This month is that time of the year when the fashion circus rolls into town. No other month causes a louder buzz among style insiders, designers and shoppers, all eagerly waiting to find out what will separate the sartorialists from the fashion victims of the world. In recent years, the region has moved beyond being a mere spectator of the international fashion scene. Our rich culture has become a well of inspiration for designers and tastemakers the world over. And this realization is what drove us to create a special edition that celebrates style as an extension of our identity. Awaken your cultural pride with our special report on the threads and traditions that have swept the world with a Khaleeji cool breeze. Be in the latest know of trends by following our list of style forward instagrammers. We invite you to get up close and personal with Saudi Arabia’s self-made star, Mohammed Ashi, the fashion designer who started his journey as an apprentice for Elie Saab and has now gained the nod of industry icons with his very own label, ASHI. At Destination we try to uncover insightful stories that will leave you informed and inspired to make a difference. We sat down with Shahd Al Shehail, Saudi social entrepreneur and founder of JUST, an enterprise whose efforts are echoing across continents, calling for a more ethical and sustainable fashion industry.

Thumbs down to Pocketing Tips

The editors of Destination are always keen to appreciate good service. We’ve always encouraged readers to extend a little extra gratuity for wait staff who go an extra mile to give you an impeccable dining experience. So imagine our dismay when we encountered waiters who pocket the tips we’ve left for their colleagues.

Seriously guys, habits like this have a ripple effect - the waiter who did serve us would feel his service isn’t getting rewarded, others would mimic the practice and to top it off, it’s downright stealing. Instead of investing your energy in taking what isn’t yours, why not focus on doing better at your job?

Saudi Delegates Rocked at the Special Olympics World Games 2015 We wanted to do backflips when this item hit our hot desk. The Special Olympics Saudi athletes managed to get 15 medals at the recently concluded World Games 2015 held in LA. If that’s not enough, these awesome

lads did a back-to-back win in the pool. Abdulrahman Al Yafei takes home the gold, while Faisal Al Qusaibi gets to bag the silver for the 25-meter backstroke swimming competition.

Souq Okaz, the Best Event of Them All What if we told you Taif had a cool cultural event? And what if we told you it was, from all accounts, possibly the coolest event in Saudi Arabia so far? We know. We wouldn’t believe it either. But it turns out that Souq Okaz has retained its awesomeness from the days when it was the main Arabian hub for long-ago poets.

Once a main trading center 12 centuries ago, it was one of the areas that shaped literature and culture. So with historical reenactments, traditional Saudi product displays and fun plays, we’d easily say it outbeats Janadriah in the fun factor. Well done, Souq Okaz! We’re quite filled with pride.

BUSINESS

HERE ARE A FEW TIPS • Maintain a separate bank account. Joint account is not recommended for all married couples. They are designed for some certain purposes. • Keep your banking information confidential. • Never issue an unlimited POA to your husband or other family member.

FINANCIAL PLANNING WITH REEM ASAAD Financially Abused? What is financial abuse and are you a victim? According to womenslaw.org, it is the practice of “making or attempting to make a person financially dependent.” It is also the practice of coercing your partner into choices that would otherwise not be made. Examples of financial abuse include maintaining total control on financial resources in a household (or a personal relationship), withholding access to money, credit or identity theft, or job coercion. In Arabia especially, we rarely discuss this problem openly since it has familial stigma attached to it. Not uncommonly, financial abuse sneaks into the relationship and sometimes ends in painful breakups or more dire consequences

14 DESTINATION RIYADH SEPTEMBER 2015

like imprisonment (in extreme cases). In my career I have witnessed women coerced into personal loans for their husbands who are either unable to repay it or deny their personal involvement in the matter. In other cases, women are chosen in marriage for their job. In fact, today a question about a woman’s salary and earnings can arise when marriage is proposed. Clearly, life has become more expensive and the single income household is no longer a sustainable model for modern family, but abuse should notbe tolerated. In many of these cases, the abuser has access to the financial and identity information of the “abused.”

• Do NOT obtain a personal loan for anyone else unless it is a very trusted relative or friend. Be prepared that you may not get repaid. Legally, you are the only liable person in this transaction. • When contributing to family expenses, keep a record of amounts and dates. • Do not discuss your pay or finances casually among friends and family members. JUST

Believing in fair tales. By Jou Pabalate Shahd AlShehail Founder of JUST social entreprise

Everyone has a story, so does every thing. Behind the clothes on your back are narratives often left untold. The reality is, beyond the salesman or cashier who hands you a bag of your latest purchase; every other person who has toiled and sown the garments has become invisible.

data and storytelling to engage and empower shoppers to make ethical choices that would eventually impact sustainable change in the global fashion industry.

This is what Shahd AlShehail and co-founder Natalie Grillon were coming from when they created JUST, a social enterprise that uses design,

Saudi social entrepreneur, Shahd AlShehaili ticks all the boxes for what writers would consider a gold star feature. She earned an MBA from John Hopkins, left a possibly

lucrative career to go out into the world and try to change it. She was the first woman from the Arab world to become a global fellow for the Acumen Fund, which by the way had a selection process that produced 10 to 12 fellows out of thousands who apply annually. AlShehaili started her journey into social entrepreneurship when she was about to finish

It was this pivotal moment that pushed AlShehaili to apply for the global Acumen Fellowship. Through Acumen, AlShehaili got to know Grillon. The latter would visit her in India where they would trade experiences that would eventually give birth to what is now, project JUST. “Natalie was working with an organic cotton company in northern Uganda and she told me this beautiful story of impact, of how engagement in organic farming and fair trade has given the farmers better wages, better lives, and basically lifted the community up from poverty during what is, ultimately, a post civil war. And in the end, it got us wondering, wouldn’t shoppers want to know about this?” A few weeks later, Rana Plaza, a building that housed multiple garment factories in Bangladesh collapsed. The tragedy took the lives of 1,129 people. The devastating death toll could have easily been avoided if workers weren’t ordered to come in after the building was declared unsafe for people. Ethical fashion leads to happy lives.

her MBA from John Hopkins, Maryland. Towards the end of her program, AlShehaili went to Rwanda where she would come face to face for the first time with the challenges of impacting change. It was an episode of selfdoubt that led her to read “Blue Sweater,” a memoir by the Global Acumen founder, Jacqueline Novagratz. It would

ignite her spirit to forge on in making a difference regardless of how muddled it can be along the way. “One of the important lessons that I keep coming back to from the book was that in doing our work to alleviate poverty; one must have the humility to see the world for what it really is and the audacity to imagine it (the world), as it should be.”

This incident really served as a wake up call for AlShehaili, who recalled,

“It got down to something as simple as, here I am, sitting in India, doing my work to supposedly help alleviate poverty, wherein fact; the very shirt on my back can very well be made of injustice. It just didn’t make sense.” A year and a half since its establishment, JUST has DESTINATIONRYD.COM 19

already made great strides in its mission to empower consumers by using technology to communicate stories and data that will help them make informed and conscious choices.

AlShehaili worked in India as a Global Fellow, where she and Grillon first came up with the idea of JUST.

20 DESTINATION RIYADH SEPTEMBER 2015

For this, AlShehaili shared some exciting news:“Very soon, we will be launching a mobile application that will give shoppers the ability to scan a label, which will give them insight of the brand’s practices and from there, they can choose whether they will support it based on the information presented to them. The app will also give them resources and alternatives, channeling them towards more ethical brands in the market.”

COURTESY PHOTO/CREATIVEMORNINGS.COM • PROJECTJUST.COM

So how does technology factor in the storytelling mechanism of JUST?

On top of empowering consumers, AlShehaili and Grillon are also helping brands who are making an effort to adopt and implement an ethical and sustainable business model by providing them a platform to tell their story. Fashion is a 3 trilliondollar industry, out of it only 2 percent is reportedly considered ethical. In a way, JUST is doing what they can to show why this minority deserves to be the new majority in the future. One of the systems currently being developed by JUST is a database that allows fashion labels to upload their supplier data, making room for transparency. They also plan to create a system that would collect real time, unfiltered feedback from garment producers and workers themselves. The founders of JUST are not buried in blind idealism, however, as an ecosystem overhaul cannot and will not happen overnight. Neither will their method be the sole silver bullet to solve the maladies of supply chains. “At the end of the day, you’re looking at a multi-stakeholder effort. And this requires looking at what would make these players sit on the table to begin with. Fast fashion companies for example, won’t necessarily listen to policy makers and wiggle their way through weak government channels to tap into scrupulous suppliers who would produce the most at the lowest cost. But, they will

A true storyteller, AlShehaili shares her experiences as a social entrepreneur and the importance of humility during one of the Creative Mornings in Dubai.

listen to where the money is coming from- the consumers of their product.” As AlShehaili puts it, there is a lot of potential in having Saudi society, which has inherent cultural and religious values grounded on justice, spark an ethical fashion movement. Some people might still be skeptical as to how their innovative approach can actually be sustainable on a larger scale. Fast fashion for now, is accessible, affordable and convenient. It fits the whole mass consumerist

culture of purchase now, think later. To be honest, AlShehaili’s passion is contagious. She is truly a storyteller whose thoughts dig deep into your consciousness, making it run long after the conversation has ended. The problem of ethical fashion is complex. Ignorance is bliss, so they say. The comfort of apathy is an apparent danger that will keep us from truly understanding that in choosing ourselves, we choose mankind. Web: projectjust.com

OUR CHAT WITH THE

VISIONARY MOHAMMED ASHI In a region where few designers achieve international critical acclaim, Mohammed Ashi led the pack as the first Saudi to attain success with his avant-garde approach to tailoring. By Felwa Alhudaithy

With nods from the likes of Anna Wintour, and an eye for making the most beautiful collections, we can safely say Ashi Studio is well on it’s way to solidifying its status as a renowned atelier alongside Oscar de la Renta and Dior, if it hadn’t already. We sat down with the visionary himself to see the human side of the studio.

Have you always had a passion for fashion?

I have been passionate about art, design and drawing since I was 5 years old and I attended my first fashion show when I was 12. I started working on my silhouette and style of Ashi studio since fashion school. I was obsessed with creating a silhouette with a modern touch but was influenced by the old schools of couture such as Charles F Worth. I always enjoyed the cutting and tailoring process and the details involved in it. So I already had everything in mind set for my first collection due to previous experimental experiences and the influence of old couture houses.

What did you study and did it help you as a designer?

I studied Fashion Design at the prestigious fashion school, Esmod International. Surely my school enhanced my techniques and my vision for design. My biggest challenge was to create a silhouette that became an Ashi Studio Signature, which is recognized today by our clients worldwide. 22 DESTINATION RIYADH SEPTEMBER 2015

Do you have a muse while you design? A perfect idea of a woman perhaps, a historical figure or even a socialite?

My muse is the Duchess of Windsor Wallis Simpson because she was an icon of fashion and elegance. I admire her strength and the way she fought for her rights. My client is an avant-garde sophisticated woman who likes to stand out and is looking for a glamorous and timeless look. She is an haute couture client.

What’s your inspiration and why aren’t you based in Riyadh or Jeddah? Why do you consider Beirut as your spiritual home and would you ever consider relocating to any other Arab country? What do you want Ashi Studio to be known for, five years from now?

I want Ashi Studio to be renowned internationally and to open more stores worldwide and expand the brand to cover all continents.

Do you think that your fame, internationally, established your status nationally?

The key of fame to any designer is the credibility gained from international press. Being featured in Vogue Italia and chosen as the only Arab designer at the Vogue/ San Pellegrino event gave Ashi Studio a lot of credibility and credit in the fashion industry.

My inspiration comes from art, movies, music and architecture. I am very much inspired by the age of couture (1940-1950s), which was the era of glamor and elegance. I am not based in Saudi because unfortunately the country does not have the right production platform for such a field. We cannot find the right craftsmanship like the one available in Beirut. In Beirut they have the right fashion production platform that facilitates the creation of couture. For the moment, we have no plans to relocate the atelier. We have several points of sale in the major high end stores in big Middle Eastern cities such as Dubai, Kuwait, DESTINATIONRYD.COM 23

Qatar and we also sell in London. In Saudi Arabia, the business of fashion has not matured enough to start building an empire of couturiers and pret-a-porter designers.

What do you collect and why?

I am a big art collector. I collect mainly paintings from all over the world because I believe that art works have a lifetime value. The older it gets the more valuable it becomes.

What’s your detox?

Traveling and exploring other cultures and norms.

What is elegance to you?

Elegance to me is attitude. I’ve always admired women who know how to carry themselves in public, who are confident and know what they want.

What do you do to keep your soul up to date?

I am constantly keeping myself updated by reading history, researching, listening to music, visiting museums and historical landmarks around the world. I always seek cultural activities wherever I go.

What’s the best advice you’ve received that has kept you going and growing?

The best advice was given to me by Linda Fargo, Senior Vice President, Women’s Fashion Director and Store Presentation at Bergdorf Goodman). She advised me to keep my emotions in the aesthetic designs but with a modern twist. This was a key to Ashi studio’s success. Web: ashistudio.com

THE SAUDI FASHION MOVEMENT Why slow and steady wins the race.

The fashion scene in Riyadh is on a sleeping haze to say the least. There seems to be several trials to revive it, yet it will take a village to do so. From Riyadh Fashion Days to Jawahir to Harvey Nichols to the obscure one-off certified ‘stylist’ no one knows about except, of course, her closest friends… Such movements might have their hearts in the right place, however; the lack of support from fashion editors of leading magazines in the Gulf makes it hard to take them seriously. 26 DESTINATION RIYADH SEPTEMBER 2015

Finding talents might be easy but nourishing them is the problem. It takes time and money, and lots of guidance. I hate to be a pessimist here, but I will for the sake of argument. We have up-and-coming designers who have been given ‘chances’ to shine all over the GCC as well as worldwide.

But what will always be our Achilles heel is that these creators only think of the design without giving tailoring and quality a second look. We need to look closely at the pieces being manufactured and inspect every garment to ensure it being tailored to a minimum. every cut, sequins, and zipper should look like.

If we read on huge designers we’d discover that tailoring was essential to almost all of them. If you have been lucky enough to visit Savage Beauty, Alexander McQueen’s exhibition in London, you’d be flabbergasted at his impeccable execution of every piece.

Even his 1992 Graduation collection entitled “Jack the Ripper Stalks His Victims," (what a name and concept), was a sight. It’s as if he treated every garment as a living and breathing creature. Yes, young designers, the devil is in the details. He knows how

We have a lack of culturalism as a nation, we need to encourage our young to read more, read everything from history, politics, even poof nonsense pieces about today’s most talked about persona. We need fashion schools and workshops. We need people to know that fashion is not the new ‘cupcake’ industry. Our fashion scene might

That collection was so out of the norm that Isabella Blow, at the time Fashion Assistant to Michael Roberts (Fashion Director of Tatler and The Sunday Times), was attending the Graduation show at the Central St. Martin’s and was instantly struck by the beauty and craftsmanship of the clothing, and so she decided that she had to have it, and bought the

entire collection for 5,000 pounds. This was the beginning of a remarkable partnership and friendship. Isabella chose to pay Lee in installments each week, and would later provide him with the publicity that garnered him attention as the ‘enfant terrible’ of British fashion. We need our own Saudi Lee and Blow. Who will step up his/her game?

be in for a rude awakening, because at the end of the day, amateur bloggers and stylists that virtually had no training in leading companies or magazines can not resurrect our sleeping fashion industry, yet, if we all worked together to find real Saudi talents and nourished them, while making them work hard for it, only then will we find Nirvana. Sofia Alasfoor

From Bahrain, we have this luxury handbag line. Founded by Sofia Alasfoor and endorsed by the likes of the Overdressed, the handbags (dubbed Shields) have already cultivated a loyal following. Sofia herself has quite the background, having been taught and trained at London College of Fashion, Parsons New York and Istituto Europeo di Design. The bags are a wee bit overpriced, but if you want to carry a bespoke Arabic designed purse, this is it.

The Kayys

With so many purported clothing lines out there, it can get a little difficult to stand out. But The Kayys, a brand founded by three Qatari sisters, managed to shine with streamlined silhouettes and a wearable collection. The resort 2015 collection was a bit of a miss, but there’s no less than three looks in their spring/ summer collection that we would totally love to wear, and that doesn’t happen very often with us.

The Good Vibe

Being the silent country of the region, we aren’t that familiar with the Omani fashion scene. So imagine our pleasant surprise when we found out about The Good Vibe. An urban street culture brand, we love their no nonsense attitude and their galaxy print snapbacks, we won’t lie. And it’s unique to the peninsula, which we think is pretty cool. Their flagship store is in Qurum at the Masa Mall, for anyone interested. Here’s to them going global soon!

It was so hard to choose just one option from Kuwait. We don’t know what it is about the country that makes it happen, but there’s quite a number of businesses who’ve started out strong with branding, quality, and design. The one that caught our eye though was Liudmila. Founded by Najeeba Hayat and produced in Italy, we can safely say it is the only proper footwear business in the region. And we are so in love with the navy Leandra and the burgundy Baba in Bordeaux it’s not even funny. liudmilahq

The UAE was another tough one, excelling in jewelry and the like. One that stood out though was Shamsa Alabbar, a graphic designer who used her skills to make beautiful jewelry inspired by Arabic typography. THE Khaleeji Cool

Middle Eastern fashion goes mainstream. By Jou Pabalate

When our threads become a trend, it just gives us a little oomph of homegrown pride. Besides, it’s nice to see what other countries have picked up from us for a change. Without further ado…

Shemagh

This versatile scarf is one of our favorite essentials in the Saudi closet. How much love has it gotten from the industry? Oh let us count the ways! Hoodies, bags, shirts – name it and it has been done (Nike trainer jackets included). And most recently, the brand, Cecilie Copenhagen from Denmark launched the “Yellow 2015” collection.

It revolved around the shemagh reinterpreted as rompers, dresses and even belts. Interestingly, Karl Lagerfeld did an exclusive Middle Eastern inspired CHANEL Resort 2014, which had the shemagh front and center. If that’s not a nod approval for the region’s style offering, we don’t know what is.

Arabic

Arabic has become the coolest alphabet on upscale casual prints and accessories. KTZ (Kokon to Zai) and Kenzo were the first to bring it to a more mainstream casual level outside the region, and it just trended from there on.

30 DESTINATION RIYADH SEPTEMBER 2015

Kanye West, in his second appearance on this list, is known to wear his Arabic nameplate a lot too.

Bisht

Stephane Rolland created a Spring/Summer collection for 2015 inspired by the bisht, which got international acclaim when it debuted in PFW. The bisht further caught the interest of sartorial connoisseurs when Kanye West strolled the pavements of New York in a bisht inspired winter coat.

The bisht has been part of the Saudi culture since it was brought to the country by Persian vendors. It was originally used by Bedouins during winter but has now evolved as an essential formal wardrobe for special occasions.

And must we say it, the shemagh or keffiyeh has become a hipster staple. Worn as a scarf, it adds an accent to even the most basic of outfits.

Henna

Initial adaptation of henna in the western regions was in its use as a hair dye as early as the 1800’s. It went a lot more mainstream in the US during the 1950s when the then “I Love Lucy” star Lucilly Ball made the “Henna Rinse” a mainstream beauty practice in households. Today, you have Rihanna and Beyoncé pulling off their own version of henna tats. While henna originated from our Asian and far eastern counterparts, it has become embedded in the Khaleeji culture as well.

What’s Next? We thought this deserved a special mention: Shaweesh, the Saudi artist of graffiti fame, wore a cool shalky bomber jacket during the Shubbak Festival 2015 in London. We won’t be surprised if we’ll be seeing a lot of our grandmothers’ jalabiya prints making an appearance in the global scene soon.

Oud

The oud scent may now vary but it has a distinct Arab character to it that is both intense as it is sophisticated. The oud has made such a bold statement in the world of perfumery to the point wherein niche fragrances have been crafted around it.

The scent of oud holds a level of prestige in the Arab peninsula. It was brought to the region by Islamic preachers who discovered its wood form use as incense during their expeditions to the far east.

WOOD SHEIKH Thinking outside the box. By Johara Al Mogbel

My name is Saud Al Hashil but my nickname is Odie. I’m assuming you're about to ask "why Odie?" Well, I'm still wondering why my family decided to call me the name of a dog in a cartoon. I think it was my aunt who suggested it because people in England struggled with pronouncing my real name.

I've been to Thailand, Tunisia, France, Spain, Portugal and a few Gulf countries. I'm well overdue a holiday; Maldives is probably my dream destination if anyone would like to take me?

Why the Wood Sheikh?

I'm proud of my heritage, and proud of my work – it just sounded right. DOWNLOAD • DISCOVER • INTERACT

STAFF PHOTO / NAWAF AL FARRAJ

I was born in England on December 6, 1988 (26 years young). I was born and raised in Torquay, a small but beautiful seaside town in Devon, England. I studied business and marketing at South Devon College, I'm still not sure how I passed. I don't have a day job, this business gets 24/7 out of me but it's cool, I love doing what I do.

How would you describe your own personal sense of style?

I'm a big believer in "less is more" so my style is simple. The coolest style for me would be a comfortably fitted plain black/white T-shirt with some jeans. However, a crazy pair of shoes would perfect that style for me, oh and maybe a fancy watch as well, although I'm not that into accessories.

How did you come up with the idea of the boxes? By thinking outside the box.

Any role models or inspirations?

My big brother, Saeed. He's my life teacher and he's quite cool, a good human too. Ok, let's not inflate his ego any more as he'll probably read this.

Any plans for expansion? What's your next step?

Well right now I am mainly focusing on bespoke pieces. I've learnt that customers really want to express their personalities within some of the pieces. For me that's really where my passion comes to life - when someone asks for a box that has glitter inside; then I know I'm going to have fun! I'd really like to have a retail store with many other products, I really want people to see and feel my work in real life. I've had a lot of admiration on social media, but the comments from the customers when they receive their boxes is much more rewarding, I really try to exceed their expectations.

What's your work process? Do you have anyone to help you out? My work process involves Drake, coffee, jogging pants and Kinder Bueno. Now that the workload has increased I have a very talented team to support me, but they all know the Kinder Buenos are off limits.

WE’RE CURIOUS.. WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE PAIR OF SHOES? Giuseppe Zanotti all day long! I think he won me over when he released a pair of shoes with gold crocodiles on them. How could I say no?

What inspires me... that moment when someone receives something you made from scratch and says "OMG I LOVE IT.” That right there inspires me! I love the journey and excitement of bringing something to life, all that hard work and effort and then watching someone enjoy it – that's priceless.

Shipping is horrible at the best of times, and custom painted wooden boxes seem like a pain to send off. How do you work around that?

Very well phrased, I could go further but I would like this to be published. To sum up delivery, I once personally drove to Dubai to deliver a box - it was an anniversary gift and the customer was following up for four weeks almost every other day. I realized it wasn't going to get there on time, so DESTINATIONRYD.COM 33

I did the honorable thing and took an 11-hour road trip. Each country has its challenges, but my aim is to always make the customers happy sometimes I will personally deliver boxes - just like taking your child to school on their first day, you just want them to arrive safely.

Where do you get the most customers from?

I have had so many order requests from around the world, mainly US and UK, but I'm currently focusing on GCC, so most orders are from Saudi, Kuwait, Qatar and UAE.

What would be the ultimate custom order for you?

Double patty, egg, guacamole, jalape単o sauce, red onions, lettuce, tomato inside a brioche bun (lightly toasted). thewoodsheikh

SEPTEMBER

The Very Special Fashion Column Introducing the new classics. By Felwa Alhudaithy

It’s finally September, the opening season of the rest of the year. The most ‘fashionable’ month of them all. Haven’t you seen “The September Issue?” Anna Wintour plans her American Vogue Issue, the thickest and juiciest one, six months in advance. We are Destination Riyadh, thousands of miles away from fashion weeks, but we are there in spirit. Let’s start our year with a digital cleanse of everything we’ve seen of trends and collections so far. Take a deep breath and jump in…Get yourself in shape, mental shape that is. Read all the reviews of the new collections. Hunt for the ‘It’ pieces of the season, and keep them on your wish list until their release date. If you’re not a fan of the actual pret-a-porter collections, skip the reviews and focus on street style. I find inspiration on Instagram. Don’t mock me! Instagram is where all those editors, photographers and fashion trolls post their picks of the season. Take notes, for we have chosen the new classics, the going strongs and the newbees. 42 DESTINATION RIYADH SEPTEMBER 2015

The flounce hem is the happiest one. Both flirty and fun, the flounce hem works well for the office or for evening social engagements. This is exactly the kind of versatile piece every woman needs in her wardrobe. So keep those pencil skirt on hold this season. I picked Celine’s fuller effortless skirts.

Invest in Chanel’s two-tone sling backs. Those beige squared heel beauties are lacquered with a black toe, therefore adding class onto class. Donned by all the models in the fall/winter 2015-16 ready-to-wear show, and soon enough making them the most coveted item of the season. Legend has it that mademoiselle called them pumps when she first created them in 1957.

The waist is making a climb far up your midriff you’d think the 70s are back with all their glory. It's not just a high waist; it's an exaggerated silhouette that results in the look of long, lean legs and a teeny tiny waist. Pair your high waist skirt or pants with a print on print look. Gucci has the perfect jackets and silk blouses.

Designers are dying for the allgrey suit as the new look of the modern woman. Monochromatic in grey is pretty much the chicest thing you can do this fall. I love The Row’s Grey on Grey oversized ensemble.

Hiding your hands is the chicest thing that you can do. It might prevent you from eating comfortably, but fashion and function, as we all know, don’t always go hand in hand, no pun intended. Having a sleeve that falls past the hands exaggerates the line of the arm, making them appear longer and therefore chicer.

FASHION DO’S AND DON’TS, ACCORDING TO YOKO

YOKO OH YES

By Johara Al Mogbel

This woman nailed it nicely with a grey confection with a proper length and mismatched hijab to give it texture. Oh, yes!

Purple New Balances with an ankle sock and white jeans with a blue sneakers? Check, check, and check. This couple know they’re comfy.

Yoko is the DR diva alter ego and office therapist. She’s the “head” that keeps us sane and fashionably sound. Baffled? Check @destinationryd on Instagram to meet Yoko.

Hemp and diamonds are a girl’s best friend, didn’t you know? They’re this girl’s friend, anyway. Gah-orgeous.

Ooh this girl is chic. Who else would match their dress to their carry on? Much approved.

The popped collar is meh, but the bag and the trench coat? Saunter on, stylish gentleman. Saunter on.

If we could change one thing in this dapper Cuban’s outfit it would be that Hermes belt, but with a billingham back one cannot fault the need to brag a little. Mere mortals: Do not attempt unless in beachy city. 44 DESTINATION RIYADH SEPTEMBER 2015

It’s high time guys carried their own hand sanitizer and wet wipes, and this is not a bad way to do it. Not a bad way at all.

Males, take note: This is how you do roll up jeans. Fix your build while you’re at it. But do avoid the hair. Please, and thank you. There is so much right in this picture, I don’t know how to start. The flowing blouse in a lovely shade of blue? The gorgeous oxfords that pair with that gorgeous backpack? Bless you, elegant hijabi. Bless you.

YOKO OH NO

There is nothing worse than a dragging abaya. Unhygienic, seeing as it sweeps the entire unclean floor with you. Don’t. Just don’t. We hate to criticize children, but don’t pull up those socks, chica. It’s so 80s.

How not to do polka dots. Oh, lady, if only you’d worn different pants. Yoko oh no!

ALERT. ALERT. CRIMINAL OFFENSE IN SIGHT. Woman! Who goes to Disney in sky-heels??

Your tenacity to color-block is admirable, really, but perhaps you might revise the tone of colors?

Just because ripped jeans are all the craze doesn’t mean you can slice up your pants like Swiss cheese. Moderation is the key, darlin’. And by moderation I mean no.

There is color coordinating your outfit and then there’s this. Where do I even start?

What’s wrong here? Yeah, that outfit looks perfectly fine and it would be if it wasn’t in the middle of a scorching summer. Winter vests should stay in winter.

Clothes should only have zippers where they’re actually used. What, you’re going to air your knees out now? And the shoes. Everything. I’m being blinded.

What got you started?

Why do you do art?

Because it’s the most honest form of communication.

Is your work the result of sudden inspiration, or long term planning? How do you think up your concepts? Usually, I go by sudden inspiration. I’m not very strategic about developing concepts. I could go a whole month without producing anything, just sketching for practice and then produce several pieces in one day between the hours of 10 p.m. and 4 a.m. Most of my inspiration comes from things that resign in my visual memory.

What do you think of the art scene in Riyadh? Anything you’d like to see changed? I think the art scene in Riyadh is booming. So many talented artists are emerging from here. What bothers me sometimes is

MOGHAZI

Moghazi has created quite a stir in the region recently. A guy who lets his work speak volumes on his behalf, he’s kept his identity a secret. So who is Moghazi, exactly? By Johara Al Mogbel

In his own words, he’s a “music producer who entered the world of sound in a completely indirect way.” With the ability to make traditional Arabic instruments fresh and exciting, he’s managed to cultivate a dedicated following on social media, fans who wait for every new soundtrack with barely restrained patience.

Hover on the page

Y AND ENJO HIS MUSIC

What makes Moghazi stand out, though, is that he doesn’t merely depend on sampling to make his tracks. All instrumentals are recorded by him, then added in. “I disagree on the use of the word ‘remixing’. What I do is sampling, and there’s a difference. With sampling, you redistribute a part of the original song and change its tune. With remixing, you simply redistribute the song without amending anything.” And it’s all about the music for him. Known for keeping his identity under wraps, he says it hasn’t impacted his relationship with his followers. “The popularity of Moghazi doesn’t matter to me. What I care about is the feedback to the work I produce, I care about the audience that follows the music and not the man.” DOWNLOAD • DISCOVER • INTERACT 52 DESTINATION RIYADH SEPTEMBER 2015

Moghazi, who have the ability to mix Arabic culture and western overtones skillfully, is very important to the regional pop culture. There’s much to be done in the region, in his opinion. “The music scene is weaker than it should be, and it needs more specialists in the field.” For those who would like to join in, he has some great advice. “They should broaden their experience, and listen to tunes from around the world. Being stuck on one genre is never a good idea.” Indeed. Here’s to hoping we get to hear more awesomeness from the talented musician.

Moghazi started producing his own music in 2006, but he’s been playing oud since 2000. He isn’t biased when it comes to music; he loves listening to anything as long as it sounds beautiful. Except for metal, that is. The first song he remembers hearing? “Thriller.” (We’re starting to think Michael Jackson is a wizard, we really are). Moghazi’s most known project is his work with Telfaz11, from La Yekthar to Khamblah, and the channel’s traditional Eid song. “Working with Telfaz 11 was excellent! It gave me great experience in visual music.” Having musicians like

Crust and Crumbs Oh, it’s been such a long time since we had great pie. There’s a scarcity in Riyadh, for some reason. And it hasn’t caught on like the recent Lotus craze.

58 DESTINATION RIYADH SEPTEMBER 2015

Luckily, Crust and Crumbs changed all that with their lemon meringue pie. Delicious. Absolutely delicious. The lemon base is light and the perfect note of sour, and the crust is a decent size. The only issue we had was the meringue itself, we weren’t a fan as we thought it took away from the creaminess of the lemon base. Delivery was prompt, and the pie was properly packaged. Overall, this jury gives the defendant a resounding yes. Rating Overall: 4.5 crust_and_crumbs

The Pretty Milkshake We have found the prettiest milkshake in all of Riyadh. From the looks of their lotus milkshakes, it turns out that Mol10’s speciality isn’t actually their molten, it’s their shakes. We’re impressed, Mol10, we really are. You really had us tricked there. And the milkshake itself tasted really good, with the right hint of caramelized biscuit and a decent consistency. Just look at this beauty. We are smitten. Smitten, we tell you!

Sheikh Alfteer, located in Sulaimaniya, is 100 percent Egyptian, from ownership and employees to ingredients. Their specialties are Egyptian style pizza and fatayer, kushari and hawawshi.

and you can add as many extra toppings as you like.

Even though their pizza is heavy (and quite greasy), it's one of my favorites in the city. Their topping options include minced meat, Egyptian sausage, They only have one hot dog, pepperoni, pizza size and the price varies depending chicken fajita and my favorite pastrami. on the toppings,

The pizza is crispy and the sauce is just right. The fteer meshaltet you can either stuff with sweets or salty fillings, or you can just have it plain. Their staff is quite impressive and skilled with dough and general preparation of almost everything.

LA DI DA DINING … for breakfast, lunch, tea and dinner. By Johara Al Mogbel

If you follow us on social media, you might have noticed that the food department isn’t, er, the fanciest. But occasionally we do get the urge to dress up, and sit in a place where we can cross our legs and just stare at people. We tried out restaurants for all three meals, plus some tea, and here’s what we think.

1 Ambience: 8/10 Fanciness: 7/10 Nourishment: 4/10

1. The French Bakery We love bakeries. And we love it when restaurants implement a rustic vibe for decor. With that in mind, we figured The French Bakery would be the perfect choice for breakfast. We tried the club sandwich, pancakes, and the French toast, as well as a mixed plate of their petit four. In terms of presentation, their use of stone slates was a huge win and they used fresh fruit garnish. The food wasn’t up to hype though, there’s a lot of room for improvement. Which is a shame because otherwise this would be our favorite stop. Location: Takhassusi St. opposite Panorama Mall

2. Acoustic Tea Lounge Talk about town nudged us towards this artistic food concept. A transplant from the east coast, Acoustic Tea Lounge was making waves with their dessert menu, which featured western desserts with an Arabian twist. Our orders: onion rings, halloumi bruschetta, margherita pizza, tandoori chicken wraps, fajita and penne arabiata. Everything tasted enjoyable and the restaurant was certainly a place to be hoity toity, as it was so quiet and relaxing. And the art added a reasonable air of pretentiousness about the place. Only thing we’d change is the cookie cutter furnishings, very Best Westernish air about them. Oh, we came back to try the breakfast, and the cereal French toast was delicious. Location: Tahlia St., by Fauchon acoustictealounge

3. aZenGrill The newest kid in town, aZenGrill is an Asian fusion restaurant with a purportedly Michelin star chef. And situated in the new Boulevard Burj Rafal Kempinski, it can’t get any swankier. We booked, we showed up, and we swanned in in our Salvatore Ferregamos and were promptly confused by the menu. Way too many options, and not enough of a clear direction over what cuisine is which. We tried the aZen burger, the Singaporean noodles, the roasted duck, the kimchee and the tempura prawns. For the price, everything was slightly bland except

for the burger and the mashed potatoes, which were absolutely delightful. The service was decent and they give you a hot towel when you first walk in. And their matcha ice cream is quite delicious as well. All in all, we’d definitely come in again for the burger.

Scaramouche was a given on our list. Situated in the pricey Harvey Nichols, and with an air of exclusivity about it, we figured we couldn’t get any fancier, quick Sophia Webster purchase included. We decided to go for tea, as the food wasn’t really recommended. We tried the hot chocolate, café latte, and the iced coffee as well as the chicken tortellini and the vanilla cake. The drinks were really good, served in a tea set reminiscent of the Mad Hatter’s tea party, which we approve of. The tortellini though, was a bit confused, and we weren’t fans of the vanilla cake as it had jam in it. We’re so-so on the food, but we need to give it another try.

Sweet indulgence wrapped in a bow.

A recently opened store on Omar bin Abdulaziz Road in Alrabwah neighborhood by exit 14, L’ORO caught our attention with a display of brightly patterned chocolates neatly arranged in a pretty gold box. Could it be that we’d finally found a chocolatier that looked perfect and tasted good? Oh yes, yes we had. They have three different kinds of chocolate: wrapped, chocolate covered with fruits, and the sort that had the aforementioned sugar-printed chocolate pieces. There was a dizzying array of flavors as well, with pralines, fruit fillings, chocolate fillings, covered with chocolate made with the best cocoa beans, produced especially for L’ORO in their own manufacturing

atelier. Most importantly, they fulfill our need for luxurious dates in modern packaging. With the number one supplier for dates, the well known Amal Alkhair dates factory under L’ORO’s helm, it wasn’t that hard to see why the dates tasted that good. They had pre-made chocolate trays, but they also offer customized ones so of course we got on that immediately. And brides? Fret not, L’ORO’s especially equipped to cater the needs of any wedding requirements. The shop didn’t just impress us with their choices however, each member of their staff had

Our bodies cannot synthesize a few essential fatty acids that we need like omega 3. Omega 3 is widely known for improving mental health and aiding memory. This exists naturally in oily fish as EPA and DHA. You can eat fish oil (if you're hardcore), or just eat oily fish such as salmon, trout and mackerel.

Nuts are a great source of vitamin E. Studies have shown that vitamin E might help prevent cognitive decline.

Broccoli

Broccoli is an amazing source of choline and vitamin K. Choline improves memory whilst vitamin K helps to enhance cognitive abilities and improve brainpower.

Caffeine

A few cups of tea or coffee a day can enhance memory and focus thereby increasing brainpower. However, too much caffeine will leave you feeling jittery.

Dark Chocolate Dark chocolate has been proven to increase blood flow to the brain. It also helps improve cognitive function and memory. It contains 15 times more antioxidants than blueberries.

SPIRITUALITY

MALCOLM X and KSA By Ahmad Sabri

This year many people in America and across the world commemorated the 50th anniversary of the assassination of Malcolm X, the influential Black Muslim leader who was shot dead in Harlem in 1965. But what does this have to do with KSA?

68 DESTINATION RIYADH SEPTEMBER 2015

It turns out it has a lot to do with Jeddah and Makkah. Malcolm X was known for his defiance, his militant stances, and for being unapologetically supportive of the right to selfdefense even if it was in the form of armed self-defense.

But he was also a member of the Nation of Islam, an ideologically opaque group that preached racist notions. However, this changed towards the end of his short life when Malcolm X traveled to Hajj and received the cultural shock of his life. The shock

SOURCE PHOTO/HIPHOPANDPOLITICS.COM

You’re thinking, “How are Malcolm X and KSA related?”

that changed him forever and possibly cost him his life. He expressed this cultural shock in the letters he wrote in Makkah and Jeddah, from the Kandara Palace Hotel (recently demolished) to be more precise. One such letter, sent from Jeddah to his autobiographer Alex Haley, is still preserved and has the Kandara Palace Hotel logo on it.

In another letter, sent from Makkah, X states: “During the past eleven days here in the Muslim world, I have eaten from the same plate, drunk from the same glass, and slept in the same bed (or on the same rug) - while praying to the same God - with fellow Muslims, whose eyes were the bluest of blue, whose hair was the blondest of blond, and whose skin was the whitest of white. And in the words and in the actions in the deeds of the ‘white’ Muslims, I felt the same sincerity that I felt among the black African Muslims of Nigeria, Sudan and Ghana.” His words marked a major shift in his thought and in the Black movement. His previous stance on inter-racial wars were moderated and his belief that there is no solution for the race problem disappeared. Malcolm X wasn’t surprised

that Muslims of all colors managed to overcome the race problem, rather he was surprised that in Islam there was no race problem in the first place. He wasn’t impressed by how Muslims struggled for equality in Hajj but by how this equality was flowing effortlessly. His remarkable words, “the spiritual path of truth - the only way left to America to ward off the disaster that racism inevitably must lead

to” and that “America needs to understand Islam, because this is the one religion that erases from its society the race problem,” are still relevant today with the current racial turmoil erupting in various US cities and communities, but is it relevant to us as well? This is the question to ask and issue to contemplate. Had Malcolm

X made his Hajj journey in 2015 would he be as deeply moved as he was in 1964? How successful are we now in implementing the teachings of Islam in the lands of the two holy mosques? Are we discriminating against any nationality, race, color, gender or class? This is our responsibility and our challenge whenever we remember Malcolm X, may he rest in peace.

Nobody can give you freedom. Nobody can give you equality or justice or anything. If you’re a man, you take it. — Malcolm X

JEALOUSY

the Good & the Bad How to tame the green-eyed monster within. By Sobia Javed

Jealousy - One word consisting of eight letters, but something so powerful that it can destroy relationships, foster ill feelings and provoke rage. In this social media era, we are bombarded with Facebook photos or status updates depicting people’s “perfect” lives.

Or open any magazine and there are pictures of celebrities looking flawless or wearing their size 8 jeans one month after giving birth. It’s all too easy to feel inadequate, inferior and lacking – feelings which simply incite jealousy.

What can you do to overcome the bad kind of jealousy? 1. Remember that it is a sin, and as Muslims, we try to avoid sins as much as possible. Ask Allah to help you deal with your negative emotions. 2. Read the Qur’an. It is full of inspiring stories, and there are numerous reminders to ponder over. Allah says in the Qur’an, “Do not wish for that by which Allah has made some of you exceed others…”

3. Look at those that are less fortunate than you. The Prophet (PBUH) said, “Do not look to those above you. Look to those below you, as it will more likely remind you of Allah’s favor bestowed on you.” (Source: Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim)

4. Become a volunteer. 5. Write down the blessings you have.

(Quran, chapter 4, verse 32)

72 DESTINATION RIYADH SEPTEMBER 2015

There are different types of jealousy and Islamic teachings distinguish clearly between them.

Hasad Destructive jealousy (or envy), which is referred to as Hasad in Arabic, is the absolute worst kind that one can experience. It is where you wish evil upon a fellow human being and feel elated when misfortune

befalls the person that you are jealous of. If someone else has something that you want, you feel rage. Not only does your desire grow stronger to obtain this thing but you ardently wish that it is taken away from the other person! It can manifest itself in other ways too, such as if another person is praised in your presence, you immediately feel angry and jealous, and you try to downplay their talent, or dismiss it Ghibtah In contrast to hasad, there is another type of jealousy called Ghibtah. This is actually a good kind of jealousy where you feel no malice towards someone who has something you want, but rather, it makes you strive to achieve the same.

completely. Or even worse, you pretend to join in with the praise, but use sly, cutting remarks to defame that person “innocently.” The Prophet (PBUH) said, “Beware of jealousy, for verily it destroys good deeds the way fire destroys wood.”

(Source: Abu Dawud)

Imagine that! Place a piece of wood in fire and it is rapidly destroyed. In the same way, your good deeds are destroyed by jealousy.

Ghibtah generally refers to more spiritual rather than material things, such as when you see someone with more Islamic knowledge then you, thus inspiring you to gain more knowledge yourself.

One Paw at a Time A one-on-one with Sara Al Fahaad, founder of local animal shelter, Aleef Rescue Center.

By Nora Saiari

I’m a 29-year-old happily married mother of a 5-year-old child. I was raised on a farm in Thumamah, where I lived with all sorts of animals; cats, mice, chickens, dogs - you name it! Since I was 7 or 8, I‘ve been rescuing animals from the area and bringing them to the farm to care for them.

When was the shelter established?

The center was established two years ago as a nonprofit volunteer project. It is located within a Customs Authority dogs training center, where a clinic was built along with spacious care units to have the animals in.

74 DESTINATION RIYADH SEPTEMBER 2015

What kind of animals does the shelter rescue? We have the capacity to save all kinds of animals, from turtles to birds and more, but we mostly rescue dogs and cats that get abandoned by their owners, they’re the most likely animals to suffer abuse, neglect and desertion. We also do sterilization of stray cats and dogs to prevent random breeding in an area or neighborhood.

What are some of the challenges you face?

Mostly the lack of animal welfare knowledge and compassion towards them. Lots of times people question the neutering procedure and think that it isn’t important, but at the shelter we try to educate people about the lifelong health benefits of spaying or neutering animals; first and foremost to the animals themselves as well as for the

try and prevent such actions, we increased the age limit of adopting individuals and we request parental approval prior to adoption.

What is the adoption process in Aleef?

When an animal is chosen, we send the adoption forms via email, then we conduct a mini interview with the person who wants to adopt, then a brief about the animal is given by the veterinarian at our clinic, in addition to an orientation session on important things such as how to care for the pet, the necessary medical checkups and vaccination plan. Our adoption service is available all over KSA, not just Riyadh.

How can someone volunteer in the shelter?

Parents, please instill mercy and compassion in your children’s hearts towards those helpless creatures. Educate them on how to understand their pet’s behavior before letting them take control over an animal’s life. — Sarah AlFahaad

Most of our volunteers are online; they help by spreading the word about animals up for adoption. There are no specific standards, everybody is encouraged to volunteer in any way they see fit and I strongly encourage them. Just contact me via text or WhatsApp and we can schedule an interview.

What are your aspirations for the project and animal welfare in the country? To launch an official governmental institution that falls under the Ministry of Agriculture. I’m hopeful and certain that the government is working towards this as promised by officials. Mob: +966-533356633 AleefWorld

Paris is renowned for its fashion, and it earned its title with grace, charm… and an abundance of shoes. No, really, there are shoe stores every few blocks and we couldn’t be more ecstatic. A Parisian never goes out less than absolutely put together, and elegant footwear is regarded as very important, so the fashion scene had to evolve to suit the style needs of the city-goers and their simultaneous need to walk. The nature of a typical Parisian’s sense of style tends to permeate boutiques and stores, so Paris is an excellent place to be clothing with streamlined silhouettes and block colors, basic high quality 78 DESTINATION RIYADH SEPTEMBER 2015

wardrobe staples, and stylish comfortable shoes. Bearing that in mind, it’s a bit difficult to recommend a certain district for its fashion. Every street has its own charm and quantity of boutiques, so the best way to get a coveted unique piece is to frankly, simply walk around. There are a number of areas where we love to explore more than others, though.

RUE SAINT HONORE

The true luxury street of Paris, Rue Saint Honore houses the majority of the largest and most exclusive brands, from Christian Louboutin, Hermes, Brunello Cucinelli, Christian Dior and Chanel, to Rene Caovilla and Miu Miu. And it’s no wonder it holds such an illustrious address, what with it being housed in the first arrondissement and in close proximity to the presidential palace.

Pro tip The street is frequently used as the center for a number of live fashion events, the most famous being Vogue’s Fashion Night Out. Rent an apartment or a hotel room in the area to enjoy the festivities. This year’s event will be held on September 22, and it’s not to be missed!

OTHER THINGS TO CHECK

Colette, Paris’s version of the overpriced and always busy hipster department store. Any up and coming designers will most definitely be housed here, and it’s considered the it place amongst many rich youngsters. The department store also makes it a habit to team up with a number of artists and brands to develop an in-house line which can lead to pretty interesting results. The latest: Louis Vuitton for Colette.

Stroll down here to window shop, or if you have deep pockets, spend on the sales. And if you’d like to own something truly authentic, pop into the Pierre Cardin vintage store. Dresses there run about 2,000 euros and up, but you’ll rest easy knowing you own something from one of the most influential designers in recent mode history. DESTINATIONRYD.COM 79

BOULEVARD HAUSSMANN

Leafy, wide, and delightfully planned, Boulevard Haussmann is a treat to walk in. With small boutiques lining the streets, they will keep you well busy up until you reach the jewel of the boulevard itself: Printemps. A French department store that was founded in the late 1800s, it revolutionized retail practices and introduced the concept of discount sales to clear out outdated stock, which we are so very very grateful for.

Also, as we discovered this year, it also has the yummiest crepe, right by the Saint Germain Church. Think ahead by wearing comfortable shoes, you’re going to be strolling quite a bit. Pass by the Seine if you’d like to spruce up your living room with a poster, or if you’d like to own a vintage fashion newspaper from the 1920s and earlier! more mainstream options, and design of the main women’s department is more open and airy than Printemps. They also host a weekly free fashion show for anyone interested.

Nowadays, it hosts a myriad of brands and is the best place should you be short on time and would like a one stop place for all your shopping. We like it best when there are sales, and their shoe department is beee-yootiful. Pro tip In case you need a break, Brasserie Printemps makes a delightful lamb stew and their ice cream is delicious.

OTHER THINGS TO CHECK

Galeries Lafayette is just down the road by Printemps, although personally we find it has gone slightly touristy these days, with the buyers focusing more on what will sell than what is beautiful. Nonetheless, it’s a good place to check out, as their shoe department offers 80 DESTINATION RIYADH SEPTEMBER 2015

SAINT-GERMAINDES-PRES

One of our favorite areas to walk in, there’s so much to see in Boulevard Saint Germain. And certainly tons to shop for. For one, both Armani and Sonia Rykiel can be found here alongside famous cafes such as the Deux Magots and new store innovations like Tanya Heath.

OTHER THINGS TO CHECK

You may be tempted to stop by Armani Cafe for a refresher, but do try to resist. They’re quite snobbish, and a bit subpar compared to its next-door neighbor Pouchkine Cafe. What Pouchkine lacks in a fashionable name it makes up for splendidly in a gorgeous interior and the best honey cake we’ve tried so far. Or try your luck at the Sonia Rykiel concept cafe in their flagship store, a reported 50,000 books were used to create the pop-up library concept.

MARCHE AUX PUCES DE SAINT-OUEN

Now, shopping in climatecontrolled glitzy shops can be fun, but the true heart and soul of it, no matter what anyone tells you, is only found in open-air bric-abrac markets. And like every publicly loved figure, Paris harbors a dirty secret: It has some of the finest fashion flea markets in Europe. Actually, it has the biggest flea market area in the world, a massive conglomeration of markets where antique dealers display their curated collections. Almost everything can be found here, whether it be furniture, art, vintage threads and jewelry and everything in between. Our favorite find of all time was a pair of vintage Lanvin pearl earrings from the eighties. Keep an eye out for overlooked fashion, and don’t be afraid to haggle; keep in mind that true finds have gotten rarer over the years.

OTHER THINGS TO CHECK

Rue Lécuyer is, reportedly, where the dealers themselves buy from. We haven’t been that far yet, but it’s worth a try.

WHERE TO STAY

We love Rue Saint Honore for one more thing; it’s a great place to stay in. It’s safe and quiet, and there are a number of hotels available. We personally love the Mandarin Oriental, but there’s also the Buddha Bar Hotel if you want to be smack dab in the middle (it’s opposite Salvadore Ferregamo). The Westin is another clean and modern choice, with reasonable prices if you book early on and by a decent shopping area in Rue Rivoli. If you’re looking for something closer to the Champs Elysee, Le Royal Monceau is beautiful. A Raffles hotel with a concentration on fashion, it was designed by Phillip Starck and, for the clothes-ready, has an easy to access wardrobe. STAR GAZING AT MOON VALLEY The perfect isolated spot for star gazers. We’ve heard so many stories about Moon Valley from our friends who’ve visited the place before so we finally decided to see it for ourselves. We set off from Jeddah after Asr, but our 115-kilometer journey took quite long, as we went with a big group and faced the regular problems when you go with one; those being the frequent stops, missing out on directions and slow drivers. On top of that, our navigation app took us through a longer route, prolonging our journey. Moon Valley is known for its unique rock formations, some 82 DESTINATION RIYADH SEPTEMBER 2015

It wouldn’t have been more than 10 minutes since the person who lit the bonfire left. We rushed to it and got branches from desert shrubs to keep the bonfire burning. Lighting the bonfire, which was the tough part, was already done. So we just had to regularly feed the glowing ember with planks of wood and whatever we could find that burns. of which look like they’ve been crafted by humans, but when you look closely there are no signs of chisels or pastels being used on these rocks. They have naturally formed over millions of years in such mind-boggling shapes.

When I looked up at the sky, there was a dazzling mass of stars, a truly unforgettable spectacle. I’d never seen anything like it on my travels around Saudi Arabia. It was the kind of place where one could almost see a 360° panorama of the sky.

What was even more surprising was that despite being located so close to Jeddah, the sky here was so clear, whereas in Jeddah we’d consider it a lucky day if we could count around 10 of them in the night sky. There was hardly any light pollution whatsoever. It was completely dark. Perhaps that is what makes this area so extraordinary. The night was moon-less, making it even darker. Everyone started sharing whatever little knowledge they had of astronomy. From spotting the Sirius to Mars – well at least thought we saw them; and our group seemed

I expected it to be an actual valley considering its name. I found it to be a plain desert with unique rock formations protruding out and mountains bordering the stretch of desert. There is a narrow road that runs through it. After hovering on this road from one end to the other we found a spot that still had the last few remains of a bonfire still burning. Those glowing embers in the dark night were such a beautiful sight to see. DESTINATIONRYD.COM 83

to go berserk by the findings. We even managed to spot a few constellations, including Orion’s Belt. At a distance we were able to spot some other campers at Moon Valley, but other than them it was just us and the silence that surrounded us in the darkness. There is something about silence that we all loved. Even in the city when we think we’ve found silence, in reality we don’t – the sounds of the ticking clock, the air conditioner buzzing, the car passing down the streets are such distractions that don’t allow us to connect with the quiet. This was a totally different experience for us, so silent that we could hear the soft whisperings of the wind in our ears.

84 DESTINATION RIYADH SEPTEMBER 2015

Our way back was much easier. We didn’t follow the navigation app this time around -just relied on the locals, those being the ones sitting in petrol pumps on deserted streets. Moon Valley is a place that is a must for stargazers; a place where you can lie on the

ground and just gaze at the stars for hours whilst getting lost in the beauty and silence of the desert night. NOTE: If you’re going there download a stargazing app on your phone, such as Star Chart, to have an even more fun time exploring the skies. PROPHET SHUAIB’S ANCIENT TOWN This ancient dwelling near the town of Al Bad was home to the Midianites, the people to whom Prophet Shuaib (AS) was sent. By Mohammed Mirza

Prophet Shuaib is one of the four Arabian Prophets mentioned in the Qur’an. Archaeologists believe that this site, also known as Madain Shuaib, dates back to the 2nd millennium BC. Sitting around 170 kilometers from the city of Tabuk, Al Bad is easily accessible by car. The site is located around 100 meters off the road.

What’s notable here apart from the carved façade is the remarkable size of the edifice. The interior of the edifices surprisingly, are unadorned - a striking opposite to the ornate exteriors. Archeological artifacts and other important finds from the site are currently housed in the Tayma museum. HOW TO GET THERE Coordinates: 28.48823, 34.99920

The dwelling here has a striking contrast to the other Nabataean cities of Petra and Madain Saleh. This town, hand-carved out of the pink sandstone mountains manages to display its former glory and subsequent desolation both at the same time.

Newly constructed steps take visitors to the upper portions, where these dwellings carved in stone stand. These dwellings have elaborately designed facades.
