Whether you’re grilling in the backyard, at a picnic or simply relaxing poolside to celebrate America’s 250th anniversary, this summer is sure to be filled with special celebrations. Throughout those 250 years, food has brought people together - and continues to do so.

From barbecues to patios, fresh foods are at the heart of American celebrations. Healthy, fresh ingredients help elevate classic recipes with sweet corn taking center stage in many iconic summer dishes. As a trusted American grower, Duda Farm Fresh Foods provides equally healthy and flavorful recipes using Dandy Sweet Corn to build the heart of your menu.

While corn on its own is a classic side dishwith Americans consuming approximately 1,400 bushels per year, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture - you can put a twist on tradition by serving Elote, also known as Mexican street corn, as a bold and delicious way to enjoy fresh corn at its best. Cooked to perfection then slathered in a creamy, zesty mix of mayonnaise, lime juice, cheese and chili powder, Elote transforms a simple ear of corn into an irresistible snack or side.

You can add its vibrant flavor and fun to your table with a number of easy cooking methods:

Grill: For the traditional method of cooking Elote, preheat your grill to medium-high heat. Place the corn directly on the grill grates then cook 10-15 minutes, turning every 2-3 minutes until nicely charred and cooked through, like these recipes for Easy Elote Corn or Vegan Elote.

Boil: Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add corn and cook 5-7 minutes until tender.

Roast: Preheat the oven to 400 F. Place corn on a baking sheet and roast 20-25 minutes, turning halfway through.

Air Fryer: Preheat the air fryer to 400 F. Cook corn for 12-15 minutes, turning once.

Easy Elote Corn

Recipe courtesy of The Produce Moms on behalf of Duda Farm Fresh Foods

Servings: 4

1 Dandy Sweet Corn Tray (4 count)

1 lime, juice only (about 2 tablespoons)

1 cup mayonnaise or Mexican crema

2 tablespoons Elote seasoning

1 cup cotija cheese, crumbled fresh cilantro, chopped, for garnish hot sauce or chili powder (optional) Heat grill to medium-high heat.

Place corn directly on grates and cook 10-15 minutes, turning every 2-3 minutes, until charred and cooked through.

While corn is still warm, squeeze lime juice on all sides. Brush or spoon mayonnaise on each ear, ensuring all sides are coated.

Evenly sprinkle Elote seasoning over coated corn. Using hands, gently press seasoning into mayo.

Arrange Elote on serving platter, sprinkle with cotija cheese and garnish with fresh chopped cilantro. Serve with hot sauce or chili powder for extra heat, if desired.

CELEBRATING FATHER’S DAY

Father’s Day is a special time to recognize and celebrate the fathers, grandfathers, stepfathers, and father figures who make a meaningful difference in our lives. Observed each year in June, the holiday is more than just a tradition—it is an opportunity to express gratitude for the love, support, and guidance that fathers provide every day.

Fathers often play many important roles within a family. They are teachers, protectors, role models, and trusted friends. Through life’s challenges and successes, fathers help shape the values and character of their children. Whether offering advice, cheering from the sidelines, or simply being present during difficult moments, their influence leaves a lasting impact.

One of the most meaningful parts of Father’s Day is the chance to slow down and spend quality time together. While gifts such as tools, watches, or favorite meals are always appreciated, many fathers value simple moments the most. A handwritten card, a phone call, or a shared

afternoon with family can create memories that last far beyond the holiday itself.

Fatherhood looks different for everyone, and there is no perfect guide to being a dad. Some fathers lead with quiet strength, while others inspire with humor and encouragement. What matters most is the love and dedication they show to the people they care about. Across generations, fathers continue to provide support, wisdom, and stability that help families grow stronger.

Father’s Day is also a reminder to honor those who may no longer be with us. Many people use the occasion to reflect on cherished memories and celebrate the lessons passed down from fathers and grandfathers who helped shape their lives. Their legacy often lives on through family traditions, stories, and values shared with future generations.

As Father’s Day approaches, it’s a wonderful opportunity to show appreciation in both big and small ways. Whether it’s gathering for a backyard cookout, enjoying a favorite activity together, or simply saying “thank you,” the holiday reminds us how important fathers and father figures truly are.

At its heart, Father’s Day is about connection, gratitude, and love. It is a celebration of the men who encourage us, stand beside us, and help guide us through life. No matter how the day is celebrated, taking the time to recognize fathers can make the occasion meaningful for the entire family.

More than half of adults and about 60% of children in the United States have unhealthy diets, which can contribute to higher rates of health factors such as high blood pressure and obesity, and lead directly to poor health outcomes including death from chronic conditions such as cardiovascular disease.

These findings come from the American Heart Association, a global force changing the future of health for all, which published its “2026 Dietary Guidance to Improve Cardiovascular Health” in its peer-reviewed, flagship journal “Circulation” recommending Americans follow a lifelong healthy eating pattern that may reduce cardiovascular disease risk and improve quality of life based on the latest in evidence -based science.

The statement outlines nine key features of a heart-healthy dietary pattern:

1. Adjust energy intake and expenditure to achieve and maintain a healthy body weight: Try to balance how much you eat with how active you are to reach and maintain a healthy body weight.

2. Eat a variety of vegetables and fruits: Include different colors, textures and types of produce. Remember, even canned and frozen can be nutritious and affordable.

3. Choose foods made mostly with whole grains: Foods such as whole?wheat bread, brown rice and oatmeal are typically better choices than refined grains including white bread or rice.

4. Choose healthy sources of protein: Shift from meat to plant-based sources such as legumes, including beans, peas and lentils, along with nuts and seeds; regularly consume fish and seafood; select low-fat or fat-free dairy products; and, if red meat is desired, choose lean cuts, avoid processed forms and limit portion size.

5. Choose sources of unsaturated fats:

Replace saturated fats with healthy unsaturated fats, including those from nuts, seeds, avocados and nontropical plant oils.

6. Choose minimally processed foods: Go with foods close to their natural state, with minimal added commercial ingredients, rather than those that are highly processed with additives.

7. Minimize intake of added sugars: Limit the sugar-sweetened beverages you drink and the foods with added sugar you eat.

8. Choose foods low in sodium and prepare foods with minimal or no salt: Be aware of hidden sources of sodium in prepared and packaged foods, and season food with healthier options such as herbs, spices or lemon instead of salt.

9. If alcohol is not consumed, do not start; if alcohol is consumed, limit intake: Alcohol can increase your risk for high blood pressure and other health conditions, so if you don’t drink, don’t start.

“For healthy eating to be more attainable and sustainable, we recommend people focus on their overall eating pattern rather than specific nutrients or foods,” said Alice H. Lichtenstein, D.Sc., FAHA, volunteer chair of the scientific statement writing committee and senior scientist and leader of the Diet and Chronic Disease Prevention Directive at the Jean Mayer USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts University. “Every time you choose to make a swap for a healthier alternative, you’re making a step toward a healthier life.”

While the updated guidance is specifically designed to improve cardiovascular health, it’s generally consistent with dietary recommendations for other conditions like Type 2 diabetes, kidney disease, some cancers and brain health as well due to shared risk factors, including high blood pressure, high cholesterol, high blood sugar, excess weight and reduced kidney function.

“A healthy dietary pattern can support lifelong health and well - being beyond cardiovascular health,” Lichtenstein said.

on in a way the calendar did not quite explain. A new survey from ThriftBooks, the largest independent online bookseller of new and used books, found that many readers believe the endless summer feeling is gone, and that the one thing most associated with getting it back is also the thing they feel least entitled to do.

It also found that nearly three -quarters of U.S. adults who read say summer moves faster now than it did when they were growing up. And 76% say reading is the one thing that slows it down.

Summer used to feel different

Part of what shifted it was the screen. About 60% of readers say screens take away from the feeling of summer. The associations most tied to childhood summers - being outdoors, family time and reading - have quietly faded into the background. What replaced them is a season that feels more scheduled, more managed and harder to slow down.

Reading slows it down. Guilt gets in the way.

Reading holds a complicated place in that picture. Fifty-three percent of readers fell in love with reading during childhood, and the emotional connection between books and summer runs deep. Fifty-six percent say reading makes summer feel like it lasts longer, and most

agree it helps them slow down in a way other forms of downtime simply do not.

But wanting to read and feeling permitted to read are different things. Seventy-four percent of readers say they sometimes or often feel that reading for pleasure is only allowed after everything else is done. That hesitation often looks familiar: a book left on the nightstand while the dishes get done, a chapter saved for when the to-do list clears. The single biggest obstacle is not a shortage of time but the sense that reading is not productive enough to justify: 27% say the main barrier is feeling like they should be doing something more useful instead.

A generational divide

That tension runs deepest among younger readers. Gen Z enters summer more optimistic about reading than older generations, but also more burdened by it. Seventy-seven percent of Gen Z say reading makes summer feel longer, compared with 44% of Baby Boomers. Yet it is younger readers who are most likely to feel they need to earn the time first.

Why it matters now

The findings suggest summer often feels shorter because schedules and distractions leave less room to slow down. For many readers, books may be one of the simplest ways to bring back the endless summer feeling.

Methodology

ThriftBooks commissioned Atomik Research to conduct an online survey of 2,000 adults throughout the United States who read three or more books per year. The margin of error is plus or minus 2 percentage points with a confidence level of 95%.

Fieldwork took place between April 13 and April 17, 2026. Atomik Research, part of 4media group, is a creative market research agency. #17933

tool for skin cancer prevention, many Americans still say they aren’t sure how sunscreen works. In fact, confusion about its use and misinformation persist, especially on social media.

According to a national survey conducted by Atomik Research on behalf of the nonprofit Melanoma Research Alliance (MRA), 53% of the 2,000 adult respondents said they’ve seen claims that sunscreen ingredients may be harmful while 59% reported they’re concerned about what’s in sunscreen and 38% don’t believe sunscreen is safe and effective.

This sunscreen confusion highlights a central challenge in preventing skin cancer, which is the most common form of cancer in the United States, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Among the various types of skin cancer, 9 out of 10, including melanoma, are linked to exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation, according to the MRA. The survey found most Americans have a basic understanding of the risks of sun exposure, including the more than 8 in 10 who recognize spending long hours in the sun contributes to melanoma risk. However, roughly one - quarter said they rarely or never use sunscreen when outdoors.

Reducing exposure to UV radiation lowers the risk of skin cancer, making sunscreen a key part of prevention, even during those everyday moments you may not immediately recognize as “risky,” like a short walk through a parking lot

or an hour sitting in the bleachers at a sporting event.

To combat the confusion, it’s important to first understand how sunscreen works. It absorbs or blocks UV radiation from reaching the skin, preventing DNA damage that can cause cancer.

“Conflicting or incomplete information can make people less likely to wear sunscreen consistently,” said Dr. Joan Levy, chief science officer at the MRA, “but the science on sun protection is clear, and sunscreen is one of the most effective tools to prevent melanoma.”

Active ingredients in sunscreen in the U.S. undergo rigorous review by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which evaluates them as over-the - counter drugs - a standard which requires extensive testing and contributes to a more limited set of approved UV filters compared to Europe, where sunscreens are regulated as cosmetics.

The FDA is evaluating additional methodologies for assessing sunscreen ingredients, a process that could, according to Levy, expand the number of approved UV filters available in the U.S.

While melanoma remains the deadliest form of skin cancer, real progress is being made in melanoma research. Recent advances are improving outcomes for many patients with the disease, though approximately 50% of patients do not respond to current treatments, according to the MRA, underscoring why prevention and early detection are critical.

“Treatments such as immunotherapy have significantly improved outcomes for many melanoma patients, but we should never need to treat what we could have prevented,” Levy said.

Nothing beats summer days spent on the water. Looking to get your feet wet? There are plenty of ways to get on the water whether you own a boat or are just getting started. Boating has seen a surge in popularity as millions of Americans prioritize experiences, outdoor recreation and work-life balance.

Being on the water provides freedom to explore and is one of the most fun, relaxing ways to escape stress on land. Plus, there is a scientific connection between water and happiness - it has a positive impact on psychological, emotional and behavioral health.

Whether you’re a newcomer or an experienced captain navigating best practices, remember boating should be fun, not intimidating. Understanding basic skills and passenger etiquette will boost your confidence and help create a safer environment to allow for an enjoyable, stress-free day on the water.

“Spending time on the water with loved ones away from all the distraction on land is one of the best ways to decompress and create lasting memories,” said Ellen Bradley, senior vice president of Discover Boating. “Before stepping on board or taking the helm, it’s a good idea to brush up on the safety essentials. There are a variety of educational resources available to not only ensure the safety of those on board but also protect other boaters so everyone can enjoy a fun day on the water.”

Discover Boating is a one -stop resource for all things boating, from safety and education articles, maintenance checklists and boating destinations to finding your dream boat, locating verified dealerships in your area, and more.

View Discover Boating’s new Boating Safety Basics Video Series, Presented with Progressive Insurance for expert tips to prepare for your captain duties and be the best boat guest including fueling best practices, proper use of navigation lights, trailering techniques and safe seating tips.

2. Take a class. Sign up for a boating lesson to hone your powerboating, sailing or watersports skills by mastering the basics while having fun along the way. On-water training courses, watersports camps, youth boating programs and more are offered across the U.S.

3. Visit a boat show. Boat shows are an ideal place to immerse yourself in the boating lifestyle and provide a unique opportunity to meet face -to-face with - and shop - a variety of boat dealers and marine product companies all under one roof. Most boat shows also offer educational opportunities whether you’re a seasoned skipper looking to improve your skills or a new boater looking for tips on everything from boating safety to navigation and boat operation. Find a boat show in your area.

4. Look for the seal of approval. When shopping for a boat, whether at a boat show, online or at a dealership, check to make sure it is NMMA Certified. NMMA Certified boat and trailer manufacturers have been independently inspected to ensure they meet strict industry standards for safety and construction, as well as all federal regulations. Look for the NMMA Certified sticker near the helm of a boat.

5. Preserve your boat with proper maintenance. Similar to cars, there are a few areas that require regular maintenance by the owner, and a few areas that require maintenance at routine intervals, which most leave to the professionals. Prepare a boat maintenance checklist that covers everything from engine needs to cleaning to electrical systems to ensure your boat has a long lifespan.

Hours after a storm, teams of professionals need to move quickly to assess the damage. That work used to take days of site visits and time -consuming analyses.

Now, a roofing contractor can pull up a color-coded map of every roof over 15 years old within two miles with agentic tools. An insurance claims manager can see which homes have the worst damage and need to be inspected first. A government assessor can map which neighborhoods were hit hardest. As hurricane season opens June 1, Eagleview Horizon, an agentic AI engine, shows how predictive AI is giving these professionals a head start.

Why the trades are under pressure

Billion-dollar weather and climate disasters in the U.S. have nearly tripled since the 2000s, now averaging 19 per year, according to NOAA. The trades are paying for it. Insurance carriers are required to handle more claims. Contractors race to keep up with demand. And government planners assess wider damage zones due to population increases. For insurers, that pressure is already showing. AM Best reported that the homeowners insurance segment had its toughest first quarter in five years, driven by January wildfires in California and tornado outbreaks across the Midwest, Southern and

Plains states. That hit a property and casualty insurance market where U.S. premiums crossed $1.05 trillion in 2024, according to S&P Global Market Intelligence.

For the majority of the 100,000-plus contractors in the $25 billion U.S. roofing industry, the work hasn’t changed much. They still spend hours canvassing neighborhoods street by street. Adjusters drive door-to-door. Government planners wait for damage reports to come in. As storm seasons grow more intense and claims volume rises, that model is starting to crack.

A shift across multiple industries

AI can find information faster, but newer systems can also turn a question into a workflow.

For early adopters, that is changing more than storm response. Commercial roofers can use these tools to pinpoint structural changes and complete annual inspections more safely. Infrastructure managers can track changes over time to flag maintenance needs. Property managers can identify which assets in large portfolios are approaching maintenance risk before they fail.

What may matter most is who can do this work. Until recently, sophisticated property analysis required trained specialists and could take weeks. Now any contractor, adjuster, assessor or planner can begin with a plain question and get a clearer view of where to act first.

What this means for storm season Trades will keep facing issues caused by more storms, and time will tell whether new tools can spread fast enough to meet the overwhelming demands of the industry.

No matter what you call it, charcuterie boards, grazing boards and snack platters are all basically the same thing. The boards make a trendy addition to an entertaining menu, but a platter or kid-friendly board can be equally pleasing.

What you serve on a grazing board is entirely up to you. Most include a selection of meats and cheeses, and many incorporate nuts, crackers, dips and jams. Some also incorporate fresh fruits and vegetables. Creating your own board means there really are no rules; you can add just about anything you want.

To build a successful board, keep these tips in mind:

Choose ingredients and elements that don’t require temperature control. The idea of a grazing board is that it sits out for a while. Avoid anything that needs refrigeration, heat or will lose its shape or flavor if it rests for an extended amount of time.

Select a surface large enough to hold a variety of food. It can be a simple cutting board or a cute platter. There’s no specific size requirement but err on the side of bigger; spacing out your goodies can be more attractive

and less messy.

Use high-quality ingredients to ensure every bite is delicious and nutritious. While shopping, remember to look for the Produce for Kids and Healthy Family Project logos next to favorite items in the produce department, as adding these flavorful fruits and veggies to your cart can help make a difference in your community.

Build your board around a theme to add an extra element of fun. Use mini cookie cutters to make fun, kid-friendly shapes out of cheese and meats. Be mindful of colors; a rainbow platter is vibrant and appealing, and colorful fruits and veggies offer a strong mix of nutrients.

Remember it doesn’t have to be elaborate. Classic favorites are all you need. Even kid favorites like sections of mandarin oranges, carrot sticks and chocolate chips are fair game for a family-friendly board.

Growing your own vegetable garden is a rewarding way to enjoy fresh, healthy produce while spending time outdoors. Whether you have a large backyard or a small garden bed, a little planning can help you achieve a successful harvest.

The first step is choosing the right location. Most vegetables require at least six to eight hours of direct sunlight each day. Select an area with well-drained soil and easy access to water. Avoid low spots where water tends to collect after rain.

Next, prepare the soil. Healthy soil is the foundation of a productive garden. Remove weeds, rocks, and debris from the planting area. Mix compost or other organic matter into the soil to improve its structure and provide nutrients for growing plants. A soil test can help determine if additional amendments are needed.

When deciding what to plant, consider the growing season and your family’s preferences. Popular beginner-friendly vegetables include tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, lettuce, green beans, zucchini, and carrots. Read seed packets or plant labels carefully to learn the proper planting depth, spacing, and timing for each crop.

Planting at the right time is important. Cool-season vegetables such as lettuce, spinach, peas, and radishes can be planted in early spring. Warm-season crops like tomatoes, peppers, and squash should be planted after the danger of frost has passed.

Watering consistently helps plants develop strong roots and produce healthy vegetables. Most gardens benefit from about one inch of water per week, either from rainfall or irrigation. Water deeply and early in the morning to reduce evaporation and help prevent disease.

Mulching around plants can help retain moisture, suppress weeds, and regulate soil temperature. Organic mulches such as straw, shredded leaves, or grass clippings work well in vegetable gardens.

Regular maintenance is essential throughout the growing season. Pull weeds before they become established, monitor plants for pests and diseases, and harvest vegetables when they are ripe. Frequent harvesting often encourages plants to continue producing.

Companion planting can also be beneficial. Certain plants grow well together and may help deter pests naturally. For example, marigolds are commonly planted near vegetables because they can attract beneficial insects and add color to the garden.

Perhaps the greatest reward of gardening comes at harvest time. Fresh vegetables picked from your own garden often have better flavor than store -bought produce and provide a sense of accomplishment that makes the effort worthwhile.

With proper planning, good soil preparation, and regular care, even beginner gardeners can enjoy a productive vegetable garden and a season filled with fresh, homegrown food.

A swimming pool can provide hours of fun, exercise, and relaxation during warm weather. However, pools also require responsible supervision and safety practices to prevent accidents and injuries. Whether you own a backyard pool or visit a community swimming area, following basic safety guidelines can help keep everyone safe.

One of the most important rules of pool safety is constant supervision. Children should never be left unattended near water, even for a moment. Drowning can happen quickly and quietly. A responsible adult should always watch swimmers and avoid distractions such as phones, books, or conversations.

Swimming lessons are another valuable safety measure. Teaching children and adults how to swim can increase confidence and reduce the risk of accidents. Even strong swimmers should understand water safety rules and recognize their limitations.

Pool owners should install proper barriers around the swimming area. A fence with a self-closing, self-latching gate can help prevent unsupervised access by young children and pets. Pool covers and alarms can provide

additional layers of protection when the pool is not in use.

Keeping lifesaving equipment nearby is essential. A life ring, reaching pole, and fully stocked first-aid kit should be easily accessible. It is also beneficial for family members and caregivers to learn CPR and basic first aid so they can respond quickly in an emergency.

Before entering the water, swimmers should be aware of pool rules. Running on wet surfaces, rough play, and diving into shallow water can lead to serious injuries. Clear safety rules should be communicated and enforced for all guests.

Water quality is another important aspect of pool safety. Proper chemical balance helps prevent harmful bacteria and keeps the water clean and clear. Pool owners should regularly test water chemistry and maintain filtration systems according to manufacturer recommendations.

Weather conditions should also be monitored. Swimmers should leave the pool immediately if thunder or lightning is present. It is safest to wait at least 30 minutes after the last sound of thunder before returning to the water.

Finally, avoid swimming alone whenever possible. Having another person nearby can make a critical difference if a medical emergency or accident occurs.

Swimming pools can be a wonderful source of enjoyment when safety comes first. Through active supervision, proper maintenance, swimming education, and adherence to safety rules, families can create a safer environment and enjoy the water with confidence throughout the swimming season.

to recognizing the fathers, grandfathers, stepfathers, and father figures who make a positive impact in our lives. While spending quality time together is often the greatest gift, a thoughtful present can be a meaningful way to show appreciation and gratitude.

When choosing a Father’s Day gift, consider his interests and hobbies. For the dad who enjoys cooking outdoors, grilling accessories, specialty seasonings, or a new barbecue tool set can make his next cookout even more enjoyable. If he loves spending time in the garden or working on home projects, practical tools and equipment are gifts he is likely to use throughout the year.

Technology gifts remain popular choices. Wireless headphones, smart home devices, portable speakers, or phone accessories can add convenience and entertainment to everyday life. For fathers who enjoy reading, an e -reader or a subscription to an audiobook service may provide hours of enjoyment.

Personalized gifts often create lasting memories. Custom photo frames, engraved pocket knives, monogrammed wallets, or photo books filled with family pictures can transform a simple gift into something truly meaningful. These items serve as daily reminders of the special bond shared with loved ones.

Experience -based gifts are another excellent option. Tickets to a sporting event, a concert, a fishing trip, or a local attraction can create memories that last far longer than many material gifts. Even planning a family picnic, backyard barbecue, or favorite home -cooked meal can make Father’s Day memorable.

For dads who appreciate relaxation, consider gifts that encourage downtime. Comfortable clothing, a cozy robe, gourmet coffee, specialty teas, or a collection of his favorite snacks can help him unwind and enjoy a well-deserved break.

No matter the size or cost of the gift, the most important aspect of Father’s Day is expressing gratitude. A handwritten card sharing favorite memories, words of appreciation, and heartfelt thanks often means more than any purchased item. Taking time to acknowledge the guidance, support, and love that fathers provide can make the day truly special.

This Father’s Day, focus on celebrating the unique qualities that make your dad special. Whether through a thoughtful gift, a shared experience, or simply spending time together, the greatest present is showing him how much he is valued and appreciated.

HOWARD COUNTY

MEAN GIRLS June 12‑August 23, Toby’s Dinner Theatre, 5900 Symphony Woods Road Columbia, MD. On Wednesdays we wear pink. Mean Girls, the brutally hilarious musical from book writer Tina Fey (30 Rock) is adapted from the hit 2004 film and was nominated for 12 Tony Awards.
