A BREATH OF FRESH FLAVOR

If you’re looking for a true taste of Howard County, Breezy Willow Farm Country Market is a destination worth exploring. Nestled in the countryside, this small, family‑owned and operated farm business has become a favorite stop for locals and visitors alike, offering farm‑fresh foods, friendly service, and a shopping experience that celebrates the best of Maryland agriculture.

The market is best known for its impressive selection of locally grown fruits and vegetables, many harvested just steps away from the market itself. As the seasons change, so do the offerings. Spring welcomes vibrant bedding plants and fresh greens, summer brings sweet corn, juicy tomatoes, peaches, and berries, while autumn fills the market with colorful pumpkins, crisp apples, gourds, and seasonal decorations that make every visit feel like a celebration.

But fresh produce is only the beginning. Inside the market, shoppers will discover shelves filled with locally raised meats, fresh dairy products, homemade baked goods, jams, jellies, honey, sauces, snacks, and specialty foods sourced from farms and artisans throughout the region. It’s the perfect place to gather ingredients for a family dinner or find a unique gift for someone who appreciates locally made products.

Breezy Willow Farm is also proud to offer a seasonal Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) farm‑share program. These customizable shares are available in multiple sizes, with both pickup and delivery options, helping connect local families directly with the farm throughout the growing season. The Country Market itself serves as the largest CSA pickup location, making it a convenient hub for members to collect their weekly or biweekly shares of fresh, seasonal produce.

One of the things that makes Breezy Willow Farm Country Market so special is its deep commitment to the local agricultural community. The farm family is passionate about preserving local agriculture, feeding their community, and supporting other small farms and locally owned businesses. Every purchase helps strengthen the area’s farming network while giving customers access to food that’s fresh, flavorful, and often picked at the peak of ripeness.

Families also enjoy visiting throughout the year for seasonal events and festive displays that celebrate Maryland’s farming traditions. Whether you’re stopping in for fresh strawberries, selecting the perfect pumpkin, or simply enjoying a leisurely afternoon in the country, there’s always something new to experience.

At Breezy Willow Farm Country Market, shopping becomes more than checking items off a grocery list—it’s an opportunity to connect with the people who grow your food and experience the simple pleasures of farm life. It’s a delicious reminder that some of the freshest flavors and warmest welcomes are found right here in Howard County.

THREE SLEEP MYTHS THAT COULD BE KEEPING YOU AWAKE

Americans have never been more focused on optimizing their health. They wear devices that measure nearly every aspect of their day ‑ from workouts and steps to heart rate and recovery ‑ and increasingly turn to GLP‑1 medications as part of the weight management journey.

Alongside these changes, experts are encouraging people to prioritize another key pillar of health: quality sleep, which plays an important role in overall well‑being and can support healthy lifestyle habits.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than 30% of U.S. adults regularly get less than the recommended seven to nine hours of sleep each night.

Dr. Stephanie Stahl, Medical Director at Indiana University Health, notes that many people still treat sleep as something they’ll fit in if there’s time. Stahl is the Sleep Medicine Fellowship Program Director and Associate Professor at Indiana University School of Medicine as well as Natrol® Sleep Science Advisory Board member. “Many people think of sleep as the first thing they can sacrifice when life gets busy. But sleep isn’t a luxury. It’s one of the most powerful tools we have to support our health, mental well‑being and daily performance.”

That can be difficult in today’s always‑on world. Packed schedules, constant notifications and late‑night scrolling can all work against the body’s natural sleep‑wake cycle. In fact, 38% of adults say using their phone or tablet before bed to read the news or “doomscroll” makes their sleep somewhat or significantly worse.

What sleep myths could be keeping you awake?

“One of the biggest misconceptions I hear is that sleep starts when your head hits the pillow,” said Stahl. “The truth is that your body has been preparing for sleep all day. Your light exposure, activity, meals, stress and evening routine all influence how prepared your brain and body are for sleep.”

She describes this as your sleep ecosystem ‑ the daily habits, routines and environmental cues that work together to influence your body’s natural sleep‑wake cycle. One of the most important players in that ecosystem is melatonin, a hormone your body naturally produces in response to darkness. Rather than forcing sleep, melatonin helps signal to your brain that it’s time to wind down.

Stahl is helping to debunk three common sleep myths:

Myth: Better sleep starts at bedtime.

Stahl: “Great sleep starts the moment you wake up. Morning sunlight helps regulate your body’s internal clock and supports natural melatonin production later that evening.”

Myth: I’ll catch up on sleep this weekend.

Stahl: “Consistency matters more than catch‑up sleep. Keeping a regular sleep and wake schedule (yes, even on weekends) helps reinforce your body’s natural rhythm.”

Myth: The eight hours you’re asleep are all that matter.

Stahl: “The hour before bed matters, too. A consistent wind‑down routine, like dimming the lights and avoiding screen time, helps prepare your brain and body for quality sleep.”

What small habits lead to better sleep?

The good news is that improving sleep doesn’t require overhauling your lifestyle. Stahl recommends focusing on a few consistent habits: Get outside for natural light early in the day, stay physically active, avoid caffeine in the afternoon and evening, maintain a regular sleep schedule and create a cool, dark, quiet sleep environment.

GROWING BEAUTIFUL, SUSTAINABLE LANDSCAPES WITH LAUREN’S GARDEN SERVICE & CULTIVATE

Beautiful landscapes can do more than enhance curb appeal—they can support local wildlife, improve the environment, and create outdoor spaces that thrive for years. That’s the mission behind Lauren’s Garden Service and Cultivate Garden & Goods, two complementary businesses owned by horticulturist Lauren Turner.

Lauren’s Garden Service specializes in landscape design, installation, maintenance, and native plant gardening throughout Central Maryland. Every project is designed with sustainability in mind, using native plants and environmentally responsible practices to create healthy, low‑maintenance landscapes that attract pollinators, birds, and beneficial insects.

The company’s dedication to quality has earned community recognition, including Best of Howard County – Landscaper and Honorable Mention for Howard County Garden Center. These awards reflect the trust Lauren and her team have built by helping homeowners create outdoor spaces that are both beautiful and environmentally friendly.

In addition to professional landscaping services, Lauren’s Garden Service operates a Native Plant Nursery offering a wide variety of trees, shrubs, and perennials selected to thrive in Maryland’s climate. Whether customers are creating a pollinator garden, replacing invasive plants, or simply looking for expert advice, the knowledgeable staff provides guidance to help every garden succeed.

Complementing the landscaping business is Cultivate Garden & Goods, a boutique shop featuring houseplants, gardening tools, botanical gifts, home décor, and thoughtfully curated products from local artisans and eco‑conscious makers. The store is a destination for gardeners and nature lovers looking for unique items that celebrate the beauty of the outdoors.

Education is also a cornerstone of both businesses. Throughout the year, Lauren’s Garden Service hosts seasonal plant sales, gardening workshops, and hands‑on classes that inspire gardeners of all skill levels to learn more about native plants and sustainable landscaping. They also offer nature craft classes like stained glass, natural dye printing and pumpkin succulent arrangements as well as seasonal ladies night out events. “We aim to build a local community,” says Lauren.

Lauren Turner’s background in horticulture and passion for environmental stewardship have shaped a business focused on creating landscapes that benefit both homeowners and the natural world. Together with a dedicated team of professionals, she has built a reputation for exceptional service, expert knowledge, and innovative landscape solutions.

Whether you’re planning a complete landscape makeover, searching for native plants, or shopping for the perfect garden‑inspired gift, Lauren’s Garden Service and Cultivate Garden & Goods offer the expertise, products, and inspiration to help every outdoor space flourish.

QUALITY FROM THE GROUND UP

For generations, Snader Farms Beef has been dedicated to producing high‑quality, locally raised beef while preserving the agricultural traditions that have long defined Howard County. Built on a commitment to responsible farming, animal care, and exceptional flavor, the family‑owned farm offers consumers the opportunity to know exactly where their food comes from—and the people who raise it.

At Snader Farms, quality begins in the pasture. The cattle are carefully raised with a focus on proper nutrition, low‑stress handling, and attentive care from start to finish. This hands‑on approach results in flavorful, tender beef that families can feel good about serving at the dinner table. From everyday ground beef and steaks to roasts and specialty cuts, every package reflects the farm’s dedication to excellence.

Buying directly from Snader Farms also means supporting local agriculture and strengthening the connection between farmers and consumers. Instead of traveling hundreds—or even thousands—of miles, the beef is raised close to home, helping reduce transportation while supporting Maryland’s farming community. Customers appreciate not only the freshness of the product but also the opportunity to ask questions and learn more about how their food is produced.

Whether you’re planning a backyard cookout, preparing a holiday feast, or stocking the freezer with locally raised beef, Snader Farms offers a variety of options to fit every household. Many customers choose to purchase individual cuts, while others take advantage of bulk freezer packages that provide excellent value throughout the year.

Beyond producing exceptional beef, Snader Farms represents something increasingly important in today’s food system: trust. Knowing the family behind your food creates a connection that’s difficult to find in the grocery store aisle.

From pasture to plate, Snader Farms Beef continues to demonstrate that great meals begin with great farming. It’s a delicious reminder that when you support local agriculture, you’re not only enjoying outstanding beef—you’re helping preserve the farms, families, and traditions that make Howard County such a special place to call home.

MARY’S LAND FARM

Nestled among the rolling hills of Ellicott City, Maryland, Mary’s Land Farm is much more than a place to buy fresh vegetables or spend an afternoon outdoors—it’s a destination where agriculture, education, and family fun come together. Spanning 160 acres, the farm has grown into one of Howard County’s premier agritourism attractions while remaining committed to regenerative farming and responsible land stewardship. The Cunningham family purchased the property in 2014 with a vision of creating a thriving ecosystem that goes beyond traditional organic farming, focusing on healthy soil, ethically raised livestock, and sustainable practices.

Visitors quickly discover there’s always something happening. The farm store is stocked with 100% grass‑fed beef, pasture‑raised pork, chicken, lamb, farm‑fresh eggs, seasonal produce, artisan olive oils, handcrafted gifts, and locally made products. It’s the perfect place to fill a shopping basket with ingredients for a truly farm‑to‑table meal.

Beyond the market, Mary’s Land Farm offers experiences that appeal to every age. Families can meet friendly farm animals, explore walking trails, enjoy seasonal festivals, attend cooking classes, participate in educational workshops, or bring children for field trips and summer camps. Throughout the year, popular events such as sunflower celebrations, pumpkin festivities, farmers markets, and holiday activities transform the farm into a lively gathering place for the community.

Looking for a unique getaway? Guests can even spend the night at the beautifully restored 19th‑century farmhouse inn, waking up to peaceful countryside views and a farm‑fresh breakfast made with ingredients harvested just steps away.

Perhaps the greatest lesson Mary’s Land Farm teaches is that farming isn’t simply about growing food—it’s about cultivating connections. Whether you’re shopping for fresh ingredients, attending a workshop, relaxing at the inn, or simply watching the animals graze across the pastures, every visit offers a reminder that healthy land, healthy food, and a strong community all grow together.

PLAN AHEAD NOW TO SAVE ON ENERGY BILLS THIS WINTER

Worried about rising energy costs as you look ahead to the colder months? You’re not alone.

Nearly 7 in 10 Americans (68%) are already struggling with higher utility bills, which show no signs of going down. With autumn just around the corner, it’s natural to start thinking about ways to keep heating bills from getting out of control. Planning ahead can also give you time to take advantage of simple, low‑cost methods to improve your home’s energy efficiency.

Try a home energy audit

You could pay for a professional energy audit, but many local utility companies offer free, low‑cost or subsidized home energy audits. This process can help you discover where you could make improvements that can impact your heating costs. Typical energy audits evaluate your home for things like air leaks around windows and doors, your home’s insulation, the efficiency of your HVAC system and more. Some programs even offer free products including LED light bulbs.

If your local company doesn’t offer this service, you can perform your own energy audit, following advice from organizations like the National Association of Home Builders.

Quick steps to improve energy efficiency

Energy audits are one helpful step toward identifying areas of your home that need improvement, so that’s a good place to start.

Here are a few simple, low‑cost DIY tasks which address many common issues found in energy audits:

* Caulking and weather stripping for windows or doors can help prevent heat loss, saving anywhere from 5‑10% on energy costs over the winter. You may already know from previous winters what areas of your home are harder to keep warm, so take a look at the windows and doors ‑ both inside and outside the home ‑ to find areas where extra caulking or new weather stripping might be needed.

* Look for obstructions around your home to ensure heat vents, air registers or radiators are not blocked by furniture, and are clear of dust and debris.

* Replace all your lighting with more efficient Energy Star certified LED bulbs.

* Consider using blackout curtains with thermal properties that are effective for retaining heat.

Take care of HVAC maintenance now

Another advantage of planning ahead is that many utility companies and HVAC contractors get booked up far in advance, especially for fall furnace cleaning and tune‑up appointments. By calling to schedule your appointment now, you’ll ensure your HVAC system is in great shape before you really need it. This can help prevent emergencies and costly repairs down the road.

This is also the perfect time to make sure your furnace filter has been recently changed. Writing the date when you swap out the HVAC filter on the filter itself, as well as setting calendar reminders, can help you remember when this vital task needs to be performed next.

FRESH FROM THE FARM

Few things say “Maryland fresh” quite like a cold glass of milk from South Mountain Creamery. Nestled in the rolling countryside of Frederick County, this family‑owned dairy farm has been delighting customers for generations by delivering fresh, wholesome products straight from the farm to local homes and businesses.

Owned by the second generation of the Brusco‑Sowers Family, South Mountain Creamery believes that great dairy begins with exceptional animal care. The cows are raised with comfort and nutrition in mind, producing high‑quality milk that is bottled just steps from where it is collected. The result is farm‑fresh flavor that’s hard to beat—and customers can taste the difference.

While the creamery is famous for its milk, there’s much more to discover. Visitors and home delivery customers can enjoy rich chocolate milk, creamy ice cream, butter, yogurt, cheeses, fresh eggs, seasonal beverages, baked goods, locally grown produce, and meats from neighboring farms. The farm’s convenient home delivery service has become a favorite throughout Central Maryland, bringing fresh groceries right to customers’ doorsteps while supporting local agriculture.

A visit to South Mountain Creamery is an experience in itself. Families can take guided farm tours, meet the dairy cows and playful calves, learn how milk travels from the barn to the bottle, and even sample some of the farm’s delicious products. Seasonal events and educational programs make every visit both entertaining and informative, offering a behind‑the‑scenes look at modern dairy farming.

South Mountain Creamery is also deeply committed to sustainability, using environmentally responsible farming practices and working to preserve the land for future generations. Every purchase helps support local farmers, strengthens the regional food system, and keeps agriculture thriving in Maryland.

Whether you’re savoring a scoop of homemade ice cream on a summer afternoon, enjoying fresh milk with breakfast, or exploring the farm with family and friends, South Mountain Creamery delivers more than exceptional dairy products—it offers a genuine connection to the people, animals, and traditions behind every bottle. It’s a true taste of Maryland, fresh from the farm to your table.

THE HISTORY OF FAIRS

Fairs have been an important part of human society for thousands of years, bringing people together to trade goods, celebrate traditions, and enjoy entertainment. While today’s county and state fairs are known for thrilling rides, delicious food, agricultural exhibits, and live performances, their origins date back to ancient civilizations where commerce and community gatherings played a vital role in everyday life.

The earliest fairs can be traced to ancient Egypt, Greece, and Rome, where merchants traveled from distant regions to exchange livestock, textiles, spices, pottery, and other valuable goods. These gatherings were often held during religious festivals, allowing people to combine business with worship and celebration. As trade routes expanded, fairs became increasingly important economic events that connected communities and encouraged cultural exchange.

During the Middle Ages, fairs flourished throughout Europe. Large annual events such as the famous Champagne Fairs in France became major commercial centers where traders from across the continent bought and sold everything from silk and wool to precious metals and exotic spices. These fairs helped stimulate economic growth and played a key role in the development of international trade long before permanent marketplaces became common. They also served as social occasions where musicians, storytellers, and performers entertained crowds while travelers shared news from distant lands.

When European settlers arrived in North America, they brought the tradition of fairs with them. Early American fairs focused primarily on agriculture, giving farmers an opportunity to display their finest livestock, crops, and handcrafted goods. These gatherings encouraged the sharing of farming techniques and recognized excellence through friendly competitions and awards. Agricultural fairs became especially popular during the early nineteenth century as farming organizations sought to improve livestock breeding, crop production, and rural education.

As the United States became more

industrialized, fairs evolved beyond their agricultural roots. Mechanical inventions, new technologies, and educational exhibits were added alongside traditional farming displays. Visitors could learn about the latest innovations while enjoying games, contests, musical performances, and family‑friendly attractions. The combination of education and entertainment helped fairs appeal to a broader audience and established them as annual community traditions.

The late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries saw the rise of amusement rides, carnival games, and elaborate midway attractions. Ferris wheels, roller coasters, and brightly lit carousels transformed fairs into exciting destinations for people of all ages. Food vendors also became an essential part of the experience, introducing regional specialties and creative treats that continue to attract visitors today. Many iconic fair foods, including corn dogs, cotton candy, funnel cakes, and caramel apples, became closely associated with these annual events.

State fairs grew into some of the largest celebrations in the country, showcasing agriculture, education, local businesses, arts, crafts, and entertainment. These events continue to celebrate the achievements of farmers, students, artisans, and entrepreneurs while preserving traditions that have been passed down through generations. Livestock competitions, baking contests, horticultural displays, and youth exhibitions remain central attractions, highlighting the importance of agriculture even as fairs continue to evolve.

Modern fairs blend history with innovation. Alongside classic attractions, many now feature concerts by nationally recognized artists, interactive exhibits, robotics competitions, environmental education, and advanced agricultural technology. Despite these changes, the heart of every fair remains the same: bringing communities together to celebrate local culture, recognize hard work, and create lasting memories.

The enduring popularity of fairs demonstrates their unique ability to adapt while preserving centuries‑old traditions. What began as simple marketplaces where merchants gathered to exchange goods has grown into vibrant celebrations that honor agriculture, encourage community involvement, and provide entertainment for millions of visitors each year. Whether attending a small county fair or a large state fair, visitors continue to participate in a tradition that connects the past with the present and reminds us of the enduring value of gathering together to celebrate community, culture, and shared experiences.

FAIR FOOD

Few experiences capture the excitement of summer quite like a visit to a county or state fair. The bright lights, thrilling rides, live entertainment, and agricultural exhibits all contribute to the fun, but for many visitors, the biggest attraction is the food. Fair food has become a tradition of its own, offering everything from nostalgic classics to outrageous culinary creations that draw crowds year after year.

Some fair foods have remained popular for generations because they are simple, delicious, and closely tied to the fair experience. Corn dogs are a longtime favorite, featuring hot dogs coated in cornmeal batter and fried until golden brown. Funnel cakes are another classic, made from crispy fried batter topped with powdered sugar and often finished with fresh fruit, whipped cream, or chocolate. Cotton candy, with its colorful spun sugar, continues to delight children and adults alike, while kettle corn offers the perfect combination of sweet and salty flavors. Warm soft pretzels and giant smoked turkey legs have also become staples at fairs across the country, giving visitors hearty options alongside sweet treats.

One of the biggest attractions at many state fairs is the opportunity to sample unusual deep‑fried creations. Vendors compete to invent bold new foods that capture attention and tempt adventurous eaters. Fried Oreos, cheesecake, pickles, cookie dough, candy bars, and even ice cream have all become popular attractions. While these indulgent treats may not be everyday foods, they have become part of the fun and excitement that make a trip to the fair so memorable.

Regional traditions also play an important role in fair food. Many fairs celebrate local agriculture and showcase ingredients that reflect the area’s heritage. Visitors in Wisconsin often enjoy fresh cheese curds, while fairs in the South feature slow‑smoked barbecue and other regional specialties. Vermont fairs commonly highlight maple‑flavored desserts, Nebraska fairs celebrate beef dishes, and California fairs often serve refreshing wine slushies and produce‑inspired creations. These local favorites give every fair its own unique character and provide visitors with a taste of the surrounding community.

Modern fair food continues to evolve as vendors introduce creative recipes inspired by current food trends. Loaded fries piled high with gourmet toppings, walking tacos, spicy hot honey chicken, pickle‑flavored snacks, oversized milkshakes, and international street food have become increasingly common. Many of these colorful creations are designed to be as visually appealing as they are delicious, making them popular subjects for social media posts and helping spread excitement about each year’s newest offerings.

Enjoying fair food is often about more than simply satisfying hunger. Sharing large portions with family and friends allows everyone to sample a wider variety of treats without becoming too full. Trying one new item alongside a familiar favorite is a great way to experience the creativity of fair vendors while still enjoying the classics.

Staying hydrated during warm summer weather and visiting food stands during less crowded times can also make the experience more enjoyable.

Fair food remains one of the most beloved traditions of county and state fairs across America. Whether savoring a freshly made funnel cake, enjoying a classic corn dog, or sampling the latest deep‑fried invention, visitors create lasting memories through the shared experience of great food. From timeless favorites to imaginative new creations, fair food continues to celebrate fun, community, and the simple joy of enjoying delicious treats with family and friends.

FRATINO & MATISSE: TO SEE THIS LIGHT AGAIN Two generations. One electric conversation. Contemporary painter Louis Fratino enters into a vibrant dialogue with modern master Henri Matisse in Fratino and Matisse: To See This Light Again. Born in Annapolis and trained at the Maryland Institute College of Art, Fratino spent years studying the Baltimore Museum of Art’s expansive Matisse collection. This influence shines through in his luminous interiors, sensual color, and intimate portrayals of the male figure. This striking exhibition brings Fratino’s paintings together with masterworks by Matisse including figures, interiors, still lifes, and self‑portraits. Side by side, their works ignite a dynamic exchange about color, light, pattern, and the emotional power of painting. Baltimore Museum of Art, through September 6. Learn more at artbma.org.
