MAUZA ANTÓNIO Em 2014 foi considerada uma das mais bem vestidas dos Latin Grammy Awards, pelo site do E!. Já lhe foi atribuído um possível romance com Jared Leto e um dos seus últimos trabalhos foi fotografado pelo lendário Bruce Weber. In 2014, the site E! judged this young model the Best Dressed at the Latin Grammy Awards. It’s been rumoured that there is a potential romance going on between her and Jared Leto.

And she’s recently had a photo shoot by the legendary photographer Bruce Weber. We’re talking about Mauza António, a young model discovered by Angolan agency Da Banda Models Management. Since then she’s become a constant presence on the catwalks in New York and she’s all the rage in Los Angeles as well!

It seems like it was only yesterday that Amilna posed the first time for DIVO (the first magazine that she appeared in). At that point, she had just returned from China where she won the third place in the Elite Model Look International competition. She was discovered in Angola in 2013 by Da Banda Model Management and now, only two years later, she has made an international name for herself. She has worked in Paris, London, Milan and New York and she has representation in 9 countries. Amilna Estevão is a name to remember because she’s got everything it takes to become one of the most famous models in the world.

Tinha acabado de chegar da China onde conquistou o terceiro lugar no Elite Model Look International. Foi descoberta pela Da Banda Model Management em Angola em 2013, e, passados apenas dois anos, é considerada uma modelo internacional. Desfilou em Paris, Londres, Milão e Nova Iorque, estando agenciada em nove países. Amilna Estevão é um nome a decorar, pois tem tudo para vir a ser uma das mais faladas modelos do mundo.

MARLON TEIXEIRA Com apenas 23 anos Marlon Teixeira é a cara do perfume 212 Carolina Herrera Men, do Just Gold da Just Cavalli e da L’Oreal Men Expert. Mas não é só de beleza que se faz a sua carreira. Muitas são as campanhas para marcas de moda tão relevantes como a Tommy, H&M, Etro, Intimissimi, etc.

Este moreno de Santa Catarina do Sul, no Brasil, promete ainda fazer disparar muitos flashes.

Mas fazem ainda parte do seu currículo marcas como Chanel, Balmain, Victoria’s Secret, etc. O ano passado a modelo deu um salto na carreira tornando-se designer com a colecção Naara para a RBS. Sharam é por todos estes motivos uma excelente embaixadora da beleza angolana.

Angolan Sharam Diniz currently lives in New York where she collects a wide range of modelling awards. One of her most recent campaigns was for the American giant Target.

But she also has labels such as Chanel, Balmain and Victoria’s Secret in her portfolio.

Last year, she took a new step into design and brought out her own Naara collection for RBS. That’s why Sharam is an excellent representative of Angolan beauty.

MARQUES’ALMEIDA Marta e Paulo conheceram-se na faculdade; seguiram-se os concursos de moda e um MA na Central Saint Martins. Em Abril de 2011 estes dois jovens talentos juntaram-se para criar uma das marcas mais cool do planeta. O seu ADN faz-se de denim e de um espírito livre e desafiador influenciado pelos anos 90. A prova de que têm o factor cool que faz disparar mil flashes foi a sua parceria com a Topshop para o inverno passado e o prémio LVMH este ano. Uma dupla a ter debaixo de olho! Afinal não são todos que conseguem tornar ganga desfiada num dos grandes hits de estilo!

No ano seguinte aventura-se em Nova Iorque tendo feito 17 desfiles. A Givenchy apaixonou-se pela angolana tendo assinado um contrato de exclusividade com a modelo para a Paris Fashion Week. É uma das modelos a participar nos míticos desfiles da Victoria’s Secret e de muitos outros gigantes da moda.

It was the Elite Model Look Angola 2011 that introduced fashion to Maria Borges. She didn’t win first place but it was the launch pad to a fantastic career. The following year she headed to New York where she quickly was hired to work in 17 shows. Givenchy fell for the Angolan model and signed her for an exclusive contract for the Paris Fashion Week. She’s on the select list of models representing the legendary Victoria’s Secret, as well as that of many other fashion greats.

ARMANDO CABRAL Armando Cabral é um dos jovens empreendedores mais bem sucedidos do mundo da moda e foi capa de Março/Abril da DIVO. Fez um enorme sucesso como modelo trabalhando com os maiores nomes da moda. Mas a sua carreira não se ficou por aqui. Em 2005 enquanto se preparava para o desfile de Michael Kors teve a ideia de criar uma linha de sapatos e em 2009 nasceu a Armando Cabral. Uma marca de sapatos de sucesso internacional com pontos de venda em todo o mundo.

Armando Cabral is one of the most successful fashion entrepreneurs and the cover of the DIVO March/April issue of DIVO. He’s been enormously successfull as a model, having worked with the greatest names in fashion. But his career hasn’t stopped there. In 2005, whilst preparing for the Michael Kors show, the idea came to him to create his own line of shoes. The Armando Cabral collection was born in 2009 and is now on sale all over the world.

LAIS RIBEIRO 2015 é um ano que Lais Ribeiro nunca esquecerá, já que foi este ano que a modelo se tornou um dos anjos oficiais de Victoria’s Secret.

Durante a adolescência, questionou-se muitas vezes em relação à cor da sua pele e ao seu cabelo; achava que era um castigo e fez questão de o dizer na cerimónia dos Oscars de 2013, onde foi galardoada com a estatueta de Melhor Actriz Secundária, pela sua prestação como Patsey, no filme de Steve McQueen, 12 Anos Escravo.

She was born in Mexico but she grew up in Kenya. As a teenager she felt revolted by the colour of her skin and her hair. She felt like she’d been punished as she made a point of sharing during her acceptance speech at the Oscar Award ceremonies when she won a statue for the Best Supporting Actress for her role in Steve McQueen’s film 12 Years a Slave.

CRISTIANO RONALDO Começou o seu percurso no Sporting Clube de Portugal, com apenas 15 anos. Daí para o Manchester United foi um pulo e, actualmente, é um dos jogadores com mais destaque do Real Madrid e capitão da Selecção Portuguesa de Futebol. Na sua lista de prémios já constam quatro Botas de Ouro e duas Bolas de Ouro. Recentemente, lançou a linha de calçado CR7 e foi condecorado pelo Governo Português como Grande-Oficial da Ordem Infante D. It was just a quick jump to Manchester United and now he is one of the top players at Real Madrid and captain of the Portuguese National Team. His list of awards includes four European Golden Shoes and two Ballons d’Or. Apesar de já ter participado em inúmeros filmes, ganhou visibilidade nos filmes O Mordomo (2013), como filho de Cecil Gaines (Forest Whitaker), um jovem activista contra a segregação nos Estados Unidos, e em 2014 no filme Selma, onde dava vida a Martin Luther King Jr. A sua prestação valeu-lhe a nomeação para o Globo de Ouro para Melhor Actor.

It was his portrayal of the young civil rights activist, son of Cecil Gaines (Forest Whitaker) in The Butler (2013) that first brought him into the limelight. MATAANO A Mataano nasceu em 2008 pela mão das gémeas Ayaan e Idyl Mohalim. Foi em Nova Iorque que realizaram o sonho de criar a sua própria marca, mas é do seu país, Somália, que chegam muitas das suas influências. Moderna e sofisticada, a Mataano já conquistou Oprah Winfrey e as irmãs Olsen, valendo-lhes convites para desfiles na Suécia, África do Sul e Jamaica, para além dos Estados Unidos, onde vivem.

Mataano was born in 2008 fruit of the collaboration between twin sisters Ayaan and Idyl Mohalim. It was in New York that they set up their own label but many of their influences come from their nation, Somalia. Modern and sophisticated, Mataano has won fans as well known as Oprah Winfrey and the Olsen sisters.

They have been invited to present collections in fashion shows in Sweden, South Africa, and Jamaica as well as in the U.S. where they live.

CHARLIZE THERON

She is one of the best-known South African actors. Her cinema boom took place when she starred alongside Keanu Reeves in the film The Devil’s Advocate. She won an Oscar for her performance in the film Monster, in 2003. She is known as an activist. She set up the Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Project in 2007 and is an UN Peace Messenger, as well as being involved in numerous feminist causes.

CANDICE SWANEPOEL A modelo sul-africana Candice Swanepoel foi descoberta aos 15 anos num mercado de Durban. Hoje com 27 anos é considerada uma das mulheres mais sexys do mudo, tendo ficado famosas as suas campanhas para a Victoria’s Secret. Anjo oficial da marca desde 2010, a modelo é muito mais que uma cara bonita. Este ano desenhou uma colecção de jeans que reverteu a favor da organização sem fins lucrativos Mothers2Mothers, que apoia mães e filhos com HIV em vários países africanos.

This South African model was discovered at a Durban market when she was 15 years old. Candice Swanepoel, 27 years old, is now thought to be one of the sexiest women in the world, thanks, in part, to her campaigns for Victoria’s Secret. She became an official VS angel in 2010 and, yet, she is much more than just a pretty face.

This year she designed a collection of jeans whose profits will go to support Mothers2Mothers, an NGO that supports HIV mothers and children in several African counties.

FELIPE OLIVEIRA BAPTISTA Natural dos Açores, Felipe Oliveira Baptista é o homem por trás do crocodilo da Lacoste. Em 2010 tomou as rédeas da marca americana, onde se mantém até hoje. Do seu currículo fazem parte Maxmara, Christophe Lemaire e Cerruti, para além de uma marca em nome próprio que teve um enorme sucesso, fazendo parte do calendário oficial da semana da moda de Paris. O ano passado o designer decidiu fazer uma pausa na sua marca, dedicando-se neste momento inteiramente à Lacoste.

Felipe Oliveira Baptista is the man from the Azores who is behind the Lacoste crocodile. He took over at the American label in 2010 and is still there today. His CV includes labels such as Maxmara, Christophe Lemaire and Cerruti as well as his own enormously successful brand which was part of the official programme at the Paris Fashion Week. Last year, however, the designer put his own label on hold so that he could focus entirely on that little reptile at Lacoste.

JOAN SMALLS Aos 27 anos a porto-riquenha Joan Smalls é uma das modelos mais bem pagas do mundo. O seu trabalho como manequim tem quebrado várias barreiras, sendo a primeira latina a representar a Esteé Lauder em 2011 e a primeira modelo de ascendência africana a ser capa da Porter. Para além da moda a música também faz parte da sua carreira tendo participado em vários vídeo clips. Ricky Martin, Beyoncé e Asap Rocky são alguns dos artistas com quem colaborou.

Angolan singer and producer, Coréon Dú’s career has spread far beyond music. After releasing his debut album The Coréon Experiment in 2010,s he managed to hit the Billboard Latin Rhythm chart with Bailando Kizomba, the first singe from his new album Binário. Exilado do Zimbabué, foi o primeiro estudante negro a conseguir um BFA na Universidade de Pretória, na África do Sul. Vive actualmente em Joanesburgo e já participou em várias exposições em todo o mundo, nomeadamente no Victoria & Albert Museum, em Londres, e no MoMA, em Nova Iorque.

Também já participou no Festival de Cinema de Sundance, com o seu filme Iyeza.

He was born and grew up in Holland and he’s the composer of the single Bo Tem Mel that he released together with the Angolan singer C4 Pedro. It was one of the first African singles to hit the top of the international charts.

His first contact with music was through breakdance. When he was younger, however, he’d wanted to become a cook, even though he confessed to DIVO a few months ago that he ‘can’t even fry an egg.’

He seeks ‘simple ways to make beautiful things and beautiful ways to make simple things’. At 28 years of age, Thula Sindi is one of the most successful fashion designers in South Africa. After working at the Dutch company Vlisco, he went on to create his eponymous line of clothing for the modern, sophisticated woman. His collections seek inspiration in the complexities of this woman, her routines and her needs. In 2011, when he was presenting his collection at the Joburg Fashion Week, he received tremendous critical acclaim for having brought women’s wear back to its soft and graceful origins.

EDSON CHAGAS Nasceu em Luanda, em 1977. Frequentou a London College of Communication, onde se formou em Fotojornalismo em 2007, e a University of Wales, em 2008, para aprofundar os seus conhecimentos em Fotografia para Documentário. As suas fotografias já correram o mundo: começaram pela Trienal de Luanda, em 2010, já expôs na SP-Arte, em São Paulo, voaram até à Nigéria e aos Camarões, e já passaram pelo Museu Berardo. Foi um dos finalistas da edição do Novo Banco Photo 2015 e, no ano passado, contribuiu para o primeiro Leão de Ouro de Angola na Bienal de Veneza – o pavilhão vencedor contava com 23 fotografias de Edson.

Born in Luanda in 1977, Edson Chagas attended the London College of Communication, graduating in photojournalism in 2007. He then went to the University of Wales, in 2008, to specialise in Documentary Photography. His images have travelled the world, beginning with the Luanda Trienal in 2010. He has exhibited work at the SP-Arte, in São Paulo, Brazil. His photos have visited as far as Nigeria and Cameroon and they’ve hung on the walls of the Museu Berardo in Lisbon as well. He was one of the finalists in the 2015 Novo Banco 2015 photography contest.

And last year, 23 of Edson’s images were part of the Golden Lion Award winning Angolan pavilion at the Venice Biennale.

WILLIAM KAMKWAMBA Tinha apenas 14 anos quando, para produzir energia para a sua casa no Maláui, criou um moinho produtor de energia. Como? Utilizando o dínamo de uma bicicleta, uma correia, uma ventoinha de um tractor, cintos de borracha e postes de bambu. Conseguiu gerar energia suficiente para acender quatro candeeiros e dois rádios. Já foi convidado a discursar na conferência TEDGlobal, onde confessou o seu sonho: construir um moinho em grandes dimensões, que permitisse a toda a sua aldeia ter energia... e voltar à escola. Conseguiu estudar Engenharia Ambiental na Universidade de Dartmouth, nos Estados Unidos, e tem a sua vida documentada no livro e no filme The Boy Who Harnessed The Wind: Creating Currents of Electricity and Hope.

He was just 14 years old when he created a windmill to power his house in Malawi. How did he do it? He used a hub dynamo from a bicycle, a chain, a tractor fan, rubber belts and bamboo posts. He managed to generate enough electricity to light four lamps and two radios. When he was invited to give a TEDGlobal talk, he shared his dream: to build a huge windmill that would bring energy to his entire village…and to return to school. He managed to study Environmental Engineering at Dartmouth University in the U.S. and his life has been documented in the book and the film The Boy Who Harnessed The Wind: Creating Currents of Electricity and Hope.

BONANG MATHEBA Aos 27 anos, Bonang Matheba é uma das mais populares apresentadoras da África do Sul. MÚSICA É uma das cantoras mais jovens de Angola e só tem dois álbuns editados, mas em dez anos já ganhou todos os prémios que podia ganhar.

Como é que se sente com este sucesso? 9 Estou muito feliz. Cheguei aqui com a graça de Deus e com muito trabalho. Ele não gosta de pessoas preguiçosas! Não basta pedir e esperar; uma pessoa tem de trabalhar e correr atrás. Eu trabalhei, suei, estive noites sem dormir para gravar discos, perdi festas, aniversários, momentos em família para o fazer. Tenho trabalhado em prol da música angolana e acho que mereci todos os prémios que ganhei. Estou muito feliz por, em apenas nove anos de carreira, ter alcançado tudo isto.

Também é conhecida, tanto no palco como fora dele, pela sua irreverência. Como é que moldou esta imagem, mantendo-se fiel a si própria? 9 Na verdade, eu sempre fui assim! Sempre gostei de fazer as pessoas rir, desde criança. Eu vim de uma família pobre e humilde e, mesmo com a pobreza e dificuldades porque passei, eu estava sempre a rir, mesmo que tivesse passado dias sem comer. Acho que a vida tem de ser vivida, apesar dos problemas que nós temos. Sempre gostei de ser diferente dos outros, de ser única. O que sou em casa, sou na rua e em palco.

Como é que reagiu às primeiras críticas? 9 A música sempre foi aceite. O problema era a Ary, a pes-

soa, e o comportamento, que chocava e ainda hoje choca. Tentaram-me mudar, mas eu não consigo ter duas caras. No princípio da carreira foi duro, eu não estava à espera de críticas nem de invenções. Até que um dia o Heavy C, que sempre foi o meu mentor, me disse que se fosse a ouvir tudo o que me diziam, nunca iria para a frente. Se as críticas forem construtivas, eu acato e tento melhorar, mas em relação ao resto... falem!

Recentemente, juntou-se aos Kassav para um concerto no Coliseu dos Recreios, em Lisboa, com quem também subiu ao palco no Festival Sons do Atlântico. 9 Quando me propuseram a ideia de fazer Ary + Kassav, eu amei, porque sou muito fã deles e tenho muito a aprender com eles. Estão nisto há muitos anos, até antes de eu nascer! Quando eles me convidaram para cantar com eles no Sons do Atlântico, fiquei louca! Acho que até fiz mais brincadeira em palco do que outra coisa...

Como é a sua relação com o público português?

9 Sempre foi boa. Cantei em Portugal pela primeira vez em 2008 e sempre fui muito bem acolhida e agradeço muito por isso. Agora que a música angolana está a tocar muito em Portugal, eles acolhem-nos ainda melhor e já sabem cantar kizomba! Amo Portugal e os portugueses e espero que essa ligação continue. É uma troca de experiências e culturas, também.

Gosto muito de fado e de cantar fado. Quem sabe, um dia, gravo um fado!

Recentemente, lançou o single do projecto Team de Sonho. Participei com a música ‘Não me Faça Desistir’, que é muito calma e muito linda e retrata problemas pelos quais os casais passam muito.

Com quem gostaria um dia de fazer uma participação? 9 Ainda quero fazer alguma coisa com o Bonga ou com o Paulo Flores. Já falei com eles, mas é muito complicado por causa das agendas. Mas vai chegar o dia em que eu vou poder fazer uma música com eles e partilhar o palco, especialmente com o Bonga, que tem uns toques...!

O que é que já tem preparado para o futuro? 9 Muitos concertos! Se tudo correr bem, em Agosto – o meu mês de aniversário! – vou lançar o meu terceiro disco, com apenas dez músicas. Mas para o ano completo dez anos de carreira e 30 de vida e vou dar uma festa de arromba! Estou a preparar coisas muito lindas para o próximo ano, em que me vou preparar para ser mãe também!

You’re one of the youngest singers in Angola and you only have two albums released but in 10 years you’ve already won all the awards out there. How does this success make you feel? 9 I’m really happy. I’ve come all this way by the grace of God and with a lot of hard work. He doesn’t like lazy people! It’s not enough to sit around and wait. A person has to work and to chase a er what they want! I’ve worked. I’ve sweated. I’ve had sleepless nights in the recording studio. I’ve skipped parties, birthdays, family occasions in order to advance my career. I’ve done all this work in service to Angolan music and I hope that I deserve all the awards that I’ve received. I’m very happy that, in spite of only having been singing for 9 years, I have achieved all this.

You are also well known, both on stage and off, for your cheekiness. How did you come up with this image? How do you stay true to yourself?

9 The truth is, I’ve always been this way! I’ve always liked making people laugh, even as a child. I came from a poor and simple family and, despite the poverty and the problems I lived through, I was always laughing, even if I hadn’t eaten for days. I think life has to be lived despite the problems we face. I’ve always liked being different, being unique. The person I am at home is the same person as I am on the street, or even on stage.

How did you react to the first reviews? 9 My mu-

sic was initially well received. The problem was Ary, the person, her behaviour, that shocked people. It still shocks them today. They tried to change me but I just can’t be two faced. At the beginning of my career, it was hard.

I hadn’t expected to hear the criticisms or the made up stories. Until one day, Heavy C, who was always my mentor, told me that if I listened to everything they said about me I would never make it. If the criticism is constructive, I take it in and try to do better, but as far as the rest of it goes… just let them talk!

You recently joined Kassav for a concert at the Coliseu dos Recreios, in Lisbon. You also performed with them on stage at the Festival Sons do Atlântico.9 When they suggested the idea of doing an Ary & Kassav, I loved the idea because I am a fan of them and there was so much I could learn from them. They’ve been doing this for so long, since before I was even born!

When they invited me to sing with them at the Sons do Atlântico, I went crazy! I think that I played around on stage more than anything else…

What’s your relationship with the Portuguese audience? 9 It’s always been good. I sang in Portugal for the first time in 2008 and I have always been well-received and I appreciate it. Now that there is more Angolan music being heard in Portugal, they enjoy us even more and they already have learned to sing Kizomba! I

love Portugal and the Portuguese and I hope that this connection continues. It’s an exchange of experience and cultures as well. I love fado and I sing fado. Who knows?!

Maybe I’ll record a fado record some day!

You’ve recently released a single song of the Dream Team project. How did the chance come up to participate in this project, alongside the great names of Angolan music?9 I was invited last year and I accepted very gladly. It was wonderful being there beside musicians that I love, like Yuri da Cunha, Heavy C, JD... It’s a privilege! I sang ‘Não me Faça Desistir/Don’t Make me Give up’, that’s a quiet, beautiful piece about those problems that couples o en face.

Who would you like to perform with one day? 9 I’d love to do something with Bonga or Paulo Flores. I’ve talked to them but it’s really hard because of their schedules. But the day is going to come when I can make some music with them and share the stage with them, especially with Bonga who’s got some great moves!

What do you have in the works for the future? 9 Lots of shows! If all goes as planned, in August, that’s my birthday month – I’m going to release my third album, with just 10 tracks. But in the year that I’ve completed 10 years of my career and 30 years of life, I’m going to have a huge party! I’m already getting some beautiful things ready for next year. And I’m preparing to be a mother as well!

A vulnerabilidade é um tema recorrente dos filmes de Abderrahmane Sissako, natural da Mauritânia. No seu filme nomeado para os Oscares, Timbuktu, realizado em 2014, mostra a precariedade da vida humana e como uma acção de uma fracção de segundo pode provocar ondas de sofrimento. “Não era uma criança infeliz, mas, ao mesmo tempo, também não era particularmente feliz”, reflecte o realizador, agora com 53 anos. Os seus tempos de escola no Mali, para onde a família se mudou durante a sua infância, foram traumáticos. “O sistema educativo era muito duro”, recorda o realizador. “Havia uma certa violência nos métodos de ensino com a qual eu não concordava”.

Esta experiência precoce pode explicar por que razão os seus filmes mostram outro tipo de fragilidade: a inocência despreocupada das crianças que vivem em ambientes ensombrados pela agressividade. Com seis anos foi pela primeira vez ao cinema, ver Charlie Chaplin, e imediatamente adormeceu. Mas no dia seguinte, o seu irmão contou-lhe o que tinha perdido, “tive a impressão que estava a ver o filme ao mesmo tempo. Percebi que podia guardar na memória coisas que nunca tinha visto ao vivo”.

Outro ponto de viragem foi a rodagem de Rostov-Luanda (1997), na sequência da sua visita a uma Angola devastada pela guerra procurando Baribanga, um amigo que tinha conhecido na União Soviética. Esta experiência preparou-o para realizar La vie sur terre, o filme que o tornou famoso.

O objectivo, percebeu ele mais tarde, não era encontrar o seu amigo, mas sim “que os angolanos me falassem sobre o seu país”. A descoberta mais importante foi que “a noção de identidade nada tinha a ver com a cor da pele.

Era outra questão”.

Talvez o especial talento deste residente no Senegal, França e Mauritânia, seja revelar essa qualidade imperceptível e que todos partilhamos: a nossa humanidade.

Timbuktu é um filme que percebe como as nossas vidas são vividas em tradução – como a linguagem molda o nosso mundo, como em África se falam centenas de línguas diferentes – e que depois considera o que significa esta multiplicidade e como as pessoas podem e devem viver juntas. Crescendo na sociedade multicultural e com múltiplas línguas do Mali, o realizador, Abderrahmane Sissako, recorre à antiga cidade onde “se falam sete línguas diferentes no mercado local” para mostrar o que acontece quando uma crença monolítica é imposta sobre a diversidade.

Timbuktu is a film that understands that our lives are lived in translation - that language shapes our world, that in Africa hundreds of different languages are spoken - and then considers what this multiplicity means for how people can and should live together. Having grown up in a multilingual and multicultural society in Mali, the film’s director, Abderrahmane Sissako, uses the ancient city where ‘seven different languages are spoken in the marketplace’ to show what happens when something monolithic is imposed upon diversity.

Vulnerability is a recurring theme in the films of Mauritanian-born Abderrahmane Sissako. In his 2014 Oscar-nominated picture, Timbuktu, it’s the precariousness of human life, and how a split-second action can produce waves of suffering.

‘I wasn’t an unhappy child, but not especially happy either’, muses the 53 year old director. His schooldays in Mali, where his family moved in his childhood, were traumatic. ‘The educational system was very harsh’, he recalls. ‘There was a type of violence in the teaching methods that I didn’t agree with’. This early experience may help explain why his films o en depict another type of fragility, the joyful innocence of children living in environments overshadowed by aggression.

At the age of six, he went to see his first film, starring Charlie Chaplin, and promptly fell asleep. But the next day, as his brother recounted all he had missed, ‘I had the impression that I was watching the film at the same time. I realised that it was possible to keep a record of even things you have never seen’.

Another turning point was making Rostov-Luanda (1997), which follows his visit to war-damaged Angola in search of Baribanga, a friend he had made in the Soviet Union.

It prepared him to make La ville sur terre, the film that made him famous. The goal, he realised, was not to find his friend, but for ‘Angolans to tell me about their country’.

The major discovery was that ‘the notion of identity had nothing to do with skin colour. It was something else’.

And perhaps that is the special talent of this resident of Senegal, France and Mauritania, to reveal that indiscernible quality the whole world shares: our humanity.

Nem só de mobília bonita e iluminação diferenciada se fez o último Salone de Design na cidade de Milão. Como sempre nestas ocasiões aproveitámos para ver como se apresentaram os designers que são as bombas de mercado mais recentes. De mercado e não só.

Depois de no online em divo.co.ao lhe termos apresentado em preview 20 peças top do Salão de Milão 2015, mostramos-lhe agora as caras de quem desenhou algumas das peças. E com pouquíssimas mas meritórias excepções, tudo apresentado já este ano.

É mais que mítica a ligação visceral e telúrica entre irmãos.

Pelo menos neste caso será certamente, e o génio de Erwan e Ronan Bouroullec chega-nos por isso em dobro. O brilhantismo dos irmãos nasce não da semelhança de feitios, mas das personalidades distintas, numa discussão constante, unidos apenas na certeza conjunta da progressão até à excelência.

Estrearam-se em 1997 com o projecto auto-proposto Desintegrated Kitchen no Salão do Móvel de Paris e aí foram descobertos por Giulio Cappellini, que lhes comissionou os primeiros desenhos industriais.

Em 2000 Issey Miyake encomendou-lhes o desenho espacial para a boutique A-Poc em Paris, e logo vieram outros atraídos pela empática racionalização do trabalho dos Bouroullec: a Vitra, a Flos, a Nani Marquina, a Mattiazzi, a Kartell, a Mutina, a Hay e pelo menos mais uma dúzia de grandes marcas mundiais são regularmente clientes de Erwan e Ronan, trazendo deles, várias vezes ao ano, desenhos sempre novos.

The earthy, visceral link between brothers is sometimes greater than myth. That’s certainly true in this case. The genius of Erwan and Ronan Bouroullec is delivered in double. The brilliance of these brothers arises not from any similarity of personality but from their very differences. They are in constant dialogue, brought together primarily through their commitment to working together to achieve excellence. Their premiere took place in 1997 with their application for the Disintegrated Kitchen at the M & O Interior Design trade fair, Paris. They were discovered by Giulio Cappellini, who commissioned their first industrial designs. Then in 2000 Issey Miyake invited them to decorate the interior of his Paris A-Poc boutique. Then others were attracted by the brothers’ ability to empathically bring their clients’ visions to reality: Vitra, Flos, Nani Marquina, Mattiazzi, Kartell, Mutina, Hay and at least another dozen great world brands have become regular clients of Erwan and Ronan, receiving from them multiple fresh designs, several times annually.

MENINO DO RIO Zanini de Zanine nasceu no Rio de Janeiro, em 1978 e cresceu vendo o seu pai, José Zanine Caldas, trabalhando de forma magistral, que lhe conferiu mais tarde o título de Mestre da Madeira. Dele herdou o olho esteta para o design, que o levou a estagiar com Sérgio Rodrigues e a formar-se em Desenho Industrial pela PUC-Rio. A partir de 2003 começou a produzir móveis com a madeira maciça sobrada de obras de casas antigas - vigas, colunas e mourões – baptizando esta produção como Carpintaria Contemporânea. Cedo estendeu o seu talento ao plástico, ao metacrilato e ao metal, criando para tal o Studio Zanini. Num fogaréu pouco comum neste meio, desde aí, Zanini já desenhou para a Tolix, a Cappellini, a Slamp e a Poltrona Frau, entre muitas muitas outras.

Este ano foi nomeado Designer do Ano pela Maison & Objet Americas 2015.

MENINO DO RIO

Zanini de Zanine was born in Rio de Janeiro in 1978 and he grew up watching his father work in a magisterial way that would later win him the title of Wood Master. He inherited his father’s eye for aesthetic design which he went on to perfect when training under Sérgio Rodrigues. Later he graduated in Industrial Design from PUC-Rio. In 2003 he began to produce solid wood furniture from the leftovers from old houses – beams, columns and fence posts – a process that he named Contemporary Carpentry. Early on he extended his efforts into plastic, methacrylate and metal. That’s when he set up Zanini Studio.

In a flash unusual in this field, he was soon producing designs for Tolix, Cappellini, Slamp and Poltrona Frau, amongst many others.

He has just been nominated Designer of the Year by Maison & Objet Americas 2015.

A entrada do nome de Rodolfo Dordoni num dos poucos fiáveis motores de busca exclusivos para o design acusou 371 produtos para 22 casas produtoras e, neste caso, não falamos de protótipos nem de arrufos artísticos. Estas são peças de grande difusão em pleno comércio.

Mais! Em muitos dos casos Dordoni não desenha apenas; é responsável de arte ou do design da casa, como o faz por exemplo para a Artemide, para a Cappellini entre 1979 e 1989, na produção do mobiliário da Fontana Arte, na iluminação da Foscarini e na direcção-geral da gigantesca Minotti, desde 1998. É verdade que como em tudo fará melhor design quem o faz há mais tempo, e se a esta especificidade de Rodolfo Dordoni juntarmos toda a carga cultural que a Itália tem de avanço na manufactura e na produção, o designer bate quase o resto do mundo aos pontos. Talvez este carimbo – o de director antes do de artista – lhe tenha toldado a faísca e a ‘desconcertância’ que faz com que nos apaixonemos por um novo talento. Mas este é o mesmo carimbo que garante que do seu estirador sairá sempre produto correcto e fiável.

Punching the name Rodolfo Dordoni into the most reliable search engine specifically aimed at design, yielded 371 products by 22 different producers and, in this case, we’re neither talking about prototypes nor artistic hiccoughs. These are pieces that are widely distributed throughout the market. Even more! In many cases Dordoni doesn’t limit himself to the design. He is also responsible for the art or the producers design, as he is, for example, for Artemide. He did the same at Cappellini from 1979 to 1989.

The same feat he applied to furniture production at Fontana Arte and for lighting at Foscarini. Currently he’s been working as general manager at the giant Minotti since 1998. It’s as true for design as it is for everything else: the best designer is often the one who has been practicing the longest. And this is especially true for Rodolfo Dordoni. And let us not forget Italy’s key role in advancing furniture manufacture and production. This designer has alone accumulated more points than almost the rest of the world together. There’s a slight chance that his current role –more director than artist – has dulled the spark and has discomforted us to the extent that we become susceptible to the allure of new talent. But this is a brand that we can rely on. The pieces that arise from Dordoni’s drawing table are ensured to be right and reliable, guaranteed.

A MÁQUINA ALEMÃ É o benjamim desta lista: nasceu em 1981, mas tal não invalida que só neste ano, que ainda vai a meio, tenha já ganho três prémios Interior Innovation, duas Menções Especiais do German Design Award, e o prémio Best International Newcomer do EDIDA, o reputado Elle Deco International Design Award.

Aliás, Sebastian Herkner conta já com mais de vinte e cinco prémios relevantes; o primeiro deles ainda como estudante em 2003.

Ser um novo talento não implica (mesmo!) romper totalmente com o establishment, bem pelo contrário.

Quando tal acontece, a escala da desgraça pode ser balizada entre ‘número de circo’ até ‘tourada numa loja de porcelana’. Para se afirmar como sangue novo no design, Sebastian nunca pôs em causa regras e preceitos intemporais; inovou sim, nas suas próprias palavras “enfatizando sempre a função, o material e o detalhe. Interpreto e transporto para a peça características retiradas de vários contextos culturais de diferentes sociedades. Este processo embebe cada artigo, por mais comum e tradicional que seja o seu uso, num novo contexto pleno de carácter, respeito e personalidade”.

THE GERMAN MACHINE He’s the youngest on the list, born in 1981. Nonetheless, we’re only half way through the year and he’s already won three Interior Innovation awards, two Honourable Mentions at the German Design Award, as well as the Best International Newcomer award at the EDIDA, the famed Elle Deco International Design Award.

In fact, Sebastian Herkner has already garnered more than 25 distinguished awards, starting when he was just a student back in 2003.

Being a new talent does not mean totally breaking with the establishment. In fact, the opposite is true.

When that takes place, the damage can range anywhere from a circus act to a bull in a china shop. Sebastian has never resorted to challenging standard norms and dictates in order to make his name as a new designer.

He has innovated, it is true. But as he puts it he’s sought to ‘emphasise always the function, the material and the detail. I interpret and I bring to the piece aspects that I’ve garnered from a wide range of cultural contexts and environments. This process imbues each piece. No matter how mundane and traditional its function, I put it to use in a context full of character, respect and personality.’

Como se passa em menos de dez anos de enfant terrible do design para supra-mestre da indústria? Mais que responder a essa pergunta, Marcel Wanders parece arriscar agora tornar-se uma espécie de Pierre Cardin, não das gravatas mas das cadeiras. O que eventualmente evitará tal situação é que apesar da abrangência dos seus desenhos – quase dois mil para todas as boas marcas do mercado, incluindo as suas – o brilhantismo com que Wanders desenha tanto um suporte para ovo quente como uma torre de apartamentos no Bahrein, nunca decepciona, inovando, surpreendendo sempre.

Esperemos que o homem de quem começámos a gostar por ter iniciado a sua própria marca para ultrapassar os constrangimentos da industrialização sobre o desenho dos artistas, não acabe por sucumbir à banalização do produto quando integrado no grande mercado.

Eu falo por mim, ainda se pode pôr as mãos no fogo por Marcel.

How can you go in less than 10 years from being the enfant terrible of design to being the industrial master designer?

More than merely answering this question, Marcel Wanders now appears ready to run the risk of becoming a sort of Pierre Cardin, of chairs rather than ties. What will possibly prevent this from happening is the brilliance of his work. His designs are everywhere - he’s got almost 2,000 for all the best brands, including his own, from an egg cup to an apartment complex in Bahrain - yet he never disappoints. He is constantly innovating, constantly surprising us.

We had just begun to admire him for his initiative at starting his own brand in order to overcome the restraints that industrialisation often puts on artists’ designs. Here’s hoping that he doesn’t fall prey to product saturation when his designs are integrated into the larger market. Speaking for myself, I’m still willing to stick my neck out in support of Marcel.

A FORMA SEGUE A FICÇÃO Academicamente não seria assim. Desde o início do século XX, pelo menos, que a escola manda que a forma siga a função, para que o design da peça seja apenas e não mais do que conforme ao uso a que se destina: um jarro é um tubo, com uma goteira e uma asa para manuseio, mais nada.

Nigel Coates assume o passo em frente, arriscando e contrariando. A forma, para ele, deve, melhor, tem que seguir a ficção.

E não será isto o que se espera de um artista? Contrariar o status quo, e assim avançar? Ou cair, mas por sua conta e risco?

Mr. Coates fá-lo habilmente, no fio da navalha, entre o que deve ser feito e o que ele quer que exista.

Na arquitectura, que também pratica, Nigel acredita que a cidade pode ser melhor entendida e servida quando explorada como uma entidade viva, equilibrando o seu trabalho numa associação psico-geográfica, entre a paisagem construída e as pessoas que o habitam.

FORM FOLLOWS FICTION

Strictly speaking, it shouldn’t be this way. From the early 20th century, we’ve been taught that form follows function. The design of a piece should do nothing more, nothing less than conform to its intended function: a pitcher is a tube, with a spout and a handle and that’s it.

Nigel Coates has taken a giant step out in front, challenging and contradicting this rule. Form for him should, no, it must, follow fiction. Isn’t that what we want from an artist? To challenge the status quo, and to step out in front? Or to fall flat but due to their audacity and willingness to take risks? That’s what Mr Coates so ably does, he treads the razor’s edge between what needs to be done and what he wishes to create. In architecture, which he also practices, Nigel believes that a city will be better understood and better served when it explored as a live organism, his work is balanced amidst the psycho-geographical relationship between the constructed space and the people that inhabit it.

Este spa é um derivativo bem vindo da construção de uma usina geo-termal, em 1976, uma das muitas que põem a Islândia fora das lutas pelo petróleo que afligem o resto do mundo.

Cedo, mal acabada a usina, os locais começaram a banhar-se nas águas quentes que jorravam do chão e que não entravam na produção de energia. Tornou-se também costume esfregar na pele as lamas cinzentas de sílica, ricas em nutrientes, e em pouco tempo os utilizadores espontâneos que viviam há muito com lesões na pele, como a psoríase, constataram claras melhoras. O processo evoluiu e a Blue Lagoon tem já uma marca de produtos, desenvolvida via biotecnologia e estudos no ramo da cosmética marinha. As águas e lamas miraculosas, juntamente com a paisagem, esplendorosamente desolada como um planeta desconhecido, fazem da Blue Lagoon um spa único no mundo.

This spa is a welcome offshoot from a geo-thermal plant build in 1976, one of the many such plants that have freed Iceland from the petroleum struggles that have afflicted the rest of the world. Early on, as soon as the plant was built, local residents began swimming in the naturally heated waters that sprang out of the earth and that had not been used to generate energy. People also began scrubbing their skin with the highly enriched, grey silica rich mud, and then these users found that those who had lived for years with skin disorders such as psoriasis saw obvious improvements. The process continued on and Blue Lagoon now has a line of skin products, based on biotechnology and marine cosmetics.

The miraculous waters and muds, together with the scenery, as splendidly desolate as an uninhabited planet, put the Blue Lagoon truly in a class by itself.

Este é um dos tais spas onde se vai à hora de almoço, no centro de uma cidade cosmopolita. O coração do complexo é uma vasta piscina abobadada como um templo pós-moderno, em betão cru, numa baixa curva encimada por uma clarabóia que deixa entrar alguma luz natural.

A restante iluminação foi desenhada para não ofuscar a da clarabóia, sublinhando os arcos que sustêm a abóbada. A água é salgada artificialmente e aquecida, perfeita para boiar com os ouvidos sob a linha da água, ouvindo a música subaquática, intercalada com cantos de baleias. À volta desta larga piscina escurecida o Liquidrom tem também saunas e banhos turcos, bem como gabinetes de tratamentos específicos, como massagens indianas Abhyanga ou herbais do Bali, para alem das já clássicas mas muito eficazes massagens com pedras quentes ou óleos aromáticos. É comum músicos e DJ’s convidados actuarem no espaço enquanto funciona como um spa normal.

This is one of those spas where you can make a quick stop at lunchtime, in the centre of a cosmopolitan city. The heart of the complex is a vast, domed pool a true post-modern temple built of raw concrete with a low curve topped with a skylight that lets in muted natural light. The rest of the illumination was designed to refrain from overpowering the skylight whilst calling attention to the arches supporting the dome. The water is artificially salted and heated, perfect for floating with your ears just at the waterline, where you can listen to subaquatic music interspersed with the songs of whales. Surrounding this large dark pool, Liquidrom also has Turkish baths as well as rooms for specific treatments such as Abhyanga or Bali herbal massage, as well as the already well-known and efficacious hot stones or aromatic oils. Musicians and DJ’s are often invited to perform in the space whilst its normal spa activities are going on.

Em funcionamento desde 1923, o Mamounia tem sido uma espécie de Rick’s Café do Casablanca, onde se encontraram ao longo dos tempos cabeças coroadas e artistas de cinema, que buscavam em Marrocos o exótico distante mais próximo de casa. A arquitectura e a decoração são ostensiva e assumidamente luxuosas, para satisfazer os apetites dos visitantes que têm no imaginário este filme preconcebido do esplendor das Arábias. Para alem deste palácio made-on-purpose, o complexo situa-se no coração de um parque ajardinado belo, como só os povos que viveram sem abundância de água conseguem recriar; o paraíso árabe é antes de mais um jardim assim, onde pomares ordenados alternam com flores fragrantes e fontes cantam refrescando o ar.

O spa tem cerca de 2.500 m2 e receitas termais tão mágicas e requintadas quanto os espaços.

Ever since 1923, Mamounia has been a place akin to Rick’s Café in Casablanca where, year after year, crowned heads and cinema stars have crossed paths as they sought out in Morocco the distant exotic lands that are closest to home. Imagine um lago interior, imóvel como um espelho, cheio não de simples água mas de chá. Esta é a imagem de marca com que JinR - artista, designer, música, estudiosa de chás e trendsetter – cunhou a Green T., de forma tão eficaz que a revista Wallpaper a votou Best Spa Design em 2010. O espaço recria um pavilhão imperial dos tempos da dinastia Tang, longilíneo e integrado na paisagem dos arredores de Pequim, mas em materiais modernos e arquitectura contemporânea. Mais do que um espaço datado, o que JinR pretendeu aqui foi encontrar um lugar para experimentar “um estilo de vida assinado, um mundo para cuidar do corpo, da mente e da alma, pelos sentidos e sensualidades”. A par dos cuidados de spa, todo o desenho espacial encaminha o visitante para uma imersão total, não só numa piscina de chá verde, mas também em todos os grandes pormenores como a cozinha cuidada, tradicional sim, mas reinventada e sempre com o chá como pano de fundo.

Imagine an interior lake, immobile as a mirror, filled not with water but with tea. This is the brand with which JinR - artist, designer, musician, tea expert and trendsetter – has marked for a spa that has been so successful that Wallpaper magazine granted it the Best Spa Design award in 2010. Designed to recreate an imperial pavilion from the long gone Tang Dynasty, the spa is integrated into the landscape on the outskirts of Beijing but using modern materials and contemporary design. More than a calm space, JinR intended to find a spot to experiment with a ‘signature way of life, a world in which to nurture the body, the mind and the spirit, by way of the senses and sensuality’. In addition to the spa treatments, the entire design of the space guides the guests through total immersion, not only in a pool filled with green tea, but also in all the great details such as carefully prepared cuisine that is traditional yet innovative, and always with tea as the backdrop.

A paisagem cor de esmeralda que rodeia as instalações faz parte do processo de cura holística. Cada pormenor do espaço foi desenhado para tirar partido da paisagem florestal do Parque Nacional. As fontes que alimentam este complexo futurista do Tirol austríaco existem, com registos históricos, desde o século XVI. Desde essa altura “alguns camponeses, clérigos de um ou outro mosteiro vizinho e velhas solteironas” banhavam-se e bebiam aquelas águas quentes, sulfurosas e férreas que brotavam da terra. Desses tempos só resta a memória: o Aquadome parece mais desenho da NASA do que um espaço termal, em claro mas bom contraste com o vale dos Alpes onde se espraia.

Parte do edifício futurista são as gigantescas piscinas em forma de taça, suspensas como óvnis, uma cheia de água sulfurosa e outra de água de salmoura, animadas com remoinhos artificiais, jogos luminosos submersos e música audível apenas com as orelhas afogadas, boiando, com vista para os picos do Tirol. Especialmente no pino do Inverno, com as baixas temperaturas do ar, os aconchegantes 36ºC das águas termais são uma terapia por si só, tanto nas piscinas interiores como nas exteriores.Todas as sextas-feiras o complexo está aberto até à meia-noite, para o famoso ‘Banho de Luar’, um favorito para namorados, mas não só.

Historical records dating back as far as the 16th century mention the springs that supply this futuristic facility in the Austrian Tyrol region. Even that long ago, ‘country people, clergymen and the residents of one or two monasteries and old maids’ would take the waters and drink the waters of these hot, sulphur and ferrous waters that sprang up from the Earth there. A dança das cadeiras que assolou o mundo da moda não se ficou pelos designers e não se limitou aos campos da indústria têxtil. A tecnologia entrou na parada e rouba de cena alguns dos grandes nomes da moda. Angela Ahrendts, CEO da Burberry até 2014, faz agora parte da Apple Inc. como vice directora do departamento de vendas, Paul Deneve também abandonou o cargo de CEO na Yves Saint Laurent para se juntar à Apple no departamento de projectos especiais e Patrick Pruniaux, presidente de vendas da Tag Heuer, segui-lhe as pisadas. O gigante da tecnologia roubou assim de cena alguns dos mais influentes nomes da moda. Uma mudança que mostra claramente a cada vez mais promíscua relação entre tecnologia e moda.

Quando pensamos na ligação da moda com a tecnologia, a primeira coisa de que nos lembramos é muitas vezes do mundo do desporto. Seja pelos materiais tecnológicos - como tecidos especiais e solas de ténis ultraleves - seja pelas mais avançados gadgets ligados à actividade física. A segunda juntou-se ao Facebook e Instagram postando em tempo real os looks do seu desfile em Londres e disponibilizando imediatamente para compra seis dos looks apresentados. O site Style.com propriedade da Condé Nast, e uma das mais conceituadas e visitadas plataformas online de moda, também se vai transformar num site de e-commerce. Não há como fechar os olhos ao poder que as vendas online têm no volume de negócio da indústria da moda. Bastaria o conhecimento desta realidade para justificar a crescente relação entre tecnologia e moda.

Mas o paradigma mudou, hoje, a tecnologia entra no campo da moda sendo constantemente lançados novos fashion gadgets. Exemplo disso é a pulseira Tago Arc desenvolvida pela liber8tag. O conceito é simples: uma elegante pulseira que pode mudar de padrão conforme o estado de espírito de quem a usa. Como? Através da tago app, onde o utilizador dispõe de vários padrões que pode escolher para aplicar na sua pulseira. A grande inovação? A ligação é feita por bluetooth e não é necessário carregar bateria, até porque não existe nenhuma. No que toca a bateria, ou à falta dela, a especialista é a Aspinal of London, a marca inglesa que inventou uma sofisticada carteira capaz de carregar o iPhone e o iPad. The Marylebone Tech mantém o design clássico da marca, tendo no interior duas divisórias preparadas para carregar o iPhone e o iPad sem precisar de parar nada do que está a fazer.

Já falámos dos materiais inovadores no campo do desporto, mas a realidade é que a tecnoclogia se estende ao streetstyle e ao luxo.

Um material que é prova disso é o neoprene, que invadiu os desfiles de todo o mundo tornando-se o rei do cool. Outro material que surpreendeu o mundo foi a fibra óptica usada pelo designer Richard Nicoll no vestido que abriu o seu desfile de Primavera/Verão 2015, em Londres. Já para o próximo Inverno quem se aventurou no mundo dos materiais alternativos foi Christopher Raeburn com casacos e coletes feitos de látex insuflável. Mais futuristas são as criações da designer e professora universitária Ying Gao. Do seu portfólio fazem parte vestidos que se movem com o olhar ou com o som, através da exploração da tecnologia sensorial.

Se é verdade que a tecnologia entra cada vez mais por terras fashionistas, o contrário também acontece. Capas para telemóveis e pastas para computadores são excelentes exemplos disso. Na realidade quase todas as marca têm artigos deste tipo, elevando o que poderia ser meramente utilitário a um acessório, muitas vezes de luxo.

Speaking of batteries, or the lack of them, the specialist is Aspinal of London, an English brand that has come out with a sophisticated bag capable of recharging your iPad or iPhone. The Marylebone Tech dons the label’s classic style and has two interior compartments where you can recharge your iPhone and iPad without interrupting what you’re doing.

And if it’s true that technology is encroaching more and more on fashion’s territory, the opposite is also true. Mobile phone covers and computer bags are excellent examples. In fact, almost all brands sell this kind of items, elevating the merely useful to the level of accessory, or even that of luxury.

The invasion has not stopped there, however. Just take a look at the job opportunities in the fashion industry and you will no-

tice that IT engineers are becoming more and more sought after. It’s true… IT engineers! And no, there is no study around that shows that these experts have any special skills for cutting and sewing. The explanation is simple. Online sales are growing. Burberry and Topshop are two fashion giants who are well aware of this fact. The former has allowed its fans to compare its looks via live-streaming directly from the catwalks by means of a new Buy button on Twitter. The latter has joined up with Facebook and Instagram posting their looks from their London show in real time and making them instantly available for sale.

Style.com, a site owned by Condé Nast, is one of the most respected and most popular online fashion sites. It is also turning itself into an e-commerce site. It’s no use ignoring the volume of online fashion sales. Just this trend in and of itself is enough to justify the increasingly close relationship between technology and fashion.

We’ve spoken about the novel materials used in the sports world but the truth is that technology is penetrating the areas of street style and luxury as well. One fabric that proves our point is neoprene. It’s invaded the fashion show and has become the King of Cool. Another material that has surprised the world is the fibre optics used by designer Richard Nicoll in the dress that opened his London 2015 Spring/Summer fashion show. For the coming winter, there’s also the inflatable latex that Christopher Raeburn has ventured to use for coats and waistcoats. Even more futuristic are the creations of the designer and university lecturer Ying Gao. Her portfolio includes dresses that move or make sounds when looked at, using sensory technology.

There are so many more examples we could mention that would showcase the close relationship between these two apparently separate worlds. In fact, fashion and technology are now in touch at myriad levels, both creatively and economically. Wearable gadgets, technological clothing, new sales venues, the evolution and discovery of new materials, all of these are fields where this marriage is perfect, almost necessary. The biggest question is attempting to predict how these two huge economic sectors will come together without entering into conflict and if they will in fact generate a new line of business or just leave everything as it is. And what does that mean for fashion? Might we all be dressing like bionic humans 20 years on from now?

Nos Estados Unidos, a partir dos anos sessenta, o pós-guerra e o estabelecimento de uma sociedade de bem-estar, ancorada no consumo, foram postos em causa por fortes contestações sociais protagonizadas pelos “novos”. A questão suscitou o interesse da antropóloga Margaret Mead que, em 1969, publica Culture and Commitment, um trabalho sobre o “abismo geracional” aberto no solo americano.

Na linha de reflexão de Mead, os historiadores Neil Howe e William Strauss fixam clivagens entre gerações, através do levantamento de séries etárias a partir da fundação do país. Com o título Generations, o trabalho de Howe e Neil é dado ao prelo em 1991. Sem ser capaz de constituir-se como obra científica de referência acaba, no entanto, por se tornar uma espécie de manual para as áreas de marketing e gestão, que o aplicam em diferentes latitudes, com independência de especificidades geográficas, históricas ou culturais.

Sob a influência do livro Generations, as faixas etárias passam a ser identificadas com letras e designações: os nascidos entre 1946 e 1964 são Baby Boomers; entre 1965 até 1980 surgem os Gene X; entre 1981 e 2000 os millennials Y. A partir dessa data avança-se com o nome provisório post-millennials Z. O objectivo é tentar mapear gerações e características.

A ETERNA JUVENTUDE INQUIETA O relevo geracional salvaguarda a sobrevivência da espécie humana.

Motivo de interesse para o pensamento ocidental desde a sua génese - Platão, em A República ou do Estado, e Aristóteles, na sua Retórica, dedicam reflexões ao lugar dos jovens na civilização grega -, a questão geracional acaba por assumir um lugar importante na Revolução Industrial, durante o desenvolvimento das cidades, com o eclodir dos jovens como camada social distintiva. Nessas datas, Auguste Comte e Herbert Spencer inauguram a sociologia, rainha das ciências positivas. No novo paradigma, Karl Mannheim e Ortega y Gasset recuperam a questão das gerações como fundamental. Ambos observam canais de continuidade e diferenças substanciais no fluxo humano e referem-se ao potencial contido em cada sequência geracional, que pode ser realizado ou perdido. Tempo, acontecimentos históricos, cultura e valores partilhados são as coordenadas que determinam uma certa geração.

UMA TOMADA DE POSIÇÃO GERACIONAL “É como estas coisas que gosto de fazer e tenho mesmo que as fazer. Mas gosto ou terei sido pré-programado quando era pequenino para gostar?” diz Ritchie ao seu amigo Vin, no filme Summer of Sam, do realizador Spike Lee. A partir da segunda metade do século XX, a questão geracional é uma fonte inesgotável para o cinema, a rádio e a televisão. A juventude exige uma identidade própria. O rock and roll quebra barreiras e transforma-se em escândalo. Os modelos tornam-se universais. Ser jovem é um direito adquirido. Para Howe e Strauss, são apenas os baby boomers a reivindicar o direito de mudar o mundo.

Os baby boomers usam o protesto como participação na História. Os gene X, geração intermédia, vão ter que crescer de maneira forçada, marcados pelas ausências, rupturas parentais e pela incerteza no futuro, diante de sucessivas crises económicas. Os millennials Y mergulham no tempo instantâneo da rede. Contrários ao cepticismo dos gene X, os millennials Y consideram que toda a acção pode ser realizada através de dispositivos digitais. Querem mudar o mundo. Mas, desta vez, com a ajuda de um teclado.

In the 1960s of the U.S., the post-war establishment of a society founded on well-being based on consumption was called into question by huge social protests undertaken by the youth. The question attracted the attention of anthropologist Margaret Mead who published Culture and Commitment in 1969, a study of the generation gap that had opened up on American soil. Following on from Mead, the historians Neil Howe and William Strauss defined the separation between the generations by way of age cohorts going back to the early days of the nation in their work Generations, published in 1991. Despite its lack of scientific recognition, their work has, nevertheless, become a sort of handbook for marketing and management experts who apply it at different latitudes, independently of geographic, historical or cultural differences.

Under the influence of Generations, age cohorts have become labeled with letters and names. Those people born between 1946 and 1964 are the Baby Boomers and between 1965 and 1980 we have the X Generation. Those coming between 1981 and 2000 are Millennial Y and those born a er that date are labeled the Post-millennial Z generation.

The object is to try to map the generations and their characteristics.

THE ETERNALLY RESTLESS YOUTH The generational pattern is the safeguard of the human species. It has been a topic of debate in western society since its genesis – Plato in The Republic and Aristotle in Rhetoric both reflected about the role of youth in ancient Greek civilization. The question of generations became especially important during the Industrial Revolution as cities began to grow and as the youth began to emerge as a separate social layer.

At this point, Auguste Comte and Herbert Spencer were founding the science of sociology, the Queen of positive science. In this new paradigm, Karl Mannheim and Ortega y Gasset once again turned to the question of generations as a fundamental question. Both thinkers observed currents of continuity as well as substantial differences in human trends. They pointed out the potential in each generational sequence that might either be realised or might be lost. Time, historical events, shared culture and values make up the coordinates that determine the nature of each generation.

TAKING A GENERATIONAL STANCE “I got these things I like doing-I like doing them so much, that I have to do. But no, I really like doin’ em…or was I preprogrammed at an early age to respond to liking them?”, says Ritchie to his friend Vin, in Summer of Sam, by Spike Lee. By the mid 20th century, the generational question is an endless source of inspiration for cinema, radio and television. Adolescence demands its own identity. Rock and Roll breaks down barriers and ends up in scandal. The models become universal. Being young is an acquired right. For Howe and Strauss, this is just an example of the Baby Boomers demanding their right to change the world.

Baby Boomers use social protest to make their mark on history. The X Generation, in the middle, have to grow up quickly, marked as they are by absence, parental divorce and by the uncertainty of the future with so many successive financial crises. The Millennial Y immerse themselves in the instantaneous time of the web. Unlike the skepticism of the Gene X, the Millennial Ys think that anything can be brought to happen by way of digital devices. They want to change the world. But this time, they want the help of a keyboard.

KIZOMBA NATION DAS UMBIGADAS NOS QUINTAIS PARA O MUNDO, A KI ZOMBA TEM AJUDADO A LEVAR ANGOLA ALÉM FRON TEIRAS. PRIMEIRO, ATÉ LISBOA; AGORA, ESPALHA SE PELOS CINCO CONTINENTES. VANESSA RAMINHOS

FROM THE INITIAL UMBIGADAS IN THE ANGOLAN BACKYARDS OUT TO THE WORLD, KIZOMBA HAS HELPED ANGOLA CROSS ITS BORDERS, FIRSTLY TO LISBON AND NOW IT HAS REACHED ALL FIVE CONTINENTS. O movimento começou algures na década de 80, pouco depois da independência de Angola. O zouk antilhano – especialmente dos Kassav – chegava ao país e, quando o juntaram com o semba, surgiu um ritmo mais lento e quente, ao qual deram o nome de kizomba, palavra em kimbundo que significa festa. Os pares juntavam-se nas festas nos quintais e dançavam de uma forma sensual, a um ritmo cadenciado.

Com este período coincidiu a grande vaga de emigração angolana para Portugal – ainda hoje, a comunidade angolana no país é a quinta maior comunidade de imigrantes, com quase 20 000 indivíduos em 2013, segundo dados do Instituto Nacional de Estatística – e as tradições mantinham-se em terras lusas. Os subúrbios da capital enchiam-se de música tradicional africana; da kizomba de Eduardo Paim ao funaná de Zeca di Nha Reinalda, passando pelas mornas de Cesária Évora e pelo semba de Paulo Flores.

“A música africana é muito rica e tem muitas origens e diferenças, mas tem uma coisa em comum: o ritmo é contagiante. Mesmo não sendo cantada, sente-se”, afirma José Moura, um dos responsáveis pela Discos Príncipe, uma editora cujo objectivo é levar a música africana dos subúrbios de Lisboa o mais longe possível. Há três anos, criaram as Noites Príncipe, no Musicbox, um espaço noturno no Cais do Sodré. “O nosso objectivo era quebrar a barreira entre o centro da cidade e os subúrbios, onde estes músicos já estavam consolidados. Ao estarmos no Cais do Sodré, conseguimos chegar, sobretudo, a gente vinda de fora, a turistas [do norte da Europa ou dos Estados Unidos], que procuram estes ritmos e nos dão um feedback muito positivo”.

Em trinta anos, a kizomba espalhou-se pelo mundo, e Lisboa deixou de ser um ponto de chegada destes artistas para passar a ser um ponto de passagem. França, Espanha, Inglaterra, Polónia, Dinamarca e outros países da Europa recebem a kizomba de braços abertos, seja em clubes, nas rádios ou em festivais. E já Fernando Pessoa dizia ‘Deus quis que a terra fosse toda uma, que o mar unisse, já

It began somewhere back in the 1980s just a er Angolan independence. The Antillean zouk – especially that of Kassav – arrived in the country, mixed with semba, generating a new, slower, hotter beat which came to be known as Kizomba, a word in Kimbundo that means “party”. Couples came together in the backyard parties and danced in a sensual way to a measured beat.

At the same time, a huge wave of emigration was carrying Angolans to Portugal, as happens even today - the Angolan community is the fi h largest in Portugal, numbering almost 20,000 in 2013, according to the Portuguese National Bureau of Statistics.

Once in Portugal, these people kept up their African customs. The suburbs surrounding the capital filled up with traditional African music: from the Kizomba of Eduardo Paim to the Funaná of Zeca di Nha Reinalda, including the Mornas of Cesária Évora and the Semba of Paulo Flores.

‘African music is very rich. It has many origins and many differences but one thing it has in common is a contagious beat. Even if you don’t sing it, you feel it,’ says José Moura, one of the managers of Discos Príncipe, a label determined to carry African music from the Lisbon’s suburbs as far afield as possible. Three years ago they set up the Noites Príncipe, at Musicbox, a Lisbon nightclub in Cais do Sodré. ‘Our goal was to break down this barrier that existed between the city centre and the suburbs, where these musicians were segregated. Opening in Cais do Sodré meant we had “arrived”, especially for foreigners, the tourists [from Northern Europe or the U.S.] who were searching out these beats. We got their feedback – and it was great!’

In thirty years, Kizomba has spread across the world and Lisbon ceased to be the destination; it’s now a stopping off point before these artists head on. France, Spain, England, Poland, Denmark and other European countries are welcoming Kizomba, in clubs, on the radio and at festivals. In the words of Fernando Pessoa, ‘God willed that the Earth should be one / that the sea would unite us,

não separasse’, e a kizomba acabou por fazer a travessia do Atlântico, chegando aos Estados Unidos e à América do Sul, ao mesmo tempo que se espalhava pela Europa fora. Funde-se com a música latina, com o R’n’B e a música electrónica, e começa a trilhar o seu caminho até ao topo.

Bailando Kizomba, single de lançamento do novo álbum de Coréon Dú, Binário, conseguiu conquistar o ouvido dos americanos e chegou à 17.ª posição da tabela Billboard, na categoria Tropical, destronando nomes da música latina, como Jennifer Lopez ou Ricky Martin. Na Austrália, a música I Still Feel 4 U, do cabo-verdiano Nelson Freitas, chegou ao quarto lugar dos tops, e Bô tem Mel, música que lançou ao lado de C4 Pedro, esteve 42 semanas seguidas no Top 50 de singles portugueses. O último álbum de Anselmo Ralph, A Dor do Cupido, foi o primeiro disco de um artista africano a chegar ao primeiro lugar do top de vendas em Portugal e o videoclip de Não me Toca já conta com mais de 45 milhões de visualizações no YouTube. Para além de encher as principais salas de espectáculos em Portugal, o artista ainda esgota os bilhetes para os seus concertos no Luxemburgo, em Londres ou na Suíça, onde os emigrantes portugueses e africanos se juntam aos habitantes locais.

É só um, dois De ritmo simples e passadas básicas, a kizomba tem vido a invadir escolas de dança em todo o mundo. Considerada por produtores, músicos e bailarinos como uma ‘lufada de ar fresco’ no que à música de dança diz respeito, há cada vez mais gente a querer aprender a dançar kizomba – e cada vez mais gente a saber ensinar também. É considerada a salsa dos anos 2000. Quando Paulo Magalhães idealizou a competição ÁfricAdançar (ver caixa), nunca imaginou que oito anos depois o júri estaria a selecionar pares de 23 países em todo o mundo – ou que seriam Antonis e Hara, um par grego, os grandes vencedores da edição de 2015. “Na Grécia, onde vivemos, não temos professores [de kizomba]. Por isso, temos de viajar para o estrangeiro e tentar encontrar professores de forma a ganharmos o conhecimento necessário sobre a cultura africana, para que possamos entender

melhor a dança. Temos de entender a cultura africana para que possamos dançar, porque há uma grande ligação entre a dança, a música e a cultura”, confessou Antonis, logo após a vitória. Mas se não havia kizomba na Grécia, como é que este par a conheceu? “Num congresso de salsa, porque já dançámos salsa. Mas hoje a kizomba está por todo o lado e acabámos por nos apaixonar por ela!”, explica Hara.

Apesar de se terem cruzado com esta dança no meio mais convencional de sempre, podiam muito bem ter-se encontrado com ela no YouTube. Pares como Isabelle e Felicien, que se filmam a dançar pelas ruas de Paris, ou a madrilena Sara Lopez, protagonista do videoclip de Lento, de Daniel Santacruz, somam visualizações nas redes sociais.

“A kizomba deixou de ser moda e passou a ser um fenómeno. Quando é moda, tudo acaba, mas eu não estou a ver isso a acabar”, afirma Zé Barbosa, um dos primeiros professores de kizomba em Portugal e jurado na competição ÁfricAdançar. “Hoje, vou a Cabo Verde e vejo os cabo verdianos a ver vídeos no YouTube e a dançar da mesma forma que se dança na Europa, com outras influências e novos passos”.

Moda ou não, a verdade é que a kizomba se espalhou como uma praga... e mesmo em Praga se dança boa kizomba. “A música é muito cativante e é uma dança com muito contacto, no ritmo certo, na batida certa. Quando o bichinho da kizomba entra, ele já não sai!”, brinca Zé Barbosa. Apesar de ainda não chegar a todo o lado – pelo menos, no que diz respeito ao ensino – a kizomba fala quase todas as línguas do mundo. Na Universidade de Colónia, na Alemanha, está disponível na lista de actividades físicas do gabinete desportivo da instituição e as aulas são dadas por um professor israelita, que se cruzou com a kizomba em Edimburgo, em 2010; em Seattle, nos Estados Unidos, aprende-se a dançar kizomba no Century Ballroom, uma das principais escolas de dança da cidade; cerca de 1500 pessoas da Europa e dos Estados Unidos rumaram até ao Luxemburgo para participar no Festival de Kizomba do Luxemburgo.

not separate us’ and Kizomba has managed to cross the Atlantic, going as far as the U.S. and South America at the same time as it spread all across Europe. It’s mixed with Latin music, R’n’B, electronic music and it’s now climbing its own path to the top.

Bailando Kizomba is a track of Coréon Dú’s album, Binário that has won over the ear of the Americans arriving at the 17th place on the Billboard charts in the Tropical category, in front of great names in Latin music like Jennifer Lopez and Ricky Martin. In Australia, the song I Still Feel 4 U, by the Cape Verdean Nelson Freitas won the 4th place in the charts and Bô tem Mel, a track featuring C4 Pedro, spent 42 weeks on the Top 50 singles chart in Portugal. Anselmo Ralph’s new album A Dor do Cupido, was the first African album to hit the top spot on the Portuguese sales and the video Não me Toca has had more than 45 million views on YouTube. In addition to filling the concert venues in Portugal, his shows also sell out in Luxemburg, London and Switzerland, wherever Portuguese and African immigrants get together with the countries’ natives.

It’s just one… two…

With a simple beat and basic steps, Kizomba has invaded dance academies across the globe. Producers, musicians and dancers find it a breath of fresh air. There are more and more people wanting to learn – and more and more people knowing how to teach it as well.

It’s the salsa of the 2000’s. When Paulo Magalhães came up with the idea of a ÁfricAdançar (see box), he never imagined that 8 years later, the jury would be judging 23 couples from all over the world – or that Antonis and Hara, a Greek couple, would be the grand winners in 2015... ‘In Greece, where we live, there aren’t any Kizomba instructors. So we have to travel abroad to try and find teachers so that we might learn as much as possible about African culture so that we can understand the dance better. We had to understand it in order to be able to dance because there is a close link between the dance, the music and the culture,’ revealed Antonis,

a er winning the prize. But if there wasn’t any Kizomba in Greece, how did the couple come across it? ‘It was at a salsa conference, because we used to dance salsa. But Kizomba is all over the place these days and we fell in love with it!’ Hara explained.

Although they found out about Kizomba in the most conventional way possible, their discovery could have taken place just as easily on YouTube where couples like Isabelle and Felicien film themselves dancing through the streets of Paris, or where the Madrid native Sara Lopez, who plays the lead character in the video Lento, by Daniel Santacruz, is winning more and more views. ‘Kizomba is no longer a fad, it’s become a phenomenon. When you’re talking about fashion, it fades. I’m not seeing this fade away any time soon’, says Zé Barbosa, one of the first Kizomba instructors in Portugal and one of the ÁfricAdançar jury members. ‘Nowadays when I go to Cape Verde, I see people watching YouTube and dancing the same way they do in Europe, with new influences and new steps.’

Fad or not, the truth is that Kizomba is spreading like the plague… all the way to Prague where good Kizomba is being danced. ‘The music is bewitching and the dance has a lot of contact, the right rhythm with the right beat. Once you catch the Kizomba bug, you never get over it!’ Zé Barbosa jokes. Although it hasn’t made it completely across the globe yet, at least not as far as lessons are concerned, Kizomba speaks almost all the world’s languages. At Cologne University, in Germany, it’s on the roster of potential activities in the sports centre; the lessons are taught by an Israeli instructor who learned Kizomba in Edinburgh in 2010. In the U.S., in Seattle, you can learn Kizomba at the Century Ballroom, one of the city’s main dance academies. Around 1,500 people in the U.S. and Europe headed to Luxemburg to participate in the Kizomba festival. These are just a few examples of Kizomba venues worldwide.

Que balanço é que fazem do papel que o ÁfricAdançar teve na divulgação da kizomba pelo mundo?

Vanessa: [O ÁfricAdançar] é, sem dúvida, um grande impulsionador desta dança. A nível de competição, abriu vários caminhos. Há vários pares a concorrer que são professores no seu país de origem e o concurso permitiu um encontro da cultura angolana com esta metade do mundo. Há um grande intercâmbio de culturas, muito rico e muito bonito.

Petchú: Esta viagem que fizemos com o ÁfricAdançar permitiu o contacto com outras culturas e dar a conhecer África e Angola. Muita gente não sabia onde ficava Angola ou achava que África era um único país. A Europa tem estado a conhecer o que é África para além das guerras, para além da fome. Fala-se muito dessas coisas negativas, mas há um lado cultural que as pessoas não conheciam, e os angolanos agora têm a oportunidade de mostrar o quão bonito é o nosso país.

À parte da competição, os pares podem participar em workshops com vários professores de kizomba. O que é que eles podem aprender nestas sessões ou convosco, nas vossas aulas?

V: Tentamos que cada participante aprenda a técnica, a maior parte da essência da dança e da cultura. Muitas vezes, num workshop de uma hora não conseguimos explicar o que está por trás da dança, que representa uma cultura.

E é isso que, enquanto pioneiros nessa área, tentamos transmitir: o lado cultural, que esta gente precisa de saber, para poder sentir a dança de outra forma.

P: Durante os workshops, tentamos passar que isto não é só uma dança ou uma moda, mas sim uma cultura. Nós acabamos por passar um bocadinho disso, tentamos falar sobre o que as músicas falam e aconselhamos a que aprendam português – muitos dos concorrentes só falam inglês para além da sua língua – para que nas coreografias possam, também, transmitir o que é dito nas letras.

In addition to the competition, couples can take workshops with a series of Kizomba instructors. What do you think they can learn in these sessions, or with the two of you in your lessons?

V: We try to make sure that all the participants learn the technique, most of the essence of the dance and of the culture.

Often, in just a one-hour workshop, we can’t explain what’s behind the dance or what a culture represents. This is what, as pioneers in the field, we try to convey: the cultural side, which is what people need to learn, so that they can dance the dance differently.

P: During our workshops, we try to convey that this is not just a dance, nor just a fad, but a culture. We can usually get some of our message across. We try to talk about the meaning of the music and we suggest that the dancers learn Portuguese - many of the participants only speak their own language and English – so that their choreography might transmit what is sang in the song.

É um dos principais impulsionadores e divulgadores de duas das batidas angolanas mais conhecidas no mundo: a kizomba e o kuduro. Começou a sua carreira na década de 80, no colectivo Os Puros, ao lado de Bruno Lara e Levi Marcelino.

Na série I Love Kuduro (ver p. 34) revela que também teve alguma influência no kuduro... por acidente. “Numa festa, esqueci-me que o modo estava em tempo e não em pattern e, quando carreguei no Start, surge uma batida forte e extremamente contagiante. Tentei parar porque dei conta do erro, mas o público não gostou!”

He’s one of the main people behind the popularity of two of the most famous Angolan rhythms in the world: Kizomba and Kuduro. He started his career in the 1980s in Angola with the group Os Puros / The Pure Ones, with Bruno Lara and Levi Marcelino. In the I Love Kuduro TV series (see p. 34), he confesses that he also had some influence in the appearance of Kuduro… by accident. ‘At a party, I forgot and left the wrong setting on the synthesizer and when I pushed the start button, an extremely contagious beat came out. I tried to stop it when I discovered my mistake but the audience wouldn’t have it!’

Queremos fazer a próxima edição fora de portas, depois de, no ano passado, termos feito a final em Milão, mas ainda não posso adiantar mais pormenores. Temos também mais países a querer participar e, por isso, esperamos que sejam mais do que os 23 deste ano.

It’s been going really well! This was the fullest year yet, with representatives from all five continents and 23 countries. Who would have guessed, 8 years ago, when we thought up the idea of the first International African Dance Congress and the first Interna-

tional Kizomba Championship that we would spread the magic of Kizomba to all five continents?

How does it feel to know that you are one of the responsibles for the internationalisation of Kizomba?

As an Angolan, I feel really proud. It’s a great pleasure to be able to bring something I grew up with into Europe. Kizomba has become a movement in ballroom dancing with a huge international impact. There are studies that prove that it is the most popular ballroom dance on all five continents.

What should we expect from the championship in the future?

We’re hoping to hold the next championship outdoors. Last year, the final was held in Milan. But I can’t reveal any more details. We have more countries wanting to participate so we expect to have more than the 23 that competed this year.

From Nigeria to New York, Igee Okafor is a blogger and a men’s clothing enthusiast who is taking his first steps in the Big Apple. At 25 years of age, he is already one of the most talked about names in his country where he answers to the artistic name Kenyan Stylista. He is thought to be one of the African bloggers to keep your eye on, due not only to the good taste he displays but also his interest in promoting designers, models and other rising stars in the African fashion scene. He is in love with men’s clothing. He started his blog in order to share images of fashion and it became a sort of virtual library of trends.

With Google as his right-hand machine, he has honed his aesthetic eye and his attention to detail. He’s become a trusted trend-spotter. Several new stylistic movements in Kenya have come about following suggestions on his pages. He let us in on the fact that the trick to identify what will come into fashion next is to pay attention to the constant mutations both in fashion and popular culture, in music and in art.

Quem é o Shof Cocker? 9 Um jovem ilustrador de 28 anos, baseado em San Diego, na Califórnia, que desenha o mundo à sua maneira.

Como é que a arte entrou na tua vida? 9 Sempre fez parte da minha vida, não me lembro de viver sem ela.

Os meus pais eram artistas e exploraram diferentes formas de arte ao longo das suas carreiras. Encorajavam a minha criatividade de uma maneira que não era experienciada em casa de outras famílias. Também visitava frequentemente os estúdios de outros artistas e a escola de artes onde o meu pai era professor e, pensando nisso agora, tive muita sorte em ter sido exposto à emergente comunidade artística nigeriana nos anos 90.

Em 2014 lançaste o teu primeiro livro de banda desenhada. 9 O primeiro número de Outcasts of Jupiter foi fruto de uma campanha bem sucedida no Kickstarter e está agora disponível para leitura gratuita online. Conta a história de quatro outcasts, uma família que luta por viver num planeta que jjá não é o centro da galáxia. A inspiração para criar este número veio apenas do desejo de embarcar numa aventura criativa com o meu irmão, Shobo Cocker, que escreveu a história. Era um sonho que partilhávamos desde crianças.

Apesar de seres ilustrador e de também trabalhares com arte digital, o teu forte são mesmo os livros de banda desenhada. 9 Contar histórias é o meu forte. Pessoalmente, foco-me na banda desenhada para o fazer porque me permite uma narrativa visual, que me dá gosto desenhar e ler.

A relação com o leitor é mais apelativa, dinâmica e íntima devido ao poder da imagem na história.

Que livros de banda desenhada tens debaixo da tua almofada? 9 Semprei gostei de ler Tintin e Astérix e Obélix. Claro que, ao fazer parte da geração de 90 também li as histórias dos super-heróis da Marvel, como o Spiderman.

Mas, actualmente, sigo o trabalho de ilustradores como David Mazzucchelli, Alex Toth Mignola, com a série Hellboy, e Darwyn Cooke.

How did art come into your world?

9 It’s always been a part of my life.

I can’t remember living without art. My parents were artists and they explored different media throughout their careers.

They encouraged my creativity in a totally different way than what happened in other people’s homes. We also spent a lot of time visiting other artists and at the art school where my father taught and now that I think of it, I was very lucky to have been exposed to the emerging Nigerian art scene in the 1990s.

E para o futuro reservo mais um número do Outcasts of Jupiter, a ser publicado em 2016.

Throughout my childhood I built up an artistic partnership with my older brother: we would draw together, we would come up with stories and ideas together.

I would copy images from art books and comic books and my father would also teach me.

Although you’re an illustrator and you also work with digital art, comic books are your strong point. 9 Storytelling is my strong suit. I, personally, focus on comic books because they allow me the visual narrative that I enjoy drawing and reading. The relationship with the reader is more appealing, dynamic and intimate due to the power of the images.

What comic books are hidden under your pillow? 9 I always loved reading Tintin and Asterix and Obelix. Of course, being part of the 1990s generation, I also read the Marvel stories like Spiderman. But these days I follow the

illustrate because I have never been able to draw with straight lines. And the energy and the idiosyncrasy of the Nigerian culture are also always present in the characters’ stories.

You published your first comic book in 2014. 9 The first issue of Outcasts of Jupiter was the result of an excellent campaign by Kickstarter and it’s now available for free online. It tells the story of four outcasts, a family that is struggling to survive on a planet that is not at the centre of the galaxy. The inspiration for this issue came from the simple wish to embark on a creative journey with my brother Shobo Cocker who wrote the story. It was a dream we’d shared since we were kids.

How would you describe your comic book style? 9 I usually like stories told from the point of view of an outsider because that’s how I can relate to them. I draw stories that allow me to play with family relationships using an unusual visual aesthetic.

The theme of this issue of DIVO is youth. What is your message to young artists? 9 Study, explore, experiment and the classic: “practice makes perfect”. There are no shortcuts in art. We have to be patient. Travelling is also a good source of inspiration, discovering how we can relate to the world.

Having been born in Nigeria, how do you incorporate African influences into your art? 9 I remember the look of the city of Lagos, the Abeokuta Hills, where I spent my childhood and I try to incorporate this into the scenes that I

Alimentar o Planeta, Energia para a Vida é o mote da Exposição Universal 2015, que chega a Milão depois da passagem pela cidade espanhola de Saragoça, em 2008, onde 150 países se juntam para apresentar os seus sabores mais característicos.

António Gameiro e Paula Nascimento, vencedora do prémio WE – Women for Expo 2015, foram os arquitectos responsáveis por conceber o Pavilhão de Angola, que surge imponente à entrada da EXPO Milano, entre os pavilhões do Brasil e do Bahrein. O conceito do pavilhão parte de uma viagem à volta de um imbondeiro, desde a semente ao prato, onde as mulheres de Angola dão voz à importância da comida, do alimento para a vida. Nos restantes painéis, compõe-se uma ode às fontes do alimento: o mar, a terra, a pecuária e as florestas.

“Nós pegámos na agricultura, na pesca, na pecuária e em tudo o que faz parte do nosso quotidiano e do desenvolvimento do país, enquanto povo para a sobrevivência, e transformámos isso numa exposição que está a ser muito bem vista”, refere a comissária da EXPOAngola 2015, a Engenheira Albina Assis Africano. Com uma média de seis mil visitantes por dia, a gastronomia angolana surpreende-os, sobretudo o funge, alimento aglutinador dos angolanos.

“Tendo em conta o tema do nosso pavilhão [alimentação e cultura], nós resolvemos mostrar que, culturalmente, a nossa alimentação tem como base o funge, que nos une”, reforça a comissária.

No segundo andar do pavilhão a confecção de pratos como a moamba e o calulu ganha especial relevo, ao lado da festa dos gingongos (gémeos), uma festa que se celebra em todas as regiões de Angola. “Gritar os gémeos” surge em diferentes vídeos que mostram aquilo que mais une os angolanos à volta da mesa: a sentada familiar.

No terceiro e último andar surgem as inovações agro-alimentares, que têm sido uma grande aposta para o desenvolvimento do país. Neste piso, miúdos e graúdos podem ver quais os alimentos produzidos no país e qual a importância do seu controlo. Alice Berenguel, a famosa avó Ximinha da Televisão Pública de Angola (TPA), usa o semba e a kizomba para mostrar às crianças, que podem aprender mais sobre frutas tropicais e construir a base para uma alimentação saudável.

O espaço da exposição é complementado por dois restaurantes dirigidos pelos Chefs Luís Kitaba e Elsa Viana. O primeiro encontra-se na base do edifício e explora os sabores tradicionais angolanos; o segundo, encontra-se no quarto andar e faz uma abordagem gourmet da gastronomia, onde a fusão dos alimentos proporciona novas sensações gustativas. ‘A slow food está a voltar a entrar na moda e agora temos a oportunidade de mostrar os sabores de Angola, onde sempre se confeccionou comida de forma lenta e condimentada’, refere Elsa Viana, a Chef responsável pelo restaurante do quarto andar.

Um pavilhão para o qual é um gosto olhar mostra o caminho certo quanto aos valores alimentares baseados numa comida saudável, fazendo pensar e ensinando, sempre com sabor a Angola.

A er seven years, Expo has once again returned to Europe – the last time was in Zaragoza in 2008 – and this time with a taste of the different countries as its theme: Feeding the Planet: Energy for Life hosts exhibits from 150 countries. The Angolan Pavilion rises majestically between those of Brazil and Bahrain near the entrance to the fair.

The pavilion was designed by WE-Women for Expo winner Paula Nascimento in conjunction with Antonio Gameiro.

The pavilion revolves around the idea of a trip around the baobab tree from the seed to the plate. At the entrance a stylized baobab is seen with Angolan women giving voice to the importance of food, the sustenance for life. Panels surround you portraying the food that sustains life: the ocean, land, livestock and the forest.

The ExpoAngola Commissioner for 2015, Albina Assis Africano, explains that they have taken ‘agriculture, fisheries and livestock, all of which make up part of our daily life and part of our development as a country and turned this into an exhibit that has been extremely well received’ by an average of six thousand visitors per day. The biggest surprise for the visitors is the Angolan food. ‘Funge’ (a paste with a consistency similar to polenta that is most commonly made from mandioc flour) is the food that brings Angolans together: ‘we decided to make funge, in homage to the theme of the pavilion – food and culture – we thought that we should display the food that is the staple of our cuisine. It’s what brings us together’ the commissioner explained.

The second floor of the pavilion gives special attention to the preparation of traditional dishes such as Moamba and Calulu as well as to the Gingongos Festival that is celebrated all over Angola. ‘Gritar os gémeos’ (the twins celebrations) appear in all the videos showing what brings Angolans intimately around the table: the family gathering.

The third and top storey of the building includes a display about the agro-food innovation that Angola is making as part of its drive for development. There, young and old alike can appreciate the importance of controlling foodstuffs, as well as the products that are made in their country. The children can learn about tropical fruit and also discover the foundation of a healthy diet. Alice Berenguel, the Angolan Public Television star known as Avó Ximinha, entertains the children and teaches them about the food from the earth as she sings songs with Semba and Kizomba beats.

In addition to the exhibit, the pavilion has two restaurants. One on the ground floor of the building is run by Chef Luís Kitaba and it serves more traditional Angolan food. On the top floor there is a gourmet option where fusion is the fashion whereby new taste sensations are created. Elsa Vianna is the chef here. She tells us how curious she finds it that “slow food is coming back into fashion whereas in Angola we have always been cooking slowly and with plenty of seasoning.” This is how Angola is demonstrating the right way to achieve a healthy diet. This pavilion itself is literally delicious to look at. It encourages you to think and to learn by way of offering you a teasing little taste of Angola.

A DIVO tentou descobrir aquilo que um gentleman nunca pode deixar em casa, mas Lougè foi muito prático ao responder “as chaves” e deixou ao homem DIVO um bom conselho: “if you’re going to wear a suit... wear a suit”.

Lougè Delcy, is Haitian-American, a blogger, stylist and photographer. He is enraptured with all that catches his eye, so long as it radiates style. Fashion wandered into his life by way of television – he remembers watching models strut the catwalk wearing collection a er collection. He describes it as the “twilight zone of fashion.” His concept of style transcends clothing. It even includes food, architecture, culture, people and places – everything can potentially serve as inspiration – and this translates into his own personal style. He describes himself as ‘adaptable and subject to his mood, the

weather and the occasion, “because sometimes simple track pants are the perfect outfit.”

The blog, Dapper Lou, is one of the top daily online fashion and culture blogs. It was designed as a platform for sharing urban looks, good taste in images, emerging trends and, essentially, different artistic perspectives – “because the world has many more dimensions than people might possibly think”.

Não se pode negar que no florescente mercado das celebridades estilistas de moda, os músicos arrumaram a um canto os seus rivais do cinema. Basta pensar nas marcas de Beyoncé Knowles (House of Deréon), Kanye West (DW), Pharrell (Billionaire Boys Club), Rihanna (para a River Island), Nicki Minaj (para o Kmart) e Lil’Wayne (Trukfit), para perceber que o streetwear e a indústria discográfica são um casamento perfeito. Mas a actriz americana Rosario Dawson está a mostrar os seus trunfos neste combate desigual pela coroa do mundo da moda – a prová-lo está o lançamento do Studio One Eighty Nine, o seu projecto de moda sustentável.

Em colaboração com a sua amiga Abrima Ervwiah, estrela do filme Sin City, apresenta uma nova marca com uma linha de casual wear tingida à mão por artesãos do Mali e do Gana. A fusão entre consciência social e design irrepreensível é uma das formas como esta nova casa de moda promete eclipsar a concorrência. Outra é a criação de uma plataforma online com a missão de promover a cultura Africana e a criatividade inspirada em África.

Um elenco de estrelas conhecidas aparece no Instagram durante a cerimónia de abertura deste projecto social, que já recebeu prémios pelo seu carácter de moda de rosto humanitário. Cantores como Erykah Badu e Seal posaram para as fotos promocionais, bem como Jessica Alba e Zoe Kravitz, entre muitos outros amigos convidados. O slogan “Veste bem, sente-se bem e faz bem” (‘Look good, feel good, and do good’) resume bem o ambiente vibrante desta celebração da moda ética.

Se pensarmos na longa história de afro-centrismo dos negros americanos, é de certa forma surpreendente que a iniciativa de Dawson e Erwiah seja um caso único. Quem pode esquecer as camisas à samakaka de Stokely Carmichael, e outros elementos do Black Power, provando que a moda pode ser uma declaração política? Construir uma marca de moda para ajudar à afirmação de África no mundo pode parecer um pouco singular e desfasado no tempo. Por outro lado, ao contribuir para iniciativas como o programa City of Joy Vagina Warrior, da República Democrática do Congo, o Studio One Eighty Nine está a apoiar uma mudança revolucionária na vida das mulheres africanas de hoje e, ao mesmo tempo, a ajudar a criar os líderes de amanhã. E, decididamente, não há nada de antiquado nisso.

THE HOLLYWOOD STAR’S NEW AFRICA CENTERED FASHION LABEL BLENDS SOCIAL CONSCIENCE WITH STYLE CONSCIOUSNESS. There’s no denying that in the booming market of celebrity fashion designers, musicians have k.o.’ed their thespian rivals.

Think of Beyoncé Knowles (House of Deréon), Kanye West (DW), Pharrell (Billionaire Boys Club), Rihanna (for River Island), Nicki Minaj (for Kmart), Lil’Wayne (Trukfit), and you soon get the picture that streetwear and record labels are a match made in heaven. But American actor Rosario Dawson has come out punching in this unequal battle for the clothing line crown, with the launch of her sustainable fashion project, Studio One Eighty Nine. A collaboration between the Sin City star and her close friend, Abrima Erwiah, the new label features casual wear designs hand-dyed by artisans in Mali and Ghana. Merging together social consciousness with style savvy is one way that the fashion house promises to outshine the competition, and another is the creation of an online platform with a mission to promote African culture and African-inspired creativity.

A cast of well-known faces appear in Instagram photos taken at the April ‘opening ceremony’ of the social enterprise, which has already won awards for its fashion-based humanitarianism. Singers Erykah Badu and Seal posed for the promotional snaps, as did fellow guests Jessica Alba and Zoe Kravitz among many other friends. The tag-line ‘Look good, feel good, and do good’ summed up the vibe at the ethical fashion festivities.

Given the long history of Afro-centrism among US blacks, it’s surprising that Dawson and Erwiah’s transnational initiative is so unique. And who can forget the Black Power fashion statement of the dashiki, as worn by Stokely Carmichael and other political activists? There’s something quaint and old-school about building a fashion brand on the idea of collaboration for African empowerment. On the other hand, by contributing to such initiatives as the City of Joy’s Vagina Warrior programme, located in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Studio One Eighty Nine is supporting revolutionary change in today’s African women’s lives, and at the same time helping to grow tomorrow’s leaders. And there’s nothing yesterday about that.

Saturday, noon. Lunch is still a long way off and the Plaza del Salvador is full of people in cafés drinking beer and eating tapas. In Seville, the social routine revolves around tapas. They’re neither a tradition nor a hobby. They are a constant throughout the city, each and every day, from midday to midnight.

LET THE CITY STROLL PAST ‘Going out for tapas’ is the best way to get to know the barrios in Seville. Avoid the anxiety of walking as far as possible to see as much as possible and sit down. Stop and let the city parade in front of your eyes. The selection is wide. There are innumerable outdoor cafés at Alameda de Hércules, Macarena or along the riverside at Calle Bétis in Triana. Try the breaded fried dogfish tapas and a beer whilst the sportsmen work out kayaking in the waters of the Guadalquivir.

Do lado oposto a Triana, na margem esquerda do rio, concentra-se a maior parte do centro histórico e monumentos da cidade. A Giralda, como é conhecida a torre da catedral, é o símbolo de Sevilha, antigo minarete de mesquita, herança do longo período islâmico no sul da Península Ibérica. A torre é o que se destaca da grande catedral, da qual é difícil ter uma visão de conjunto porque está rodeada de edifícios. No interior é que se sente a sua grandiosidade, é um dos maiores templos religiosos do mundo.

Para desempoeirar de tantas camadas de tradições culturais: romanos, mouros, século de ouro espanhol; o poder local empenhou-se na construção de um projecto arquitectónico na Praça da Encarnação, que rompe com as linhas clássicas do centro histórico. A cidade estranhou, mas já integrou o Metropol Parasol, que pela sua forma peculiar é conhecido como Las Setas – Os Cogumelos. Lá em cima, um miradouro oferece larga vista sobre toda a cidade.

como Carmen e As Bodas de Fígaro. O romantismo encontrou em Sevilha uma fonte de exotismo e orientalismo que alimentou vários séculos de libretos de ópera.

Hoje, o repertório musical da Andaluzia e Sevilha é ocupado sobretudo pelo flamenco e sevilhanas. A cidade canta e dança o ano inteiro, tendo o seu ponto alto na Feria de Sevilla. Todos os anos na primavera, dezenas de milhares de pessoas juntam-se no recinto da Feria para celebrar a cultura e a vida ao ritmo dos passos das sevilhanas, dança que segue uma coreografia em quatro partes e que está associada ao emblemático vestido pontuado por bolas coloridas e com folhos na saia e nas mangas.

A outra grande festa da cidade é a Semana Santa, que faz parar Sevilha quando o trânsito é condicionado para dar passagem a mais de 100 procissões durante a semana. Alguns destes cortejos religiosos integram milhares de pessoas e prolongam-se por muitas horas, como a procissão dedicada à virgem Esperança Macarena que começa às zero horas de sexta-feira santa e só volta a entrar na igreja às duas da tarde! Uma entre várias maratonas de uma festa muito popular com contornos que excedem largamente a esfera religiosa.

Across from Triana, on the le bank of the river, you’ll find the largest concentration of historical monuments. Giralda is the name of the cathedral’s church tower and it’s the symbol of Seville. This former Moorish minaret is a vestige of the long-lived Islamic control of the southern reaches of the Iberian Peninsula. The tower is the part of the cathedral that attracts the most attention. It’s hard to get a view of the whole cathedral as it’s surrounded by buildings. It’s inside that you’ll feel its grandiosity. It’s one of the largest religious monuments in the world. Recently, in order to brush off the dust of centuries of Roman, Moorish and Spanish Golden Century culture, the local government went out of its way to bring a breath of fresh air to the city with its project for the Plaza de la Encarnación which is totally at odds with the classical lines of the historical centre. The city was a bit put off at first but has come to begrudgingly accept the Metropol Parasol, whose peculiar shape has earned it the moniker Las Setas – The Mushrooms. From the top, there’s a lookout with a panoramic view over the city.

and The Marriage of Figaro. Romanticism discovered a source of the oriental and the exotic in Seville that has inspired many operatic librettos over the centuries.

Today, however, Seville’s musical repertoire is mostly dedicated to Flamenco and Sevillanas. The city sings and dances all year round, with the highpoint being the Feria de Sevilla or the Seville April Fair. Each year in the spring, tens of thousands of people converge on the fairgrounds to celebrate life and culture whilst dancing the steps of the Sevillanas. The dance is choreographed in four parts and is symbolised by the characteristic clothing decorated with colourful spots with pleated sleeves and skirts The other great festival in the city is Holy Week when the city practically comes to a standstill. Traffic is cut off to make space for more than 100 processions that take place during the week. Some of these religious events gather thousands of people and last for many hours. The procession of Our Lady of Hope Macarena starts at midnight on Good Friday and only returns to the church at 2:00 pm! It’s one of the many marathon festivities whose significance far transcends the religious.
