A sua recente passagem por Portugal, onde veio apresentar a sua faceta musical — não de músico, como o próprio faz questão de ressalvar — registou um sucesso notável, com parte da imprensa portuguesa a render-se à sua música e à sua presença em palco. It is with great pride we bring to you in this month’s cover , a multi-faceted, multi-platform Angolan artist. With a background as wide as video, theatre, cinema and radio, he no doubt has an alternative approach to Art but quite surprisingly has been collecting a remarkable success —far from being mainstream, of course. His recent performance in Portugal has created a buzz among part of the portuguese press when he came to show his musical work — without considering himself a musician, as he often points out. But after all, music is in his roots: ‘That’s what I always wanted to do’, he declared in the interview he gave to our journalist Catarina Homem Marques. An interview worth reading.

She always knew that she wanted to be independent, but she never thought that her independence would come by way of a plane ticket to another country, another continent. In Portuguese lands, she pursued the career that she had started three years earlier in Angola, right from the moment that she had gone with a friend to a casting in a model agency. th

Desde cedo que queria ser independente, mas nunca pensou que a sua independência chegaria na forma de um bilhete de avião, para outro país e outro continente. Em terras lusas continuou um percurso iniciado em Angola, três anos antes, quando acompanhou uma amiga a um casting para uma agência de modelos.

Her career has allowed her to meet more people, make contacts and also travel.

In 2009 she was invited to be

part of the Makamba Hotel cast. In spite of the afro wigs she used in the show to portray Domingas, an extravagant hairdresser, Izilda has opted for a daring look, which her booker then took to another level and which eventually became her trademark.

Em 2009, foi convidada a fazer parte do elenco de Makamba Hotel. Apesar da peruca afro da série, que usava para compor a personagem Domingas, uma extravagante cabeleireira, Izilda adoptou inicialmente um look arrojado, que a sua booker resolveu levar a um outro nível, tornando-se hoje a sua imagem de marca.

The opportunity came from a casting... that she didn’t even want to go to: ‘I didn’t want to go, but my booker convinced me, saying that careers are very short in the Fashion business. I ended up going, but was only half-hearted. A few weeks later, they called me saying that I had gotten the job. I only truly believed it a!er shooting the first show!’

Three years later and the show is still running. She now wants to further her career as a TV host , both training newcomers and working on new projects.

A oportunidade surgiu num casting... ao qual não queria ir: “Eu não queria ir, mas a minha booker convenceu-me, dizendo que a carreira na moda era muito curta.

Acabei por ir, mesmo contrariada, e ao fim de duas semanas ligaram-me a dizer que tinha ficado com o trabalho. Só acreditei depois de ter gravado o primeiro programa!”. Três anos depois, o programa continua no ar, e é na apresentação que quer continuar a crescer, tanto em formação como em novos projectos.

Dez anos depois de sair de Angola, regressou para participar na Angola Fashion Week. Quando saiu do avião, em Luanda, as diferenças eram notáveis: “Foi um choque! A cidade está a crescer, e não só em tamanho. Angola é um país do futuro, todos os caminhos vão lá dar! Quero voltar e fazer parte desse crescimento também!”.

Antes de sair de Angola, nunca teve oportunidade de visitar outras províncias, que só conhece de fotografias.

Mas conhecer todo o país faz parte dos seus planos. “Quando eu agora for a Angola, não quero ficar só em Luanda. Quero ir mais para o interior, quero ir mais para o litoral, quero viajar, quero conhecer! Quero fazer aquilo que faço cá: acampar, com uma mochila, o saco-cama e uma tenda!”

Angola is a country of the future, all roads lead to it! I also want to be a part of this growth!’

Before leaving Angola, she’d never really had

the chance to visit other regions of the country, which she mainly knew of through photographs. But getting to know all of the country is one of her plans. ‘When I next visit Angola, I don’t want to just stay in Luanda. I want to go to the interior, to the coast, I want to travel, I want to explore! I want to do all the things I can possibly do when I’m there: go camping with a rucksack, a sleeping bag and a tent!’

Porque considera este o disco da sua vida? Foi o primeiro álbum que consegui ouvir do princípio ao fim. É um álbum que se põe a tocar e não é preciso saltar nenhuma música. Ouve-se da primeira à última. E porque foi um dos primeiros que me despertou para esta coisa de estudar música, até porque foi o primeiro disco pelo qual me interessei por decorar e perceber as letras. Na altura comecei a estudar inglês e esta era uma das formas mais simples de entender o inglês, ou seja, eu falava cantando.

Why is this the most important album of your life? It was the first record that I was able to listen to from beginning to end. You start playing it and you don’t have to skip any of the songs. You listen to it from the very first to the very last track. And because it was also one of the first records that inspired me to study music. I was, for the first time, interested in learning all of the songs off by heart and eventually understood the lyrics too. At the time I had started learning English and this was one of the easiest ways for me to understand it, I spoke whilst I sang.

Qual é a sua música preferida neste disco? Baby Can I Hold You, mais conhecida por Sorry, era a que todo o mundo conhecia. Mas da que eu gostava mesmo era do Fast Car, apesar da letra ser muito simples e fácil de perceber. Soube depois que a música se tornou um sucesso mundial depois da apresentação num concerto de celebração do aniversário de Nelson Mandela.

Como descobriu este disco? Os meus pais sempre tiveram uma paixão muito grande pelos livros e pelos discos e, como tal, tínhamos uma grande colecção de LPs. A par dos discos do Bob Marley, o disco da Tracy Chapman era muito ouvido lá em casa. Descobri-o em 1990, tinha na altura 12 anos, e fui-me apaixonando cada vez mais pela obra da Tracy.

Os seus amigos também gostavam da Tracy Chapman? Os meus amigos também começaram a ouvir bastante este disco, até porque a Tracy é uma exímia guitarrista.

Foi nesta altura que começámos a aprender a tocar viola, e ouvir estas canções era também um exercício, porque é um disco basicamente de voz e guitarra.

Este disco influenciou de alguma forma a sua carreira? A Tracy Chapman é dona de uma voz única, com um tom muito grave, e tem uma forma muito simples de interpretar os temas. Consegue passar muito bem uma mensagem, sem se preocupar com grandes efeitos vocais. Admiro essa qualidade nela e influenciou-me bastante esta ideia de que é mais importante passar a mensagem do que exibir as qualidades vocais.

Depois do primeiro disco, o sucesso de Tracy Chapman não voltou a ser o mesmo.

Ainda assim, continua a acompanhar a carreira desta artista? Continuo, e acho que os restantes discos dela são igualmente bons, mas infelizmente não tiveram o mediatismo do primeiro. Claro que o primeiro é um verdadeiro clássico da música. Em qualquer parte do mundo é unanimemente considerado um clássico da música.

Lembra-se do que sentiu quando ouviu este disco pela primeira vez? Senti uma alegria muito grande. Sobretudo depois de perceber que, apesar do timbre masculino, era afinal uma mulher que estava a cantar. Naquela altura, o mercado feminino da música em Angola não era como hoje, em que temos muitas mulheres de sucesso. Foi bom saber que uma voz com aquele potencial todo era feminina e que estava a começar a dominar a cena mundial. Depois, o facto de ser uma mulher negra foi também muito importante para mim.

Consegue identificar alguém em Angola com um registo parecido? Em Angola estamos a conseguir criar uma característica muito forte em termos de vozes femininas. Mas acho que a Irina Vasconcelos, vocalista dos Café Negro, é a que mais se assemelha ao registo da Tracy, porque também tem uma voz grave, mas com uma personalidade e identidade muito próprias. Acho que tem um potencial parecido.

Ainda ouve este disco? Sem dúvida. É um disco para toda a vida. Eu ouço, o meu filho vai ouvir, os filhos do meu filho vão ouvir, nunca cansa. É um clássico, à semelhança do Frank Sinatra, que não morre nunca. Este é, aliás, um privilégio dos artistas, que é o de se manterem vivos em espírito e na obra que deixam.

What is your favourite song from this album? Baby Can I Hold you, better known as Sorry, was the one that everybody knew. But the one I enjoyed the most was Fast Car, even though the lyrics were very simple and easy to understand. I later realised that this theme became an international hit a!er it was performed at a Nelson Mandela tribute concert.

How did you come across the album? My parents always had a passion for books and music, so we had a big collection of LPs. Together with Bob Marley’s records, Tracy got lots of playtime back home. I discovered it in 1990 when I was 12, I and began to fall deeper and deeper in love with Tracy’s work.

Did your friends listen to Tracy Chapman too? They also started listening a lot to this particular album, also because Tracy is such an outstanding guitar player. By that time we started learning how to play the guitar and listening to these songs was part of our practice, since it’s basically a vocal and guitar record.

Did this album influence your music at all? She has a unique voice, a very deep and low tone, and a very simple way of performing her music. She can get her message across, whilst not worrying unduly about vocal effects. I greatly admire that quality in her. And the idea that it’s more important to get the message across than showing off your vocal ability, had a big influence on me.

Tracy Chapman has never recapture the success of her first album. Do you still listen to her work? I do and I think that the rest of her albums are equally as good, but unfortunately they haven’t sold as well as the first. Of course, the first is a true classic. Anywhere you go, it’s unanimously considered a musical classic.

Do you remember what you felt when you first heard this record? An enormous joy. Especially a!er realising that in spite of the somewhat masculine voice, it was in fact a woman singing. At that time, the market for female performers in Angola was not like it is today, where we now have a lot of successful female artists. It was good to know that a voice of such uniqueness was starting to conquer the international music scene. Also, her being a black woman later came to be an important factor for me.

Is there anybody in Angola with a similar sound? In Angola we have been able to encourage and develop some very strong women’s voices. But I think Irina Vasconcelos, the lead singer of the band Café Negro, is the one who most resembles Tracy Chapman.

She also has a deep voice but with her won style and identity. I think she has a similar potential as well.

Do you still listen to this album? Without a doubt. It’s an album to listen to all your life long. I listen to it, my son will listen to it as well. Hopefully, his children will also listen to the record. It’s music that you never tire of. It’s a classic, much like Frank Sinatra, whose music will never die. This is, by the way, a great privilege for artists, they stay alive in spirit and in the body of work they leave behind.

TRÊS DIAS POR ANO, TODOS OS CAMINHOS DA LITERATURA EM PORTUGUÊS VÃO DAR À PÓVOA DE VARZIM. A CULPA É DO FESTIVAL CORRENTES D’ESCRITAS, UMA ESPÉCIE DE REALIDADE PARALELA ONDE A REALIDADE SUPERA SEMPRE A FICÇÃO.

DURING THREE DAYS EACH YEAR, ALL ROADS IN PORTUGUESE-WRITTEN LITERATURE LEAD TO PÓVOA DE VARZIM. THAT IS DUE TO THE CORRENTES D’ESCRITAS FESTIVAL, A SORT OF PARALLEL UNIVERSE WHERE FACT ALWAYS WINS OUT OVER FICTION.

As Correntes d’Escritas, o maior festival literário que acontece em Portugal, na Póvoa de Varzim, decorreu este ano entre 20 e 22 de Fevereiro. Já na sua 15a edição, reúne dezenas de escritores de língua portuguesa – de Portugal a Angola, de Moçambique ao Brasil – e alguns de expressão espanhola. A sensação que paira em torno do festival é que só nesta Póvoa de Varzim invadida de escrita se poderia ouvir o escritor Afonso Cruz a contar como recebeu uma carta do leitor que encontrou um dos únicos dois exemplares (em 5000) do livro Para Onde Vão os Guarda Chuvas, que tem uma característica especial que o distingue de todos os outros – e, já agora, que esse leitor se encontra preso por homicídio. É também nas Correntes d’Escritas que o escritor moçambicano Ungulani Ba Ka Khosa pode contar como encontrou Diniz Machado e O Que Diz Molero? na juventude, para logo depois o perder, de empréstimo em empréstimo, entre amigos: “Nunca mais vi Molero”, conta. Mas aprendeu com ele que a literatura não tem de ser sagrada e que, com um livro assim, “podia entrar na literatura sem cerimónias e ir até à varanda arrotar com alegria.” Ou simplesmente lembrar como ficou com uma pergunta por fazer a José Saramago: “Queria perguntar-lhe se a oralidade africana que conheceu nas traduções que fez dos livros da literatura africana de língua francesa, e que nos permitiu conhecer as primeiras independências, não o influenciou na escrita”. É neste espaço imenso de ficções, que superam a realidade, que um prémio – o Prémio Literário Casino da Póvoa/Correntes d’Escritas – é entregue a um escritor que está desempregado: Manuel Jorge Marmelo, pelo livro Uma Mentira Mil Vezes Repetida. E que, todos os dias, se juntam para jantar e trocar experiências os escritores de geografias distantes que por alguns dias se constituem em comunidade num lugar que só pode ser imaginado. Mesmo que seja real, claro.

Correntes d’Escritas/Streams of Writings, the largest literary festival in Portugal, took place this year between 20th and 22nd February in Póvoa de Varzim. Dozens of Portuguese language writers gathered – from Portugal to Angola, from Mozambique to Brazil – for this 15th year running, as well as some Spanish language writers as well. The feeling you get is that only in Póvoa de Varzim could you hear the novelist Afonso Cruz tell us about how a letter from a reader led him to find one of only two examples (out of 5000) of his book Para Onde Vão os Guarda Chuvas/Where Do Umbrellas Go, that is different from all the rest – and by the way, this reader is in prison for murder. It’s at Streams of Writings too that Mozambican writer Ungulani Ba Ka Khosa, tells how he discovered Diniz Machado and his O Que Diz Molero?/What Does Molero Say? as a young boy and he went on to lose it a"er lending it out to so many times to his mates: ‘I never saw Molero again’. But he learnt that literature doesn’t have to be sacred and that, with a book like this, ‘you can slip into literature with out any stuffiness and even go out on the balcony to burp happily.’ Or to hear him lament that he never got the chance to ask Saramago: ‘I wanted to ask him whether the African oral tradition he encountered when translating francophone African literature – which brought the first African independence movements to our attention – might have influenced his writing.’

In this vast space of fiction, that surpasses reality, a prize, the Casino of Póvoa Literary Award/ Streams of Writings, was awarded to an unemployed writer – Manuel Jorge Marmelo, for his book Uma Mentira Mil Vezes Repetida/A Lie Repeated a Thousandfold. And every day, people gather to exchange stories of writers from distant geographical places, who for a few days converge to form a community in a space that can only be imagined. Even if it’s real, of course.

Estreia no próximo Festival de Cannes: Grace de Monaco, do realizador francês Olivier Dahan, sobre a Princesa de Hollywood que chegou a realeza do Mónaco.

“O papel das mulheres é serem um pilar para a sua família” – esta é uma das mais famosas citações de Grace Kelly, consagrada actriz de Hollywood que viria a casar-se, em 1956, com o príncipe Rainier III do Mónaco, depois de o ter conhecido no Festival de Cannes. E poderia ser muito bem o mote que Olivier Dahan escolheu para levar avante o filme biográfico Grace de Monaco.

Filha de pai irlandês e mãe alemã, Grace Patricia Kelly nasceu em Filadélfia, em 1929, e sagrou-se como ‘realeza de Hollywood’ na década de 50, especialmente pelos seus papéis nos filmes de Alfred Hitchcock, como Chamada para a Morte, Janela Indiscreta e Ladrão de Casaca. Em 1954, recebeu o Oscar de Melhor Actriz pela sua prestação como Georgie Elgin no filme Para Sempre, de George Seaton. E em 1956 entrava para a corte das cabeças coroadas, como princesa do pequeno Estado à beira do Mediterrâneo.

Trinta e dois anos depois da sua morte, Grace de Monaco surge como um tributo à actriz-princesa.

Focada no período posterior à sua passagem de realeza de Hollywood a realeza do Mediterrâneo, a biopic conta com a australiana Nicole Kidman no papel de Grace Kelly, e Tim Roth enquanto Rainier III. A película desenvolve-se em 1962, ano em que o principado monegasco se encontra em forte agitação face às ameaças de anexação por parte da França. É durante este período de crise na corte que Alfred Hitchcock oferece à actriz oscarizada um milhão de dólares para participar em Marnie.

Depois de ter visto a sua estreia adiada – chegou a estar prevista para 27 de Novembro do ano passado, ainda a tempo da corrida aos Oscars – devido a divergências criativas entre o realizador e o produtor da película, Harvey Weinstein, Grace de Monaco está de malas aviadas para a cidade de Cannes, onde tem estreia marcada para 14 de Maio (o Festival decorre na Croisette até dia 25).

Para além de Nicole Kidman e Tim Roth, o filme conta ainda com a participação de Frank Lagella, Parker Posey e Paz Vega, no papel da cantora lírica grega Maria Callas.

Set to première at the Cannes Festival, Grace de Monaco, by French director Olivier Dahan, recounts the life of the Hollywood princess who became royalty in Monaco.

“Women’s natural role is to be a pillar of the family.” This is one of the most famous quotes by Grace Kelly, Hollywood actress who would marry Prince Rainier III of Monaco in 1956, a!er meeting him at the Cannes Festival. The same motto is used by Olivier Dahan in his biopic Grace de Monaco. Daughter of an Irish father and a German mother, Grace Patricia Kelly was born in Philadelphia, in 1929. She became ‘Hollywood royalty’ in the fi!ies, especially for her roles in Hitchcock’s movies: Dial “M” for Murder, Rear Window and To Catch a Thief. In 1954 she won the Oscar for Best Actress, for her performance as Georgie Elgin in The Country Girl, directed by George Seaton. And in 1956 she joined the crowned-heads family as the Princess of the small State by the Mediterranean.

Thirty-two years a!er her death, this movie is a tribute to the actress-princess.

Focusing mainly on her life a!er her transformation from Hollywood diva to Mediterranean royalty, the biopic features Nicole Kidman as Grace Kelly and Tim Roth as Rainier III. It takes place in 1962, when the Principality of Monaco is in turmoil due to annexation threats by France. During this crisis in the royal court, Alfred Hitchcock offers the Oscar-winning actress a million dollars to star in Marnie.

A!er seeing its release date delayed (it had originally been due out on the 27th November 2013, in time for the Oscars), due to creative differences between the director and the producer, Harvey Weinstein, Grace de Monaco will finally premiere in Cannes, where it will be released on the 14th of May (the Festival will run in the Croisette until the 25th).

Apart from Nicole Kidman and Tim Roth, other cast members include Frank Langella, Parker Posey and Paz Vega, in the role of Greek soprano Maria Callas.

Mas ir até ao Brasil para acompanhar tudo em carne e osso não é para todos, e se é daqueles para quem esperar pelo momento de ligar o televisor e começar a ver as transmissões não é suficiente, prepare-se para o melhor aquecimento possível, com o jogo 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil. “É o jogo mais atmosférico que alguma vez fizemos”, declarou Matt Prior, o produtor da EA Sports responsável por esta versão temática de um dos maiores sucessos de vendas da marca.

Isto porque, tal como acontece com os jogos de um campeonato mundial, a diversão não é só para aqueles que já costumam gostar de futebol – este jogo também pretende chegar a toda a gente, mesmo àqueles que não costumam aproximar-se de um comando para passar umas horas a jogar às versões clássicas (e anuais) do FIFA, nesta versão com 203 selecções sancionadas pela próprias FIFA, 7469 jogadores, 21 novos estádios e cerca de 15 horas de comentários acrescentados, além de festejos feitos de propósito nas várias cidades do mundo. THE MASCOT AND THE BALL

It's a long and prestigious tradition to uphold – the first mascot, the lion Willie of England, appeared in the 1966 World Cup. Following Willie came the Mexican Juanito, the Germans Tip and Tap, the Spanish Naranjito, and Footix, the French rooster. Mascots are intended to bring luck and to represent the host country and most of all – to attract merchandising proceeds. The name of Fuleco, the three-banded armadillo (in Portuguese the 'ball-shaped armadillo') is a portmanteau joining "football" with "ecology". Naming the ball is another longstanding tradition too. For the first time, this name was chosen with the help of fans. Brazuca (pejorative term referring to Brazilian immigrants abroad) received 77.8% of the 1,119,539 votes cast, far outdistancing the other, more dancing options, Bossa Nova and Carnavalesca. So the Brazuca will replace Jabulani, the ball that rolled at the 2014 World Cup in South Africa.

ONCE UPON A TIME, THERE WAS A RESTAURANT IN LUANDA HIDDEN AWAY BEHIND THE TREES. MANY HAD HEARD OF IT, BUT FEW REALLY KNEW WHERE IT ACTUALLY WAS. TO GET THERE, YOU HAD TO TAKE THE DIRT ROAD FROM BALEIZÃO TO CIDADE ALTA, THEN TURN TOWARDS FORTALEZA.

The trail to the restaurant is hard to make out and maybe that’s why it’s visited mainly by tourists. It dates back to the last years of the war. In 1998, Elsa Costa, a journalist passionate about travel and gastronomy, decided to turn those white walls, reminiscent of Portugal, into a house where she could receive friends and cook for them. They say that the flavours were so tasty that Elsa’s reputation soon spread throughout the city and the restaurant attracted more and more customers.

The menu, with no tolerance for fads, has remained unaltered for years. It features only the classics: a handful of fish recipes and a few other meat dishes. There are ‘pataniscas’ (deep-fried cod pancakes), duck rice and codfish with cream.

The less obvious dishes are the two recipes that have brought fame to the restaurant: the first is Grouper Rice. In the pan, the fish first blends with the flavours of onion and tomato. Next it’s mixed with parsley and then shellfish is added and all of it is simmered with garlic. And to finish, a slight dash of anise flavoured Pernod is added with the delicate touch of an alchemist. The dish is served on a generous platter, mindful of famished visitors.

The other dish is much simpler: a tenderloin steak, of perfect thickness, seasoned with nothing more than salt and lemon. It sits for a few hours and is then seasoned with a black pepper paste, specially made in-house. Then it goes into

the pan. Gourmets may find this too prosaic. Those of less affected tastes, see the Pepper Steak as a wonderful version of a home-cooked and unpretentious dish, so difficult to find in Luanda nowadays.

These then, are the highlights of the menu. The wine list holds no particular surprises, although the South African reds and whites do standout. There are some delicious dessert curiosities, especially for ice cream lovers. Namely the Caxinde (lemon-grass), Cinnamon and Ginger ice cream – a homemade delicacy, perfectly suited for warm summer nights.

This is, by the way, the spirit of the restaurant created by Elsa Costa: to make everyone feel welcome, as if they were dining at a friend’s backyard. The tables, all outdoors and surrounded by tropical plants, invite long stays and much conversation.

This is how Elsa Costa designed her restaurant, which she named Naquele Lugar/ In That Place. This haven of peace was set up during the war and15 years later, remains unchanged. Meanwhile, a lot has changed in Luanda. Downtown, houses have given way to highrises. Roads and bridges have been built. Little remains untouched. Well, maybe the traffic is the same. The sunset has a similar hue, and Elsa’s restaurant still has an open door.

Elsa herself, sadly, is no longer with us, but her spirit still lives on in Naquele Lugar, hidden amongst the coconut and mango trees, waiting to be discovered.

ERA UMA VEZ UM RESTAURANTE EM LUANDA, ESCONDIDO NO MEIO DAS ÁRVORES. MUITOS JÁ OUVIRAM FALAR DELE, MAS NEM TODOS SABEM ONDE FICA. PARA LÁ CHEGAR É PRECISO SUBIR A ESTRADA ÍNGREME QUE SAI DO BALEIZÃO E LEVA À CIDADE ALTA; DEPOIS, É VIRAR EM DIRECÇÃO À FORTALEZA.

O caminho a tomar para chegar a este restaurante não é óbvio e, talvez por isso, sejam sobretudo os turistas que escolhem passar por ali. A história do local remonta aos últimos anos da guerra: em 1998, Elsa Costa, jornalista apaixonada por viagens e gastronomia, decidiu fazer daquelas paredes brancas de casa antiga a lembrar Portugal, um espaço para receber amigos e dar-lhes o que comer. Dizem que o tempero era tão bom, que depressa a fama se espalhou pela cidade e o restaurante se encheu de clientes. Na ementa, que não anda ao sabor das modas e se mantém praticamente igual há vários anos, constam apenas os clássicos: meia dúzia de pratos de peixe, outros tantos de carne. Há pataniscas, arroz de pato e bacalhau com natas. Menos óbvios são os dois pratos que deram fama à casa: o primeiro é o Arroz de Garoupa. No tacho, o peixe ganhou o tempero da cebola e do tomate, o arroz envolveu-se com a salsa, e o marisco passou pelo alho. No final, um leve toque de pernod, o licor de sabor a anis que só pode ser usado com cuidados de alquimista e que aqui foi empregue na dose certa. A travessa onde é servido é generosa, a pensar em quem chega, faminto, da rua.

O outro prato é bem mais simples: trata-se de um bife do lombo, com a altura certa e temperado apenas com sal e limão. Fica assim durante umas horas e depois passa por uma 22 DIVO MAIO 2014

massa de pimenta do reino, especialmente feita na casa. Depois, entra na frigideira. Os gourmands talvez considerem este prato demasiado prosaico; outros, de paladar mais simples, vêem no Bife de Pimenta uma bela versão da comida caseira e despretensiosa, tão difícil de encontrar em Luanda.

No que ao menu diz respeito, estamos conversados. A carta dos vinhos também não surpreende, com o destaque a ir para os tintos e brancos sul-africanos. No capítulo das sobremesas podem existir algumas surpresas, sobretudo para os amantes de gelados. É o caso do Gelado de Chá de Caxinde, Canela e Gengibre. Uma delicadeza de fabrico caseiro e muito bem-vinda ao final de uma noite quente. Aliás, é esse o espírito do restaurante fundado por Elsa Costa: fazer com que os que ali vão se sintam bem-vindos, tal como se jantassem no quintal de amigos. As mesas, todas elas dispostas ao ar livre, entre plantas tropicais, convidam a conversas demoradas. Foi assim que Elsa Costa quis o seu restaurante, a que chamou ‘Naquele Lugar’. Um templo de paz, inaugurado ainda durante a guerra, e que, 15 anos depois, se mantém inalterado. Durante esse tempo, muita coisa mudou em Luanda. Na Baixa, as casas deram lugar a prédios. Fizeram-se estradas e pontes. Poucas coisas permanecem iguais: talvez apenas o trânsito seja o mesmo, o sol se ponha com

a mesma côr, e o restaurante da Elsa mantenha as portas abertas.

Elsa já não está connosco, mas o ‘Naquele Lugar’ continua igual, escondido entre mangueiras e coqueiros, à espera de ser encontrado.

Esta é a nova estrela da cadeia Yes Hotels, em Atenas, plantada em cheio no meio dos passeios turísticos da capital grega, e mesmo ao lado da Praça Syntagma, que ultimamente tem estado bastante animada.

O layout ecoa muito do país lá fora, não só do antigo e tradicional, como a mitologia ou a superstição popular, mas tanto também da actual situação política e económica, se quisermos ver para lá das aparências.

Em 2003, dois irmãos brasileiros, Fernando e Humberto Campana, já com carreiras bem estruturadas atrás de si, entraram nas bocas dos modantis do design e da deco, quando a sua cadeira Favela foi produzida pela Edra [Lembro-me bem, nos beberetes para a imprensa, na altura, toda a gente que queria ser Gente tinha que ter encaixados na cabeça quatro ou cinco nomes com ficha, para ter uma conversa oficialmente credível. A Favela era um dos requisitos. E os Campana, claro.]

O espírito que fez nascer há 11 anos a cadeira fez nascer no ano passado a brilhantíssima estreia dos Campana no desenho para hotel. Na capital de um país arrasado, em plena devastação económica e financeira, nasce o New Hotel, antigo Olympic Palace Hotel. A dupla, que numa atitude louvável convidou estudantes locais a acompanharem a execução do projecto, manteve intactas as core features do edifício de 1940: a condição de re-usar o que tem mais-valia é sine qua non para os Campana. Como também o é o respeito pela cultura e tempo que rodeia a obra, como aqui.

A estrutura ‘Favela’ surge logo nas áreas comuns, como o restaurante e a recepção, os mesmos paus e partes de mobília aparentemente ad hoc cobrem paredes, ou disfarçam pilares. Mas o conceito low budget living surge em coisas tão prosaicas como um lavabo à vista no quarto. A diferença é o upgrade do lavabo. E do quarto. Não querendo parecer, mesmo, um estilista estalinista, e cair na redundância do ‘ah-e-tal-os-ricos-a-brincarem-aos-pobres-e-não-sei-quê’, mas por favor acompanhem-me e dissequemos a expressão: favela + chique, pronto, I rest my case.

O New Hotel de Atenas é uma estreia que se aplaude de pé. E se Deus quiser e a vida for boa, de white tie, como na ópera. Pois, nem estalinista nem estúpido.

This is the newest star in the YES Hotel chain. It is set in the heart of the touristic centre of the Greek capital, at the Syntagma Square in Athens which has seen quite a bit of activity recently.

The layout reflects the host country, not only are the ancient traditions reflected with its cultural wealth of mythology and popular superstition, but the current political and economic situation of the country is portrayed as well – if you want to peek behind initial appearances.

In 2003, two Brazilian brothers, Fernando and Humberto Campana, with a solid career already behind them, became the talk of the design and decoration cognoscente, with their Favela armchair by Edra [I remember so well at the time, those of us who peopled the cocktail parties for the press had to memorise the top four or five hot names if we wanted to appear to be in the know. The Favela was one of the names to be dropped – as was the name Campana itself, of course.]

The same spirit that brought us the armchair, over a decade ago, has now brought the Campanas into hotel decoration.

Last year, in the capital of a country stricken by a tremendous economic and financial crisis, the New Hotel was born, in the building of the former Olympic Palace Hotel. The brothers had the brilliant idea to invite local students to contribute to the project whilst keeping the basic core features of the 1940 building intact: the determination to reuse what is most valuable is sine qua non to the Campanas. As is their respect for the culture and the period of time surrounding the project.

The Favela theme can be seen immediately in the common spaces such as the reception and the restaurant areas. The same wooden slats and ad hoc pieces of furniture cover walls or disguise pillars. But the low budget living style shows up in such delightfully prosaic touches as a washbasin in plain sight in the rooms. The difference is that it is an up-market washbasin. And then there is the room itself. I don’t want to appear as if from the fashion police and repeat ad nauseam that ‘oh how silly it is’ to see the rich playing poor, etc., etc.

But please, be patient with me a moment whist we deconstruct this idea of favela + chic. There. I rest my case.

The New Hotel in Athens is a debut that deserves a standing ovation. And God willing and if life is good to us, we will applaud it while wearing white tie, just as if we were attending the opera in Paris. So, I’m not exactly the fashion police. But then I’m not stupid either.

Consegues definir qual foi a primeira forma de expressão artística que encontraste? Escrever foi o ponto de partida para tudo o resto.

Escrever, pôr no papel pensamentos e ideias, às vezes só palavras. Tudo começou aí.

Can you pinpoint what was the first kind of creative expression that you discovered? Writing was the starting point for everything else.

Writing, putting thoughts and ideas down on paper, sometimes just words. That's where it all began.

Entre a música, as artes plásticas e o vídeo, nenhuma teve prioridade? A música, sem a mínima dúvida. Sempre foi aquilo que quis fazer. Fui fazendo enquanto estava no liceu, tive bandas de garagem.

Queria pôr as ideias e pensamentos que escrevia em cima de alguma música. Fiz experiências em cima de músicas dos Cool Hipnoise ou do Frank Sinatra.

Between music, art and video, has there ever been a priority for you?

Music, without a doubt. That's what I always wanted to do. I was always making music whilst I was at school, I had garage bands. I wanted to put the ideas and the thoughts I was writing into some sort of musical format. I experimented with the music of Cool Hipnoise and even Sinatra.

É difícil imaginar-te numa banda de garagem... Mas continuo totalmente disponível para o processo de construção de ideias que se pratica numa banda de garagem. Agora estou muito mais certo do que quero fazer, mas acho que qualquer músico dirá – e não é que eu seja músico – que esse lado de trocar de ideias é essencial.

Porque dizes que não és músico? Respeito os músicos, respeito pessoas que passam oito horas a estudar um instrumento. A minha relação com a música não é essa relação científica. É uma relação de expressão.

Quando me olho no espelho não é um músico que vejo.

It's hard to imagine you in a garage band... But I'm still totally open to the creative process that goes on in a garage band. Nowadays, I know far better, exactly what it is I want to do. But I think that any musician would admit – not that I call myself a musician – that the exchange of ideas is the key.

Why do you say you're not a musician? I greatly admire musicians.

I respect those who spend 8 hours a day practicing an instrument. My relationship with music is not a scientific relationship. It's a relationship of expression. When I look in the mirror, I don't see a musician.

Se calhar por seres muitas outras coisas? Sou filho da minha mãe, irmão do meu irmão, amigo dos meus amigos. Espero ser isso tudo.

Perhaps because you are so many different things? I'm my mother's son, the brother of my brother, the friend of my friends. I hope I'm all of these things.

Nas Artes não? Sim, mas basicamente só me interessa uma coisa: dividir perspectivas. Maximizar as ideias para que possam chegar até às pessoas. Se chega melhor numa canção, é isso que eu faço. Se chega melhor numa fotografia, é isso que eu faço. E por aí adiante. O que não me interessa são as definições, as gavetas. Não tenho de me preocupar com isso.

But not in art? Right, because mostly what interests me is sharing perspectives. To expand ideas so that they can reach people. If a song is the best medium, then that's what I do. If a particular photograph reaches them better, then that's the way I choose to go – and so on.

What doesn't concern or interest me is the restriction of labels and boxes. I have no need to worry about them.

É um tipo de liberdade? É uma liberdade que todos temos, independentemente de nos reconhecermos como mecânicos, médicos ou seja o que for. Tentar é uma coisa intrínseca às nossas qualidades: se queres fazer alguma coisa, há uma grande probabilidade de conseguires.

Is it some sort of freedom? It's a freedom that we all possess – whether we think of ourselves as mechanics, doctors or anything else. We are all inherently capable of seeking it: if you want to do something, you're probably going to be capable of doing it.

Interessa-te esse lado experimental? Interessa-me maximizar aquilo que temos nas mãos. Não sou daquelas pessoas que constroem 40 canções para escolher 12. O experimentar é a consequência. É importante estares disponível para viveres coisas novas, para explorares, mas não é o meu ponto de partida. O meu ponto de partida é viver.

Are you into experimental art? What I'm into is making the most of what I have on hand. I'm not one of those people who write 40 songs in order to choose just 12. Experimenting is a consequence. You have to be ready to experience new and different things, to explore, so that's that my starting point. My starting point is to live.

Aquilo que crias tem a ver com essa vontade de viver e partilhar?

Eu gostava muito que fosse vontade. Se fosse, teria algum mérito. Mas é mesmo uma necessidade. Não consigo ter paz se não o fizer. Não tenho muita escolha.

Is what you create somehow related to your desire to live and to share things? I wish that were the case. If it were, it would be worth it. But it's truly just a need. I have no peace of mind if I don't do it. It’s almost as if I have no choice in the matter.

Sempre foi assim? Não posso dizer que foi sempre assim. Viver, para mim, é exigente. Não tens de ensinar uma criança a mentir, mas tens de a ensinar a dizer a verdade. A vida é um bocado isso. Para dizeres a

verdade tens de te disciplinar, tens de te predispor, tens de te manter fiel. É uma coisa que me dá algum trabalho. Houve uma altura em que ainda não tinha encontrado a forma de ser consequente com essa necessidade. Ficava só na parte da chatice, em vez de explorar os benefícios que essa necessidade provoca.

A tua formação académica é em vídeo. O que te levou a ir por aí? Sempre procurei fazer coisas que tivessem o mínimo de definição possível. Era um curso abrangente, incluía vídeo, filmes, rádio, teatro. Já sabia que o caminho passava pela música, mas não tinha feitio para passar oito horas a estudar contrabaixo. O vídeo foi uma forma de continuar a explorar aquilo que eu sabia que queria fazer: apresentar alguma coisa às pessoas.

Dizes que procuras coisas com o mínimo de definição. A questão de identidade que o teu álbum suscita também tem a ver com isso? Não quero dizer que a identidade não importa. Claro que importa. É relevante. Só não acho que seja crucial. É importante pertencermos a algum lugar, sabermos quem é o nosso pai e a nossa mãe. Isso contextualiza o nosso ponto de partida, mas não define para onde vamos. E estamos sempre a caminho de alguma coisa.

Quando dizes Se Eu Fosse Angolano, tem mais a ver contigo do que com Angola? Tens que ser de um lugar para ir para outro, mesmo em termos físicos. E enquanto te deslocas vais-te tornando também outras coisas. O meu álbum é sobre mim, mas é sobre todas as pessoas que se sentem presas por predefinições, ou limitadas por terem nascido onde nasceram, ou por serem como são. Tem a ver com uma libertação interior.

Não sou activista político. O que me interessa é o indivíduo. É preciso dar energia e motivação às pessoas. O essencial aqui é dizer que, independentemente da porta de onde sais, os teus sonhos são importantes.

Ficaste conhecido primeiro como artista plástico. Isso influencia de alguma forma a tua música? Se as pessoas vierem ter comigo e disserem que sou o filho da Dona Zé, é a mesma coisa. Muitas vezes tem a ver com as nossas definições de sucesso. O meu professor de teatro dizia que toda a vida dele quis ser realizador de cinema. Um dia, foi almoçar com um realizador que invejava e descobriu que ele sempre quis ser encenador de teatro. Somos todos seres plurais. Os títulos só ajudam a vender jornais.

Contigo é sempre imprevisível o que vem a seguir? Agora estou com esta vontade irresistível de ter família, sei lá de onde é que vem.

Gostas de estar no palco? É preciso cuidar das pessoas. Há espaço para preparar melhores concertos, melhores conteúdos. Os concertos em Portugal foram só um princípio. É uma outra forma de constituir família? Sim, de alguma forma é isso. Uma das coisas que sinto que só eu posso fazer como faço – e não quero parecer arrogante – é estar em cima de um palco.

Vais ter concertos em Angola? Não tenho nada marcado. Seria um prazer tremendo ter um concerto em Luanda. Acham-me um intelectualóide, e espero ter a oportunidade de mostrar outra coisa.

takes discipline to tell the truth. You have to put yourself out there. You have to stay true to yourself. It can be difficult at times. There was a time when I hadn't quite yet found a way to incorporate this need. I was stuck with the negative consequences instead of exploring the benefits that this drive provides.

You formal training was in video. What led you in that direction? I've always sought out those things with the fewest restrictions and labels possible. It was a wide open course that included video, film, radio and theatre. I already knew that my way was also going to include music but I hadn't yet acquired the discipline to spend 8 hours a day with my arms around a bass. Video allowed me to keep on exploring what I wanted to do: create something special for people.

You first made a name for yourself as an artist. How has that influenced your music? If somebody comes up to me and says that I am the son of Dona Zé, it's all the same to me. Very o#en it's about how we define success. My theatre instructor used to tell us, that ever since he'd been young he had wanted to be a film director. Then one day he went to lunch with a film director whom he was jealous of and he found out that the film director had always wanted to direct theatre on stage! We all have to be multi-faceted. Labels only serve to sell newspapers.

You say that you like things with the least number of labels. Is the identity of your album somehow related to this as well? I'm not trying to say that identity isn't important. Of course it's important. And it's very relevant. I just don't think it's absolutely crucial. It's important that we belong to a place, that we know who our father and who our mother are. This is the background behind our starting point but it doesn't determine where we go. And we are always travelling towards some different place.

With you, is it always unpredictable what's going to happen next? At this point in my life, I'm dying to start a family. No telling exactly where that is coming from.

Does the title Se Eu Fosse Angolano/If I Were Angolan say more about the country or more about you? You have to be from some place before you can go on to another one, even when we're speaking in purely physical terms. And when you travel, you're always going to turn into something else. My album is about me but it's also about all those people who feel trapped or limited by having been born where they were born, or due to being who they are. It's about freeing yourself up inside. I am no political activist. I'm interested in the individual. I want to energise people, to encourage them. I have to say here, that in-

Is that another way of raising a family? Yeah, I guess it is. One of the things that I think that I'm the only one who can do it – and I don't want to sound too full of myself – is being on stage.

Do you enjoy performing on stage? You have to take care of people.

There is an urge to put together the best possible concerts, with the very best content. My Portuguese concerts were simply the beginning.

Are you going to perform in Angola? I don't have anything scheduled. It would be a tremendous pleasure to give a concert in Luanda. Many over there think of me as some sort of intellectual snob and so I’d hope to show them another side of myself.

A lua estava cheia e a festa ainda estava a aquecer. As festas dos angolanos em Havana arriscam-se a tomar proporções nacionais. Os estudantes mwangolés em Cuba iam às festas dos cubanos, passavam despercebidos, mas a simpatia dos que vão estudar para a ilha da salsa, da rumba, do chá-chá-chá, viraram a coisa, e agora temos semba, kizomba, afro-house e kuduro. Ritmos que cativam os cubanos de forma nova, apaixonante e descontraída.

Quem começou a criar a febre pelas kizombadas, o DJ Lua, natural da Lunda Sul, não teve problemas em assumir: “As nossas festas vão ser as melhores de Cuba!”. Lua começou a pôr música de forma informal, com a ajuda de um amigo a que chama ‘irmão’, o Nitvanio, de seu fato social, tira fotos dos eventos para pôr nas redes sociais.

A dupla Lua e Nitvanio queria sentir-se em casa, mesmo no estrangeiro, mesmo que se trate de uma simples festa para juntar pessoas e conviver. “Agora é mais fácil, porque os cubanos estão a aderir às nossas festas e eles gostam das festas dos angolanos”, diz Lua, apontando com o braço para o espaço da festa entre jangos e com o churrasquinho a ser feito. Com as bebidas, com as comidas e com o som levantado, ao gosto da juventude. Para além dos pratos e das novidades musicais da Banda, Lua e Nitvanio convidam os talentos dos colegas para darem um cariz mesmo angolano aos eventos. O Paz, rapper de serviço, natural da Mutamba, actua com o seu mike e traz as letras que aproximam as pessoas, todas as pessoas, todas as nacionalidades.

Cuba e o seu sistema de ensino universitário atrai centenas de jovens de toda a América Latina, e também de Angola. “Aqui juntamos toda a gente, não há fronteiras, o importante é que às seis da manhã ainda está

The moon was full and the party was just getting warmed up. The Angolan parties in Havana are threatening to become a national phenomenon. Mwangolés students on the island of salsa, of rumba and chá-chá-chá used to go to Cuban parties and no one seemed to notice. But then their natural friendliness and warmth began to win over the local population and now we’re beginning to hear semba, kizomba, afro-house and kuduro, right across the entire island. The Cubans have been wowed by these new, passionate, and unpretentious rhythms.

It was Lua, the DJ, who stirred up this Kizomba fever and this native of Lunda Sul made no bones about boasting: ‘We’re gonna put on the best parties in Cuba!’ Lua first began mixing music, somewhat casually – with the help of his friend Nitvanio, whom he calls brother. Nitvanio, usually dressed to the nines, is a photographer who records the parties in order to post them on social networks.

The Lua/Nitvanio duo wanted to feel at home, despite the fact that they were living abroad and even if that meant nothing more than getting a few people together for a party. ‘Now it’s easier because the Cubans are starting to arrive and they love the Angolan parties’ says Lua, pointing with his arm at the party hall, as the grill is being set up. The drinks, the food and with the sound turned all the way up: just like the young crowd likes it. In addition to the dishes and the latest musical trends of da Banda, Lua and Nitvanio have brought together the talent of all their colleagues to give a genuine Angolan feel to the event. Paz, a rapper from Mutamba, grabs the microphone and begins pouring out the lyrics that bring together people of all nationalities.

Cuba and its university system attracts young students from all over Latin America, and from Angola as well. ‘Here everybody mixes together. There are no frontiers. The important thing is that at 6:00 a.m.

Nitvanio conta mesmo que o DJ Lua foi convidado a ir pôr música a Santiago de Cuba, no extremo Oriente da ilha, “e fiquei pasmado com a quantidade de pessoas que o conheciam e que esperavam pelos sets musicais dele!”. A festa conta também com as comidas caribenhas, muito próximas da cultura africana – aliás, Cuba tem uma africanidade muito grande, com muitas tradições que combinam com este tipo de ambientes.

DJ Lua deu os primeiros passos em Luena, Moxico. Gostava de ver a reacção das pessoas quando punha música. Depois passou por Benguela e Luanda, e dali trouxe todas as influências para Cuba. A maior inflência que tem é o DJ Babadum, que ajudou muitas vezes, no puxa-cabo, no monta-coluna, na preparação das festas. Agora com o seu ‘irmão’ Nitvanio, querem ter Angola perto do coração e “pelo menos ao fim-de-semana sentimo-nos em casa”.

Lua também ajuda a Embaixada Angolana em Cuba, de forma informal, a acompanhar os artistas angolanos de visita à ilha, na preparação das festas mais formais da Embaixada. Há pouco tempo ajudaram no acolhimento dos kuduristas Sebem e Puto Prata, que estiveram na ilha para gravações para dia 11 de Novembro, a celebração da independência de Angola.

DJ Lua tem uma alegria imensa de ver os angolanos mais próximos e de poder trazer cada vez mais cubanos para o seio de uma Angola vivida numa ilha no mar do Caribe, uma Angola a globalizar-se através da Cultura, da diversão. Os estudantes angolanos são muito bem recebidos e as pontes entre as juventudes dos dois países têm tudo a ganhar com estes eventos, sobretudo em noites de lua cheia.

Nitvanio tells us that Lua was invited to mix music in Santiago de Cuba, on the far east side of the island, ‘and I was stunned at the number of people that knew him and that were there, waiting for his sets!’ The food also includes local Caribbean dishes that are not so different from that of Africa – in fact, Cuba has a huge African cultural heritage, which is showcased in an event like this.

Lua started working as a DJ in Luena, Moxico, and he enjoyed the groove of the audience’s reaction when he mixed the music. Later on, he passed through Benguela on his way to Luanda before continuing on to Cuba, bringing all those influences with him. His greatest role model is DJ Babadum, who has o"en helped him set up his parties. Now, he and his “brother” want to keep Angola close to their hearts and ‘to feel right at home, at least at the weekend.’

Lua also helps out, informally, at the Angolan Embassy in Cuba by showing visiting Angolan musicians around the island and in the proceedings for more formal embassy parties. He recently escorted kuduristas, Sebem and Puto Prata whilst they were on the island recording for the 11th of November – Angolan Independence Day. DJ Lua just loves to have Angolans around and he also wants to attract more and more Cubans to experience the soul of Angola, as it is lived on an island in the Caribbean seas. This is the Angola that is currently riding the wave of globalisation that’s driven by the country’s rich culture and its spirited entertainment. The Angolan students here are received with hospitality and the younger people from these two nations have nothing but joy to gain from these events, particularly on nights when the moon is full.

Fom The Shard you catch a glimpse of the world, and of London spread at your feet When a city literally has a mirror to reflect the beauty of its landscape, we know that we are in the right city. London has such a mirror. Designed by Italian architect Renzo Piano and financed by Qatari investors, this slender, elegant pyramid is worthy of being a monument. It rises over Southwark, in the heart of the British capital, a glass cherry adorning the top of the London skyline.

Inspired by the spires of the ancient English churches, by the railway lines that crisscross the labyrinthine terrain and by the masts of the boats that navigate the River Thames.

The building itself is panelled with sophisticated glass panes that form an impressive facade that mirrors the light of the sun and of the sky – the structure reflects each change of the season, each turn of the weather. Three hundred and six metres tall, it houses 87 floors. From this urban and urbane glass pyramid arising from the heart of the city the sight of the horizon is waiting for you at the end of an easily accessed short li! ride.

The first stops are between floors 3 and 28, where you will

find offices – wide open working spaces inspired by modern design and decorated in windows with an unobstructed view. Next, the aromas of the world will entice you as they wa! from the 31st, 32nd, 33rd and 34th floors, respectively. The Aqua Shard offers a synthesis of contemporary London cuisine melded with a revamping of traditional English fare. The decoration is typical of the cosmopolitan style of the city whilst its menu brings together ingredients ‘made in the UK’ with innovative forms of food preparation. The bar serves everything, ranging from English tea to G and T. Continuing your journey upwards you arrive at the Oblix Restaurant, where you can enjoy a doubly pleasurable experience. This sophisticated, urban setting with its menu rich in intense flavours was inspired by New York style grills. In the lounge we find a catalogue of cocktails served in the manner of classic American bars and accompanied by live music.

There are many a police force around the world – including that of China –who have chosen the BMW RT for a wide range of jobs. For years, the comfort afforded a#er many a long hour on top of the bike combined with the reliability of the flat twin engine have attracted a host of fans. Riders used to be just as easily won over by the fact that the R 75/5’s drum brakes were even more efficient than some disk brakes.

You must admit that the Germans are great innovators. And in the past decade, that innovation has produced a BMW range that includes trail bikes, scooters, maxi-enduro, supersports bikes and touring bikes. On the other hand, it is becoming more and more obvious that the distinction between these types of bikes is starting to disappear, as has happened for example with the 1600 GT and the 1200 GS, the precursors to the new RT. At the risk of oversimplifying, we could almost say that that the former touring bike has almost disappeared and that the new RT is the result of the marriage between some of the mechanical features of the GS, with some of the stylistic/design options of the GT, whilst keeping some of the main features of the previous roadbike/tourer.

Em termos de ergonomia, a nova BMW RT está mais baixa do que a anterior. Se considerarmos o triângulo entre o guiador, os apoios dos pés e o assento, a nova RT está 20 mm mais próxima do solo e, em igual medida, foi aumentado o comprimento do banco.

2 The third choice Thirty-six years a"er the first RTs (R 100 RT/1978), this German brand has many a reason to celebrate. They had record sales last year. And in the first quarter of 2014, demand continued to improve, proving that the popularity for blue and white bikes is still on the rise. So, the launch of a new RT is more than mere good fortune, in particular when you’re talking about such a well-equipped machine, in which we only felt the lack of a GPS... and the covers for the side bags and the top-case.

When you sit on the bike, the first impression is of being surrounded, and that of having both your body and legs well protected. It also has the best aerodynamic pro-

tection on the market. Nevertheless, the width of the engine and the position of the cylinders partly hamper the foot movements needed to drag the bike backwards. Given the weight of the bike, however, this is understandable. Nevertheless, the machine’s balance compensates for the poundage. In fact, it is precisely this balance that makes the bike so dynamic.

Riding this new RT is like surfing the crest of a wave.

The smoothness on mountaintop hairpins is similar to the maneuverability in the city. And when talking about the precision with which you can point this 1200 into the corners, let us remember the meeting between the precise lines and the serene expression of da Vinci’s Mona Lisa. The boxer is, of course, louder than the six cylinders of the 1600 and it vibrates more as well, particularly when you accelerate or slow down quickly. But it’s also true that the Germans have done an excellent job of filtering the noise and vibrations in a bike that keeps up the tradition of a drivesha" transmission.

As for the driving, in the Rain or Road modes, we can’t say that the engine – now oil-cooled – provided particularly stellar performance. The suspension is much smoother, however. So, to this extent, we cannot fail to point out the good level of comfort whilst riding on these two wheels. In this MY14, the Dynamic optional brings extra firmness to the suspension as well as some sportiness – and in this area we are truly in the presence of a new RT. The increased power, a more sensitive transmission, and a quicker selector for quicker journeys but, above all, the pleasure of quick driving, without feeling like we’re on a sports bike. Ride comfort, aerodynamic protection – that also works in the rain –

Quando nos sentamos na moto, a sensação de envol-

vência é das mais evidentes, sendo esta acompanhada por uma protecção, tanto do corpo como das pernas. Acresce a protecção aerodinâmica, que podemos considerar uma das melhores que existem no mercado. No entanto, a largura da moto e o posicionamento dos cilindros, dificultam parcialmente as manobras que precisemos de fazer com os pés no chão, em especial quando pretendemos puxar a moto para trás. Todavia, nesta situação é fácil de perceber que o peso da moto está claramente mitigado pelo equilíbrio de massas. Aliás, é este mesmo equilíbrio de massas que concede um bom comportamento dinâmico.

Conduzir esta nova RT é como andar na crista da onda, numa prancha de surf. A curvar, a suavidade com que se consegue serpentear numa serra é semelhante à manobrabilidade em circuitos urbanos. E no tocante à precisão ao inserir esta 1200 nas curvas, lembra-nos a conjugação entre o rigor do traço e a serenidade de expressão da Gioconda de da Vinci. É verdade que o boxer é mais ruidoso do que os seis-cilindros da 1600, e que, comparado com este, é também mais vibrante, em especial quando se acelera ou desacelera de forma mais brusca. Mas também é verdade que os alemães fizeram um excelente trabalho a filtrar o ruído e as vibrações, numa moto que continua a manter a tradição da transmissão por cardan.

O conforto de rolamento, a protecção aerodinâmica – que também funciona à chuva – e os espaços para arrumos, são itens mais do que suficientes para revelar o carácter estradista da nova RT. Os consumos moderados também ajudam, e os 125 cavalos apontam para a nova direcção da marca alemã, que em alternativa às desportivas, apresenta modelos de invejável dinâmica. into a submarine. They can fly the smallest jet in the world (Acrostar) while trying to outrun a missile. They can hide with Roger Moore in a crocodile camouflaged submarine, in Octopussy or pull the triggers on the machine guns on Daniel Craig’s Aston Martin DB5, in Skyfall.

And, as James Bond is a man who knows how to chase with class and who likes to be pursued in luxury, brands such as BMW, Audi, Mercedes-Benz, Alfa Romeo and Bentley, are all found amongst the iconic fourwheel machines. In honour of the work behind the scenes, this exhibition also reveals the creativity behind magical scenes where the cars driven by 007 are secondary characters. In addition to the half a century of James Bond legend incorporated in these vehicles, fans can feast their eye on miniature models, action sequence frames, sketches and filming props.

BAROQUE @ ESTOCOLMO/STOCKHOLM ‘Baroque’ (‘Barockt’) é a mais recente exposição do Kulturhuset Stadsteatern, em Estocolmo. Baroque (Barockt) is the latest exhibition at the Kulturhuset Stadsteatern in Stockholm. Running until the 19th of October, it features the best works of the baroque period, together with contemporary art. CIRQUE ÉLOIZE @ MEO ARENA

O Cirque Éloize traz a Lisboa o espectáculo de circo contemporâneo ‘ID’, para ver de 22 a 25 de Maio, no MEO Arena, em Lisboa. Interagindo com projecções de vídeo, acrobatas, breakdancers e contorcionistas, criam um deslumbrante e energético espectáculo, que combina o melhor das artes circenses com as danças de rua.

Os bilhetes custam entre € 35 e € 45.

Cirque Éloize is bringing the contemporary circus show ID to the MEO Arena, Lisbon, from the 22nd to the 25th of May. Its stunning, fast-paced interactive video projections, acrobats, break-dancers and contortionists create a show that combines the best of traditional circus with street dance. The music festival season opens in Lisbon with Rock in Rio. From the 23rd of May until the 1st of June, in Parque da Bela Vista, Lisbon will once again play host to many of world’s greatest rock and pop bands. The impressive line-up already includes The Rolling Stones, Robbie Williams and Ivete Sangalo. It will be Justin Timberlake’s first performance in Portugal when he comes to close out the festival.
