Mother’s Day is more than a date on the calendar—it’s a moment to pause and recognize the people who shape our lives in quiet, enduring ways. Celebrated in many countries around the world, the holiday is dedicated to honoring mothers, grandmothers, and maternal figures for their love, care, and influence.

Origins and History

The modern version of Mother’s Day has roots in the early 20th century in the United States. It was largely driven by Anna Jarvis, who wanted to create a day to honor her own mother’s legacy of compassion and community work. In 1914, President Woodrow Wilson officially declared Mother’s Day a national holiday, to be observed on the second Sunday of May.

Interestingly, celebrations of motherhood date back much further. Ancient civilizations like the Greeks and Romans held festivals dedicated to mother goddesses, while in the UK, “Mothering Sunday” has been observed since the 16th century.

How It’s Celebrated

Traditions vary widely, but the heart of the holiday remains the same: appreciation. Common ways people celebrate include:

•Writing heartfelt cards or letters

•Preparing meals or taking mothers out to restaurants

•Spending quality time together

In today’s digital age, celebrations have expanded to include video calls, social media tributes, and even virtual family gatherings.

The Meaning Behind the Day

While gifts and gestures are common, the deeper meaning of Mother’s Day lies in gratitude. It’s an opportunity to acknowledge emotional labor, sacrifices, and the often unseen efforts that go into nurturing families and communities.

For some, the day can also be complex. It may bring up feelings of loss, distance, or difficult relationships. Increasingly, people are recognizing the importance of inclusivity— honoring all forms of caregiving and support, not just traditional motherhood.

A Modern Perspective

Today, Mother’s Day continues to evolve. Many people are shifting away from purely commercial celebrations and focusing more on personal, meaningful expressions of thanks.

Whether it’s a simple conversation, a handwritten note, or a shared memory, the most impactful gestures are often the most sincere.

Final Thoughts

Mother’s Day serves as a reminder to appreciate the people who nurture and support us—not just on one day, but throughout the year. However you choose to celebrate, the essence of the holiday lies in recognition, respect, and love.

ONLY THE BEST FOR BRUNCH

(Culinary.net) Nearly nothing is better than a perfectly planned brunch. This delicious, sweet recipe could be the cherry on top of your brunch bash.

As you see your friends and family members take their first bites, you will see their faces light up with delight as they devour this Cranberry Strata. It’s made with fluffy, baked French bread, smooth cream cheese, sweet and tangy maple syrup and, of course, dried cranberries.

This recipe is easy to make and even easier to eat. With only a handful of ingredients and just a few simple steps, this dish is one you can quickly whip up when you’re in a pinch.

Plus, the end result will have you and brunch goers asking, “Why is this so good?” It’s wholesome, rich and delicious. With two layers of bread sandwiched around layers of cranberries and cream cheese, this dish is almost certain to be a new brunch favorite.

Start by mixing eggs, maple syrup and milk together in a bowl. Then in a baking dish, add a layer of French bread and top it with chunks of cream cheese. Spread the cranberries on top.

Then layer on your second sheet of French bread. Next pour your egg mixture over top of everything, making sure the bread is absorbing the flavors. Top with a dash of cinnamon and bake.

Pull it out of the oven and serve warm. You will have a gooey, creamy, melt‑in‑your‑mouth strata on your hands.

This dish is wonderful for brunch, however, it is versatile enough to be served as a family dessert, scrumptious breakfast or treat on a cold, winter day.

Between the dairy, grains and sprinkle of fruit, this dish is a star for any occasion throughout the year.

1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon or nutmeg

In greased, 2‑quart, rectangular baking dish, arrange about 4 cups bread pieces.

Cut cream cheese into 8‑10 slices and arrange over bread chunks. Sprinkle cranberries over bread chunks. Top with remaining bread pieces.

In medium bowl, beat together eggs, milk and 1/3 cup maple syrup. Pour over bread. Sprinkle with ground cinnamon or nutmeg.

With back of spoon or spatula, lightly press down to saturate bread with egg mixture. Cover and chill up to 24 hours in refrigerator.

(Feature Impact) As you get older, your risk for some eye diseases may increase. However, there are steps you can take to keep your eyes healthy – and it starts with taking care of your overall health.

Set yourself up for a lifetime of seeing your best with these eight tips from the experts at the National Eye Institute in honor of Healthy Vision Month:

1. Find an eye doctor you trust.

Many eye diseases don’t have any early symptoms, so you could have a problem and not know it. An eye doctor can help you stay on top of your eye health. Find an eye doctor you trust by asking friends and family if they like their doctors. You can also check with your health insurance plan to find eye doctors near you.

2. Ask how often you need a dilated eye exam.

Getting a dilated eye exam is the single best thing you can do for your eye health. It’s the only way to find eye diseases early, when they’re easier to treat – and before they cause vision loss. Your eye doctor will decide how often you need an exam based on your risk for eye diseases.

3. Add more movement to your day.

Physical activity can lower your risk for health conditions that can affect your vision, like diabetes and high blood pressure. If you have trouble finding time for physical activity, try building it into other activities. Walk around while you’re on the phone, do push‑ups or stretch while you watch TV or dance while you’re doing chores. Anything that gets your heart pumping counts.

4. Get your family talking about eye health history.

Some eye diseases – like glaucoma and age‑related macular degeneration – can run in families. While it may not be the most exciting topic of conversation, talking about your family health history can help everyone stay healthy. The next time you’re chatting with relatives, ask if anyone knows about eye problems in your family. Be sure to share what you learn with your eye doctor to see if you need to take steps to lower your risk.

5. Step up your healthy eating game.

Eating healthy foods helps prevent health conditions – like diabetes or high blood pressure – that can put you at risk for eye problems. Eat right for your sight by adding more eye‑healthy foods to your plate, such as dark, leafy greens like spinach, kale and collard greens, and fish high in omega‑3 fatty acids like halibut, salmon or tuna.

6. Make a habit of wearing your sunglasses –even on cloudy days.

The sun’s UV rays can not only harm your skin, but the same goes for your eyes. However, wearing sunglasses that block 99‑100% of both UVA and UVB radiation can protect your eyes and lower your risk for cataracts.

7. Stay on top of long‑term health conditions like diabetes and high blood pressure.

Diabetes and high blood pressure can increase your risk for some eye diseases, like glaucoma. If you have diabetes or high blood pressure, ask your doctor about steps you can take to manage your condition and lower your risk of vision loss.

8. If you smoke, make a plan to quit.

Quitting smoking is good for your entire body, including your eyes. Kicking the habit can help lower your risk for eye diseases like macular degeneration and cataracts. Quitting smoking is hard, but it’s possible – and a plan can help.

Test your eye health knowledge with a quick quiz and find more vision resources at nei.nih. gov/hvm.

GENERAL NOTES

WASHINGTON NATION OPERA PRESENTS WEST SIDE STORY May 8‑10, Lyric Baltimore, 140 West Mount Royal Avenue, Baltimore, Maryland. Experience the Leonard Bernstein, Stephen Sondheim, Arthur Laurents, and Jerome Robbins classic on a grand scale. Love divided by a turf war... chemistry that sizzles... tragedy that looms. When four of the greatest American icons of the 20th century took on Shakespeare’s story of star‑crossed lovers, it became a Broadway blockbuster. Now, the story and spectacle of West Side Story meets the scale and power of opera for a retelling you won’t forget! Artistic Director Francesca Zambello’s “expansive” (Chicago Tribune) production follows young lovers Maria and Tony as tensions rise between the Sharks and the Jets. Your favorite musical moments are here‑from the tender “Tonight” to the enduring “Somewhere”‑performed by a world‑class cast and the Washington National Opera Orchestra. Visit https://www.lyricbaltimore.com/events/detail/wno for more information and/or tickets.
