A driveway probably isn’t something most homeowners think about every day—until cracks appear, potholes develop or that once-smooth surface starts looking a little worse for wear. That’s where Got Paving comes in.

FILL UPS & TOP OFFS

le Availabs! 7 Day

Serving Ellicott City and communities throughout Central Maryland, Got Paving tackles projects ranging from residential driveways to commercial parking lots and roadways. The company works throughout Howard, Carroll and Montgomery counties, bringing its paving expertise to homeowners, businesses and property managers across the region. While fresh blacktop may be the most noticeable result, there’s considerably more to paving than simply putting down asphalt. Proper preparation, grading and drainage all play important roles in creating a surface designed to handle vehicles, changing temperatures and Maryland’s unpredictable weather. Got Paving’s services include new asphalt installation, resurfacing and overlays, pothole and crack repair, sealcoating, grading and excavation. The company also handles commercial needs such as parking lot striping and ADA-compliance projects. And asphalt isn’t the only material on the menu. Got Paving also works with concrete, providing flatwork for driveways and slabs along with patios, walkways, pavers and stamped-concrete projects. For properties with long drives or a more rustic setting, chip sealing—often called tar and chip— provides another option. The company serves both residential and commercial customers, so projects can vary dramatically in size. One day’s work might involve refreshing a neighborhood driveway; another could mean resurfacing a business parking lot or tackling grading and site preparation.

Because when it comes to potholes, cracks and crumbling pavement, sometimes the best road forward is simply a smoother one.

It may not be the flashiest home improvement, but a smooth, well-maintained driveway can make a surprisingly big difference in a property’s appearance—and make every trip home a little less bumpy.

Running out of room in the garage? Dreaming of a backyard greenhouse? Need a chicken coop, a pool house or simply a better place to hide all the stuff that mysteriously accumulates over the years? Myers Mini Barns has a building for that. Located at 16041 Frederick Road in Lisbon, Myers Mini Barns has been a family‑owned and operated business for more than four decades. Founder William Melvin “Junior” Myers started the company in 1982, and his son Gary took over in 2005, continuing the family tradition of helping customers create practical—and attractive—outdoor spaces.

SHED HAPPENS: MYERS MINI BARNS

BUSINESS & OFFICE EQUIPMENT

Despite the name, “mini barns” are only the beginning. Myers offers sheds and garages in a variety of styles, along with gazebos, pavilions, pergolas, greenhouses, playsets, pool houses, chicken coops, dog kennels and outdoor furniture. Many buildings can be customized with different colors, doors, windows and other features, so your new shed doesn’t have to look like an afterthought sitting in the backyard. Can’t quite picture what you want? Customers can use the company’s 3D design tool to customize a building and see real‑time pricing or stop by for help creating something that fits their property and needs. And a trip to Myers can turn into a family outing. During the warmer months, visitors can browse the buildings and outdoor furniture while enjoying a treat from Alex’s Ice Cream & Snow Cones. Junior’s Produce Stand, renamed in honor of the company’s founder, also operates seasonally. With American‑made products, generations of family history and enough backyard possibilities to get your imagination working overtime, Myers Mini Barns proves one thing: When “shed happens,” they’re ready for it.

For more than 90 years, Southern States Mt. Airy Cooperative has been a part of the Mount Airy community. Since opening our doors on Hill Street in 1935, to moving to our current location on South Main Street in 1996, we've had the privilege of serving generations of families, farmers, pet owners, gardeners, and neighbors. We've celebrated milestones with you, shared conversations across the counter, and watched this wonderful community grow. It is with great difficulty that we announce Southern States Mt. Airy will be closing its doors later this year. Our retail operations will be winding down over the coming months, with our store officially closing by December. Before we say goodbye, we'd love for you to join us for one of our favorite traditions: our Annual Christmas Photos with Santa and the U.S. Marine Corps on Saturday, December 5, 2026 from 10 am to 3 pm. We hope you'll bring your family, children, pets, and smiles as we celebrate the season together one last time at our store. The shelves may be bare, but this is a tradition we've cherished throughout the years, and we can't think of a better way to say goodbye and celebrate the memories we've made together than to host one more Christmas Event. We also will be collecting for the TOYS-FOR-TOTS Program again this year. We truly appreciate the loyalty, friendship, and support you have shown us over the decades and we could not have asked for a better community to serve. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for allowing us to be part of your lives for the past 91 years. Thank you, Mount Airy!

FROM BACKYARD BET TO BRAGGING RIGHTS For generations of Maryland families, the name Rheb’s Candies has meant one thing: chocolate. Lots of very, very good chocolate. Now, that century-old Baltimore tradition has found a second home on Main Street in Mount Airy.

We Also Do Hardscape Patios & Sidewalks

Rheb’s opened its Mount Airy shop at 1 South Main Street in August 2025, marking an exciting expansion for a family business whose story began more than a century ago. Founded by Louis and Esther Rheb in 1917, the company started with Louis making candies in the basement of the couple’s Baltimore home. What began with taffies, brittles, fudge and jellies eventually grew into one of Maryland’s best-known confectionery traditions. The Mount Airy store brings that history—and plenty of chocolate—closer to customers in Carroll and Frederick counties. It’s only the company’s second most current retail location, joining the longtime Wilkens Avenue shop in Baltimore. Inside, longtime Rheb’s fans will recognize the treats that have inspired generations of holiday traditions, gift giving and occasional “I’ll just have one” promises. The selection includes handmade chocolates, truffles, creams, caramels, clusters and seasonal specialties, along with assortments that make choosing a favorite deliciously difficult.

Cleaning • Restoration • Repairs

301-253-2718

The Mount Airy opening also represents something bigger than satisfying the local sweet tooth. Bringing such an established Maryland business to downtown adds another reason to stroll Main Street, shop locally and discover something with a genuine connection to the state’s history.

And Rheb’s certainly has history. The company remains family-owned, with descendants of Louis and Esther continuing the candy-making tradition more than 100 years after that first batch was created.

SUNSHINE LAWN SERVICE–WHERE GREAT LANDSCAPES TAKE ROOT A beautiful yard should be a place to enjoy—not a never‑ending weekend to‑do list. That’s where SLS Landscaping Services comes in. Based in Woodbine, SLS is a full‑service landscaping company serving residential and commercial properties throughout Howard County, Carroll County and portions of Montgomery County. From routine lawn maintenance to complete outdoor transformations, the company focuses on creating attractive, functional spaces while taking some of the work off the property owner’s plate.

Commercial & residential Commercial Owner Operated O p er era ated - INsured

SLS has roots in Sunshine Lawn Service, where owner Trevor Hubbard began working in 2007 while attending the University of Maryland. What started as college‑break work grew into something much bigger. Hubbard eventually helped manage crews and daily operations before purchasing the business in 2014. Since then, SLS has expanded its territory, equipment and services. Today, those services cover just about every season. Lawn mowing, pruning, aerating, seeding, mulching and planting keep properties looking polished, while landscape design can give tired yards a fresh start. For bigger projects, SLS offers hardscaping such as patios, walkways, retaining walls and fire pits, as well as grading, drainage solutions and land clearing. When winter arrives, commercial snow and ice management keeps the team busy even after the grass stops growing. Perhaps most importantly, SLS understands that a yard isn’t just something to maintain. It’s part of your home, your business and the way you enjoy your outdoor space. Whether you need help taming an unruly lawn or have bigger plans for your property, SLS Landscaping Services can help turn “we really need to do something with this yard” into “why didn’t we do this sooner?” Because sometimes a better backyard starts with getting your weekends back.

HOW TO FERTILIZE YOUR YARD WITHOUT CHEMICALS

gradually decompose, adding organic matter and nutrients to the soil. Thick layers of whole leaves should not be left covering the lawn, because they can block sunlight and air from reaching the grass.

A healthy, green yard does not have to depend on synthetic fertilizers and harsh chemicals. In fact, many natural ways to improve your soil can help your grass grow stronger while supporting beneficial insects, microorganisms, and the overall health of your yard. By focusing on the soil rather than simply forcing grass to grow quickly, you can create a healthier lawn using simple, environmentally friendly practices. One of the easiest ways to naturally fertilize your yard is to leave grass clippings on the lawn after mowing. Grass clippings contain nitrogen and other nutrients that can return to the soil as they break down. As long as the grass is mowed regularly and the clippings are not excessively long or wet, they can usually be left where they fall. This practice, sometimes called grasscycling, reduces waste while naturally returning nutrients to the lawn. Compost is another excellent natural fertilizer. Finished compost contains organic matter and nutrients that can improve soil structure and support healthy plant growth. You can spread a thin layer of compost over your lawn and gently rake it into the grass. Compost can also be mixed into garden beds and used around trees and shrubs. If you make your own compost from leaves, vegetable scraps, and yard waste, you can turn materials that might otherwise become trash into a valuable soil amendment. Another helpful strategy is to use shredded leaves in the fall. Instead of removing every leaf from your property, mow over them several times so they break into small pieces. The tiny pieces can settle between grass blades and

Planting clover is another option for a more natural lawn. Clover can help add nitrogen to the soil because it works with beneficial bacteria associated with its roots to make atmospheric nitrogen available to plants. A lawn that includes clover can also provide food for pollinators and may require less supplemental nitrogen fertilizer. Clover is especially useful for homeowners who are interested in moving away from the traditional perfectly uniform grass lawn. Aerating your soil can also improve the effectiveness of natural fertilization. Compacted soil makes it difficult for water, air, and nutrients to reach grass roots. Aeration creates small openings that allow these essential resources to move into the soil. Once the soil is less compacted, organic materials such as compost can work more effectively.

Creating a healthy yard without synthetic chemicals takes patience, but the results can be rewarding. Grass clippings, compost, leaves, clover, healthy soil, proper watering, and appropriate plants can all contribute to a naturally healthier landscape. Instead of trying to force your lawn to grow as quickly as possible, focus on building healthy soil and creating conditions where your yard can thrive naturally.

PYLE FENCE

CALL OR TEXT

Watering properly is equally important. Overwatering can wash nutrients away and encourage shallow roots, while insufficient water can stress the grass. Deep, less frequent watering generally encourages roots to grow deeper, helping the lawn become more resilient during dry periods. Watering in the morning can also reduce unnecessary evaporation. Finally, consider choosing grass varieties that are well suited to your local climate and growing conditions. A grass that naturally thrives in your region will generally require less fertilizer, water, and maintenance than one that struggles to adapt.

Maryland is known by several nicknames, but one of its most famous is the “Old Line State.” The name is closely connected to Maryland’s role in the American Revolutionary War and the courage of its soldiers. Although the exact origins of many historical nicknames can be complicated, Maryland’s connection to the Continental Army’s Maryland Line is the most widely accepted explanation for why the state became known as the Old Line State.

known as Maryland 400. Although the exact number of soldiers involved and some details of the story have been debated by historians, the Maryland troops clearly made a significant sacrifice during the American retreat. Their actions became an enduring symbol of Maryland’s contribution to the struggle for independence.

During the American Revolution, Maryland supported the colonies in their fight for independence from Great Britain. In 1781, Maryland became the seventh state to ratify the Articles of Confederation, and Maryland troops played an important role in the Revolutionary War. Soldiers from the colony formed units that became known as the Maryland Line, which earned a reputation for discipline, determination, and bravery. The story behind the nickname is often connected to the Battle of Long Island, fought in August 1776. George Washington’s Continental Army was attempting to defend New York from a much larger British force. The American troops were overwhelmed and forced to retreat. During the fighting, Maryland soldiers repeatedly fought against the advancing British forces, helping other American troops escape. The Maryland soldiers suffered heavy casualties, but their resistance gave Washington’s army valuable time. According to historical tradition, Washington was so impressed by their courage that he referred to them as his “Old Line.” The expression eventually became associated with Maryland and its soldiers. One of the most famous stories from the Battle of Long Island involves a small group of Maryland troops who fought at a location later

HoCoMo Freddie's Trading Post

The word “line” in the nickname has a military meaning. During the Revolutionary War, soldiers often fought in organized lines, standing together in formation. The Maryland Line referred to Maryland’s organized Continental Army units. The word “old” came to symbolize the unit’s established reputation and its long‑standing service to the American cause. Maryland’s military tradition did not end with the Revolutionary War. The state continued to play important roles in later American conflicts. Maryland’s location between the North and South made it particularly significant during the Civil War. Although Maryland remained in the Union, the state was deeply divided over slavery and the war. Maryland soldiers fought on both sides of the conflict, adding another complicated chapter to the state’s history. The “Old Line State” nickname, however, remains most strongly connected to the Revolutionary War and the Maryland Line. It represents the idea of standing firm during difficult circumstances and making sacrifices for a larger cause. Today, the nickname can be seen throughout Maryland. It appears on state memorabilia, historical markers, government materials, and references to Maryland’s military heritage. For many residents, the Old Line State is more than a catchy nickname. It is a reminder that Maryland played an important part in the founding of the United States. Maryland’s history is filled with stories of courage, conflict, sacrifice, and change. The story of the Maryland Line is one of the earliest examples of Marylanders making their mark on the nation’s history. The soldiers who fought during the Revolutionary War helped preserve the Continental Army during some of its most difficult moments. Their determination became part of Maryland’s identity, and the name “Old Line State” continues to honor that legacy more than two centuries later.

with butter, added to soups, or baked into casseroles. Maryland farms also produce other root vegetables in the cooler months, including carrots, beets, turnips, and radishes.

Fall is a wonderful time to enjoy fresh produce in Maryland. As summer crops begin to disappear, farms, farmers markets, roadside stands, and gardens fill with the colors and flavors of autumn. Maryland’s changing seasons and fertile farmland provide excellent growing conditions for a wide variety of fruits and vegetables, making fall an especially delicious time of year for local food. One of the most recognizable fall crops in Maryland is the apple. Maryland orchards produce many varieties, including popular favorites such as Fuji, Gala, Honeycrisp, and Granny Smith. Apple picking is a favorite fall activity for families, and freshly picked apples can be enjoyed in countless ways. They are delicious eaten fresh, but they also make wonderful pies, crisps, sauces, breads, and other seasonal desserts. Pumpkins are another unmistakable symbol of fall in Maryland. Pumpkin patches become popular destinations as Halloween approaches, but pumpkins are much more than decorations. They can be roasted, pureed into soups, baked into pies, or used in breads and muffins. Smaller varieties of winter squash, including butternut, acorn, and delicata squash, are also plentiful during the fall and are perfect for hearty seasonal meals. Sweet potatoes are another nutritious fall favorite. Their natural sweetness makes them versatile enough for both savory and sweet dishes. They can be roasted with herbs, mashed

Specializing in Renovation & Service

Leafy greens thrive in Maryland’s cooler fall temperatures. Kale, collard greens, spinach, Swiss chard, and other greens can often be found at local markets. Unlike delicate summer greens, many fall greens hold up well when cooked, making them ideal for soups, stews, and side dishes. They also provide important vitamins, minerals, and fiber.

Brussels sprouts, broccoli, cauliflower, and cabbage are additional cool‑season vegetables that become readily available in the fall. Roasting these vegetables brings out their natural flavors and creates simple side dishes that pair well with traditional autumn meals. Freshly harvested vegetables can also be incorporated into salads, casseroles, and stir‑fries. Maryland’s fall harvest isn’t limited to vegetables. Pears, grapes, and cranberries can also be part of the seasonal selection, depending on the crop and growing conditions. Local honey, cider, jams, and other farm products often complement the fresh produce available during the season. Shopping for Maryland‑grown produce during the fall is a great way to support local farmers while enjoying food at its seasonal peak. Farmers markets and farm stands offer opportunities to meet growers and discover varieties that may not always be available in grocery stores. Buying locally can also make meals feel more connected to the season and the community. Fall in Maryland offers an abundance of fresh ingredients and plenty of inspiration for the kitchen. Whether you are biting into a crisp apple, carving a pumpkin, roasting a tray of root vegetables, or preparing a comforting soup with seasonal greens, Maryland’s fall produce makes it easy to celebrate the changing season one delicious meal at a time.

WHY ADOPTING A PET IS BETTER THAN BUYING

Adoption can also be more affordable than purchasing a pet. Adoption fees often include important veterinary services such as vaccinations, spaying or neutering, and sometimes microchipping. While adopting a pet still involves significant expenses for food, veterinary care, supplies, training, and other needs, the initial cost can be considerably less than buying an animal from a breeder or pet seller.

Bringing a pet into your home is a big decision and an exciting experience. Whether you are looking for a playful dog, a cuddly cat, or another companion animal, there are many ways to find your new family member. For many people, adopting a pet from a shelter or rescue organization is a wonderful choice. Adoption can provide an animal with a second chance while giving you the opportunity to welcome a loving companion into your life. One of the biggest reasons to adopt is that there are so many animals already waiting for homes. Animal shelters and rescue organizations care for pets that have been abandoned, surrendered, or found as strays. Many of these animals are healthy, affectionate, and ready to become part of a family. Unfortunately, shelters can become overcrowded, and some animals may spend months or even years waiting for permanent homes. When you adopt, you help create space and resources for other animals who need assistance. Adoption can also save a life. Choosing a shelter pet gives an animal the opportunity to experience the security and companionship of a permanent home. Instead of purchasing an animal when countless pets are already waiting for families, adoption allows you to make a direct difference in the life of an animal that needs you.

Another benefit is that shelters often have a wide variety of pets. You may find puppies and kittens, but you can also find adult and senior animals with wonderful personalities. Adult pets can be particularly appealing because their personalities and energy levels are often easier to understand. A shelter worker or foster family may be able to tell you whether an animal enjoys children, gets along with other pets, prefers a quiet household, or loves being active.

HoCoMo Freddie's Trading Post

Perhaps the most meaningful part of adoption is the relationship that develops between you and your new companion. Many adopted pets seem to understand that they have been given another chance. They can become incredibly loyal and affectionate members of the family. While every animal has a unique personality and history, the bond that develops through patience, trust, and care can be deeply rewarding. Adoption also helps discourage irresponsible breeding and the commercial sale of animals under poor conditions. When people choose responsible adoption options, they support organizations that focus on animal welfare and reduce demand for pets from questionable sources. If someone has specific needs that make working with a responsible breeder the right choice, careful research and ethical breeding practices are important. However, for many families, adoption is an excellent first option. Before adopting, it is important to think carefully about your lifestyle and the needs of the animal. Pets require time, attention, exercise, training, veterinary care, and commitment. Adoption should not be an impulse decision. The goal is to find an animal whose personality, energy level, and needs are a good match for your household. Ultimately, adopting a pet is about much more than bringing an animal home. It is about giving a deserving companion a safe place to live while gaining a friend who can bring joy, laughter, comfort, and companionship into your life. When you adopt, you are not just choosing a pet—you are giving an animal a second chance and making room for another animal to be helped. For many families, that makes adoption an especially meaningful way to find a new best friend.
