FREDERICK COUNTY AGRICULTURE PRESENTS A COMMITMENT TO COMMUNITY

Agriculture has always been at the heart of Frederick County—it shapes our history, fuels our economy, feeds our community, and defines our way of life. From family farms carefully passed down through generations to innovative new operations embracing modern techniques and markets, agriculture here is more than a business; it is a deep-rooted commitment to sustaining our local economy, nourishing our neighbors and preserving the rural character that makes Frederick County so special.

To help ensure that this legacy not only endures but continues to grow, the Frederick County Office of Agriculture launched the 2025 Frederick County Agricultural Strategic Plan. This forward-thinking plan was developed with direct input from more than 100 members of our local agricultural community—their insight has guided a strategy focused on strengthening local food systems,

supporting farm viability, expanding market opportunities and reinforcing agriculture’s role as both an economic engine and a reliable source of fresh, local food. We are now actively implementing this plan, turning shared priorities into meaningful action that supports those who work every day to keep our farms productive and our community fed.

This year also provides a meaningful opportunity to recognize the essential contributions of women in agriculture as part of the International Year of the Woman Farmer. In Frederick County, women represent 40 percent of our agricultural operators, bringing leadership, innovation and resilience to farms of all sizes and types. Their role is vital to ensure agriculture remains strong, adaptive and forward-looking.

Agriculture continues to be a powerful force in Frederick County, with the most

recent data showing an economic impact of $1.14 billion. At the same time, we remain deeply committed to preserving the land that makes this success possible.

Through our robust Agricultural Preservation Program, nearly 78,000 acres have been permanently protected, putting us well on our way to achieving our goal of 160,000 preserved acres by 2051. These efforts safeguard not only farmland, but also the future of local food production and economic sustainability.

This spring, we were proud to launch the new Forever Farmland signage program, a visible symbol of our community’s dedication to protecting agriculture. As you travel throughout the county, I encourage you to look for these signs representing the farms, families and hard work that continue to fuel our economy and feed our community every day.

Together, through thoughtful planning, strong partnerships and a shared commitment to agriculture, Frederick County is cultivating a future where farming remains vibrant, resilient and central to who we are.

F

or generations, women involved in farming and ranching have often been celebrated as the farmer’s wife, farmer’s daughter or the partner behind the scenes. But today, women are taking on more prominent roles in agriculture, owning their own operations.

At the May 2024 United Nations General Assembly, the United States introduced a resolution declaring 2026 as the International Year of the Woman Farmer with 123 countries serving as co-sponsors. This marked a global commitment to empowering and recognizing the contributions of women in agriculture.

As one of the leading agricultural counties in the state, Frederick County farm women continue to make an impact whether it’s milking cows, growing produce, agritourism, flower production, raising livestock, producing crops and much more.

According to a 2022 USDA report, the U.S. had 1.2 million female producers, about 36 percent of the country’s farmers. Women play a vital role in American agriculture —contributing through production, advocacy, education, and entrepreneurship, while also strengthening rural communities through leadership and outreach.

Although farming operations can be taxing, probably no farming enterprise is as demanding as dairy farming, a 24/7 commitment. Just ask Jessica Valentine of Thurmont. “You can’t miss a day milking cows,” she says.

She and her husband, Mark, both come from an agricultural background. While he works off the farm as a professional cattle hoof trimmer, she manages the family’s dairy operation near Emmitsburg that they rent. Jessica handles the twice daily milkings with help from her

“My family has always been deeply involved in agriculture,” Valentine says. “My grandparents all farmed, my parents ran a few beef cattle, until my brother and sister wanted to show. We showed cattle, sheep and horses. I met my husband in 4-H.” Valentine believes it’s an honor for the United Nations to celebrate women farmers. “We are no longer the farmer’s wife, we

The Valentines juggle responsibilities to make sure all chores are completed daily like feeding calves, milking, feeding heifers, record keeping, monitoring the dairy herd’s reproductive health, field work and newborn calves. Valentine enjoys milking their 65 head of Ayrshire cattle. They also board several other cows for friends.

In addition to daily chores, the Valentines enjoy exhibiting their Ayrshire cattle on the local, state and national levels. Her love for Ayrshire cattle and farming inspired Valentine to get involved in the state and national cattle organizations where she holds offices in both groups. Since 2017 she has chaired the National Ayrshire Association Youth Committee.

She’s also the Maryland Ayrshire Association Youth leader and previously served as vice president.

Although farming can be challenging and exhausting, Valentine says she draws her inspiration from other dairy women. “On the days I’m struggling, I

know I’m not alone,” she says.

“I’m part of something so much bigger and that’s what I can draw strength from knowing someone else has been in this situation and has figured it out or powered through.

“My passion for dairy farming is family. Be it cow families, where I love to watch the next generation develop and improve or knowing that these lines have been selectively developed for generations. Or my family, I think there is no better way than to raise children with a work ethic, respect for each other and the ability to appreciate the important things and also the little things,” she says.

Like Jessica Valentine, women involved in agriculture are making a powerful impact in the United States and around the world. Women now farm or cofarm 43 percent of U.S. farmland and bring a strong commitment to conservation, sustainability, generational family, resilience and community involvement.

Women in many countries face barriers and challenges with farming, but there are special programs and grants that continue to be researched and developed to empower women landowners and farmers with knowledge, networks and resources they need to steward their land sustainably and productively.

a woman farmer, continuing her family’s legacy. As a fifth-generation farmer, House grew up learning about farming from her parents and grandparents on Gaver Farms. Her four children now represent the sixth generation involved in the family business.

“I grew up working on my family’s farm which was dairy, crop, and a Christmas tree farm,” she says. “We expanded the business and diversified to include agritourism, pumpkin, apple and sunflower picking, value-added foods and a farm market.”

Gaver Farm hosts an annual Fall Fun Fest complete with corn maze, farm animals, playgrounds and games where families can visit to pick crops, learn about agriculture on a working farm and enjoy hayrides and farm fresh food. Gaver Farm is open to the public August through December. The family also grows traditional row crops of corn, soybeans and hay.

House believes the best place to raise her children is on the family farm. “I enjoy the flexibility, the fact that every day is different, and I can do my job with my kids learning and working beside and around me,” she says. “I love being part of a local business and supporting community and growing things.”

While family members share the workload, House says the most challenging aspect of their operation is time and job management.

“It’s important to prioritize tasks and be sure jobs are completed efficiently and using best farm practices,” she says. “Chores often depend on the time of year. Daily chores include animal care and general farm management.”

House also credits her mother, Lisa, with instilling a deep love for agriculture in her. “I admire my mother’s willingness to make changes and take risks on new ideas. What inspires me most about farming is seeing change/improvements we make on the farm be successful.”

Melissa Aellen can also point to a family heritage in agriculture, taking time, however, to leave Linganore Winecellars in Mount Airy to gain an education at Cornell University, as well as working a string of internships that took her from Napa Valley in California to New York’s Finger Lakes, Kentucky, Oregon and Illinois. “I also worked a harvest in New

Zealand,” she says, before returning to the family business full time in 2017, representing the third generation of vintners.

Aellen is director of winery operations for Linganore and Simple Theory Wine Co., a lounge that features wine and accompanying noshes at 37 N. Market St., a venture she and her cousin, Parker Aellen, started last year.

Linganore Winecellars is observing a half century in business this year, celebrating the first vines planted by Aellen’s grandparents, Jack and Lucille.

Aellen credits her grandmother, who is 95, for steering her in her career.

“As a kid,” she says, she was fascinated by her father’s secretary and the work she did, “and I figured that would be my pathway,” although “no one said I couldn’t” be a wine producer, it just wasn’t something many women did at the time. Then, Lucille showed her a magazine cover featuring Gina Gallo, who runs her family’s California vineyard.

“I thought, whoa, I can be a winemaker,” Aellen says.

Pointing to the fact that Maryland has 100 wineries, with less than 10 being run by women, she nonetheless says, “I never felt it was an adverse situation” to be a female in that world. “Growing up in the industry—I was exposed to it since I was 7 years old—gave me an advantage.”

As to the physical labor and conditions involved in her job, the planting, heavy lifting and constantly getting dirty, Aellen takes it in stride. “Chivalry is fine when you’re pulling out a chair at the table,

The variety of tasks keeps the days interesting, she says. “I could be behind my computer, and the next hour down in the barrel cellar.” The work is full of challenges, whether it’s facing the aftermath of a late frost or climate change that has them planting varieties that will adjust to new conditions.

“We are stewards of the land,” she says, and that

includes “dry farming” where mowing the vineyard is minimized to promote a biodiverse ecosystem. They also favor solar power, recycling and using bottles made of less glass, which also reduces shipping costs.

Aellen exudes an excitement for the future of wine production, and that includes the belief that women will have an increasing role. “Women have better pallets,” she says with a smile, all the better for tasting, and she’s seeing operations where “they’re not afraid to hire the first woman.”

Thurmont’s Catoctin Mountain Orchard is like a beacon along U.S. 15, prompting motorists to turn into the parking lot to visit the market and load up on apples, peaches, berries, canned preserves, plus fixings for a salad. If there’s time, customers may even pick their own blueberries and cut flowers for a bouquet.

Owner Bob Black is nationally known for his talent in producing stellar apples and has the awards to show for it. He also has proof of his ability to mentor a new generation of farmers in his granddaughter Katlyn Marshall.

Marshall is the farm and marketing manager on the land she has traversed ever since learning to walk. “This was my day care center,” she says, where she realized that farming was what she wanted for her future. As a child, Marshall had her own set of chores, such as being on bird patrol, all while absorbing lessons from her grandfather. “I’m still learning every day from him.”

One important piece of advice is diversification, she says, something driven home hard this spring when a late frost took out 90 percent of the apple crop, and 25 percent of the peaches. “I looked at 10 trees and only saw one apple,” she says.

The operation still has berries, vegetables and cut flowers, plus the market has listened to requests from customers to stock products such as meat, cheese and milk, all of which helps the bottom line.

Just that day, one with plenty of sunshine and temperatures in the 70s, she addressed pest management in the rows of fruit trees, as well as working up some ground for additional vegetables. She also popped into the store for various reasons.

“I wish I could wear more hats,” she says with a smile. “I want to share my knowledge.” This includes telling consumers about farming life. “It’s a gamble being a farmer. Every year is a toss-up,” she says, whether it’s an economy with high gas prices, a sudden hailstorm or land slowly drying from drought.

Marshall says she especially wants to be of help to other women farmers.

Landscaping Grows into

BIG BUSINESS

F

aced with demanding careers and busy lifestyles, more homeowners these days are opting to purchase from local nurseries or hire landscaping companies to beautify their homes, resulting in a multi-million-dollar industry.

It’s also what Laura Hagmann, sales and shipping manager for Waverly Farm, calls “a joyful industry” whether it is workers enjoying being outside in nature, or customers “you know are going to be happy.”

Waverly Farm, 1931 Greenville Road, Adamstown, is owned by Jerry Faulring, who grew up on a western New York dairy farm, followed by a five-state lawn and landscaping business. In 1996 he started Waverly Farm, which wholesales trees and shrubs to other wholesalers and directly to landscapers.

“They are fully finished, landscape ready,” Hagmann says of their stock. “Everything is in the ground. We dig to order.”

Faulring landed on the 200-acre site after an extensive search, recognizing its high-quality soil. The company does its best to protect what it has, reserving nearly 50 acres for grass aisles to prevent soil erosion. One of its business practices includes “respecting nature and our land.”

A source for individuals seeking flowers and other vegetation to beautify their homes is Thanksgiving Farms of Adamstown, which has been providing a large selection of plants for years.

“Thanksgiving Farms appeared in 1984 as a family-run vegetable farm,” says Darby Zimmermann. “As time progressed so did our offerings. We added greenhouses so we could sell plants. One greenhouse grew into 22. We grow a large assortment of annuals, perennials, herbs hanging baskets, vegetable plants, shrubs, tropical and houseplants.”

They also offer a landscaping service and strive to provide gardening essentials like fertilizers, pottery, seeds, soils and amendments. Melanie Zimmermann is the go-to expert when it comes to landscaping.

“She offers a hands-on approach where she visits the customer’s yard, makes recom-

mendations, and then has the customer come to the farm to look at the suggested selections,” Darby says. “All of Melanie’s customers are happy due to her diligent research, designs and selections. Usually, she does these projects in the spring and again in the fall.

“Maryland is an excellent part of the country to grow all Mid-Atlantic zone annuals perennials, herbs, vegetable plants and shrubs. Our annual selection is out of this world,” Darby says. “Petunias alone, we offer 40 varieties, perennials around 75 varieties and lots of herb varieties.”

After 42 years in business, the Zimmermanns still have a few hurdles. “Our greatest challenges are watering all these plants, maintaining equipment so we can farm, keeping up with all the new laws and regulations, and making sure the dayto-day operations goes smoothly,” Darby says.

“Like, is the internet up and is the electric on?”

Although they’ve had hiccups along the way, they are grateful for their loyal customers. “We love getting into the soil, growing plants and working within the family business,” Darby says. “We love

our customers who truly appreciate us and our farm. Our motto is, ‘We grow our own,’ and everyone truly loves our products.”

A company that offers extensive landscaping creations is Outdoor Solutions, a premier outdoor living contractor. They have been in the community since 1989. “As a Barrick Company, it builds on decades of experience delivering high-quality craftsmanship and innovative design across Maryland,” says owner Nicholas Toms.

Toms joined the company in 2004 as a landscape construction laborer and worked his way up through the ranks—foreman, sales manager and vice president, before becoming the owner.

“Outdoor Solutions specializes in complete outdoor environments, including hardscapes, landscapes, fiberglass pools, retaining walls, patios, outdoor kitchens, lighting and custom structures,” Toms says. “We are a full-service contractor. We both design and install landscaping and outdoor living projects.”

While Outdoor Solutions does not grow plants directly, their sister company, Barrick Garden Center, stocks a full selection of regionally appropriate material.

“This includes shade and ornamental trees, evergreens and screening, shrubs, perennials, grasses and seasonal flowers,” Toms says. “We’re a landscape construction family at heart—we enjoy working outdoors and partnering with great local clients to bring their dream outdoor spaces to life.”

A well-planted and designed landscape can increase a home’s value between 5.5 percent to 12.7 percent, according to recent data, noting that in just the last decade, the number of landscaping businesses grew 39 percent.

“From design through installation, it’s a rewarding and energizing process,” Toms says.

s agriculture demographics shift across Frederick County, farms once driven past without a second thought are now becoming date spots, family outings and places to find and make homemade gifts. It’s all thanks to agritourism, the practice of integrating tourist experiences with a running farm. More than a financial necessity in shifting economic times, it’s a way

for farmers to integrate themselves into their community, creating a memorable destination.

Agritourism became popular in the early 1990s, according to Katie Stevens, director of the Frederick County Office of Agriculture. “It started more with the fall festivals, pick your own pumpkins, and continued to grow from that point really.” The practice adds financial value and allows visitors to not only become an active participant in their experience, but to learn about agriculture. “The general public wants to know where their food comes from. They want to get out on farms and enjoy farm life,” she says.

Summers Farm, in the Middletown Valley, was a part of the early wave, and a prototypical example of agritourism. The family-owned operation sells corn, wheat, soybeans and a hay crop, and after selling their dairy cows in the early ‘90s, owner Teresa Summers was inspired to fill the gap, seeing how others were integrating

Summers Farm re-opened in 1996 with that as a part of their business.

“We are a working farm first and foremost, and that’s what we do here, but we open up seasonally in the fall.” Open to the public from August through October, they begin with pick your own flowers and an apple orchard and then shift over to pumpkin picking as Halloween approaches.

Dreamland Christmas Tree farm, also in the Middletown Valley, fell into the enterprise even before their farm opened. Brian Riesett believes every good Christmas tree farm needs to have a shop, and when he and his wife, Dawn, bought the property, an antique barn nearly 200 years old was already on the property. The barn was converted by the Riesetts into a Christmas shop, filled with trinkets and treasures.

“We planted our first trees in ‘04,” says Riesett. “So as those trees were growing, I spent time chipping away at fixing the barn

up and making it safe for people to go in there. When we did sell our first trees (around 2012) the barn was at that point open and ready to go.” As to finding a balance, the Riesetts split the labor down the middle—Brian runs the farm, and Dawn runs the shop.

A unique hook can go a long way to ingrain yourself in a customer’s mind.

their antique barn helps them stand out among the competition. “The barn’s about 20 percent of the revenue,” Riesett says. “The things in there are much cheaper (than the trees) but without the barn, the business wouldn’t be anywhere near where it is right now.”

Blue Dreams USA, located in the Linganore area, is centered around three core plants—the rose, known for its beauty; lavender, known as “blue gold,” due to its many uses; and tea, the second most consumed drink in the world.

In addition to rose gardens and a mini forest, owners Imelda Roberts and Jeff Snively run a boutique store with products based around those three plants. The shop is open from noon to 3 p.m. on the weekends, and then from 3 p.m.-6 p.m., they operate a tea garden, by appointment only. Running one facet at a time helps them put all of their energy into the activity in front of them.

activities and doing reservations,” says Roberts. “It is a smart way (to operate) because then you’re able to manage inventory. You only prepare afternoon tea for those people who reserve.”

Lauren Rohwer has owned Hilltop Blooms and Beef, a 50-acre farm in Ijamsville, since 2018. The farm sells beef, and regularly delivers flowers to local restaurants, or even door-to-door, “kind of like the milkman,” Rohwer jokes. “I leave fresh jars of flowers and then I get the old ones back. The customers leave them on the front porch for me.”

When it comes to agritourism, the business takes the idea of appointments further, with ticketed workshops containing anywhere from six to 16 people.

“They’re invited to the farm; they are given a tour so I can show them all around.

Kind of behind the scenes of a flower farmer florist,” Rohwer explains. The customers then pick their own flowers and get a lesson from her on creating arrangements, before making one to take home.

Rohwer loves getting people back into nature and connecting them to where their plants come from. “I wanted to give them more than just the flowers in the vase. I wanted them to see the flowers growing…and to be able to cut them and touch them and see the behind the scenes.”

so people are looking for ways to continue to be profitable.”

Rohwer agrees. “We could not do farming as our full time job. It would not make enough money for our family to survive.”

In addition to standing out, these farms are providing customers with experiences they can’t get anywhere else. “Without fail,” Rohwer says, “there are many who talk about their grandmother’s garden or their aunt’s garden and how that brings back childhood memories. I think we’re in, unfortunately, a generation that’s really lost touch with home gardens, and I think there’s some of us that are trying to bring that back.

taking their farm’s product and adding an extra value or experience. This encompasses not just agritourism, but craft beverage businesses, creameries, and selling meat by the cut, just as a few examples. “Farming is a tough business to be in, and Hilltop Blooms and Beef 34

Agritourism has grown over the years from a small aspect of some farms into a significant attraction, becoming a major part of what running a farm in Frederick County can be.

“During Covid,” says Riesett, “people were locked in their houses, and come Christmas time they just wanted to get out of the grind. They got out and they got a real tree, and they realized

that’s part of the meaning of Christmas.” The customers connect to the farms in a way they never have before, and that brings more than value, it brings the opportunity to create positive memories.

“One of our clients called our place a landscape of happiness,” says Blue Dream’s Roberts.

“And as a result of that, we’ve clarified our mission—to create a landscape of happiness in Frederick County and a one-of-akind agritourism destination.”

rederick County has been blessed by a strong agricultural community with so many folks sharing that story. Today, most people are four or five generations removed from agriculture so it’s more important than ever to talk about the importance of knowing where our food originates and the need to continue using the land in a productive manner.

Susan Summers could be described as the poster person for agriculture education. She has devoted decades to the cause, both professionally and as a volunteer. “I like to refer to it as an ‘ag’vocate,” she says. “Someone who educates, shares the story and speaks up for hard-working men and women who are supplying food, fiber and fuel for all of us. Just like any industry, you get a real appreciation for the incredible abundance and variety of safe and nutritious food that farmers produce.”

Summers has had a longstanding passion for agriculture, starting at a young age, influenced by parents who instilled responsibility and a work ethic through small-scale farming. “Milking cows by hand every day teaches you many life lessons and the mentors in the farming community become like family,” she says. “This agricultural community, this industry… that’s my passion. Giving back to people and an industry that “grew me up” — so blessed to be an ‘ag’vocate.”

After 14 years of working in agricultural journalism at The Frederick New-Post, Summers started an agricultural communications business, AgriVisions. She has a long list of clients and currently is executive director of the Maryland Agriculture Council as well as being involved

with several state dairy organizations.

Much of Summers ‘ advocacy comes from sharing the rich agricultural history in the state as well as farming’s economic impact. “The farming industry contributes over $8 billion to the state’s economy (which is mind-blowing), 350,000 Marylanders are employed in some aspect of agriculture and almost 90 percent of farms are family owned,” Summers says. “There are over 12,600 farms in the state and about 32 percent of the state’s landmass is farmland.”

Like many others, Summers fears valuable farmland being replaced by housing, solar installations and data centers. “Once that incredibly fertile land is lost to these structures, we will never get it back,” she points out, “We are all for preserving as much productive agricultural land as possible… but we have to preserve the farmer as well.”

Burrier agrees, believing advocacy for the next generation of farmers is critical. Burrier says that combating misinformation is a huge challenge.

“Today, there is so much information available about agriculture that is absolutely not true,” he says. “Those of us involved in agriculture have to speak up and tell our story to those misinformed.

Agriculture education is one of the three top priorities for the Frederick County Farm Bureau.”

It is imperative that young people know where their food comes from and how it is produced, Burrier says. “It is also a high priority to advocate to our legislators, since they make regulations for us to follow in our farming operations. It is very hard to stay within the guardrails of a regulation made by someone out of touch with our industry. We need to tell our story, that we produce the safest food on the planet while practicing the most progressive conservation practices.”

Frederick High School Agricultural Education teacher Richard Stonebraker says one of the biggest challenges is helping people recognize their personal connection to agriculture. “Whether they realize it or not, everyone is connected, but bridging that awareness gap can be difficult,” he adds. “As more generations become removed from the farm, agriculture risks

becoming an afterthought. It should remain at the forefront of our minds because it impacts every aspect of our daily lives.”

Stonebraker says his agricultural passion stems from his family, especially his Pop-Pop. “He instilled in me a deep respect for hard work and a love for agriculture,”

he says. “Even though I’m a generation removed from the farm, I was fortunate to witness firsthand the value, dedication and resilience my family poured into everything they did. My passion is also fueled by knowing that I am making a difference in the world when it comes to agriculture.”

As the State Grange president, Stonebraker also emphasizes that food doesn’t just appear on your plate. “There is an entire system of hardworking individuals behind every meal,” he says. “Agriculture is something we often take for granted, but without it we would be in a very difficult position.”

The importance of agriculture resonates with Sara Kidd, Agriculture and Food Systems Extension Educator for Frederick County.

She’s new to her title and excited to share agriculture’s story.

“Being an agricultural advocate, for me, is a commitment that goes far beyond simply promoting farmers,” she says. “It means consistently championing the work of farmers, not just as producers of commodities, but as environmental stewards, small business owners and vital contributors to food security and local communities.”

As an extension agent, Kidd’s mission is split into

two key areas: first, is transferring research-based knowledge from the university to producers to help improve their practices; and second, she listens to the specific challenges of farmers and finds ways to support their agricultural operations and livelihoods.

“Ultimately, getting the word out about agricul-

ture is about securing the future of farming and the land we all depend on,” she says. “It is a proactive investment in the next generation, ensuring they inherit a system that is resilient, productive and respected.”

The extension agent says there are challenges educating the public because it’s a wide audience, everyone from children to policymakers. “We

need to educate about modern farming practices, addressing misconceptions and highlighting the complexity involved in bringing food from field to table,” Kidd explains. “This means being transparent about topics like sustainable land management, water usage, animal welfare and the integration of technology in agriculture.”

Agriculture is not just an industry; it is a way of life that connects every single person, whether they realize it or not, Stonebraker says. “From the food we eat, to the clothes we wear, to the resources we depend on daily, agriculture is at the foundation of it all. Yet, as society continues to move further away from the farm, that connection is becoming less visible.

“It is about sharing information; it is about building understanding, trust and appreciation,” the ag teacher says. “It is also about creating opportunities for people to see themselves in agriculture, regardless of their background or experience. Through my work in education and leadership, I strive to bridge the gap. Whether I am in the classroom, working with an organization, or serving through the Grange or Farm Bureau, my goal is always the same: to ensure that agriculture remains relevant, respected and understood for generations to come.”
