FROM THE EDITOR

GET YOUR FITSPIRATION! How many of us say, “I’m going to get active this weekend” but end up curled in our couches and glued to our screens all day? As you may know, we love food and like every Riyadhi, we do have our lazy days. And you know what? We’re perfectly fine with it and you should be too. You see, falling off the health wagon happens. What matters is having the will and making the conscious effort to get back on it. Our editors aren’t cut out to be drill sergeants, we’re coaches. Hence, with this in mind, the November Health issue is all about articles that will motivate and inspire you to be better, stronger and healthier versions of yourselves. Start off by making small changes that will make a big difference. As small as getting your dose of organic food. Follow it up with easy breezy exercise tips for newbies and get the low down on local classes you can take to bring fun and fitness into your routine. All warmed up and ready for a boost? Then it’s time to read about the first Saudi Iron Man in history; from couch potato to now, fitness guru. We also have the low down on boxing for fitness in Riyadh for those of you who want to punch your calories away. For those seeking a more holistic approach to wellness, don’t miss the article on Alaa Abanomi, who’s using yoga as a form of therapy. Getting fit doesn’t have to be confined. With the cooler months upon us, why not take advantage and do some strolling? Start off with a visit to the World Sights Park or perhaps take a walking excursion around the city. Riyadh never seizes to amaze us. One of the things we love about the capital is how it is evolving month after month. We feel privileged to be witnessing all the wonderful changes and being able to share them with you. Till next time dear readers, your apple for the day is… Run your life with enthusiasm, dive into your passions and jump out of your comfort zones.

Saudis Spend SR 400 Million in Bahrain During Eid

During the three days of Eid Al Adha, more than 300 Saudis spent more than SR 400 million on secondary and not basic needs such as insurance, food and gas excluding lodging charges. An investor, who preferred to remain anonymous, said that many Saudi visitors visiting Bahrain do not actually reside there but return to the Eastern Province at the end of each day. Charges in hotels and furnished apartments are very high during seasons and could reach up to SR 2,000 per night during Eid. He expected that the total spending of travelers during Eid could cost more than the estimated SR 400 million.

Four Confirmed MERS Cases in PNU, College Does Not Evacuate Four janitors working in the Princess Nora University were diagnosed with MERS this October and the college handled it very badly. Students and members of the staff report that they were not informed, and only discovered the news via an unofficial Instagram

account that was run by other students. Classes continued as usual, when the university should have shut that particular building down and disinfected it. If you are an institution or a company and an individual contracts the disease, please do NOT cover it up. It only exacerbates the problem further and pushes it to becoming an epidemic when it could be easily contained.

FINANCIAL PLANNING WITH REEM ASAAD Cancer Geneticist Dr. Malak Abed and Women’s Hospital and Dana Farber Cancer Institute in Boston.

Why is cancer treatment so expensive?

The diagnosis and treatment process is costly. It involves hospital visits, tests, surgery, hospitalization, radiation and chemotherapy. Also, the high cost of medication is due to the R&D involved in developing the drugs. Luckily, cancer treatment in KSA is generally covered by insurance providers and may be offered for free in public hospitals.

What types of cancer should women in KSA be wary of? As an ambassador of 10KSA, I wrote last month about cancer. Contrary to common belief, cancer is no longer a death sentence. In many cases it is, but progress in the field has been immense and is often lost between professional publishing, popular science and mainstream interpretation. This week, I managed to steal a few minutes from a cancer geneticist with remarkable contributions in her field. Her name is Dr. Malak Abed, a young Saudi doctor who specializes in molecular genetics pathology. She studied and worked in the U.S. since 2005 and her journey was full of sweat and motivation. Starting with education, Dr. Abed earned an M.D. from King Abdulaziz University. She became a resident in pathology at Georgetown University Hospital, then went on as a fellow at UCSF and Harvard Medical School. Presently, she is a researcher and instructor at Brigham 18 DESTINATION RIYADH NOVEMBER 2015

Breast, thyroid, lung and cervical cancers. Screening is available for breast and cervical cancers.

Your key words of advice?

What is “cancer genetics”? Cancer genetics is a study of the changes in genes that cause cancer.

Is cancer really hereditary or lifestyle induced? Cancer is a genetic disease (difference between genetic and hereditary). Practically, it is a mix of both, i.e. it can be inherited (rare) or caused by a gene mutation that occurs during life.

• Do your screening regularly. Do not discontinue. • Exercise and proper diet contribute to preventing the development and progression of cancer in our bodies. Get Your Organic Dosage If you are venturing into an organic food adventure, here's what you need to know. By Sohila El Saadany

One of the places that both grows and sells organic food is Organica, the farm located in Yanbu Al Nakheel. Its managing director, Asaad Numan, gives us the intel.

To Your Door More places such as restaurants or supermarkets across the Kingdom are now offering organic foods and healthy meals to encourage people to follow that path. So it is no longer a hassle to locate or buy organic foods. Don’t slack off! Organica established its name in the world of organic farming and pesticide free produce. Located in Yanbu Al Nakheel, the farm produces a wide variety of vegetables, dates, free-range eggs and lamb meat.

DESTINATIONRYD.COM 23

Did You Know According to Khalid Al Fuhaid, Deputy Minister of Agriculture, there are more than

130

organic farms in KSA today. Products labeled

“organic”

may be more expensive because production is often on a smaller scale and with stricter regulations.

Advantages of organic meat include reduced exposure to antibioticresistant bacteria.

Sahal and Saud Numan purchased the farm in the early 90’s and years later, Asaad Numan, Sahal’s son, took it to the next level. He started the ecommerce delivery platform through the Organica website. Numan explains, “Organic farming is a technique involving the cultivation of plants and the rearing of animals in natural ways. This process involves the use of biological materials and avoids synthetic substances to maintain

24 DESTINATION RIYADH NOVEMBER 2015

soil fertility and ecological balance. Organic farming makes use of pesticides and fertilizers if they are considered natural.” Numan believes that the organic food movement is paramount to the Saudi society “The movement in KSA will definitely pick up and with the encouragement of the Ministry of Agriculture – we will see more Saudi farms that will convert to organic farming and supply more organic food to the people.”

In early 2011, the Saudi National Organic Logo was created. This seal is only allowed on foods that contain at least 95 percent organic ingredients. The term,

“made with organic ingredients,” means the product contains at least of

70

percent organic ingredients.

ALWALEED ALKEAID

FROM COUCH POTATO TO IRON MAN He swam 3.8 kilometers, cycled another 120 and ran 42.2 kilometers to become the first Saudi Iron Man in history. By Jou Pabalate

26 DESTINATION RIYADH NOVEMBER 2015

I was confronted with a strong feeling of shame. Here I am, young and able, sitting around while these two, despite their circumstance were doing something no one thought they could. – Alwaleed Alkeaid

To say that the Iron Man triathlon is not for the faint of heart and limbs is an understatement. Athletes would spend years mastering the triumvirate of endurance. So, imagine how much harder it is if you were attempting to do it in nine months? It would be hard to believe that only a year before he competed in the Iron Man triathlon, Alwaleed Alkeaid was a self-professed couch potato. Growing up in Riyadh, Alkeaid was a hardcore online gamer, his thumbs had more exercise than him.

STUFF PHOTO/ MOHAMMED DEGHAISHM

For his post-graduate studies, Alkeaid was sent to Canada, where he would initially spend his time shifting from one degree to another. His life as a Saudi student was according to him, typical. Little did he know that one day, he would stumble across a video that would change his life. It was about the Hoyt team. A father and quadriplegic son who were joining races, including the Iron Man triathlon together. The father would swim, bike and cycle while pulling or carrying his son.

DESTINATIONRYD.COM 27

For the first time in his life, Alkeaid found himself fuelled with passion. At first, his goal was to finish a marathon then maybe in 3 to 5 years, be fit enough to compete in the Iron Man race but in a way, the universe convinced him to start a lot earlier than expected. “One of the things I thought of to jumpstart my road to Iron Man was to get better at running. At that time, I was enrolled in a health class and one of our projects for the semester was to run at least 10 kilometers by the end of the course. I went to my instructor and told her I wanted to run 21 kilometers and do a marathon. And her reply to me was, ‘you can’t do it.’” Being told that he can’t triggered Alkeaid. He started to extensively research, not just on how to finish a marathon but rather, on how to conquer Iron Man in the shortest time possible. He said, “Okay, granted, I can’t finish a lap in the pool and don’t really know how to cycle but still, I decided I’ll take this 1 out of 100 chance and see where it takes me.” Alkeaid proceeded to make changes in his lifestyle that surprised not only his family and friends but also himself . 28 DESTINATION RIYADH NOVEMBER 2015

“I had to wake up at 5 a.m. everyday to either swim or run. I would go to class then train some more. My social life dropped to zero. Discipline was key and there are times when I just wanted to stay in bed and slack off. Those times, I would watch the Hoyt video again and again.”

Then the day of the race came. His family and friends all came to witness exactly what Alkeaid has been up to in the past months. First up was the swim. Open sea, fantastic weather. After finishing the 4-kilometer swim, Alkeaid was just glad to be out of the cold water. Next up was the cycling leg, he started confident and cheery but a few hours in, Alkeaid started to

feel pain throughout his body. Things just got real. “Six hours into the race, the weather turned into a cold mess. The harsh wind hit me head on, I could barely pedal. Eventually, I just stopped at the side of the road and sobbed. Focus, I told myself, my coach said this would happen and so I just slowed down, took a deep breath and carried on. You’d think the worst was done right? I thought so too. I was wrong.” By the time he got off his bike, Alkeaid was ecstatic; running is all that’s left now. It was the most important part for Alkeaid, not just

because it’s the last leg but also, he was running for the Disabled Children Association of Saudi Arabia. With only a few kilometers left, his legs all jelly and his will almost ready to break; one of his friends caught up with him and told him that his father was waiting for him and handed Alkeaid the Saudi flag. “You know the hardest part of the race? It’s not just the physical exhaustion but

psychological and emotional exhaustion you have to put yourself through. It’s great when you pass by the crowd and they’re cheering you on but for the most part it’s just you and the sight and sound of ambulances rushing to pick up a fellow athlete from the road.” When Alkeaid reached the finish line, he took a leap, something he had imagined himself doing for months leading up to the moment. He finished the race in 13 hours. Upon becoming Iron Man, Alkeaid followed it up by finishing the toughest marathon in the world, the 230-kilometer race in Italy. He also found his calling. He went on to finish a degree in sports sciences and accomplish multiple international fitness and health certifications.

COURTESY PHOTO

Today, Alkeaid is back in Riyadh. He is a professional fitness trainer and hopes to help as many fellow Riyadhis get fit and commit to healthy life changes.

If you want to change your life, if you want to achieve a goal - you don’t have to be great at it from the start, you just have to show up. Everything you want to happen, will happen for as long as you show up and put in the work. – Alwaleed Alkeaid ptwaleed

Five Saudi women, one goal: to build a health boutique that will inspire ladies in Riyadh to be fitter, stronger and better. By Jou Pabalate

Sara Almodaimigh, Reem Alkhayyal, Noura Almodaimigh, Riham Alawaji and Aljohara Almodaimigh were having lunch one sunny Riyadh afternoon when the idea to create a fitness boutique came about. The reason to their impromptu rhyme? Each of them gets a kick out of a good workout session.

“We were tired and bored of the traditional gym, we all had the same sentiments, we wanted to jumpstart a community of people looking at fitness as a lifestyle rather than a luxury.

It was fascinating to discover that as a family business, each of the founding members are actively pitching in their expertise to make their endeavor what it is today. Alkhayyal, described by the group as the Supermom, is detail-oriented and takes care of the Kids Programs. When it comes to giving credit to how beautiful their space is, praise goes to Alawaji, the architect and

While this may scare off some people but as Aljohara said, “There’s a misconception that CrossFit is very challenging and muscular, however, it’s not. It is constantly varied and workouts are constantly changing and can be altered to your fitness goals and and level. A Crossfit WOD (Workout of the Day) could range from a strength, endurance to purely cardio.” For those who are more on the holistic side of things, Kore is also the first fitness center in Riyadh to introduce Barre classes - a ballet inspired low impact fusion class that includes components of Pilates, yoga and orthopedic exercises.

(affiliated by Active IQ and Faster Academy in the UK), aimed at creating a league of highly qualified fitness trainers needed in the city. Kore is the first certified CrossFit box for women in Riyadh, an achievement the team attributes to Jill Calvert, their fitness manager. It’s a high intensity, high functional movement training program that

Kore stands out for being that health club for individuals who want to be part of a intimate and focused fitness community. It envelopes you with so much energy and positivity - which is exactly what the women had in mind while they were having lunch one day, not long ago, in the heart of Riyadh.

ALAA ABANOMI The yogi tells us more about her craft. By Johara Al Mogbel

Alaa Abanomi has always been intriguing. She’s a therapeutic hatha yoga teacher, wellbeing enthusiast and part of the Sukoun family, the city’s newest health studio.

I got into yoga lightly when I was studying university in the US around 2003. I became an avid practitioner when I was pregnant with my first child in 2006. I went in for the stretch and strength and came out with a lot more. I decided to continue my education in the healing art and science of yoga from then on.

32 DESTINATION RIYADH NOVEMBER 2015

What is yoga therapy about?

Yoga therapy aims to integrate traditional yoga methods and techniques with conventional Western medical treatments. Many different approaches to yoga therapy exist, but all share the fundamental understanding that integration of the mind, body, and spirit are essential to healing. For this reason, yoga therapy encompasses not only how we move our body

and the postures we do on our mats, but also, and of equal importance, is how we live and treat ourselves and others, off the mat. It aims to re-align the body both structurally and energetically, restore balance to the autonomic nervous system, deepen and regulate the breath, massage the internal organs, stretch the muscles, open the joints and the heart, and quiet the endless chatter of the mind.

STUFF PHOTO/ MOHAMMED DEGHAISHM

How did you get into yoga?

Yoga is not a magic pill that fixes everything, but it will surely give you some great tools to manage any pain or difficulties in your life.

Who would you recommend yoga therapy for?

I would recommend yoga therapy for those who need special attention (i.e. those with injuries, glandular issues, back or joint pain, those suffering with chronic stress, depression or anxiety). It is also very helpful for those who want to go deeper in their yoga practice.

What do you think is the biggest hurdle for Riyadhis when it comes to being healthy?

To be honest, the biggest hurdle people complain about is time, when in reality it’s not true at all. Practicing these two actually gives you time, clarity and focus that would enable you to live your life more effectively and efficiently. The other things are technology and social pressure. But I see this changing as there is a huge shift in awareness and people are becoming more conscious of their health and well-being and allocating more weight to them in their daily lives. When was the youth club founded?

In 1980 we founded the first football school in Saudi Arabia, and it had great success in player productivity and youth care.

Can you give an example of a regular training day for the team?

It depends. Weekly training sessions differ according to age. There are six different categories in the youth program, and the age is 9-14. From 9-11 years, they train about six hours a week and from 12-14 about 10 hours weekly.

What are the educational requirements for the players?

There aren’t certain educational requirements, but the football club does ask for midterm exam grades and the final results from the players as a regular follow up on their education, as well as reward the children with the highest marks. The club also provides health and game rule lectures, as well as general culture talks.

Are there any plans in set for the players’ future? What are the requirements to transition to the main team?

The youth players are considered amateur footballers at this stage. The club does provide transportation, as well as football kits. Also, the players get enrolled in the Medical Sports Hospital for check ups. As for the requirements, a player needs to bypass the different age groups, and his performance in those levels will be an indicator to whether or not he will be able to make it to the first team.

What do the players do to get in the club? Are they scouted or do they apply?

The club generally opens applications for new players, and eligibility depends on the apparent skills the child might display that we feel could be DESTINATIONRYD.COM 35

developed into something more. We also have scouts that collaborate with us on finding potential players, and we sometimes receive tips from P.E. teachers we’d previously collaborated with.

How do the players describe their experience of being in the club?

They love it, mostly because our players are huge fans of the sport and some of them, their dreams come true by getting chosen by the team.

What benefits or perks do the players receive by being a member of the youth Hilal team?

The care and interest of the club in the player by being a member, concentrated healthcare and educational follow ups, as well as awards the children might receive after matches.

Do the children ever get to meet the members of the main Hilal team?

Yes, they do. The members of the first team do follow up with the youth club, by visiting their matches to encourage the children. Also, the youth training sessions are right before the first team’s, which occasionally allows the children to observe the first team’s training. Web: alhilal.com

Riyadh’s Boxing for Fitness Trend

By Jou Pabalate

According to their trainer, “Boxing is a general body interval training which involves heart rate peaks and valleys which is proven to be the best for burning calories and reducing body fat. It is a good muscle toning and lean muscles optimization.”

Ahmed Khalil

Riyadhi rapper, singer, video editor and since 2013, amateur boxer.

Want to hit stuff and feel good about it? Boxing may just be the right workout for you.

Boxing has become a mainstream choice for health buffs looking for a total body workout. We sat down with the trainers of Fitness First to tell us a bit about the revival of boxing as a new training choice among health buffs in the city.

Moreover, a typical boxing routine targets multiple areas of fitness, it’s not just a matter of throwing punches. As the experts advised, “There is the right technique for the punches and the kicks which will be more on the practical side of the exercise

than the cardio side. It will include a variety of exercises to increase your stamina. Agility exercises are as important important to move with efficiency a wide selection of other exercises focusing on the general sides of the boxing.”

He joined a local gym and began training. Contrary to his “punch-punch-punch” belief, he quickly learned that boxing is a holistic sport that required speed, mental strategy and a whole lot of balance.

Khalil’s introduction to boxing came at a time when he was feeling down after being disqualified from Arabs Got Talent due to a technicality.

Khalil has competed in over 40 matches in the last two years. When asked what his most memorable fight is, he said, “I had a big fight that unfortunately was on the same day as my engagement. I won but I got a broken nose. I went to my wife’s family and her dad said, ‘Why do you think I will let you marry my daughter when you come here looking like that?”

His father saw him throwing out his frustration on a wall, and said, “If you are going to punch things, make it count. Do boxing.”

After getting married, Khalil took a back seat when it comes to boxing matches. His in-laws asked if he could veer away from fights. Khalil agreed but he continues to do his training, more as a form of staying fit rather than as a sport.

ARTIST’S CORNER MEET THIS MONTH’S EMERGING ARTIST! By Johara Al Mogbel

Is your work the result of sudden inspiration, or long term planning? I tend to go through an intensive phase of experimenting and studying a certain subject. For example, the works that were recently shown, Epidermis, were a result of a 3-month study of the human behavior. 40 DESTINATION RIYADH NOVEMBER 2015

NAME: Wa'ad Al Mujalli AGE: 25 OCCUPATION: Interior

Designer MEDIUM: CGI While doing so, I experimented with different approaches, tools, and had to put myself in different scenarios. I recorded a diary,

personal thoughts and notable behaviors from the second I open my eyes tillI fall asleep again. Sometimes I’d record voice notes, sometimes I note them down, whatever was convenient. Notes varied from dreams,to conversations, to how I act and feel regarding past and present incidents.

What do you think of the art scene in Riyadh? The art scene in Riyadh has been this complicated mixture of a pleasant yet heart aching kind of situation. We get to see a lot of talent, beauty and amazing handwork but rarely an art piece that has a soul, an art piece that can reach you the second you look at it. I think this is mostly what the art scene in Riyadh lacks, a soul. What does being creative mean to you? To be a child again. Favorite piece of artwork by someone else. Bruder Klaus Field Chapel, Peter Zumthor. It’s not the usual “artwork” kind of creation, but Zumthor tends to reach deep down into the human mind and feelings through his designs. wvxii

Why do you art? I think it’s a natural urge every human being has, to create things and make parts of their experiences come to life. Sometimes we fail to express ourselves through words or introduce a certain idea. So we seek to find certain tools and methods, other than words, to express our thoughts, or simply bring them to life.

FASHION AND BALLET:

WHEN TWO WORLDS COLLIDE How they inspire each other. By Felwa Alhudaithy

Ballet fitness is still a growing trend. Since the very beginning of ballet, the dance form has both inspired and been inspired by high fashion. There seems to be a never-ending dance between both worlds, both influencing one another throughout the centuries. 46 DESTINATION RIYADH NOVEMBER 2015

Ballet’s ethereal quality is an appealing trait to fashion designers. The sense of beauty and sophistication it bestows cannot be denied. 48 DESTINATION RIYADH NOVEMBER 2015

Being inspired by women around her, Fatima Batook (Saudi fitness instructor and business woman) created the brand Tima. We had the pleasure of talking to her about the growing awareness of health and fitness amongst women in Saudi and her newest fitness venture, Studio 55.

COURTESY PHOTO

A FASHION FOR FITNESS

You have a strong presence on social media. How are you using it to empower women? It helps us reach out to all types of women who are searching for fitness tips, healthy recipes or even products. Social media is a great platform for us to promote our brand, share our values and inspire women all over.

What are the Tima brand values?

Well, there are five different values we always talk about. Motivation, self-love (emotionally, mentally and physically), determination, strength (and positive energy) and finally, to love life and embrace all its ups and downs. tima_love_life

Your biggest difficulty when launching Tima was people pre-judging the brand. How has that changed lately?

People are definitely becoming more aware. I see more women, especially the younger generation, increasingly being interested in exercise and fitness. People understand that I’m creating something that I know I could wear and be comfortable in while working out; it gives the end product more credibility.

Can you tell us more about Studio 55?

Studio55, based in Khobar,

is a new concept of women health club in Saudi where we focus on small group training with two studios under one roof. We have a spinning studio and another functional training studio.

What advice do you have for young fitness enthusiasts in Saudi who want to pursue a career in fitness?

I’d say the number one thing is go to an entity where you can pick the knowledge and certification to be able to perform the safety of teaching fitness. That’s the first step, to be certified. DESTINATIONRYD.COM 49

BURGER 777 By Faris Alyahya

It was late at night, I was super hungry and craving Chicken Santa Fe from Hardee’s. The closest one was on Abdulaziz road. But once I arrived there I saw a familiar glow next to it, a sign that said Burger 777. I haven't been there in a while. We called it Sevens Burger as I remember. I noticed they tweaked their logo a bit. It's initially the same but looks brighter and it gave me an indication that they're doing well with their business so I went in. The place was simple, clean, comforting and welcoming. I remembered their patties were thin, so I asked for a double cheeseburger with everything on it. They call it the Sharly Burger. I immediately noticed how organized and well prepared the workers are. And they had a burger bun toaster! They also add the cheese on top while on the grill so it can melt before they transfer it to the bun. Opened way back in

Myth

Our focus is to turn the light on these hard-held beliefs on fitness, training, and health and to shed away the misconceptions that, despite the wealth of knowledge in the wellness industry, still exist today.

Truth

Burning calories is the result of work. The harder you work, the Sweating is a more calories you burn. More effort sign of calorie increases your heart rate and your breathing. That’s how you know burn. More you’re working hard. is better. Sweat results from an increase in your body’s temperature. It cools your body. The rise in your body’s temperature can be from the effort you’re making. But it can also be from the clothes you’re wearing, to the room temperature, and even to stress. Sweat results in loss of water from the body. That’s usually why you weigh less immediately after an intense session. This water weight is gained back as soon as you drink some liquid.

Conclusion

Sweat can be the result of many other factors. But only effort results in calorie burn. And to shape up, it essentially depends on these two factors most: effort and nutrition.

SPIRITUALITY

SPORTING the Sunnah Way

Sports the Prophet (PBUH) enjoyed. By Aabiya Baqai

An advocate for fitness and health, the Prophet (PBUH) was a keen athlete who enjoyed playing certain sports that helped with his physical, social and spiritual wellbeing.

Let’s have a look at a few of Prophet’s favorite games and their advantages. Archery

The Prophet (PBUH) once passed by some people of the tribe of Bani Aslam who were practicing archery. The Prophet (PBUH) said:“O Bani Isma`il! Practice archery as your father Isma`il was a great archer. Keep on throwing arrows and I am with Bani so-and-so.” [Bukhari]

Archery is basically the use of bows to propel arrows at a certain speed to a specific target. It’s a great way to gain mental focus and detail eye hand coordination. One of the biggest advantages is the development of upper body strength as the archer is required to hold the arrow at a certain angle on the bow to be able to hit the target on point. 70 DESTINATION RIYADH NOVEMBER 2015

Swimming

It is reported that the Prophet (PBUH) used to swim as a child when his mother visited his maternal uncles in Madinah. It is also reported that the Prophet (PBUH) swam in the well of Bani ‘Ady ibn Al Najjar. He also once swam with some of his Companions in a stream. Swimming is one of those sports that helps with the growth and fitness of the entire body. It strengthens the body and helps with cardiorespiratory (heart and lungs) fitness as well as building good muscle mass.

Horseback Riding

“And [He created] the horses, mules and donkeys for you to ride and [as] adornment. And He creates that which you do not know.” [Qur’an: Chapter 16, Verse 8]

The Prophet (PBUH) said, “Everything with which a man amuses himself is vain except three (things): a man’s training of his horse, his playing with his wife and his shooting with his bow and arrow.” [Abu Dawud]

Both the Qur’an and Sunnah have many mentions of horses and the purpose for which they have been created.

Used as a means of transport during battle in the past, horseback riding has been known to positively affect the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual wellbeing of a person. It helps in liver functioning and digestion. It also helps in acquiring balance and muscle mass especially in legs and arms. DESTINATIONRYD.COM 71

The hours after fajr are among the most blessed of the day. Starting the day off with morning prayers sets you in the right frame of mind throughout the day. Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said about the Prophet (PBUH): “He used to sleep early at night, and get up in its last part to

A positive mind and attitude are irreplaceable in the quest to be productive and achieve your goals in life. Smiling is a simple, inexpensive act that helps lift your mood and our Prophet was seen frequently doing it.

Abu Hurairah narrated that Allah’s Messenger said: “If it were not that it would be difficult on my nation, then I would have ordered them to use the siwak for each prayer.” [Tirmidhi]

It is narrated that the Prophet (PBUH) would use siwak upon waking.

4. Oiling hair

[Ibn Majah]

[An-Nasa’i]

Your level of food consumption should not leave you feeling tired or bloated as this is a state that leads to laziness, which is a vice we seek refuge in Allah from.

“I heard Jabir bin Samurah being asked about the grey hairs of the Prophet. He said: ‘If he put oil on his head they could not be seen, but if he did not put oil on his head, they could be seen.”

Allah say: ‘A human being fills no worse vessel than his stomach. It is sufficient for a human being to eat a few mouthfuls to keep his spine straight. But if he must (fill it), then one third of food, one third for drink and one third for air.”

This hadith alludes to the idea of using oil to prevent grey hairs being visible, highlighting that the sunnah of the Prophet (PBUH) encompasses every aspect of life.

6. Speaking Good or Keeping Silent

The Prophet (PBUH) said: “He who believes in Allah and the Hereafter, if he witnesses any matter he should talk in good terms about it or keep quiet.” [Muslim]

When speaking ill of a person or situation, the conversation becomes elongated, sadly due to the desire to gossip. DISCOVER BALI Beyond stunning sunsets and shimmering seas, Fields Bali’s island culture beguiles theRicespirit. By Elizabeth Davis and Sahrish Ali

Meaning ‘gift’ in ancient Sanskrit, Bali conjures images of cloud-haloed jungles, sugary-sand rimmed beaches and blue lagoons. In spite of over 2 million tourists visiting the island each year, the Balinese have managed to preserve their language, customs and cultural history. Ubud, deemed the island’s spiritual heart, enchants visitors with its mountain vistas, surreal absinthe-shaded terraces and mellow, bohemian vibe. The downtown area beckons the Birkenstock sandal wearing, chia-seed eating crowds with an abundance of yoga retreats, energy healers and spas. Fantastic batik cotton dresses and sarongs are plentiful here and for those looking for a unique gift, be sure to visit Prapen Jewelry and Artifacts. The high-end boutique features fine jewelry made from assortment of locally sourced sea pearls, silver and gemstones. 76 DESTINATION RIYADH NOVEMBER 2015

Jungle Fish

The Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary

Bali has a selection of waterfalls that are fun to visit. For many people the idea of hiking through the jungle to a hidden waterfall and taking a cooling swim is the image of paradise. Everything is preserved and rustic in nature. There are man made steps and bridges made of tree trunks. Locals charge small fees to maintain the reserves.

Bali Waterfalls

Once done exploring the waterfalls and natural landscape of Ubud, be sure to book some time at the renowned Bali Zoo where animals’ comfort is paramount. You can have a ride with the jolly elephants as well on a wellworn path scattered with orchids throughout.

Pause to enjoy the peaceful sounds of the jungle and let your eyes exalt in the fecund waves of green. A popular downtown Ubud destination, the Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary, is home to over 600 macaques monkeys and although it can be crowded, early morning visitors may find a quiet shady corner of the sanctuary to watch marauding troops forage for bananas. To fully appreciate Udud’s pastoral charm, take a guided tour, ride out on a solo scooter adventure or enjoy a bicycle tour of the villages and rice paddies outside the city.

Across from the main entrance, the forest’s office accepts donations for a scheme to offset the carbon you created getting to Bali. Get a tree planted for 150,000 Rp.

Elephant Cave is an archaeological site of significant historical value that makes it a special place to visit. Located on the cool western edge of Bedulu Village, six kilometers out of central Ubud, you do not need more than an hour to descend to its relic-filled courtyard and view the rock-wall carvings, a central meditational cave, bathing pools and fountains. DESTINATIONRYD.COM 77

Bali is known for its fine Luwak coffee. Ask for a coffee and tea tasting while exploring this gem of a place.

After all your excursions you are bound to be famished, and what better place to dine than Jungle Fish, where you are greeted with smiles and homey comfort. They offer a fusion of Mediterranean cuisine. The spa is just the cherry on top. It overlooks the hill on top of which Jungle Fish is situated. Many people visit Bali in search for answers, spiritual healing, balance or just plain relaxation. If you read the book (or saw the movie) “Eat Pray Love” then you know about Ketut Liyer, the Balinese Healer who predicted Elizabeth Gilbert’s future. Almost everyone in Ubud says Cokorda Rai (pronounced Chokorda Rye), is the healer to see. He’s not a palm reader and he doesn’t exclusively do psychic work. His technique seems like a combination of Reiki with acupressure with his unique diagnostic method. He spends about 10-15 minutes per client. For those looking for a little zen to their adventure, The Yoga Barn is recommended. It was founded for the sole purpose of bringing together community and giving back to the island of Bali. 78 DESTINATION RIYADH NOVEMBER 2015

Although Ubud has a reputation as a place of relaxation, there are actually a number of activities on offer for thrill seekers. Picture three miniscule desert islands, fringed by white-sand beaches and coconut palms, sitting in a turquoise sea: the Gilis are a vision of paradise. These islets have exploded in popularity, and are booming like nowhere else in Indonesia – speedboats now zip visitors direct from Bali and a hip new hotel opens practically every month.

It’s not hard to understand the Gilis' unique appeal, for serenity endures (no motorbikes or dogs!) and a green consciousness is growing. Development has been more tasteful than rapacious and there are few concrete eyesores. Each island has its own special character. Trawangan (universally known as Gili T) is by far the most cosmopolitan, its bar and party scene vibrant and its accommodation and restaurants close to definitive tropical chic. Gili Air has the strongest local character, but also a perfect mix of buzz and languor. Meno is simply a desert-island getaway.

If you’re looking for first class family fun along with luxury then Fairmont is for you. Fairmont Sanur Beach is an allsuite-and-villa resort set amidst lush tropical gardens. The property is perfect for guests looking for a haven to relax and unwind. Personalized around-the-clock butler service is available to all guests. Both intuitive and discreet, the ever-attentive butlers are ready to fulfill any request from organizing car rentals to planning day excursion trips and making restaurant reservations. Fairmont Sanur Beach Bali serves delectable international cuisine at the delightfully informal yet refined Nyala Beach Club and Grill. Authentic Indonesian and panAsian cuisines are available, while The Pool Terrace alongside the main swimming pool affords guests spectacular sea views. A full service spa lies at the center of the resort. Luxury accommodation comes in the form of 94 garden and ocean view suites. Each suite boasts an outdoor terrace fitted with an oversized daybed on which guests can while the hours away. Sunsets are Bali’s truest art form. As if gently dipped in

Gauguin’s Polynesian palette, honest hues of vermillion seep into a gold and lavender glow when the day slips away into the Indian Ocean. Some of the best sunset memories are made at the island’s most southern beaches, most notably Dreamland and Balangan, where at dusk the sea’s glittering curls are dusted with surfers catching their last ride of the day. With direct flights from Jeddah to Kuala Lumpur and connecting to Denpasar, getting to Bali from the Kingdom is easy and affordable.

World Sights Park Also dubbed as the Landmark park of Riyadh, World Sights is an ideal weekend field trip for families – and lovers of selfies. By Jou Pabalate

Located along the Eastern Ring Road and just across Al Hokair Amusement park, is the latest go to place for families in the city. The World Sights park is an initiative of the Arriyadh development authority and features different miniature monuments from around the world.

Don’t expect a huge land area to discover, a walk through the park would take you around 30 minutes tops including the photo taking moments.

The entrance fee is SR 10 for adults and children go in for free.

80 DESTINATION RIYADH NOVEMBER 2015

World Sights Park opens from 5 p.m., Wednesday to Sunday for families and women and Tuesdays are for men only. The park is closed on Mondays for maintenance. We would recommend going a bit earlier than 8 p.m.

We’re happy to note that you can bring food in and have a picnic. We saw families enjoying their night just lazying about on the grass. There are snack carts and vendors on site as well if you’re looking to munch on something.

The park is well-maintained, there’s security guards in key areas to ensure that the miniatures are viewed but not touched. The surroundings are clean and you’d feel safe to let your children play at the the playground.

The only issue we had with the latter is the lack of lighting, hopefully that’s resolved soon.

If you want less photobombers in your shots, as the crowd does get thick beyond this time.

Over all, the World Sights Park is another checkbox in your list of go to places in Riyadh. And if you do decide to visit, don’t forget to bring your selfie stick.

trees on my travels around the Kingdom that for once didn’t happen to be palm trees. When we were close to the site we noticed that the trees abruptly ended. Following which was an open pan of desert encircled by mountains and trees, in the center of which stood this semi-sedentary site. These huge stone stelae were erected for cultural purposes and are believed to represent the deceased, however no burials are found at this site. Rajajeel is an important ceremonial site with about 50 groups of vertical standing

stone columns some of which are up to 3.5 meters high and are believed by some to be around 6,000 years old. At the site, groups of four or five stone pillars stand on precise distances forming a semicircle. What we found interesting was that one set of stone columns wasn’t in the semicircle. That particular set of pillars stood solitary a few meters away, almost as if it overlooks the others from afar. We drove around the ruins; ours was the only car there at that time. Even the museum adjacent to the historical site was closed by then.

A colleague of mine suggested we go see Rajajeel, some 10 kilometers out of the city. Once on the road to Rajajeel we were flanked on both sides by towering coniferous trees. I was actually surprised by their sheer size, it was the first time I saw such soaring DESTINATIONRYD.COM 83

We noticed that some of them carried primitive rock art on them. Many pillars were leaning at horrifying angles instead of the upright positions they were originally meant to stand at. Some groups of pillars however, were broken. Whether it was due to weathering or human vandalism, we couldn’t tell. Even when they stood together they were not all of the same height.

But the question that I was left with after visiting the place was how were these pillars made? They obviously were cut from rock, but what were the tools they used and how were they transported here?
