FROM THE EDITOR

Welcome back, Riyadhis!

Editor-in-Chief Enas Hashani Managing Director Maria Mahdaly Executive Editor Bassma Al Toaimi

Summer’s almost over and school’s just around the corner. Schools and businesses swing back into full gear and the city comes back to life.

Regional Editorial Manager Jou Pabalate Regional Editor Areeb Al Shathri Editor-at-Large Johara Al Mogbel Associate Editor/Photographer Mohammed Deghaishm

For this issue, we wanted to remind you not to get too busy to connect with not just your children, but family in general. We often feel hurried and miss out on the good things in life. We also don’t notice when something’s gone wrong until it’s far too late. For our special features, we looked at the two pressing issues facing children today: bullying and abuse. Each article will walk you through the signs of of it, how to spot it and how best to avoid it. Speaking of watching your children become young adults, one of the biggest milestones you and they will face is choosing where to study. Now lately, universities abroad seem to be getting favored over local ones. Hence, we went ahead and rounded up a few of our local universities and their accolades to show you the breadth of your options. Every now and then, we all need a break. Wanting a change of scenery happens regardless of where you live. What has rung true for us is that when we’re away, we actually miss our hometown. Now that September is here and the weather becomes friendlier, Riyadh will once again be breaming with activities, events and fun fare. So if you’re getting holiday blues, think of this instead…

Saudi Arabia is the 13th Largest Country in the World

Saudi Arabia spreads across 2,149,690 square kilometers of land. In contrast to other countries, it is the largest in the Middle East, about the size of Western Europe and one-quarter the size of the United States.

National Day is Always September 23

King Abdulaziz is the founder of modern Saudi Arabia and he led and participated in all major events leading to the unification of the country on September 23,1932.

Saudi Arabia is the Cradle of Islam

The Holy Quran was revealed to the Prophet (PBUH) in Makkah and Madinah, beginning about 610 AD. This alone made the Kingdom a very important location for the Islamic community, and a yearly destination for Hajj and the cradle of Islam.

Largest Oil Producer, to this Day

From the mid-20th century, the discovery of vast oil deposits propelled it into a key economic and geopolitical role. Saudi Arabia is the world’s largest repository of petroleum, having about one third of the world reserves of it. This made the Kingdom into one of the most important allies in the world.

King Faisal Abolished Slavery

Some of the major accomplishments of Saudi Royalties include King Faisal’s abolition of slavery in 1962. He also took a stand for women and the importance of education.

We Went to Space

In 1985, Prince Sultan Bin Salman became the first Saudi, first Arab, and first Muslim to travel in space when he rode aboard the U.S. space shuttle Discovery for a seven-day mission.

Masmak Fort

The capture of Masmak by the Al Saud in 1902 in Riyadh is noted as one of the main pillars that solidified the control of the royal family. It is a testament to the bravery of King Abdulaziz. The Masmak has been significantly restored and offers a free entrance museum for anyone wanting to know more about the history of Najd region and the rise of Riyadh.

Ad Diriyah

Originally the capital of the first Saudi state before it was moved to Riyadh, Diriyah, particularly Turaif district, is considered to be a World Heritage site. A simple walk amidst the restored ruins are bound to take you back in time and antiques of old Saudi Arabia can be discovered in its nearby museum.

No capital building. Your rental payments are economically irreversible. However, no exposure to the real estate market and no anxiety on price volatility.

What are some of the obstacles you faced while being abroad?

What is next for you?

Being abroad with children was very hard. The culture and social life were also a bit difficult. In Saudi we are used to being social and connected, and I really missed that. However, the compensation was the fact that I was receiving higher qualifications and fuller self-esteem.

Did you have a certain goal in mind during your studies abroad?

Steps to Elevating CSR

The question often asked: How can CSR become relevant within the organization? By Amr Banaja, SEDCO Holding Group

22 DESTINATION RIYADH SEPTEMBER 2016

1. Clarity on Goals

When setting up a corporate strategy function, make sure your goals are clear. In the short run, this will help align the stakeholders, and in the long run it’ll help you see the progress.

2. Alignment From the Top

Due to operational costs, the CSR practitioner will face hurdles if the CEO and board of the company are unaware of the long-term value of CSR.

3. Stated Values

To ensure that CSR is part of a company's DNA, it needs to be embedded in the stated values. Stated values answer questions about the safety and environment of the workplace.

4. Embedding the Value of CSR Within the Organization

Here are five ways to effectively embed CSR in your organization: • Make sure your top leadership clearly articulates the company’s commitment to corporate citizenship. • Make sure you have the right structure for executive officers to manage and monitor the company’s citizenship strategy and performance. • Engage your stakeholders. • Develop comprehensive CSR reports. • Link compensation to attainment of CSR goals and targets.

5. Strong Corporate Governance

Corporate governance calls on corporate boards and managements to actively engage stakeholders to face

today’s economic, social and environmental issues, both short and long term.

6. Stay Connected

Most young consumers and employees in this day and age are socially conscious and think that companies should support the environment and community. They are likely to maintain their relationships with responsible brands.

7. Aim to Create Collective Impact

Follow these two steps for results. • Coordinate your efforts so that each stakeholder can participate without overlap or repetition. • Always make sure there is constant communication between the various stakeholders, along with easily shareable and measurable performance indicators.

8. Never Give Up

By the year 2100, the world population is expected to double reaching over 14 billion. It is our duty to act responsibly to sustain what we have today for the future generations.

CSR IN KSA The King Khalid Foundation is one of the active organizations focusing on the proliferation of CSR in Saudi Arabia. They have initiated the KIng Khalid Awards to turn the spotlight on CSR programs that are effectively creating impact in Saudi Society. In addition, the CSR Saudi Summit is an annual event that brings together different industries to discuss trends and best practices in corporate social responsibility. This includes recognizing businesses with strong sustainable programs.

LITERATURE “Corporate Social Responsibility: Doing the Most Good for Your Company and Your Cause” Companies are expected to give back to society through charities, so this book delves deep into why this is not only useful for communities but for the business itself. “Social Responsibility and Business Ethics” This book in Arabic explains the importance of ethics to business growth. IN AND LISTEN Recognizing and tackling the signs of bullying. By Lama Ghazzawi

People get bullied at every age for being different; having different accents, nationalities, colors, opinions, social status and financial income are all things that will get you bullied. The worst part is: no one officially does anything about it. It’s all part of growing up and ”standing up for yourself.” There aren’t many programs at schools explaining what bullying really is and how to deal with it. Children go home without shoes, with bruises, black eyes and scratches. They can even not show any symptoms but still seem so distant and quiet. In this case, emotional trauma is a definite link. 24 DESTINATION RIYADH SEPTEMBER 2016

In an interview with Sara Al Sudairy, the owner of Kids Talents, she shares the importance of building a child’s character at a young age. Stories of the Prophet (PBUH)’s kindness and compassion are always being told, but it is never made clear to children how to connect them to real life situations.

STAFF PHOTO/NAWAF ALFARRAJ

The camp hosted an antibullying campaign prepared by Princess Norah University students. It taught children exactly what bullying is and helped them figure out for themselves the correct ways of dealing with it. This is an important step that shouldn’t be skipped, because as much as you tell people that something is wrong, they have to be put in the situation in order to realize the impact it could have. And that is exactly what the program did for students; it made them realize just how much of bad effect bullying could have on people, but it does it in a simple, understandable manner for children.

available and continue proper supervision. This alone will drastically reduce the level of bullying between children and create a more creative, united environment where everyone gets a chance to add something special.

Bullying is a topic people tend to avoid talking about. But, what if it’s happening to people you love while you don’t even know about it? Web: kidstalentsksa.blogspot.com akidstalentsksa / doingitwithluv

As a mother, Al Sudairy also talked about making things clear to children. Telling them right from wrong at a young age, showing them exactly how to deal with different people and situations. All of this leads to bigger understandings in life. This being said, a good way to avoid bullying is to make other positive activities DESTINATIONKSA.COM 25

How to Protect Your Children

Simple dos and don’ts to prevent child abuse. By Johara Almogbel

Don’t leave your children alone in strange places. If you want to take your child to Chucky Cheese, don’t just give them money and leave. The staff isn’t there to babysit. Even in friends’ houses, if you’re not intimately acquainted with the family, make sure your child has a way to contact you at all times. You should also pick up your child to and from school, and if they ride the bus make sure you are able to greet them at the door of your house or apartment building. 26 DESTINATION RIYADH SEPTEMBER 2016

Do keep an open channel with your child. If your child knows they can come and talk to you about any little thing, you’ll make it easier for them to let you know something’s wrong. Always ask them about their day at school, a friend’s house or any situation you’re not available in. Also, provide your child with a family cell phone that they can call you on if they need to.

Do decide on a magic word system. We read this in an online post once and thought it was a wonderful idea. Sometimes, even with the best intentions children can get lost, and people with bad intentions can mislead them to thinking the predator knows their parents. Pick a word that your child will know is the password for anyone who knows you.

Don’t shift your child caring to others. Leaving them completely in the care of household staff allows your child to transfer their trust from you to an employee in your home and again, leaves them vulnerable. Even with a 9-5 job, parents must find a balance for childminding, and enrolling

them into preschool early is a good option as well. Sending your baby with your driver to pick up your other kids so you can get some shut-eye, however, is NOT. These tips are in no way a fool proof guide. Every situation and family is different. But in our society child molestation and bullying is a subject that is shifted over and swept under the rug, and we do urge you to take a moment and think about the effect any kind of neglect, whether intentional or unintentional, may have on your child.

KEEP THIS IN MIND GET SUPPORT The Ministry of Health runs the Protection against Violence and Abuse Program. They run a hotline for child abuse cases with the Social Protection Department of the Ministry of Social Affairs: CHILD HELPLINE - 166111 TO REPORT POSSIBLE CASES - 1919 For more information on awareness campaigns, centers for child abuse cases and initiatives, visit the National Safety Program website: nfsp.org.sa

College-Life Hacks Don’t be the stereotypical frazzled college student; follow these tips to stay organized. By Deema Al Bugmi

SYLLABUS

KEEP A PLANNER

If you’re a visual person, a planner will go a long way. It will lay out all the things you need to get done during the week. A good tip is to sync your calendar to your laptop to your phone. Color-coordinate your work according to its category such as school, work, or to-do.

34 DESTINATION RIYADH SEPTEMBER 2016

DOWNLOAD YOUR SYLLABUS

If available, log in and check out the lecture slides ahead of time. Download/print and go through the syllabus for each course. This will help you get an idea of what the content and assignments will be about. By doing so, you will be prepared for any questions thrown your way in class.

DON’T PROCRASTINATE

I’m guilty of procrastinating, so I know just the trick to help you avoid this nasty habit. Set yourself some dedicated study time. Turn your phone off, disconnect from the Internet and give your work your undivided attention for two hours. If you need more time, take a 15-minute break in between.

5

Struggles Every College Student Knows

1. 8 a.m. classes

FIVE MINUTES FOR CLEANING AND ORGANIZING

You will be amazed at what you can do in five minutes. Just set a timer and do some basic organizing chores: put papers in the right folders, delete those extra files you don’t need on your laptop and so on. It’s a simple way to always stay de-cluttered.

No comment. Just, sigh.

2. What is sleep? Getting good grades, having a decent social life and sleeping well seem to always be in competition in a balanced life. For some reason sleep is always the first out the window.

SLEEP WELL

I saved the most important tip for last. We always seem to overlook sleep and view it as a choice rather than a necessity. Sleeping well is not only crucial to your performance, but it’s also very important for your health. To get a good night sleep, set a sleeping time and stick to it no matter what. Customize when to sleep according to your schedule, but always ensure to get at least seven hours of rest.

4. Difficult professors You must’ve come across that particular professor that you just can’t seem to please. You can have William Shakespeare write a paper for your English Literature course and they still won’t like it.

5. Hell week 3. Getting grouped with slackers When you have to carry the workload of three other people because no one wants to put in the work.

Hell week is when even Satan sits back cheering on the professors. It’s when all midterms, assignments and projects are due IN THE SAME WEEK. Not cool at all.

ARTIST’S CORNER MEET THIS MONTH’S EMERGING ARTIST! By Johara Almogbel

What do you think of the art scene in Riyadh? Anything you’d like to see changed?

The art scene here in Riyadh is pretty impressive, although the art styles are not my kind of art but who can’t love them, right?

Who are your role models? Walt Disney, Matt Groening, Abdullah Jaber, Seth Macfarlane and Sara Qaed.

What does being creative mean to you?

NAME:

I GHADA AL HUDAITH AGE: 23 OCCUPATION:

Freelancer

p cc / tiq cin on my Wacom nch bu paper, pencil and a of markers.

MEDIUM: Photosho

What got you started?

The compliments I get after someone sees my cartoons, the feeling is very rewarding so I guess that can be it.

Why do you art?

It’s my way of having fun.

Is your work the result of sudden inspiration, or long term planning? How do you think up your concepts?

Growing up watching old classic cartoons is basically the reason of me loving and producing them. I’ve always been inspired or amazed at how animation works and how 36 DESTINATION RIYADH SEPTEMBER 2016

“they” do it. So back in the day when I was in school, I kept on sketching during classes (not that I advise anyone to do so), or whenever I study at home. Until I actually believed I got something going on.

What is, in your opinion, the best thing you’ve ever created and why?

Honestly, I’m not the one who rates my cartoons so I don’t have any masterpieces, but personally I find my animal cartoon sketches good.

To me being creative at cartooning is to take a situation or an idea, and looking at it from a different angle. Turning it into a funny unique cartoon. ghudaithi

GENERATION XYZ...

A trip down Riyadh’s memory lane. By Lama Ghazzawi

In every generation there’s something special. Whether it’s events, music, rising talents, fashion trends or just memories. We went back a few generations to see just how special they were.

1980S 1970S

This generation was one for the ages. In music, it was the rise of rock and roll and Michael Jackson in the west, and Sabah, Abdel Halim Hafez, Salwa and Fairouz in the middle east. This era was truly blessed with classics who to this day remain idols and figures that have

an influence on people of all ages. When the littleones roamed the streets in the ‘70s, they were sure to play all kinds of outdoor games and stayed majorly active. They had a deep value for home-cooked meals and desserts made mostly by their mothers.

38 DESTINATION RIYADH SEPTEMBER 2016

The introduction of pop and glitter. Here, the fashion was shiny, metallic and totally awesome. People were super happy, listening to new music and watching awesome comedies on TV. Some of the famous artist that rose during this time were Amr

Diab, Samira Said and ABBA. This is the time where Arabic music started getting that disco feel. The kids in this era also enjoyed playing fun board games like Snakes and Ladders, card games and were quite social. Growing up in the ‘80s was a pure sweet spot!

Who doesn’t love this decade? I mean, come on – the real introduction to technology and media. Music popped into the western side and Britney Spears, Blue, Nsync and The Backstreet Boys came to town. There were scooters, rollerblades,

Gameboys and tamagotchis of course. This decade had it all! Girls flaunted their chokers and double buns, boys were taking apart electronics and -mostly- putting them back together.

1990S This is the era of technology. The overload of it, we mean. Kids have become so fixated on the screens of phones and computers. However, they do have hover boards, excess knowledge and experience in various things. They are

2000S

always on trend, and have this great skill of adaptability. I mean, of course they do. Time has literally accelerated with the integration of technology in important places, including schools.

US OUT The Defensive Playbook Hair-saving hacks for the girl who likes to play in the sun. By Areeb Al Shathri

56 DESTINATION RIYADH SEPTEMBER 2016

With this local heat, our friendly sun will do more than just kiss the ends of your hair for that signature beach dweller look. It will launch a full-blown attack on your most vulnerable soldiers… your hair.

The Best Offense is a Good Defense

Tips to Remember

If you can’t find hair sunscreen, just dilute skin sunscreen with water and put it in a spray bottle.

First Aid

Sunscreen… yes, that’s right.

Some stores may carry heat/ sun protection for your hair. Whenever you’re preparing to do battle with the sun, armor your hair with a few sprays and your soldiers will thank you for it.

Your tarha is your best friend.

Covering your hair whilst out in the sun is a must, and luckily for us it’s pretty much mandatory. If a tarha isn’t exactly appropriate dress code where you’re going to be, switch it up with hats or caps.

If you don’t have any of these masks or oils and don’t feel like going out, you can replace them with almost anything with moisture including conditioners. Seriously though, your kitchen probably has seven different substitutes. You have no excuse.

Hair, like the rest of your body, needs moisture. Without it, your hair becomes dry, frizzy, damaged and easily breakable. Treat your hair with masks or oils overnight to help restore some of your lost moisture. We recommend using coconut oil or, our favorite, argan oil.

Landmines to Look Out For Heat styling your hair in this weather is essentially the equivalent to shooting your own foot. Your hair is already sustaining too much heat damage from the sun to handle your flattening iron’s friendly fire. If your hair desperately needs to be styled switch out of the iron with your blow dryer, and only use it when your hair is a little damp WITH heat protection spray.

If you have bleached or dyed hair these recommendations become commandments unless you want your hair to turn green or fade away.

Need for Speed Delivery Challenge Here’s what we think about some restaurant delivery services. By Areeb Al Shathri

We all love a good take out restaurant, but sometimes you just want to eat something right now. A reliable delivery time is almost non-existent around here, something we all know to be inherently true. If you’re ordering food and you’re in a hurry, be prepared to make two to seven phone

calls inquiring about the status of your meal to an agitated delivery guy. To spare you the unnecessary misery of your tortured empty stomach, we’ve decided to test out exactly how fast some of our fast food restaurants really are. We’ve picked a few of

the most widespread fast food restaurants that you would probably have within delivery distance, and narrowed the selection pool even more by only considering restaurants with an online ordering option to minimize your human interaction when you’re hangry (hungry/angry).

No ladies and gents, we have not lost our marbles yet. We did however get together one day and thought, does all water taste the same? Being the hardcore scientists that we are, the team decided to put our theories on the “best” water brands to the test and actually came up with results:

Please Note Good PH level is above 7; anything below that is considered acidic. As for sodium, the lower the number the better too but as we’ve come to find out, it does not have a direct correlation to the saltiness of the water.

Once it Turns Black, It Never Goes Back Or does it?

By Seyma Saricimen

Just when things seem to be going really well with your plant, you come back from a weeklong holiday to a plant that has given up on life. As depressing

as those black stems and leaves may be, don’t give up just yet. There are a few ways to determine if your plant has a living chance.

SIGNS

SIGNS

SIGNS

Problem

Problem

Problem

Solution

Solution

Yellowing and softening leaves.

You’re feeding the plant too much water. To find out how often to water the plant, check the soil– if it’s still damp or wet, you don’t have to water yet. If it’s dry, it needs to be watered. Also make sure the pot has proper drainage holes in the bottom.

72 DESTINATION RIYADH SEPTEMBER 2016

Brown, crispy leaves. Leaves that are falling off.

You’re not watering the plant enough. Again, get a feel of the water in the soil. Remember every plant has a different requirement, and you need to get a feel of yours. You have to properly know your plant and its needs.

Worn-out leaves and decreasing soil levels.

Malnutrition

Solution

Potted plants live in limited amount of soil, and the nutrients fade in time. The simplest solution is to add new potting soil by lifting the plant and the root completely or by adding a thin layer to the top of the soil.

HELP! MY PLANT IS IN A COMA! The extra mile...

SIGNS

Fine webbing on the plant and tiny insects.

Humidity: Remember that most plants like humidity. And we just don’t have that here in Riyadh. Have no fear! You can instead place a pan filled with gravel underneath your plant. Add a little water to the pan (make sure the water doesn’t go above the gravel). As the water evaporates, it will increase the humidity around your plant.

SIGNS

Burnt, yellowing leaves.

Nutrients:

Plants, like people, need proper nutrition to stay healthy. To give your plant a boost, add used teabags in your potting soil or empty the tea leaves directly into the pot. You can also add a 1/2-inch layer of used coffee grounds in the soil.

When All Else Fails Step 1: Pinch a small part of the dying plant and look for a green and slightly moist tip. If you find any, then breathe, there is hope.

Step 2: If you find a

dry colorless stem, it’s time to prepare a memorial service for your late plant.

Problem

You’ve got pests.

Solution

Pests that generally invade houseplants are mites, scales and whiteflies. These teeny insects can spread from infected plants to healthy ones, so make sure to separate a sick one as soon as you notice the infection.

Problem Sunlight

Solution

You are going to need to change the amount of light your plant is getting. Especially if you just trimmed the stems, you have to give it around half of the suggested light for that plant type until it shows new growth.

Step 3: Visit Sultan Gardens to buy a new indoor plant which can survive Riyadh’s harsh weather. Just ask the shopkeeper for some advice and he will most probably give you what suits you best.

And… you can always just get a plastic one that would last forever.

Parenting Tips

1. Teach them to worship Allah alone. “And [mention, O Muhammad], when Luqman said to his son while he was instructing him, O my son, do not associate [anything] with Allah. Indeed, association [with him] is great injustice.” [31:13]

2. Teach them to be dutiful to their parents.

Luqman Al Hakim was known for the excellent advice he gave when it came to parenting.

“And We have enjoined upon man [care] for his parents. His mother carried him, [increasing her] in weakness upon weakness, and his weaning is in two years.” [31:14]

3. Teach them to be grateful. “Be grateful to Me and to your parents; to Me is the [final] destination.” [31:14]

4. Teach them that Allah is well-Aware of their good/ bad deeds. [And Luqman said], “O my son, indeed if wrong should be the weight of a mustard seed and should be within a rock or [anywhere] in the heavens or in the earth, Allah will bring it forth. Indeed, Allah is Subtle and Acquainted.” [31:16]

5. Teach them to establish prayer and be patient. “O my son, establish prayer, enjoin what is right, forbid what is wrong, and be patient over what befalls you. Indeed, [all] that is of the matters [requiring] determination.” [31:17]

6. Teach them not be boastful, arrogant and proud. “And do not turn your cheek [in contempt] toward people and do not walk through the earth exultantly. Indeed, Allah does not like everyone selfdeluded and boastful.” [31:18]

7. Teach them to walk and talk humbly. “And be moderate in your pace and lower your voice; indeed, the most disagreeable of sounds is the voice of donkeys.” [31:19]

The metaphor of Edge of the World perfectly depicts the wondrous mountain, Jabal Tuwaiq, better described as the Tuwaiq escarpment. It adapted the name Edge of the World for its natural aesthetic. Driving to the location is recommended

in a 4x4 vehicle because the road is difficult, rocky and long. Also, climbers should go with a group or someone who has already been to the spot before. Many times, hotels can help with such arrangements. It takes about two hours to get to Tuwaiq, a minimum of two hours to explore the location and two hours to get back. Using GPS could be tricky as network services could re-appear and disappear the further people go.

EXPLORE KSA

Experience the Other Side of

FARASAN In case you’ve had enough of its pristine beaches. By Mohammed Mirza

To find artifacts, you’d need to take a closer look into the archipelago, comprising of 84 islands. From remnants of the Roman Era to ancient burial sites, all are dotted over various parts of the islands. For most tourists today, the most easily accessible historic sites are the ones that are the most apparent and closest to the main island. The beaches, the nature and a bit of snorkeling are what most tours have to offer. You’ll probably have to explore these places on your own.

The Farasan Islands have been earmarked for their clear seas, virgin beaches and coral reefs, but many are unaware of the islands’ rich history. Though the written sources on Farasan Islands are limited they do suggest that the archipelago has played an important role in maritime trade from the early Roman period.

AL QASSAR VILLAGE The construction of the fort dates back to the 18th century and it has seen a number of skirmishes since. There is a long-standing well right next to the fort; it’s highly likely the residents of the fort used it as their main source of water.

Dating back to the Roman Era, this deserted village is one of the oldest inhabited sites on the islands. The houses in the village are made from coral and mud that has hardened into solid rocks.

Restoration has taken place at the site and it forms one of the biggest attractions on the islands, mainly due to its proximity to the biggest resort on Farasan and the seaport.

Next to the village is an ancient Kedmi site that has large A two-meter high wall surrounds each house, which is geometric stones resembling Roman columns. generally one or two rooms.

OTTOMAN FORT Standing atop an elevated ridge of coral-stone on the outskirts of the main town, this Ottoman fort is strategically located from where you can see a good portion of the island’s seas. The fort has just one big hall inside, and it’s more of a fortification due to its small size. It’s a representation of local architecture as it was constructed using locally found construction materials. The walls are made mostly from coral rocks and the roofs using palm fronds.

BEIT AL REFAI Dating back to 1922, Beit Al Refai was built by a well-known pearl merchant, Munawar Al Refai. The house is considered to be the archetype of Farasani architecture. The intricate work on the gypsum walls in this building is unlike any other in the Kingdom. The ceiling of the exquisite majlis is engraved with colored ornaments. Similar to Beit Al Refai is the house of Hussein Bin Yahya Al Rifai, which is also on Farasan Islands, though lacking in grandeur when compared to the former.

AL NAJDI MOSQUE Pearl merchants were one of the richest members of the society on the Farasan Islands. Like the houses they built, the mosques that were funded by them are also most noticeable. The Al Najdi mosque was constructed by Ibrahim Al Najdi, who was one of the biggest pearl merchants on the island. Surrounded by houses on all sides, the mosque sits inconspicuously in a densely packed neighborhood.

The walls of the mosque are decorated with plaster-recessed ribs and each window on the qibla wall is topped with gypsum-decorated arches. The wooden mimbar and mihrab are said to be brought from India and are adorned with colorful decorative ornaments.

Hajj Zainal KSA’s Hero of Education More about Saudi’s first school. By Nora Alourfi

Founded in 1905 by Hajj Mohamed Ali Yousef Zainal, Al Falah School was the initial step in eradicating illiteracy in Saudi Arabia. Hajj Zainal was a pioneer in every sense of the word. Prior to the creation of Al Falah, ‘schooling’ composed exclusively of rote memorization of texts.

Hajj Zainal was so dedicated to his cause that he didn’t even wait to get a permit to formally open the school; some of the school’s students had their first lesson in one of the houses in the Old Jeddah district. Hajj Zainal’s funds also came from his own pocket. Indeed, his wife went to the extent of selling her own jewelry just to raise enough money to finance the school. Eventually, after the establishment of the Kingdom, King Abdulaziz himself supported Al Falah.

86 DESTINATION RIYADH SEPTEMBER 2016

Hajj Zainal spared no efforts in making the school the best it could be - and cared deeply about its students. For some graduates, Al Falah School wasn’t the end of the journey, since it sent its exceptional students to Egypt and India to continue their studies. Al Falah’s alumni have gone on to accomplish remarkable things. Among them are Prince Mish’al Bin Majed,

governor of Jeddah; Hisham Nazer, former oil minister; and Abdulwahab Abdulwasie, former minister of Hajj. Of course, it is impossible to name them all as it is said that half of the fathers of Jeddah have graduated from Al Falah. Truly, Al Falah School and Hajj Zainal have left a longlasting mark on Saudi society. COORDINATES 21°29'13"N 39°11'21"E

Today, Al Falah School comprises all levels of education, from grades 1 – 12.
