SMART WAYS TO SAVE MONEY ON SUMMER ROAD TRIPS

Summer road trips are one of the best ways to explore new destinations, spend quality time with family and friends, and create lasting memories. However, the costs of fuel, food, lodging, and attractions can quickly add up. With a little planning and a few smart strategies, you can enjoy an unforgettable vacation without overspending.

Plan Your Route Ahead of Time

Before you hit the road, map out your route and identify the most efficient path to your destination. Avoid unnecessary detours and traffic heavy areas that can waste fuel. Navigation apps can help you find alternate routes, estimate travel times, and locate affordable gas stations along the way.

Save Money on Fuel

Gas is often one of the biggest expenses during a road trip. You can reduce fuel costs by keeping your tires properly inflated, removing unnecessary weight from your vehicle, driving at steady speeds, avoiding rapid acceleration, and using cruise control on highways when appropriate. Filling up in smaller towns where gas prices are often lower than in major tourist areas can also help you save. Many gas station rewards programs and fuel discount apps can further reduce your costs by saving you a few cents per gallon throughout your trip.

Perform Basic Vehicle Maintenance

A well maintained vehicle is more fuel efficient and less likely to experience expensive breakdowns. Before leaving, check your engine oil, tire pressure and tread, coolant levels, windshield washer fluid, brakes, and battery condition. Taking care of these items before your trip can help prevent costly repairs and improve fuel economy.

Pack Your Own Snacks and Drinks

Frequent stops at convenience stores and fast food restaurants can significantly increase travel expenses. Pack a cooler with sandwiches, fresh fruit, granola bars, trail mix, bottled water, and reusable drink containers. Preparing your

own meals for even part of the trip can save hundreds of dollars on longer vacations.

Choose Affordable Accommodations

Hotels in popular tourist areas often charge premium rates during summer. Consider booking hotels several weeks in advance, staying just outside major cities, choosing vacation rentals, or looking into campgrounds and state parks with cabins. Travel booking websites can help compare prices and find last minute discounts.

Look for Free Attractions

Not every memorable vacation experience requires an admission ticket. Many destinations offer public beaches, scenic overlooks, hiking trails, local festivals, historic downtown districts, community concerts, and national and state parks. Research free activities before arriving at each destination so you can enjoy more without spending more.

Travel During Off Peak Times

Leaving early in the morning or traveling on weekdays can reduce traffic and sometimes lower lodging costs. If your schedule is flexible, avoiding holiday weekends can also lead to significant savings.

Use Rewards Programs

Take advantage of loyalty programs for hotels, gas stations, credit cards, and restaurants. Many travel rewards programs offer discounts, cash back, or points that can offset vacation expenses.

Set a Daily Budget

Determine how much you want to spend each day on fuel, meals, lodging, entertainment, and souvenirs. Tracking your spending helps prevent unexpected costs and keeps your vacation within budget.

Limit Impulse Purchases

Tourist shops often feature overpriced souvenirs. Instead of buying expensive keepsakes everywhere you stop, consider taking photos, collecting postcards, or purchasing one meaningful item from each destination.

A memorable summer road trip doesn’t have to come with a hefty price tag. By planning ahead, maintaining your vehicle, packing food, finding affordable lodging, and taking advantage of free attractions, you can stretch your travel budget while enjoying everything the open road has to offer. Smart preparation allows you to focus less on expenses and more on making lasting memories with the people who matter most.

showcasing farming achievements. Farmers display their best crops, fruits, vegetables, and livestock, while competitions reward excellence in agriculture. These fairs also educate the public about farming, animal care, and sustainable practices. Agricultural fairs have their roots in the early 19th century and were created to promote better farming methods and community learning.

Fairs also support local businesses and artisans. Small business owners, craftsmen, and artists display and sell handmade products, artwork, clothing, and other unique items.

In addition to entertainment and shopping, fairs strengthen community bonds. Families and friends gather to spend quality time together, participate in competitions, and celebrate local traditions. Cultural fairs help preserve customs, music, dance, and food, allowing younger generations to appreciate their heritage.

In conclusion, fairs are more than just places for fun and amusement. They promote education, culture, business, and community spirit. By bringing people together in a joyful environment, fairs continue to be an important part of society and a cherished tradition around the world.

Your roof is one of the most important parts of your home, providing protection from rain, wind, snow, and extreme temperatures. Despite its importance, it is often overlooked until a problem arises. Regular roof maintenance can help extend the life of your roof, prevent costly repairs, and protect your home’s overall value.

Why Roof Maintenance Matters

A well maintained roof acts as the first line of defense against the elements. Over time, weather conditions, falling debris, and natural aging can cause shingles to crack, flashing to loosen, and gutters to become clogged. If left unaddressed, these small issues can lead to leaks, water damage, mold growth, and structural problems. Routine maintenance allows homeowners to identify and fix minor issues before they become major expenses.

Essential Roof Maintenance Tips

1. Inspect Your Roof Regularly

Perform a visual inspection at least twice a year, ideally in the spring and fall. Look for:

• Missing or damaged shingles

• Cracked or curled roofing materials

• Loose flashing around chimneys and vents

• Signs of moss or algae growth

2. Clean Gutters and Downspouts

Clogged gutters can cause water to back up onto the roof, increasing the risk of leaks and water damage. Keep gutters free of leaves, twigs, and other debris to ensure proper drainage.

CAMPING & OUTDOOR EQUIPMENT

18’X30’ White Shade / Rain Canopy, (8), with grommets, steel frame not included, $45 each or bulk discount, 443‑538‑7934.

3. Remove Debris

Branches, leaves, and other debris can trap moisture on the roof surface. Regularly clearing debris helps prevent rot and extends the lifespan of roofing materials.

4. Trim Overhanging Trees

Tree branches hanging over your roof can scrape shingles, drop debris, and increase the risk of damage during storms. Keeping branches trimmed also discourages pests from accessing your roof.

5. Check for Water Damage

Inspect your attic for signs of leaks, such as water stains, mold, or damp insulation. Early detection can prevent more extensive damage to your home’s structure.

6. Schedule Professional Inspections

While homeowners can perform basic visual checks, a professional roofing contractor can identify hidden issues that may not be visible from the ground. An annual inspection is a worthwhile investment, especially after severe weather.

Consistent roof maintenance offers several advantages:

• Extends the lifespan of your roof

• Reduces the likelihood of expensive repairs

• Improves your home’s energy efficiency

• Helps maintain property value

• Prevents leaks and interior water damage

• Provides peace of mind during severe weather

Roof maintenance is an essential part of responsible homeownership. By conducting regular inspections, keeping the roof clean, maintaining gutters, and addressing small issues promptly, homeowners can avoid costly repairs and ensure their roof remains in excellent condition for many years. Investing a little time and effort in routine maintenance today can save thousands of dollars in future repair or replacement costs while keeping your home safe and protected.

Beautiful landscapes can do more than enhance curb appeal—they can support local wildlife, improve the environment, and create outdoor spaces that thrive for years. That’s the mission behind Lauren’s Garden Service and Cultivate Garden & Goods, two complementary businesses owned by horticulturist Lauren Turner.

Every project is designed with sustainability in mind, using native plants and environmentally responsible practices to create healthy, low maintenance landscapes that attract pollinators, birds, and beneficial insects.

The company’s dedication to quality has earned community recognition, including Best of Howard County – Landscaper and Honorable Mention for Howard County Garden Center. These awards reflect the trust Lauren and her team have built by helping homeowners create outdoor spaces that are both beautiful and environmentally friendly.

In addition to professional landscaping services, Lauren’s Garden Service operates a Native Plant Nursery offering a wide variety of trees, shrubs, and perennials selected to thrive in Maryland’s climate. Whether customers are creating a pollinator garden, replacing invasive plants, or simply looking for expert advice, the knowledgeable staff provides guidance to help every garden succeed.

RAISING QUALITY FROM THE GROUND UP

For generations, Snader Farms Beef has been dedicated to producing high quality, locally raised beef while preserving the agricultural traditions that have long defined Howard County. Built on a commitment to responsible farming, animal care, and exceptional flavor, the family owned farm offers consumers the opportunity to know exactly where their food comes from—and the people who raise it.

At Snader Farms, quality begins in the pasture. The cattle are carefully raised with a focus on proper nutrition, low stress handling, and attentive care from start to finish. This hands on approach results in flavorful, tender beef that families can feel good about serving at the dinner table. From everyday ground beef and steaks to roasts and specialty cuts, every package reflects the farm’s dedication to excellence.

Buying directly from Snader Farms also means supporting local agriculture and strengthening the connection between farmers and consumers. Instead of traveling hundreds—or even thousands—of miles, the beef is raised close to home, helping reduce transportation while supporting Maryland’s farming community. Customers appreciate not only the freshness of the product but also the opportunity to ask questions and learn more about how their food is produced.

Whether you’re planning a backyard cookout, preparing a holiday feast, or stocking the freezer with locally raised beef, Snader Farms offers a variety of options to fit every household. Many customers choose to purchase individual cuts, while others take advantage of bulk freezer packages that provide excellent value throughout the year.

Beyond producing exceptional beef, Snader Farms represents something increasingly important in today’s food system: trust. Knowing the family behind your food creates a connection that’s difficult to find in the grocery store aisle.

From pasture to plate, Snader Farms Beef continues to demonstrate that great meals begin with great farming. It’s a delicious reminder that when you support local agriculture, you’re not only enjoying outstanding beef—you’re helping preserve the farms, families, and traditions that make Howard County such a special place to call home.

WATER HEATER MAINTENANCE AND REPLACEMENT

A water heater is one of the hardest working appliances in your home, providing hot water for showers, laundry, cooking, and cleaning. With regular maintenance, a typical water heater can last 8–15 years, depending on the type, water quality, and how well it is maintained. Knowing when to service your unit—and when it’s time to replace it—can help you avoid unexpected breakdowns and costly repairs.

Why Water Heater Maintenance Matters

Routine maintenance offers several benefits:

• Improves energy efficiency

• Extends the lifespan of the unit

• Reduces the risk of leaks and water damage

• Maintains consistent hot water performance

• Helps identify minor issues before they become major problems

Neglecting maintenance can lead to sediment buildup, corrosion, reduced heating efficiency, and premature failure.

Essential Water Heater Maintenance Tips

Flush the Tank Annually

Over time, minerals and sediment settle at the bottom of tank style water heaters. This buildup forces the heater to work harder and

can reduce heating efficiency. Homes with hard water may benefit from flushing every six months.

2. Inspect the Anode Rod

The anode rod is designed to attract corrosion and protect the inside of the tank. Replacing an inexpensive anode rod can add years to your water heater’s life.

3. Test the Temperature and Pressure (T&P) Relief Valve

The T&P valve is a critical safety device that releases excess pressure. If it doesn’t operate correctly, it should be replaced promptly.

4. Check the Temperature Setting

Most manufacturers recommend setting the thermostat to 120°F (49°C).

5. Inspect for Leaks and Corrosion

Small leaks can quickly become major water damage if ignored.

6. Insulate Pipes and Older Tanks

Adding insulation to exposed hot water pipes—and to older, non insulated tanks—can reduce heat loss and improve efficiency.

Routine maintenance is the most effective way to maximize the life and efficiency of your water heater. Simple tasks like flushing the tank, checking for leaks, and inspecting the anode rod can help prevent expensive repairs and extend the unit’s service life. When your water heater begins showing signs of age, corrosion, or declining performance, replacing it with a modern, energy efficient model can improve reliability, lower utility bills, and provide dependable hot water for years to come.

As the costs of wining and dining out continue to increase, home entertaining is enjoying a dramatic revival, evolving to become an art form or status symbol in its own right. The appeal of gathering in your own home is that a party is no longer just a party, but a creative expression of your personal taste and interests. Going beyond inviting friends over for a simple meal, many hosts aspire to create a unique, unforgettable experience.

Tap into these recent trends to wow guests at your next get together.

The exclusive allure of the speakeasy

The 1920s have resurged with the growing appeal of the Prohibition era “speakeasy,” a secret lounge where select guests could enjoy prohibited alcohol in a swanky atmosphere highlighting jazz music, glamorous fashion and Art Deco vibes.

To create your own home speakeasy, you need a few crucial elements: A secret or hidden entrance where guests need to know the password to enter, a moody atmosphere featuring dark colors and textures like velvet and leather, swanky costumes reminiscent of the roaring ‘20s and sophisticated cocktails and/ or mocktails.

Whether you go all in for a speakeasy room renovation or just rent (or make) decor to fit the theme, make sure your guests have everything they need for full participation. Your invitation should include a dress code (with a limited color palette like black and white or black and gold, for example), clues for finding the hidden entrance (perhaps a side door or garage) and of course, the all important password.

Cozy up to the listening bar

Similar to the speakeasy trend, the listening bar is a celebration of times gone by, inspired by Japanese “hi fi lounges.” They pay tribute to

genres of music like jazz, soul, funk, blues and more. Rather than making alcohol the focus, listening bars feature vintage vinyl, old school stereo consoles and pure enjoyment of music as central to the social occasion.

Have a collection of LPs you’d like to share with friends? Invite them over for a listening bar experience. Make sure you have good quality speakers, moody ambient lighting and comfortable seating, along with a drink cart or two.

The beauty of a listening bar is that you can choose whatever kind of music you want to feature, whether that’s late ‘50s rat pack, early ‘60s lounge music, ‘70s easy listening make it your own! You can even start with one era or genre and morph into a different mood as the evening goes on.

It’s all fun and games

Board games are back, in a big way, and not just for family game night. Millennials and Gen Z are embracing throwback gaming nights with friends as an alternative to the bar scene, according to the New York Times. And the variety of ways to play games with friends offers something for everyone, from standard board games to chess, Mahjongg, murder mystery parties, escape room puzzle solving and classic role playing games like Dungeons and Dragons.

Not sure which games will most appeal to your friends? Consider setting up a few different rooms or zones for variety, so guests can try more than one type of game during the night.

Bring music performances home

Tired of crowded venues and pricey concert tickets? The alternative is to bring live music (or an entertaining DJ) into your home for a house concert. This trend celebrates a more intimate experience of music that still offers the fun and energy of going to a live performance.

Wherever you live, there are bound to be gigging musicians looking for opportunities to perform. Make sure to agree on the fee and timeframe ahead of the event. Ask what they need in terms of space (indoors or out) and access to electrical power. You can then invite guests and set a cover charge for the event to help cover the cost, if needed.

It’s clear that home entertaining is constantly evolving, and these recent trends can make your next gathering a night to remember.

DISCOVER MARY’S LAND FARM

Nestled among the rolling hills of Ellicott City, Maryland, Mary’s Land Farm is much more than a place to buy fresh vegetables or spend an afternoon outdoors—it’s a destination where agriculture, education, and family fun come together. Spanning 160 acres, the farm has grown into one of Howard County’s premier agritourism attractions while remaining committed to regenerative farming and responsible land stewardship. The Cunningham family purchased the property in 2014 with a vision of creating a thriving ecosystem that goes beyond traditional organic farming, focusing on healthy soil, ethically raised livestock, and sustainable practices.

Visitors quickly discover there’s always something happening. The farm store is stocked with 100% grass fed beef, pasture raised pork, chicken, lamb, farm fresh eggs, seasonal produce, artisan olive oils, handcrafted gifts, and locally made products. It’s the perfect place to fill a shopping basket with ingredients for a truly farm to table meal.

Beyond the market, Mary’s Land Farm offers experiences that appeal to every age. Families can meet friendly farm animals, explore walking trails, enjoy seasonal festivals, attend cooking classes, participate in educational workshops, or bring children for field trips and summer camps. Throughout the year, popular events such as sunflower celebrations, pumpkin festivities, farmers markets, and holiday activities transform the farm into a lively gathering place for the community.

Looking for a unique getaway? Guests can even spend the night at the beautifully restored 19th century farmhouse inn, waking up to peaceful countryside views and a farm fresh breakfast made with ingredients harvested just steps away.

Perhaps the greatest lesson Mary’s Land Farm teaches is that farming isn’t simply about growing food—it’s about cultivating connections. Whether you’re shopping for fresh ingredients, attending a workshop, relaxing at the inn, or simply watching the animals graze across the pastures, every visit offers a reminder that healthy land, healthy food, and a strong community all grow together.

EASY SUMMER SNACKS TO FUEL KIDS’ BIG ADVENTURES

For families with young children, summer can feel like one nonstop adventure. From beach days and park visits to playdates, camps and road trips, the season is packed with moments that keep kids moving. Along the way, parents need snacks that are convenient, easy to pack, parent approved and, most importantly, something kids will actually enjoy while fueling themselves for the next adventure.

Coming up with good options can be a challenge, especially for parents of opinionated preschoolers. While nearly 30% of parents are searching for better for you snack alternatives, only 38% report high satisfaction with the current options.

If that sounds familiar, a little planning can go a long way. Here are a few simple, on the go snacking tips from Goodies, a new snack brand for preschoolers, to help make busy summer days easier.

Give kids choices, without overwhelming them

Preschool aged children like to have

autonomy, but can also feel overwhelmed by too many decisions. Keep it simple by offering a few parent approved options so whatever they choose works for you.

Consider creating a special snack drawer, box or spot in the fridge that kids know they can choose from when they’re at home, or when they’re packing their own backpacks for camps, trips and other outings.

Keep them portable

Stick with snack items that can be easily packed, carried and yes, eaten in the car when you’re hurrying from one activity to another. Consider the mess factor also is this something that could create too many crumbs or spills?

You’ll give kids more of a sense of autonomy by offering them individually portioned snacks like small applesauce pouches, or crackers or pretzels that you can easily divide into baggies or reusable containers. It’s also convenient to include snacks that come in their own natural packaging, like clementines and bananas.

Excite kids with variety

Keep snack time exciting by offering a mix of wholesome snacks in different flavors and textures from sweet and salty to smooth, creamy, chewy and crunchy. Pairing options like Goodies with favorites such as fresh fruit, applesauce or yogurt helps keep things fun and encourages kids to explore what they love.

By offering practical, portable snacks and giving kids a little room to choose, parents can help keep kids fueled for wherever summer takes them.

FREE KINGSLEY SCHOOLHOUSE TOURS IN CLARKSBURG Join us on the first Sunday of each month, 1-4pm, through October for free tours of the historic one-room Kingsley Schoolhouse. Built in 1893 in response to the need for a school within walking distance of farms located in the Little Bennett Creek Valley, the Kingsley Schoolhouse served the local, rural farming community until it closed in 1935. Each year, around 20 children ranging in age from 6-12 years old attended the school. Since the immediate area was known locally as Froggy Hollow, due to the large number of frogs that could be heard peeping in the low-lying area, the school acquired the nickname of Froggy Hollow School. Join us for the best chicken dinner ever, outdoor family fun, and ride the Woodstock Express! FRATINO & MATISSE: TO SEE THIS LIGHT AGAIN Two generations. One electric conversation. Contemporary painter Louis Fratino enters into a vibrant dialogue with modern master Henri Matisse in Fratino and Matisse: To See This Light Again. Born in Annapolis and trained at the Maryland Institute College of Art, Fratino spent years studying the Baltimore Museum of Art’s expansive Matisse collection. This influence shines through in his luminous interiors, sensual color, and intimate portrayals of the male figure. This striking exhibition brings Fratino’s paintings together with masterworks by Matisse including figures, interiors, still lifes, and self-portraits. Side by side, their works ignite a dynamic exchange about color, light, pattern, and the emotional power of painting. Baltimore Museum of Art, through September 6. Learn more at artbma.org.
