(BPT) As temperatures rise and lawns come out of winter dormancy, the first lawn mowing of the season becomes a critical reset point for overall turf health. Lawn care experts say how homeowners approach this first cut can influence everything from root development to how well the lawn holds up against heat, drought and weeds in the months ahead.

“Early in the season, your lawn is transitioning into an active growth phase, so it’s more sensitive to stress,” said Jason Wilk, senior product manager at ECHO Incorporated. “How you handle that first mow can either support that transition or set it back.”

Clear debris and address winter damage first

A strong start begins with clearing what winter left behind. Sticks, leaves and compacted debris don’t just get in the way, they can block airflow and sunlight at the soil level, leading to slower, uneven growth.

Before that first mow, Wilk recommends walking the yard to remove buildup and assess any light damage to shrubs, small branches or overgrowth. For quick cleanup, a battery powered blower like the ECHO DPB 2500 Blower can efficiently clear debris, while a compact pruning tool like the ECHO DHS 3006 Pruning Saw is well suited for trimming small limbs and winter dieback.

Taking the time to fully reset the yard before mowing creates a more consistent surface and reduces the likelihood of damaging equipment during that first pass.

Prep your equipment to protect the lawn

After months of sitting idle, lawn equipment should be checked to ensure it’s operating properly before the first use. Even small maintenance oversights can impact cut quality and stress your lawn during a critical growth period.

“A sharp blade doesn’t just improve how your lawn looks, it helps protect it,” Wilk explained. “Clean cuts heal faster, while torn grass blades can lead to moisture loss and make the lawn more vulnerable to disease.”

Before your first mow, Wilk recommends running through a quick equipment check:

Inspect and sharpen mower blades: Dull blades tear grass instead of cutting it cleanly, which can lead to browning and increased susceptibility to disease

the plant and weaken its ability to recover.

Turf experts widely follow the “one third rule,” meaning no more than one third of the grass blade should be removed at a time.

“People want that fresh cut look right away, but taking too much off too quickly can set your lawn back,” Wilk added. “A more gradual approach helps it recover and grow in more evenly.”

For areas a lawn mower can’t easily reach, like around trees, fences and tight edges, a string trimmer such as the ECHO DSRM 225 String Trimmer can help create a clean, finished look without overcutting those more delicate areas.

Choose the right lawn mower for early spring conditions

Early season lawns are often thicker and uneven, making that first mow more demanding than routine cuts later in the year. Using a lawn mower that can maintain consistent power and cutting performance in these conditions helps prevent uneven results and reduces unnecessary stress on the lawn.

Walk behind mowers like the ECHO DLM 2100SP Self Propelled Lawn Mower are designed to handle these conditions with features like a brushless motor for gas like power and a self propelled system that helps maintain a steady pace.

This type of consistency is especially important during the first mow, where uneven cutting can impact how the lawn fills in throughout the season.

“Consistency is key on that first mow,” Wilk noted. “You want a mower that can handle those early season conditions without forcing you to overwork parts of the lawn.”

Dial in mowing height to support root development

Mower height plays a major role in how your lawn performs throughout the season. For many common cool season grasses, experts recommend maintaining a height between 2.5 to 4 inches, especially early in the season when the lawn is still establishing.

Keeping grass slightly taller helps retain moisture, encourage deeper root systems and improve the lawn’s ability to withstand heat and weeds over time. Wilk recommends erring on the taller side early in the season, allowing the lawn to build strength before gradually adjusting to a maintenance height.

Check battery charge and connections (for battery powered models): Ensuring a full charge and secure connection helps deliver consistent power throughout the mow

Check and top off engine oil (for gas powered mowers): Proper lubrication helps ensure smooth operation and prevents unnecessary wear

Clean or replace the air filter: A clogged filter can reduce engine efficiency and impact performance Inspect the deck and undercarriage: Built up grass or debris can affect airflow and cut quality* Test safety features and controls: Making sure everything is functioning properly before use helps avoid interruptions once you begin mowing

Taking a few minutes to address these basics helps ensure more consistent performance and a cleaner, healthier cut from the start.

Control the first mow and trim lawn edges

One of the most common early season mistakes is cutting too much at once. While overgrowth is normal coming out of winter, removing too much of the grass blade can shock

Time your mow and finish clean

Conditions on mowing day can directly impact results. Cutting wet grass often leads to clumping, uneven distribution and added strain on equipment, while also increasing the likelihood of soil compaction.

Waiting until the lawn is dry allows for a cleaner, more precise cut and helps maintain the integrity of both the grass and the mower. After mowing, using a blower like the DPB 2500 to clear clippings from driveways and sidewalks can help complete the job and maintain a polished look.

Start strong to simplify the season ahead

Taking a more intentional approach to the first mow creates long term advantages. By improving cut quality, reducing stress and using the right tools, homeowners can set their lawns up for more consistent growth and easier yard maintenance.

With the right preparation, that first mow becomes less about catching up after winter and more about setting the pace for a healthier, more resilient lawn all season long.

WHY 15 MINUTES OF PLAY COULD BE THE BEST GIFT YOU GIVE THIS YEAR

(BPT) Did you know that the average American spends over seven hours looking at a screen each day? It’s easy for people young and old to spend their downtime in the digital world instead of engaging with the people they love. Time that could be used to lay the foundation of a genuine connection between children, parents and grandparents is lost to endless scrolling.

What if just 15 minutes of your phone time could be used to strengthen relationships or provide a cure for boredom? If you’re tired of screens dominating family time, you can change the dynamic by bringing out an item that sparks laughter, connection and memories that last a lifetime: a game!

The power of play

Playing games including dice, cards and tabletop games as a family is a simple and entertaining experience that provides benefits that go beyond a single game session. In fact, a 2024 study published in the Family Relations journal found that games offer enjoyable family relaxation and foster emotional connections and communication across generations.

Reyn Guyer, the inventor of the iconic games Twister and Nerf, is no stranger to the power of play. His family is living proof of how playing games can bring family members together.

My family has played games together for decades, and we continue to pass down this tradition to each generation,” said Guyer. “It’s these moments of laughter, love and connection that have inspired me to bring these games into the homes of other families so they can also experience the joy of play.”

Maurna Donovan Crosby echoes her grandfather’s sentiment. She shared that her

most cherished childhood memories are of sitting at his kitchen table playing Rally Roll.

I remember barely knowing how to count, struggling to grasp the strategy, yet he’d gently guide me through each round. We played over and over again and those moments became the foundation of our relationship.”

If you’re overwhelmed by the thought of hosting a family game night every week, there’s good news. You don’t have to spend hours playing games for your family to reap the benefits of play. According to Guyer, all you need is 15 minutes.

How 15 minutes create a lifetime of connection

While at a diner, Guyer observed a mother and her two children enjoying a game together instead of being glued to their phones. That heartwarming moment ignited the spark for his creation of the 15 Minute Fun & Done series of games. These games are easy to learn, appropriate for most ages and guarantee giggle worthy memories in just 15 minutes.

This series of unique games includes Rally Roll (a Guyer family favorite), Rip Chip and Comeback. Each screen free game is specially crafted to foster real connection and joy in brief, engaging bursts of playtime, perfect for today’s busy families.

When creating these family dice games, Guyer applied his signature Three Rules of Engagement. Everyone’s involved, players are excited for each other’s turns and the games are always short and sweet.

“These aren’t just games; they’re engaging get togethers designed to transform life’s mini moments into something memorable,” Guyer said. “They’re quick, quirky and absolutely perfect for families who crave real laughter and genuine connection instead of the isolation of endless scrolling.”

A gift that can spark a family tradition

When time is short, connection matters. If you want to bring your family closer this year, try one (or all!) of these games and transform short windows of time into engaging moments of connection, laughter and lasting memories. (Feature Impact) From fully equipped outdoor kitchens to cozy lounge seating and thoughtfully designed landscaping, outdoor living upgrades have become some of the most sought after renovations for today’s homeowners. There’s one detail, though, that’s surprisingly often overlooked: heat.

Though backyards, patios and decks are increasingly expected to function as extensions of interior living spaces, rather than occasional warm weather escapes, nearly 92% of respondents in a survey of more than 2,000 homeowners conducted by Atomik Research on behalf of Bromic Heating, a global leader in premium infrared outdoor heating appliances, said their outdoor areas have untapped potential, suggesting it could play a bigger role in daily life than it does today.

Homeowners are prioritizing furniture, lighting and fire features when planning for their outdoor spaces, with just 23% of homeowners ranking outdoor heating as a top priority. Despite this, 67% of survey respondents confirmed heating would have the biggest impact on extending outdoor usage especially in the evenings when the sun sets and temperatures drop.

Many homeowners don’t think about outdoor heating until after their space is finished and they are left in the cold. To simplify the planning of outdoor living spaces and ensure invisible features like heating are considered as early as the visible elements, Bromic offers a complimentary design service alongside its best in class product portfolio that gives homeowners unmatched flexibility to create inspired spaces.

End to end support ensures an optimized layout, proper installation and alignment with your budget and design aesthetic. Whether classic or contemporary, built in and freestanding heating options are designed to complement the existing architecture and

provide performance that can extend memorable outdoor moments from season to season.

5 TIPS FOR GARDENING WITH KIDS

(Feature Impact) Gardening is a simple way to bring families together while simultaneously teaching kids hands on lessons about nature, responsibility and healthy living. Whether you have a backyard garden, a few containers on the patio or are looking for a starting point, getting your children involved in planting and caring for plants can spark curiosity and create lasting memories.

To get started, consider these family friendly tips:

1. Start Small

Begin with a manageable project, such as a few containers, a small garden bed or a single planter box. This helps keep the experience fun rather than overwhelming and allows children to see progress quickly.

2. Let Kids Choose the Plants

Giving your children a say in what goes into the garden can help build excitement and a sense of ownership. Ask them to pick a few colorful fruits, vegetables or flowers that grow quickly, such as sunflowers, cherry tomatoes, mint, sugar snap peas or marigolds.

3. Give Them Their Own Space

Kids feel proud when they have something that’s their own. Consider assigning each child a small plot, container or row in the garden. Let them be responsible for watering, planting and checking on their plants.

4. Use Kid Sized Tools

Little hands typically work best with tools designed just for them. Small watering cans, lightweight trowels and child sized gloves help kids participate safely and comfortably.

5. Encourage Creativity

Gardens don’t have to be all work. Add some fun to the process by adding artistic touches. Projects such as decorating pots, painting plant markers or creating a fairy or butterfly garden can keep imaginations engaged as well.

(Feature Impact) A parent’s love knows no limits. Across the globe, mothers and fathers do everything in their power to protect their children and give them the chance to grow up safe and strong. This year, celebrate that love with meaningful gifts that gives back.

Through UNICEF Market and Inspired Gifts, you can honor a mother, father or caregiver while helping the United Nations Children’s Fund deliver lifesaving support to children across 190 countries and territories from Lebanon to Gaza, Sudan and beyond. They represent tangible interventions that help deliver safe water, strengthen education systems, provide critical services and protect children from preventable diseases.

Lifesaving Nutrition

Invented 30 years ago, Ready to Use Therapeutic Food (RUTF) is a low cost, innovative option to treat child wasting. Each year, UNICEF delivers nearly 1 billion sachets of RUTF, reaching more than 9 million children across every continent: from the Pacific to the Sahel and South Asia to Latin America. Nine out of 10 children treated with RUTF make a full recovery, often within weeks. Gifting 150 Ready to Use Therapeutic Food Packets provides a child with a two month’s supply of RUTF.

For three decades, RUTF has helped save millions of children suffering from severe acute malnutrition around the world,” said UNICEF USA President and CEO, Michael J. Nyenhuis. As we mark this milestone, we celebrate the lives saved and the progress made and recommit to building a future where every child has access to the quality nutrition they need not only to survive, but to thrive.”

Maternal and Newborn Care

Support new moms with a gift that gives newborn babies a chance for a better start in

life. These Newborn Kits packages contain blankets, prenatal supplements for 20 new moms and essential vaccines to protect babies against measles, polio, diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis. In addition, the Mom and Baby Care bundle contains essential medications to assist with a smooth and safe delivery as well as newborn antibiotics aimed at helping reduce the risk of perinatal asphyxia, neonatal infections and prematurity.

Artisan Gifts

From a Peruvian made Adjustable Leather Sling Bag designed for versatility that also provides 112 packets of lifesaving nourishment to children around the world suffering from malnutrition to a handcrafted Talavera Style Vase from Mexico that provides 21 doses of measles vaccine, UNICEF Market artisan goods blend craftsmanship with purpose. Each purchase delivers lifesaving nutrition, vaccines and essential services for children around the world.

Partner Gifts

Children of the world are too often at risk, exposed to conflicts, diseases and natural disasters that threaten their safety and well being. Since 2016, Louis Vuitton has helped protect these children through its partnership with UNICEF, creating a dedicated Silver LockIt Collection in support of the organization’s work, and more than $24 million has been donated through this initiative.

In collaboration with House Ambassador and UNICEF Korea Goodwill Ambassador Felix, a new design is engraved with the word “DREAM,” representing every child’s right to grow, live and learn in a nurturing environment with access to education, health care and protection. For each piece purchased, a donation will be made to help deliver lifesaving assistance and education to children in urgent need around the world. Learn more at us.louisvuitton.com.

This year, celebrate mothers, fathers and caregivers with more than a gift. Celebrate them with an act of generosity through UNICEF Market and Inspired Gifts that transform gratitude into action and love into lifesaving impact. To dedicate a personalized gift in their honor, visit market.unicefusa.org.

TONY AWARD‑WINNER “APPROPRIATE” March 18 ‑ April 19, Olney Theatre, tickets $52 ‑ $96, Mulitz‑Gudelsky Theatre Lab. Branden Jacobs‑Jenkins’ searing satire of a family digging through their recently deceased patriarch’s crumbling estate is both gut‑splittingly funny and shocking in its confrontation of conveniently forgotten family history. DC‑luminaries Kimberly Gilbert (Angels in America) and Cody Nickell (Ink) star as siblings battling over the possession and meaning of their father’s dark patrimony. As the rest of the family descends on the ancestral property in rural Arkansas, old rivalries and grudges are eclipsed by the moral weight of what they find. Staged in our black box Mulitz‑Gudelsky Theatre Lab, this will be a unique staging of one of the most important American plays of the past 15 years.Due to the layout of the Mulitz‑Gudelsky Theatre Lab, late seating is at the discretion of the House Manager. Those exiting the theatre during the performance will not be re‑admitted while the performance is in progress.
