UNUSUAL HOBBIES: DISCOVERING THE JOY OF DOING SOMETHING DIFFERENT matchbooks, or even objects associated with particular historical events. The appeal is often about more than owning things. Each object can tell a story, provide a connection to the past, or represent a particular place and time.
Hobbies are often associated with familiar activities such as gardening, reading, cooking, painting, or playing sports. But there is a fascinating world of unusual hobbies that prove there is no limit to the ways people can spend their free time. From collecting strange objects to creating tiny works of art, unusual hobbies can be entertaining, creative, educational, and surprisingly rewarding. One unusual hobby is miniature modeling. Enthusiasts create incredibly detailed versions of houses, rooms, shops, gardens, and even entire towns. Some miniature artists spend hundreds of hours designing tiny furniture, painting walls, and creating realistic details that can be almost impossible to see without a magnifying glass. The hobby combines creativity, patience, craftsmanship, and imagination. Another fascinating hobby is urban sketching. While drawing itself is not unusual, urban sketchers make a point of drawing scenes from everyday life while sitting in public places. They might sketch a busy café, an old building, a train station, or people walking through a park. Rather than trying to create a perfect drawing, the goal is often to capture the atmosphere of a particular moment. It encourages people to slow down and pay attention to details they might normally overlook. Some people take their love of collecting in unusual directions. Instead of stamps or coins, collectors may gather vintage postcards, antique keys, unusual rocks, old maps,

For people who enjoy the outdoors, geocaching offers a hobby that feels like a modern treasure hunt. Participants use GPS coordinates to locate hidden containers placed by other people. The containers can be found in parks, neighborhoods, forests, and other public locations. Geocaching combines technology, exploration, problem‑solving, and adventure, making an ordinary walk feel like a small expedition. There are also hobbies that involve making remarkably tiny objects. Miniature food artists, for example, create tiny cakes, sandwiches, fruits, and other foods using clay or other materials. The finished creations can be so realistic that they look edible at first glance. Other people enjoy creating tiny books, jewelry, paintings, or sculptures. These hobbies demonstrate how much creativity can fit into a very small space. Unusual hobbies can also provide unexpected social connections. Online communities allow people with highly specific interests to share their projects, exchange advice, participate in challenges, and make friends with others who understand their enthusiasm. What might seem strange or obscure to one person can be a source of belonging for another. Perhaps the greatest benefit of an unusual hobby is that it gives people permission to be curious. There is no requirement for a hobby to be practical, profitable, or impressive. Sometimes the best reason to pursue an activity is simply because it makes you happy. Unusual hobbies remind us that free time does not have to be spent following conventional expectations. Whether you are fascinated by miniature worlds, forgotten objects, hidden treasures, or something nobody else quite understands, there is always room for another interesting way to play, create, and explore.

KEEPING HOWARD COUNTY COMFORTABLE
exactly that for nearly 50 years.
When Maryland weather decides to go from “open the windows” to “turn on the air conditioning” practically overnight, it helps to know someone who can keep your home comfortable. For Howard County families, Ron Air Heating & Air Conditioning has been doing
Based in Dayton, Ron Air is a family-owned and operated HVAC company serving Howard County and surrounding communities. The business was founded by Ronald “Ronney” Hines in 1977 after he earned master licenses in HVAC and electrical work and gained experience in the heating and air-conditioning industry. Today, Ron Air Heating & Air Conditioning continues that local, family-business tradition, offering installation, maintenance and repair for heating and cooling systems. Services include air conditioning, heat pumps and gas furnaces, along with indoor air-quality solutions designed to keep homes comfortable through steamy Maryland summers and those “why is it this cold?” winter mornings. Perhaps what makes Ron Air stand out most is its longevity. Plenty has changed in Howard County since the late 1970s, but the company has remained locally rooted and family operated. In fact, Ronney once described his wife, son and granddaughter as working alongside him in the business—a true multigenerational operation. That local connection extends beyond service calls. Ron Air has also appeared among supporters of Howard County 4-H programs, reflecting the Hines family’s longstanding ties to the organization and community. So whether your air conditioner quits during an August heat wave or your furnace chooses the coldest morning of the year to misbehave, Ron Air offers something especially valuable: experience, local roots and neighbors who know their way around a thermostat. Sometimes comfort really is close to home.

FROM BACKYARD-TO-BACKYARD OASIS Some people look at a backyard and see grass that needs mowing. The team at Rhine Landscaping sees possibilities; a stone patio, an outdoor kitchen, a cozy fireplace, lush gardens or maybe even a swimming pool calling your name. Based in western Howard County and serving Ellicott City and surrounding communities, Rhine Landscaping has deep local roots. The business grew from the Rhine family farm, which has been in the family since 1923. Jay Rhine began cutting grass and landscaping in the 1990s to help support the farm, and the operation eventually developed into the full‑service outdoor living company it is today. And “full‑service” is the right description. Rhine handles landscape design and maintenance, swimming pools, patios, walkways, retaining walls, drainage solution, fireplaces, fire pits, outdoor kitchens, decks and pavilions. The company also designs and builds swimming pools and spas and offers drainage and exterior waterproofing solutions. Because many of these services are handled in‑house, homeowners can work with one company to coordinate multiple pieces of a major outdoor project. For Ellicott City homeowners, Rhine emphasizes creating landscapes that are both beautiful and practical. Designers consider the individual features of a property, incorporating plants and hardscaping to create outdoor spaces that complement the home and can provide interest throughout the seasons. Maintenance services can help keep everything looking good long after the final plant goes into the ground. Whether the goal is freshening up tired landscaping or transforming the entire backyard into a staycation‑worthy retreat, Rhine approaches outdoor spaces with an eye toward how homeowners actually want to live in them. Because sometimes the best room in the house isn’t in the house at all.

MORE THAN NUTS & BOLTS
There’s something refreshingly old‑school about walking into a hardware store, explaining your latest home‑improvement predicament and having someone actually know how to help. At Kendall Hardware in Clarksville, that kind of service has been part of the business for generations. Located at 12260 Clarksville Pike, Kendall Hardware Inc traces its roots to the late 1940s, when Charles Kendall opened a feed and farm store with the help of his family. As Clarksville changed, so did the business, eventually evolving into the full‑service hardware store generations of Howard County residents know today. And don’t let the hometown atmosphere fool you—there’s a lot packed inside. Kendall carries hardware, tools, plumbing and electrical supplies, lumber and building materials, paint, lawn and garden products and workwear. Need something they don’t have? The store offers access to an online catalog of more than 70,000 items that can be ordered for pickup. Then there are the services—the things that can turn a five‑minute hardware run into a project‑saving mission. Kendall offers key cutting and lock servicing, screen and glass repair, propane refills, equipment rentals and delivery. Its rental center even offers four‑hour, daily and weekly options, so you don’t have to buy an expensive piece of equipment you may use exactly once. Perhaps the biggest draw, though, is something you can’t put on a shelf: knowledgeable, personal service. Kendall proudly describes itself as having a “big store look with a small store feel,” and after more than 75 years, that philosophy still fits. Whether you’re a contractor gathering supplies or a homeowner standing there with a mysterious screw asking, “Do you have one of these?” Kendall Hardware is ready to help. Because sometimes the most valuable tool in the store is simply someone who knows what they’re talking about.

SHED HAPPENS: MYERS MINI BARNS
Running out of room in the garage? Dreaming of a backyard greenhouse? Need a chicken coop, a pool house or simply a better place to hide all the stuff that mysteriously accumulates over the years? Myers Mini Barns has a building for that.

Located at 16041 Frederick Road in Lisbon, Myers Mini Barns has been a family‑owned and operated business for more than four decades. Founder William Melvin “Junior” Myers started the company in 1982, and his son Gary took over in 2005, continuing the family tradition of helping customers create practical—and attractive—outdoor spaces. Despite the name, “mini barns” are only the beginning. Myers offers sheds and garages in a variety of styles, along with gazebos, pavilions, pergolas, greenhouses, playsets, pool houses, chicken coops, dog kennels and outdoor furniture. Many buildings can be customized with different colors, doors, windows and other features, so your new shed doesn’t have to look like an afterthought sitting in the backyard. Can’t quite picture what you want? Customers can use the company’s 3D design tool to customize a building and see real‑time pricing or stop by for help creating something that fits their property and needs. And a trip to Myers can turn into a family outing. During the warmer months, visitors can browse the buildings and outdoor furniture while enjoying a treat from Alex’s Ice Cream & Snow Cones. Junior’s Produce Stand, renamed in honor of the company’s founder, also operates seasonally. With American‑made products, generations of family history and enough backyard possibilities to get your imagination working overtime, Myers Mini Barns proves one thing: When “shed happens,” they’re ready for it.

makes it easier to prepare meals ahead of time, which can be especially helpful during busy weeks. Roasting is another favorite technique for autumn cooking. Vegetables such as carrots, squash, potatoes, and cauliflower become tender and flavorful when roasted in the oven. A little olive oil, salt, pepper, and a few favorite herbs can bring out their natural sweetness. Roasted vegetables can be served as a side dish, added to salads, or combined with grains and other ingredients to create a satisfying main course.

As the days grow shorter and the air begins to cool, fall brings a welcome invitation to slow down and spend more time in the kitchen. Fall cooking is all about warmth, comfort, and seasonal ingredients that fill the house with wonderful aromas. One of the best things about fall cooking is the abundance of seasonal produce. Apples, pumpkins, squash, sweet potatoes, pears, cranberries, and Brussels sprouts all become stars of the kitchen. These ingredients can be used in both sweet and savory dishes, making it easy to create meals that reflect the flavors of the season. A basket of crisp apples, for example, can become a simple snack, a homemade applesauce, or a fragrant apple crisp. Fall is also the perfect time for slow‑cooked meals. When temperatures drop, there is something especially satisfying about preparing a pot of chili, stew, or soup and letting it simmer while the flavors develop. The process can make an ordinary evening feel cozy and inviting. Slow cooking also
Fall cooking isn’t just about dinner. Breakfast and dessert can take on seasonal flavors, too. Warm oatmeal topped with apples and cinnamon makes a comforting start to a chilly morning. Pancakes can be flavored with pumpkin or spices, while muffins filled with apples, pears, or cranberries are perfect for a weekend breakfast. For dessert, classic favorites such as pumpkin pie, apple crisp, spice cake, and pear crumble capture the essence of autumn. Spices also play an important role in fall cooking. Cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, ginger, and allspice can instantly create a sense of warmth. Even a simple recipe can feel distinctly seasonal when these familiar aromas fill the kitchen. Perhaps the greatest appeal of fall cooking is the feeling it creates. Cooking during autumn encourages us to gather around the table, share comforting meals, and enjoy the simple pleasures of the season. Whether you’re preparing an elaborate dinner or making a simple pot of soup, fall cooking is an opportunity to embrace seasonal ingredients, try something new, and make everyday meals a little more comforting.

A beautiful yard should be a place to enjoy—not a never‑ending weekend to‑do list. That’s where SLS Landscaping Services comes in. Based in Woodbine, SLS is a full‑service landscaping company serving residential and commercial properties throughout Howard County, Carroll County and portions of Montgomery County. From routine lawn maintenance to complete outdoor transformations, the company focuses on creating attractive, functional spaces while taking some of the work off the property owner’s plate. SLS has roots in Sunshine Lawn Service, where owner Trevor Hubbard began working in 2007 while attending the University of Maryland. What started as college‑break work grew into something much bigger. Hubbard eventually helped manage crews and daily operations before purchasing the business in 2014. Since then, SLS has expanded its territory, equipment and services. Today, those services cover just about every season. Lawn mowing, pruning, aerating, seeding, mulching and planting keep properties looking polished, while landscape design can give tired yards a fresh start. For bigger projects, SLS offers hardscaping such as patios, walkways, retaining walls and fire pits, as well as grading, drainage solutions and land clearing. When winter arrives, commercial snow and ice management keeps the team busy even after the grass stops growing. Perhaps most importantly, SLS understands that a yard isn’t just something to maintain. It’s part of your home, your business and the way you enjoy your outdoor space. Whether you need help taming an unruly lawn or have bigger plans for your property, SLS Landscaping Services can help turn “we really need to do something with this yard” into “why didn’t we do this sooner?” Because sometimes a better backyard starts with getting your weekends back.

A little seasonal maintenance can help prevent costly repairs, improve energy efficiency, and keep your home comfortable throughout the colder months. From checking your heating system to cleaning your gutters, taking care of a few important tasks now can make a big difference later.
One of the first places to focus is your roof. Inspect the roof for missing, damaged, or loose shingles, and look for areas where water might be able to enter. If you are comfortable doing so safely, check the roof from the ground with binoculars, or consider having a professional inspect it. Small roof problems can become much more serious when exposed to heavy rain, snow, and freezing temperatures.
Gutters and downspouts also deserve attention in the fall. Leaves, twigs, and other debris can quickly build up and prevent water from flowing properly. Clogged gutters can cause water to overflow and damage siding, foundations, landscaping, and roofs. Clean the gutters thoroughly and make sure downspouts direct water several feet away from the foundation. Installing gutter guards can also help reduce future buildup.

Fall is also an excellent time to inspect doors and windows for drafts. Small gaps around frames can allow heated air to escape and cold air to enter, making your heating system work harder. Check the condition of weatherstripping and caulking around windows and doors, replacing damaged materials as needed. Even relatively simple improvements can make rooms feel warmer and may help lower energy costs.
Your heating system should be another fall priority. Before the first really cold day arrives, have your furnace or heating system inspected and serviced if necessary. Replace the air filter, make sure vents are not blocked, and check that warm air is circulating properly throughout the home. If you use a fireplace or wood‑burning stove, have the chimney inspected and cleaned as recommended. These steps can improve efficiency and help reduce potential safety hazards.

Do not forget about outdoor plumbing. If you have exterior faucets, disconnect and store garden hoses before freezing weather arrives. Shut off outdoor water supplies if your plumbing system allows it, and drain the lines to reduce the risk of frozen or burst pipes. Insulating exposed pipes in unheated areas can provide additional protection when temperatures drop. Fall is also a good time to inspect your home for signs of unwanted pests. As temperatures cool, insects and rodents may look for warm places to shelter. Check around the foundation, doors, windows, vents, and other openings for cracks or gaps. Sealing potential entry points can help keep pests outside where they belong. Keeping firewood stored away from the house can also discourage insects and rodents from moving indoors. Take some time to inspect your home’s exterior as well. Look for peeling paint, damaged siding, cracked masonry, or areas where moisture appears to be collecting. Addressing these issues before winter can prevent water from getting into vulnerable areas and causing additional damage. Trim tree branches that are too close to the roof or power lines, particularly branches that could become hazardous during winter storms. Finally, use fall as an opportunity to test your home’s safety equipment. Check smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors to make sure they are working properly, and replace batteries when needed. Review your emergency supplies and make sure flashlights, batteries, and other essentials are easy to find. Fall home maintenance does not have to be overwhelming. By spending a little time preparing your home before winter arrives, you can catch small problems early, protect your property, and create a more comfortable living environment. A well‑maintained home is better prepared for whatever the colder months bring, allowing you to enjoy the season with greater peace of mind.

We hope to support entrepreneurship and build local economic opportunities. Each event will center on a theme; we plan to have activities, vendors, food and fun! These themed gatherings will feature local vendors, artisans, food partners, interactive activities, and family‑friendly experiences that encourage neighbors to shop local, connect intentionally, and engage with one another in a dynamic and supportive setting. Beyond commerce, our goal is to cultivate local economic opportunity, encourage entrepreneurship, and create a recurring destination event that reinforces pride in our community. Saturday events are scheduled from 10AM‑2PM. Learn more at theclarksburgyard.com/staylocalsaturdays. FREE KINGSLEY SCHOOLHOUSE TOURS IN CLARKSBURG Join us on the first Sunday of each month, 1‑4pm, through October for free tours of the historic one‑room Kingsley Schoolhouse. Built in 1893 in response to the need for a school within walking distance of farms located in the Little Bennett Creek Valley, the Kingsley Schoolhouse served the local, rural farming community until it closed in 1935. Each year, around 20 children ranging in age from 6‑12 years old attended the school. Since the immediate area was known locally as Froggy Hollow, due to the large number of frogs that could be heard peeping in the low‑lying area, the school acquired the nickname of Froggy Hollow School. Kingsley Schoolhouse, Little Bennett Regional Park, 24758 Clarksburg Road, Clarksburg Maryland 20871. https://montgomeryparks.org/parks‑and‑trails/ little‑bennett‑regional‑park/historic‑sites/kingsley‑schoolhouse/ GERMANTOWN COMMUNITY FLEA MARKET, First Saturdays through November, 8am‑1pm, MARC rail parking lot, Bowman Mill Dr & Germantown Rd, Germantown Maryland 20874. GENERAL NOTES
FRATINO & MATISSE: TO SEE THIS LIGHT AGAIN Two generations. One electric conversation. Contemporary painter Louis Fratino enters into a vibrant dialogue with modern master Henri Matisse in Fratino and Matisse: To See This Light Again. Born in Annapolis and trained at the Maryland Institute College of Art, Fratino spent years studying the Baltimore Museum of Art’s expansive Matisse collection. This influence shines through in his luminous interiors, sensual color, and intimate portrayals of the male figure. This striking exhibition brings Fratino’s paintings together with masterworks by Matisse including figures, interiors, still lifes, and self‑portraits. Side by side, their works ignite a dynamic exchange about color, light, pattern, and the emotional power of painting. Baltimore Museum of Art, through September 6. Learn more at artbma.org.
