SAARC Revival What is SAARC?  SAARC stands for South Asian Association For Regional Co-operation.  SAARC founded in Dhaka on 8 Dec,1985 is dedicated to economic, technological, social, and cultural development emphasizing collective self-reliance.  Its seven founding members 1. Bangladesh, 2. Bhutan, 3. India, 4. The Maldives, 5. Nepal, 6. Pakistan, 7. Sri Lanka, 8. Afghanistan has joined the organization in 2007.  Head Quarters are in Kathmandu, Nepal.  Total number of countries: Eight.  Current Secretary General: Amjad Hussain B Sial.

Why in News?

Srilanka’s Former PM Ranil Wickremsinghe in his keynote address at the ‘huddle’,a two day thought conclave organized by hindu in Bengaluru said :  Postponement of the Kathmandu SAARC Summit in 2017 due to heightened tensions between India and Pakistan had brought the regional grouping “to a standstill”.  Successful regional integration both economic and security depends on SAARC becoming fully functional at the highest levels  BIMSTEC is not a substitute for SAARC  Proposed an ‘Economic Integration Road Map (EIRM)’ : a “subregion”, consisting of the five southern States of India, Sri Lanka (Population of 300 million people and a combined GDP of over $500 billion)

M M Wildlife to be Tiger Reserve Soon  Malai Mahadeshwara Wildlife Sanctuary or Male Mahadeshwara Wildlife Sanctuary is a protected Wildlife sanctuary in the Eastern Ghats and is located in the state of Karnataka in India.  It is named after the presiding deity "Lord Male Mahadeshwara" of the famed Malai Mahadeshwara Hills Temple located within the sanctuary.

Why in News?

M M Hills wildlife sanctuary will be the 51st tiger reserve in the country  Home to leopards, dholes and sloth bears,Grizzled giant squirrels and many more will soon get the status of a tiger reserve, the sixth one in the state and the 51st in the country.

Malnad Giddar Research Center to come up :  Malnad Gidda is also known as “Gidda”, “Uradana” and “Varshagandhi”. “Malnad” means a hilly region and “Gidda” means small or dwarf.  They play a major role in the rural economy of this region by providing milk, manure and draft power with negligible inputs. They are well adapted to the local agro-ecological systems of Western Ghats.  National Bureau of Genetic Resources (NBGR) of Indian Council of agricultural research(ICAR) recognized as a registered breed variety of the country.

The Department of Animal Husbandry will establish a centre dedicated for research on Malnad Gidda, the zero-maintenance dwarf variety of cattle endemic to Malnad region, in Andavalli village in Sorab taluk of Shivamogga district.

Ramnath Kovind appreciation for SC as “PRO-ACTIVE” and “PROGRESSIVE” SC : Supreme Court  The Supreme Court of India is the highest judicial court under the Constitution of India, the highest constitutional court, with the power of judicial review.  Consisting of the Chief Justice of India and a maximum of 34 judges, it has extensive powers in the form of original, appellate and advisory jurisdictions. It is regarded as the most powerful public institution in India.

 President Ramnath Kovind praised the judiciary for pursuing the “cherished goal of gender justice” and appreciated the Supreme Court for being always “pro-active and progressive”.  He said “From issuing guidelines for preventing sexual harassment at the workplace two decades ago to providing directives for granting equal status to women in the Army this month, the Supreme Court of India has led a progressive social transformation”.
