THINGS TO DO IN MARYLAND DURING THE FALL HARVEST SEASON

Fall is also an excellent time to explore a Maryland farmers market. While people sometimes associate farmers markets with summer, the harvest season brings its own impressive selection of locally grown food. Apples, pears, pumpkins, winter squash, sweet potatoes, greens, cauliflower and other cool‑weather crops begin filling market stands. You may also discover locally produced honey, jams, baked goods, meats, cheeses and other products that make it easy to prepare a Maryland‑inspired fall meal. Fall is one of the best times of year to explore Maryland. As summer heat gives way to crisp mornings and colorful leaves, farms and communities across the state celebrate the harvest season with everything from apple picking and pumpkin patches to corn mazes, farmers markets and fall festivals. Whether you want a relaxing afternoon in the country or an activity‑filled weekend with the family, Maryland offers plenty of ways to enjoy the season. Apple picking is a classic fall tradition, and Maryland’s orchards produce numerous varieties throughout the season. Depending on when you visit, you may find favorites such as Honeycrisp, Gala, Fuji, Jonathan and Pink Lady ready for picking. Many orchards allow visitors to head into the fields and pick their own fruit, turning an ordinary grocery purchase into a memorable fall outing. Once you get home, those apples can become pies, crisps, applesauce, cider or simply a fresh seasonal snack. Pumpkin picking is another essential part of Maryland’s fall harvest. Farms throughout the state open their pumpkin patches during September and October, giving visitors an opportunity to search for the perfect pumpkin. Some people are looking for large pumpkins to carve for Halloween, while others choose smaller pumpkins and colorful gourds for decorating. Picking pumpkins directly from a farm is also a great way to support Maryland agriculture. For families looking for a little more adventure, many farms turn harvest season into a full day of entertainment. Corn mazes are especially popular, ranging from simple mazes designed for young children to elaborate challenges that can take quite a while to complete. Depending on the farm, visitors may also find hayrides, farm animals, playgrounds, giant slides, games, food stands and other attractions.

Those who enjoy cooking can make the harvest season an event at home. Try preparing a meal centered around ingredients grown or produced in Maryland. Roast seasonal vegetables, make homemade apple crisp or experiment with different varieties of winter squash. Buying ingredients from local growers can also introduce you to foods you might otherwise overlook at the supermarket. Maryland’s harvest festivals provide another opportunity to celebrate the season. Communities and farms frequently organize fall events featuring live music, craft vendors, food, children’s activities and agricultural demonstrations. These celebrations can be a fun way to learn more about farming while supporting local businesses and enjoying a beautiful autumn day. A scenic drive can make almost any harvest activity even better. Western Maryland is especially well known for dramatic fall foliage, but colorful autumn scenery can be found throughout Central Maryland and along the state’s rural roads. Combining a drive with a visit to an orchard, farm stand or pumpkin patch creates an easy day trip. Even something as simple as visiting a roadside farm stand can become part of the fall experience. Stop for fresh apples, pumpkins, cider or locally grown vegetables and take a few minutes to appreciate where your food comes from. Maryland’s fall harvest season doesn’t last long, which is part of what makes it special. Whether you pick apples, wander through a corn maze, visit a farmers market or simply cook a meal with locally grown ingredients, celebrating the harvest is a wonderful way to enjoy autumn while supporting the farmers and communities that make Maryland unique.

century, they discovered that pumpkins were particularly well suited for carving. Pumpkins were plentiful, much larger than turnips, and relatively easy to hollow out. Gradually, the orange pumpkin replaced the smaller root vegetables traditionally used to make lanterns.

Pumpkin carving is one of the most recognizable traditions of Halloween. Every October, families visit pumpkin patches, choose the perfect pumpkins, and transform them into glowing jack‑o’‑lanterns. While carving pumpkins is now a fun seasonal activity, the tradition has a surprisingly long history that began centuries before pumpkins became associated with Halloween. The origins of the jack‑o’‑lantern can be traced to Ireland and other parts of the British Isles. Long before people were carving pumpkins, they carved vegetables such as turnips and rutabagas. During the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, which marked the transition from the harvest season into winter, people believed the boundary between the living and spirit worlds became easier to cross. Over time, carved vegetables containing candles or glowing embers became associated with supernatural folklore and the season. One famous Irish folktale tells the story of a man known as Stingy Jack. According to the legend, Jack repeatedly tricked the Devil and eventually found himself unable to enter either heaven or hell after his death. He was supposedly left to wander the darkness carrying a glowing coal inside a carved turnip. People began referring to the mysterious figure as “Jack of the Lantern,” which eventually became “jack‑o’‑lantern.” When Irish immigrants brought their Halloween traditions to North America during the 19th

Pumpkin carving eventually became less about frightening away wandering spirits and more about celebrating Halloween. Families began carving everything from traditional scary faces to funny expressions, animals, favorite characters and elaborate works of art. For many people, the activity itself is just as important as the finished jack‑o’‑lantern. Today, choosing a pumpkin can be an autumn tradition of its own. Families often spend a day visiting a local pumpkin patch or fall festival before bringing their pumpkins home to carve. Cutting open the top, scooping out the seeds and designing a face creates an activity that people of different generations can enjoy together. Pumpkin seeds can even be cleaned, seasoned and roasted for a seasonal snack.

Modern pumpkin carving has also become remarkably creative. Specialized carving kits, patterns and stencils make it possible to create detailed designs that would have been difficult with the simple triangular eyes and jagged smiles of traditional jack‑o’‑lanterns. Some professional pumpkin artists create intricate portraits and sculptures that turn ordinary pumpkins into temporary works of art. Despite all the changes, the glowing jack‑o’‑lantern remains a symbol of Halloween. Whether it features a frightening face or a cheerful smile, a carved pumpkin sitting on a front porch connects today’s Halloween celebrations with traditions that have evolved over generations. What began with carved root vegetables and old folklore has become a beloved fall ritual centered on creativity, family and seasonal fun.

HOW TO TRAVEL LIKE A FOODIE Cantonese and amazing Korean‑American chefs cooking the foods of their home, and adopted city,” says Matt Rodbard, an award‑winning food and culture writer and editor of TASTE. Use slow travel principles to anchor your itinerary around regional celebrations, such as harvest and food and wine festivals. 3. Anchor travel around food‑centric festivals

One of the best parts of vacation is experiencing local foods, fresh ingredients and related customs, but how do you find authentic spots and dishes? According to people who work in the food business, there are a few tricks to uncovering great culinary moments while traveling. 1. Eat the season: Align your trip with the harvest Epicureans don’t just ask where to eat; they ask when. Timing your travels to the harvest or what’s in season offers a more flavorful experience. “I tell people to plan around produce, from spring rhubarb and asparagus to the last autumn apples and winter squash ‑ even maple tapping season,” says cookbook author and baker Martin Sorge. “Check with local farmers to confirm when peak season is to plan your trip, and remember Northern Michigan can be several weeks behind other areas of the Midwest. You’ll find the best Northern Michigan cherries mid‑to‑late July, for example.”

“There’s an incredible sense of pride, community and connection to nature in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, so I aim to let the land tell the story and guide the menu by using hyperlocal, seasonal produce and foraged goods,” says Carrie Masters, chef and owner of Bird & Toad in Marquette. “My favorite meals are often pieced together from local purveyors, and they are always best enjoyed out in nature right where the ingredients came from.”

Authentic food cultures thrive within regional enclaves. Seek out areas where immigrant populations have come to anchor the local cuisine or create fresh fusion experiences, like Detroit‑area Levantine bakeries and cafés. “Detroit has become like a mini‑Los Angeles, with pockets of truly surprising and authentic international cuisine and fusions, like Mexican,

Rather than rushing between scattered dining spots, use slow travel principles to anchor your itinerary around regional celebrations, such as harvest and food and wine festivals, like the November Art Coast Food and Wine Festival in Saugatuck Douglas. These events allow visitors to sample a wide range of local flavors at their peak. 4. Be part of the meal prep True food travel means getting your hands dirty. Seek out u‑pick farms and orchards, foraging walks with resort chefs or creamery workshops, like those offered throughout Michigan’s wine coast at properties like Black Star Farms. Participating in the harvest or subsequent meal preparation builds a tangible connection to the land and makes the final dish more rewarding. “The best culinary experiences give you a sense of place,” says Danny Simmons, director of culinary and events at Black Star Farms. “We believe in the idea that what grows together, goes together, and we build our food and wine experiences around what Northern Michigan is giving us in that moment alongside wines grown and made here. Through experiences like our hands‑on cooking classes, dinners and other culinary programs, we invite guests to be part of that connection rather than simply observe it, gaining a deeper understanding of the land, the season and what pairs well together.” 5. Embrace unexpected and interesting pairings Instead of getting that wine you always get, lean into the local beverage terroir. Pair a funky Michigan washed‑rind cheese with a dry heirloom hard cider, or local Great Lakes whitefish with a crisp Old Mission Peninsula Riesling. Local wines, beers and aged ingredients are truly an artifact of the landscape. Keep these tips in mind as you plan your next vacation. You don’t need to work in the culinary industry to uncover vibrant flavors and authentic experiences when traveling.

KEEPING HOWARD COUNTY COMFORTABLE

exactly that for nearly 50 years.

When Maryland weather decides to go from “open the windows” to “turn on the air conditioning” practically overnight, it helps to know someone who can keep your home comfortable. For Howard County families, Ron Air Heating & Air Conditioning has been doing

Based in Dayton, Ron Air is a family-owned and operated HVAC company serving Howard County and surrounding communities. The business was founded by Ronald “Ronney” Hines in 1977 after he earned master licenses in HVAC and electrical work and gained experience in the heating and air-conditioning industry. Today, Ron Air Heating & Air Conditioning continues that local, family-business tradition, offering installation, maintenance and repair for heating and cooling systems. Services include air conditioning, heat pumps and gas furnaces, along with indoor air-quality solutions designed to keep homes comfortable through steamy Maryland summers and those “why is it this cold?” winter mornings.

Perhaps what makes Ron Air stand out most is its longevity. Plenty has changed in Howard County since the late 1970s, but the company has remained locally rooted and family operated. In fact, Ronney once described his wife, son and granddaughter as working alongside him in the business—a true multigenerational operation. That local connection extends beyond service calls. Ron Air has also appeared among supporters of Howard County 4-H programs, reflecting the Hines family’s longstanding ties to the organization and community. So whether your air conditioner quits during an August heat wave or your furnace chooses the coldest morning of the year to misbehave, Ron Air offers something especially valuable: experience, local roots and neighbors who know their way around a thermostat. Sometimes comfort really is close to home.

THE IMPORTANCE OF DOG GROOMING pollen, odors, and other substances on their skin and fur. An occasional bath with an appropriate dog shampoo can keep the coat clean and make the dog more comfortable. Dogs with certain skin conditions may need a bathing schedule recommended by their veterinarian.

Dog grooming is often associated with fluffy breeds that need regular haircuts, but grooming is important for every dog. Even short‑haired dogs and breeds whose coats rarely need trimming benefit from a consistent grooming routine. Grooming helps keep dogs clean and comfortable, supports their overall health, and gives owners an opportunity to notice potential problems before they become more serious. Regular brushing is one of the simplest and most beneficial parts of dog grooming. Even if a dog’s hair never needs to be cut, loose and dead hair still needs to be removed. Brushing helps control shedding and keeps excess fur from ending up on furniture, clothing, and floors. It also removes dirt and debris that can become trapped in the coat. Brushing can benefit the skin as well. Moving a brush through the coat helps distribute the dog’s natural oils, which can keep the skin and coat healthy. Depending on the breed and coat type, brushing may also prevent tangles or compacted undercoat from developing. Dogs with thick double coats can shed an impressive amount of fur even though they may never need a traditional haircut. Grooming also provides an opportunity to check a dog’s skin. As you brush or bathe your dog, you may notice lumps, bumps, rashes, scabs, irritated areas, ticks, fleas, or other changes that might otherwise be hidden beneath the coat. Discovering something unusual early gives you the chance to consult a veterinarian if necessary. Bathing is another important part of grooming, although how often a dog needs a bath varies. Dogs naturally pick up dirt, allergens,

A complete grooming routine extends beyond the coat. Nail care is especially important. When a dog’s nails become too long, walking can become uncomfortable and the nails can affect how the paws contact the ground. Severely overgrown nails may even curl or become damaged. Regular trimming or grinding helps keep nails at a comfortable length. The ears also deserve attention. Regularly looking at your dog’s ears can help you notice redness, unusual discharge, strong odors, excessive wax, or signs that the ears are bothering them. Ear‑cleaning needs vary by dog, so owners should follow veterinary recommendations rather than cleaning unnecessarily or inserting anything deep into the ear canal.

NO GAMES, NO GIMMICKS. We’ll help you through the switch, from start to finish.

Dental care is another grooming habit that can have significant health benefits. Plaque and tartar accumulate on dogs’ teeth just as they do on human teeth. Regular brushing with toothpaste made specifically for dogs, along with professional veterinary dental care when needed, can help protect a dog’s teeth and gums. Grooming can even strengthen the relationship between dogs and their owners. Gentle brushing, paw handling, and routine inspections teach dogs that being touched and examined is a normal part of life. This can make veterinary appointments and future grooming easier, especially when these habits begin while a dog is young. Ultimately, grooming is about much more than appearance. A dog doesn’t need a fancy haircut to benefit from regular care. Brushing, bathing, nail trimming, dental care, and routine skin, paw, and ear checks all contribute to a dog’s comfort and well‑being. A clean coat may be the most visible result, but the greatest benefit is helping your dog stay healthy, comfortable, and cared for throughout their life.

3. Give family and friends an easy way to help Birthdays, holidays and milestones often bring more toys and gifts than a child can use. Let grandparents, relatives and close friends know that contributing toward future education is another meaningful option. Even occasional gifts can complement what parents are already saving and help loved ones feel connected to a child’s long‑term goals.

The good news is that families do not need a perfect prediction. They need a practical plan that can grow and adapt along with their child. These five steps can help parents focus less on choosing a path today and more on creating options for tomorrow. 1. Start with possibilities, not one destination Instead of building a plan around a single school or career, think broadly about the kinds of learning your child may need after high school. That could include a two‑year or four‑year degree, career and technical education, industry credentials or another eligible training program. A broader mindset can reduce the pressure to have every detail figured out now. 2. Turn a big goal into a repeatable habit Future education costs can feel overwhelming when viewed as one large number. A more approachable strategy is to choose a contribution into a savings vehicle such as a 529 Investment Plan that fits your current budget and make it consistent. Consider automating deposits after payday, redirecting part of a tax refund or adding a portion of a raise. The amount can change as your circumstances change. The habit is what creates momentum. The elementary school years can be an especially valuable time to begin because

HoCoMo.com

families often have more years to save, allowing small contributions to accumulate over time.

Ask a young child what they want to be when they grow up, and the answer may change by the week. Even older students are exploring a rapidly evolving mix of careers, credentials and training options. For parents, that uncertainty can make planning feel intimidating. How do you prepare when you cannot know whether your child will choose a university, a technical program, an apprenticeship or a career that does not exist yet?

YOUR CHILD’S FUTURE IS UNPREDICTABLE

Today’s children may pursue careers and education pathways that look very different from the ones their parents knew. These five practical steps can help families keep more possibilities within reach.

Since 1972

4. Check your plan once a year Choose one annual reminder, such as your child’s birthday or the start of a new school year, to review your progress. Ask whether the contribution still fits your budget, update family information and consider whether your goals have changed. A short yearly check‑in can help keep the plan current without making it another monthly task. 5. Choose tools that leave room for change When comparing education savings options, look beyond the name of the account. Ask where the funds may be used, what expenses may qualify, whether the beneficiary can be changed and what happens if plans shift. Understanding those choices from the start can help families select an approach that supports multiple routes after high school. For Miami parent Ann Fonts, opening an education savings account wasn’t about having all the answers. It was about getting started. “Like a lot of parents, I thought I had more time,” Fonts said. “Then one day I was registering my son for kindergarten and wondering where the years had gone. We didn’t start with a large amount. We just started with what we could afford and made it part of our routine. For me, the biggest lesson was that you don’t have to be perfect. You just have to start.” As children grow, their interests and ambitions will change. A flexible plan gives families room to respond without waiting for certainty before they begin. The most important first step is not choosing the perfect path or saving the perfect amount. It is starting with what is realistic, building a routine and revisiting the plan over time. Those actions can help turn an unpredictable future into one filled with more opportunity. Whether today’s dream is becoming a teacher, welder, nurse, entrepreneur, engineer or a career that hasn’t been invented yet, parents don’t need to know exactly where their child is headed to help them prepare. Starting early and taking manageable steps today can help keep more opportunities within reach tomorrow.

Each year, around 20 children ranging in age from 6‑12 years old attended the school.
