FROM THE EDITOR Editor-in-Chief Enas Hashani Managing Editor Maria Mahdaly Executive Editor Bassma Al Toaimi

GOOD VIBES All day, everyday. What better way to close the year than an issue that makes you hope, live and believe? Yes, ladies and gents of Riyadh, this is something we'd like to call the feel good edition - ‘cause that's exactly how you'd feel after reading it. As we head to the new year, we would like to inspire you to hope, just like the Saudi luminaries we're featuring in this issue. Lujain Ubaid hopes for a better and sustainable social development powered by enterprise and she's letting her belief take her out to new heights. And if that tall order isn't enough, we've also got an epic list of all the things we love in Saudi Arabia! There's no more excuse for letting life pass you by in city. We're still not finished, Riyadhis, if you’re living it already why not start believing you can make positive life choices and changes for yourself too? Just like Sami Tokhais did when he decided to quit his corporate job and travel the world. Or how bout join the Toastmasters club and conquer your fear of public speaking? For food lovers out there, it’s time to go through your checklist because we’ve gathered our best of the best picks of the year for your gastronomical pleasure. We also share with you some tips on how to commit to a healthy lifestyle - to jumpstart your resolutions. You can do so much if you put your heart to it. One of the best things about being part of Destination is that we are in the business of being optimists. We believe in what the city stands for and what it can become. We have faith in its people and what they can achieve. As the year draws to an end, we invite you our dear readers to reflect on the past months. It would be an injustice to not recognize that there were terrible times but also, we believe that there are moments when humanity rose up to the challenge and that we continue to have faith in one another. Let the latter remind you to keep on choosing love over hate. Till next time dear readers, Be a giver of love, kindness and strength to others. Enas Hashani Editor-in-Chief *Destination Riyadh Magazine is a Rumman Company Publication.

Road Rage doesn’t Solve the Traffic, People!

Despite the winter weather, we’ve been hearing news reports about drivers losing their cool on the streets. TIPS TO AVOIDING ROAD RAGE • Breathe and loosen grip on the steering wheel. • Turn down the volume on your car speakers during high stress situations like traffic. • When being provoked, do not step out of your vehicle. DIYAR AL SALAM A Community Within a Community Sultan Batterjee, President and Founder of Lifestyle Developers, launches its latest residential development in the heart of Jeddah.

Dalal Al Fadoul, Sultan Battarjee

Dalal Al Fadhol, proud mother of Sultan Batterjee, President and Founder of Lifestyle Developers, laid the foundation for Diyar Al Salam (Homes of Peace), a massive housing project consisting of eight buildings, 140 residential units and eight penthouses.

The buildings are connected by an expansive, elevated sky garden with a vast 50 meter long reflecting pool, the longest in Saudi Arabia. The project features an array of state of the art facilities, including health clubs, a library, day care, and multipurpose club room. A community within a community, Diyar Al Salam is an urban retreat within the city, designed to evoke a sense of tranquility and serenity. From this a concept was born, in which the “Dove of Peace” became the symbol of the project and the prevailing theme throughout the development, inspired by the nature of its name, Diyar Al Salam. The project is perfectly positioned in the heart of the city, in Al Salama District behind Ice Land, between Al Madinah Road and Prince Sultan Street. It aims to offer affordable luxury housing options to the community.

16 DESTINATION RIYADH DECEMBER 2015 ADVERTORIAL

In her speech at the inauguration event, Al Fadhol expressed her admiration and pride regarding her son’s achievements and urged the youth to set goals and work hard to accomplish them. Al Fadhol is the first Saudi woman to launch such a massive real estate project; an initiative that reflects the social status mothers have in society and the important role they play in making decisions affecting Saudi families. Batterjee started off by deeply thanking his mother for her continuous support. “My mother has always played a pivotal role in my life and success,” said Batterjee, who owns a real estate company

that is considered a pioneer in raising the standards of living, creating innovative and affordable solutions suitable for Saudi families. The project is targeted to aspiring middle-income professionals, allowing them to purchase the units directly off plan/pre-sale with approval from the Ministry of Commerce. Selling real estate units off plan/pre-sale is the only promising solution for real estate projects in the country, he noted. Batterjee thanked all members of the pre-sale committee in the Saudi Ministry of Commerce for their continuous support

and strategic planning for the future of KSA. Batterjee’s company, Lifestyle Developers, won numerous global awards in its field, such as awards for Cityscape Jeddah, Construction Week, and International Property Awards “Diyar Al Salam: Best Residential Development.” Lifestyle Developers purpose is based on the belief that behind its commitments is an understanding of the possibilities to raise the standards of living. The company holds an infinite sense of responsibility and respect for mankind by focusing on their four core elements of design, quality, affordability and community.

WHY LIFESTYLE DEVELOPERS?

Lifestyle Developers create exceptional developments with the purpose of raising the standards and value of living for its communities. The developer achieves this by harmoniously blending exclusive quality and efficiency through ingenious thinking and continuously challenging new frontiers within economical ranges. Consistently groundbreaking in its approach, the company creates superbly designed properties that continue to exceed expectations and raise the standards of living.

LUJAIN AL UBAID

By Jou Pabalate

They say that the only constant thing in the world is change, whether that change is for the better, all depends on the choices we make. Born and raised in Riyadh, Lujain Al Ubaid is one such Saudi whose choice was to be a vessel of change in the area of social development. As early as her days in Najd National Schools, Al Ubaid was positively influenced by memories of her mother bringing her along for charity missions. During one of these trips, she had a chance encounter with an elderly woman named Bushra, whose warm smile and dream of building a mosque lit up her passion to make a difference. At only 16 years old, Al Ubaid led her class in raising funds for a mosque in memory of Bushra—in fact, at the end of her high school, they managed to build two. What began as a decision to help one person achieve their dream turned into a vocation for Al Ubaid. A decade later, she is now the CEO of Tasamy for Social Entrepreneurship, a non-profit organization dedicated to establishing an ecosystem and a safe haven for social entrepreneurs in the region. Her hard work has not gone unnoticed. She had previously been honored by King Salman for the various

volunteering activities she led during her tenure at AlGhad forum, an esteemed national youth development focused organization, in which she was a founding member of the strategic planning team. She was also an associate for SADIG, a group working on creating new industrial ventures and added value in turnaround services, innovation, and sustainability consultancy. Al Ubaid, who has a background in finance, diversified her knowledge by participating in the Harvard Business School Women Executive Leadership Program as well as Columbia

Business School’s Executive Education Program for NonProfit Organizations. The inexhaustible Al Ubaid is about to take on a new challenge in her journey. She has been selected as one of the of Acumen global fellows and will be heading to India where she will spend most of 2016, working for an education institution that helps community members

gain the skills they need for the job market. Al Ubaid is a role model for her contemporaries not just because of the path she has chosen to take. Rather, what others can learn from her is that the mark of a true leader is the willingness to be a follower and learner in order to serve your purpose better. Web: tasamy.com

I thought at the beginning that I would only be serving the Saudi community but we have been approached by enthusiastic youth from all over the world. Knowing this makes me eager to wake up dream, work and hustle for my life’s purpose: enabling those who want to create positive change and impact around the world. — Lujain Al Ubaid DESTINATIONRYD.COM 19

NADEEN ALSAYAT KSA’S FIRST FEMALE DETECTIVE

major, was very close to my personality and preferences.

By Aabiya Baqai

What were your biggest challenges as the first Saudi female studying to become a detective?

How would you describe yourself?

A young Saudi woman who loves adventures and exploration and always seeks to develop her society.

What got you into the field of criminology and criminal justice?

It was my childhood dream. When I was a child, my favorite cartoon was “Detective Conan,” a detective who had a new crime every day and tried to find the right suspect through collecting and analyzing the evidence. Because of this, I always imagined myself to be that detective. Then when I became a teenager, I liked to read about the analysis of characters and play brain games that were about connectivity and conclusions. So criminal justice, as a

20 DESTINATION RIYADH DECEMBER 2015

Firstly, I had a different issue since my first language is Arabic, and when I went to the US I did not speak English at all. So, I studied English and finished the program in one year, and then I started the Masters program. But, in my opinion, learning English in one year was not enough to study for a master’s degree in Criminal Justice. Since this major uses high-level vocabulary, it was difficult for me to learn the language in one year. I could not understand everything in the classes and I had trouble understanding the school books. Moreover, I was the only Arab student at the school, I sometimes needed help to understand the assignments or the classes since my professors were treating me like the rest of the American students,

ignoring that I am actually an international student and this is my second language. Secondly, this major talks a lot about the international terrorism. And unfortunately, some western people have the belief that Muslims are terrorists. So, I faced some harassment from my classmates because I was the only Muslim in all my classes. Also, some of the books taught some wrong ideas about Islam and Muslims, which definitely bothered me. However, I worked very hard to improve my language and tried as much as I could to set a good example of Muslims by treating them with the utmost courtesy. Also, I tried to fix some misconceptions about Islam by writing all my papers about the security efforts in Saudi Arabia, which show an example of the Islamic community that fights crimes and seeks a safe society. So, I thank Allah, who helped me acquire the degree under all these pressures.

STAFF PHOTO/ MOHAMMED DEGHAISHIM

Her background, experience and hopes for the future.

Can you tell us a “wow, this is awesome!” moment you had while studying criminology?

My wow moments were when I had the internship at the police department because I was actually living the fascinating moments I watched on TV. I remember one day I went on a ride along with some police officers. They asked me to sign a paper asking me to take responsibility in case something happened to me. I signed the paper and we left the police department.

In the police car we got a call from 911 to look for a suspect who had a fight with his family then ran away with a gun in his neighborhood. We arrived at the neighborhood, and before we got out of the car to look for him, one of the police officers asked me, “Nadeen, are you sure you want to get out of the car? The suspect has a gun! He may shoot you and you do not have gun or a bullet resistant vest to protect yourself! Stay in the car for your safety!” I said, “Yes, I’m sure I want to get out of the car. This opportunity will never come again in Saudi Arabia.” The police officer thought I

was crazy. I laughed it off and we both proceeded to look for the suspect. It was very dark and quiet and the officers were walking very carefully with guns and flashlights in their hands. I was walking with them and asking myself whether this was really happening. It was just like an action movie. I was smiling the whole time! We were looking behind trees and trash searching for the suspect, and the five officers were walking in front of me all the time to protect me. I followed closely behind them. Then I noticed movement between a trashcan, so I stopped and within a second, the suspect stood up and pointed his gun at me. Next thing I know, I fell to the ground. One of the officers pushed me down to move me away from the suspect’s gun. The officers then arrested the suspect without any harm. It was scary and surreal but I was still smiling. I still could not digest that I was working with police officers against criminals!

What are you planning to pursue in Saudi Arabia with this degree?

I hope to be a detective at The Bureau of Investigation and Public Prosecution, and at the same time I would like to teach in a university to transfer the experiences I got from the US to my society.

You’ve paved a new way for women in Saudi Arabia, how does that make you feel?

I am so proud of myself and what I have done. It is a great feeling when people tell me that I am their hero and they hope someday to do what I have done. But still I would like to achieve more in my life and leave an important mark in Saudi Arabia’s history.

What piece of advice would you give to other Saudi women passionate about this field?

Fieldwork experience is important to any student because it shows the real needs of any major and how to apply the materials received in classes. So I advise all students to have internships.

SAUDI ADVENTURER

Sami Altokhais A psychologist by degree, photographer and natural explorer by choice. By Johara Almogbel

Sami Altokhais did something quite impressive: He quit his job in banking to travel in South America. Since we only dream of quitting our jobs to travel the world (hi, bosses, we’re just kidding we swear) we immediately bombarded Altokhais with requests of how he did it. You’re welcome.

I have always had chronic wanderlust. I was born in the US and most my life was spent going back and forth to Riyadh, due to my father’s studies in the US. When I grew up, traveling extended outside the two countries.

What brought up the idea of traveling to South America?

I love Latin America: the history, culture, landscapes, people and food. I have had a lot of Latino friends and we got a long very well. My first trip there was in 2008 when I went to Guadalajara, Mexico. The second trip was in December 2012 when I attended a friend’s wedding in 26 DESTINATION RIYADH DECEMBER 2015

Guatemala. I fell in love with the country and decided to come back four months later to study Spanish. I went back in March 2013 and stayed in the colonial town of Antigua for a full month. After going back to my job in Riyadh I decided to plan my Latin American trip for the following year. I wanted to experience longterm travel that wasn’t tied to specific dates or locations.

STAFF PHOTO/

When did you first find out you have a permanent case of wanderlust?

Trinidad and Tobago Mexico

Start

Belize

Guatemala Honduras

Suriname Costa Rica French Guiana Brazil Guyana

Colombia

Bolivia

El Salvador Nicaragua

How long were you on the road and what were the countries/cities you visited?

I travelled around Latin America for 14 months. Twelve of those were done through ground travel (buses, boats and ferries) from Cancun, in the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico until the very south of Chile, passing through the Strait of Magellan to Puerto Williams, in Isla Navarino, the southern most city in the world. I then catapulted myself to the north until Guyana at the border with Venezuela.

How did you manage to afford to backpack for that long?

Panama

Paraguay

Ecuador

What were the things you carried with you at all times?

Peru Argentina

Uruguay

Chile

I was traveling with two backpacks: a big one with my clothes, shoes and big camera. The small backpack had another camera, laptop and personal belongings. The beauty with this style of traveling is that you usually don’t have much space other than your belongings. The only way to buy something new is to get rid of something old.

I saved up from my previous job. It’s not really expensive to backpack. The slower you go, the more you don’t spend. I mainly stayed in hostels and the food wasn’t expensive. When I found a town/city that I liked, I would stay there for a week or two. Long-term travel turns you into a budget expert. My motivation was: the more I saved, the longer I could travel. This does not mean that you have to be stingy rather you have to use your money wisely.

There’s so little information on your Instagram on where you stayed or who you met. Was it intentional or was it due to the nature of your travels?

In terms of trekking and hiking, you can always rent gear like jackets, hiking boots, pants, and so on.

Most memorable memory in your trip?

I have many but I think the most memorable was being in Patagonian Chile. Trekking for eight days through Torres del Paine and going to the isolated town of Puerto Williams in Isla Navarino.

Worst incident you encountered?

Forgetting my sunglasses in a bus in Argentina. 28 DESTINATION RIYADH DECEMBER 2015

I believe both. Although I chose to document some sights and sounds, this trip was also a personal one; it was mine. I get asked a lot to document more on other mediums, as well, but I chose to limit everything to mostly Instagram. I was traveling and enjoying the moment that a camera can sometimes disrupt. If I was on a fully paid/sponsored trip, I would have documented everything to my dirty laundry (seeking sponsors, wink wink).

One thing that you’d change if you could go back to the start of your trip? Absolutely nothing.

How did your family handle it?

Generally speaking, my family thinks I’m crazy, and I think that helped a lot. A trip like this was kind of expected. I broke the news to my parents, about quitting my job and going on this trip, a year earlier. So they had a full year

to absorb it. During the trip, communication was easy given the state of technology now.

Any plans on where you’ll be going next?

I really want to go back and complete the circle around South America. Venezuela was the only country that I did not visit, in the mainland of that continent. There’s a lot to see in the world and I want to see it all.

What advice would you give to anyone who wants to go backpacking?

Do it! It’s a wonderful experience. You learn a lot about yourself and your needs through traveling. You also become less attached to material. Most importantly, long-term travel forces you to tackle your fears and insecurities, and calibrates your preconceived notions and prejudices. samitokhais

Our Mother’s House Exhibit While rapid social change has threatened Asir’s one of a kind culture to wither, this exhibition helped preserve it. By Marya Atassi

Asir’s region of KSA has proved to become one of the country’s most outstanding areas for archeological and cultural sites. The region, namely Rijal Alma village, is home to authentic female artisans skilled in the traditional house painting.

The initiative, Our Mother’s House, highlighted the urgent matter of cultural heritage in addition to developing women’s equal representation in the Middle East, namely Saudi Arabia. Part of achieving the initiative’s goals, an art exhibition was launched from Nov. 16 – 27 in New York. The exhibition drew attention to and featured artwork by female artisans from the region. Along with that, two commissioned Asiri murals were showcased 30 DESTINATION RIYADH DECEMBER 2015

to commemorate hundreds of years of tradition from the village of Rijal Alma. While celebrating artistic production, the event also focused on the role women play in preserving the cultural identity of their communities, especially those marginalized within their societies. The exhibited artwork acted as a shedding light to the endangered role of women within the rural areas of Saudi Arabia. The exhibition also shed light on Saudi’s bid to recognize Rijal Alma’s village as an official UNESCO World Heritage site. Organized by the Middle East Institute (Washington DC), Nov. 20 hosted a reception and dedicated panel to the DESTINATIONRYD.COM 31

discussion and importance of women artists in cultivating their local history. Among the speakers were: Fatima Jaber, artist, house painter and founder of Fatima Museum in Abha, and Ali Moghawi, cultural historian and member of Rijal Alma UNESCO World Heritage Bid. Among the contributors to the event were the project advisors, including three Saudi artists Arwa Alnaemi, Ahmed Mater and Fatima Jaber; Ali Moghawi provides additional support. Another contributing artist is Jameelah Mater. While Alnaemi’s work is known for its examination of women to larger Saudi society, Mater’s work provides expertise in the study of Islamic culture and transformation in the region. Further support was provided by Kate Seelye, Middle East Institute’s Vice President. “There is a general misperception in the West that Saudi women play a very marginal role within their communities. “Our Mother’s House” highlights the fact that historically, in Asir province, women enjoyed a unique status as artisans who captured the community’s history and memories through their mural art. That tradition has been lost due to a variety of political and social reasons, but it’s possible that efforts such as this one will help to restore and preserve this valuable tradition.” – Kate Seelye, Vice President of Mission of KSA to the UN

ARTIST’S CORNER MEET THIS MONTH’S EMERGING ARTIST! By Johara Almogbel

Why do you art?

Art is something I enjoy doing, it relaxes me and it is my getaway when life gets hard.

How do you think up your concepts?

I get inspired by the phrase itself, there’s a saying that says “a writer chooses his script, but a calligrapher is chosen by the script.”

What is, in your opinion, the best thing you’ve ever created and why?

One of the closest artworks to my heart is the mural I did for an architect’s office that said “Beauty lies within the details.” I was assigned to provide an art piece of choice so I chose this particular phrase because architecture is built upon little details that assemble the complete final product, and that every little detail matters no matter how small these details are.

NAME: Yousef Yahya AGE: 24 OCCUPATION:

Architect

MEDIUM:

Calligraphy around them to create the saying, so when you see this mural from far you read the sentence, but when you get closer, you see that beauty lies within the details.

What does being creative mean to you?

Who are your role models?

An artwork by the artist Naser Al Salem that represented a verse from the Qur’an: “All things we have created in proportions and measure.”

It's hard to choose just one, because a lot of artists have inspired me like the Turkish calligrapher Ali Toy, Wesam Shawkat, and many modern calligraphers such as Jamal Al Rabe’a.

To see beauty where no one else sees it.

While the gym facilities can stand on their own, the Dojo is definitely a major element of this zone. A gem polished through years of experience brought in by sensei Budoor, a world class karate champion herself.

TOASTMASTERS in Saudi Arabia By Lama Ghazzawi

This is the motto every toastmaster lives by. A public speaking and leadership club, Toastmasters has helped people from all walks of life and around the world become better versions of themselves. In the year 1924, Ralph Smedley founded the Toastmasters Club all the way in the United States. Hoping to give gentlemen a place where they can practice giving speeches, gain a little more confidence and build intellectually articulate tongues, Smedley was persistent even though he didn’t succeed greatly at first. He worked hard against all the challenges faced until he was able to launch the Toastmasters International Club, which flourished in the early 30s. Women, however, were not invited into the club until 1970, when Toastmasters International admitted its first female member, Helen Blanchard, under the name Homer Blanchard. In 1973, Toastmasters began officially admitting women.

40 DESTINATION RIYADH DECEMBER 2015

In the past 10 years, Saudi Arabia joined the world in starting several Toastmasters Clubs all over the country and hosting many local debates, contests as well as participating in international championships. Prince Sultan University is one of the first institutes to introduce Toastmasters into the local Saudi community. This year, they’ve celebrated their 10th anniversary and hosted a number of very interesting and inspiring speeches to further push them towards continuing their journey to success and empowerment. Many other educational institutes and companies host Toastmasters meetings, and recently, they’ve begun to have them in Arabic as well.

SOURCE PHOTO/FOUNDERS: TOASTMASTERS.ORG

For better listening, for better speaking, for better thinking, we learn by doing.

The Toastmasters Club is not only about giving speeches, but also about teamwork, dedication and professionalism. Being part of a club like this is not only a great way of self-improvement, but also a really shiny gold star on your resume. Companies have insights on these sorts of things and they know exactly what a member of the Toastmasters Club can do. Members gain various skills and knowledge, but most importantly, they have confidence in sharing their ideas which extend further than any stage. Giving people the ability to share their opinions through training and providing constructive feedback helps create an opinionated, intellectual society that will bring everyone around them up as they go. HEADING EAST

FROM THE CAPITAL TO THE BEACH Our tried and tested guide to driving to the Eastern Province. By Jou Pabalate and Seyma Saricimen

WHAT TO KEEP AN EYE OUT FOR

1. The Road - There are no lights so head out earlier in the day to avoid the darkness.

2. Gas Stations - There are around 13 of them throughout the trip and they generally have coffee shops, markets, toilets and prayer rooms (although it would be advised to stay away from the toilets). 3. The 9th gas station is Sasco, which has yummy places like Cinnabon, Dominos Pizza, Kudu, Burger King, Baskin Robbins, Shawermer and other interesting places. 4. Fog and Sand Storms Drive slow and don’t go with the general flow of wild driving.

42 DESTINATION RIYADH DECEMBER 2015

5. Camels - It’s not very common but at times you might come across a flock of camels on the sides of the road. 6. Crazy drivers! It doesn’t matter how everyone else is driving, take your time and don’t join the race against time.

7. Trucks - Steer away when you notice trucks! Them trucks think that they’re on an F1 track.

8. Speed Cameras - There are cameras quiet often drive safe.

Distance: 436 kilometers Time: Approximately 4 hours Gas: One full tank should be enough = 6 liters Budget: SR 30 – 35 for gas

WHAT TO PACK

1. Leave your moisturizer back in Riyadh; the east has got your (dry) back.

2. An anti-frizz spray for those hairs that are going to try to escape the humidity. 3. A swimsuit and tanning oil, because it’s time to hit the beaches. 4. Your passport for a day well spent in the neighboring Bahrain. It really should just be a part of Saudi.

ROAD TRIP TIPS Car Check-Up – Check tire pressure, gas tank and fluid levels. Make sure you have a spare tire and the tools needed to change a flat one. Snack Pack – Teapot, nuts, fruits or some junk food. Don’t really worry about it though since you can grab yourself a coffee or anything from the roadside gas stations. Entertainment – Anything to keep you awake. You can download audiobooks or comedy shows, put together a great playlist, or even get a book with you if reading in the car doesn’t get you sick. Snapchat! This is essential 2015 road trip must-do. It

helps you document your trip, update your friends and pass time. Take a Selfie – You could always stop on the side of the road to take selfies with the desert or camels behind you. The amazing variety of different sands on the road will make you want to stop anyway. Soaping the car-Don’t bother with soaping your car. It does you as much harm as the sand. Toys - If you’ve got children, make sure to get some entertainment with you like toys, an iPad or portable consoles to keep them busy.

Take our current preference for the beauty of everything vintage, fashion, music, and art, from platform mules to crop tops, ankle socks, shirt-dresses, mini backpacks, flares, from 60s pop music to art deco furniture. It’s not just about being a hipster and rejecting the new because it’s too new or mainstream. It’s an actual physical reaction to our hightech-orientated world of instant, on one scale, and boredom on the other. Through it all, romancing oneself, visiting previously known and loved spaces of mind is perennial.

Golden Spoon Crinkle cookies are always a good idea. And halgoom (Turkish delights) stuffed with biscuits? Definitely a good idea. Since we like good ideas, we ordered them immediately for a party. Delivery was easy, and the goodies were packaged in a plain white box. The crinkle cookies were stuffed with Nutella and were delicious, and the oreo stuffed halgooms made for an interesting combination, plus they looked great on a tray as they’re decorated with small flowers. Our only complaint was the

consistency: the first time we’d ordered, the halgooms were a bit dry and the cookies not so moist as if they were made a while ago, but when we tried it again, it was freshly made and really delicious. This jury’s on the fence but secretly quite satisfied. DR Tip: Put your order in the day before for a fresh batch, that might make the quality consistent. It's a simple enough do-it-yourself assembly line cafeteria; you first get a small bowl of rice and then you get to choose from the vast varieties on display all served in small plates. We got a mix of almost everything, mainly chicken adobo and meat curry as well as fish but

missed the sweet and sour chicken as unfortunately for us they were out of that. I also noticed while eating they serve other orders out of the assembly line like hot pot meat/ veggie stew that I have always wanted but never tried. They also serve sioapo, which is a white bun stuffed with either chicken or meat and dipped into a special kind of sauce. And they have a decent halo halo station with milkshake cups! And ube cakes! (Ube is a

My Vegan Month in Riyadh

A tale of meatless kabsas and cheeseless sambosas. By Coach Sara

Last year, about 18 weeks into my program to become a certified health coach, I decided to be a vegan. It all started with a folder of videos titled “Factory Farming and the Unethical Treatment of Animals.” I still remember the warning in big bold red saying “not suitable for the faint-hearted” but I watched the video anyway. It was a sneak-peak of what happens behind closed doors in farm factories. By the next morning, I had abstained from consuming animals and animal byproducts. I went through a whole hippie no food from animals, no leather, and even no diamonds phase (I was convinced that what little diamonds I had came from a small mine in Africa, saved by Leonardo Di Caprio). I was now a savior of the world, an active member in my community. I was a proud hippie Saudi vegan… Until I wasn’t.

62 DESTINATION RIYADH DECEMBER 2015

WEEK ONE Week one as a new dedicated vegan, my grocery shopping list consisted mainly of fruit, vegetables, raw nuts, nut milks, beans and grains. I made sure to add plant sources high in protein and iron. I read the food labels to make sure there were no eggs or dairy in the ingredients. I even added a B12 and probiotic supplement. I was set to go. Thankfully, due to the notable increasing awareness of healthy food and organic options in Riyadh, I had no problems finding what I needed even if it was out of the norm like seaweed veggies and cashew butter.

AT HOME

AT WORK

Things did not go as smoothly as my supermarket experience. My mom was not sure exactly what I was doing, but she was hoping it was only a phase—and it was; mothers know best.

I was not included in any breakfast celebrations or coffee invitations because, and I quote, “We don’t know which diet you’re following this week,” so my mission was to be the first one at any meeting or coworker party that ends with a buffet to get my hands on all the stuffed grape leaves as fast as possible.

So there I was on Friday’s family meetings asking for my kabsa to be meatless and soup to be cooked with vegetable broth instead of chicken. At that time, I was adversely sensitive to the smell of animal products. It’s amazing how your senses get involved in the eating process (try to explain veganism to your aunts and you are guaranteed a Game of Thrones battle scene).

New life, new standards.

THE

WEEK TWO Mid-week two, I started to feel the burden of maintaining a vegan, plant-based diet so I decided to add fish and seafood into the mix and oh how happy I was. But wait, that doesn’t make me a vegan anymore. That doesn’t even make me a lacto-vegetarian or an ovo-lacto-vegetarian or a pescitarian (though I thought I was) because I was still off eggs and dairy.

RESULTS FLEXITARIAN In reality, I was a flexitarian, an on-andoff vegetarian doing my best to limit meat and animal products and have an almost entirely plant-based diet. So this is not considered a vegetarian diet but I was happy with the title. Then, cheganism happened – A form of veganism where you eat junk food but you are still vegan. In other words, I sometimes ate vegetarian junk food such as French fries and chips because it was convenient (guilty). I know all these titles are confusing and I promise I did not add them to show off my fancy words.

There is no such thing as a diet-fits all. Make up your own definition of healthy, your own terminology of happy. — Coach Sara

For the rest of the month I was enjoying the benefits of a flexitarian diet, my smaller waistline, a glowing skin, a better mood, an improved athletic performance and my long uninterrupted night sleeps (thank you, omega-3s). If things were going so well, then why did I stop? Well, I went to Paris to celebrate my 30th birthday, and I knew I couldn’t (and wouldn’t) be able to resist all the cheese and baguettes. But these titles helped me realize: you don’t have to have a title. You don’t have to follow a certain diet devotedly. Respect your body’s needs and pay attention to how you feel. Experiment with what works for your body at this time in your life. Today, I enjoy my vegetarian dairy-gluten-sugar free meals as much as I enjoy my high quality-organic-medium-well steaks. Some days, I eat salads and go to the gym. Some days, I eat cupcakes and refuse to put on pants. It’s called balance. So what did I learn from this one month experience? I learned that we are blessed with bodies and digestive systems that tell us what we need, we just have to listen. DESTINATIONRYD.COM 63

HOW TO EAT HEALTHY AND STILL BE HAPPY A few favorites that actually keep you running properly. By Johara Almogbel

Now, we’re all for healthy bodies. Fully functioning organ vessels make for a fully functioning brain, and we need our brains to work so we could use them to figure out how to procrastinate long enough to catch up on all the Futurama reruns. The only issue is that we’re too attached to our taste buds. We can only eat healthy for so long before a craving for fries and donuts set in. But what if some of the stuff we were eating was actually good for us? Just keep in mind: all is fair as long as you keep mind of the portions.

64 DESTINATION RIYADH DECEMBER 2015

Falafel But how could falafel be healthy? They’re FRIED. Apparently, the fact that they’re made of up chickpeas bypasses the frying bit, especially if it’s done with olive oil. When fried cleanly, it’s considered a high quality source for protein that’s also low in calories. Plus, 3.6 ounces (three falafels) gives you about 26 percent of the daily recommended fiber. We know, we were surprised too.

Popcorn Ah, popcorn. There’s no greater joy than the satisfaction that comes with mashing your face with a fistful of the stuff. And, it turns out that as long as you stay away from the movie popcorn type, it contains antioxidants, fiber and is entirely whole grain. If you’re dieting and need a snack? Popcorn works in a pinch. No pun intended.

Chocolate Dark chocolate, to be exact, is the healthy food world’s secret hidden cousin. We have a sneaking suspicion that even the health nuts couldn’t stay away from the addicting sweet, so scientists made up the fact that it’s good for your heart for them, but, hey, it’s good for your heart! It’s got antioxidants and anti-inflammatory substances that help make your blood pump ticking.

WE ARE GOING TO ASSUME MILK CHOCOLATE’S JUST AS HEALTHY ON OUR OWN.

YUM.

Baked Potatoes Nothing fills a person up like a good, stuffed, piping hot baked potato. They’re easy to make, and they’re pure happy food. We even think they might be better than fries. Luckily, they also happen to be high in carbs, calories and starch, as well as being fat free and containing fiber, potassium, vitamin C and vitamin B. Keep the skin on for maximum benefit!

WE APPROVE OF MAXIMUM BENEFIT. IN OUR BELLIES. DESTINATIONRYD.COM 65

Truth

Myth Our focus is to turn the light on these hard-held beliefs on fitness, training, and health and to shed away the misconceptions that, despite the wealth of knowledge in the wellness industry, still exist today. By Mirvat Ammouri

Working out in the morning burns more fat..

There is an indirect relationship between timing and fat burn. It is NOT a cause/effect relationship. Therefore, giving a clear answer is difficult since fat burning depends on many other factors. Exercise burns both stored fats and sugars for energy. Burning more fat or sugar depends on many factors including the intensity and length of the workout, stored sugar levels in the muscles, and so on.

Workout timing affects these factors, which then affect how much fat we burn. Cortisol is a hormone that helps the body respond to stress, including exercise. It is generally highest in the morning, and decreases during the day. Therefore, the body is better suited to

Conclusion Workout times are a personal choice and a habit. Choose what works for you.

respond to exercise in the morning. However, some people may feel more energetic during the day, especially after eating their meals. Also, because most gyms in Saudi don’t open early in the morning and the sun is quite intense, it might be easier to commit to fitness in the afternoons.

Recommendation Whatever time you choose to workout, make sure you are consistent and committed. If you can, mix the workout timings, so your body is challenged every time. If you choose the mornings, try training in a fasted state, on an empty stomach a few times. For High Intensity trainings however, it’s better to eat something like a small fruit or a shake before your workout.

HEALTH IS WEALTH The different types of health we should take more seriously. By Reem Zahid

70 DESTINATION RIYADH DECEMBER 2015

Social Health

Social health is the ability to interact well with people and the environment and to have satisfying personal relationships. It’s nice to maintain a good relationship with the people around you and have healthy connections with them. No matter what happens between you and a person, forgive and clear all the bad vibes from that relationship and go back to how clear and pure the relationship was. Remember that forgiveness is the key to happiness and peace of mind.

Emotional Health

It’s the ability to control emotions so that you feel comfortable expressing them and can express them appropriately. Some people don't know how to express their emotions or they express them in a wrong way (opposite of what they really feel inside). Try reading books, watching movies, talking to your family or confidants – anything to get out of the bubble you sheltered yourself with. Express your feelings correctly.

Mental Heath

It’s the ability to learn and grow intellectually. Life experiences as well as more formal structures such as schools, enhance mental health. You always have to work and train your mind and make it go through experiences that make you learn. Not all experiences should be good. Don’t let the bad experiences stop you from trying other things. Learn from your mistakes and have a healthy smart mind.

Body Health

I’m not asking you to quit junk food entirely. Too much of anything is bad. Don't harm yourself and be kind to your body. Notice how irritable or lethargic you get after eating junk food and compare it to how energetic you feel, how your skin glows and how your mood becomes 10 times better when you have fruits and nutritious food.

Another thing in emotional health is to learn to always accept the bad as much as you accept the good. Don't get devastated when a bad thing happens to you, but turn it into something positive. We all go through rough times but always know that you are strong enough to put up with whatever life throws at you. Always remember that everything happens for a reason and there’s always a lesson from God. So just relax. Your life is in God’s hands, what is more comforting than that?

SUPER SUNNAHS We Should Begin to Follow

PART

2

“Whoever revives my Sunnah then he has loved me. And whoever loved me, he shall be with me in Paradise.” – The Prophet (PBUH) [Tirmidhi]

Visiting the Sick

Visiting and spending time with the ill has two major benefits: You demonstrate love towards another, instantly tightening the bonds of kinship/ friendship. Also, to see someone who is unable to function as well as they normally can, is a strong reminder to all of us of the health blessing that we currently have and take for granted.

Feed the hungry, visit the sick, and set free the captives. — [Bukhari] The Prophet (PBUH)

Sitting When Eating/Drinking

It was narrated from Anas: “The Prophet prohibited that a man should drink while standing.” (Qatadah said) So it was said: “And eating?” He (Anas) said: “That is worse.” [Tirmidhi]

Sitting down to eat slows a person in their eating habits, reducing the amount they are likely to eat and the unhealthy speed by which they do so.

Sleeping On Your Right Side

One of the main points to consider when you want to have a productive day is to look at how you go to sleep. The Prophet (PBUH) was the most successful in how he spent his days and the way in which he took to his sleep, plays a role in helping him be the way he was. 72 DESTINATION RIYADH DECEMBER 2015

“When Allah’s Messenger went to bed, he used to sleep on his right side.”[Bukhari]

Untying the Three Knots

Allah’s Messenger said: “During your sleep, Satan knots three knots at the back of the head of each of you, and he breathes the following words at each knot, ‘The night is, long, so keep on sleeping.’ If that person wakes up and celebrates the praises of Allah, then one knot is undone, and when he performs ablution the second knot is undone, and when he prays, all the knots are undone, and he gets up in the morning lively and in good spirits, otherwise he gets up in low spirits and lethargic.” [Bukhari]

Doing Hijama (Cupping)

The Prophet would be cupped on a regular basis. This form of treatment has been used throughout history in a number of countries.

Saying Salam/Bismillah Before Entering a House

The Messenger of Allah said: “If a person mentions the Name of Allah upon entering his house or eating, Satan says, addressing his followers: ‘You will find nowhere to spend the night and no dinner.’ But if he enters without mentioning the Name of Allah, Satan says (to his followers); ‘You have found (a place) to spend the night in, and if he does not mention the Name of Allah at the time of eating, Satan says: ‘You have found (a place) to spend the night in as well as food.” [Muslim]

If there is any healing in your medicines, then it is in cupping, a gulp of honey or branding with fire (cauterization) that suits the ailment, but I don’t like to be (cauterized) branded with fire. [Bukhari] — The Prophet (PBUH)

SPIRITUALITY

SPREAD KINDNESS Kindness: (n) The quality of being friendly, generous and considerate.

Being kind is something most people inherently are, right?

Well, you’d be surprised, as some people equate being kind with being weak, and so resort to hiding behind a tough exterior. The argument often used is that being kind opens you up to others taking advantage of you or using you. While this may be the case, it is sad to know that the actions of a few people that are ungrateful or 74 DESTINATION RIYADH DECEMBER 2015

mean can change a person’s own attitude so much so that they refrain from showing kindness to anybody. Instead of kindness being an intrinsic characteristic that everyone has, there is actually a day to encourage it called “World Kindness Day.” To Muslims though, this should be a strange concept

as being kind is an essential part of being a Muslim, and should be practiced every day. In fact, Allah has many names and attributes, and two of these are Ar Rafeeq (The Gentle) and Al Lateef (The Most Kind). Allah mentions in the Qur’an that Muslims should be kind, but goes further on to state specifically who to be kind to.

proper relations with their relatives.” (Qur’an, chapter 16, part of verse 90)

Your Parents

You would think this is a given, but how many people are rude to their parents or talk to them in a disrespectful manner? Allah says: “Your Lord has ordained that you must not worship anything other than Him, and that you should be kind to your parents. Never yell at them but always speak to them with kindness.” (Qur’an, chapter 17, part of verse 23)

And Many More

Also mentioned, specifically in the Qur’an, are neighbors

(chapter 4, verse 36); the needy (chapter 90, verse 12-17); orphans (chapter 4, verse 8); pious believers (chapter 26, verse 215); and Converts to Islam (chapter 24, verse 22).

Your Spouse

It’s all too easy to take out the stresses of the day by snapping at your husband or wife, or blaming them for things going wrong. “…and He placed between you affection and Mercy…” (Qur’an, chapter 30, verse 21)

Your Family

How many of us argue with and fall out with family members on a daily basis? “Allah commands (people) to maintain justice, kindness and

Allah also tells Muslims to be kind to Non-Muslims (despite what the media may lead you to believe). “Invite (all) to the Way of your Lord with wisdom and beautiful preaching.” (Qur’an, chapter 16, verse 125)

Basically, the list above implies that we should be kind to every single human being. If we were to follow the religion of Islam properly, and emulate the actions of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), then there would be no need for world kindness day at all. DESTINATIONRYD.COM 75

BOUNCING THROUGH

THE BEAUTIFUL BALTIC Europe’s ultimate motorhome destination. Sitting on mainland Europe’s northeastern tip, virtually kissing Scandinavia, the Baltic states of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia don’t exactly spring to mind when you think of a motorhome holiday destination. But with guaranteed summer sun, gorgeous campsites, stunning coastal drives and none of the crowds of western Europe, travel writer Tharik Hussain Says the Baltic is the ideal motorhome destination. In this ultimate guide, Tharik shares his findings having 78 DESTINATION RIYADH DECEMBER 2015

spent two glorious weeks with his family in a 5-berth ‘camper’ (as they are known here) exploring one of Europe’s least visited regions. And that’s not all, as the foremost European Muslim heritage travel expert, Tharik will also be writing a special on the Baltic’s amazing Islamic history next month, which is not to be missed.

Family Friendly

From child-friendly itineraries in the cities to shallow waters on the beaches, there is something for children almost everywhere you go in the Baltic. Campsites always seem

to have child-friendly play parks and rarely will you pay an entrance fee for children at tourist sites.

Campsites

Campsites are everywhere, and often in delightful settings. We camped by the sea, on lakes, in the woods and even by a river. Stick to the ones with a caravan sign, as this guarantees electric hook-ups and water. Most sites however are a bit behind when it comes to things like waste tank drainage and chemical toilet disposal.

Trakai Lake

Our top three were: Camp Inn on a lake beach on the outskirts of Kaunas in Lithuania, Vinrozes on the bank of Lake Durbe in Latvia, and Kivi Talu in wooded Juri, just outside Tallinn in Estonia.

Groceries

Stick to large chain supermarkets to keep costs down. You can buy everything you need in the really large Maxima supermarkets, but for value, head to the smaller Iki stores. All of these serve

fresh fruit and veg and the larger stores also have meat, fish and deli counters.

Going ‘Off Grid’

Although strictly speaking ‘rough’ camper vanning is not permissible, the rules seem pretty relaxed outside of the main cities. So if you pull up for a night or two beside a remote, deserted beach, you’ll probably be alright.

Suggested Itinerary

Barring Lithuania, where the capital is in the south east, most of the major cities overlook the Baltic Sea, so the best itinerary sticks closely to DESTINATIONRYD.COM 79

the western coastline. Our round trip starting and ending in Vilnius, headed for the sea and over to the UNESCO World Heritage site, the Curonian Spit before staying more or less on the coast up into Latvia, stopping at various delightful towns like Jumeira and then on to Estonia. On our return leg, we came back through the middle but avoided the roads in eastern Latvia.

City Access

Driving a camper into a busy urban area is not a good idea. Fortunately, all three capitals have ‘city’ campsites near enough to access the centers easily by public transport.

Weather

Stick to the summer months; not only are the Baltic states guaranteed sunshine during this period, but the days are nice and long. This is a blessing as it means you won’t all be cooped up inside your camper all the time. Though insect repellant is a must!

Roads and Navigation

Roads are excellent in Estonia, 80 DESTINATION RIYADH DECEMBER 2015

good in Lithuania and awful in Latvia away from the cities. On the plus side, the Baltic is more or less flat throughout and so you will never find yourself crawling up any steep hillsides with your camper. Major roads are only one or two lanes and in much of Lithuania they have annoying depressions from overuse, which make controlling a camper at speed a tad tricky. As well as a ‘back-up’ paper map, it is wise to have a satellite-navigation unit.

Legal Driving Stuff

All international driving licenses bearing photos are accepted and all three Baltic states are part of the Green

Card System, which means no extra insurance is required to cross borders.

Baltic for Muslims

At first glance the Baltic seems a strange place for Muslims, but as our special feature next month will show, the region has a fascinating Islamic history that goes back several centuries. Today though, Muslims are very much a minority with most of those that attend the mosques either converts or migrants. There

is a mosque in each capital, but all three are in obscure, converted buildings in outer regions. Halal food is virtually non existent, barring exclusive spots in places like Kaunas, which also has the region›s only functioning purpose built mosque. Men and women dressing conservatively will stand out, especially in headscarves and burkas, as these are highly unusual here. However, barring the odd stare, you will not be bothered.

Useful Tips

All three nations speak their own language. English is spoken widely in the main cities and German and Russian is understood in many rural areas. The tourist office in Vilnius is extremely helpful in sourcing campervans locally and offering practical advice, as too the tourism office in Tallinn. For those who wish to meet the Baltic Muslim community, the organization Islamas Visiems is amazing and full of friendly, enthusiastic people. Kaunas Mosque

• The best airline are Turkish and Lufthansa which fly from Jeddah to Vilnius with one stopover in their respective capitals starting from approx SR 4,000. MUST HAVE •A Schengen visa is required for Saudi nationals. • A good travel guide and phrasebook. • A Satellite Navigation unit. •A back up paper map of the Baltic states. MUST DO •Stay in a magical wooded campsite. • Spend a night on the Curonian Spit. • Find a hidden beach along the Latvian coast. • Wander the old town of Tallinn. WHEN THE BORDERS CROSSED Our journey to Haql, via many historic cities. By T. Salim

Across the sea, northern tip of the Gulf of Aqaba meets Taba, Egypt’s busiest border crossing with Palestine. At Haql on a good night, standing on Saudi soil, you can watch Jordan, Egypt and Palestine. We took the road through Yanbu, Umluj, Al Wajh to 82 DESTINATION RIYADH DECEMBER 2015

PHOTO/

Haql was our destination and our aim was to visit as many places on the way in five days. We started our journey from Jeddah. Haql is at the edge of the Asian continent, at the coast of Gulf of Aqaba.

Tabuk. Coming from Jeddah, the greenery of Yanbu Royal Commission was refreshing. The Royal Commission was established in 1975 as a planned Industrial city. With clean and well-marked roads, lush green parks and meticulously aligned streets, that planning is worth seeing. We played football on feather beds of grass, enjoyed swimming in the blue waters of Yanbu beach. Outside the neatness of Royal Commission stood the colorless Yanbu city. Umluj, a village known for fresh seafood and pristine beaches, is 150 kilometers north of Yanbu Al Bahr. But we took a wrong turn and soon engulfed in a sand storm. We had to stop because of lack of

visibility. We crossed Al Wajh, another city known for fishing, by the evening. Crisscrossed hill road laid in front of us. It was past midnight when we reached Tabuk.

representatives performed their prayers during the inauguration of Tabuk station of Hijaz Railway in 1907. We played football at the park adjacent to the Hijaz Railway museum.

There are many farms in Tabuk. We visited one and came to know about modern organic farming methods. Tabuk war is well known in Islamic history. It represented the beginning of many Arab-Byzantine conflicts. We performed evening prayers at the same masjid where the Prophet (PBUH) led prayers many centuries back. It was in this same masjid, Turkish

It’s around 230 kilometers to Haql from Tabuk. You have to be there at night to enjoy the view. We left in the morning. The rock structures on both sides of the road were stunning. After traveling around 175 kilometers we reached AlSharaf and took deviation to Al Duba, a distance of around 70 kilometers. Madaen Shuaib, the city of Prophet Shuaib, is near Al Duba. Prophet Shuaib is the grandson of Prophet Ibrahim, who is revered by all Semitic religions. Ferries and ships from the port city, Al Duba, can reach ports of Egypt in three hours. Locals call Al Duba the Pearl of the Red Sea. Prophet Musa settled in Madian where Prophet Shuaib hosted him. An ancient well related to Prophet Musa is still there. Maqna Beach, at the tip of Gulf of Aqaba, is 60 kilometers from Al Duba. We were amazed at the beautiful settings of the beach and the Sinai Mountains in the background. We enjoyed swimming in the narrow stretch of blue waters that separates Asia and Africa. The maximum width of Gulf of Aqaba is just 24 kilometers. It was past eight in the evening when we reached Haql. The red sky, blue waters, the huge shadow of Sinai Mountains in the twilight created an enchanting view. DESTINATIONRYD.COM 83

Huge writings on the hillsides gleamed in light. At the border, a few vehicles were waiting at the border crossing to enter Jordan. Coffee shops were busy and there were many police vehicles. But people moved freely, no heavy air of an international border. We stood on the road in near darkness, looking across the sea. Sharm Al Sheikh, Egypt’s jewel, and Palestine looked so

close. We could see the lights. The weight of history seemed to be hanging in the air. The road is about 50 meters above sea level. Children were playing at the seashore. On our return back to Tabuk, most of us were silent. Those countries, so close but so far. History as a theater, its drama, its actors might have been playing in our mind. On the way back from Tabuk, we decided to visit Taima, an important place in old caravan route, 250 kilometers away from Tabuk. Present Taima looked like a sleepy, languid city. Bi’r al Haddaj,

extraordinary well dating back to Babylonian’s time of around 1st BC, is one of the oldest and largest in the Kingdom. The draw wheels for bringing water using camels and ropes are still there. Taima is also one of the largest archaeological sites in the Kingdom. We arrived at the UNESCO world heritage site, Madain Saleh, by the afternoon, traveling 250 kilometers further. Saudi Arabia is a land of prophets and civilizations. There is a huge tourism potential. The Kingdom has built good networks of roads through the deserts. The only thing it lacks is public transports to these historical sites. And most of the visitors are in dark about the importance of these places. HISTORIC SAUDI

Al Dosrih Fort An example of Jizan’s rich history.

Sitting over 150 meters above ground level, this impregnable fortress is one of the last remaining examples of the region’s rich history. It is at times referred to as the Jizan Fort. The fort dates back to the Ottoman era and was the seat of the governor of the Jizan region. It is rather small in size, covering an area measuring around 900 square meters, thus resembling more of a barracks rather than a fortress. However, again contrary to that opinion it has many rooms that are allocated for housing purposes. Within the fort some places have been reinforced with iron. These are believed to be later editions, from a time after the Kingdom’s founding and not belonging to the Ottoman era.

86 DESTINATION RIYADH DECEMBER 2015

Similar to other Turkish forts, The Al Dosrih Fort has four circular towers on all corners. Inside, the fort has a large courtyard that is flanked by an arched stable for horses. A pair of ladders takes one down towards an underground chamber that functioned as a cellar. The fort is relatively impregnable due its location on one of the higher mountains on the west of Jizan. Its location allows it to overlook the sea to the west and the city below almost simultaneously. Over the years the fort had fallen into depletion; however, it has recently been restored. The walls now carry white plaster and are reinforced with stucco stone.
