COMBATING CRACKED CONCRETE: CAUSES OF FAILING CONCRETE & HOW TO SOLVE THEM

(Family Features) Concrete is a strong, durable and easy‑to‑maintain material that is popular for driveways, walkways, patios and more. Like most materials, though, it can inevitably wear down over time.

When signs of failure show themselves, homeowners commonly face two options: repair or replace. Prepare and plan for eventual concrete deterioration with this advice from the experts at Thrasher Foundation Repair, which has served more than 150,000 families over the last 50 years.

Reasons for Concrete Failure

Natural elements like weather, water and earth are often to blame, but man‑made mistakes can also contribute to concrete failure.

Poorly compacted soil: When a home is constructed, a lot of soil is moved around and put back in place. This often results in loose, poorly compacted soil, which allows water to seep in, saturate and dry out. The constant expansion and contraction can create voids beneath the concrete, which it eventually sinks into.

Weather: During hot weather, concrete expands and causes pressure throughout the slab, often resulting in cracks. Conversely, during cold weather, the moisture in the ground freezes and can cause the slab to shrink, causing concrete to lift, heave and crack.

Excessive weight: Concrete is strong but not indestructible. Excessively heavy objects, like snow, can cause cracking.

Shrinkage: When concrete is installed, water is used to facilitate mixing and pouring. As concrete cures, excess water evaporates and causes a reduction in concrete volume, sometimes leading to cracking.

Defects: Improper installation or a poorly prepared concrete mix may lead to a weak slab that’s prone to cracking.

Signs of Concrete Failure

Identifying failure can help you address issues before they get out of hand. One of the most common signs is cracking ‑ while a few hairline cracks that aren’t actively growing

aren’t typically a problem, larger cracks that spread can affect drainage, aesthetics and structural integrity.

If you notice water collecting in areas following heavy rain, that may indicate a soil issue that can lead to concrete failure. Pitting, flaking and staining are also signs of damaged concrete. Uneven surfaces or sinking concrete are serious signs that concrete slabs are struggling with external factors that need to be addressed.

Options for Addressing Concrete Failure

When homeowners notice signs of failure in their driveways, sidewalks or patios, they often assume replacement is the only option. However, concrete repair can revitalize slabs without a full replacement, typically at a lower price.

Repair: New technology makes repairing concrete less invasive, more affordable and quicker than total replacement. Consider Thrasher Foundation Repair’s PolyLevel process, which refers to a system using a two‑part polyurethane polymer to fill voids and lift concrete slabs to their original position. It’s injected through a pencil eraser‑sized hole and expands into a structural foam that compacts the soil. Quick, noninvasive and aesthetically pleasing, it’s a fast installation process with a curing time of 15‑20 minutes so the surface can be used the same day. This repair process is recommended for cracks, settled and unlevel slabs or sunken steps.

“Repairing concrete, rather than full replacement, can save homeowners as much as 50‑80%, depending on square footage,” said Dan Thrasher, CEO of Thrasher Foundation Repair. “It’s often a more economical solution that provides peace of mind, visual appeal and long‑lasting results.”

Staining: After a repair, slabs may appear mismatched. Staining concrete adds visual appeal while helping to prevent pitting, flaking, cracking and moisture‑related issues.

Replacement: As a long, disruptive and inconvenient process, full slab replacement can be overwhelming, both in terms of time and money. Some situations do call for full slab replacement, however, such as concrete older than 30 years, deep cracks and large potholes or a poorly installed base.

When choosing the right way to address concrete failure, it’s important to consider your time and budget. When in doubt, contact a professional who can walk you through the process by visiting GoThrasher.com.

(BPT) Solar generators are more than just an insurance policy for emergency situations. In addition to keeping your refrigerator humming and the lights on during a power outage, a portable solar generator offers clean, renewable energy on the go, providing a gateway to outdoor freedom.

With a solar generator, you can enjoy a latte at sunrise, host a spontaneous backyard movie night or blend a refreshing cocktail or mocktail while you dance on the beach, without ever worrying about running out of power. It’s the simplest way to enjoy the great outdoors and incorporate the indoor creature comforts you’re used to.

Jackery solar generators bring modern convenience to every outdoor adventure, with a solution for every expedition you can dream of.

The backyard or RV adventure

Imagine a movie night in your backyard or air conditioning in the RV. For those who want to power a backyard party or an extended RV trip, the Jackery Solar Generator 5000 Plus makes it possible.

This solar generator is a true replacement for its gas counterpart, offering the same amount of power without fume emissions, noise or fuel replacements. Plus, the built in wheels and handle provide easy portability, and the smart app lets you monitor and control power from your phone without having to leave the firepit.

Using this solar powered generator, you can turn your backyard into a resort. Confidently run an electric grill, string lights, a projector, speakers and a mini fridge all from a single unit without a single extension cord running to your home.

Or, if you’re planning a road trip, this RV companion allows you to avoid extra gas station stops to fill up on generator fuel. Simply plug into an RV hookup, keep the AC running on a hot night, and charge at a trailhead on the way home.

The memorable tailgate or campsite adventure

If you’re a regular tailgate host or want to turn your campsite into a festive basecamp, the

Jackery HomePower 3600 Plus can bring the party to a parking lot or campground.

Find the best tailgate parking and easily set up a TV, sound system, electric grill and small refrigerator. Now, you can watch the game in style while enjoying a cold drink and making burgers and hot dogs for friends and family as you cheer your team on.

If you want to be the talk of the park, bring this solar powered generator while camping, and invite your neighbors for a movie night under the stars, a dance party around the fire or a cookout where the only thing anyone will smell is the aroma of perfectly grilled food without a whiff of gas. It also comes with a dedicated 30A RV port, so you can plug directly into your camper or trailer and power lights, appliances and electronics without a single adapter.

Best of all, you won’t have to worry about charging or performing maintenance on your generator before your tailgate or camping trip. Thanks to Jackery’s ZeroDrain technology, the HomePower 3600 Plus can sit quietly in your garage all year and still retain 95% charge, so you’ll have one less task to check off your party to do list.

The last minute, spontaneous adventure

The sun is shining and the beach is calling, so there’s no time to waste. Luckily, the lightweight Jackery Explorer 2000 v2 is the perfect grab and go portable energy solution that you can toss in the trunk.

As the lightest 2 kilowatt per hour power station on the market (weighing in at just 39.5 pounds), you’ll be able to rethink where you can go and what you can do when you get there. Whether you’re loading up the car for a last minute beach trip, camping weekend or picnic in the park, you’ll have enough power to play tunes on the beach, create a workspace at a campsite or use a real coffee maker on a road trip.

If you forget to charge your power station, don’t worry. The Explorer 2000 v2 goes from empty to ready in under two hours, so you can answer the call of the wild, even during a late Friday afternoon. Plus, the whisper quiet operation means that you won’t disturb your local campers or beach goers.

Prepared for emergencies and adventures, whenever, wherever

You may have bought it for a blackout, but a solar generator is your key to unlocking everyday fun and freedom outdoors at home, on the road and in nature. No matter where you roam, you’ll have clean, sustainable energy to power your adventures. Visit Jackery.com to explore the full lineup and find the generator that fits your outdoor journey.

Spring cleaning is a perfect opportunity to reset, reorganize and make small changes that can help the planet. What’s more, these changes are simple to implement and can even earn you some extra cash.

Consider these five easy waste reduction tips from the experts at CalRecycle to help you jump into the season feeling organized and eco friendly.

1. Recycle Kitchen Waste

As you clear out expired or forgotten food, sort items for maximum impact:

Remove plastic and non compostable packaging and put spoiled or freezer burned food into your green bin. These scraps can be turned into compost and clean energy, helping cut methane emissions from landfills.

*Toss empty, dry recyclables, including condiment bottles, glass jars, metal cans and plastic food containers, into your blue bin.

2. Cash in Empty Beverage Containers

Cleaning out your home may uncover some empty or forgotten beverage containers. Empty out leftover liquids and take eligible beverage containers for soda, water, juice, wine and distilled spirits to your nearest recycling site for cash back. Every California Redemption Value (CRV) beverage container you recycle saves resources and puts money back in your pocket.

* If you’re short on time, donate your empty CRV beverage containers to your favorite nonprofit organization. Set up a separate bin just for eligible beverage containers and drop them off for donation when it’s full.

3. Give Clothes and Household Items a Second Life

Dig into your closets and shelves to see what you can repair, repurpose or donate. Fix a missing button, turn old fabric into cleaning rags or give gently used items to a local free exchange group or thrift store to reduce textile waste. Simple steps like these can keep usable items out of the landfill and help someone else put them to good use.

4. Declutter Paper and Electronics

Recycle junk mail, magazines and newspapers in your blue bin. Remove any plastic windows, wrap or stickers first. If you shred documents, place the shredded paper inside a paper bag before recycling. Bonus tip: Switching to digital statements and bills can help prevent paper clutter in the first place.

Old electronics and used batteries don’t belong in the trash. Gather them from drawers and cabinets then take them to an e waste drop off site or local household hazardous waste collection center for safe handling.

5. Refresh the Bathroom

When restocking soaps or cleaners, look for products that offer refillable containers (especially reusable glass and aluminum ones). It’s a simple way to cut down on plastic waste. When you finish bottles of shampoo, conditioner, soap or cleaning sprays, make sure they land in your recycling bin after you empty them out.

Swap out single use paper towels for washable cloths or rags. They’re reusable, durable and kinder to the environment.

TOP TRENDS FOR SWOON WORTHY CRUISE VACATIONS

(Feature Impact) From immersive dining to wellness at sea and elevated entertainment, cruise vacations are becoming some of the most experience‑rich trips travelers can take.

“Our industry has long been known for innovation, but what’s most compelling now is how that scale is being leveraged to invest in more immersive entertainment, wellness experiences and purpose‑driven exploration at destinations around the world,” said Chiara Giorgi, global event and brand director for Seatrade Cruise Global, the largest and longest‑running annual event of its kind serving every sector of the international cruise industry, including cruise lines, suppliers, travel agents and partners.

To take advantage of the evolution of the industry when planning your next vacation at sea, consider these emerging trends identified at the conference.

The Rise of Floating Wellness Retreats

Once upon a time, wellness meant spas, saunas and massages. Wellness in 2026 is much more luxurious and is deeply embedded into the cruise experience. For example, Cunard’s “Wellness at Sea” voyages integrate expert‑led fitness, nutrition, mindfulness and recovery programming, turning wellness into a structured, goal‑driven experience and elevating wellness as a core pillar of the onboard experience. Additional cruise lines, including Virgin Voyages and Celebrity Cruises, are also helping raise the bar on floating wellness. Think thermal suites, meditation spaces and sleep‑focused programming, along with wellness excursions and destination‑inspired spa rituals that extend the experience to the shore.

Dining Becomes the Experience

Dining has long been a key component of many cruises, but now, food and drink are evolving from a cruise staple to a central form of entertainment and cultural discovery. Cruise lines are investing in immersive dining

environments, destination‑inspired menus and beverage programs that connect guests more directly with the places they visit.

From location‑specific cuisine to interactive dining concepts and destination‑driven cocktail programs, F&B@Sea, Seatrade Cruise Global’s companion show, found culinary experiences are increasingly designed to be memorable punctuation points of the journey itself. Across the industry, cruise lines are investing heavily in culinary programs that blur the line between dining and entertainment. Tapping into the supper club trend, Royal Caribbean introduced the Empire Supper Club to turn dinner into a night out at sea, combining multi‑course menus, craft cocktails and live music for a full evening experience.

Exploring Expeditions with Purpose

Expedition travel is having more than a moment. It continues to grow as travelers seek deeper engagement with the natural world.

Leading the shift toward purpose‑driven explorations, operators such as National Geographic‑Lindblad Expeditions, long recognized for pioneering modern expedition travel, helped define this category through a model rooted in education, conservation and hands‑on exploration. Built on the belief that exploring the world can inspire people to care more deeply for it, expert‑led expeditions, such as kayaking among glaciers, participating in citizen science programs studying seabirds and learning directly from naturalists and scientists, place a strong emphasis on stewardship and real‑world learning.

Ships as Cultural Hubs

Entertainment at sea is expanding beyond traditional stage shows to include immersive productions, music residencies and partnerships with leading performing arts brands. For example, Holland America Line joined forces with The Verdon Fosse Legacy to debut “Fosse and Verdon, The Duet That Changed Broadway,” a live musical and multimedia tribute celebrating the revolutionary work of Bob Fosse and Gwen Verdon by bringing it to an international stage at sea for the first time.

As cruises continue to expand their global footprint, the Seatrade Cruise Global event positions itself not simply as a trade gathering, but as the central forum where trends are explored and defined. To learn more, visit seatradecruiseevents.com.

(Feature Impact) A well‑organized home isn’t about perfection. It’s about creating systems that make everyday life easier. When everything has a place, it’s simpler to maintain and keep clutter from creeping back in.

Choose furniture with hidden storage like ottomans or coffee tables

Keep remotes and small electronics in a designated tray or organizer

Bedroom

Your bedroom should feel like a sanctuary. Too much clutter can make it harder to relax and unwind. To maintain order:

Keep only essential items on nightstands

Rotate seasonal clothing to free up closet space

Use under‑bed storage bins for extra linens or off‑season clothes

Bathroom

Bathrooms often have limited space, so smart storage solutions are essential:

Experts often recommend tackling organization one room at a time, sorting items into categories like keep, donate or discard before finding the right storage solutions. If your home could use a refresh, start small and work your way through each space with these organization tips.

Entryway

A dedicated “drop zone” ensures items used daily don’t end up scattered throughout the house. However, the entryway is also one of the easiest places for clutter to pile up. To keep it tidy:

Install wall hooks for coats, bags and backpacks

Use a small bench or basket for shoes

Add a tray or bowl for keys, sunglasses and everyday essentials

Kitchen

One of the most‑used rooms in nearly every home, kitchen organization is key to making daily routines smoother. To stay organized:

Clear unnecessary items off countertops

Group pantry items by category, such as snacks, baking supplies and canned goods

Store rarely used appliances in cabinets or a pantry

Living Room

Living rooms often serve many purposes, from relaxing and entertaining to working or studying. The key is creating storage that blends seamlessly with your decor:

Use decorative baskets for blankets, magazines and toys

Keep countertops clear except for frequently used products

Separate backup supplies from daily‑use items, which should be stored for quick access

Use over‑the‑door organizers for towels or extra storage

Home Office

Whether you work remotely or simply manage household tasks, an organized office helps you stay focused. To improve productivity and reduce distractions:

Digitize or recycle unnecessary paperwork

Use desk trays and organizers for supplies

Create labeled folders or a filing system for important documents

Storage Areas

Garages, basements and storage rooms can quickly become catch‑all spaces. A little planning can make them much easier to manage:

Label bins for seasonal decorations, tools or sports equipment

Use shelving and wall storage to maximize vertical space

Keep an inventory list for larger storage areas

With a little planning and the right habits, a well‑organized home becomes easier to maintain. Find more ideas at eLivingtoday.com.

RETHINKING SUMMER TRAVEL:

(BPT) Looking to make the most of summer?

You don’t have to travel far to find an escape from your daily routine. Boating delivers an accessible vacation on demand, transforming an ordinary day into something memorable.

With rising travel costs, more Americans are exploring meaningful getaways closer to home and there’s no better way to do that than getting out on the water,” said Ellen Bradley, senior vice president and chief brand officer of Discover Boating. “When you’re on a boat, it’s an opportunity to unplug and reconnect with your loved ones, which is especially valuable in today’s always on, screen driven world.

There’s a scientific connection between water and happiness a major draw for the estimated 85 million Americans who take to the water each year, according to the National Marine Manufacturers Association. Time on the water increases serotonin, lowers cortisol and reduces stress, triggering a calm, restorative state of mind, where it’s easier to reset and recharge. When you’re on a boat, it’s an opportunity to unplug and reconnect with your loved ones, which is especially valuable in today’s always on, screen driven world. Ellen Bradley, Discover Boating

Whether it’s a spontaneous afternoon cruise, a fishing adventure or simply floating on the water with family and friends, boating makes a day feel well spent. It delivers the kind of experience that shapes how kids remember their summers growing up. In fact, according to recent research from Ipsos, 73% of prospective boat owners say their fondest childhood memories involve being on or near the water, with nearly half recalling those moments before age 13.

Boating is also more accessible than many people realize. You don’t have to own a boat to enjoy the lifestyle. From rentals to boat clubs, there are flexible options to fit a range of budgets and interests. Discover Boating makes it easy to get started and, for those considering ownership down the road, offers tools and resources to help navigate the next step.

Ready to dive in? Here are four ways to escape to the water close to home and make the most of your summer:

Test the waters by renting. Rental options are available on most waterways and provide hourly, daily or weekly access to a variety of boat types. Rental outfitters provide tutorials on operating a boat, share safety instructions and offer suggestions on destinations. Another option is peer to peer boat sharing, which allows you to rent directly from boat owners and often includes the option to hire a captain.

Join the club (literally). Boat clubs offer access to a variety of boats. You’ll pay a monthly fee and can book your time on the water and boat type online. Most boat clubs take care of docking, cleaning, maintenance and boat training courses, so all you have to do is show up and go.

Learn the ropes. If you’re new to boating or want to build confidence, taking a class is a great place to start. From on water training courses to watersports camps and youth programs, there are opportunities across the country to help you master the basics while having fun along the way.

Chart your course to ownership. Ready to find your dream boat? DiscoverBoating.com offers a boat finder tool and boat loan calculator to help you find an option that fits your budget and interests. If you’re considering buying a boat, make sure it is NMMA Certified. NMMA Certified boat and trailer manufacturers have been independently inspected to ensure they meet strict industry standards for safety and construction, as well as all federal regulations. Look for the NMMA Certified sticker near the helm of a boat.

Visit DiscoverBoating.com to learn more and start planning your next adventure on the water. You can tag @DiscoverBoating and use #SeeYouOutHere to share your summer boating adventures.

Traveling with your pup does require some preparation. To ensure a successful and stress free journey with your four legged friend, check out these five helpful tips.

1. Safety first!

If you haven’t already, invest in a pet seat belt, car seat or travel crate so your dog can travel comfortably and safely. Not only will these safety products keep your pup safe, but they also prevent your pet from distracting you while driving. Find dog seat belts and more at Chewy. com. You can also use these Chewy dog seat belts, car seats and crates for everyday trips around town after your vacation.

2. Pack a travel kit

Put together a travel kit with your pet’s essentials. A travel kit should include items to help keep your furry companion comfortable, happy and safe while on vacation.

Besides water, food, treats, bowls and waste bags, make sure to include your dog’s favorite toys, bedding and grooming supplies. Don’t

forget a leash and collar with ID tags just in case you get separated during your adventures.

3. Plan pet friendly stops

As you choose your route, research pet friendly stops, such as rest areas and parks that welcome pets. Plan to stop every 2 4 hours. However, you may have to stop more frequently if your pup has travel anxiety or becomes motion sick.

4. Prioritize exercise and playtime

Stops aren’t just for meals and potty breaks. Just like you, your four legged friend needs to stretch their legs and burn off some energy. During rest stops, take time to exercise and play with your pet.

If you stop at a park with trails, plan to go hiking. At a pet friendly rest area, play fetch or simply run around. Whatever physical activities you decide to do, exercise and playtime during a long road trip will keep your dog engaged and entertained. You’ll get a workout, too!

5. Keep cool and hydrated

Depending on where you plan to travel, your destination may get even hotter than what your furry family member is used to back at home.

Keep your pup cool and hydrated by offering plenty of fresh water during rest stops. Consider purchasing a cooling mat or vest for your pet to help them stay comfortable. Most importantly, never leave your dog in a parked car on a hot day.

Are you ready to hit the road with your best friend? Follow these five tips, and you’ll be well on your way to an unforgettable road trip with your dog.

you plan to grow your family in your next home. Look for Flexible Spaces

Seek homes that offer rooms with multiple functions. For example, an office area may be suitable for a small child’s room, or a sunroom may be converted to a laundry area down the road. Unfinished basements are also blank canvases that can be customized to meet your family’s wants and needs.

Get to Know the Area

The purchase of a home goes well beyond the property line. Be sure to examine the neighborhood in which the house is situated. From the condition of the neighbors’ houses to highway access and the proximity of necessities like grocery stores and gas stations, be sure to take every factor into account to help ensure you’re selecting the right location.
