HOW THE SANDWICH GENERATION CAN FIND HELP CARING FOR AN AGING PARENT engaged.
Myth No. 2: I should be able to handle this myself.
According to the 2026 National Day of Joy survey conducted by Talker Research on behalf of Comfort Keepers, 93% of aging adults say being cared for by an adult son or daughter has brought them closer together, and 96% of caregivers in the sandwich generation say family comes first. The strength of these familial bonds is clear, but that does not mean you do not need support as you try to meet the needs of your children, your parents and yourself.
Reality: Getting help before your parent’s care reaches a crisis can make the caregiving journey easier for everyone. Progressive conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s can affect memory, communication, mobility, mood, personality, daily routines and eventually activities of daily living such as eating, hydrating, getting dressed or bathing. Planning ahead gives families time to have necessary conversations about long‑term care, find the right professional caregiver, establish familiar routines and create a care plan that can evolve along with their parent’s needs and a family’s finances.
How do I maintain my well‑being while caring for my aging parent?
Myth No. 4: Every visit needs to be productive.
Caring for yourself is one of the biggest challenges for family caregivers. The additional time needed to care for someone with dementia or a neurodegenerative disease like Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s while maintaining work‑life balance and raising children makes the sandwich generation dementia caregiver sacrifice their own social, emotional and physical health. You may also be burdened with the stigma of diseases that affect the brain and avoid social interactions and conversations. Thus, you feel all alone.
Reality: Sometimes the most important thing is simply being your parent’s son or daughter. Professional caregiving can take some everyday responsibilities off your shoulders, so your time with your parent is not always consumed by errands, household tasks and caregiving duties. By being “present,” you enhance the emotional health of your parent and yourself.
Companionship, favorite routines, conversation, activities and sharing moments of joy help an older adult feel connected and engaged. To help sandwich generation caregivers get back to what matters most, here are common myths around caregiving, and approaches that help families thrive. Myth No. 1: Mom or Dad is safe, so everything is OK. Reality: Quality of life matters, too. Caregiving is not just about physical tasks and safety such as doctor appointments, preventing harmful falls and personal care. Social health and avoiding loneliness are equally important. Companionship, favorite routines and activities, conversation and sharing moments of joy help an older adult and the family caregiver feel connected and
HoCoMo.com
How can I keep my relationship with my aging parent intact? Caring for a parent with dementia, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s is emotionally difficult for family caregivers. Alzheimer’s adults may forget your name or who you are, and they may become combative and physically lash out, especially if experiencing sundowning. A son or daughter of someone with Parkinson’s realizes they may have frightening hallucinations and nightmares. All of this occurs in addition to their declining physical and cognitive abilities. The Comfort Keepers survey reveals that daily joy for aging adults is rooted in the connection found in everyday life moments: sitting outside, enjoying morning coffee or engaging in meaningful hobbies such as reading, gardening, crafts and music. These moments foster consistency, independence and a sense of purpose. And they give the family caregiver a moment of calm in the midst of chaos.

If you are a caregiver who belongs to the sandwich generation, you are performing a delicate balancing act: caring for children and older parents, maybe while also working. You stretch your time, energy and emotional resources thin and have little time for “me time” or self‑care. The good news is, while caregiving can be disruptive, it is also one of the most powerful expressions of love. The key is finding ways to connect joyfully with aging parents, and being proactive in getting help so you can enjoy your time together.
Reality: Caregiver burnout is real. Creating your care team is critical. Many adult children assume care responsibilities gradually, until you are spending 20‑40 hours of week on care tasks. This can lead to burnout and can negatively impact your relationship with your parent. Professional caregivers, such as the in‑home care specialists at Comfort Keepers, can become a part of your family’s care team before a crisis happens. With this professional help, you can take breaks to recharge and practice needed self‑care, so you can be more focused on the emotional needs instead of the medical needs of your loved one.

Fall is also an excellent time to address compacted soil. Over the course of summer, lawns can become compacted from foot traffic, outdoor activities and weather conditions. Compacted soil makes it harder for water, air and nutrients to reach grass roots. Core aeration can help by removing small plugs of soil from the lawn and creating channels that allow essential resources to penetrate deeper into the root zone. Aeration is particularly beneficial for lawns that receive heavy use or have areas where water tends to pool.

As summer fades and cooler temperatures arrive, fall is one of the most important seasons for lawn maintenance. The work you do in autumn can help your grass recover from summer stress, develop stronger roots and prepare for a healthier, greener lawn when spring arrives. With a little planning and consistent care, homeowners can take advantage of fall’s ideal growing conditions to give their lawns a strong foundation for the year ahead. One of the first steps in fall lawn maintenance is adjusting your mowing routine. As temperatures cool and grass growth slows, you will gradually need to mow less frequently. However, it is important not to stop mowing too early. Leaving grass excessively long going into winter can create an environment where moisture becomes trapped and diseases can develop. On the other hand, cutting grass too short can expose the crown of the plant to winter damage. A good approach is to continue mowing as needed while gradually lowering the mowing height toward the end of the season, following the recommendations for your particular type of grass.

Heavy Bag, $20, 571‑267‑0224.
Overseeding is another valuable fall lawn‑care task, especially for cool‑season grasses. Fall temperatures are often ideal for seed germination because the soil remains warm while the air becomes cooler. Before spreading
Fertilizing at the right time can also make a significant difference. Fall feeding gives grass access to nutrients while it is still actively growing and developing its root system. A properly timed application can help grass store energy for winter and emerge more vigorously in spring. Homeowners should choose a fertilizer appropriate for their grass type and soil conditions and follow application instructions carefully. A soil test can also help determine whether the lawn actually needs additional nutrients. Leaves are one of the biggest fall lawn‑maintenance challenges. Although a thin layer of leaves may eventually break down and return organic matter to the soil, thick layers can block sunlight and air from reaching the grass. Wet leaves can also create conditions that encourage fungal problems. Regularly raking, blowing or mulching leaves can help keep the lawn healthy. If using a mower to mulch leaves, make sure the pieces are small enough to filter down through the grass rather than forming a thick layer on top. Fall is also a good time to inspect your lawn for weeds. Some weeds become especially noticeable during autumn, and controlling them at the appropriate time can reduce competition for water, nutrients and sunlight. Removing weeds before winter can make spring lawn care easier and help prevent them from becoming firmly established. Finally, don’t forget to prepare your lawn‑care equipment for the off‑season. Clean your mower, sharpen its blades and check the oil and other maintenance items before storing it. Proper equipment care can make it easier to get started when spring arrives. Fall lawn maintenance is about more than keeping your yard looking neat. It is an opportunity to strengthen your grass, improve soil conditions and prepare your landscape for the challenges of winter. By mowing appropriately, aerating when needed, overseeding, fertilizing responsibly, managing leaves and addressing weeds, homeowners can set their lawns up for a healthier and more attractive growing season next year.

FROM BACKYARD-TO-BACKYARD OASIS Some people look at a backyard and see grass that needs mowing. The team at Rhine Landscaping sees possibilities; a stone patio, an outdoor kitchen, a cozy fireplace, lush gardens or maybe even a swimming pool calling your name. Based in western Howard County and serving Ellicott City and surrounding communities, Rhine Landscaping has deep local roots. The business grew from the Rhine family farm, which has been in the family since 1923. Jay Rhine began cutting grass and landscaping in the 1990s to help support the farm, and the operation eventually developed into the full‑service outdoor living company it is today. And “full‑service” is the right description.
For Ellicott City homeowners, Rhine emphasizes creating landscapes that are both beautiful and practical. Designers consider the individual features of a property, incorporating plants and hardscaping to create outdoor spaces that complement the home and can provide interest throughout the seasons. Maintenance services can help keep everything looking good long after the final plant goes into the ground. Whether the goal is freshening up tired landscaping or transforming the entire backyard into a staycation‑worthy retreat, Rhine approaches outdoor spaces with an eye toward how homeowners actually want to live in them. Because sometimes the best room in the house isn’t in the house at all.

Rhine handles landscape design and maintenance, swimming pools, patios, walkways, retaining walls, drainage solution, fireplaces, fire pits, outdoor kitchens, decks and pavilions. The company also designs and builds swimming pools and spas and offers drainage and exterior waterproofing solutions. Because many of these services are handled in‑house, homeowners can work with one company to coordinate multiple pieces of a major outdoor project.

Then there’s the tea.
McAlister’s Famous Sweet Tea has developed a following all its own. Fresh-brewed and sweetened with pure cane sugar, it’s as much a part of the restaurant’s identity as its towering sandwiches and giant potatoes. The Mount Airy location also offers dine-in service along with order-ahead, pickup, delivery and catering, making it equally suited for a quick lunch, an easy family dinner or feeding a crowd. For Mount Airy, the arrival also adds another choice to the community’s growing dining scene—and one of only a handful of McAlister’s locations currently operating in Maryland.

A COMPLETE FURNITURE SERVICE
The McAlister’s story began in Oxford, Mississippi, in 1989, when the first restaurant opened in a converted movie-set diner. More than three decades later, the concept has grown to hundreds of locations across the country while keeping many of the foods that built its following firmly at the center of the menu. Sandwich lovers have plenty to explore, including the signature McAlister’s Club, stacked with smoked turkey, Black Forest ham, bacon, cheddar and Swiss. But sandwiches are only part of the equation. The restaurant’s oversized baked potatoes—affectionately known as “spuds”—can arrive loaded with everything from cheese and bacon to chicken, vegetables and other toppings. Soups, salads and mix-and-match combinations offer plenty of choices for lighter appetites, too.

McAlister’s Deli has opened at 301 East Ridgeville Boulevard in the Mount Airy Shopping Center, bringing its combination of hearty sandwiches, enormous baked potatoes, fresh salads, soups and—perhaps most importantly to devoted fans—its Famous Sweet Tea to the community.

Halloween is a favorite fall tradition for children and adults alike, but getting ready for the holiday takes a little planning. From choosing costumes and decorating the house to stocking up on candy and preparing for trick‑or‑treaters, starting early can make Halloween more enjoyable and less stressful. One of the first things to consider is a Halloween costume. Whether you are making a costume at home, shopping for one, or putting together an outfit from clothing you already own, it helps to make a decision well before October 31. Families with children may also want to make sure costumes fit comfortably and allow kids to walk, sit and see clearly. Masks and accessories should not interfere with a child’s ability to see where they are going. Decorating is another fun part of preparing for Halloween. A few simple decorations can transform a front porch or yard into a festive space. Pumpkins, autumn leaves, string lights, scarecrows and Halloween signs can create a welcoming atmosphere without requiring a major investment. If you plan to use outdoor decorations, make sure they are securely fastened and do not create obstacles for visitors. Pumpkin preparation is a popular Halloween activity, especially for families. When selecting
Candy is another important part of Halloween planning. If you expect trick‑or‑treaters, purchase enough treats so you are not scrambling for supplies at the last minute. You can also consider having a few non‑food treats available for children with food allergies or dietary restrictions. Keeping candy somewhere out of sight can also help prevent it from mysteriously disappearing before Halloween night. Safety should be part of every Halloween plan. Clear walkways, outdoor steps and porches of clutter, toys, hoses and other objects that could cause someone to trip. Outdoor lighting can help visitors see where they are walking. If children are going trick‑or‑treating, establish rules about staying together, crossing streets carefully and checking treats before eating them. It is also worth thinking about pets before Halloween arrives. Doorbells, costumes, decorations and frequent visitors can be overwhelming for some animals. Keeping pets in a quiet, secure area of the house can help reduce stress and prevent them from accidentally escaping when the door opens. Finally, remember that Halloween does not have to be elaborate to be memorable. Whether your celebration includes a neighborhood gathering, a family movie night, pumpkin carving or traditional trick‑or‑treating, the goal is to enjoy the season. A little preparation ahead of time can leave you with more time to relax, have fun and enjoy Halloween with the people around you.

Installation PLANTING IN THE FALL crocuses, hyacinths and other bulbs need a Chimney period of cold temperatures in order to produce flowers in spring. Planting them in autumn gives Cleaning them time to establish roots before the ground freezes. A little effort in September, October or November can result in colorful blooms when Liners, Dampers the landscape begins waking up after winter. When planting in fall, choosing the right & Caps location is just as important as choosing the Fall is one of the best times of year for planting in Maryland. As summer heat fades and cooler temperatures arrive, the conditions become ideal for helping many trees, shrubs, perennials and spring‑blooming bulbs establish themselves before winter. With a little planning, fall planting can give your garden a strong start for the following growing season. One of the biggest advantages of planting in the fall is the cooler weather. Maryland summers can bring intense heat and periods of drought that place stress on newly planted vegetation. In fall, daytime temperatures are generally more moderate, while the soil can remain warm from the summer months. This combination allows roots to continue growing even as the plants above ground begin slowing down for winter.

Fall also tends to bring more consistent moisture than the hottest part of summer. Although newly planted trees and plants still need regular watering, cooler temperatures reduce evaporation and help the soil retain moisture. Gardeners should continue checking soil moisture after planting, particularly during dry periods, but fall plants often require less supplemental water than plants installed during summer.

Trees and shrubs are especially good candidates for fall planting in Maryland. Deciduous trees, evergreens and many native shrubs can benefit from being planted while the soil is still workable. A plant that has time to develop a healthy root system before spring arrives may be better prepared to handle the warmer temperatures and increased growth demands of the next season. Fall is also the perfect season to plant spring‑flowering bulbs. Daffodils, tulips,
PYLE FENCE
Proper planting technique can also make a significant difference. Dig a hole that is wide enough to accommodate the roots without crowding them, but avoid planting trees and shrubs too deeply. Once the plant is in the ground, water it thoroughly to help settle the soil around the roots. Adding a layer of organic mulch around the plant can help conserve moisture and moderate soil temperatures. Keep mulch several inches away from tree trunks and plant stems to prevent moisture‑related problems. Fall is also a good time to divide and transplant many established perennials. Plants that have become overcrowded can often be separated and moved to new locations while temperatures are mild. This is an opportunity to improve garden spacing and create new planting areas without purchasing additional plants. Gardeners should keep Maryland’s changing weather in mind as winter approaches. Planting too late, particularly when the ground is frozen or consistently wet, can make establishment more difficult. Give new plants enough time to develop roots before severe winter conditions arrive. Whether you’re adding a few flowering bulbs, planting a new shade tree or expanding a perennial garden, fall offers Maryland gardeners an excellent opportunity to get ahead. The work done during the autumn months can pay off beautifully when spring arrives, making fall one of the most rewarding seasons for planting and preparing the garden.

right plant. Consider how much sunlight an area receives, how well the soil drains and how large the plant will eventually become. Maryland has a variety of soil types and growing conditions, so selecting plants suited to the specific location can make gardening much easier.

They also offer nature craft classes like stained glass, natural dye printing and pumpkin succulent arrangements as well as seasonal ladies night out events. “We aim to build a local community,” says Lauren. Lauren Turner’s background in horticulture and passion for environmental stewardship have shaped a business focused on creating landscapes that benefit both homeowners and the natural world. Together with a dedicated team of professionals, she has built a reputation for exceptional service, expert knowledge, and innovative landscape solutions. There’s something refreshingly old‑school about walking into a hardware store, explaining your latest home‑improvement predicament and having someone actually know how to help. At Kendall Hardware in Clarksville, that kind of service has been part of the business for generations. Located at 12260 Clarksville Pike, Kendall Hardware Inc traces its roots to the late 1940s, when Charles Kendall opened a feed and farm store with the help of his family. As Clarksville changed, so did the business, eventually evolving into the full‑service hardware store generations of Howard County residents know today.

For generations of Maryland families, the name Rheb’s Candies has meant one thing: chocolate. Lots of very, very good chocolate. Now, that century-old Baltimore tradition has found a second home on Main Street in Mount Airy.
e! Experienc ’ s r a e Y 30
COLSON’S SEPTIC SERVICE Serving Carroll, Howard, Frederick, Baltimore, & Montgomery Counties
Rheb’s opened its Mount Airy shop at 1 South Main Street in August 2025, marking an exciting expansion for a family business whose story began more than a century ago. Founded by Louis and Esther Rheb in 1917, the company started with Louis making candies in the basement of the couple’s Baltimore home. What began with taffies, brittles, fudge and jellies eventually grew into one of Maryland’s best-known confectionery traditions. The Mount Airy store brings that history—and plenty of chocolate—closer to customers in Carroll and Frederick counties. It’s only the company’s second most current retail location, joining the longtime Wilkens Avenue shop in Baltimore. Inside, longtime Rheb’s fans will recognize the treats that have inspired generations of holiday traditions, gift giving and occasional “I’ll just have one” promises. The selection includes handmade chocolates, truffles, creams, caramels, clusters and seasonal specialties, along with assortments that make choosing a favorite deliciously difficult. The Mount Airy opening also represents something bigger than satisfying the local sweet tooth. Bringing such an established Maryland business to downtown adds another reason to stroll Main Street, shop locally and discover something with a genuine connection to the state’s history. And Rheb’s certainly has history. The company remains family-owned, with descendants of Louis and Esther continuing the candy-making tradition more than 100 years after that first batch was created. For longtime devotees, the Mount Airy shop means a shorter drive for a familiar favorite. For newcomers, it’s an introduction to a Maryland institution. Either way, there’s only one question left: Milk chocolate or dark?

CHRISTMAS SPENDING ON A BUDGET prices, watch for sales, and look for coupons or discounts. It also reduces the temptation to make last‑minute purchases simply because you need to find a gift quickly. Before buying something, compare prices at several stores and consider whether the item is genuinely a good value.
The holiday season is a time for gathering with family and friends, enjoying traditions, and giving thoughtful gifts. However, Christmas can also bring significant financial pressure. Between presents, decorations, food, travel, and holiday activities, expenses can quickly add up. Fortunately, celebrating Christmas does not have to mean spending more money than you can afford. With a little planning and creativity, it is possible to enjoy a meaningful holiday while staying within your budget. One of the best ways to control Christmas spending is to create a holiday budget before you start shopping. Look at how much money you can comfortably set aside and divide it among gifts, food, decorations, travel, and other holiday expenses. Having a specific amount to work with can make it easier to avoid impulse purchases and unnecessary spending. Making a gift list can also help keep your spending under control. Write down everyone you plan to buy for and decide how much you want to spend on each person. Remember that thoughtful gifts do not have to be expensive. Homemade treats, personalized items, books, framed photographs, or an experience shared together can often mean more than an expensive purchase. Shopping early can provide another opportunity to save money. Starting before the holiday rush gives you more time to compare
HoCoMo.com
Holiday meals can also be planned with your budget in mind. Instead of taking on the entire cost of a large family meal, consider making Christmas dinner a shared event. Family members and friends can each bring a dish, dessert, or beverage. Planning your menu in advance can also help you avoid buying more food than you need.

Decorations do not have to be replaced every year. Reusing decorations from previous Christmases can save considerable money, and simple homemade decorations can add a personal touch to your home. Natural materials such as pine branches, pinecones, and greenery can sometimes provide inexpensive seasonal decorations. Most importantly, remember what the holiday is really about. It is easy to become focused on buying the perfect gifts or creating a picture‑perfect Christmas, but the most valuable parts of the season often cost very little. Spending time together, watching favorite movies, baking cookies, playing games, taking a walk to see Christmas lights, or simply sharing a meal can create lasting memories without creating lasting debt. A budget‑friendly Christmas is not about taking away from the holiday. It is about being intentional with your money and focusing your spending on the things that matter most. By planning ahead, setting reasonable limits, shopping carefully, and embracing simple traditions, you can enjoy a joyful Christmas without starting the new year overwhelmed by holiday bills.
