I’m delighted to welcome you to the 2021

Learning & Teaching Expo in Hong Kong – this year we are excited to be back as an in-person event, where it’s all about showcasing fresh possibilities as we reimagine the future in the wake of COVID-19. The UK Department for International Trade (DIT) is proud to support the Expo. We have partnered with UK suppliers to present to you the UK Pavilion at the Learning & Teaching Expo with a packed programme of exciting workshops and demonstrations.

The UK has an outstanding reputation for excellence in education and skills. The UK education supplies sector is also widely recognised as being at the forefront of innovation. School closures due to COVID-19 are affecting learners worldwide. The disruption has imposed a fundamental shift in the mode of delivery in schools, from traditional face-to-face provision to online learning, creating substantial opportunities for Edtech companies. The COVID-19 pandemic has changed the global education landscape. Due to sustained class suspension, distance learning and eLearning solutions have overnight become the new normal. The goal of implementing computational thinking and coding education at upper primary level is to give students hands-on experience to develop the necessary knowledge, skills and attitudes to face the growing digital economy era. With Marty the Robot students are introduced to the basics of robotics and coding skills which includes electronic circuits, sensors, connectors and simple mechanics. In recent years Information Technologies have been developing very rapidly. As educators, there is a need to equip our children with proficient technology skills. Artificial Intelligence, Internet of Things, Robotics have been introduced to DGS ICT curriculum a few years ago to allow students to fully engage in learning these topics. Marty the Robot has become an essential teaching toolkit. 3D modelling, computer programming and robotics technology has established itself as an important tools and technologies in many engineering applications. With Marty the Robot students are able to use free online 3D modelling software (such as Tinkercad) to draw 3D models, and then use a 3D printer to print out the accessories from Marty the Robot. In addition, Marty the Robot is compatible with micro:bit, making students’ learning more diverse. Can you grow hedgehogs from other metal salts? What are anthocyanins and what do we use them for? Join us to find out! Raspberry Pi enables coding skills to be delivered in more accessible, cost-effective, and fun ways to encourage children to learn. It uses existing technology – chips from mobile phones – to build low-cost, basic computers that promote programming in schools.

Meet Kitt, the new and exclusive crosscurricular companion robot

Kitt enables learners to work independently, engaging with the robot to gather evidence of progress. Teachers can differentiate effectively using Kitt by personalising the resources on each device.

Inclusivity and accessibility is at the heart of Kitt’s design. Teachers are able to customise each Kitt to the needs of his user through, adjustment of volume and brightness, full control of haptic feedback and utilisation of voice prompts. Kitt includes a braille cell on the centre button for ease of use. Kitt behaves like a Flash memory stick. When connected to a computer, either via USB cable (provided) or docking station, teachers can drag and drop audio, video and image files directly onto the robot. These can then be viewed and/or listen too, using the controls on Kitt’s tummy. 14
