Depois de a revista Divo ter aberto as portas da sua redacção a todos os angolanos através do sucesso conseguido pela novela Windeck, a revista chega agora às bancas.

A ficção torna-se realidade e os cargos antes representados por actores tão conhecidos como Nádia Silva, Grace Mendes, Edusa Chindecasse, Fredy Costa e Celso Roberto, são agora ocupados por profissionais, que trabalham para transformar a Divo numa revista de referência, dentro e fora de Angola.

Esta é uma revista de moda e lifestyle bilingue que atende a todos aqueles que nutrem um interesse pela cultura Angolana e Africana.A Divo celebra a expressão cultural africana e pretende marcar o seu lugar com esta primeira edição, recheada de uma explosão ecléctica e criativa de conteúdos artísticos, sociais e culturais.

Dennis Fonseca, Solange Hilário e Fredy Costa recebem destaque nesta edição, sendo actores com uma forte presença na novela Windeck, que representam a qualidade da produção televisiva angolana.

Ao ser uma revista com uma forte componente de moda, a Divo também apresenta as tendências para as próximas estações, assim como páginas com fotografias de moda dirigidas a mulheres e a homens.

A arte angolana tem lugar nesta primeira edição, através da representação feita por Paula Nascimento, na Bienal de Arquitectura de Veneza. O espaço musical é preenchido por Sandra Cordeiro, uma revelação luandense que produz sonoridades “made in Africa”.

Nesta edição da Divo há também lugar para conteúdos internacionais, que nos transportam numa viagem até à Ilha Vazimi, em Moçambique, passando pel’Os Gêmeos, os mestres brasileiros da arte urbana, com uma paragem no Festival Berlinda, o evento que promove a lusofonia em Berlim.

A Divo coloca o continente africano em diálogo com o mundo, transmitindo os valores e tradições de uma cultura enérgica e atractiva.

Esta primeira edição promete levar o trazer o mundo a Angola e levar Angola ao mundo.

After opening its doors to Angolans with the success of the Windeck soap, Divo magazine has now finally reached the newstands.

Fiction becomes fact and the roles played by well-known actors such as Nádia Silva, Grace Mendes, Edusa Chindecasse, Fredy Costa and Celso Roberto are now played out by those working to transform Divo into an important magazine both in Angola and abroad.

This is a bilingual fashion and lifestyle magazine for everyone interested in Angolan and African culture. Divo celebrates African creativity and is very much set on creating its own niche with this first issue and its eclectic and creative explosion of artistic, social and cultural content.

Dennis Fonseca, Solange Hilário and Fredy Costa are prominent in this issue, as actors whose presence is very much a part of Windeck and who embody the quality of Angolan television production.

As a magazine with a strong fashion element, Divo has all the tendencies for the forthcoming seasons, with pages of fashion photography directed towards both men and women. Angolan art is also very much present in this first issue through the work of Paula Nascimento at the Venice Architecture Biennale. The music category is filled by Sandra Cordeiro, a revelation from Luanda who produces sounds “made in Africa”. This issue of Divo also has a definite international focus which transports us to the island of Vazimi in Mozambique, over to the work of Os Gêmeos, masters of Brazilian urban art, and stops at the Berlina Festival, an event which promotes lusophony in Berlin.

Divo puts Africa in dialogue with the rest of the world, showcasing the values, innovations and traditions of an energetic and vibrant culture. This first issue promises to bring the world to Angola and take Angola to the rest of the world.

Se lhe falar em Solange Hilário poderá não reconhecer o nome.

Mas se lhe disser que Solange foi Kássia na novela “Windeck” decerto já se recordará.

If someone tells you about Solange Hilário you may not know her name, but if they say that Solange was Kássia in the soap called “Windeck” then you’re sure to remember.

Natural de Matosinhos, foi no programa português “Ídolos” de 2009/2010 que Solange encontrou a rampa de lançamento para o mundo artístico. Na altura tinha apenas 16 anos mas não deixou ninguém indiferente à sua capacidade vocal. Com família angolana, a jovem viu na novela “Windeck” uma oportunidade para se aproximar da terra natal dos seus antepassados.

De facto, foi em “Windeck” que Solange se surpreendeu a si própria, com uma passagem do mundo da música para a representação encarada com muita naturalidade, empenho e dedicação: “Nunca tinha pensado ser capaz de fazer o que fiz neste projecto e muito menos ter esta oportunidade. Encarnar a Kássia foi muito gratificante”, diz Solange. Mas entre a Kássia e Solange a única semelhança, diz a própria, é o facto de serem as duas mulheres que se dão à paixão.

O balanço da participação na novela não poderia ser mais positivo. Solange diz que o sucesso conseguido foi resultado de muito trabalho de equipa e que ainda hoje se sente muito acarinhada pelo público: “Fico muito grata por cada mensagem e gesto de carinho. É um prazer enorme trabalhar para um público tão dedicado e a eles quero dizer um muitíssimo obrigada”.

De tal forma que voltaria a repetir a experiência da representação.

Solange confessa que a adaptação a Angola foi muito natural: “Identifiquei- me com os costumes e forma de estar”. Confessa ter ficado rendida à forma descontraída como os angolanos encaram o dia-adia, e até os problemas, um povo “(…) muito alegre e relaxado, com vontade de evoluir e ser cada vez melhor”.

Hoje, sente saudades da música, da dança e dos angolanos. Diz que não é só a cidade de Las Vegas que não dorme, também Luanda o é.

Enquanto mulher para a qual “o céu é o limite”, Solange tem altas perspectivas para o que aí vem. Contudo, ainda não sabe se o seu futuro passará por Portugal ou pelo regresso a Angola. Tem certeza apenas de uma coisa: que quer continuar a ser feliz fazendo o que lhe dá mais gosto, a Arte.

Assim, confessa que, apesar de querer fazer mais coisas na representação, a música é uma paixão que não vai ficar para trás, afirma Solange que neste momento está a finalizar os seus temas originais, prometendo novidades para breve.

Solange was born in Matosinhos, and it was in the Portuguese Ídolos Programme of 2009/2010 that she found her springboard into the world of artists. She was only 16 at the time, and left no one indifferent to her vocal talents. She has Angolan family, and felt that the soap opera Windeck would be an opportunity to come closer to the birthplace of her forebears.

In fact, it was in “Windeck” that Solange surprised herself by passing very naturally from the music world into acting with great enthusiasm and dedication: “I never thought I’d be able to do what I’ve done in this project and even less that I’d get this opportunity.

Playing Kássia was very gratifying”, said Solange. But the only similarity between Kássia and Solange is the fact that they’re both very passionate women.

Her participation in the soap couldn’t have been more triumphant.

Solange says that her success was the result of great team work and she still feels a lot of affection from the public: “I’m very grateful for every message and gesture of affection. It’s an enormous pleasure to work for such a dedicated audience and I’d like to extend my heart-felt thanks to one and all”.

It’s been such a pleasure that she’d like to repeat her acting experience. Solange confesses she adapted very naturally to Angola: “I identified with the customs and the character of the people”. She says that she completely adapted to the relaxed way Angolans deal with everyday life and even with their problems as a people who are “(…) very joyful and relaxed, and who strive to progress and get better and better”.

Today, she misses music, dancing and the Angolans. She says it isn’t only the city of Las Vegas that never sleeps – Luanda doesn’t either.

As a woman for whom “the sky is the limit”, Solange has great possibilities for the future. But she doesn’t know if her future will be in Portugal or if she’ll return to Angola. She’s only sure about one thing: that she wants to continue being happy working in what she enjoys most - Art. She admits that she wants to do more acting, but music is passion that she hasn’t left behind, “(…) and never will”, says Solange, who is presently finalising her original songs and promises us some new music very soon.

Desde há já algum tempo que os temas étnicos têm vindo a ser explorados por designers em todo mundo e de todas as áreas. O recurso a franjas, cores vibrantes, missangas e madeiras, acessórios tribais ou marcadamente culturais são elementos que raramente deixam as passerelles. O Verão é a estação propícia ao regresso em força destes elementos, reforçando o espírito libertino e apaixonado.

A tendência histórica veio juntar-se à febre dos padrões que invade todos os palcos da moda. O resultado são estampados coloridos e vibrantes, com formas simplificadas e um ar artesanal.

Uma reinvenção da tendência étnica que tem bastantes seguidores, já que o resultado é um look fresco, cool e colorido, mas que ao mesmo tempo não descura o toque clássico e o ar clean. Adeus aos looks étnicos confusos e vistosos… olá ao clássico marcadamente cultural e elegante!

Ethnic themes have been explored by designers from every area of fashion and every part of the world for quite some time now. The use of fringes, vibrant colours, beads and woods, tribal or very cultural accessories very rarely leave the catwalks. They come out in force during the summer season, and breathe life into the libertine, passionate spirit.

This historic trend has joined the fever of patterns which is invading the fashion stage. The result has been colourful and vibrant prints in simplified shapes which look hand-made.

A reinvention of the ethnic trend has many followers because the resulting look is fresh, cool and colourful, but still has a classical touch and a very clean look. Goodbye to confused, showy ethnic looks… and hello to the very cultural, elegant classical look!

Na estação mais quente do ano, quando só apetece mergulhar em águas cristalinas, demos um salto até São Paulo para conhecer as tendências propostas por três grandes marcas brasileiras.

A Blue Man celebrou 40 anos de vida com um desfile surpreendente, marcado pela paleta cromática vibrante e pelos incríveis estampados. Nascida na década de 70, a marca decidiu homenagear alguns dos nomes que marcaram a sua história, estampando nos fatos de banho os rostos de Rose di Primo, Monique Evans, Paulo Zulu, Mariana Weickert, Talytha Pugliesi e Ana Claudia Michels. Mas a verdadeira estrela é a estampa do fundador da marca, David Azulay, que surge no meio de uma confusa cena de praia a dizer adeus, uma imagem que representa bem o espirito descontraído e fresco da Blue Man. Frescura e cor também não faltaram no desfile da Salinas, que se encheu de padrões. Entre o étnico e o gráfico, a marca lançou uma colecção inspirada nos últimos 30 anos de praia no Brasil; o resultado foram modelos ultra-femininos aos quais não faltaram laços e folhos e onde as peças surgiram em versões menos reveladoras do que o habitual, fazendo lembrar a moda de banho europeia. Uma colecção divertida e jovem onde os acessórios ocupam um papel importante na criação dos looks.

Quem também brilhou em São Paulo foi a Água de Coco, com uma colecção surpreendente. Para o Verão de 2013, a designer Liana Thomaz inspirou-se na Turquia e na sua cultura que mistura o Oriente com o Ocidente. O resultado foi uma paleta de cores terra, quentes mas suaves, que se misturaram com padrões étnicos, criados a partir das fotografias de Edu Rezende.

Uma colecção muito completa com fatos de banho e biquínis para todos os gostos, dos mais atrevidos aos mais panejados, sem nunca perder a originalidade em detalhes como entrançados e cortes de laser. A malha dourada foi outro dos pontos fortes desta colecção, ideal para mulheres sofisticadas e arrojadas.

During the hottest season of the year when all you feel like doing is bathing in crystal clear waters, we went to São Paulo to see the trends proposed by three important Brazilian labels.

The Blue Man celebrated 40 years as a beachwear label with a surprising fashion show marked by a vibrant palette of colours and incredible prints. Founded in the 1970s, the label decided to honour some of the people who have marked their history, and printed the faces of Rose di Primo, Monique Evans, Paulo Zulu, Mariana Weickert, Talytha Pugliesi and Ana Claudia Michels on the swimwear. But the true star was the print of the founder of the label, David Azulay, who appears in the middle of a confused beach scene saying goodbye – an image which conveys the Blue Man’s relaxed, fresh spirit really well.

A plethora of patterns also brought freshness and colour to the Salinas fashion show. The label has launched a collection inspired by the last 30 years of Brazilian beaches, with ethnic styles and geometric prints. The result is ultra-feminine models with bows and frills, and pieces which are less revealing than usual, reminiscent of the European type of beachwear. It is a fun, young collection and accessories are important for creating the looks. Água de Coco also stood out in São Paulo with a surprising collection. For the summer of 2013, designer Liana Thomaz found her inspiration in Turkey, and Turkish culture with its blending of East and West. The result is a palette of earth colours which are warm but soft, and mixed with ethnic patterns created from the photographs of Edu Rezende. It’s a very complete collection with swimsuits and bikinis for all tastes - from the most audacious to the more conservative - without ever losing the originality of the details with their plaiting and laser cutting. The golden knitwear was one of the strong points of this collection – ideal for sophisticated, daring ladies.

Agi & Sam Agi Mdmulla e Sam Cotton são dois nomes que estão na boca de todos os fashionistas Londrinos.

Conheceram-se quando estagiavam com Alexander McQueen, mas foi apenas em 2011 que lançaram a sua própria marca.

Com apenas quatro colecções nas ruas, a Agi & Sam já conquistou a atenção do mundo da moda.

Sam cresceu numa quinta perto de Stratford Upon Avon. Mais tarde viria a estudar ilustração, mas foi arrebatado pelo design de moda durante um estágio na Topman. Já Agi, até aos dezasseis anos alimentou o sonho de ser piloto de aviões, mas um BA em Fashion Design na Manchester Metropolitan mudaria a sua vida para sempre.

Ambos trabalharam com nomes tão sonantes como Karl Lagerfeld, McQueen e J.W. Aderson, onde aprenderam e refinaram os seus gostos e técnicas. Hoje têm a sua própria marca com uma personalidade muito forte, onde não existe espaço para a simplicidade. Tudo é vibrante e apaixonado. As suas colecções são marcadas pelas cores fortes, pelos materiais inovadores, como tecidos feitos a partir de garrafas de plástico recicladas, e por padrões únicos, desenhados pelos próprios. Tudo tem um cunho muito pessoal e um grande sentido de humor.

Para o Verão 2013 a dupla propõe uma colecção de tons pastéis com cores que vão dos laranjas aos azuis.

Por sua vez, os estampados, cheios e vibrantes, são, muitos deles, com motivos florais. Tudo isto inspirado em séries dos anos 80, como Miami Vice e Magnum PI, completando de forma perfeita este imaginário com modelos muito diferentes que ostentavam divertidos bigodes falsos!

Agi Mdmulla and Sam Cotton are two of the names all the London fashionistas are talking about.

They met when they were training with Alexander McQueen, but it was only in 2011 that they launched their own brand. Agi & Sam only have four collections on the street, but have already attracted the attention of the fashion world.

Depois de várias viagens ao Quénia e uma enorme coleção de tecidos estampados daquele país, Max Osterweis decidiu fundar uma marca de roupa nova-iorquina com alma Queniana. Os padrões vintage, colecionados ao longo de anos, foram usados para fazer a primeira coleção, na primavera de 2009. Suno nasceu, assim, da vontade de dar um impulso a um país que há muito é a segunda casa de Max. Desta forma, para além de alma e inspiração africanas também a produção é feita maioritariamente no Quénia, preservando as técnicas artesanais que são conjugadas de forma brilhante com as técnicas de corte e formas mais modernas.

Hoje em dia, a marca está presente em lojas como: Opening Ceremony, Ikram, The Webster, Colette e Harvey Nichols. Uma marca com um espirito forte que conta com fãs tão ilustres como Michelle Obama.

Sam grew up on a farm near Stratford-upon-Avo and then studied illustration, but was later to be captivated by fashion design during his training at Topman. Agi dreamt of being a pilot up to the age of sixteen, but a BA in fashion design at the Manchester Metropolitan was to change his life forever.

They both worked with big names like Karl Lagerfield, McQueen and J.W Anderson, where they learned and refined their tastes and techniques. Today they have their own brand with a very strong personality, no room for simplicity and all vibrant and passionate. Their collections use strong colours, innovative materials such as material made from recycled plastic bottles and unique patterns of their own design. Everything has their personal touch and a great sense of humour.

After taking various trips to Kenya and creating an enormous collection of Kenyan printed cloth, Max Osterweis decided to establish a New York fashion label with a Kenyan soul. The vintage patterns he collected through the years were used to make the first collection in the spring of 2009. Suno was born from the desire to give impetus to a country that has long been Max’s second home. So as well as its African soul and inspiration, it’s also mostly produced in Kenya - it preserves the traditional techniques and combines them brilliantly with the most modern cutting methods and shapes. Today, the label can be found in shops such as: Opening Ceremony, Ikram, The Webster, Colette and Harvey Nichols. It’s a label with a strong spirit and with fans as illustrious as Michelle Obama.

Em 2012, o jornal “Financial Times” distinguia Moçambique como um dos melhores destinos turísticos do mundo. Ano após ano, o país tem vindo a ser cada vez mais procurado por turistas atraídos por umas férias de luxo e descanso.

Vamizi é um exemplo disto mesmo. Situada no arquipélago de Quirimbas, a norte de Moçambique, esta ilha é banhada pelas águas quentes e límpidas do oceano Índico. Ao contrário de outros destinos paradisíacos, Vamizi tem a particularidade de não ser um local de turistas em massa.

In 2012, the Financial Times newspaper named Mozambique one of the world’s best tourist destinations. Year after year, the country has been increasingly sought by the kind of tourists who are attracted by luxurious, restful holidays.

Vamizi is an example of just that. Situated in the Quirimbas Archipelago in the north of Mozambique, the island is bathed by the warm, limpid waters of the Indian Ocean. Localizado na Marginal, o Bahia é um espaço em Luanda que se tornou muito mais que um simples restaurante.

A decoração deslumbrante percorre os três pisos do estabelecimento, num estilo angolan chic. No terceiro piso funciona a pizzaria do restaurante, com uma maravilhosa vista sobre a marginal e mobília africana em madeira de estilo retro. O segundo piso funciona como restaurante propriamente dito e é um lugar romântico para um jantar a dois, à luz de vela. No primeiro piso funciona um bar-lounge. Durante os dias úteis, o Bahia é um lugar de preferência para os funcionários das petrolíferas, que têm os seus escritórios nas redondezas.

Para além de restaurante, o Espaço Bahia é também um centro cultural. Fique atento aos anúncios de eventos, tanto nas noites da semana, como nos fins-de-semana. Todas as terças, por exemplo, é noite de microfone aberto, com muita poesia e música ao vivo, e as quartas são noites de salsa. Aqui encontrar um sítio para estacionar não é problema.

A cozinha do restaurante inspira-se na culinária do Brasil, mas o menu contém pratos brasileiros, portugueses, angolanos e contemporâneos; recomendam-se pratos de mariscos e as sugestões do chefe, que variam consoante a época. O Bahia é um dos nossos lugares preferidos em Luanda, recomendado pelo seu ambiente, a sua cozinha e por tudo que tem dado à cidade desde o ano 2000, quando ainda se vivia uma Luanda muito diferente da actual.

The establishment has three floors with a stunning Angolan chic décor. The restaurant’s pizzaria is on the third floor, with a marvellous view over the coast road and African retro-style wooden furniture. The second floor is a proper restaurant and a romantic place for a candlelit dinner for two. The first floor is a bar-lounge. During the week, Bahia is a favourite haunt for people working in the oil companies which have their offices nearby.

As well as a restaurant, Espaço Bahia is also a cultural centre. Look out for the events advertised both for week days and week-ends. Every Tuesday is open mike night for example, with a lot of poetry and live music, and Wednesday night is Salsa night. It’s not difficult to find a place to park there.

The restaurant food is inspired by Brazilian cuisine and the menu offers Brazilian, Portuguese, Angolan and contemporary dishes. We recommend the sea food dishes and the chef ’s suggestions, which vary according to the time of year. Bahia is one of our favourite places in Luanda, and we recommend it for its ambience, cuisine and for everything it’s brought to the city since it was built in 2000, when life in Luanda was very different to the way it is today. www.luanda-nightlife.com

É um dos nossos restaurantes preferidos em Luanda e fica situado no centro da cidade, mais especificamente no bairro Maculusso. Com uma excelente relação preço-qualidade, este é talvez um dos melhores espaços da cidade. A sala principal do restaurante conta com um pátio grande mas simples, com uma churrasqueira de carvão ao ar livre, tal como nos quintais de qualquer casa de família em Luanda. Mas também é possível comer na sala interior do restaurante.

Os nossos amigos dizem-nos que o restaurante tem o melhor peixe grelhado de Luanda. Somos tentados a concordar. Os peixes de enorme tamanho ficam em exposição.

Comemos todos uma deliciosa garoupa grandíssima e bem fresca, acompanhada com batata, legumes e uma salada de pimentos verdes grelhados. Não se esqueça do jindungo.

O ambiente do La Vigia é agradável, descontraído e eclético. Às vezes parece mesmo um daqueles almoços de fim-de-semana tão comuns em Angola. Vimos muitos angolanos e expats (principalmente portugueses) a partilharem as mesmas mesas. Reparámos que este restaurante é um lugar frequentado por alguns rostos conhecidos de Luanda, principalmente da televisão. Quando fomos, o restaurante estava cheio, com écrans gigantes a passarem TPA 2. Este é o ambiente ideal para um jantar de amigos, onde todos podem falar alto, rir, beber umas Cucas e passear pelas mesas uns dos outros. Ficámos com a sensação de que toda a gente parece conhecer-se.

This is one of our favourite restaurants in Luanda, and is situated in the centre of the city, in the Maculusso district to be precise. It’s excellent value for money and perhaps one of the best spaces. The main part of the restaurant has a large, simple patio with an open-air charcoal grill just like the garden of any family home in Luanda. But you can also eat in the restaurant’s inner room.

Our friends say that the restaurant has the best grilled fish in Luanda. We’re tempted to agree. The enormous fish are on display. We all ate a delicious, king-sized, super fresh grouper, served with potatoes, vegetables and a salad of grilled green peppers – not forgetting the jindungo.

La Vigia’s ambience is pleasant, relaxed and eclectic. At times it actually seems like one of those week-end lunches that are so common in Angola. We saw many Angolans and (mainly Portuguese) ex-pats sharing the same tables. We noticed that this restaurant is frequented by some of Luanda’s famous faces, particularly from the television world.

When we went, the restaurant was full, with a gigantic screen showing TPA 2. This is the ideal atmosphere for a dinner with friends, a place where everyone can speak and laugh loudly, have some Cuca beers and walk among each others’ tables. Two Alentejans

Dois Alentejanos

The wines I recommend in this first edition are from the Alentejo, one of the largest wine growing regions in Portugal.

Wine has been produced in this region since Roman times, when wines were fermented in large clay pots, a practice that can still be found there today. Though wine had been produced there since ancient times, it became a demarcated wine region in 1988, largely due to the modernization of the wineries and production methods which improved quality standards and standardised the region’s wine.

Os vinhos que aconselho, neste primeiro número, são provenientes do Alentejo, uma das maiores Regiões Vitivinícolas Portuguesas.

A produção de vinhos nesta região remonta aos Romanos, altura em que se produziam vinhos em grandes talhas de barro, uma prática ainda hoje possível de encontrar. Apesar de a produção ser milenar, somente em 1988 se tornou uma região vitivinícola demarcada. Para isso, muito contribuiu a reforma operada, com vista à modernização das adegas e metodologias de produção, elevando assim os padrões de qualidade e uniformizando o vinho proveniente da região.

Today, the Alentejo has some of the largest and most modern Portuguese wineries, and is responsible for 40 % of the wine produced in Portugal.

The region has vast planes, a dry climate and very high temperatures in the summer, making it imperative to find very flexible ways of watering the vines due to the scarcity of water.

The demarcated region of the Alentejo includes eight sub-regions: Borba, Évora, Amareleja, Moura, Portalegre, Redondo, Reguengos and Vidigueira, and produces white and red wines characterised by the typical varieties of these regions. The varieties used most for white wines are Roupeiro, Antão Vaz and Arinto, which produce very smooth, warm wines, with low acidity and very strong aromas. The varieties used the most for red wines are Trincadeira, Aragonês and Alicante Bouschet, which produce full-bodied wines abundant in tannins, and with a high level of alcohol and strong aromas. The vast modernization in this area has led various wineries to expand the range of varieties they use to improve the wines they offer and raise their profile. The different foreign varieties planted in the region, combined with the traditional varieties, produce more complex wines with a very different profile to the wines produced in the Alentejo 20 years ago.

Two good examples of wines from the Alentejo are Esporão Reserva Branco 2011 and Esporão Private Selection Branco 2010. Both wines are produced at the Herdade do Esporão by David Baverdock, who leads the company’s wine team.

These two wines are closely related because they come from the same producer, but their profile and characteristics are completely different. Let’s begin with Esporão Reserva Branco 2011, a straw coloured wine produced with the Antão Vaz, Arinto, Roupeiro and Semillon varieties, with a strong fruity aroma, and the smooth, subtle notes of toasted barrels. It’s fullbodied, velvety and complex in the mouth, with a good balance between fruitiness and minerality, and with a long and fresh finish.

The bar is raised with the Esporão Private Selection 2010, considered to be an exceptional wine. It has a pale yellow colour, and an aroma of very ripe exotic fruits with notes of the French oak in which it ferments for six months. It’s velvety and complex in the mouth, creating a perfect balance between aroma and taste. It has a really long finish.

Actualmente dispõe de algumas das maiores e mais modernas adegas Portuguesas, responsáveis por 40 % do vinho produzido em Portugal. A região é caracterizada por extensas planícies e pelo clima seco, com temperaturas muito elevadas no Verão, exigindo uma grande flexibilidade no que toca à rega da vinha, dada a escassez de água.

A região demarcada do Alentejo compreende oito sub-regiões: Borba, Évora, Amareleja, Moura, Portalegre, Redondo, Reguengos e Vidigueira e produz brancos e tintos, caracterizados pelas típicas castas destas zonas. No caso dos brancos, as castas mais usadas são Roupeiro, Antão Vaz e Arinto, que originam vinhos bem suaves, quentes, com baixa acidez, e aromas muito pronunciados. No caso das castas tintas, as mais produzidas são Trincadeira, Aragonês, Alicante Bouschet que dão origem a vinhos encorpados, com abundantes taninos, alto teor alcoólico e muito aromáticos. A vasta modernização a que assistimos nesta área fez com que diversas adegas ampliassem o leque de castas produzidas, de forma a melhorar a oferta e o perfil. As diversas castas estrangeiras plantadas na região, em conjugação com as castas tradicionais, originam vinhos mais complexos e com um perfil muito diferente dos vinhos que se produziam há 20 anos no Alentejo.

Dois bons exemplos de vinhos provenientes do Alentejo são o Esporão Reserva Branco 2011 e o Esporão Private Selection Branco 2010. Ambos produzidos na Herdade do Esporão, pela mão de David Baverdock que lidera a equipa de enologia da empresa.

São dois vinhos primos, uma vez que provêm do mesmo produtor. No entanto, apresentam um perfil e características completamente diferentes.

Começando pelo Esporão Reserva Branco 2011, um vinho produzido com as castas Antão Vaz, Arinto, Roupeiro e Semillon, de cor palha, com aroma frutado bastante pronunciado, com notas de barrica tostada bem enquadradas e subtis. Na boca é volumoso, aveludado, complexo, com um bom equilíbrio entre a fruta e a mineralidade, terminando longo e fresco.

Com o Esporão Private Selection 2010, subimos a fasquia e entramos num patamar de vinhos excepcionais. Tem uma cor palha, um aroma a frutas exóticas bem maduras, com notas de carvalho francês, onde faz fermentação durante um período de seis meses. Na boca, é aveludado, complexo, num perfeito equilíbrio entre o que se sente no nariz e se sente na boca. Tem um final longo, muito longo.

No que toca à condução, este 911 consegue imprimir tanta confiança que depressa o estamos a conduzir como um compacto desportivo, com a vantagem de termos a potência e tração (melhor do que nunca) no eixo certo para realinhar o final das curvas de acelerador.

O chassis trabalha os dois eixos de forma muito mais homogénea do que nos seus antecessores. Agora existe uma espécie de trabalho de equipa, e já não temos a frente apenas a tentar equilibrar os desígnios da traseira. A vantagem é que nunca existe uma reacção estranha, inesperada ou menos controlada.

Now, the way it drives… Well, this 911 is so reliable that we soon drive with the abandon of a compact sports car, but with the advantage of the power and traction (better than ever) on the right axle to realign the end of bends with the accelerator. The chassis operates the two axles much more uniformly than its predecessors.

Now they work like a team and you don’t just have the front trying to balance the back anymore, with the advantage that there’s never a strange, unexpected or less controlled reaction.

The new central console is similar to the Panamera, and houses the most important secondary controls (including Sport and Sport Plus modes, and the regulation of suspension and exhaust noise). The version with manual transmission has controls much closer to the steering wheel - as you would expect from a sports car.

All this and delightful leather finishing too.

The new electromechanical power steering is lighter, faster and more direct than its predecessor, but is just as progressive and precise and also the same sensitivity and more than enough information.

The mechanics of the 911 continue with “everything at the back”, but the transmission has been reworked. It uses the world’s first sevenspeed manual transmission and the PDK sequential dual clutch box (also seven speed), and is so good, fast and precise that it’s almost a “crime” not to choose it. It also offers the best consumption and acceleration, but the manual version has the best maximum speed.

No que à mecânica diz respeito, o 911 continua com “tudo atrás” mas a transmissão foi revista. Utiliza a primeira caixa manual de sete velocidades e a caixa PDK sequencial de dupla embraiagem (também de sete velocidades), sendo que esta é tão boa na rapidez e precisão que é quase um “crime” não optar por ela. Também consegue os melhores consumos e aceleração, mas é a manual que consegue a melhor velocidade máxima.

The engine? What an engine!… Porsche has revised the electronic management and fuel feed system of this 911, and it now has new injectors, which explains its lower consumption and emissions.

Note the fact that the 3.6 litre block has a smaller engine capacity (3.4 litres). Even so, the output has gone up from 345hp to 350hp. But don’t worry… The new 3.4 is more elastic, has good rpms and is less noisy. It performs very well at low revs, but at over 5000 rpm, when the sound becomes much more insistent, it shows its true power. The car will rev up to a maximum of 7800 rpm, which is an experience I never tire of repeating. The 3.8 litre version of the S still has the same engine capacity, but raises output to 400hp.

O motor? Neste 911 a Porsche reviu a gestão electrónica e o sistema de alimentação, que passa a contar com novos injectores, o que explica os menores consumos e emissões.

Destaque para o facto de o bloco de 3.6 litros ter menos cilindrada (3,4 litros). Ainda assim a potência sobe de 345 cv para 350 cv. Mas não se preocupe… O novo 3,4 é muito mais elástico, rotativo e possui dotes vocais mais trabalhados. A disponibilidade a baixos regimes é muito boa, mas é acima das 5000 rpm que mora a verdadeira potência. A subida de regime só é interrompida às 7800 rotações, uma experiência que nunca nos cansamos de repetir. Já o 3,8 litros do S sobe a potência para os 400 cv mas mantém a cilindrada.

But the best thing is that you don’t have to drive the 911 as if you’re trying to be the next Sebastian Vettel to feel that you have a special car in your hands. No, a simple trip to the café is convincing enough…

O melhor de tudo é que não é necessário conduzir o 911 como se estivesse a tentar ser o próximo Sebastian Vettel para sentir que tem entre mãos um carro especial.

Need for Speed Most Wanted

The producer of Criterion games has presented the remake of one of the great games of the saga Need for Speed – NFS Most Wanted. This new chapter of the famous saga of car-racing games presents the perfectionist vision of its creators with its top quality graphics, details of each car and the urban environments of the multiple race tracks. Playability hasn’t been neglected either: there is a constant feeling of speed during the game.

Most Wanted isn’t a pure car simulator however, and is recommended more for players who like speed but don’t want perfect the driving imposed by the physics of the real world.

It’s just been a rumour so far, but it’s a rumour that’s been growing and is close to becoming a reality. I’m talking about the iWatch, the most recent and original gadget developed by Apple.

Sources close to the company have told the Bloomberg agency that a hundred professionals from different areas are working on the project, which shows it may be more advanced than you’d think. The specific functions of the iWatch are still unknown, though everything suggests that its functions will be similar to the iPhone, but with added advantages for physical exercise.

A lot of effort has been put into the look and technology of this watch of the future, but no one really knows, and all we can do is wait and cross our fingers that we’ll be surprised this year!

Por enquanto é ainda um rumor, mas um rumor que tem ficado cada vez mais forte e se aproxima a passos largos de se tornar uma realidade. Estou a falar do iWatch o mais recente e original gadget desenvolvido pela Apple. Fontes próximas da empresa revelaram à agência Bloomerg que estão cem profissionais de áreas distintas a trabalhar no projecto, o que revela que este poderá estar mais avançado do que se pensaria. Muitas são as apostas sobre a aparência e tecnologia deste relógio do futuro, mas certezas ninguém tem. Assim só nos resta esperar e fazer figas para que sejamos surpreendidos ainda neste ano!

Nintendo Wii-U

The new Nintendo Wii-U console will be available in Portugal on 30th November. Apart from its improved performance, this new Wii-U’s greatest step up from its predecessor is a touchscreen incorporated into the remote control, which allows users to interact in new ways - and that’s not all – it’s the first Nintendo console with full HD outlet (1080p).

Nintendo has made every effort to offer its customers new forms of interaction with its consoles. The Wii-U is the greatest example of this effort, and its new remote control makes it possible to interact in a different way to the traditional keyboard and mouse or the analogous remote controls of its competitors.

Did you know that you can see the ISS - International Space Station - from our homes by just looking at the sky? The ISS is actually the third brightest object in the sky after the sun and the moon.

NASA has now launched the Spot the Station initiative, which consists of sending people email messages whenever the station is visible from their homes. Uma exposição ambiciosa que simboliza uma era de luta pela igualdade de direitos na África do Sul abre o Haus der Kunst de Munique, depois de ter passado pelo Centro Internacional de Fotografia de Nova Iorque, morada de fotografias, filmes, livros, revistas, jornais e documentos que, juntos, contam mais de 60 anos de histórias visualmente fortes do apartheid sul-africano.

An ambitious exhibition which symbolises an era of struggle for equal rights in South Africa is opening at the Haus der Kunst of Munich, following a period at the International Center of Photography in New York, with photographs, films, books, magazines, newspapers and documents telling more than 60 years of visually impressive stories which have marked South African apartheid.

“Rise and Fall of Apartheid: Photography and the Bureaucracy of Everyday Life” é uma exposição dramática, uma narrativa visual que conta o apartheid visto de dentro, a forma como se alastrou pela sociedade, política e economia, chegando mesmo a entrar dentro das casas de famílias de raça negra. Em mais de quinhentas fotografias, captadas por fotógrafos sul-africanos, numa época em que a fotografia emergia como meio de denúncia e contestação, esta exposição é uma descrição de expressões de fúria, corpos agitados, camaradagem e punhos cerrados, numa linguagem de fácil percepção, que se liga intimamente à mente e ao coração do público.

As fotografias contam uma história pela perspectiva das manifestações pela igualdade de direitos entre raças, numa era em que cada movimento era controlado por um governo sul-africano caucasiano e racista extremo. Mortes e funerais desencadearam uma luta conduzida por ideais igualitários, com imagens do outro lado da rede de contestação.

Uma fotografia de Peter Magubane retrata um casal de raça negra a dançar numa discoteca de Joanesburgo e prova, assim, que, mesmo em condições adversas, florescia uma vida quotidiana urbana e cosmopolita na sociedade sul-africana de raça negra.

Quando as Black Sash, um grupo de mulheres caucasianas antiapartheid que usavam uma faixa negra no ombro, se reuniram nos degraus da Câmara Municipal de Joanesburgo, um fotógrafo estava lá. Quando um jovem de raça negra foi morto a tiro pela polícia numa manifestação estudantil, um fotógrafo estava lá. Quando o primeiro punho foi erguido em nome do movimento anti-Apartheid, um fotógrafo estava lá e imortalizou a imagem como símbolo da resistência negra.

Com Okwui Enwezor como curador e Rory Bester como historiador, “Rise and Fall of Apartheid” honra os fotógrafos sul-africanos através da descrição visual de uma luta entre o bem e o mal, onde o equilíbrio é encontrado nas pessoas que, apesar de tudo, lutaram pelo direito a poderem viver condignamente o seu dia-a-dia.

“Rise and Fall of Apartheid: Photography and the Bureaucracy of Everyday Life” is a dramatic exhibition, a visual narrative which tells the story of apartheid from the inside - the way it spread though the political and economic society and came right into the homes of black families. This exhibition has over five hundred photographs, taken by South African photographers when photography was emerging in South Africa as a way of denouncing and challenging apartheid, and describes expressions of fury, agitated bodies, camaraderie and clenched fists, in a language which is easy to understand and connects intimately with the mind and hearts of the public.

The photographs tell a story seen from the perspective of demonstrations calling for equal rights for all races, at a time when every movement was controlled by a Caucasian South African government which was racist to the extreme. Deaths and funerals sparked off a struggle led by egalitarian ideals, and images show the other side of the network of protest.

A photograph by Peter Magubane shows a black couple dancing in a Johannesburg discotheque and proves that urban and cosmopolitan daily life flourished in black South African society even in the most difficult circumstances. When the Black Sash, a group of anti-apartheid Caucasian women who used a black sash on their shoulder, met on the steps of Johannesburg Council House, a photographer was there. When a young black man was shot and killed by the police at a student demonstration, a photographer was there. When the first fist was raised in the name of the anti-apartheid movement, a photographer was there and immortalized the image as a symbol of black resistance.

Okwui Enwezor is the curator and Rory Bester is the historian of the exhibition called “Rise and Fall of Apartheid”, which honours South African photographers with its visual description of a struggle between good and evil, where the balance is found in the people who, in spite of everything, still fought for the right to live their daily life with dignity.

Street Art Gémeos na genética e na arte O s G é m e o s Twins by blood and art The Twins

Otávio e Gustavo Pandolfo são dois artistas brasileiros que compõem a dupla “Os Gémeos”. Tudo começou ainda durante a infância, quando a imaginação ainda era fértil e ingénua. Entre os lápis de cor e as folhas de papel, os gémeos começaram a desconstruir a realidade à sua volta, criando universos paralelos de cor.

vezes, a dura realidade da sociedade brasileira que, actualmente, se reflecte um pouco por todo o mundo.

O universo artístico, reproduzido por esta dupla em muros e paredes, cria um diálogo com as ruas, com as pessoas que interagem com as pinturas, com as cidades onde deixam a sua marca. E através dos graffiti, “Os Gémeos” expressam o que lhes vai nas mentes, materializando, em arte, sonhos, ideias, críticas sociais e políticas. Isto, em trabalhos que estimulam um olhar mais atento.

Os seus graffitis não se resumem a personagens amarelos com cabeças redondas, olhos rasgados e pijamas aos quadrados. A arte está no detalhe. Se pensa que consegue entrar no universo “Tritrez” d’“Os Gémeos” com apenas uma observação, aproxime-se mais, cole o seu nariz à parede se for preciso, para absorver tudo aquilo que colocou esta dupla no pódio internacional da arte urbana. Se pensa que um personagem está a dedilhar numa simples viola, entorte ligeiramente a cabeça e a viola ganha um rosto. Se pensa que a camisola de um personagem tem apenas um padrão retro sobre um fundo castanho, seja mais atento e repare no padrão da Louis Vuitton que veste uma mulher descalça num meio rural. O rapaz que usa o casaco como turbante, tapando o rosto, segura nas mãos uma fisga feita de uma pessoa com os braços abertos. Se os calções coloridos de um personagem se assemelham a quadrados de um cubo de “Rubik” por resolver, aproximese e repare que os quadrados representam bandeiras de vários países. Isto não é “pichação”, não são rabiscos insignificantes pintados por vândalos.

“Os Gémeos” são poetas de rua que, de lata de tinta nas mãos e a cabeça cheia de sonhos, fazem das paredes telas. Isto é o graffiti.

Nos anos oitenta, a cultura do hip hop chegou ao Brasil, trazendo consigo não só novas sonoridades como também novas formas de expressão artística, nomeadamente, o graffiti. Em 1986, “Os Gémeos” tinham apenas 12 anos e começaram a colorir os muros da cidade de São Paulo com as suas ideias jovens e criativas. Com mãos de principiantes a segurar as primeiras latas de tinta, Otávio e Gustavo começaram a criar a sua própria linguagem através de graffitis improvisados, cujos traços frescos eram fixados com perfume, visto que nesta década ainda não existiam materiais próprios para a prática do graffiti.

Os muros e paredes de São Paulo integraram o processo de desenvolvimento d’“Os Gémeos” como graffiters, servindo como papel para as suas experiências, numa fase de descobrimento do seu estilo pessoal que tem, agora, um lugar no mundo. “Um pequeno barco num mar enorme e cheio de surpresas” é como esta dupla define a sua arte, que serve como “ferramenta, forma de dizer as coisas, de questionar, criticar e transformar”. “Os Gémeos” pintam situações que “retratam o quotidiano e com as quais as pessoas se identificam”, tal como decoram muros e paredes com os seus personagens amarelos - imagem de marca desta dupla - retirados de um universo intitulado “Tritrez”, no qual vivem dentro das suas cabeças e cuja história se recusam a partilhar.

A escolha do amarelo para colorir os seus trabalhos passa pelo fato de ser uma cor forte, que chama à atenção. Hip Hop, arte popular, cultura brasileira, sonhos, a cidade e o mundo “Tritrez” são as inspirações da dupla quando tem as latas de tinta nas mãos.

“Os Gémeos” começaram com a “pichação”, um termo brasileiro que define os rabiscos e a escrita de “tags” nas paredes, mas evoluíram naturalmente para um estilo de graffiti caraterístico e de intervenção social, que obrigou as comunidades artísticas internacionais a reconhecer o seu trabalho como arte urbana, ao invés de vandalismo. Os trabalhos d’“Os Gémeos” sofreram a primeira experiência entre 4 paredes no Museu de Imagem e Som, em São Paulo, em 1995. Este foi um ensaio para o reconhecimento mundial que viria a surgir, resultando na primeira exposição da dupla a solo, em 2003, na galeria Luggage Store, em São Francisco. Em 2008 participaram na maior exposição europeia de arte urbana, no Museu Tate Modern, em Londres, juntamente com Blu, Faile, Nunca, JR e Sixeart – outros graffiters reconhecidos internacionalmente. O museu foi transformado numa galeria de arte urbana ao ar livre, servindo a sua fachada exterior como tela dos graffitis destes artistas. “Os Gémeos” cumpriram, assim, a sua filosofia de que “a arte urbana deve estar na rua”, não sendo graffiti os trabalhos que expõe dentro de galerias. Contudo, as paredes das várias cidades do mundo nunca deixaram de ser as melhores montras do trabalho desta dupla de artistas. Os seus personagens amarelos já passearam por Nova Iorque, Lisboa e Berlim.

Their graffiti isn’t just yellow figures with round heads, almond eyes and checked pyjamas. The art is in the detail. If you think you can get into the “Tritrez” world of ’“Os Gémeos”with just one look, get closer, press your nose against the wall if necessary, to absorb everything this duo has put on the international podium of urban art. If you think a figure is strumming a simple guitar, crook your neck a little and the guitar gains a face. If you think the sweater of a figure just has a retro pattern against a brown background, pay closer attention and you’ll see a barefoot woman in the country in the Louis Vuitton pattern. The boy who uses his jacket as a turban, covering his face, is holding a slingshot made from a person with open arms. If the coloured trousers of a figure look like the squares of a “Rubik” cube to solve, get closer and notice that the squares represent the flags of various countries. This isn’t “pichação” - they aren’t insignificant scribbles painted by vandals. “Os Gémeos”are street poets who make walls into canvases with a pot of paint in their hands and a head full of dreams. This is graffiti.

Hip hop arrived in Brazil in the 1980s, bringing not only new sounds but also new forms of artistic expression, particularly graffiti. In 1986, “Os Gémeos” were just 12 years old and began to colour the walls of the city of São Paulo with their young, creative ideas. Their beginner’s hands held their first cans of paint, and Otávio and Gustavo began to create their language through improvised graffiti whose fresh lines were fixed with perfume, given that no proper materials existed for graffiti in that decade.

The walls of São Paulo embraced the development of “Os Gémeos” as graffiti artists and served as paper for their experiments in a phase when they were discovering their own personal style which now has a place in the world. “A small boat in a vast ocean full of surprises” is the way the duo define their art, which serves as a “tool, a way of saying things, of questioning, criticising and transforming”. “Os Gémeos” paint situations that “describe daily life and with which people identify”, just as they also decorate walls with their yellow figures – the trademark of this duo – taken from a universe called “Tritrez”, which they experience in their heads and whose story they refuse to tell. They choose yellow for the colour of their work because it’s a strong colour that attracts attention. Hip Hop, popular art, Brazilian culture, dreams, the city and the “Tritrez” world are the inspiration of the duo when they have paint pots in their hands.

“Os Gémeos” began with “pichação”, a Brazilian term which defines the scribbles and writing of “tags” on walls, but they naturally evolved to their own style of graffiti and social intervention, which forced the international artistic communities to recognise their work as urban art rather than vandalism. The work of “Os Gémeos” had its first experience within 4 walls at the Museu de Imagem e Som in São Paulo in 1995. This was a rehearsal for the world recognition that was to come as a result of their first individual exhibition together in 2003, at the Luggage Store gallery in San Francisco. In 2008, they took part in the largest exhibition of urban art in Europe at the Tate Modern Museum in London, together with Blu, Faile, Nunca, JR and Sixeart – other graffiti artists of international renown. The museum was transformed into open-air urban art gallery, its outer façade serving as the canvas for their graffiti.“Os Gémeos” thus followed their philosophy that “urban art should be in the street” and that the work displayed inside galleries is not graffiti. The walls of various cities around the world continue to be the best display windows for this artistic duo. Their yellow figures have already been to New York, Lisbon and Berlin.

The contribution of “Os Gémeos” to this growing artistic universe in which graffiti has made its home also includes the publication called “Fiz”, a magazine written by the Brazilian duo and dedicated exclusively to urban art. The artistic expression of “Os Gémeos” is strongly metaphoric and their figures often criticise the harsh reality of Brazilian society, which is currently reflected a little all over the world. The artistic world reproduced on walls by this duo creates a dialogue with the streets, with the people who interact with the paintings and with the cities where they leave their mark. A dinâmica de criação de novas estrelas é absolutamente diferente na era das redes sociais e da internet. E Azealia Banks é um exemplo sintomático disso mesmo: sem digressões, sem um disco oficial nas mãos, ela é, ainda assim, um dos nomes mais badalados do momento, muito graças à rapidez com que hoje se erguem as novas estrelas.

Claro que o impato não seria o mesmo se não houvesse talento para promover. E Azealia Banks tem talento de sobra para erguer a sua carreira e a de mais alguns nomes, se tal for necessário. Com apenas vinte e dois anos, esta nativa do Harlem, bairro histórico de Nova Iorque, nunca tentou fazer de conta que tinha tido uma vida difícil: «Cresci muito mi-

Curiosamente, o impato inicial de Banks foi maior na Europa, onde a cantora e rapper parece ter sido acolhida pela comunidade indie. A partir daí, foi sempre a crescer.

No ano passado, Azealia Banks lançou a mixtape Fantasea, onde dominava o tema das sereias e uma referência oblíqua à subcultura «seapunk». Mas o mais importante era a música que Banks entregava aos seus fãs, uma visão moderna do hip hop, aproveitando alguns dos mais recentes desenvolvimentos dos universos do cloud rap, do moderno R&B e da eletrónica em geral, para deixar uma marca de originalidade muito marcada pelo seu estilo singular de rimas, sempre afiadas e tocadas pela inteligência. O que não tardou a garantir resultados.

Colaborações ainda não editadas com Kanye West e Lady Gaga são, no entanto, confirmações seguras de que esta é uma nova artista destinada ao sucesso. Entretanto, começa-se a criar toda a antecipação possível para Broke With Expensive Taste, o seu álbum de estreia que deverá ser lançado durante o ano de 2013. O primeiro sinal foi dado na passagem de ano com o lançamento de «BBD», mais um single da rapper. «Yung Rapunxel» será o degrau seguinte no caminho para o álbum, uma espécie de alter-ego que Azealia descreve como «aquela miúda que chateia toda a gente, mas sem ser por mal. But most important was the music that Banks gave to her fans, with a modern vision of hip hop using some of the most recent developments from the worlds of cloud rap, modern R&B and electronic music in general, leaving a mark of originality marked by her unique style of edgy and intelligent rhymes, which quickly guaranteed results.

Yet unpublished work with Kanye West and Lady Gaga is certain confirmation that this is a new artist destined for success. Meanwhile, the greatest anticipation possible is being created for Broke With Expensive Taste, her first album, which should be launched in 2013. The first sign was given at the end of last year, with the launching of “BBD”, another single by the rapper. “Yung Rapunxel” will be the next step on the way to the album, a kind of alter ego described by Azealia as, “that girl who pisses people off but doesn’t really mean to. She’s actually a sweetheart”. And the world is shaking in anticipation.

As a fan of Beyoncé, who she calls “the queen of everything. She’s the most remarkable performer and musician…. I think she’s better than everyone else making music right now”, and the late Aaliyah, an open bi-sexual, spokeswoman for a generation which recognises strong personalities and freedom of expression, Azealia Banks is destined for great things. “Luandense” é um álbum que traz estilos musicais nacionais e fusões internacionais, que eu procuro sempre buscar para ter sonoridades diferentes. Temos sonoridades de Massemba, Afro-Semba, Funk, Reggae Love, Pop, Balada e Smooth Jazz. É um disco que fala de amor, de esperança, de liberdade.

Considera que veio inovar o panorama musical angolano?

Sim. Há 5 anos, quando saiu o primeiro álbum, não havia ainda cantoras ou outros músicos com estes estilos. Ainda havia um certo receio por parte de muitos artistas. E, quando lancei o disco, e comecei a ganhar prémios e consegui levar o meu nome a França ou à Africa do Sul, senti que foram surgindo outros artistas. Hoje, já não sou a única e inclusive já temos categorias nos nossos festivais de prémios angolanos de Afro Jazz e World Music. Sinto que dei um contributo para que fossem mudando os hábitos dos angolanos e para que estivessem abertos a novos estilos e novos artistas, que têm surgido e tido sucesso.

“Luandense” é o título do álbum e de uma das músicas deste disco.

O disco chama-se “Luandense”, que é uma música que o Matias Damásio compôs para mim, e que fala sobre Luanda. Achei muito interessante o álbum ter este título, porque é aquilo que eu sou: nasci em Luanda, sou luandense.

Gosta de ouvir Kuduro?

Gosto de Kuduro. Gosto de ouvir e danço Kuduro.

Além do Matias Damásio, que outros compositores participam neste disco?

Eu também sou compositora. Neste álbum tenho 5 letras minhas. Depois, fui buscar compositores angolanos como o Kizua Gourgel, o Filipe Zau, o Filipe Mukenga, o Jack Kanga e o Totó.

Aliás, começou a sua carreira artística como bailarina.

Sim, comecei como bailarina. Só depois, aos 12 anos, é que comecei a cantar, no coro da igreja.

Então, um dia destes, podemos ter um dueto da Sandra Cordeiro com um Kudurista?

Nunca devemos dizer nunca. Não posso saber o dia de amanhã. Não está nos meus planos, mas quem sabe?

Nem sempre é fácil definir o seu estilo musical. Sente que existe essa dificuldade?

Sim, sinto isso. Muitos dizem que sou uma cantora de Jazz, outros de Afro Jazz. Eu faço fusões. Acho que o estilo é mais World Music, que é um estilo musical alternativo, um conjunto de várias sonoridades que eu procuro misturar.

Quais são os seus objectivos profissionais para este ano?

Vender muitos discos por todo o país, fazer uma digressão com muitos shows, e quero muito gravar um DVD de um espectáculo ao vivo.

No entanto, sempre com referencias muito fortes da música angolana?

Sim, sempre. Procuro sempre ir buscar as sonoridades daquilo que

cultural identity, what I have, what I am – the sounds of my homeland.

I try to keep them and preserve them because for me an artist’s cultural identity is everything. It’s difficult for a person to define themselves and create quality without identity.

What can Sandra Cordeiro’s fans expect from “Luandense”?

“Luandense” is an album which brings the national musical styles and international fusions that I always look for to create different sounds.

We have the sounds of Massemba, Afro-Semba, Funk, Reggae Love, Pop, Balada and Smooth Jazz. It’s a CD that talks about love, hope and freedom.

Do you think you’re bringing something new to the Angolan musical panorama?

Yes I do. 5 years ago, when the first album came out, there weren’t any female singers or other musicians with this style. Many artists were still quite afraid. When I launched the CD, began to win awards and made my name in France or South Africa, I felt that other artists were beginning to appear. Today, I’m not the only one and now we even have categories for Afro Jazz and World Music at our Angolan award festivals.

I feel I’ve contributed to changing the habits of the Angolans and making them more open to new styles and new artists who have appeared and have been successful.

“Luandense” is the title of the album and one of the songs on this CD. The CD is called “Luandense”, the name of a song composed for me

by Matias Damásio which talks about Luanda. I though it was really interesting for the album to have this title because that’s what I am: I was born in Luanda, I’m Luandense.

Do you like listening to Kuduro?

I like Kuduro. I like listening and dancing to Kuduro.

Apart from Matias Damásio, what other composers have taken part in this CD? I’m a composer too. 5 of the songs on this album have my lyrics. Then I brought in Angolan composers like Kizua Gourgel, Filipe Zau, Filipe Mukenga, Jack Kanga and Totó.

You began your career as a dancer.

Yes, I did begin as a dancer. I only began to sing in the church choir when I was 12.

It’s not always easy to define your musical style. Do you have this difficulty too?

Yes, I do. A lot of people say I’m a Jazz singer and others say I’m an Afro Jazz singer. I do fusions. I think the style is more World Music, which is an alternative musical style - a series of varied sounds that I try to blend together.

So one of these days we might have a duet of Sandra Cordeiro and a Kudurista?

Never say never. I don’t know what’ll happen tomorrow. It’s not in my plans but who knows?

What are you Professional objectives for this year?

To sell lots of CDs all over the country, do a tour with lots of shows, and I really want to record a DVD of a live show.

But you still have strong influences from Angolan music don’t you?

Yes, always. I always try to find sounds from the things that define my

O rei da pop, Michael Jackson, faleceu em 2009, três anos depois de Justin Timberlake ter oferecido ao mundo FutureSex/LoveSounds, o álbum de «My Love» ou «Sexy Back», êxitos tremendos que afirmaram o ex-‘N Sync como um sério candidato ao trono da pop.

Agora, volvidos quatro anos sobre o desaparecimento do homem de Thriller, Justin Timberlake está de volta. E claro que não é mero acidente fazê-lo com Jay-Z no single «Suit & Tie»: isto é Justin a dizer que para os mais novos há outro Justin e que ele cresceu, é um homem e está pronto para reinar.

E Justin parece estar a dar todos os passos para se concentrar no trono da pop: acaba de anunciar uma digressão conjunta com outro monarca, Jay-Z, que se chamará Legends of the Summer e que irá levar um mega-show por 12 estádios norte-americanos. Tratando-se de Jigga e de Justin é de esperar um espetáculo maior do que a vida, carregado de efeitos e de coreografias maiores do que a vida – ou não se tratasse da afirmação do herdeiro de Jackson.

E depois, claro, há The 20/20 Experience. E nem parece que estamos apenas a falar no terceiro álbum da carreira a solo de Justin Timberlake: é que o menino prodígio acumulou tantos êxitos com os dois primeiros discos («Like I Love You», «Cry Me a River», «Rock Your Body», «Señorita» e «I’m Lovin’ It» são êxitos retirados de Justified enquanto «SexyBack», «My Love» ou «What Goes Around… Comes Around» são três números 1 retirados de FutureSex/LoveSounds, álbum que ainda rendeu mais três singles) que parece incrível estarmos a falar de uma discografia ainda tão curta. E não esquecer que Justin já provou igualmente a sua polivalência, solidificando a sua carreira no cinema entre 2006 e o presente (conseguindo aplausos, por exemplo, como Sean Parker no filme The Social Network sobre o criador do Facebook) e mostrando-se um convidado de peso em temas de gente como 50 Cent, Ciara ou Timbaland.

Justin está, portanto, pronto para o regresso ao enorme circo da pop. E como em equipa vencedora não se mexe, Justin Timberlake voltou a recrutar os talentos de produção de Timbaland que afirmou ter ido para estúdio «sem regras e sem objectivos na cabeça». O que poderá querer dizer que houve neste novo trabalho um esforço deliberado para surpreender, para não usar fórmulas antigas, para avançar. Passagens pelo Super Bowl e pela cerimónia de entrega dos Grammys mostram que Justin não está a facilitar e que o regresso é pensado para ser o grande acontecimento pop de 2013. Michael Jackson já pode descansar em paz, o seu trono tem um herdeiro à altura, alguém que entende a pop como espaço de fantasia, mas também como um terreno propício a novas ideias musicais, a novos e arriscados passos de dança. Justin - cantor, produtor, compositor, actor, mega-estrela, empresário – parece ter todas as credenciais necessárias.

Michael Jackson, the king of pop, died in 2009, three years after Justin Timberlake offered the world FutureSex/LoveSounds, the album of “My Love” or “Sexy Back”, both tremendous successes which affirmed the former member of ‘N Sync as a serious candidate for the pop throne. Now, four years after the death of the man from Thriller, Justin Timberlake is back, and it’s clearly not just a coincidence that he’s doing it with Jay-Z and the single “Suit & Tie”: this is Justin saying that there’s another Justin for the youngsters now and he’s all grown up, he’s a man and he’s ready for his reign.

Justin seems to be taking every step towards the pop throne: he’s just announced a tour with another monarch, Jay-Z, which will be called Legends of the Summer and will take a mega-show to 12 US stadiums. It’s Jigga and Justin together so we can expect a show larger than life, full of special effects and larger than life choreographies – or it wouldn’t be Jackson’s heir taking his position.

Then of course there’s The 20/20 Experience. It doesn’t even seem as if we’re talking about the third album of Justin Timberlake’s solo career: for the whiz kid achieved as much success with his first two discs (“Like I Love You”, “Cry Me a River”, “Rock Your Body”, “Señorita” and “I’m Lovin’ It” are successes taken from Justified , while “SexyBack”, “My Love” ou “What Goes Around… Comes Around” are three successful songs taken from FutureSex/LoveSounds, the album which also produced another three singles) which seems incredible if we’re talking about such a small number of discs. Let’s not forget that Justin has also proved how multi-faceted he is – he’s been consolidating his career in the cinema since 2006 (he’s been applauded for his role as Sean Parker in the film work about the creator of Facebook, The Social Network, for example) and has been a great guest on the songs of people like 50 Cent, Ciara or Timbaland.

Justin is ready to come back to the great pop circus and, as you don’t change a winning team, Justin Timberlake has recruited the production talents of Timbaland again and says he’s been to the studio with “no rules or objectives in his head”. This may mean that this new work has made a deliberate effort to surprise, not to use the old formulas and to go forward. His appearance at the Super Bowl and the Grammys award ceremony show that Justin isn’t making things easy, and his return is planned to be the great pop event of 2013. Michael Jackson can already rest in peace, his throne has a well deserving heir - someone who understands that pop is a space for fantasy, but also a great terrain for new musical ideas and new and risky dance moves. Justin – singer, producer, composer, actor, super-star and businessman – seems to have all the credentials he needs.

Em 2012, Angola participou, pela primeira vez, num dos mais importantes eventos dedicados à Arquitectura a nível mundial, a Bienal de Veneza.

O Pavilhão de Angola marcou presença entre os 55 países representados, na companhia de outros três países estreantes, Kosovo, Kuwait e Peru, assim como os países lusófonos Portugal e Brasil.

A edição de 2012 da Bienal de Arquitectura decorreu entre 29 de Agosto e 25 de Novembro, e teve a curadoria geral de David Chipperfield. O arquitecto britânico desafiou os participantes a desenvolver o tema “Common Ground”. O resultado obtido teve interpretações diversas, desde projectos realizados “em terreno comum” a vários agentes da prática profissional à arquitectura enquanto serviço público, mais ou menos participado pelas comunidades.

Nesta 13ª edição da Bienal, o Leão de Ouro para a melhor representação nacional foi atribuído à exposição do Pavilhão do Japão, comissariada por Toyo Ito que apresentou o projecto "Architecture. Possible Here?

Home-for-all", com um completo estudo para casas destinadas às vítimas desalojadas do tsunami de 2011. Na exposição comissariada por David Chipperfield, o Leão de Ouro distinguiu a intervenção de Urban-Think Tank com Justin McGuirk, que apresentaram um trabalho sobre a ocupação da Torre de David em Caracas, fotografada por Iwan Baan. Quanto à distinção de carreira dedicada à Arquitectura, coube ao português Álvaro Siza Vieira receber o Leão de Ouro.

In 2012, Angola premiered at one of the most important Architectural events at world level – the Venice Bienniale. The Angolan Pavilion competed among with the 55 countries represented, together with another three countries also there for the first time - Kosovo, Kuwait and Peru - and the Portuguese-speaking countries of Portugal and Brazil.

The 2012 edition of the Architecture Biennale was held between 29th August and 25th November and was curated by David Chipperfield. The British architect invited participants to work with the theme of “Common Ground”. This resulted in various interpretations, ranging between projects carried out “in common ground”, various instruments for professional practice, and even architecture presented as a public service and the participation of the community.

"Beyond Entropy Angola" foi o projecto oficial apresentado no pavilhão angolano, com curadoria de Stefano Rabolli Pansera e Paula Nascimento. Há cerca de cinco anos, estes dois arquitectos, que foram colegas na Architectural Association School of Architecture de Londres, formaram Beyond Entropy Ltd. Esta é uma organização sem fins lucrativos, dedicada à pesquisa e focada nos conceitos de energia e de espaço, para lá do que chamam “a retórica da sustentabilidade”, a fim de conceber e produzir novos espaços físicos. Na ilha de San Giorgio Maggiore, na porta lateral à igreja desenhada pelo célebre arquitecto italiano Andrea Palladio, as cores da bandeira de Angola convidaram a entrar na Sala Carnelutti. Surpreendidos, os visitantes passearam entre espaços delimitados por um denso canavial, entre sons de fundo de rua, ruídos de motores que se ouviram e conversas que se cruzaram.

A exposição consistia na reconstrução de um protótipo à escala 1:1 de um novo modelo urbano desenvolvido para áreas de alta densidade populacional nos subúrbios de Luanda, cidade com sete milhões de habitantes. Tal como outras cidades africanas, a capital angolana tem crescido exponencialmente, gerando uma "metrópole alta densidade."

O estudo que deu origem ao projecto foi realizado em torno do bairro Cazenga, uma das maiores e mais problemáticas áreas urbanas, com uma densidade de 53.800 habitantes/km². Um desenvolvimento urbano de características informais, de baixa altura, onde as delimitações dos espaços se esbatem, afastando-se dos preceitos do Urbanismo Moderno e do conceito de zoning: casa e escritório, público e privado - tudo se confunde.

“Beyond Entropy Angola" was the official project exhibited in the Angolan Pavilion, curated by Stefano Rabolli Pansera and Paula Nascimento. These two architects were colleagues at the Architectural Association School of Architecture of London, and created the company Beyond Entropy Ltd. five years ago. This is a non-profit organisation dedicated to research and focused on the concepts of energy and space, going beyond what is called “the rhetoric of sustainability” to actually design and produce new physical spaces. It was their interest in the current urban transformation in sub-Saharan Africa, and the fact that Paula is Angolan, that led them to begin this project in Luanda. They looked for sponsors and received institutional support from the Angolan Ministry of Culture to present their project in Venice.

On the island of San Giorgio Maggiore, the colours of the Angolan flag on the side door of the church designed by the famous Italian architect, Andrea Palladio, invited us into the Sala Carnelutti. Visitors were surprised as they walked though spaces separated by a dense cane field, with the sounds of the street, the noise

"Beyond Entropy Angola" é um projecto low-tech, fruto da pesquisa e colaboração entre artistas, arquitectos e investigadores. Contou também com a participação de estudantes de arquitectura da Universidade Metodista de Angola, que trabalharam directamente com a comunidade. O projecto implicou ainda a Administração Municipal do Cazenga, que contextualizou as necessidades do bairro e deu apoio no terreno.

The over four thousand visitors to the Angolan Pavilion in Venice experienced what could represent a sustainable model for the regeneration of public spaces all over sub-Saharan Africa. The simple, innovative solution proposes DIY intervention, consisting of planting Arundo Donax cane in the interstitial spaces between suburban buildings. This is a common cane which grows rapidly and, as well as creating attractive green areas, can be a sustainable and energetic form of infrastructure, not only because it produces oxygen but also because its dense roots filter dirty water and its stems store great quantities of CO2, producing biomass which is used for producing energy.

The exhibition consisted of the reconstruction of a 1:1 scale prototype of a new urban model designed for high-density suburban areas of Luanda, a city with six million inhabitants. Like other African cities, the Angolan capital has grown exponentially without proper regulation, producing a “metropolis with high density without towers."

The project was based on a study conducted in the district of Cazenga, one of the largest and most problematic urban areas, with a population density of 53,800 inhabitants per km². Cazenga is an informal kind of urban development, with low buildings and with very vague boundaries between spaces, far from the precepts of modern urban planning and the concept of zoning: home and office, public and private – everything is mixed together.

A solução, simples e inovadora, propunha uma intervenção DIY (Do It Yourself), que consistia na plantação de canas Arundo Donax nos espaços intersticiais entre as construções suburbanas. Esta é uma cana comum, de rápido crescimento, que além de criar apetecíveis espaços verdes, pode funcionar como infraestrutura sustentável e energética, não só pela produção de oxigénio, mas também pela densa raiz que filtra as águas cinzentas e os caules que armazenam grandes quantidades de CO2, propício à criação de biomassa, usada para produzir energia.

O Museu Berardo em Lisboa, mostra, até ao dia 30 de Março, os trabalhos de Binelde Hyrcan, Edson Chagas, Kiluanji Kia Henda, Nástio Mosquito, Paulo Kapela e Yonamine, reunidos na exposição “No Fly Zone - Unlimited Mileage”, comissariada por Fernando Alvim, Simon Njami e Suzana Sousa.

Focada na jovem cena artística angolana, esta mostra torna-se numa metáfora do espaço que Angola ocupa hoje no mundo: uma nova sociedade que procura um novo posicionamento geopolitico e cultural num mundo global que passa necessariamente por um revisionamento da sua própria história.

Não é por acaso que os processos de re-escrita da sua história recente e passsada estejam tão presentes na maior parte do trabalho destes artistas. Nástio Mosquito, artista multifacetado, apresenta My African Mind (2009)uma projecção vídeo sobre as representações em torno do negro e da África junto da sociedade dita ocidental, parodiando assim as aspirações e as ansiedades relativas ao outro, tanto presente nos discursos oficiais dos colonizadores como nas fantasias de Holywood. This exhibition is focused on the young Angolan art scene, and becomes a metaphor for the space occupied by Angola in the world today – as a new society whose search for a new geo-political and cultural place in a global world necessarily involves a revision of its own history.

It’s no coincidence that the process of re-writing its recent and past history is so visible in most of the work of these artists. The multi-faceted artist, Nástio Mosquito, presents My African Mind (2009), a video on the representations of black people and Africa in what is called western society, which parodies its aspirations and anxieties in relation to the other in both the official speeches of the colonizers and in Hollywood fantasies. The work is created from a collection of images taken from various sources, be they engravings from the XVIth century, newspaper photographs or photogrammes from films, all of which are superimposed over an inquisitorial discourse and a sound track which lends the video a tone of adventure.

In Kiluanji Kia Henda, the question of re-reading history focuses directly on Angola and necessarily overlaps with Portuguese history. His work, Redefining the Power (2011-2012) consists of two series of images about monuments. One series presents photographic records of the country, and consists of sculptures of Portuguese heroes from the colonial city of Luanda now brought down and lying next to obsolete pieces of war artillery.

On the opposite wall is a photographic series which proposes the reconstruction of monuments on the now empty pedestals from the colonial era.

The artist has called in some friends working in other cultural areas, who have perched up there and become new heroes. At the same time, Kiluanji Kia Henda presents a sarcastic video called O.R.G.A.S.M. –- Organisation of African States for Mellowness, made in 2011, which inverts the meaning of the pro-aid humanitarian discourse of the western world.

The analysis of Angola’s recent history gains a more personal dimension in the work of Paulo Kapela, the oldest artist, who is an important influence for this new generation. This artist works with collage and with from poor materials he has collected, and the history of the country overlaps with his personal history. They are two labyrinths which invoke memory and the meaning of the present, and are full of personal codes in names, places, dates and biographical data, creating a kind of emotional map. Curiously this work has something in common with the mural by Yonamine, made from reproductions of newspaper cuttings in which the official memory of the country is juxtaposed with the artist’s personal memories, and emotional references are made to people and places no longer in his personal life or in the collective life of Luanda.

A different proposal from Edson Chagas creates a game of masks in which identities are questioned. The artist takes the public through the uncertain exercise of reconstructing subjects from behind African ritual masks or, more extremely, plastic shopping bags.

Finally, Binelde Hyrcan creates a metaphor for issues of power in a more universal dimension. The two installations built for the Museu Berardo create scenes of the power apparatus in which death is a parallel. The work refuses to send simplistic messages however, the small stuffed chickens are a distraction, and the meaning of the work is vague has aspects which contribute to a more poetic meaning of this artist’s work.

Já em Kiluanji Kia Henda, a questão da releitura histórica foca directamente Angola e cruza-se necessariamente com a história portugesa. O seu trabalho, Redefining the Power (2011-2012) é constituido por duas séries de imagens, em torno da questão dos monumentos. Uma das séries apresenta um registo fotográfico de carácter documental do lugar a que estão confinadas as esculturas dos heróis portugueses, da colonial cidade de Luanda, agora tombadas ao lado de elementos de artilharia de guerra obsoletos. Na parede oposta apresenta uma série fotográfica com a proposta de reconstrução de monumentos a partir dos pedestais da era colonial deixados vazios. Para isso, o artista convoca alguns amigos, que actuam em outras vertentes culturais e aí, empoleirados, são empossados como novos heróis. Paralelamente, Kiluanji Kia Henda apresenta o vídeo sarcástico, O.R.G.A.S.M. – Organisation of African States for Mellowness, de 2011, uma inversão de sentidos dos discursos humanitários de ajuda do mundo ocidental.

A análise sobre a história angolana recente ganha depois uma dimensão mais pessoal na obra de Paulo Kapela, o artista mais velho e que tem servido de referência a esta jovem geração. No caso deste artista, que trabalha a partir de colagens e da acumulação de materiais pobres, a história do país cruza-se com uma história pessoal. São dois labirintos que apelam à memória e ao sentido do presente, cheio de códigos pessoais, constituídos por nomes de lugares, de datas e dados biográficos que criam uma espécie de mapa emocional. Curiosamente, este trabalho encontra algum paralelo com o mural de Yonamine, construído a partir da reprodução de recortes de jornais, onde a memória oficial do país aparece justaposta a memórias pessoais do artista, com referências afectivas a pessoas e lugares que desapareceram da vida pessoal ou da vida colectiva de Luanda.

Numa proposta diferente, Edson Chagas entra no jogo das máscaras, onde as identidades são questionadas. O artista submete o público ao exercício incerto da reconstrução de sujeitos a partir de sinais de rosto apoiado em máscara rituais africanas ou, de forma mais extrema, em sacos plásticos de espaços comerciais.

Por fim, com uma dimensão mais universal, Binelde Hyrcan estabece uma metáfora em torno das questões do poder. Nas duas instalações para o Museu Berardo cria encenações do aparato do poder onde o elemento da morte aparece paralelamente. Contudo, o trabalho recusa mensagens lineares, as pequenas galinhas empalhadas tornam-se numa distracção, o sentido da obra é difuso, elementos que contribuem para um sentido mais poético da obra deste artista.

“A Minha Banda e Eu” de Inês Gonçalves e Kiluanje Liberdade é um retrato da identidade cultural angolana, expressa através da música e da dança. O filme fez parte da programação do festival DocLisboa'12.

“A Minha Banda e Eu” (My Band and I) by Inês Gonçalves and Kiluanje Liberdade is a portrait the Angolan cultural identity expressed through music and dance. The film was part of the programme of the DocLisboa'12 Festival.

Desde o primeiro plano que somos convidados a acompanhar pés dançantes sobre a terra quente. Porque os seus passos parecem falar tanto como a cara e as palavras de um povo que vê na música e na dança a expressão da sua identidade. “O ser humano é movido por ritmos, a andar, a conduzir...”, conta um cantor cujo cartaz está afixado numa parede. O Semba e o Kizomba, por serem constituídos por ritmos quentes, podem entrar em qualquer lugar, defende.

Desde os Estados Unidos à China, o seu “swing” pode conquistar o mundo. As raízes da música estão ali – até o mais erudito jazz bebeu em África as suas origens –, e dos mais novos aos mais velhos, todos parecem ter nascido a dançar.

We’re immediately invited to follow dancing feet on hot earth, because the steps of the dancers seem to say as much about a nation of people who see music and dance as an expression of their identity as their faces and words. “Human beings are moved by rhythms, when they walk, when they drive...”, says a singer whose poster is on the wall. Semba and Kizomba have such hot rhythms that they can go anywhere, he argues. Their swing can conquer the world - from the United States to China. The roots of music are there – even the most erudite jazz has its origins in Africa - and from the little ones to the elders, everyone seems born to dance.

There’s a legacy to be rediscovered and reinvented that is also enlivened by fusions with the West, and we are shown the spirit of change with words, song and dance. The transmission of culture is a passion and a mission. The people in the documentary (filmed between Luanda and Lisbon) say that Semba came from dust, partying, parents and grandparents. The sculptural scenes and hot photography of the documentary invite us to feel the music in the bodies gliding across the common scenario of a patio, in the street, where music grows beyond time.

Há uma herança para redescobrir e reinventar, animada também pelas fusões do Ocidente. Através de depoimentos falados, cantados e dançados, ficamos a conhecer um espírito de mudança.

A transmissão da cultura é uma paixão e uma missão, entenda-se.

As personagens do documentário, filmado entre Luanda e Lisboa, contam que o Semba veio do pó, da farra, dos pais e dos avós. Sentir a música, nos corpos que deslizam no cenário rotineiro de um pátio, na rua, onde a música cresce para além do tempo, é a proposta, através de planos esculturais, com uma fotografia, também ela quente.

Semba e Kizomba são muito semelhantes, mas têm diferenças que são aqui assinaladas, sem esquecer a criatividade que é a revolução da juventude. “É fácil de aprender”, diz uma das personagens, mostrando os passos. A rapariga segue o rapaz, o rapaz dança como se desenhasse o corpo da mulher que tem nos braços. Cada um desempenha o seu papel. Até nas prisões e na igreja há espaço para o Kizomba, porque a música “anda na alma” e “corre nas veias”.

Antigamente, eram os mais velhos que dançavam Semba, mas agora uma nova geração dá-lhe um toque especial. Desde vestidos de lantejoulas, calças de ganga, ao vestido esvoaçante de uma menina pequena a dançar entre brincadeiras, passando pelo uniforme militar das Forças Armadas, todos praticam esta dança e transmitem essa naturalidade. Alguns dão aulas e aproveitam para ganhar dinheiro extra para pagar despesas. “Com o coração faz-se bem” e assim, ensina-se não o esquema, mas o sentimento que habita na música. A câmara segue os personagens, o à-vontade dos corpos e a emoção que os une. A realização opta por quadros cheios de vida e de pormenores que enchem o olho do espectador sem artifícios ou argumentos estéticos desnecessários.

Cinema Semba e Kizomba Uma herança e uma reinvenção

Kizomba, um estilo urbano, pode ensinar-se? - é a questão colocada por um angolano convidado a dar aulas em Portugal. Um dançarino português conta como se apaixonou pela cultura e apreendeu a informação, o batimento cardíaco que se confunde com o ritmo da música, e o quão importante é para o povo angolano abrir horizontes. A dança faz bem ao corpo e à alma, é a explicação que podemos ouvir. Em cima de uma mota, dois jovens falam sobre uma nova batalha, seguir em frente com alegria e música, com uma alma limpa. Este é um documentário sobre o reerguer de um povo e a aprendizagem do que já se sabe, de uma outra forma.

Semba and Kizomba are very similar but have differences which are shown here while not forgetting the creativity of young people and their innovation. “It’s easy to learn”, says one of the characters, showing the steps. The girl follows the boy, and the boy dances as though he was drawing the body of the woman he has in his arms.

Each person has their role to play. There’s even a place for Kizomba in the prisons and the church because the music “walks in the soul” and “runs through the veins”. In times gone by, it was the elders who danced Semba, but now a new generation is lending it a special touch. Girls in sequined dresses, jeans, a little girl in her floaty dress who dances as she plays, men in army uniforms - everyone does this dance and transmits this naturalness. Some give lessons and earn a little extra pocket money. “If you dance it with the heart you’ll dance it well”, and so they teach the feeling in the music rather than the formal steps. The camera follows the figures, the bodies at ease with one another and the emotion which unites them. The directors have chosen images full of life and detail which delight the spectator with no unnecessary aesthetic artifice or arguments.

Kizomba is an urban style – but can it be taught? This is the question posed by an Angolan invited to teach in Portugal. A Portuguese dancer tells how he fell in love with the culture and learned new information, the heartbeat which merges with the rhythm of the music and how important it is for widening the horizons of the Angolan people. Dancing is good for the body and soul is the explanation we may hear. Sitting on a motorbike, youngsters talk about a new battle - to go forward with joy and music, and with a pure soul.

This is a documentary about the reconstruction of a people and about learning what we already know in a different way.

Lusofonia A Lusofonia em Berlim Berlinda 1

A capital alemã recebeu, entre Outubro e Novembro do ano passado, a cultura lusófona em todas as suas formas. Música, literatura, cinema, exposições e performances de países lusófonos inundaram Berlim, no Festival Berlinda.

A iniciativa partiu de Inês Thomas Almeida, editora do magazine cultural online homónimo do festival. A criação do magazine Berlinda partiu da necessidade de criar uma plataforma cultural “que fosse transversal a todas as pessoas, que falasse da interacção cultural entre Berlim e o mundo da língua portuguesa”. O objectivo? “Reforçar e dar visibilidade à ligação já existente entre os países de língua portuguesa e a Alemanha”.

A criação do magazine foi uma resposta à necessidade cultural, demonstrada pelo público alemão, de estar em contacto com as diferentes culturas de origem lusófona. “Há tantos países e tantas culturas diferentes e as pessoas podem-se entender através duma mesma língua, podem ler e compreender, ouvir música e emocionar-se, ver filmes e gostar. Há milhares de cidadãos de língua portuguesa a viver em Berlim e é preciso ter noção do peso, da beleza e da riqueza das manifestações culturais dos países de língua portuguesa.” Segundo Inês Almeida, estes factos construíram a rampa de lançamento para a criação do Festival Berlinda - um evento que assenta na importância de colocar várias comunidades a dialogar entre si, onde “vários países com culturas diferentes mostram um pouco do que fazem, quase que “a abrir o apetite”, chamando a atenção para a união através de uma mesma língua.”

“Literaturas lusófonas no contexto global: unidade na diversidade?” foi o tema do debate no qual participou Marta Lança, fundadora do Portal BUALA de Cultura Contemporânea Africana.

O Festival Berlinda “superou as melhores espectativas”, confessa Inês Thomas Almeida. Alemães, portugueses, angolanos, moçambicanos e brasileiros foram as comunidades que mais aderiram ao evento, cujas sessões culturais estiveram sempre cheias com um público fiel, interessado, comunicativo e cuja reacção à estreia do Festival Berlinda foi entusiástica e interactiva. Inês Almeida admite ter ficado “surpresa” em relação à quantidade e qualidade do público visitante.

O Festival Berlinda é um evento que dá relevo aos países de língua portuguesa, divulgando a cultura lusófona junto da comunidade alemã e promovendo o diálogo cultural entre lusófonos e alemães. O sucesso desta primeira edição convidou à repetição do festival. O magazine Berlinda mantém-se online, com a missão de informar todos os interessados num universo cultural onde a língua é o português.

Angola was very well represented at the festival. In the literary space, one of the “highpoints” was the launching of a new novel by Ondjaki, presented in two excellent sessions where some passages were read in German and Portuguese - and there were no linguistic barriers. The Angolan writer, also the author of “Os Transparentes”, was welcomed by a motivated and interested public. The Angolan author José Eduardo Agualusa and the Portuguese writer Pedro Sena-Lino were also there. Aline Frazão, a recent revelation of Angolan music, took the musical stage to present her album “Clave Bantu”, which combines African sounds and drumming with Brazilian and Cuban influences. Though it was the artist’s first presentation in Germany, the public went to her first concert en masse and were delighted and very happy with her performance. CDs of “Clave Bantu” were on sale at the event and sold out. Aline Frazão was a true unknown in the German music world and Inês Almeida, Berlinda’s mentor, worked very hard to publicise the artist in the press and on the radio, introducing the singer’s voice to the ears of the German public, “showing” them the value of the Angolan artist and preparing them for the moment when she took the stage in Berlin. In the cinema category, were “Virgem Margarida”, a film by the Mozambican Licínio de Azevedo being shown in Europe for the first time and “Oxalá Cresçam Pitangas”

The initiative was the idea of Inês Thomas Almeida, the editor of the online cultural magazine with the same name as the festival. The creation of the Berlinda magazine came from the need to create a cultural platform “that included everyone who was talking about the cultural interaction between Berlin and the Portuguese-speaking world”. The objective? “To strengthen and improve the visibility of the connection between Portuguese-speaking countries and Germany”. The creation of the magazine was a response to the cultural need to have contact with the different Lusophone cultures, shown by the German public. “There are so many countries and so many different cultures and people can understand one another with the same language – they can read and understand, listen to and be moved by music, and watch and enjoy films. There are thousands of Portuguese-speaking citizens living in Berlin and you just have to understand the great influence, beauty and richness of the cultural manifestations of the Portuguese-speaking countries.” According to Inês Almeida, this is what led to the launching of the Berlinda Festival – an event which focuses on the importance of creating a dialogue between several communities in which “various countries with different cultures show a little of what they do, as if to “wet your appetite”, and call atten-

The Berlinda Festival “surpassed all of our expectations” admits Inês Thomas Almeida. The Berlinda Festival is an event which brings the Portuguese-speaking countries into the spotlight, disseminates Lusophone culture to the German community and promotes a cultural dialogue between Lusophones and Germans. The success of this first edition means it will be held again.

The Berlinda magazine continues on-line with its mission of providing information to all interested parties in a Portuguese-speaking cultural universe.

Angola esteve muito bem representada no festival. No espaço literário, um dos “pontos altos” foi o lançamento do novo romance de Ondjaki, apresentado em duas excelentes sessões onde foram lidas algumas passagens em alemão e português, não havendo barreiras linguísticas. O escritor angolano, também autor de “Os Transparentes”, foi recebido por um público motivado e interessado. Também marcaram presença, no campo da literatura, o autor angolano José Eduardo Agualusa e o escritor português Pedro Sena-Lino. Ao palco musical subiu Aline Frazão, uma revelação da música angolana, para apresentar o seu álbum “Clave Bantu”, que cruza sons e batuques africanos com influências brasileiras e cubanas. Apesar de ser a primeira apresentação da artista na Alemanha, o público aderiu em massa ao seu concerto de estreia, ficando deliciado e muito feliz com a sua actuação. Os exemplares de “Clave Bantu” disponibilizados para venda no evento, esgotaram. Aline Frazão era uma autêntica desconhecida no panorama musical alemão, tendo Inês Almeida, mentora do Berlinda, levado a cabo um trabalho exaustivo de divulgação, na imprensa e na rádio, que introduziu a voz da cantora aos ouvidos alemães, “educando” o público relativamente ao valor da artista angolana e preparando-o para quando esta pisasse o palco em Berlim.

Em exibição, na categoria de cinema, estiveram “Virgem Margarida”, filme em estreia europeia do moçambicano Licínio de Azevedo e “Oxalá Cresçam Pitangas” de Ondjaki e Kiluanje Liberdade, onde é feito o retrato de uma Luanda real e humana.

Quando, em 1959, Fernando Pamplona, julgador de Alegorias, rabiscou um 8 (oito), a maior nota no quesito, para o Salgueiro, e um 7 (sete) para a Portela, criou um capítulo definitivo para o carnaval carioca. A atenção ainda estava dividida com os ranchos, sociedades, blocos, mas as escolas de samba já começavam a assumir a liderança da festa. Logo depois, Nelson de Andrade (presidente do Salgueiro), tratou de convidá-lo para ser o carnavalesco (artista que cria os figurinos e enredos) da escola.

Pamplona, professor da Escola de Belas-Artes da Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, cenógrafo do Theatro Municipal da cidade, e um dos maiores entusiastas dos saberes que emanam do povo, esteve reticente mas acabou por ceder. E resolveu exaltar a história abafada pelos livros didáticos, enchendo de africanidade um território então dominado apenas pelos feitos de heróis brancos. Vieram “Quilombo dos Palmares” (1960), “Xica da Silva” (1963), “Chico Rey” (1964) e a construção de uma nova visão de Brasil, o Brasil negro. As agremiações, então, chamaram para elas mesmas a responsabilidade de reflectirem acerca dos pormenores e diferentes origens da nação brasileira.

In 1959, when a carnival judge from Alegorias called Fernando Pamplona scribbled an 8 (eight) awarding the best points for Salgueiro, and a 7 (seven) for Portela, he began a definitive chapter in the life of the Rio carnival. Attention was still divided with the folk dancing, associations and blocks, but the samba schools were beginning to take over the festivities. Just after this, Nelson de Andrade (the chairman of Salgueiro) invited him to be the carnavalesco (the artist who creates the costumes and themes) of the school. Pamplona was a teacher at the Escola de Belas-Artes of the Universidade Federal of Rio de Janeiro, stage designer at the city’s Municipal Theatre and one of the greatest enthusiasts of popular knowledge, and was hesitant at first but agreed in the end. He decided to celebrate the story stifled by the school books, filling an area previously dominated only by the heroic feats of white people with African-ness. Then came “Quilombo dos Palmares” (1960), “Xica da Silva” (1963), “Chico Rey” (1964) and the construction of a new vision of Brazil – black Brazil. The associations called for responsible reflection on the different aspects and origins of the Brazilian nation.

transformar. Mas forçou o crescimento dando asas aos saberes populares, sem manchar a festa com elementos estranhos. Foi acusado de subverter a dita “pureza” do samba, algo que não é verdade. Pode dizer-se que foi (é) o autêntico pai da árvore genealógica que desembocou na estrutura contemporânea e inovadora do carnaval. Sim, foi apenas um homem que fecundou, gerou e embalou o processo, uma inversão própria do festejo em que as pessoas se fantasiam e saem da realidade. Não tardou para que os filhos aparecessem.

of carnival as a spectacle even though the associations never stopped evolving and transforming, but forced carnival to grow with popular wisdom, without spoiling the festivities with strangeness. He was accused of subverting the “purity” of samba, something which isn’t true. It can be said that he was and is the true father of the family tree which has led to the contemporary and innovative structure of carnival today. Yes, he was just a man who fertilised, nurtured and cradled the process, inverting the carnival where people just wore fancy dress and left reality behind. It wasn’t long before his offspring appeared.

Da primeira fornada, surgiu o hoje considerado maior carnavalesco da história: Joãosinho Trinta. Foi no Maranhão, estado do Nordeste do Brasil, que aconteceu a história do menino baixinho que tinha o sonho de ser bailarino no Rio de Janeiro. Joãozinho (ainda com Z, antes que caísse nos braços da numerologia) corria pelas ruas fascinado com as histórias do lugar de origem. A sua sede de conhecimento era inversamente proporcional à estatura. Frequentava a Biblioteca Pública da sua cidade e era fiel espectador das companhias teatrais que passavam por lá. Uma delas, “Artistas do povo”, trazia no comando o casal de actores Vanda Lacerda e Mario Brasini.

Encantados com o menino que citava os livros clássicos com a intimidade de quem parecia ter tomado um cafézinho com os maiores autores da humanidade, os dois remeteram uma carta para a irmã e o cunhado de Vanda, que viviam no Rio. Contaram-lhe sobre o rapaz e profetizaram: “não sabemos se conseguirá ser bailarino no Theatro Municipal do Rio de Janeiro, pois o físico não ajuda. Mas certamente haverá de brilhar como artista”. A irmã de Vanda, bailarina do Corpo do Theatro, era Zeni. O cunhado? Bem, o cunhado era exatamente o já citado Fernando Pamplona.

The first batch brought in a person who is now considered to be the greatest carnavalesco ever: Joãosinho Trinta. It was in Maranhão, in the state of the north-eastern Brazilian state, that the story began of the short boy who dreamed of becoming a dancer in Rio de Janeiro.

Joãozinho (still with Z, before he fell into the arms of numerology) ran in the streets fascinated with the stories of his birthplace. His thirst for knowledge was as great as he was small. He went to the public library in his city and faithfully went to see the theatre companies which passed through there. One of them was called “Artistas do Povo”(Artists of the People) and was directed by the actors Vanda Lacerda and Mario Brasini. Enchanted with the boy who quoted classical literature with such familiarity that it was if he had had coffee with the greatest authors of humanity, the couple sent a letter to Vanda’s sister and the brother-in-law who lived in Rio. They told them about the boy and predicted that: “we don’t know if he’ll get to be a dancer at the Theatro Municipal of Rio de Janeiro, as he isn’t helped by his physique. But he’s sure to shine as an artist”. Vanda’s sister, a dancer with the theatre ballet company was Zeni. And the brother-in-law?

Não, Joãosinho (João Jorge Trinta) não se tornou bailarino profissional. Mas logo se mudou para o Rio e conseguiu trabalhar na equipa de cenografia e figurino do Municipal. Pamplona – que nunca se esquecera da mensagem de Vanda e Brasini –, já havia regressado de uma temporada na Europa e, finalmente, conheceu o rapaz nos bastidores do Theatro. Tratou de convidá-lo para ajudar no barracão do Salgueiro, estávamos em 1965. Foi amor à primeira vista. Depois de ser auxiliar em históricos carnavais como “Bahia de Todos os Deuses” (1969) e “Festa Para um Rei Negro” (1971), Joãosinho Trinta assumiria sozinho o carnaval do Salgueiro. O samba criou um novo mito, e ele venceu.

No, Joãosinho (João Jorge Trinta) didn’t become a professional dancer, but he soon moved to Rio and worked on the team of municipal stage and costume designers. Pamplona – who never forgot the message of Vanda and Brasini –, had already returned from a tour of Europe and finally met the boy backstage in the theatre. He invited him to help in the Salgueiro barracão (workshop). This was in 1965. It was love at first sight. After helping in historical carnivals like “Bahia de Todos os Deuses” (1969) and “Festa Para um Rei Negro” (1971), Joãosinho Trinta took over the Salgueiro carnival on his own. Samba created a new myth and he succeeded.

After being champion twice (in 1974 and 1975), João moved to BeijaFlor, where he was victorious five times (in 1976, 77, 78, 80 and 83).

He also left us two historical second places – “O Mundo é uma Bola” (1986) and “Ratos e Urubus, Larguem a Minha Fantasia” (1989) –, the latter is considered to be the greatest parade in the history of carnival by many carnival lovers and specialists, and showed the difficulties and wretched lives of the Brazilians. The artist had been censured by the church, and for the presentation took a reproduction of Christ the Redeemer covered with a black plastic bag. In the picture you can read, “Even though forbidden, look at us!”. He lost the title, but won the public, the critics and pages upon pages of the newspapers. João took the work begun by Fernando Pamplona, raised it to the level of social criticism and brought new changes to the concept of carnival.

Logo após ser bicampeão (1974 e 1975), João rumou para a BeijaFlor. Foi vitorioso cinco vezes (1976, 77, 78, 80 e 83). Deixou, ainda, dois vice-campeonatos históricos – “O Mundo é uma Bola” (1986) e “Ratos e Urubus, Larguem a Minha Fantasia” (1989) –, este último considerado o maior desfile da história por muitos apaixonados e especialistas de carnaval, tendo retratado as dificuldades e vida dos miseráveis brasileiros. Censurado pela igreja, o artista levou para a apresentação uma reprodução do Cristo Redentor coberta por um saco de plástico negro. Na imagem, lia-se “Mesmo proibido, olhai por nós!”. Perdeu o título, mas ganhou público, crítica e páginas e mais páginas de jornal. João, pegou no trabalho começado por Fernando Pamplona e elevou-o a um patamar de crítica social, sendo o novo modificador dos conceitos da festa.

sobre o ímpeto de criador e transformador do homem, que trouxe a mais comentada representação alegórica da década passada: o carro do DNA. Os componentes da alegoria humanizada representavam, eles próprios, o código genético humano. Nunca ninguém fizera isso.

Ficou em segundo lugar. Mudou de escola, mas sempre com a sua assinatura: carros vivos (apenas as pessoas como elemento alegórico), enredos de fácil identificação. Virou o artista Pop da festa e o mais novo grande inovador! Voltou à Unidos da Tijuca em 2010 e foi campeão com o enredo “É segredo!”. O sucesso desta vez foi uma épica comissão de frente, que trocava de roupas em plena apresentação com truques de magia. Ganhou também em 2012, com um enredo que homenageava o compositor brasileiro Luiz Gonzaga.

He came second. He changed schools but always with his own style: living cars (with only people as the allegorical element) and easily identified themes. He became the pop artist of the festivities and the youngest great innovator! He went back to the Unidos da Tijuca in 2010 and was champion with the theme of “É segredo!”(It’s a Secret!).

The success this time was a large comissão de frente (front committee) who used magic tricks to change their clothes in the middle of their presentation. He also won in 2012, with a theme paying homage to the Brazilian composer, Luiz Gonzaga.

Hoje, à excepção de Paulo Barros, a folia carioca tem sentido falta de novos bons artistas e estilos. As novas gerações copiam muito o passado, enredos patrocinados, arranjados e enrolados que têm atrapalhado a folia, e poucos são os artistas que têm estilos próprios e vontade de inovar. Estarão os artistas a perder terreno para os diretores de marketing de empresas que procuram promoção no carnaval?

Today, except for Paulo Barros, the Rio carnival is lacking in good, new artists and styles. The new generations tend to copy the past, with sponsored, minutely planned and complex themes which have frustrated the revelry, and few artists have their own style and the desire to innovate. Are artists losing ground to the marketing directors of companies who want to promote themselves at carnival?

Sandro Carvalho é o motociclista angolano que tem dignificado o país ao volante da sua Honda 1000 cc, representando a Semba

Aprendeu a andar de mota aos 8 anos e começou a fazê-lo regularmente com 14 anos.

Sandro Carvalho is an Angolan motorcyclist who has dignified the country behind the wheel of his Honda 1000 cc, representing Semba by Anassis Racing.

He learned to ride a motorbike at the age of 8 and began to ride regularly at the age of 14.

O piloto não tinha ninguém na família ligado à velocidade, mas a força de vontade e persistência levaram-no a seguir aquela que viria a ser uma carreira de sucesso. Hoje confessa que já tinha interesse pelo desporto motorizado e, ao assistir a corridas em Luanda, ficou com a certeza de que era o que queria fazer.

Estávamos na década de 80, altura em que construir uma carreira de motociclista em Angola não era propriamente fácil, daí que Sandro revele: “no início tentaram-me convencer a praticar outros desportos”.

Seria no ano de 2001 que Sandro começaria a competir no Troféu Honda 600, classe onde participou entre 2001 e 2003. Entre 2004 e parte de 2009 competiu em Angola na classe 600. Na segunda metade de 2009 surgiu a oportunidade de participar em algumas provas da Promo1000, em Portugal, e, finalmente, em 2010, participou no campeonato Promo1000, ano em que se sagrou campeão.

Depois da vitória no campeonato, Sandro procurou outros desafios, encontrando um novo rumo profissional no campeonato sul-africano.

Entre 2001 e 2004 correu sem apoios, um período (…) muito difícil pois não tinha verba suficiente para pneus, treinos, etc. Na segunda metade de 2005 surgiu o primeiro apoio oficial, com o convite para correr no Team Yamaha Ulisses. E foi nesse ano que surgiram as primeiras vitórias.

Mesmo sem as melhores condições de pistas e apoios, para Sandro o motociclismo em Angola é uma modalidade muito popular onde há sempre uma multidão a assistir.

Hoje Sandro é publicamente reconhecido, mas diz não ser uma pessoa popular, até porque depois das corridas vai para casa e começa a pensar na semana de treinos que vem a seguir.

Contudo, o reconhecimento popular valeu-lhe o convite para estar à frente da campanha publicitária de uma seguradora, uma experiência que estampou o seu rosto em vários outdoors. Para Sandro, ver os cartazes é sempre uma sensação um pouco contraditória, pois sente-se orgulhoso, mas ao mesmo tempo um pouco envergonhado, talvez por admitir ser um pouco tímido.

No one in the racer’s family was involved with speed, but his willpower and persistence led him to follow what was to become a successful career. Today, he admits that he was interested in motorsports early on, and when he watched races in Luanda he was convinced that it was what he wanted to do.

This was in the 1980s, a time when building a career in motorcycling in Angola wasn’t very easy and Sandro confides: “At first they tried to convince me to do other sports”.

It was in 2001 that Sandro began to compete in the Honda 600 Trophy race, a category in which he raced between 2001 and 2003. Between 2004 and part of 2009, he competed in the 600 category in Angola.

Then in the second half of 2009 came the opportunity to take part in some of the heats for the Promo1000 in Portugal and finally, in 2010, he took part in the Promo1000 championship, and established himself as a champion that year.

After his victory in the championship, Sandro looked for other challenges, and found a new professional direction in the South African championship.

Between 2001 and 2004, he raced without sponsors and it was a very difficult period because he didn’t have enough funds to pay for tyres, training etc. During the second half of 2005 came his first official sponsor with an invitation to race for Yamaha Ulysses Team - this was to be year of his first victories.

Even without the best conditions in terms of tracks and sponsors, Sandro says motorcycling in Angola is a very popular sport which always draws a big crowd to watch the races.

Today, Sandro has been recognised publically, but says he’s not a popular person, because after the races he just goes home and starts to think about the next week’s training.

This recognition brought him an invitation to head the advertising campaign of an insurance company, an experience which has stamped his face on various billboards. Sandro always has somewhat contradictory feelings when he sees the posters – he says he feels proud and a bit embarrassed at the same time, perhaps because he’s a little shy.

in a country with 10 race tracks, where the championship is wellorganised and fast paced. Sandro says “....there are currently racers competing in the world championships of Moto2, Moto3, Supersport and the English championship, with television coverage which is also broadcasted in Angola.”

The Angolan professional realises that he has a high-risk profession, something that he has tried to counter with a lot of physical preparation to keep up his performance and concentration levels. In the morning, Sandro does cardio training and weight-training to tone his muscles and build up their resistance. At the end of the afternoon, he does 10km of running or about 30km of cycling, which he alternates with spinning lessons to vary his training programmes. He confesses that during training he memorises the track of the next race and simulates a round of the track and gear changes at different points of the track, etc.

For Sandro danger brings an adrenaline rush and makes the sport even more attractive. “We have to have fear to be brave – in competition we have to take risks, but we have to realise what is involved and have the courage to do the races”, he says.

On the track, only his mind is there, but on the bench the hearts of his loved ones don’t rest. One example of this is his wife Selma, who used to get very nervous at the beginning, but has always supported him and watches his races whenever she can.

At the end of 2012, Sandro bade farewell to racing, a decision he took due to the need to stay away from competitions for a while to dedicate more time to his family.

But the racer hasn’t left the race tracks completely because he says: “I might consider returning if I got sponsorship to compete in a world championship like Endurance for example”. Sandro has fulfilled so many of his objectives, but still has one to achieve in the world of motorised sport: to compete in Angolan Turismo 2000 or Sport championships.

O profissional angolano tem consciência de que a sua profissão é de elevado risco, algo que tenta contrariar com bastante preparação física para assim conseguir manter os níveis de performance e concentração. De manhã, Sandro faz treino cardio, musculação para tonificação e resistência muscular. Ao final da tarde faz mais 10km de corrida ou cerca de 30km de bicicleta que alterna com aulas de spinning, de forma a variar os programas de treino. Enquanto treina, confessa ir memorizando a pista da próxima prova e simulando uma volta, mudanças nos diversos pontos da pista, etc.

Contudo, para Sandro o perigo é algo que eleva a adrenalina, tornando a modalidade ainda mais apelativa. “Precisamos do medo para sermos corajosos, na competição precisamos arriscar, mas temos que ter noção das implicações e coragem para abordar as provas”, afirma.

Na pista, só a cabeça está presente, mas na bancada o coração dos seus entes queridos não descansa. Exemplo disso é a mulher, Selma, que, no início, ficava bastante nervosa, mas sempre o apoiou e assistiu às provas quando possível.

No final de 2012, Sandro disse adeus às corridas, uma decisão tomada devido à necessidade de se afastar um pouco da competição e assim conseguir dedicar mais tempo à família.

No entanto, o piloto não deixou completamente as pistas, até porque “se conseguisse apoios para competir num campeonato do mundo, de Endurance por exemplo, poderia considerar um regresso.”

Depois de tantos objectivos alcançados, Sandro tem ainda um por concretizar no mundo do desporto motorizado: competir no campeonato Angolano de turismos 2000 ou Sport.

African Beauty Rediscovered

Beleza Africana Redescoberta Nos últimos três anos, Angola tem vindo a transformar-se numa verdadeira fonte de beleza capaz de inspirar o mundo da moda internacional.

Over the last three years, Angola has been transforming into a true source of beauty capable of inspiring the international fashion world.

Muitas jovens deste país do sudoeste africano têm saído do anonimato directamente para as mais conhecidas passerelles e páginas de revistas de moda de todo o mundo, como a Vogue ou a Elle, entre tantas outras de reconhecida notoriedade mundial. Mas grande parte desde fenómeno não tem sido um mero acaso.

Many young people from this South-West African country have gone directly from anonymity to the most famous catwalks and international fashion magazines like Vogue or Elle, among many other world-renowned magazines. But most of this phenomenon hasn’t just happened by chance.

Tudo começou em 2010 com o trabalho da produtora Semba Comunicação e da agência Da Banda Model Management, entidades responsáveis pela organização do concurso Elite Model Look Angola. Fruto dos surpreendentes resultados das primeiras acções de scouting em Angola, a Elite Internacional decidiu desafiar este grupo Angolano a expandir o seu scouting e o concurso para Moçambique e Cabo Verde.

It all started in 2010 with the work of the producer Semba Comunicação and the agency Da Banda Model Management, which were responsible for organizing the Elite Model Look Angola competition.

The competition was the surprising result of the first scouting programmes in Angola, and Elite International decided to invite the Angolan group to expand its scouting and competition to Mozambique and Cape Verde.

Através do trabalho desenvolvido pela Semba Comunicação e pela Da Banda Model Management foi possível reunir todas as condições para que, durante um mês, vários especialistas viajassem por todo o país à procura das próximas manequins de sucesso internacional.

Formada por pessoas de várias áreas, a equipa de scouting promovido pela Da Banda Model Management viajou até às principais províncias do país com um único objectivo: encontrar o próximo rosto capaz de defender a beleza africana a nível internacional.

Semba Comunicação and the Da Banda Models Agency worked to create the conditions for various specialists to travel all over the country for one month looking for the next successful international models. The scouting team promoted by the Da Banda Models Management consisted of people from various areas, who travelled to the main inland provinces with one sole objective: finding the next face to defend African beauty at international level.

Roberta Narciso foi quem venceu o primeiro concurso Elite Model Look Angola (2010). Na altura, tinha apenas 17 anos. Com 1,80m de altura, Roberta venceu o concurso em 2010 e, desde então, a candidata de Luanda tem vindo a destacar-se nas passerelles angolanas e internacionais. Foi umas das 15 finalistas na 27ª Final Internacional do Elite Model Look em Xangai, na China, onde representou Angola entre as cerca de 80 candidatas de todo o mundo, o que lhe possibilitou assinar um contrato com a Elite Model Management.

A carreira de Roberta iniciou-se com o muito fashionable pé direito.

Roberta Narciso won the first Elite Model Look Angola competition in 2010. She was only 17 at the time. Roberta, the 1.80m (5ft 11) tall Luanda candidate won the competition in 2010, since when she has been making her name on the catwalks in Angola and the rest of the world. She was one of 15 finalists in the 27th International Final of the Elite Model Look competition in Shanghai, China, where she represented Angola among 80 candidates from all over the world, a success which led to the signing of a contract with Elite Model Management.

De facto, Roberta foi a primeira angolana a participar na prestigiada semana de Alta Costura parisiense, fazendo o seu debut no desfile de Primavera/Verão 2011 para a casa Valentino. Mais tarde, voltaria a fazer história ao ser a única modelo negra a desfilar para a colecção Outono/Inverno 2012 da Prada (honra antes atribuída a nomes como de Naomi Campbell e Jordan Dunn). O currículo da manequim angolana inclui ainda desfiles em Paris, Milão, Nova Iorque, Londres, Tóquio, Hong Kong e Xanghai, para marcas como Vivienne Westwood, Elie Saab, Jil Sander, Dries Van Noten, Louis Vuitton, Marc Jacobs, Bottega Veneta, Óscar de La Renta, Carolina Herrera ou Philip Treacy, participando ainda em editoriais para revistas como a Vogue Itália e a Elle Itália. Roberta Narciso conseguiu ainda o feito de entrar na lista das 10 novas caras da moda, distinção atribuída pela New York Fashion Magazine.

Roberta’s career began with a very fashionable good start. The model began to make her mark in the history of fashion from her first week outside Angola. In fact, Roberta was the first Angolan to take part in the prestigious Paris Fashion Week Haute Couture, making her debut in the 2011 Spring/Summer fashion show for Valentino. Later she was to make history again as the first black model to model Prada’s 2012 Autumn/Winter collection (an honour previously enjoyed by names like Naomi Campbell and Jordan Dunn). The Angolan model’s portfolio also includes fashion shows in Paris, Milan, New York, London, Tokyo, Hong Kong and Shanghai, for labels like Vivienne Westwood, Elie Saab, Jil Sander, Dries Van Noten, Louis Vuitton, Marc Jacobs, Bottega Veneta, Óscar de La Renta, Carolina Herrera or Philip Treacy, and participations in the editorials of magazines like Vogue Italia and Elle Italia. Roberta Narciso has also achieved a place on the list of the 10 new faces of fashion, awarded by New York Fashion Magazine.

Do mesmo ano que Roberta, surgiu Maria Borges, uma das mais destacadas finalistas do Elite Model Look Angola 2010. Apesar de não ter levado o troféu, Maria tem vindo a destacar-se em Angola e além-fronteiras. Começou a sua carreira internacional em Portugal, onde, no ano 2011, viria a ser agenciada pela L´Agence. Distinguiuse no desfile da criadora portuguesa Fátima Lopes, durante o Portugal Fashion e conseguiu uma grande projecção internacional com a agência Women Managament (e com a sua agência-irmã Supreme Management, em Nova Iorque). Depois disto, o mundo rendeu-se a Maria. Milão, Paris, Nova Iorque e Londres são algumas das cidades onde a modelo já desfilou, tornando-se rapidamente numa das mais promissoras novas africanas, distinção para a qual também contribuiu a sua participação na apresentação da colecção de Alta Costura Outono/Inverno 2012 da casa Givenchy. Maria foi modelo exclusiva da marca, ao lado de nomes como Joan Smalls e Atui Deng. Givenchy seria, então, mais uma marca de luxo a juntar a um currículo que contava já com participações para casas como Tom Ford, Jean Paul Gaultier, Nicole Miller, Bill Blass, Rachel Zoe e Custo Barcelona.

Though she didn’t take the trophy, Maria has been taking great strides in Angola and abroad. She began her international career in Portugal, where she was snapped up by L´Agence in 2011. She distinguished herself modelling for Fátima Lopes, the Portuguese fashion designer, during Portugal Fashion, and was projected onto the international scene with great success by the Women Management agency (and its sister-agency Supreme Management in New York). After that the world was at Maria’s feet. Milan, Paris, New York and London are some of the cities where the model has already worked, and she has rapidly become one of the most promising new African women, also thanks to her participation in the presentation of the Haute Couture Autumn/Winter 2012 collection for Givenchy. Maria was the exclusive model for the label, along with names like Joan Smalls and Atui Deng. Givenchy was to be another luxury label to add to her portfolio, joining Tom Ford, Jean Paul Gaultier, Nicole Miller, Bill Blass, Rachel Zoe and Custo Barcelona.

Em 2011, Elsa Baldaia, sucessora de Roberta Narciso no Elite Model Look Angola, repetiu o feito ao conseguir chegar ao top 15 na final mundial do concurso. Elsa ganhou ainda um contrato de desenvolvimento com a Elite Model Management, tendo já participado em desfiles para Etam e Vivianne Westwood. A modelo brilhou nas passerelles africanas, tendo ganho destaque no Arise Fashion Week, em Lagos (Nigeria), na Mercedes Benz Cape Town Fashion Week e na Johannesburg Fashion Week. Esta jovem oriunda da província do Namibe também tem emprestado a sua beleza inconfundível a editoriais de publicações como a Elle South Africa. Elsa é hoje uma das modelos favoritas do designer moçambicano Taibo Bacar.

In 2011, Elsa Baldaia, Roberta Narciso’s successor at Elite Model Look Angola, repeated the same feat when she reached the top 15 in the world final of the competition. Elsa also won a contract with Elite Model Management, and has already taken part in fashion shows for Etam and Vivianne Westwood. The model shone on the African catwalks, and was successful at the Arise Fashion Week in Lagos (Nigeria), at the Mercedes Benz Cape Town Fashion Week and the Johannesburg Fashion Week. This young woman from the province of Namibe has also lent her distinctive beauty to the editorials of publications like Elle South Africa. Today, Elsa is one of the favourite models of Mozambican designer, Taibo Bacar.

As well as Elsa, there’s a group of rising stars including Mauza António, a model who has been successful at the Portuguese fashion weeks. Mauza modelled for names like Ricardo Preto or Cia MarítimaAt Moda Lisboa and for Anabela Baldaque or Felipe Oliveira Baptista at Portugal Fashion in Oporto. The model is currently beginning a new phase in her international career with Women Management.

In 2012, Alécia Morais’s name was on the list of winners of the Elite Model Look Cape Verde competition. She was chosen to represent her country at Elite Model Look International and was placed in the top 15. This was another African achievement, along with Roberta Narciso and Elsa Baldaia, both of whom are Angolan.

She began her international career in Portugal and England, and today she’s one of the stars of Next Model Management. She’s already been contracted for some of the most sought after jobs in the fashion world such as Hervé Léger and BCBG Max Azria. Sharam was the first Portuguese and Angolan woman to model for the most famous underwear label in the world, Victoria’s Secret. Her face is uniquely exotic and has graced various catalogues and campaigns for labels like Miss Selfridge, Pink by Victoria´s Secret and most recently for 7 for all Mankind, for whose campaign she was photographed by the actor James Franco.

Iniciou a sua carreira internacional entre Portugal e Inglaterra e hoje é uma das estrelas da Next Model Management. Já foi contratada para alguns dos trabalhos mais desejados do mundo da moda, como a Hervé Léger e a BCBG Max Azria. Sharam foi a primeira portuguesa e angolana a participar para a mais conhecida marca de lingerie do mundo, a Victoria’s Secret. O seu rosto, inconfundivelmente exótico, já conheceu destaque em vários catálogos e campanhas para marcas como Miss Selfridge, Pink by Victoria´s Secret e, mais recentemente, para a 7 for all Mankind, campanha na qual Sharam foi fotografada pelo actor James Franco.

Nayma Mingas is also an example of Angolan success in international fashion. The model decided to take a course in modelling with the help of stylist João Carlos (who discovered her when she was 15) and her sister. Though she was refused many jobs because she was black, Nayma didn’t give up and by the end of the 1990s she dominated the Portuguese catwalks, making her one of the most famous LusoAngolan models today. In 1997, she was named best model by the magazine VISÃO, and was the first model to be on the cover of this publication.

Também Nayma Mingas é exemplo do sucesso angolano na moda internacional. Foi com a ajuda do estilista João Carlos, que a descobriu quando ela tinha 15 anos, e da irmã, que a manequim decidiu frequentar o curso de modelo. Apesar de ter sido recusada para muitos trabalhos por ser negra, Nayma não desistiu e no final dos anos 90 dominou as passareles portuguesas tornando-se hoje em dia uma das modelos luso-angolanas mais famosas. Em 1997 foi distinguida pela revista VISÃO como melhor modelo, tendo sido a primeira modelo a estar na capa dessa publicação.

Todo este texto sobre o invejável percurso que as modelos africanas têm vindo a traçar não estaria completo sem uma referência ao facto de que, até ao dia 19 de Dezembro de 2012, a mulher mais bonita do mundo era africana. Lelia Lopes foi a primeira angolana a alcançar o título de Miss Universo, a quarta africana a deter a distinção (depois de misses da África do Sul, Namíbia e Botswana, em décadas passadas), a terceira de expressão portuguesa (depois de duas vencedoras do Brasil na década de 1960) e a quarta mulher negra a deter o título de Miss Universo (Mpule Kwelagobe - Botswana, Wendy Fitzwilliam -Trinidad e Tobago, Janelle Commissiong - Trinidad e Tobago). Leila foi igualmente a Miss Universo com o reinado mais longo, detendo a coroa durante 420 dias.

This article has traced the enviable path followed by the African models and wouldn’t be complete without mentioning the fact that, until 19th December 2012, the most beautiful woman in the world was African. África só agora começa a substituir as ideias habitualmente associadas à sua sociedade – pobreza, desigualdade ou violência. Outrora inquestionáveis, hoje estas características dissipam-se em conceitos positivos que reflectem o continente perfeitamente – como beleza, criatividade, entusiasmo ou originalidade. A imprensa de moda italiana atribuiu, durante 2012, diversos artigos e publicações ao potencial da cultura africana. A edição de Maio/Junho da revista L’Uomo Vogue, inteiramente dedicada a sublinhar a riqueza inerente ao continente africano e às oportunidades que este oferece, publicou uma entrevista ao Secretário Geral das Nações Unidas, Ban Ki-moon, uma das figuras mais empenhadas em valorizar a imagem do continente. “África não precisa de caridade – África precisa de investimentos e parcerias”, afirmava polemicamente Ki-moon, “unir forças com a sociedade civil e o sector privado, incluindo indústrias não tradicionais, como o sector da moda, tornou-se indispensável. Desenvolvimento sustentável é a minha prioridade principal”, afirmou.

Num curto espaço de tempo o International Heral Tribune publicava um artigo escrito pela respeitada jornalista de moda Suzy Menkes centrado nas possibilidades de negócios no continente, que o The New York Times propagou entusiasticamente e, desde logo, a notícia de que África estaria a entrar na arena da moda estava espalhada.

Capas de revistas, conferências em diversas capitais, como a International Herald Tribune Conference, organizações não-governamentais, como a Fashion 4 Development, encabeçada pela editora da Vogue Itália Franca Sozzani e semanas da moda, como a Africa Fashion Week, na África do Sul, multiplicaram-se.

Em Nova Iorque, ainda em Maio de 2012, um painel de discussão sob o tema “Design Africa” teve lugar na Soho House. Muitos questionaram a ética de promoção das indústrias da moda e do luxo num continente onde muitos passam fome. Outros defenderam a necessidade de um rebranding do continente para impulsionar os negócios.

Enquanto uns reduziam o continente africano a uma “nova Itália”, principalmente devido à alta qualidade das suas técnicas de produção artesanais, outros afirmavam essencial a revisão das leis associadas às indústrias têxteis.

Numa altura em que o mundo está com os olhos postos no potencial africano ao serviço da indústria da moda, quer pela sua riqueza cultural, pela alta qualidade dos seus têxteis e artesanato ou criatividade dos seus designers, é importante que “os governos africanos tomem decisões essenciais que promovam a estabilidade política e facilitem os negócios”, escreveu o blogue dedicado à criatividade africana Design África.

“Em geral, a indústria de artigos de luxo é bastante ignorante em relação às dinâmicas que envolvem o desenvolvimento de negócios em África”, disse à Reuters Uche Okonkwo, Director Executivo do grupo de consultoria Luxe Corp., que trabalha com marcas como Chanel e Dior, parte do grupo LVMH. No entanto, segundo o grupo de consultoria Bain & Company, África conta com mais de 120,000 milionários, comparativamente a cerca de 95,000 na Rússia.

Louis Vuitton, o maior grupo de produtos de luxo do mundo, possui já boutiques abertas em Joanesburgo e na Cidade do Cabo, mas Francesco Trapani, Chefe Executivo de joalharia e relógios, afirmou à Reuters que África “representa ainda um mercado muito pequeno” para a marca.

Quem conhece África sabe que seria apenas uma questão de tempo e oportunidade até que o mundo da moda começasse a acordar para o potencial do continente-berço e da sua cultura, tanto na perspectiva da criatividade como de recursos e negócios. Reuters. A casa alemã Hugo Boss e a marca de joalharia de luxo Cartier, gerida pelo grupo suíço Richemont, já estão activas no continente africano. Guillaume de Seynes, Director do grupo francês de Hermès International e membro da sexta geração da família Hermès, afirmou numa conferência em Roma, organizada por Suzy Menkes, que África pode ser a “nova fronteira” para a sétima geração, sugerindo que a marca não está com pressa em estabelecer uma presença na região. Segundo a Reuters, Seynes afirmou que o grupo enfrentou dificuldades em encontrar parceiros locais adequados para desenvolver negócios.

In New York, back in May 2012, a discussion panel on the theme of “Design Africa” was held at Soho House. Many questioned the ethics of promoting fashion and luxury industries in a continent where so many go hungry. Others defended the need for a rebranding of the continent to stimulate business. While some reduced the African continent to a “new Italy”, largely due to the high quality of its traditional production techniques, others thought it was essential to revise the laws associated with the textile industries.

At a time when the eyes of the world are on the African potential in the fashion industry, because of its cultural wealth and the high quality of its textiles and handicrafts or the creativity of its designers, it’s important for “African governments to take essential decisions to promote political stability and facilitate business”, wrote the blog dedicated to African creativity called Design Africa.

“The luxury industry is generally very ignorant about the dynamics involved in developing business in Africa”, Reuters was told by UcheOkonkwo, CEO of the consultancy group Luxe Corp., which works with brands like Chanel and Dior and is part of the LVMH group.

But according to the consultancy group Bain & Company, Africa has more than 120,000 millionaires compared to around 95,000 in Russia.

Louis Vuitton, the largest luxury product brand in the world, has already opened boutiques in Johannesburg and Cape Town, but Francesco Trapani, Chief Executive of Jewellery and watches told Reuters that Africa, “still represents a very small market” for the brand.

People who know Africa are aware that it was only a question of time and opportunity before the fashion world would begin to wake up to the potential of the continentcradle and its culture, both in terms of creativity and of resources and business. But for this to happen, Africans themselves had to be the first ones to project their talents abroad.

In 2013, Ermenegildo Zegna is planning to open commercial spaces in Luanda and Lagos, to join those already operating in Egypt and Morocco. The luxury brand Gucci, acquired by the French group PPR, also intends to go into Angola and Nigeria, according to Reuters. The German company Hugo Boss and the luxury jewellery brand Cartier, managed by the Swiss group, Richemont, are already active in the African continent. At a conference in Rome organised by Suzy Menkes, Guillaume de Seynes, director of the French group, Hermès International, and member of the sixth generation of the Hermès family, said that Africa may be the “new frontier” for the seventh generation, suggesting that the brand isn’t in any hurry to establish its presence in the region. According to Reuters, Seynes said the group found it difficult to find the right local partners to do business.

Only now is Africa beginning to change the ideas of poverty, inequality or violence habitually associated with its society. They were indisputable in the past, but today these characteristics are being dispelled by positive ideas which reflect the continent perfectly – like beauty, creativity, enthusiasm or originality. The Italian fashion press published various articles and publications about the potential of African culture in 2012. The May/June issue of the magazine L’Uomo Vogue, was totally dedicated to emphasising the wealth of the African continent and the opportunities this creates, and published an interview with the UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon, one of the public figures most dedicated to improving the image of the continent. “Africa doesn’t need charity. But it does need investment and partnerships”, said Ki-moon controversially, “Joining forces with civil society and private sector, including non-traditional players, like the fashion industry, has become essential. Sustainable development is my top priority”, he stated.

In Uganda, Bono and Ali Hewson, the creators of the clothing label, Edun, joined Renzo Rosso, from the Diesel Group for the presentation of the new brand, Diesel+Edun, which will be produced entirely in the African continent. According to Bono, rather than being a poor continent, Africa is actually rich in everything: people, land, diversity - and especially young people, with sixty per cent of the population below the age of fifty-five.

The eyes of the fashion world turned to the African continent in 2012 and everything suggests that 2013 will be an even more important year for the development of business in the region. It’s vital for decision-makers, investors and entrepreneurs to understand the possibilities available and to balance them with the delicate situation in the continent.

For now, let’s just wait and see.

In a short period of time, the International Herald Tribune published an article written by the respected fashion journalist Suzy Menkes which focused on business possibilities in the continent, which was propagated enthusiastically by the New York Times, and the news that Africa would be coming into the fashion arena was immediately spread.

José Silva Pinto apresenta, no dia 14 de Março, em Luanda, o álbum fotográfico “Cá Entre Nós”. Um conjunto de 800 fotografias, captadas entre 2005 e 2001, de norte a sul e da costa ao interior de Angola, onde as gentes, as tradições, as paisagens, a vida do país são revelados num registo intenso e pessoal. Uma oportunidade de conhecer Angola, pelas lentes e pelos olhos de um dos mais consagrados fotógrafos angolanos da actualidade.

Pelo quarto ano consecutivo, o concurso de modelos mais prestigiado do mundo regressa a Angola. Ao longo das próximas semanas, a produção do Elite Model Look percorre o país à procura de futuras modelos de sucesso internacional. Os castings estão abertos a todas candidatas com idades compreendidas entre os 14 e 22 anos e mais de 1 metro e 74 de altura.

Castings will be open to all candidates between the ages of 14 and 22 and with a height of over 1metre 74 (5ft 8).

José Silva Pinto will present a photographic album called “Cá Entre Nós” on 14th March in Luanda. A set of 800 photographs taken between 2005 and 2011, from the north to the south and from the coast to the inland areas of Angola, show people, traditions, landscapes and the life in the country, with an intense and personal quality.

It’s an opportunity to see Angola through the lens and eyes of one of the most respected Angolan photographers of today.

AGENDA Clarice Lispector Em Abril, integrada nas comemorações do Ano do Brasil em Portugal, e 35 anos após a morte da escritora brasileira de origem ucraniana, será apresentada a exposição Clarice Lispector - A Hora da Estrela, na Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian, em Lisboa. A mostra é constituída por textos, fac-símiles, fotografias e documentos pessoais de uma das mais destacadas vozes da literatura de língua portuguesa.

In April, as part of the Brazil Year celebrations in Portugal this year, and 35 years after her death, the Ukranian born Brazilian writer Clarice Lispector is featured in an exhibition Clarice Lispector, Hour of the Star at the Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon. The exhibition includes texts, facsimiles, photographs and personal documents of one of the most important and unique literary voices in the Portuguese language.

AGENDA Jazz na Cidade do Cabo O Festival Internacional de Jazz da Cidade do Cabo comemora a sua 14ª edição nos dias 5 e 6 de Abril.

Este evento apresenta 40 músicos, entre talentos locais e internacionais. Rashid Lombard é o mentor deste projecto, que promete jazz para todos os gostos – do tradicional ao popular. Entre os nomes do cartaz está o americano Jill Scott, vencedor de 3 Grammys, e o sul africano Jimmy Dludlu, especialista na fusão entre jazz e sons africanos.

AGENDA Titanic II Se o Titanic foi “um navio de sonho”, o Titanic II vai ser “o navio onde os sonhos se tornam realidade”. Foi assim que o bilionário australiano Clive Palmer apresentou, o seu projecto de construção de uma réplica do navio que naufragou em Abril de 1912. Até a indumentária dos passageiros será semelhante à que era usada na década de 1920. Para o promotor, o Titanic II será uma “réplica à escala real” do seu antecessor. Terá cerca de 270 metros de comprimento e capacidade para 2435 passageiros e 900 tripulantes. Os passageiros terão ginásio, banho turco, campo de squash, piscina, teatro e casino a bordo, mas o navio não terá televisões, à semelhança do Titanic. Além das características do navio original, também o vestuário da época será recriado. Nos quartos, os passageiros vão encontrar a indumentária usada na década de 1920, que terão de vestir para ajudar a compor o cenário. Os fatos estão incluídos no preço do bilhete, que ainda não foi anunciado e se tudo correr como esperado, o Titanic II estará pronto a navegar no final de 2016.

O Festival de Cinema Itinerante da Língua Portuguesa (FESTIN) regressa ao Cinema São Jorge, em Lisboa, entre 3 e 10 de Abril. Nesta 4ª edição, o festival homenageia o cinema angolano.

O evento celebra a expressão cinematográfica de origem lusófona, com o objectivo de criar um intercâmbio cultural e social, através da exibição de produções internacionais, tal como da realização de exposições, oficinas e festas. Angola vai apresentar-se em tela nesta edição.

————————————————————————————— FESTIN celebrates Angolan films The travelling Film Festival dedicated to the Portuguese language (FESTIN) returns to São Jorge Cinema in Lisbon between 3rd and 10th April. In this fourth edition, the festival celebrates Angolan cinema. The event itself celebrates the expression of the lusophonic cinematographic language, aiming to create a social and cultural exchange with the screening of international productions as well as exhibitions, workshops and parties. Angola will be very much present on screen in this edition.

If the Titanic was a “ship of dreams”, Titanic II will be “the ship where dreams come true”. This was how Australian billionaire Clive Palmer presented his project for building a replica of the ship that sank in April 1912.

Even the clothing of the passengers will be similar to what was worn in the 1920s. The promoter says Titanic II will be a “true to scale replica” of its predecessor. It will be about 270metres long, with capacity for 2435 passengers and 900 crew members. The passengers will have a gymnasium, Turkish bath, squash court, swimming pool, theatre and casino on board, but, like the Titanic, the ship won’t have televisions. As well as the characteristics of the original ship, the clothing of the time will also be recreated. In the cabins, the passengers will find clothes worn in the 1920s, which they’ll have to wear to set the scene. The costumes are included in the price of the ticket, which has not been announced yet, and if all goes according to plan, Titanic II will be ready to sail at the end of 2016.

OS Kuduristas Tour Internacional Kuduristas International Tour

Kuduristas é um programa de promoção internacional da cultura jovem angolana. O kuduro é uma expressão musical urbana que reflecte uma Luanda frenética, através de movimentos energéticos de dança e de compassos ritmados de música. O projecto Kuduristas convidou Estocolmo, Paris, Amesterdão e Nova Iorque a experienciar o kuduro, através de “batalhas de dança” improvisadas nas ruas das cidades. Os cantores e dançarinos angolanos, vestidos segundo as cores que reflectem a personalidade de cada um, promoveram o intercâmbio cultural, ao partilharem o kuduro internacionalmente, como se estivessem numa tradicional “festa de quintal”. Nesta tour, os Kuduristas proporcionaram uma viagem experimental pelos sons, cheiros e sabores angolanos.

Kuduristas is a programme to promote Angolan youth culture around the world. Kuduro is an urban musical expression that reflects the energy of Luanda with frenetic dance movements and rhythmic steps. The project Kuduristas has invited Stockholm, Paris, Amsterdam and New York to experience Kuduro first hand with improvised dance wars in the streets. Angolan dancers and singers, dressed in colours reflecting their personalities, aim to promote a cultural exchange by sharing kuduro with other countries as if it were a party in their own back yard. On this tour, the Kuduristas take us on a trip through the sounds, smells and flavours of Angola.

No Fly Zone A inauguração simbólica no Museu Berardo em Lisboa coube ao embaixador de Angola em Portugal, José Marcos Barrica, que, satisfeito com a iniciativa, exaltou os criadores angolanos na promoção e na divulgação dos valores culturais angolanos.

Entre os presentes destacou-se o Comendador Joe Berard, detentor da colecção Berardo, Pedro Lapa, director do Museu Berardo, Cecília Baptista, cônsul-geral de Angola em Portugal e António Monteiro, antigo ministro dos Negócios Estrangeiros e das Comunidades Portuguesas (entre 2004 e 2005) e ex-representante de Portugal junto da então Comissão Conjunta Político-Militar para a paz em Angola (em 1991).Este importante evento reuniu grande parte do meio artístico português, incluíndo outros directores de museus, galeriastas de arte, assim como amigos de Angola.

The symbolic opening of the Berardo Museum in Lisbon was presided over by the Angolan Ambassador in Portugal, José Marcos Barrica who praised Angolan designers for their part in spreading Angolan cultural values abroad.

Among those present were Comendador Joe Berardo, keeper of the Berardo collection, Pedro Lapa, Director of the Museum, Cecília Baptista, General Consul of Angola in Portugal, António Monteiro, ex- Foreign Affairs and Portuguese Communities Minister (between 2004 and 2005), ex-representative of Portugal together with the then Joint Political Military Commission for peace in Angola (in 1991).

This important event brought together many members of Portugal’s artistic communities including other museum directors, art gallery owners and many friends of Angola.
