REVITALIZING MADIKERI

Urban design project in Madikeri with five students collaborating on a shared vision. Each student selects one of eight sites to develop cohesive design proposals, integrating individual concepts into a unified urban vision that enhances the city’s aesthetic, functionality, and sustainability.

Revitalisation of Madikeri's habitat to encompass the tangible and intangible aspects, to regenerate a sensory environment for residents and visitors

TANGIBL

Since the site is raising up, inhabitants will not feel vulnerable to eye -level pedestrian and vehicular traffic and is suitable to locate residences with uninterrupted lines of sight.

Due to the site's quality as an existing landmark and holy space underground, it provides to sensitively connect the past and present, which influences and educates people.

The site was an important node not defined properly and the interconnection between levels was missing, by connecting which the commuting can be at ease between commercial tourist and residents

The "eat" programme works well for the location because it is in a busy business area, which brings more people into the area. It is easier for people to walk around on flat territory.

A site strategically located at a prime destination, attracting a steady stream of visitors and serving as a welcoming and accessible hub for the community.

Integrating seating along the pedestrian pathway using the retaining wall offers a functional and aesthetic solution. It provides rest areas for pedestrians while maximizing space efficiency. This architectural approach enhances the urban environment, encourages social interaction

STREET LIGHT Street light harnesses solar energy to power the light, providing ecofriendly illumination. It also integrates USB charging ports for convenient device charging. The seating feature offers comfort to pedestrians, while the WiFi connectivity enhances connectivity and access to information in public spaces.

Underground infrastructure powers our urban landscapes, providing essential services seamlessly. Electric cables pulse with energy, lighting up our cities, while gas pipelines fuel homes and businesses. The use of dustbins plays a critical role in maintaining cleanliness, preventing pollution, and enhancing the overall aesthetics and livability

The urban kiosk integrates essential elements for pedestrian comfort and sustainability. It features ample seating, providing a resting spot for weary pedestrians. Additionally, it offers drinking water facilities, promoting hydration and reducing plastic waste. The presence of dustbins ensures proper waste disposal, maintaining cleanliness. Furthermore, the kiosk includes EV charging points, supporting the transition to electric vehicles and fostering eco-friendly transportation.

WEAVING CENTER

The typology with which we were dealing was a industry. Through the semester we understood how silk weaving works mainly in Kanchipurum (since our site was based in Kanchipuram) and designed a industry for the weavers, to bring them together under one roof which orelse would be taking place in their individual houses. The aim was to create a place comfortable for these weavers to work and a sustainable building for future.

- The intent behind the design was to involve public and make the building accessible to the public. The first step involved in this was done by connecting the two roads and creating a pedestrian - Since Kanchipuram is located in hot and humid zone, maximum air circulation is very important and shading devices appropriate to keep the harsh sun out - thermal comfort. CULINARY INSTITUTE

The client is a third-generation farming family, who passed out from Centre For Food, Durham College, Canada and wants to build an institution from nature’s point of view. The program is a cooking school and would be based on “field-to-fork concept”. It will include harvest, storage, processing, packaging, sale and consumption of food, with a strong focus on the production of local food for local consumers.

CULTURAL CENTER

The vision of development at any waterfront is rooted in the everyday life and the local usage of space. The use of leisure as an appropriate public use of the waterfront, giving rise to a rich narrative of spatial experience of built architecture with a reference to the solemn flow of the river. And to give back to the people of the city.

The studio is a typology based design while designing in the public domain. The primary aim of the semester will be to resolve the given public nature of the building design that would serve the community.

The project will look at designing a Cultural Centre, designed to utilize covered, open spaces and interface to the river.

INTERIOR DESIGN RE - IMAGINING THE SPACES

The task was to re - design the existing exhibition, lobby in the campus so as to articulate the spaces better. The girls room to be converted into a pantry serving the students/faculty and the parents visiting the campus.

INTENT

The aim was to match with the language of the campus itself - material, colour palette, grid, geometry.

The whole documentation included study of streets, temples, ghats, museum, library, historical monuments like Gumbaz, Dariya Daulat Bagh, Jumma Masjid, Srirangapatna

2. KANCHIPURAM CITY FABRIC

SEM 07 I 4TH YEAR

The intent was to document and understand the fabric of the heritage city which is famous for its sarees.

The whole documentation included study of the streets, temples, houses - how weaving and the residential spaces work hand in hand, dyeing and drying spaces.

Srirangapatna Ghat – Walk Through

The gopuram faces towards east There are three orthogonal entrance of the Gopuram The road in front is 315m Ranganathaswamy park in the eastern side of temple is covered shops All the stalls are of almost same height The path towards circle is intimate due to presence of the stalls along the path

Srirangapatna Ghat is one of the biggest ghats in the town It is a part of Uttara Kaveri and flows towards the East

The Ghat is connected to the town in an interesting way – through a bridge over the river’s mushy valley One doesn’t realise the vastness of the river from the bridge The Ghat and the river become an element of surprise, visually, at the end of the bridge

From one end of the bridge is a series of steps leading down and opening up to the river On these simple series of steps, a variety of activities take place This sort of opening towards the river, welcomes the people into the ghat, making it a public space for all

As one walks down, to the left are a couple of kattes and trees where auspicious ceremonies take place People bathe in the holy river, light diyas and offer flowers to river goddess Kaveri On the other side of the entrance is mostly a resting space with pavilions and bigger steps

Leading to the living, dining and kitchen which becomes semi private, opening up to a backyard which can be shared by few houses. All the bedrooms are shifted to the next floor making it the most private realm.
