eam Suntory, a world leader in premium spirits, unveiled strong results for the year 2022, with net sales up 10.5% year on year, representing 24% growth versus the pre-pandemic year of 2019. Premium brands grew 15% in 2022, and now represent more than half of the company’s Full Bottle Spirits sales for the first time ever.

Ready-to Drink (RTD) brand sales grew 16% driven by performance in Japan, Australia and US. Although being impermeable and fantastic for storing beverages, they require inferno-like heat to make and an immense amount of fuel and packaging to be shipped.

However, PET (Polyethylene Terephthalate) is made of 100% recyclable plastic and is clear, strong, and lightweight.

Cellulose-Fibre Material Paper Bottles Using layers of recycled paperboards fused with waterbased glue to create a bottle, the cellulose-fibre bottles are 94% chemical-free and 5 times lighter than a glass bottle. It requires less fuel to shop and can survive a 5-foot drop without breaking.

RTDs (Ready-To-Drink) or Canned Beverages Aluminium beverage cans are the most recyclable drinks pack in the world and with an average recycling rate of 69%, they can be endlessly recycled without any loss of quality.

The beverage can is already wellpositioned in the beverage industry and is a good initiative. Due to their size and weight, they effectively reduce the CO2 emissions during transportation, encourage trials due to their smaller size, and are also a portable alternative for consumers. However, producing aluminium alloy also releases harmful greenhouse gasses into the atmosphere.

They can help combat many modern-day lifestyle disorders due to their high quantities of fibre, vitamins, minerals, phytochemicals and antioxidants.

Important amino acids enhance millet's nutritional value. Millets contain several bioactive principles that have been demonstrated to lessen the risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, aging, and even cancer.

This article looks at the potential health benefits of millet.

Millets are natural grains of many nations, including India, and may be used as an alternative staple food to address concerns such as water shortages, desertification, global warming, and carbon footprint management. Millets are natural foods for diabetes because they are a good source of the amino acid leucine, a carbohydrate that digests slowly, and minerals that reduce the sharp rise in postprandial glucose levels. Studies done in vitro have shown that millets are excellent at reducing blood sugar levels.

Additionally, in vivo investigations have shown that millet-based meals have hypoglycemic effects with intervention.

Impact of Heart Disease The risk of cardiac diseases rises dramatically as NIDDM risk rises. In terms of the likelihood of developing heart disease, lowdensity lipoprotein (LDL) and

high-density lipoprotein (HDL) have opposing effects. As a result, every 1 mg/dL increase in LDL increases the risk of heart disease by 2%, while every 1 mg/dL increase in HDL reduces the risk of heart disease by 2-3%. Triglycerides are another element that raises the risk of developing heart conditions because there is a long-standing link between having high triglyceride levels and an increased risk of heart conditions. The best method of preventing heart disease is to lower LDL cholesterol, according to research. Therefore, a diet that lowers LDL should be chosen to lower the risk of cardiac problems.

Impact of Millets on Cancer As anti-nutrients that reduce the incidence of colon and breast cancer

in animals, millet grains include phenolic components like phenolic acids, flavonoids, and tannins.

Fibroin-modulator-binding protein (FMBP), a novel 35kD protein isolated from foxtail millet, was shown in an in-vivo study to inhibit the growth of colon cancer cells by causing GI phase arrest and the loss of mitochondrial transmembrane potential, which causes colon cancer cells to undergo apoptosis (programmed cell death) through the activation of caspase.

he Indian food industry is growing with a higher rate , increasing its contribution to the world food trade every year. In India, the food sector has emerged as a high-growth and high-profit sector due to its immense potential for value addition, particularly within the food processing industry.

Food is a basic necessity and requirement of everyone without any doubt; therefore the demands are always going to be high.

There are many big companies already actively involved in the food processing industry and the government is playing a vital role in promoting it. Many factors are shaping and affecting the growth of such industries. Investors are more attracted to the food processing industry, foreseeing its high potential and wider customer base.

The Indian food processing industry is currently one of the largest in the nation in terms of growth, production, consumption and exports.

The industry produces and manufactures several food products such as, fruits, vegetables, spices, milk and milk products, alcoholic beverages, plantations grains meat, poultry, fisheries. It also manufactures cocoa products and chocolates, confectionery, mineral water, soya-based items and high-protein foods. Since the liberalisation in August 1991, the government proposed and accepted

Export of APEDA products stood at US$7.4 billion as of April-June 2022, up 31% compared with US$.7 billion over the same period last fiscal, according to the Directorate General of Commercial Intelligence

and Statistics. Furthermore, exports of processed fruits and vegetables grew by 59.1%; cereals and miscellaneous processed items grew by 37.66%; meat, dairy and poultry products grew by 9.5%; basmati rice grew by 25.5%; non-basmati rice grew by 5%; and miscellaneous products grew by 50% (Source: APEDA) The food sector is currently undergoing a transition in India.

The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) forecasts that the sector will grow at a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 3% between 2022 and 2030.

he Food Safety and Standards Authority of India has specified a comprehensive group standard for millets vide Food Safety and Standards (Food Products Standards and Food Additives), Second Amendment Regulations, 2023 notified in the Gazette of India and the same will be enforced w.e.f September 1, 2023.

FSSAI FURTHER EXTENDS DEADLINE FOR ORDER ON CERT ACCOMPANYING IMPORTED FOOD

DAIRY ALTERNATIVES SEEM TO BE HEADING NORTHWARDS

lant-based meats (i.e., products which have the properties of animal-based items but are sourced purely from plants) and plant-based dairy products (i.e., products using plant-based alternatives to derive the whole range of dairy products from milk, yogurt, cheese, paneer, and so on) have been the rage all across – particularly the Western world over the last couple of years.

India was not far behind; we, Indians, have been introduced to this category of food products by a number of startups that entered this arena. A lot of influence was added using Bollywood and cricket stars, who have taken up promoting this category to the masses. In addition, major QSR brand Dominos

Thus, what we can infer is that the food service channel is continuing its efforts to introduce the consumer to different plant-based options, with possibly a large number of trials being initiated. Notably, any major food trend initially starts off first in the out-of-home setting and then only gravitates inwards into the house kitchen or refrigerator.

Plant-based meat is made from proteins isolated from plant sources, including soy and peas, and dairy-product alternatives are derived primarily from oats, almonds, rice, and soy. Mimicking the taste and texture of what meat products actually taste like requires a whole lot of scientific engineering, processing, the addition of taste-maskers and enhancers, a whole range of chemical additives, colour, flavour, tasteenhancers and so on.

However, as the struggles of plantbased meat continue, the situation with regard to plant-based dairy alternatives seems to be gaining traction across the world, including India. In US market, plant-based alternatives are already about 16% of total retail milk sales. Cheese and other plant-based products are continuing to show healthy growth and acceptance.

Even in India, we have witnessed a number of startups in the alternative dairy category offering a range of products. Unlike plant-based

meats, several plant-based milks seem to have a much cleaner label, and with consumers aware of their lactose intolerances, they seem to prefer alternatives to milk which are derived from animals.

However, the price premium issue still needs to be addressed. In fact, I have now come across an “Oatsbased fresh milk” option available in Bangalore, which is at a nominal premium to fresh organic cow milk and is a relatively clean label. This is a good start to addressing the price premium of plant-based alternatives.

The question of what is next for this industry and category arises. Being another food product with aspirations of becoming mainstream, marketers would first need to tackle the issue of price, taste, and health in equal measure. Consumers will not pay a premium for a product that delivers inferior taste or texture or nutrition

parameters unless it is ordered by the doctor.

Clearly, the quality of products in the market is getting better every day and with growing scale and advancement in technology, the price issue could potentially be addressed.

Furthermore, with QSRs pricing their plant-based options on par with the real meat-based options, this would help in generating trials and building traction for the category.

Dairy alternatives, however, seem to be heading northwards and with more competitive pricing, should only see better traction.

The challenge the category faces is to improve taste, keep the labels clean, and keep the pricing attractive for consumers to adopt. A tall challenge indeed, but very hopeful with extraordinary talent working on these fronts and the billions of dollars flowing into this category.n

Medium to high-income consumers prefer KitKat and Loaker. Also, Metallic packaging of chocolate has been prioritised than any other packaging.

Hence, producers can give variety and changes on metallic packaging of their products. he dietary recommendations have focused on balancing calorie intake and decreasing fat content for decades.

But we fail to understand that fat is one of the three essential macronutrients the body needs, along with carbohydrates and proteins.

The cornerstone of most dietary recommendations for lowering the cardiovascular disease (CVD), risk has been based on reducing the amount of saturated fat in the diet.

A balanced diet should include healthful monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats which include omega-3 (alpha-linolenic) and omega-6 (linoleic) fatty acids. The inclusion of these healthful fats in one’s daily meal not only creates a sense of fullness, but slows down the digestion of carbohydrates, and adds flavour to food.

They assist in the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins, providing essential fatty acids and protection of organs. Some fatty acids also maintain blood lipid balance, better immune functions, and better brain functioning. Studies have shown that both the quantity and the quality of fat have an impact on the health of an individual. As per the ICMR-NIN report, adults having a sedentary lifestyle should consume about 25 g of visible fat, while individuals doing physical work need 30 - 40g of visible fat accounting for 15-30% of the diet.
