Spotlight on buying and selling property during the pandemic

Being stuck at home gives people plenty of opportunity to dream about possibilities such as selling up in town and moving to the country to enjoy the fresh air and more relaxed lifestyle. But is it the right time to buy and sell?

Here are some of the benefits of buying and selling now: 1. Interest rates are low - Responding to the current climate, the RBA reduced the official cash rate to its lowest ever level of just 0.25% with many of the banks following suit. It has never been easier to service a home loan.

Government grants are available - In addition to the low interest rates, both State and Commonwealth governments are offering financial assistance and incentives for first home buyers entering the property market. This includes stamp duty relief as well as first home owner grants. There is also the Commonwealth's HomeBuilder scheme providing financial assistance for those wanting to build a new home or undertake significant renovations.

The Real Estate Institute of Victoria, working with the State Government has confirmed that a person, (except residents of metropolitan Melbourne under the new Stage 4 restrictions), is able to attend a private home inspection anywhere in Victoria. There will not be any open houses or on-site auctions. “Housing is an essential service, and we are relieved that people are able to travel within the state to inspect a property that may wish to rent or purchase.� Ms Calnan, president of the REIV has said.

There is also confirmation that you can still move home during the lockdown, even if you are travelling between restricted and non-restricted areas, but you need to follow strict guidelines.
