WHERE DO MARYLAND’S BIRDS GO IN WINTER? plentiful. Birds that eat seeds, berries, and other foods available during winter may be able to remain in Maryland year-round. Not every bird leaves the state when temperatures fall. Northern cardinals, blue jays, Carolina chickadees, tufted titmice, and several species of woodpeckers are common year-round residents. These birds have developed ways to survive cold weather, including growing insulating feathers, storing food, and seeking shelter in dense vegetation or tree cavities. As autumn settles across Maryland and temperatures begin to drop, the familiar sounds of backyard birds gradually change. Some species that filled the trees with song throughout spring and summer seem to disappear, while others become more noticeable. The changing bird population is part of one of nature’s most remarkable annual events: seasonal migration. Each year, billions of birds travel between breeding and wintering grounds, sometimes covering thousands of miles. Maryland’s location along the Atlantic Flyway, a major migration corridor stretching along the East Coast, makes the state an important stopping point for birds traveling between northern breeding grounds and warmer southern destinations. Many of Maryland’s familiar summer birds leave when autumn arrives. Ruby-throated hummingbirds, for example, spend the warmer months visiting flowers and backyard feeders before migrating south to Mexico and Central America. Some cross the Gulf of Mexico during their journey, an extraordinary feat for a bird weighing only a few grams. Baltimore orioles, known for their brilliant orange and black feathers, also depart Maryland in late summer and early fall. These colorful songbirds generally spend the winter in Mexico, Central America, and northern South America, where food remains available throughout the colder months. Other familiar summer residents, including chimney swifts, barn swallows, and many species of warblers, travel south to find insects and other food sources that become scarce during Maryland’s winter. Although cold temperatures are often associated with migration, the primary motivation for many birds is food availability. Insect-eating species must travel to areas where their preferred food remains

White-throated sparrows are another familiar winter visitor, often scratching through fallen leaves in search of seeds. Their distinctive markings and recognizable songs make them favorites among backyard birdwatchers. Maryland’s waterways also attract large numbers of migrating waterfowl. The Chesapeake Bay provides critical winter habitat for ducks, geese, and swans. Species such as canvasbacks, buffleheads, and tundra swans travel from northern breeding areas to spend the winter feeding in the bay and surrounding wetlands.

For homeowners interested in supporting birds throughout the winter, a few simple steps can make a difference. Providing clean bird feeders stocked with appropriate seeds, maintaining a fresh water source, and planting native trees and shrubs can help birds find food and shelter. Leaving some fallen leaves and natural vegetation in place also supports insects and other small creatures that birds depend on for food. Bird migration is guided by a remarkable combination of environmental cues, including changing daylight, the Earth’s magnetic field, and celestial navigation. Many species return to the same general breeding areas year after year, sometimes traveling enormous distances with impressive accuracy. The next time a familiar bird disappears from your backyard, remember that it may be undertaking an extraordinary journey. And while some feathered neighbors head south for the winter, others are just arriving, making Maryland an interesting place to watch birds in every season.

Interestingly, winter also brings new visitors to Maryland. Dark-eyed juncos, sometimes called “snowbirds,” arrive from breeding grounds farther north or at higher elevations. These small, gray-andwhite birds are frequently seen hopping beneath backyard feeders during the colder months.

CELEBRATE LOCAL CREATIVITY AT LAUREN’S GARDEN SERVICE’S 5TH ANNUAL MAKER’S MARKET The holiday shopping season is almost here, and there’s no better way to find unique gifts while supporting local businesses than by visiting a community makers market. Small Business Saturday, traditionally held the Saturday after Thanksgiving, encourages shoppers to support independently owned businesses during one of the busiest shopping weekends of the year. Lauren’s Garden Service is extending the celebration through Sunday, giving visitors two full days to explore the market and find something special. Unlike shopping at large retailers, visiting a makers market offers an opportunity to connect with the people who create the products. Each handmade item represents an artist’s time, imagination, and craftsmanship. Whether shoppers are searching for holiday presents, something special for their homes, or a little treat for themselves, a local makers market provides an alternative to mass-produced merchandise. The event also highlights the importance of supporting small businesses and independent artists. When shoppers purchase locally made goods, they help sustain creative entrepreneurs, strengthen the regional economy, and encourage a thriving community of artisans. Lauren’s Garden Service and its sister store Cultivate Garden & Goods specialize in native gardening, plants, and gifts inspired by nature. Hosting a makers market provides another way to bring people together around an appreciation for creativity, nature, and locally owned businesses. The timing couldn’t be better for holiday shoppers. With Thanksgiving weekend marking the unofficial beginning of the holiday shopping season, the market offers an opportunity to get a head start on gift buying while enjoying a more relaxed, personal shopping experience. Visitors can make an afternoon of exploring the nursery and shops, meeting local makers, and discovering gifts that aren’t likely to be found in big-box stores. The Fifth Annual Small Business Saturday Maker’s Market will take place Saturday, November 28, and Sunday, November 29, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Lauren’s Garden Service and Cultivate Store, 13554 Triadelphia Road, Ellicott City. This holiday season, consider shopping small, celebrating local talent, and giving gifts with a personal touch.

THE BENEFITS OF DECLUTTERING

10/28/26H

AUTO PARTS & ACCESSORIES

that might otherwise remain hidden behind stored possessions. Decluttering may even encourage better spending habits. Sorting through accumulated belongings often reveals forgotten purchases, duplicate items, and products that were rarely used. Recognizing these patterns can help people become more thoughtful about future purchases. Before buying something new, it’s worth considering whether it’s truly needed and where it will be stored.

One of the most noticeable benefits of decluttering is the sense of calm that comes from having an organized living space. Cluttered environments can create visual distractions and make it difficult to relax. When every surface is covered with papers, clothing, or miscellaneous household items, even simple tasks can feel overwhelming. Clearing unnecessary objects from living spaces can help create a more peaceful atmosphere and make a home feel more inviting. Decluttering can also save considerable time. Searching for misplaced keys, important documents, or frequently used household items can become a frustrating part of daily life. When belongings have designated places and storage areas aren’t overcrowded, it’s much easier to find what you need. An organized kitchen, for example, makes meal preparation more efficient, while a tidy closet can simplify getting dressed each morning. Another advantage is easier cleaning and home maintenance. Homes with fewer unnecessary belongings generally require less effort to dust, vacuum, and organize. Clear countertops and uncluttered floors make routine cleaning faster, leaving more time for enjoyable activities. Reducing clutter can also help homeowners identify maintenance issues, such as leaks or pest activity,

HoCoMo.com

Fortunately, decluttering doesn’t require an expensive organizing system or a complete household overhaul. Starting with one small area, such as a kitchen drawer, bathroom cabinet, or bedroom closet, can make the process manageable. Items can be sorted into categories based on whether they should be kept, donated, recycled, or discarded. Donating usable belongings is an especially rewarding part of the process. Clothing, furniture, books, and household goods that are no longer needed may be valuable to someone else. Local thrift stores, charitable organizations, and community donation programs often welcome gently used items, although it’s important to check their acceptance guidelines.

STAND-UP MULTICADES & COCKTAIL TABLES THE ULTIMATE HOME ARCADE GAME!

For sentimental belongings, decluttering can be more challenging. Family photographs, childhood keepsakes, and inherited objects often carry emotional significance. The goal doesn’t have to be eliminating everything. Instead, consider selecting a few meaningful pieces to display or preserve while letting go of items that no longer serve a purpose.

Maintaining an organized home is an ongoing process rather than a one-time project. Developing simple habits, such as putting things away immediately and regularly evaluating new purchases, can prevent clutter from building up again. Ultimately, decluttering isn’t about creating a perfectly organized home or owning as little as possible. It’s about making room for the things that matter most. By reducing unnecessary possessions, homeowners can create more functional spaces, simplify everyday responsibilities, and enjoy a greater sense of comfort in their surroundings.

10/14/16H

Most households accumulate more belongings than they actually need. Closets become crowded, drawers overflow, and garages gradually fill with items that haven’t been used in years. While it’s easy to overlook the growing piles of possessions, clutter can have a surprising impact on everyday life. Taking the time to organize and eliminate unnecessary belongings can create a more comfortable home, reduce stress, and make daily routines easier.

COMPLETE TREE CARE

One of the biggest advantages of planting trees in the fall is reduced stress on newly planted trees. During the summer, high temperatures and intense sunlight can cause trees to lose moisture rapidly through their leaves. Newly planted trees are especially vulnerable because their root systems haven’t yet expanded into the surrounding soil. As temperatures cool in autumn, trees generally require less water, making it easier for them to adjust to their new environment.

WHY FALL IS A GREAT TIME TO PLANT TREES

When most people think about gardening, spring is the season that comes to mind. However, fall is actually one of the best times of year to plant trees, particularly in Maryland and other regions with moderate autumn temperatures. The combination of cooler weather, warm soil, and increased rainfall creates favorable conditions for young trees to establish strong roots before the next growing season.

FREE ESTIMATES

Although trees may appear to stop growing as their leaves change color and fall, important activity continues underground. Roots can keep growing as long as soil temperatures remain favorable. By planting in the fall, homeowners give trees an opportunity to develop their root systems before the demands of spring growth begin. This head start can make trees better equipped to handle the heat and occasional drought conditions of the following summer. Fall weather also tends to make planting easier for homeowners. The soil is often more workable than it is during the frozen winter months, and cooler temperatures make digging and landscaping more comfortable. Autumn rainfall can help maintain soil moisture, although newly planted trees still require regular watering until the ground freezes.

Native trees are often excellent choices because they are adapted to regional growing conditions and provide valuable habitat for local wildlife. In Maryland, popular options include red maple, eastern redbud, serviceberry, and several varieties of oak. These trees can offer attractive foliage, spring flowers, shade, and food or shelter for birds and other animals. Proper planting techniques can make a significant difference in a tree’s long-term health. The planting hole should generally be two to three times wider than the root ball but no deeper than necessary to keep the root flare, where the trunk widens into the roots, at or slightly above ground level. Planting too deeply can interfere with healthy root development. After planting, homeowners should water thoroughly and spread a layer of organic mulch around the base of the tree. Mulch helps conserve moisture, moderate soil temperatures, and reduce competition from grass and weeds. However, it should be kept several inches away from the trunk to prevent excess moisture buildup and decay. In Maryland, early to mid-fall is generally ideal for planting many deciduous trees, allowing time for roots to establish before the ground freezes. Evergreens may benefit from earlier planting because they continue losing moisture through their foliage during winter. Planting a tree is an investment that can benefit a property for generations. Beyond enhancing curb appeal, mature trees provide shade, help manage stormwater, support wildlife, and can reduce summer cooling costs. For homeowners considering a landscaping project, fall offers an excellent opportunity to get started. With thoughtful species selection, proper planting, and consistent watering, a young tree planted this autumn could become a beautiful and lasting part of the landscape for decades to come.

Choosing the right tree is just as important as choosing the right planting season. Homeowners should consider the amount of sunlight available, soil drainage, mature tree size, and proximity to buildings, sidewalks, and overhead utility lines. A small sapling may look perfectly proportioned in a front yard today, but some species can eventually grow more than 60 feet tall.

HOW MARYLAND TOWNS GOT THEIR NAMES colonial port and political center, and its historic streets continue to reflect that heritage. Hagerstown takes its name from Jonathan Hager, a German immigrant who founded the community in 1762. Originally called Elizabeth Town in honor of Hager’s wife, the settlement eventually became known as Hagerstown. Its location along important transportation routes helped it develop into a major commercial center in western Maryland.

Frederick, one of Maryland’s best-known historic cities, was founded in 1745 and named for Frederick Calvert, the sixth Lord Baltimore, according to the traditional explanation. The city grew into an important commercial center, particularly as German settlers established farms and businesses throughout the surrounding region. Today, Frederick’s historic downtown preserves much of the architectural character that developed over generations. Annapolis, Maryland’s capital, has a distinctly royal connection. Originally known as Providence, the settlement was renamed Annapolis in 1694 in honor of Princess Anne, who later became Queen Anne of Great Britain. The name combines Anne’s name with the Greek word “polis,” meaning city. Annapolis eventually became an important

We’ll help you through the switch, from start to finish.

Rockville, the county seat of Montgomery County, has a name inspired by the natural landscape. The community was once known as Hungerford’s Tavern, after a local establishment that served travelers. In 1801, the name Rockville was adopted, reportedly reflecting the rocky terrain and streams found in the surrounding countryside. Ellicott City, located in Howard County, was named for the Ellicott family, whose flour mills helped establish the community as an important industrial center in the late 1700s. The town was originally called Ellicott’s Mills, reflecting the family’s successful milling operations along the Patapsco River. Its historic buildings and winding streets remain reminders of its industrial beginnings. Bowie, in Prince George’s County, was originally known as Huntington, a railroad community established in the 1870s. In 1880, the town was renamed in honor of Oden Bowie, a former Maryland governor who played an important role in developing the Baltimore and Potomac Railroad. These names are more than simple geographic labels. They preserve connections to Maryland’s earliest settlements, influential residents, natural features, and changing industries. The next time you pass a familiar town sign, consider the generations of history behind its name. You might discover that even the most ordinary-looking place has an extraordinary story to tell.

Every town has a story, and sometimes that story begins with its name. Throughout Maryland, communities have been named for historical figures, geographic features, early settlers, and even places across the Atlantic Ocean. Some names reflect the state’s colonial beginnings, while others offer clues about the industries and people that shaped local communities. Exploring the origins of Maryland town names provides a fascinating glimpse into the state’s rich history.
