Because in our wedding the zaffa started by us coming out on a balcony , and I came out alone at first . I was shivering, although I’m not a big believer in the evil eye but just suddenly started reading Quraan out loud ,but thank God the music was too loud for anyone to hear me (but on tape it was so obvious because my lips were moving).

And when my beautiful wife came out she was saviour, my gardian angel I just kept on looking into her eyes, but she ignored me and was waving hi to her friends.

Maher Mouminah When I got married, walking into the hall with everyone staring at you was a great experience. Specially that I was ready to be married, and very happy at that moment. It’s the climax of happiness, coupled with the fear of the unknown, and excitement which makes you forget about all those people around you. But then the camera’s keep flashing from every side, and you keep on smiling until your cheekbone start to hurt, and you start getting annoyed and frustrated by the number of cameras. It makes you drift away from your happy moment (current) to focus on a moment in the future where both of you gona be looking back to the photos to remember that day. I think we should focus more on enjoying the moment, and only let 1 camera take photos (which is the pride and groom camera) rather than annoying them with 100 camera around them and everyone of them telling them “look here, look there”.

Earth Hour: We here at

DJ make it a point to be as eco-conscious as possible. So when we heard about this we got pretty excited. On March 27, Saudi Arabia took part officially for the first time in Earth Hour, with Riyadh, Jeddah and Dammam going dark from 8:30-9:30 PM. Several government departments and private companies took part as well as private homes. This is very encouraging sign for the Kingdom since this means that a greener lifestyle is becoming more and more popular or at least the idea of it which, for Saudi Arabia is still impressive. Earth Hour works to encourage people around the world to reduce emissions and be more aware of climate change. The event is sponsored by Saudi Wildlife.

Exchange & Refund Policies

Exchanging items from stores is never fun anywhere in the world. But for some reason stores in Jeddah want to make it even more infuriating with some of the shortest exchange policies around. Most stores have a one or two day exchange policy. Some are generous enough to have a three day policy.

Truely they are exceptional for this. Or how about they have the same exchange policies if not longer since clothing stores have no dressing rooms for women to try on clothes.

In the US it is mandatory for stores to have a 30-45 day exchange policy for items.

Why is that so out of the question here?

Most items when they reach Saudi Arabia become so much more expensive. It must be their contact with the air that makes them more expensive - so why is a reasonable exchange policy so difficult to come by.

Women in Saudi Arabia have to contend with frustrating drivers as well as stores which close early for prayer times and open late. With that three days can go by quickly.

Crème brûlée at Maggiano’s This month we recommend the crème brûlée at Maggiano’s as well as the entire establishment. The crème brûlée is worth recommending this month because it is without a doubt the best in town. We’ve reviewed Maggiano’s once before it’s quickly becoming a favorite around town.

The food and service are almost without comparison at Maggiano’s with everything from the table linens to the service, held at a high standard. The crème brûlée is both soft and crunchy where it has to be and doesn’t have a distinct lack of texture like in many places in Jeddah. Some even try to pass cream caramel as this sweet treat, Maggiano’s is keeping us happy and our tummies filled with little to no problems.

As an ex-pat, we know just how important it is to keep in touch with friends as family. This month, we compare mobile, landline and broadband packages for the main providers in Jeddah.

Mobile

The main telecommunications service providers in the Kingdom are STC, Mobily and Zain They all serve their own benefits and, generally, the competitive offers follow suit of one another.

All the of the major networks provide both pre-paid and post-paid services. There are positives and negatives for both; you’ll probably get a better all round package by having a postpaid package, however, if there are any complications with the bills then you will have wished you stuck to prepaid! There’s also more of a variety with the postpaid packages. You’ll need to do some personal research to determine which network and package is best suited to you, based on the network your friends are on, what your monthly usage is and what times you call the most.

Below we’ve tried to compare similar packages and have listed a few but it’s best to visit their websites or branches for their current offers.

Zain has a calculator which incorporates the different types of usage and then notifies you of the best plan and expected costs of the different packages.

It’s always best to check the quality of service/signals in your particular area. Try asking your neighbours which provider and package they are on and how they find the service quality.

Internet on-the-go

The advantages of the prepaid option is that you can save your money if you’re not going to use the service for a month, or if you intend to move residence a number of times then you don’t have to worry about informing the provider. The only difficulty is that you need to recharge your credit every month for continued service. The speed of service varies according to your signal levels.

To begin your journey on attaining a landline you’ll need your proper documention; such as, iqama number, contact details and address details to your building. In addition to this you will require ‘DP Details’ to complete your request to have an engineer sent out to install your line. It’s best to ask your landlord or neighbours for the location of these details.

Edgar Davids:

Football great lands in Jeddah

Wearing a bright red shirt emblazoned with the logo of Monta, his company, and his dark dreadlocks tied tight behind his head, Edgar Davids sets his trademark sunglasses down in front of him and sips a Red Bull in the lobby of the Jeddah Hilton hotel.

The Dutch footballer was invited to Jeddah for the Red Bull Streetstyle competition which pitted 35 competitors against each other on a stage outside Red Sea Mall on Feb., 25.

Participants competed against each other in sets of two on stage, each trying to out perform the other with different freestyle techniques using a Monta ball.

Scratching his chin Davids said playing a sport like football from an early age is important for later on in life.

“If you can dedicate yourself to one thing at an early age you can learn to focus intently which is extremely important when you become an adult,” Davids said.

He said that freestyling has slowly started to change.

“Before they used to just juggle with the ball but now with these new influences its almost like they’re dancing with the ball. You see a lot of influence coming from the b-boys (Breakdancers). It’s a show with someone expressing themselves with a ball.”

Davids is not your average footballer.

He is still recognized as one of the greats even after his retirement from professional football a few years ago. From Nike commercials,to his current work with Monta and Redbull, the footballer best known for his freestyling, now works developing and testing ideas and designs for Monta.

Stones: Turning passion into action

This May will mark the 62nd anniversary of the occupation of Palestine. It will probably pass quietly, perhaps unknowingly. The “Memory of Stones” campaign aims to change that.Founded by Hidyah Abbas, the “Memory of Stones” campaign has a simple goal: to spread awareness on the Palestinian cause.

The campaign commemorated the 60th anniversary of the occupation of Palestine, the 61st, and the first anniversary of the Gaza war in January 2009. The offensive was recognized in the Kingdom with activities held in Jeddah and in the Eastern Province.

The activities offered by the campaign include lectures, photography exhibitions, E-mail campaigns, poetry nights, documentary nights, children activities, and hosting prominent personalities like Saudi writer Dr. Abdelmohsin Hilal to an open seminar.

“The campaign has three main methods (of) spreading awareness. (The first), is to spread basic information on the situation in Palestine; (the second) is to fight misconceptions on the Palestinian cause....(The third) is to teach people how to be positive and get involved in the cause regardless of gender or age, as well as how to stand against a normalized Israel,” said Ahmed Sabri, one of the organizers of the campaign.

Sabri said he was disappointed with the lack of support and knowledge of the Palestinian conflict, on behalf of Saudis. However, he also said he was hopeful that the campaign would encourage more Saudis to turn their own passion into action.

Fire Chief and instructor for the program, Ena’am Al-Abbasi Al-Hashemi, is the most outspoken of the group and caretaker of a fiery passion not often seen.

As the smoke fades from a mock fire trial, five fire fighters walk backwards in formation slowly as they hold a high pressure hose. As more smoke clears, their bright yellow fireproof vest reflect the evening sun’s rays and their brightly colored safety helmets glisten. The fire fighters are different from the rest in Saudi Arabia. As they walk away from the smoldering ruin, their smiles make that obvious right away. Smiles that peer out from from faces wrapped in hijab.

The women work in groups to put out a fiery diesel plate as part of their training using fire extinguishers as well as high pressure hoses (bottom right). As part of their training they also have a theoretical portion (bottom left) to the course where they learn about different fire fighting equipment and techniques to use in the home.

Although not an official part of the Civil Defense services who combat fire everyday, these women and young girls are learning the ropes of fire fighting on a volunteer basis. Young mothers and students alike volunteer for the program and learn how to keep themselves and their friends safe should something happen. Fire Chief and instructor for the program, Ena’am Al-Abbasi AlHashemi, is the most outspoken of the group and caretaker of a fiery passion not often seen.

Her bright smile is quickly replaced with an intense expression as she talks about her organization of volunteers and how important the program is to her.

“In Saudi Arabia we incorporate our religion into everything. So, everywhere you go men and women are segregated. In case of a fire it’s difficult when a strange man comes to (help) us and we aren’t wearing our hijabs.”

She said the program, which teaches women how to react in fire-related situations, aims to avoid another tragedy like the one in Makkah in 2006.

“The problem is that sometimes people have died, not from a fire, but they push each other (and panic) because they don’t know where the fire exit is or what to do,” Al-Hashemi said. “So now there can be a trained person there who will know how to react and she will guide them to the right place. Since she’s a woman just like them there wont be any embarrassment if they aren’t covered. She will understand their needs and she will understand their situation.”

The program is taken to places like Dar Al-Hekma and Effat College on a regular basis, in addition to primary schools where students are taught basic fire safety. Several of the women taking part in the program said since they began learning to fight fire, the experience has empowered them to react against men who harass them and similar encounters.

A 36-year veteran of the Civil Defense, her father and founder of the group, Adnan Al-Abbasi Al-Hashimi, said the training was important because it gave women the chance to act during a crisis like a fire in the home.

“Sometimes some people because of how we are educated, they think that ladies cannot work in the civil defense. Yes, women are different from men, but she can help her family in her home.”

We need time.”

Ena’am Al-Abbasi Al-Hashemi chimed in, “We hope we can have a section in the Civil Defense, so that in case of an emergency the female section can go with them and they do their part; and we do our part. We aren’t there to challenge them we are just completing their job.”

TURKISH BAZAAR: Held in the garden of the Turkish consulate’s residency, a festival of all things Turkish was held on Feb. 24 and displayed with everything from intricate and delicately woven scarves and accessories to hand made metal jewelry, to sweets and Turkish dishes. In the arts corner you could have a an artist diligently hand-paint an intricate pattern around a calligraphic verse from the Quran. Another woman demonstrated Ebru, the Turkish method of paper marbling that its unique to the region. There were also ceramic hand painted bowls and plates, decorative metal earthenware andof course, lots of Turkish coffee for all.

MOBILY MARATHON : On Wednesday, March 10, the streets of Jeddah became ground zero for the Mobily Jeddah Marathon 2010. Over six thousand contestants took part in the race started

Marianne Alireza: a constant voice in a changing world

Marianne Alireza is not like most women in Saudi Arabia. She is both an expat and a Saudi both in body and mind. Now in her late 80’s Alireza still has that same passion for people and communicating about Saudi Arabia that she has had since the early 1970’s when she first published her book “At the Drop of a Veil”.

Originally printed in 1971 and banned in the Kingdom, the book is now allowed and reprinted in the Kingdom.

“I’ve been here forever,” she said with a quick laugh. “I first came in ‘45 and man oh man I can’t believe the changes. I don’t think there’s any parallel in history.”

When Alireza arrived the country was still in its infancy with an economy built on the sale of dates and animal skins. “There were not even 56 paved miles of road in the entire Kingdom,” Alireza said with her Oklahoman twang still strong even after having left her North American home so many years ago.

husband. Her father was a half Polish, half Native American Creek Indian and in 1994 she returned to Oklahoma to receive the keys to the city of Muscogee.

Summing up her book, she said, “it’s a people’s story. We laugh at the same things, we cry at the same things. People are people.”

Her next book “Enlarge Thy Turban” is still in the process of being completed but Alireza said it was a continuation of the story in her current book.

On March 8, Athr Gallery hosted Sotheby’s Deputy Director of Middle East Department, Dalya Islam. It was a real privilege to have such a reputable speaker present informed lectures on two very relevant topics on today’s Arab art scene.

One lecture entitled, “Contemporary Arab Art,” revealed the trends of Arab artists, as well as explored some of the names currently out there signing their artistic works in the international art scene. “The lecture provided a summary both established and emerging artists from the region,” Islam explained, “while touching on the different markets for contemporary Arab art.” Islam said that most of the figurative art is collected by previous generations, who in addition to having a preference to the more classical style, also have the wallets for it.

“Contemporary art tends to be more affordable to new collectors who want to begin investing in art,” explains Islam.

Islam described contemporary Arab art as being divided into three categories: Calligraphy, Modern, and Contemporary.

The main names of each division are Ahmed Mustafa, whose beautiful calligrams are a top sellers for buyers from the region who can appreciate not only the surface aesthetic, but also comprehend the written language.

Mahmoud Saeed appears to be the first name off everyone’s tongue whenever Modern art is being discussed, while Saudi’s very own Abdulnasser Gharem is taking the international contemporary art scene by storm. Gharem recently presented at this year’s international

art fair, Art Dubai, where his work shown

by Berlin-based Galerie Caprice Horn, sold for $50,000 and was considered one of the highlights of the prestigious fair. The other lecture Islam gave was “The Art of Collecting,” which she describes in her own words as “An overview of different major collectors of the 20th century in order to paint a picture of how one may form a collection and the importance of the art collector in developing an art scene.”

Islam said that although an individual does not need to be educated in art to know how to collect it, they should also be well aware before investing in a piece. “It’s important to build up a knowledge of the art; just like one would research the market before buying a car or house, you want to make sure you’re making a smart investment.” That being said, Islam also stresses that the financial return is not the only criteria. “Art is something you need to react to intuitively,” she explains, “Above all, it needs to speak to you.” Well said.

On March 1, the opening of three interior boutiques in Omniah Center on Al-Rawdah Street set the stage for a glamorous night of intellectual exchange and corporate networking.

The evening highlighted the interior showrooms of the boutiques, where unrestricted access was given to explore and learn more about what each store has to offer. Technolight provided innovative house fixtures and gadgets that transform any home into a state-of-the-art living habitat. From expresso machines to remote control lights, this boutique is sure to be a modern man’s favorite.

The showroom of Vallar showcased creative storage solutions that double-up as contemporary and stylish home furnishings.

Furniture and art were also in abundance and incited many a wish list.to all who gazed inside.

Leccio is a high-end bathroom furnishing store, whose products contain smooth curves and modern lines that lend to their innovative and ultra-modern look. Together, these stores are the future of interior design and present the local market with direct access. Do-it-Yourself home projects never seemed this inviting.

An open sculpture garden was organized by RIDA Gallery and presented the works of such renowned sculptors as Nabeel Najdi, Rabae Al Akhra, Mohammed Al Thakfi, and Mansour Jan. It was an especially spectacular treat for connoisseurs of art, who are more than familiar with these four prestigious Arab artists.

Made up of over 260 seperate pieces of Travertine marble, this sculpture by Spanish architect and sculptor Julio Lafuente took five years to build. The pieces were shipped and reassembled in Jeddah. The sculpture is in the shape of V pointing towards the Ka’aba in Makkah and is located on Andalus street. Al-Kibla in Arabic means “the direction for prayer.”

Libra Boutique: Balancing the scales of fashion

Those born under the star sign Libra are known to exhibit good taste, a tendency towards perfectionism and attention to detail.

Among the typical likes of Libra is a love of beauty, subtle colors, and haute couture. Is it any surprise then that Rana Ismail and Dr. Bazza Saud, owners of Libra Boutique are both Librans?

Libra Boutique, opened in April 2009, offers a singularly unique approach to fashion in the Kingdom. Within the store, comfort is queen and simplicity reigns. This creed applies to the four main lines offered by the store – Casual, Casual Chic, Easy Line, and Couture, all of which are either designed by Ismail or handpicked by the owners.

However, each line offers a distinct identity and mood emphasized by seemingly trivial details.

For example, the Easy Line melds attributes typical of tracksuits – elasticated bands, sports-inspired detailed, zippers, onto unexpected pieces of clothing such as skirts or dresses. On the other hand, the 28 DESTINATION JEDDAH

“I always avoid the (stronger) perfumes myself,” Saud said while emphasizing that her perfumes are lighter and classier than other oud based mixtures. “Libra is completely original. While we pride ourselves on comfort and simplicity, it is equally important that the piece reflects the personality of the wearer, rather than changing or detracting from it,” Ismail elaborated.

The pieces and lines offered in Libra are changed every few months or so in order to keep with the trends but are usually separated by season – summer and winter. American, Italian, and French designers are also showcased within the boutique but Ismail is quick to point out that the accessories are selected to act as complements to the pieces.

The store also offers French and Arab perfumes which are mixed by Saud. Lighter and more luxurious than other oud perfumes on the market, they are designed to be the perfect accessory like any piece of jewelry.

“I don’t consider myself a ‘designer’,” she said seriously. “Both myself and Bazza are more artists. What is different is our chosen mediums. It’s a perfect partnership – Bazza mixes perfumes and I mix fabrics. We’re very driven by our moods and feelings. For example, I can go through a stage where I design only skirts. Skirts for three months!”

Khuzam Palace: A window through history

It is really never easy for the average person to go see the King. This remains just as true today as it was over half a century ago. As a result, my first visit to Khuzam Palace was a very short but interesting experience.

The 90-year-old wrought iron gates flanked by 200 year old Turkish canons, both rusty and loaded with dead leaves and empty juice boxes. I took my first steps through the gates and inhaled the royal desert air.

If you can recall a particular scene from Titanic; where the old dying Rose re-visits the ruins of the ship, and as she walks along, the rusty old ship transforms back into its original colorful grandeur; you can read my thoughts. I was forming a mental image of the bygone splendor of the dilapidated palace. Only a section of it survives today.

The Khuzam park, the mosque and much of the surrounding area was once within the royal boundaries. I began to envision the palace in its entirety. Just as traditional Hijazi music set off somewhere in my head there was an abrupt pause.

The vice-curator was pointing out some large rocks to the left of the main entrance.

These were 4800 years old covered in manmade carvings.

These had little to do with the palace and were in fact were brought here recently by the museum curator in an attempt to preserve the archaeological remains discovered in Saudi Arabia. The anterior part of the palace has been converted into a museum with various items of pottery, gravestones, tools, coins, ancient Quranic manuscripts and relics from thousands of years.

All these were excavated in the Kingdom from sites such as Thaj, Al-Hejr and Synaia and date back to the dawn of Islam as well

as the Nabatean era, Medianite era all the way to Stone Age. The anterior building is also undeniably well kept in comparison to the rest of the palace with high ceilings and grand stairways.

The second floor is also directly accessible from the outside by a sloping driveway.

Interestingly, the entire palace was built by the Bin Laden Company.

At this point I was beginning to wonder if there was anything at all left from King Abdul Aziz’s era. That is when the vicecurator led us to a foyer where the King met foreign delegates for private conferences.

It boasts of pictures of King Abdul Aziz in the same room with some renowned foreign officials, the King’s walking stick, some of his political correspondence and his telephone. To the right of it is the King’s office which retains his actual desk and chairs. I couldn’t resist taking a picture of

Another section in the building displays traditional Saudi utensils, shoes, clothes, jewelry and arms. Once outside the anterior building we ventured towards the back.

Visible in that part of the palace are beautiful old wooden windows and doors, albeit decrepit, that lead to a labyrinth of dusty rooms and corridors. Gas lit lamps adorn the walls even today. Some painted glass windows are intact.

The recent paint is peeling off to reveal the former. Broken tiles are strewn around.

In the midst of all this the beauty of the tent-shaped balconies stands out. The vicecurator even pressed that these were tentshaped because the king desired a traditional desert abode in the city.

The posterior buildings were the royal family’s residence. I would have climbed up a staircase and walked along its vast open DESTINATION JEDDAH 47

corridors had it not been for lack of time, fear of collapsing floors and an even bigger fear of lurking bats.

Along the back corridor is a room with green doors that were padlocked. This is the historic room where the first oil contract was signed between King Abdul Aziz and the Standard Oil of California in 1933. Yup, this is where the deal was sealed. Since the room is absolutely bare it didn’t hurt that we couldn’t go inside.

In just 3 hours I had time travelled through the Stone Age to the 1930’s. Just before I walked out of the iron gates the vice-curator mentioned that this could be the last time I saw the gates in their original form as the development plans for Khuzam palace would begin soon.

Thankfully I saw the place in its semioriginal shape before any of the restoration plans had started. For a day, I was a lucky commoner in the historic Palace.

Jeddah was given a special treat at the BiCE at the Qasr Al-Sharq with a 10 day food festival flavored in a Venetian fashion. Guest Chef Fanco Luise from the celebrated and multi-award winning Aromi restaurant in Venice, dazzled guests with flavorful dishes and treats which Jeddah has never seen.

Speaking to a small gathering of VIP’s and media on Feb., 17, Luise said it was his first time in the Middle-East and was very pleased to have the chance to be here for the “La Serenissima - Taste of Venice” food festival.

“Venetian food and Middle-Eastern food both influence each other because of the early trade between the two cultures a long time ago.”

Luise was forged as one of the world’s best chefs through some of the best kitchens in Italy. From the five star hotels in Florence and where he started his career, to the threestar Michelin restaurant Antica Osteria Del Ponte in Milan. What he is probably best 50 DESTINATION JEDDAH

known for is his role as executive chef at the legendary Cip’s at the Hotel Cipriani in Venice as well as the opening of the Hotel Caruso in Ravello, Italy. During the food festival held at BICE, Luise put together a collection of Venetian dishes with Mediterranean influences like the: Parmesan fondue with violet aubergine caviar and bruschetta and truffles.

Every dish brought out of the bustling kitchen, where Luise coordinated meals and ingredients, were testaments to the Hilton dedication to quality and service at the highest standard.

As the midday sun pierces down on Jeddah, there is one place you can find some respite from the blistering heat. Nestled in the main atrium of Teatro Mall sits the sophisticated refuge of Teatro Lounge.

With the overhead dome giving everything a natural glow in addition to the surrounding walls, you feel transported to some place far more glamorous: the south of France or a luxury hotel in Italy. Teatro Lounge has a level of comfort not often seen in Jeddah’s restaurants.

As the chocolate fountain spins in the center of the restaurant waiters busily buzz around paying close attention to the clientele.

Surrounding the entire location is art by Saudi artists Mona Abdullah Al-Kassabi lending a “Motherhood” by Mona Abdullah Al-Kassabi certain artistic flare to the entire area.

The food itself is served in a way that tells you the chef cares both about taste as well as presentation. Wraps are chopped into slices and spiked with toothpicks giving an ordinary sandwich a more hors doeuvresish feel perfect for a work lunch while you punch keys into your laptop. Munch: cupcakes More than just

Push the white door open and you are instantly transported to a place where the smells and colors are out of this world. If Willy Wonka had a pet project outside of his chocolate factory, it would be Munch bakery on Arafat St. Bright pink, purple, blues and white, flood your senses coupled with the weathered floorboards Munch really has much more soul than any other bakery in town.

That soul is what CEO of Munch Bakery, Ibrahim Ashemimry said is the driving force behind the bakery. Conceived as an idea just three years ago, Munch was designed to become the “Rolex of the baking industry” in the Kingdom because of a perceived lack of places which catered to cake design, Ashemimry said.

“There weren’t the right sweets that we wanted to taste, like we did in the US and there was also a lack of quality and environment,” he said. “So we started the brand development from scratch, with the idea that we can show that we can produce and manufacture a brand extension as good anyone in the West. This is 100 percent Saudi-made quality.”

Quality is obviously something Ashemimry, his wife Myriam Ghandour, and business partner Princess Hala Mishari Saud Al-Saud are passionate about, and it shows on his face as he explains just how involved management is at ground zero of cake making.

Taking an approach to business not often seen in Saudi, Ashemimry said the entire operation is open-ended.

“There’s no distance between the customer and the people behind the idea. Usually in Saudi if you go to any business, the distance between you, the client, and the owners is so far away,” he said. “We wanted to kill that idea.”

Ma’asoob

A traditional Hijazi dish usually served at breakfast. It is usually more popular during Ramadan when families gather together to break their fast and can be made with a variety of flavors.

Ingredients

2 cups of flour 1 tsp of black seeds 2 tsp of oil 1 k banana ½ cup sugar 1 cup water 1 small can of double cream (Qeshta) 4 tsp of honey

Preparation Method: 1. Pour the flour, black seeds, oil and water into a large bowl. Mix well and divide the mixture in small pieces of dough. Flatten each piece of dough using rolling pin.

2. Have a pan ready, heated at medium temperature and with a little bit of oil. Cook the dough till it gets brown.

3. Mash the cooked dough with banana, sugar and honey. Stir vigorously until it gets soft.

4. Put the soft mixture in a flat plate and garnish the top with double cream (Qeshta) and banana slices.

Mystery Diner Tomato Tortilla Soup

I like it so much I put it on the new Manhattan menu, The flavors are very compimentary to those of the Arabian peninsula. Depending on how much garnish you want to add you can eat it as a soup or a meal in itself eaten with rice or any of the regions great flat breads. Bon Apetite!”

Ingredients

800 ml Tortilla Soup 60 gr Cheddar Cheese 200 gr grilled chicken breast 240 gr avocado 50 gr corn tortilla 10 gr coriander 50 ml olive oil 300 gr tomato 100 gr sour cream

Preparation Method:

1. Heat the oil in a large pot and add the

chopped tortillas and saute a few minutes

2. Add the garlic and cook with the tortillas till they become soft

3. Add the onions and contnue to cook all together till onions become soft and clear

4. Add the tomato paste, cumin, chili powder, coriander and bayleaf and stir all together 5. Add the whole peeled tomatoes and let all

come to a boil

6. Add the chicken stock and bring to a boil, reduce heat and leave to simmer 10 minutes 7. Puree the soup in a blender and pass through a course strainer

Trewind:

Making use of Jeddah’s trash

Every year Saudi Arabia produces over 50,000 tons of waste, close to half of that can be recycled. Trewind wants to make that happen.

Low landfill fees make dumping cheaper, and a low-level of public awareness have contributed to the Kingdom-wide lack of recyclable programs. Trewind has taken up the challenge to create a formula for a stand-alone sustainable industry.

Jeddah produces over 6 billion packs of Tetra Pak materials each year and exports to the region and around the world. Gulf countries are among the world’s highest consumers of beverage cartons and until last year there was not a single facility in the region dedicated to recycling this material. That is why Trewind has joined forces with Tetra Pak to establish the factory.

Mohamed Masoud, project manager for Trewind, said the program focuses on recyling Tetra Pak materials only. “We...used a newly developed technology that involves grinding the packages and mixing them with certain types of plastic and other additives so that they can be extruded into a wood substitute material.” He said the process will start in May. The beverage cartons are recycled in Jeddah’s industrial zone and other materials are taken to a sorting facility where other factories can purchase the different materials.

Gulf Environment Forum: A world of Green right in Jeddah

Held at the Jeddah Hilton eco-professionals from around the world were in town to discuss sustainability and environment protection in regards to food, water and energy preservation for the Gulf Environment Forum.

“We need to strike a balance in the use of techniques and technologies for using our energy, water and food resources in the interest of long-term sustainability of the environment,” said Dominique Pajot, vice president marketing and technique, Schlumberger Water and Carbon Services, during panel discussion.

Over 50 companies were represented at the forum organized by the Presidency of Meteorology and Environment. In its foreword to the forum literature, the PME stated that it «thinks globally and (acts) locally towards sustainable development, advocating public-private partnerships for the continued growth of the Kingdom.» The forum is a direct synthesis of this ideology as many of these companies form the front line in environmental protection.

In an Arab News brief, Saad Al-Mahlafi, deputy for PME called for a more organized effort among all official and private sector agencies to protect the environment.

Currently Trewind, have collection points at Mawakib Al-Ajr as well as several schools and compounds and plans are being made to set up points in supermarkets. “I hope people will start (becoming) more aware and set it as a principle in their daily lives and pass the habit on to their children. It is after all charity and taking care of our precious Jeddah is a social responsibility,” Masoud said.

The melting pot of Jeddah knows few cultural and geographic boundaries. The city has always belonged to its inhabitants and to the global community at large; nurturing a unique tradition of hospitality and tolerance.

Even Europeans hold a place of pride within the city’s memory. The Danish traveler Carsten Niebuhr came to Jeddah in 1762 to compare the differences in culture of the Jeddah population to the Arabs of Egypt. He noted that the warm welcome he received in Jeddah was unlike his previous experiences in Egypt. “[I] met the most lovable people [here]. For the first time, I was able to visit coffee shops and markets without facing any hostility whatsoever.” The people of Jeddah, according to Niebuhr, did not find the presence of Europeans offensive, which was vastly different from his experiences in other parts of the Arab World.

Foreigners in Jeddah exist within several specific spheres – diplomacy or trade, among others. However, unlike diplomatic residents of Jeddah, foreign traders engaged themselves even further into the Jeddahwi community, incorporating the habits of the people with their own.

The Khawaja (foreigner) Lenny was one of the most famous European traders to live in Jeddah.

His full name was Lenny Hristo Dolo A.K.A “Khawaja Lenny”. Dolo enjoyed the full benefits of Jeddah citizenship and was well known for his sense of humor and social charm.

The Dolo family were the first in Jeddah to open a gourmet grocery, selling imported luxury foods to the masses. For the first time, Jeddahwis were able to enjoy caviar, numerous varieties of olives, meats, and cheeses. The shop occupied a central 88 DESTINATION JEDDAH

position of trade in the area and in the Hijazi tradition of calling grocery stores banks, was known as “Bank of Lenny”.

Lenny was able to appeal to the locals through his charm and sense of humor. He was said to be fluent in Arabic and blended in seamlessly with the local culture.

Eventually, Lenny married the daughter of an Jewish Italian fabric merchant When it was discovered that Lenny had married the girl without her father’s consent, the merchant sold his goods and left the city.

Lenny was able to blend into the neighborhood due to his deep respect for the culture and religion of the area. It was said that he fasted during the holy month of Ramadan along with the Muslims and closed his shop during prayer times. He was known for being considerate of local sensitivities and was always willing to listen.

In 1961, Khawaja Lenny sold his shop for a hefty sum at the time (SR100,000) and left for Cyprus where he rented out residential suites.

Lenny felt so alienated in his new surroundings that he returned to Jeddah in 1968, seeking to regain his former status as a trader. Sadly, he was unable to do so and left Jeddah for the last time, disappointed in his failure.

Khawaja Lenny was one of the last Khawajas in Jeddah who had a true loyalty to the city and it’s people and hopefully he will be remembered.

‫لعل جدة‪ ،‬في اختراقها لكل حواجز احمللية الض ّيقة‪ ،‬تثبت دوم ًا أنها تنتمي‬ ‫للعالم الفسيح‪ ..‬هي عريقة في ترحيبها وانفتاحها على اآلخر‪ ،‬وفي قدرتها‬ ‫على صهر كل من يعيش فيها في بوتقتها احلضارية‪.‬‬ ‫حتى حشود األوروبيني كان لهم موقع ًا في ذاكرة هذه املدينة ووجدانها‪...‬‬ ‫الرحالة الدمناركي كارسنت نايبور الذي مكث في جدة ستة أسابيع من‬ ‫كان ّ‬ ‫عام ‪1762‬م‪ ،‬قد قارب الفروقات احلضارية بني أهل جدة مع عرب مصر‬ ‫التي قدم منها مع باقي أفراد بعثته االستكشافية العلمية‪ ،‬منتهي ًا الى غياب‬ ‫نظرة العداء التي كانوا قد تلقوها في مصر‪ ،‬فهم هنا في جدة خالف ًا ملصر؛‬ ‫قد “التقوا بشعب ودود‪ ،‬استطاعوا ألول مرة أن يزوروا أماكن شرب القهوة‬ ‫واألسواق‪ ،‬من دون مواجهة أي ازعاج أو مضايقة أي ًا كانت”‪ .‬فأهل جدة‬ ‫–بحسب نايبور‪ -‬ال يجدون في وجود األوروبيني بينهم اهانة لهم‪.‬‬ ‫ثمة إيطاليني ويونايني عدة استطونوا داخل املدينة القدمي‪ ،‬تدفق تيار‬ ‫ال‬ ‫هجرتهم الى جدة مع معاهدة التجارة عام ‪1838‬م التي حملت تسهي ً‬ ‫ُجمركي ًا لدخول السلع األجنبية للداخل العثماني‪ ..‬كانت دكاكينهم‬ ‫السبح التي‬ ‫ومتاجرهم تتناثر على جنبات أسواق جدة العتيقة؛ يبيعون ُ‬ ‫تُصنع في ايطاليا‪ ،‬أو يتاجرون في األقمشة‪ ،‬وبيع املشروبات ومواد التموين‪.‬‬ ‫لم يزاحمهم سوى البيوتات التجارية األجنبية‪ ،‬مثل شركة “جالتلي هنكي‬ ‫وشركاه”؛ البيت اإلجنليزي التجاري العريق‪ ،‬الذي كان ميلكه اخلواجة‬ ‫اإلجنليزي ِهنكي وكان مقره إلى جانب ِ‬ ‫الكنداسة القدمية إلى جانب مسجد‬ ‫الباشا‪ ،‬و”سودان ليم ِتد” الشركة البريطانية العمالقة التي كان مق ّرها‬ ‫الرئيسي في بورت سودان وفرعها في جدة‪ ،‬وشركة “الزاريني” اإليطالية‪،‬‬ ‫و”الشركةاخلديويةاملصرية”‪،‬و”الشركةالشرقية”التيأسسهاسانتجونفلبي‪.‬‬ ‫وخالف ًا للدبلوماسيني املقيمني في جدة‪ ،‬كان التجار من األجانب ينخرطون‬ ‫في املجتمع اجلداوي‪ ،‬يبثون قيمهم في نسيجه‪ ،‬ويتشربون طباع وعادات‬ ‫أهله‪.‬‬ ‫كان خواجة ينّي‪ ،‬أشهر أؤلئك “األوروبيون اجلدادوة”‪ ،‬وأكثرهم حضوراً‬ ‫في ذاكرة املدينة ووجدان أهلها‪ ..‬حلرارة عالقاته الشخصية باألهالي‪ ،‬ورمبا‬ ‫لقرب عهد الناس به‪.‬‬ ‫اسمه الكامل‪ :‬يني خريستو دولو‪ ،‬وشهرته الشعبية‪“ :‬خواجة يني”‪ ..‬كان‬ ‫مواطن ًا جداوي ًا يتمتع بكامل مزايا املواطنَة‪ ،‬معروف ُ‬ ‫بالظرف وحسن املَعشر‬ ‫والتداخل الوثيق مع احملليني‪ -‬بل هو ذاته كان مبثابة أحد وجهاء املدينة!‬ ‫وأسرة “دولو”‪ ،‬عائلة مسيحية أرثذوكسية‪ُ ،‬مستعرِبة من أصل اغريقي‪،‬‬ ‫كانت تقيم في جدة منذ العهد العثماني‪ ،‬استوطنتها قادمة من جزيرة‬ ‫ُقبرص اليونانية‪ .‬كان عمه اكيليا ( ُقسطنطني) يني دولو‪ُ ،‬مستشاراً سياسي ًا‬ ‫بارزا لدى الشريف حسني بن علي‪ ،‬يباش ُر أعما ًال دبلوماسية رفيعة أشبه‬ ‫‪DESTINATION JEDDAH 89‬‬

‫بوظيفة الوزير املف ّوض‪ ،‬وكان قبلها قد ِ‬ ‫نشط في ثورة العرب ضد التغ ّلب‬ ‫التركي‪ .‬وقد ذكر الصحافي األمريكي‪/‬اللبناني أمني الريحاني‪ ،‬الذي أتى‬ ‫جدة من نيويورك في فبراير ‪ ،1922‬أن الشريف أرسل معه‪ُ ،‬قسطنني يني‬ ‫(عم خواجة يني)‪ ،‬في رحلته الى اليمن‪ ،‬التي و ّثق تفاصيلها في كتابه‬ ‫الشهير (ملوك العرب)‪ ،‬وذكر من مفارقاتها‪ :‬أنه هو العربي األصل كان‬ ‫“في ثياب افرجنية‪ ،‬وعقال‪ ،‬ويحمل جوازاً أمريكياً‪ ،‬فيما قسطنطني ينّي‬ ‫(اليوناني األصل) كان بدوره في ثوب مالزم في اجليش احلجازي‪ ،‬يحمل‬ ‫جوازاً حجازياً”!‬ ‫ولعائلة دولو‪ ،‬ريادة جتارية في جدة‪ .‬هي أول عائلة تفتح متجراً عصري ًا‬ ‫أنيق ًا للمواد الغذائية املستوردة في جدة‪ ،‬منذ ثالثينات القرن املاضي‪..‬‬ ‫جتد فيه –ألول مرة‪ -‬اجلنب الرومي‪ ،‬والزيتون بأنواعه‪ ،‬واللحم والسمك‬ ‫املجفف‪ ،‬وأنواع املربى الفاخر‪ ،‬والكافيار‪ ،‬والزيوت االيطالية‪ ،‬وباقي املنتجات‬ ‫“املستوردة”!‬ ‫كان دكان خواجة ينّي يحتل موقع ُا مركزي ًا في شارع قابل التجاري‪ ،‬و ُيعرف‬ ‫بإسم‪“ :‬بنك يني”‪ ..‬حيث كانت البقاالت في مدن احلجاز تُسمى بإسم‬ ‫(بنك)؛ وفي جدة كان من بقاالت احملليني؛ “بنك صادق دخيل” و”بنك‬ ‫عبداهلل خُ ضري”‪.‬‬ ‫اعتبره كاتب جدة األول‪ ،‬محمد صادق دياب‪ ،‬بأنه كان ُجزءا من إيقاع‬ ‫شارع “قابل” أهم شوارع جدة‪ ،‬حيث كان صوته ال يكف عن الضجيج في‬ ‫السوق ممازحا املارة والزبائن‪ ..‬فهو “استطاع اقتحام عاملهم بظرفه وخفة ظله‪،‬‬ ‫ولم يكن يتردد في إهداء كبار السن منهم بعض العقاقير اليونانية املُنشطة‪،‬‬ ‫فيعبرون في الصباح عن امتنانهم له بابتسامات لها معانيها اخلاصة‪ ،‬ولكنه‬ ‫شهر بهم ممازحا إذا ما تنكر أحدهم خلدماته”‪.‬‬ ‫لم يلبث أن ُي ّ‬ ‫كان خلواجة ينّي حضوره الطاغ على مستوى مجتمع جدة‪ .‬لعل في‬ ‫سبب في ارتباطه الوثيق باملدينة والى‬ ‫حضوره كجيل ثاني لعائلة مهاجرة‪ُ ،‬‬ ‫حميمية عالقته بأهلها‪ .‬لقد كان يتواجد بشكل يومي في مركاز مسجد‬ ‫عكاش الى جانب وجهاء وتجُ ار البلد‪ ..‬حيث يجيد العربية باللكنة اليونانية‬ ‫املميزة‪.‬‬ ‫وتزوج ينّي‪ ،‬من فتاة ايطالية يهودية كانت تقيم مع والدها في جدة‪ .‬تقول‬ ‫الرواية أن ابنة “خواجة ماركو”‪ ،‬التاجر االيطالي اليهودي‪ ،‬الذي كان ميلك‬ ‫متجراً لبيع األقمشة والطرابيش‪ ،‬داخل سوق القصبة املتفرع من السوق‬ ‫الكبير‪ ،‬تزوجت من “خواجة يني” دون رضا والدها‪ ،‬الذي سخط من تلك‬ ‫الزيجة‪ ،‬الختالف ديانة ينّي‪ ،‬فص ّفى بضاعته‪ ،‬وهاجر عن املدينة يجرجر‬ ‫أذيال اخليبة‪.‬‬ ‫وكان “ينّي” على درجة كبيرة من مراعاة مشاعر املسلمني الدينية‪ ،‬اذ‬ ‫كان يصوم رمضان‪ ،‬ويغادر متجره فور أن يتعالى األذان‪ ..‬كان يشارك‬ ‫املدينة أفراحها‪ ،‬ويقتسم همومها‪ ..‬وحني همت التركترات لتزيل بعض‬ ‫بيوت قصبة الهنود لتشق طريق ًا سريع ًا في جدة‪ ،‬حزن خواجة يني على‬ ‫هذا التفريط املجانّي في تراث املدينة العمراني وذاكرتها احلضارية‪ِ .‬ق ّلة من‬ ‫األهالي أدرك سبب خيبته حينها!‬ ‫وفي عام ‪ ،1961‬باع خواجة ينّي ُدكانه الى صيرفي شهير مببلغ ضخم‬ ‫حينها‪ ،‬جتاوز املائة ألف ريال‪ ،‬وغادر حزين ًا الى قبرص‪ ،‬التي افتتح فيها‬ ‫(لوكندة) صغيرة‪ .‬ما لبث أن شعر فيها بالغربة‪ ،‬حيث عاد الى جدة من‬ ‫جديد‪ ،‬مطلع عام ‪ُ ،1968‬محاو ًال اعادة حظه في التجارة‪ ،‬اال أنه أخفق في‬ ‫ذلك‪ ،‬حتى انطوى على نفسه‪ ،‬ورحل حزين ًا في صمت‪.‬‬ ‫لعل خواجة ينّي يعد بذلك آخر خواجات جدة‪ ،‬باملعنى الرومانسي واملفهوم‬ ‫العضوي ِ‬ ‫الفعلي‪.‬‬
