The Mandy & David Team: The Art of Preparing for Market In a sophisticated real estate market known for its discerning buyers and, at times, its extremely competitive nature, preparation for the marketplace can be crucial. “We spend a lot of time with sellers talking about presentation and what they can do to their home to broaden its appeal,” says coprincipal, David Getson. “Obviously, things like de-cluttering, painting and staging are important, but we are also able to suggest upgrades or renovations that will pay off at the table. “With developers, we like to be involved as early on as possible, even weighing in on initial drawings,” continues Mills. “How a space gets designed is important - the proportions of the kitchen, how large the island should be, where you put the laundry, etc.” Currently, the team is working with Jagan Santhanam to develop a six-unit building, The Cranford, at 1823

What would you like homeowners to know about you as an individual?

MM: I think it’s important for our clients to know that I am a Washingtonian, just like them. I’m raising my family here, I work here, I’m on the PTA, I shop at local stores like GoodWood and Salt & Sundry. I adore this city! Because I know the city so well, it makes me a better Realtor. DG: I’m actually a bit of an introvert and can be shy. Real estate is something that I love, so it is an avenue for me to be expressive. Although I have more than a decade of experience and fully apply the knowledge that comes from helping hundreds of sellers and buyers, I never forget that any single deal I am working on is the most important one to the people that have hired me, Mandy and our team.

Where is your favorite place to escape in the District? MM: I love my neighborhood, Mt. Pleasant. I love that I can hear the lions roar from my front porch, shopping at Each Peach Market, grabbing a cup of coffee at Elle. It’s amazing to walk through the streets and run into so many friends and neighbors. DG: My favorite escape is between my home and the arboretum. My house is like what the Fortress of Steel is to Superman. And the arboretum is one of the most peaceful places in the city -- even on the busiest spring day.

What are your hobbies and/or passions? MM: My husband, Chris, and I enjoy traveling – Miami, Puerto Rico, any beach, and I’m there. I also adore fashion. I love shopping and NY Fashion Week is everything. I adore following the designers and seeing what’s on trend with each new season. DG: I hope it doesn’t sound trite but helping people through real estate is a passion. I strongly believe that each person’s reason, even if there is more than one person involved, for buying and selling, is so personal. I like determining the real reason and making that reason a reality. And I love to read, laugh and make other people laugh.

Do you currently support any community nonprofit projects and why? MM: This city has been very good to me, so I give back by investing in the community. I’m on the board of DC WISE and Fair Chance, which let me use my skills to help those in need. I always support my kids’ schools. For example, I started the Mt. Pleasant House & Garden Tour to benefit Bancroft Elementary, and the team always supports Amazing Life Games, where I also serve on the board. I also work to support Maret, where my oldest goes to school. DG: I’m very proud of the work that the Mandy and David Team does in the community. free up time for my team and Mandy to be as directly involved as possible. I am definitely the man behind the woman on the charity circuit.

What is your favorite vacation destination? MM: My husband and I love going to Miami. It’s so relaxing. We eat delicious food at restaurants like Yardbird and The Bazaar, relax at hotel pools, and soak in all the beautiful architecture. Last time we went, we took the kids, which was amazing and let us explore a whole new aspect of the city. DG: For me, the company is more important than the location. Although I do love any place with poolside cocktails, sunshine and an umbrella both over my head and in my drink.

What is your favorite home design/decor trend? MM: Oh, I have so many! I love mixing metals in hardware; I’m really excited about honed granite and marble counters – any kind of matte texture in a kitchen adds so much depth and richness. I love dark trim, too – we just painted our trim at home navy blue. It feels so fresh! DG: My favorite trend is flex space or unorthodox use of spaces. I love a good set of accordion doors to make a space smaller or larger depending on how it is being used any given day.

What do you love most about DC? MM: DC has all of the benefits of a big city – great restaurants, world-class museums, amazing shopping – with the feel of a small town. I love all of the little neighborhoods throughout the city, each with its own character and culture. DG: There is so much to love about this amazing city and the people that live here. I think it is intrinsically filled with people that want to make a difference. I love that it is a giant melting pot of people, and I love that we are one of the fittest cities in the US, as well as one of the most educated. I am proud of my contributions here, and I am proud to be a native Washingtonian.

For those of us in real estate, we know walkability is a big buzzword right now, and for those of us living in the city, we know just how impor tant it is. Let's take a closer look at what walkability means for DC homeowners.

Why Walkability Is Important

1 Not only are you near stores and amenities, but you are also most likely near where many community and neighborhood events take place . Hate tr ying to find par king at the weekly farmer s mar ket? Problem solved.

4 Public tr anspor tation tends to follow along business districts and denser areas, so being walkable to those areas also means being walkable to the best public transit options.

2 Watch your trips to the gas station dwindle when you are in a walkable neighborhood. In fact, you may even be able to reduce the number of car s your family owns. These savings add up over time!

5 Accessibility, especially dur ing winter weather, is much better in walkable areas. Roads are plowed quickly, sidewalks are salted often, and with stores nearby, there's no need to drive in the snow.

How to Find Walkability Obviously, staying within city limits is a great way to ensure walkability. However, that location comes with a price tag, so lucky for us, suburban town centers are a booming development trend. In the DC area, check out Chevy Chase, Clarendon, Tysons Corner, and Silver Spring.
