28 DIVO NOVEMBRO / DEZEMBRO 2015

‘I tried to evoke the fact that almost every genre of white music on the American continent contains vestiges of African culture at its roots’, explained Argentine pianist Juan Carlos Cacérès, one of the pioneers in the search for the African roots of tango, at the beginning of the documentary. Tango Negro – The African Roots of the Tango, 2013, seeks out the beginnings of the dance that is thought to be the epitome of Argentinian dance culture. Dom Pedro, together with Juan Carlos Cacérès and Don Fadel, go back to the waves of African slaves who were carried to South America. It is estimated that 12 million slaves were brought to Latin America. Although there are hardly any black people in Argentina today, their heritage has remained and the Candombe traditions have evolved over the generations and given birth to the Tango. ‘In the Congo, tango is the sun; tango is time and it’s space,’ Don Fadel tells us as he explains the origin of the Congole-

se words “ntango” that named the dance. It’s a dance that was no more than a reflection of the behaviour of the slaves as has been portrayed in several paintings from the period, in which people would dance with their navels pressed together, just as happens with other African dances such as Kizomba. According to journalist Jorge Forbes, the milango tango, with its African, particularly Congolese, associations, was not originally highly regarded in Argentina. However, just as the Congo people had travelled to arrive in the Americas aboard slave ships, so did the dance travel, in this case, to Europe. In France, Parisians fell in love with the Tango and the dance experienced a resurgence of popularity in Argentina due to the stamp of European approval and Latin origin. On a trip that links Buenos Aires to Montevideo and that accompanies musicians and Tango dancers through Latin America, Dom Pedro shows us that African culture has been spread all over the world, anywhere where there are drums.

CINEMA

Dom Pedro is an Angolan film director. He graduated from film school in Paris in 1980 and since then he has been working, mostly, on documentaries. Black Tango The African Roots of the Tango, was released in 2013, and it premiered at the UNESCO Paris headquarters after the dance was named an example of Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO.

Marcelino Sambé JO A NA T E IXE IRA

BILL COOP ER / AN DR EJ USP EN SKI

ERA UMA VEZ UM JOVEM QUE SENTIA TUDO À SUA VOLTA COM AS PONTAS DOS DEDOS DOS PÉS. DE UM BAIRRO SOCIAL NOS ARREDORES DE LISBOA PARA OS PALCOS DE LONDRES FOI UM SALTO EM PIRUETA QUE LHE TROCOU AS VOLTAS ÀS SAPATILHAS E O FEZ VER O MUNDO EM PONTAS. NO AUGE DA SUA JUVENTUDE, MARCELINO SAMBÉ LEVA A VIDA A DANÇAR.

ONCE UPON A TIME THERE WAS A YOUNG MAN WHO FELT HIS WAY AROUND ON TIPTOE. FROM A POOR NEIGHBOURHOOD ON THE OUTSKIRTS OF LISBON ALL THE WAY TO THE LONDON OF STAGE WAS BUT A JUMP AND A PIROUETTE. HIS BAL LET SLIPPERS OPENED THE WORLD UP TO HIM, ON THE POINT OF HIS TOES. IN THE PRIME OF HIS YOUTH, MAR CELINO SAMBÉ SPENDS HIS LIFE DANCING.

DANCE

He was six years old when the love of dance took hold of his body. In the Alto da Loba neighbourhood in Paço de Arcos, the exotic steps of the African immigrant dance influenced him from a young age. Marcelino was the son of a father from Guinea-Bissau and he grew up listening to kuduro, kizomba and funaná, incorporating the energy and sensuality of these dances into his identity as a dancer. His talent was spotted at a community dance troupe and he was 9 years old when he auditioned to join the National Conservatory’s School of Dance where he first came into contact with classical dance. Its elegance and timelessness is still dear to him, as he confessed his hope that “someday ballet will come back into style as it used to be”, instead of being a preserve “of the elite that is not accessible to all”. His dream of being a professional

H

ballet dancer took him off from Lisbon to London when he was just 16 years old. His feet changed country, changed language and culture. Marcelino followed his yellow brick road to the Royal Ballet School. A warm-hearted extrovert with brown eyes, he was suddenly surrounded by an aloof society, an outsider amidst tall, blonds with blue eyes. He arrived in the land of Her Majesty bringing a bit of Africa with him in his bags. Despite a difficult and lonely period of adaptation, he remembers his passage through the school as a happy experience, during which he was always true to himself – “I am going to be just what I am, Marcelino”. And he began to stand out when he asked his colleagues to take their shoes off in a choreography lesson, introducing them to the African beat that was

sounding inside of him, with his feet on the ground, without point shoes, without artifice. On stage, Marcelino is emotional. He dances naturally with subtly personal moves – he does it for himself, immersed in a beat that warms his soul, where he brings careful technique together with an African breeze that always guides him when he performs. Offstage he is rational. He’s a thinker, frenetically searching of the next challenge, the next step to dance in search of his dream. If, on the one hand, he would like to be a pioneer of modern dance, building a style that brings classical dance into a symbiosis with African moves, on the other he hopes to bring European rhythms to Africa, where he would like to teach ballet to disadvantaged children. That way he could nurture the export of his own art worldwide

“there is a lack of black classical dancers with their distinctive body language, its greater physicality”. Following the surprise of his jump to international fame when he was nominated as the First Artist at the London Royal Ballet where he’s been dancing since 2012, Marcelino admits to being proud of representing Portugal in the diaspora and to being able to promote contemporary dance at the national level.

Off stage, as he wanders around London, with his feet firmly planted on the ground Marcelino - almost ironically - reveals himself changing from his paint shoes to his Dr. Martens boots He changes from his stage tights with their 1970s and 80s prints and he prefers a colourful vintage style that is very different than that of his stage image. This is one young talent who promises to keep on living life dancing.

96 DIVO NOVEMBRO / DEZEMBRO 2015

According to Manuel Kanza, you can’t dance kuduro with just your body. You need to use your mind too (and the spirit). The creator of Cracanza and Afrokanza saw his world transformed by dance when he entered the first Bounce Angola, a TV contest that aimed to find the country’s finest dancer. ‘That victory changed my life totally. Everything that I have today I owe to having won Bounce [Angola]. My dancing has taken me places that I never imagined seeing. Many doors have opened. I’ve visited countries I’d never dreamt of seeing. And today I have my own dance academy and studio of image production,’ confessed the choreographer who, after studying for a year in Lisbon, got a scholarship to the Angel Vianna Dance Faculty, in Brazil. It was at this period that Manuel decided to define himself as a ‘true choreographer’. He put together Cracanza, a mix of contemporary dance with Tai Chi Chuan. ‘At the university, I had a subject where I had to invent a style of dance that related to me. I wanted to come up with something that was honest and raw, something completely new’, recounts Manuel.

Intended for those over 6 years of age, Cracanza is an ‘art that belongs in the category of yoga and pilates.’ It’s a form of therapy. It releases joint and muscle tension. This union of body and soul comes about through Angolan and Congolese rhythms, like ndombolo, that Kanza used to dance as a child until he discovered Michael Jacskson on the small screen. These beats ended up influencing his career as a choreographer. A er being invited to participate in the Festival Internacional de Danças Urbanas in Rio de Janeiro, Rio H2K, Manuel sought out a way to blend African dances. Pantsula, mbrututo, ndombolo, kuduro, azonto, kwaito and popping all came together into one single style, the Afrokanza. ‘”Afro” comes from Africa; kanza means planting so that you may reap. And this dance allows you to both plant and to reap African rhythms’.

za project, together with the Dutch dancer Lisanne Van Sonsbeek. ‘I’d always dreamed of having an international dance company that could work online, to develop dance in Angola and show Angolans the dance styles from all over the world as well as the challenges that we have faced’. Armed with cameras, they use the urban Luanda landscape as their backdrop for the steps that the city has seen springing from the suburbs. They are also planning to set up the largest urban and traditional dance events in Luanda. Founding member of the Os Kuduristas project, Manuel Kanza is becoming better and better known as an international representative of kuduro. A er having carried this dance style all across Europe and even to the other side of the Atlantic, he promises not to stop there. ‘I really admire Chris Brown, for his success as a young artist and for his career too. But if I could do a show or a video clip, I’d really like to do it with Coréon Dú or Pérola. They are both highly versatile musicians who don’t limit themselves to any particular style’.
