; it wasn’t long before Al Harbi’s name came up, as she had built a reputation on social media, as someone who had constant depression. And, by coincidence, while she was on

shoot, the heroine had been through episodes of depression, which were caught on tape. "Mamsous" takes us back into the narrators’ initial experiences with their illnesses and the feelings and thoughts they witnessed. Al Harbi describes, for example, she sees the animal version of people and, consequently, becomes intolerant to any human interaction. Instead, she prefers to unify with the place she is in, like a chameleon unites with colors of trees. In our interview, Al Harbi added “the discussion was very honest; it was spontaneous.” Its bravery earned it the best short film award at the Dubai International Film Festival. It is also being used as a classic case study at the Queen’s University Belfast. Remembering those days, she learned “we are all insane.”

her output will be to talk about mental illness and give voice to those who don’t fit in. Al Harbi further elaborates that we have so many examples of people who have succeeded in life. To help those who fall under stigmatized categories, she is willing to be an example of what it means to have failed.

What is "0.9 Ampere"?

Al Harbi’s novel, which will be published abroad soon, is titled after the degree of electricity that transforms a person from insanity to sanity.

depression, that will be great,” Al Harbi confesses. Then, she continues, she wishes to expose the culture and attitude of addiction.

It “narrates the mind and soul of every person,” beyond geographical boundaries, to come to the conclusion that we are the result of concrete civilization.

Al Harbi wants fighters of mental illness to know they are not alone in the battle, that there are thousands with them who understand their struggle. The daring and brave storyteller hopes her efforts will “shatter beliefs of closure and intimidation.”

At the center of "0.9 Ampere" is a woman completely bored of mankind, leading her to live in isolation. She creates a world of her own, where the objects surrounding her have life. She becomes addicted to her realm, of which she and her parents are in total denial. Al Harbi hopes to vex viewers with the shocking images. Her ambition is that "Mamsous" spreads until ordinary citizens can relate to the subject of mental illness. The end result? "Many positive creations will come from this suffering."

When the heroine is diagnosed with addiction, she undergoes a long journey of treatment; spiritually, mentally and physically. On her path, she has suicidal thoughts, thinking she is giving herself life, because life is death. “If I can lighten, even if just for one hour, a person in

KIDDIE MEALS Get the best bang for your buck! By Areeb Al Shathri

McDonald’s Happy Meal

Burger King

KFC

Ah! The trusty ol’ happy meal. Very few things make a child happier than Mickey D’s large golden arches.

YES, Burger King, yes! This is how you do it right. Dear other fast-food restaurants, please take note. Every boy likes to think he's a prince, so of course they'll go for the King Jr. Meal over any meal.

We asked Colonel Sanders for his go to kids' meal and he delivered. Though, we're not sure what exactly makes it a kid's meal per say.

Portions: Not suitable for adults. 3/4 Toy: Happy meals have always had brilliant toys. 4/4 Bonus: No bonuses.

Portions: Enough for children and small stomached adults. Toy: A Troll’s toy is relevant – with the release of the movie – as well as gender neutral. 5/4 Bonus: A clean design.

60 DESTINATION RIYADH AUGUST 2017

Portion: One piece of chicken and fries was quite fulfilling. 4/4 Toy: None. Bonus: This is not a bonus as much as it is a drawback, but we fail to see what makes this a kid's meal. No fun toy makes your kid a very sad boy.

What’s more Saudi than Kudu? Well a lot of things, but Kudu’s definitely up there when it comes to fast-food. We try and always root for these guys as the underdog of every race, but it doesn’t seem to work.

I don’t care what anyone says, Herfy has always and will always continue to kill it. To be fair, I think my love for Herfy is a direct result of my parents preferring it over other fast-food joints.

I mean… Really, guys? Hardee's really needs to update its kid’s meal. I think they’ve been rocking

Portions: The burger was smaller than the fries, which is quite a feat. 2/4 Toy: No toy, but they did have an extra cool 3D cup and coaster. 0/4 Bonus: You can substitute the fries with veggies.

Portions: Good enough for an 11-year old. 3/4 Toy: Less of a toy more of a keychain, but points for nostalgia. Go Sonic! Bonus: The default drink is juice, which is a big plus.

Kidproof Places If your kids are fans of playareas in restaurants, we need to talk. By Areeb Al Shathri

If you have young kids, taking them out in public can be a real hassle. What if you just want to enjoy a meal without having to micromanage your offspring. Well, let’s explore your choices shall we? We initially set out to scout and find you the best restaurants with kids areas. What ended up happening was that we found out you’re options are kind of limited. Now this list is by no means a comprehensive list, it only contains places that were recommended to us.

Applebee's

There's enough decoration on the wall to keep your kids distracted and entertained. Their play areas sizes differ depending on location, but they tend to run on the tight side, with a basic layout and games.

62 DESTINATION RIYADH AUGUST 2017

Fuddrucker’s

This place is classic, legendary even. Which is a nice way of saying it's been around for a while. Your kids will be playing the same games that two generations in my family have played. Their play area is divided into two parts: the downstairs (mini arcade) and the upside-down (Stranger Things joke).

Friday’s

If the photo of the play area looks dead, it's because it is. We were disappointed to learn that it's outdoors considering that heatstroke is a real side effect of the weather in Riyadh.

Look folks, we know children aren't that picky when it comes to play areas, but surely they deserve more than a poorly lit ball pit.

Fatburger/Buffalo's

The ambience is very child friendly with a friendly staff. Their kids' area is sizable and perfect for daytime. The glass covered structure allows ample sunlight without the encompassing heat.

Piatto - Panorama Mall

This branch doesn't technically have a play area, but we're working with what we've got. We included Piatto because they allow your child to make their own pizza which keeps them engaged and occupied while giving them a sense of purpose. Another compelling reason is the fact that Piatto is directly adjacent to the amusement park in Panorama. The best part is that no matter how old your kids are, there’s something for them here.

You can “check in” your kid at the soft jungle gym if you need to run a few errands or go shopping, or if they’re old enough to peruse on their own, get them a card and set them loose on the rides.

Kids are basically the perfect customers. They like most foods at your restaurants and can drag their parents to the same restaurant a hundred times. So don't take them for granted. You don't have to stock up your restaurant like Chuck E. Cheese, but you owe them at least better lighting. Maybe a couple of fun pictures or paintings on the walls?

Play areas should be… - Clean - Well-lit to avoid injury - Original - Versatile and fun DESTINATIONKSA.COM 63

Leftovers

Every lunch doesn't need to be made from scratch. Shop smart and your lunchboxes can still be super nutritious, without any preparation from

you. Buy mana’eesh or fatayer with a range of toppings and fillings or pick up savory croissants from your neighborhood bakery.

Plan a meal the day before so that the leftovers work for next day’s lunch. Pasta is perfect: add sauce for dinner and save some pasta to make a salad for the next day. Even leftover kebabs with some flatbread and pickles can make a fantastic quick lunch.

DIY Tins Keep a range of tins at hand: sweetcorn, white beans, fool medames, beetroot and tuna - you can quickly mix up salads according to everyone’s tastes by tossing in herbs, mayonnais or lemon juice to add extra flavor.

Save yourself some of the hard work and send everyone off with ingredients to assemble themselves. Lunchables: crackers, turkey ham, cheese and a tomato dip sauce. Tacos: mini tortilla wraps, grated cheese and a small container of chilicon-carne.

MOM’S FAVORITE:

kidney beans, white beans, beetroot and mackerel fillets with parsley, olive oil and lemon juice dressing. Just stir and go!

the way for a healthier Saudi Arabia. The two organizations are collaborating on raising health awareness in the Saudi community. They're also working hard to develop the means to address the issues and make Saudi Arabia a healthier place to live in. The MoU actually supports the Unilever Sustainable Living Plan in the region, a plan that calls for growing Unilever’s business while reducing its environmental footprint. It’s also a way to enhance the company’s positive social impact.

APPROACHING HYGIENE One of the approaches under the MoU is to design training materials for a program that targets infectious diseases in public hospitals. The Saudi Ministry of Health also plans on actively endorsing a digital hand hygiene campaign developed by Lifebuoy. They also plan on supporting a large campaign to improve the health and well being of the pilgrims coming to Saudi Arabia’s holy cities. Another great aspect of the partnership is their approach to target residents and the community directly. The Lifebuoy team will be joined by representatives from the Ministry of Health on trips to schools, hospitals and malls where they will deliver the message of health and hygiene to the community.

Isam Badwailan, the brand protection director at Binzagr Unilever Limited and Lifebuoy commented on the significance of the campaign, “Positively impacting the health and well-being of our people in built into our corporate DNA. It is a formal part of the Unilever Sustainable Living Plan, and also a key element of the Lifebuoy brand identity. We are delighted to have achieved the support of the Saudi Ministry of Health in taking our campaigns on health and the importance of hand-washing in stemming the spread of diseases, to wider audiences Kingdom-wide.” In 2015, Binzagr Unilever won the King Khalid Award for Sustainability Initiatives, and earlier this year they received the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Excellence Award. 12 MONTHS to a Healthier You Add or remove a habit every month.

TOPIC OF THE MONTH: 10,000 DAILY STEPS TOWARDS HEALTH

70 DESTINATION RIYADH AUGUST 2017

Taking 10,000 steps a day is a basic requirement for optimal health, like drinking adequate amounts of water each day. In order to stay fit, you still need to exercise in addition to daily walks. I always say walking is not sufficient exercise. To me, it is more of an essential movement. For optimal health and fitness, strive for 10,000 daily steps every day in addition to a regular exercise program

including high intensity training and strength training.

How can I know how many steps I take every day?

In my opinion, one of the best monitors is FitBit, which tracks how many steps are taken each day and you can program it to track your walking/running distance, endurance training, strength training along with calories burnt during all these

Keep this in mind: Since walking isn’t really exercise and you should be doing it every day, you don’t have to worry about being sore or wanting to give your muscles a break to recover. DID YOU KNOW

exercises. Recent research showed that wearing FitBit also helped overweight postmenopausal women increase their daily activity levels by nearly 40 minutes (789 steps) a week.

Is walking 10,000 steps really required? Yes! A recent study found that daily walking for an hour reduced the risk of stroke for men over the age of 60 by

as much as one-third, and it doesn’t matter how brisk the walk was. As far as fitness goes, walking will only help you out if you are starting out extremely out of shape. Therefore, a regular exercise routine is required to stay fit. Walking is an essential maintenance activity that will allow you to be healthy into old age.

According to UK’s National Health Service, the average person only walks between 3,000 to 4,000 steps a day. You don’t have to walk 10,000 steps in one go; break it down as you see fit. If you work in an office environment, make sure to get up and walk around every 15-20 minutes. This will also help you take a break from the awkward office posture and allow better blood flow and a clear mind.

Want to burn more during your walks? Ordinary walking does not qualify as high intensity training, however, there is a way to turn it into one. Try high intensity interval training where you walk for 30 seconds and walk briskly or jog for another 30 seconds.

If you go outdoors, max out on SUNSCREEN and WATER. I run with an entourage of water bottles, and a bleached face during summer. Better to be safe than sorry!

Day or Night

You can workout in the morning or at night. With the sun out for a longer periods of time, your mind will be more

receptive to either timing. Whichever you choose, creating consistency in your schedule will help you stick to your routine and ultimately achieve your fitness goals.

Stretch

Stretch before and after your workouts. Stretching not only prevents injuries but also helps us to create the long lean muscles that we love oh-somuch. Stretching also helps to metabolize blood sugar and improves the coordination in your limbs.

HERMANUS

The whale conservatory of Africa is world-renowned for being land-based whale watching central. Aside from the chance to spot those whales, you can’t miss the opportunity explore famous forest trails by quad bikes and get an adrenaline kick through treetop zip lining.

OUDTSHOORN

A highlight in any South Africa itinerary is to take on the N2 Highway–more popular known as the Garden Route. The name comes from the lush and diverse vegetation encountered along the highway.

Fortunately, there’s no shortage of things to do or explore along the drive that stretches 300 kilometers starting at Heidelberg in the Southern Cape to Storms River Village on the Eastern Cape border.

Stop at Oudtshoorn and explore one of the world’s greatest natural wonders: the Cango Caves. These caves are rich with limestone formations in varying colors. Another highlight at Oudtshoorn is the High Gate Ostrich Farm for the ultimate ostrich experience.

KNYSNA

The charming albeit small town of Knysna has more to offer visitors than meets the eye. Its popular waterfront possesses charms and spectacular view of the bay that gives other waterfronts a run for their money. No visit to Knysna is complete without a personal encounter with gentle giants at the Knysna Elephant Park.

PLETTENBERG BAY

The bay is a short drive past Knysna and has some of the most beautiful beaches in South Africa. Make sure you visit Monkey Land and Birds of Eden and take a walking tour in a free-romaing shelter to learn more about primates of Africa and birds both indigenous or migrated.

which is home to the Big Five. From your seat on the safari you’ll be inches away from these majestic animals as they play, feed, hunt and fight out in the open. SAUDI ARABIA’S Oldest Cities that are Still Inhabited The 2017 Arab Capital of Tourism By Mohammed Mirza

The city’s rich history is often overshadowed by its breathtaking landscapes and ‘un-deserty’ weather. Alongside Makkah, Taif was a major pilgrimage center in the preIslamic era. The entire city used to be walled and at that time just like today, Taif was known for being agriculturally rich. A famous historic fair called Souq Okaz took place annually in the northern part of Taif. The fair saw traders coming in from all around the peninsula trading bedouin crafts such as rugs, tents, 80 DESTINATION RIYADH AUGUST 2017

agricultural produce, pottery, jewelry, perfumes, and various spices. The spectacle also saw renowned poets converging

here to display their talents. In recent years the Saudi government has restarted the festivities of Souq Okaz.

2. DUMAT AL JANDAL Located in the northern part of Saudi Arabia, this city is referred to in early texts as Adummatu by the Assyrians; they described it as the capital of an Arab Kingdom. Dumat Al Jandal is perhaps most famous for being the capital of five famous Arab queens close to 3,000 years ago.

Visitors to the city today can stroll through an ancient part called Al Der District that dates back to the mid-Islamic era. This district was actually built upon ruins of other dwellings that are believed to be from over two millennia ago.

Standing on the incense route, frankincense, myrrh, spices, precious stones, pearls, silk, fine textiles, animal skins and gold all passed through Dumat Al Jandal. At its peak, Dumat Al Jandal was one of the most important trading cities in Northern Arabia.

3. JEDDAH There are various opinions on when the city was first inhabited; some claim it to be one of the earliest in the world as it is customarily associated to be the place where Hawa (wife of Adam) is believed to have been buried. Others believe that the city was inhabited after the collapse of the Marib dam in Yemen around 2,100 years ago and then there are others that trace its origins to the Stone Age. Nevertheless, it was a hamlet at most and rose to prominence only after entering the fold of Islam. Caliph Uthman turned the hamlet into a port city and, throughout its history, it served as a port of arrival for the majority of pilgrims coming to the Holy Cities. DESTINATIONKSA.COM DESTINATIONKSA.COM 81

4. MAKKAH Muslims believe that Makkah was first settled by Prophet Ismail, his descendants and tribes from Yemen. The Kaaba was a major place of worship even in pre-Islamic times. After the birth of Islam and its rapid spread, the number of pilgrims arriving in Makkah surged. Makkah never became the capital of any Islamic Kingdom or Caliphate, but the rulers under whose realm Makkah existed during various periods contributed generously to the upkeep of the Grand Mosque and the city.

5. TAYMA Tayma was famous during the Iron Age, according to Assyrian texts dating back to around 2,800 years ago. It was once the home of the Babylonian King Nabonidus. The modern town is built on top of about one-third of an ancient settlement, which has an estimated area of 950 hectares. Historic walls stand as a reminder of the city’s age.

6. MADINAH

After the arrival of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) Madinah saw what is believed to be one of the earliest ever documented constitutions, that is now known as the constitution of Madinah. It’s from Madinah that Islam spread from the borders of China in the east to the Atlantic Ocean in the west. 82 DESTINATION RIYADH AUGUST 2017

SOURCE PHOTO / OUR ANCIENT WORLD

Formerly known as Yathrib, the city’s history dates back to more than 2,600 years. It was first inhabited by Jewish and Arab tribes.

7. UNAIZAH Dating back to the pre-Islamic era, Unaizah was mentioned in numerous Arabian poems including those of celebrated Arabian poet Imru Al Qais. After the arrival of Islam, it acted as a stopping point for pilgrims coming to Makkah from Mesopotamia and Persia. Its beautifully rich architecture and warm hospitality of its people has left western travelers baffled. The famed traveler Amin Al Rihani even went so far as to call it the “Paris of Najd.”

8. TARUT ISLAND

Tarut Island passed into the hands of multiple rulers including the Portuguese. A fort which is believed to be made by the Portuguese still stands on the island as its major attraction.

Shrouded in mystery, the historic island continues to intrigue visitors even after close to 7,000 years of existence, making it one of the oldest cities not only in Arabia but in the entire world as well. Tarut Island was at the heart of the Dilmun Kingdom and played a crucial role in maritime trade within the Arabian Gulf.

9. NAJRAN The mysterious city of Ukhdood is over 2,500 years old. The city once housed grandiose palaces and was a major trading hub. It’s believed to be the town that is referred to in Surah Al Burooj which states that residents of a town were cursed as they were bystanders while true believers were being thrown into a fiery trench. HISTORIC KSA

Built as a watchtower, the structure is largely made of a mixture of mud and straws from palm trees. The mixture is believed to have been left to dry under the sun following which one layer after another was added to complete the tower.

Ash Shanana Tower – The Storyteller History found in places where one least expects them. By Mohammed Mirza

Al Qassim has always been acknowledged for its large volume of date production and the illustrious people that the land has given birth to, but behind the limelight of those two subtly lies the region’s history.

is that it there have been so many battles fought in and around it, and it has somehow managed to survive through them all. Most of these battles were between the Saudi State and the allies of the Ottomans.

A prime example of its history is in the form of Ash Shanana tower, which is located just 7 km from the center of the city of Al Rass in Al Qassim’s heartland. Standing at a height of 27 meters, the conical tower has become a mini-tourist landmark.

During one such battle, the tower was under massive artillery fire and it is believed that due to this it has reduced from its original height of 45 meters to the nearly 27 meters that it stands at today.

Historians have multiple opinions on when the tower was actually built with reports ranging from anywhere in between 1699 AD to 1817 AD. So by even the most conservative of estimates, it is at least 200 years old. But what’s most remarkable about it 84 DESTINATION RIYADH AUGUST 2017

The last of such battles to take place was in 1904 AD between King Abdulaziz’s forces and his adversaries from central Arabia. Despite all the battles that happened around it, Ash Shanana tower has literally stood the test of time and it stands with stories and tales of a number of battles and wars to tell to curious travelers.
