Frequently, visitors and residents alike wish they could be in two places at the same time because there is so much to do in the Frederick area. Do you take in a theater production, or do you stand on the banks of a river in the moonlight and count the blinking fireflies?
Frederick is a welcoming place for the arts, including venues for music and theater, art galleries and an everincreasing offering of public art, from sculptures to murals on buildings. You may even see an artist with an easel and a fistful of brushes painting the breathtaking scenery.
Local parks are built around our natural wonders, including South and Catoctin mountains and the Potomac and Monocacy rivers. A section of the famed Appalachian Trail also runs through the county and we have a zoo.
No doubt about it, Frederick is the place to be out and about.
Exposure to art, music, writing and theater is necessary to the life of a community. Frederick is fortunate to be rich in these cultural offerings, whether it’s an internationally known musician appearing at the Weinberg Center for the Arts, a play performed by local actors and written by a Frederick playwright, or artwork displayed at the Delaplaine Arts Center.

In addition to producing the Frederick Shakespeare Festival that is held each summer, the. Endangered Species (Theatre) Project also has a mission to “bring enjoyment and understanding through live theater that proactively focuses on diverse representation.” The group does this by “giving voice to forgotten plays and playwrights, producing plays that increase representation of women over age 40 and other historically excluded artists on the stage, and making vital connection between people of all generations.” www.esptheatre.org
Claude Bauer, co-founder of Monocacy Field Music, a volunteer group of musicians that plays at Civil War sites and observances, began as a reenactor. A long-time lover of music, however, he decided to create the Frederick-based musical group with its Union-era uniforms and fifes and drums. “We were formed primarily to support programs at Monocacy National Battlefield. But we also do other events like for the National Museum of Civil War Medicine,” he was quoted in Frederick Magazine
From morning call to supper and even when someone was going to get punished, they would just stand there and play all day, every day, regardless of the weather,” Baur says of the musicians. “It could be 6 degrees or 96 degrees outside. It didn’t matter…We want to tell their story and also help keep the music alive.”

Public art is embraced in Frederick, especially the creations of artist William Cochran with his Angels in the Architecture murals on buildings throughout Downtown and the Community Bridge on Carroll Creek. His style is lifelike trompe l’oeil (French for “fool the eye”). Yemi, another public art contributor, created portraits of noteworthy people in local history that are featured on the McCutcheon’s building, also near Carroll Creek. Public Art Trail, a walking tour of public art in Downtown Frederick, is hosted by Visit Frederick. The tour includes 17 stops along a two-mile route with two additional locations as part of the Uptown Art Walk. A printed guide is available at the Frederick Visitor Center, 151 S. East St. www.visitfrederick.org
The Middletown and Pleasant Valley area is the setting for professional artists and craftspeople who work from home studios to form the Valley Craft Network. For the past 41 years the group has hosted a Studio Tour, always held the weekend before Thanksgiving, to allow visitors to enjoy the scenery of back roads as well as experience the one-of-a-kind art being created.
The W.F. Moran Bladesmith & Artisan Academy, 4246 Old National Pike, Middletown, opened its doors several feet from the shop in which William Moran had for years created knife masterpieces that were owned worldwide. The state-of-the-art facility features a large forging hall as well as a classroom to teach a variety of blade smithing techniques and other types of artisan crafts, including leatherwork, silver inlay and woodworking. The idea for the academy came after Moran’s death in 2006. The shop includes a museum featuring displays of his knives and awards. www.williammoranmuseum.com www.frederickartscouncil.org

One of Frederick’s most ambitious public art projects, the Carroll Creek Kinetic Art Promenade, continues to grow with the installation and planned additions of more sculptures anchored in the creek that move about in the breeze.
Carroll Creek Kinetic Art Promenade was founded by Bernard Gouin on behalf of the Rotary Club of Carroll Creek in 2020. In spring of that year, the first three sculptures were installed, with more added each year. The project is a privately funded nonprofit organization and all sculptures are privately funded.
More information about Carroll Creek Kinetic Art Promenade can be found at carrollcreekkineticart.org
Even in the gloomiest winter days, there’s a splash of vibrant color to gladden your heart at The Center Sound Mind Body at 28 E. 6th St., where local artist Ronald Layman created an outdoor mural that incorporates blue skies and water lilies. One admirer of the art says it makes her feel peaceful.
The Center, which offers Pilates, yoga, sound therapy and wellness sessions, is owned by Maren Good and Michael Unger, who came up with the design that Layman executed. “I originally wanted something with a gong-like image” reflecting their services, Good says, “but you can’t promote your business,” according to local public art regulations.
Instead, Good went with the idea of “bringing Downtown to uptown,” with a depiction of the Community Bridge in Carroll Creek Park. A mandala on the bridge that’s reflected in the water is a “concept of what we share collectively.” She says Layman expressed it as “bringing the good vibes [of the practice] inside, outside.”
The Frederick Arts Council wanted the mural to encompass the entire wall, Good says, as well as wrapping around the building’s corner. A heron is featured on this portion as a nod to the bird’s Baker Park habitat.
Layman started the project during the summer, finishing last December, and could be seen atop a scaffold under a blazing summer sun with his brushes and a wide-brimmed hat. “All the time people were stopping and complimenting, or they were just curious,” says the fourth-generation artist. Although he has created interior murals, “this is my first big mural in Frederick that people see.”
If it’s August, it’s the Over 70 Show at the Delaplaine Arts Center, 40 S. Carroll St., Frederick, where the artworks by artists age 70 and up are showcased. With a more than 20-year history, the show continues to grow, with hundreds of artists throughout the region taking part. The show offers a wide variety of styles, techniques and interests.
COUNTY
In addition to supplying food to consumers, not to mention wool to be made into clothing, and flowers to decorate the home, Frederick County farmers also offer a world of education and entertainment as they welcome visitors to their fields and barns.
an opportunity for folks to pick-your-own,
Numerous farms and orchards provide an opportunity for folks to pick-your-own, whether it’s strawberries in the spring, blueberries in summer, pumpkins and apples in the fall and finally in December when they can cut their own Christmas tree. Fall is an especially busy time of the year with an abundance of weekend festivals for families to enjoy hayrides, fire off pumpkins canons or wander through a corn maze. Getting up close to barnyard animals is also a fun experience for youngsters and adults as well.
Frederick County’s Office of Agriculture is a good place to start when planning your farm visits. Visit www.homegrownfrederick.com for a listing of farms and their activities.
The granddaddy of agricultural fun is the Great Frederick Fair, held in mid-September at the fairgrounds on East Patrick Street. Visitors can wander through barns filled with animals ranging from a sow with her new-born piglets, to llamas, goats and cattle. Chickens and other poultry can be found in their own building. The fair has a birthing center where calves are welcomed into the world and exhibit halls are filled with the largest pumpkins and perfect ears of field corn. It’s a wonderful way to see where our food originates.
From a connection to nature through the long view of the ridge of Catoctin Mountain to gathering in Downtown Frederick’s Memorial Park to honor military veterans, Frederick County makes good use of the spaces set aside for the public.
COUNTY PARKS & RECREATION
The Frederick County Department of Parks and Recreation maintains a large number of parks. They are committed to the highest level of care for natural and historic resources while making the park facilities and recreational programs available to all. Parks must have walking paths, benches, something for kids to play on and, if it’s a top-tier park, a fountain. Whether it’s the sound of running water or seeing it spray or cascade, fountains remind us of nature’s most necessary resources. In Baker Park, a fountain is prominently gushing in the middle of Culler Lake, and a fountain built in the late 1890s stands outside City Hall. A fountain on North Market and 7th streets sprays the sidewalk area, making it possible for relief from the summer heat.
Most senior citizens are familiar with taking their children, and later their grandchildren, to public parks, realizing the benefits of engaging in the outdoors through exercise and simply feeling the sun on their faces. Parks, they may have realized, also afford the opportunity for socializing.
All the positive facets seen for youngsters are now being bestowed on seniors themselves through Asbury SeniorScapes at Monocacy Village Park, a public park space off East Street designed specifically to meet the unique needs of older adults.
This pioneering park’s design features walking paths, equipment for cardiovascular health, stairs and ramps for improved mobility, as well as balance beams, steppingstones and stability exercises to enhance balance and prevent falls.
The project is the brainchild of Sue Paul, senior director of well-being and brain health for Asbury, a not-for-profit system of continuing care retirement communities. SeniorScapes reflects her passion for senior wellness and draws on her extensive experience as an occupational therapist and commitment to healthy aging and brain function. Paul hopes to make seniorand dementia-friendly parks part of society’s fabric.
“For older adults, having access to social support and opportunities for interaction in park settings is essential for cognitive health and overall well-being,” says Paul.
The park received over $500,000 in funding through a grant from the Delaplaine Foundation, an AARP Community Challenge Grant and a Community Development Block Grant from the City of Frederick. The park’s name reflects seed money from Asbury Communities and the fundraising support and guidance of Asbury Communities’ philanthropic arm, The Asbury Foundation. Asbury Communities is among the nation’s 20 largest not-for-profit systems of continuing care retirement communities with award-winning senior wellness.

Baseball enthusiasts need not travel to Baltimore or Washington, D.C., to see plays on the diamond, not when we have the Frederick Keys, a minor league baseball team that has been here since 1989. The team plays at Nymeo Field at Harry Grove Stadium.
The Frederick Flying Cows, a professional basketball team, had its premier season in 2024, playing home games in the Hood College gymnasium, BB&T Arena. The season starts in March and runs through May, with league playoffs in June.
Frederick County is the place for sports enthusiasts, whether it’s playing in a league or sitting in the bleachers watching the action and supporting your team. Following is a look at the various sports represented in our area:
Frederick Skyline Club de Futbol, with Joel Ramirez as its founder and president, is a minor league soccer team with both a men’s and women’s team. Additionally, Ramirez has established a youth program. “Our money comes from sponsorships, donations and fundraisers,” he says. The program uses fields at county parks but expects to have a solid home either at a college or high school.
Take a spin into the world of Frederick Roller Derby, founded in 2021. In addition to in-house scrimmages, Frederick Roller Derby has a team that plays against other squads such as the Patuxent Roller Derby in Columbia and the Rocktown Rollers in Harrison, Va., among others.
We are a well-fed place, starting with our farmers and growers who show up at the many markets around Frederick County as well as provide the fresh, less-traveled ingredients used by our restaurant chefs.
The area’s many restaurants are an attraction to out-of-town visitors as are the vineyards and increasing number of breweries and distilleries.
For our residents, the wide range of taste offerings makes it possible to experience the world without leaving home, whether it’s Italian, French or dishes from South America.
Bites & Bevs — Frederick Restaurant Week is held in March with chefs pulling out all the stops.
Our chefs are squarely putting Frederick on the culinary map. With an impressive inventory of restaurants, both in and outside of the city, there’s no need to go to nearby Washington or Baltimore for fabulous food. In fact, many of those people are coming here.
And it’s no surprise that we have chefs turning up on Food Network competitions as well as creating other buzz in the restaurant world.
Here are your tasty options; enjoy!

The latest brewery to join Frederick’s lineup is Sandbox Brewhouse, 880 N. East St., open in what was once Rockwell Brewery. Alina Lightchaser and Willow Watkins, two of the Sandbox owners, say they were excited about the venture as the space was being renovated. The beer selection “will have a little bit of everything from IPAs to lagers and a classic stout.”
Watkins says they will also try their hand at tea-infused beer as well as “the idea of lots of fruits” to add to the taste experience. Beer is not the only brew at Sandbox. In the mornings it offers coffee and pastries.
The women, along with Nate Ridgeway, Suni Watkins, Josh Phipps and John Burroughs say the business is about more than what is served. “It’s a welcome space for events,” Watkins says, from knitting groups and yoga classes to book clubs and other groups. Live bands on the weekend and food trucks are also in the mix. “There’s always something on our calenda. And we’re dog-friendly,” she says, with plans for a dog park behind the building. The owners even feature all their dogs on the website at www.sandboxbrewhouse.com.

In addition to producing awardwinning wines and satisfying countless partakers since 1971, the third generation of the Aellen family, owners of Linganore Winecellars, 13601 Glissans Mill Road, Mount Airy, have focused equal attention on environmental stewardship as “one of our foremost values.”
Highlighting this is the recent opening of Simple Theory Wine Co., 37 N. Market St. The tasting lounge is located on the second floor, accessible by an elevator. In addition to wine, food specifically designed to enhance the sipping experience is available such as meats, cheeses,

pickled vegetables, crackers and bread.
Simple Theory is “the contemporary expression of winemaking featuring a blend of time-proven practices with a thoughtful approach to the art and science of winemaking,” according to the owners. They practice environmentally friendly “dry farming” where mowing the vineyard is minimized to promote a biodiverse ecosystem. They also favor solar power, recycling and having a single vineyard to produce their wine. They recently acquired a 41-acre site, a portion to be planted in grapes this year.
Most folks have probably visited the vineyard, a picturesque spot with rolling hills and the site of weddings and music fests. Now you can enjoy the wine at a cozy spot Downtown. www.simpletheorywines.com

Key Lime Pie isn’t just an awesome dessert, it’s also the flavor profile of moonshine crafted by Rosie Cheeks Distillery, 10229 Woodsboro Pike, Walkersville, and winner of a silver medal in the American Distilling Institute’s 2024 International Spirits Competition. Additionally, distillery owners Kristy and Lee Rosebush garnered three bronze awards for their other creations.
American Distilling Institute is the largest small-batch, independently owned craft distillery association in the world. Founded in 2003, it supports the diverse and inclusive craft distilling community. Rosie Cheeks, which opened in 2022, uses a recipe that has been in the family, and they are constantly trying out new flavors. The moonshine comes in Mason jars and is served in local restaurants and available at the farm and in area liquor stores. www.rosiecheeksdistilling.com

Frederick is older than the nation itself and was a vital part in the country’s story, including during the French and Indian War, the Revolutionary War and important Civil War battles, with local churches turning worship spaces into hospitals for wounded soldiers.
Frederick received visits from historical figures such as Abraham Lincoln, Benjamin Franklin, Robert E. Lee, Winston Churchill, John Adams, and George Washington. With the creation of presidential retreat Camp David outside of Thurmont, modern day presidents have visited.
Some of history’s notable figures called Frederick their home—Francis Scott Key, author of The Star-Spangled Banner and fashion designer Claire McCardell are just two examples.

Frederick is in one of the country’s most beautiful spots geographically, but even more important are the friendly, ready-to-help residents who call this place home. We have people willing to run for elected office, work with civic organizations and non-profits to improve our communities and extend a welcome hand to strangers. Some even offer to shovel neighbors’ sidewalks when it snows.
The strength of community starts with our youth who are involved in scouts, 4-H and other clubs, to the senior citizen crowd that continues to offer guidance and a hand. In addition to saluting our good neighbors, how about considering being a volunteer in these many organizations?
As the largest county geographically in Maryland, Frederick County covers 664 square miles of mountains, rivers, farm fields and historic towns and cities filled with beautiful architecture carefully preserved from the past. This year the county is celebrating its 275th anniversary.
The county has a charter form of government with a county executive and council and there are 12 incorporated municipalities, including Frederick City, the county seat.
