Charity Home Goes Under The Hammer Sunday 11th September saw Wayne Gardner Reserve filled with picnic rugs layed out, a sausage sizzle cooking, jumping castles for the kids and free show bags and soccer balls handed out courtesy of generous sponsors all wanting to support Kids of Macarthur Health Foundation, a children’s charity which aims to purchase the most technological paediatric medical equipment available to enhance the level of health care offered in our local hospitals.

Speaking with Bruce Hanrahan, Chairman of Kids of Macarthur Health Foundation, you could see the pride and humble feeling he felt towards all that have made this event happen. Explaining that the funds, no matter how big or small would make a huge difference to the lives of children needing medical care within our local hospitals.

Event organiser Mikayla Sawyers from Fairmont Homes NSW had this to say, “We are so proud and overwhelmed with all the support we received from the suppliers, contractors and the general public not only in relation to the building process of the charity home but also with raising awareness and helping with the auction day. The day was a success, it was great to see the community come together to support such an important cause.

The Summer Argyle Affair The Argyle Affair was born from a humble idea to showcase local talent and bring together creative people and ideas.

Founders, Peta Borg and Brooke Murphy both reside in Macarthur, have 6 children between them and share a passion for bespoke design and production. “It seemed such a shame for there not to be a space for local talent to come together, so we decided to create one” says Peta.

Getting A Service My car is almost up for rego again and so before I take it for a pink slip I thought it might be helpful to have a little pre-rego service done. I wasn’t anticipating anything bad - the car is running well - but I figured a closer investigation might reveal some areas that could do with a tighten, or a grease and oil change. As it turned out my brakes (which I remembered had been a little squeaky) were in fact due for replacement pads. Given their state I’m not sure exactly how close to not getting a pink slip I would have come.

Now, it might be a bit of a stretch but I’d like to invite you to think about your marriage. It seems as I’ve been engaging with couples recently (both inside and outside the church) I’ve found a lot of good people with lots of real stress in this vital area of their life. And why not? With long commute times, sick and noisy kids, mortgage and other money pressures, not to mention family conflicts - there’s any number of reasons why marriages in places like where we live can be under enormous strain behind our newly finished brick facades.

At NewLife this month (Saturday October 22nd) we’re running a one day marriage seminar called, “A Day Together.” It’s a positive, practical, and powerful day designed to strengthen your marriage - wherever it’s up to.

Night Work To Progress The Northern Road Upgrade

Roads and Maritime Services advises motorists changed traffic conditions will be in place for essential night work on The Northern Road Upgrade, between The Old Northern Road, Narellan and Peter Brock Drive, Oran Park from tonight.

The Australian and NSW governments are committed to the growth of western Sydney and are pushing ahead with the planned 35 kilometre upgrade of The Northern Road between Narellan and South Penrith.

Work to widen a 3.3 kilometre section between The Old Northern Road at Narellan and Peter Brock Drive at Oran Park is already under way.

To reduce impact on motorists, work to build temporary road surface and install new utilities will be carried out at night until Friday 4 November between 7pm and 6pm, weather permitting and excluding weekends.

Night work will be carried out on The Northern Road at three locations including just north of The Old Northern Road

intersection, the Peter Brock Drive intersection and the Porrende Street and Fairwater Drive intersection.

In addition to this, work continues to be carried out on weekdays between 7am and 6pm and from 8am to 1pm on Saturdays. No work will be carried out on Monday 3 October due to the public holiday.

While there will be some noise and lighting in place for this work every effort will be made to minimise the impact on nearby residents and businesses.

Road users are advised to follow the direction of traffic controllers and all signs, including reduced speed limits.

Electronic signs will also be in place to notify motorists and nearby residents.

Motorists are thanked for their patience while this important work is under way.

The work forms part of the jointly funded $3.6 billion Western Sydney Infrastructure Plan to deliver a multi-billion dollar roads package for one of Australia’s fastest growing regions, ahead of the planned airport at Badgerys Creek opening in the mid 2020s.

This year, the Statement is titled: ‘A Place at the Table: Social justice in an ageing society’. The Statement celebrates the value and dignity of older people in Australian life. It challenges us to recognise their significant contribution to society.

Now, in what some would rightly describe as “an exponentially growing area with many new and young families moving in on a regular basis”, it is easy for us to forget that Oran Park and the surrounding suburbs aren’t just the home of people under the age of 40. Many older people are making their home here.

And they are making their home not only in a number of the independent living units that have been built by churches and other providers, but they are also moving into more ‘traditional’ homes.

As Sr Patty Fawkner SGS said recently at the launch of the Statement, all of us – no matter what our age or where we live – are blessed to have older people in our midst, for they teach us some important ‘life lessons’ such as: • Be grateful.

• Don’t just visit this life.

• Develop interests now.

• Be present in the present.

• Humbly accept diminishment.

• Smile.

• Let go.

• Be married to amazement.

• God’s grace is all I need.

And the one lesson that sums up all of this – the core of Jesus’ whole life and teaching: keep working on love. Keep working on love.

As residents of Oran Park and the surrounding suburbs may we open our eyes, our minds and our hearts so that we may see that we are all on life’s journey and need each other’s respect and support, whatever stage of life we are at. Boxes for Christmas Christmas time for most is about spending time with family, opening presents, eating lots of great food and making special memories with those we love but unfortunately not everyone gets to celebrate in this way.

We often forget about the ladies and gentleman who live in aged care facilities who may not have any family or friends to visit them on these special occasions.

Margaret Chivers from Boxes for Christmas has acknowledged this, and for the past 7 years has grown a local charity into a national awareness event all around Australia to put that smile back on elderly people that are so often forgotten by simply buying gifts, wrapping them and delivering them to aged care facilities all around the country on Christmas Day. Last year resulted in a whopping 1800 gifts being given.

Every year the list of recipients grow and therefor more assistance is needed to continue this unique and wonderful charity.

The Ultimate Training Experience Burns Outdoor Obstacle Training, located in Bringelly, is the ultimate training experience for adults and children of any fitness level that is challenging, unique and fun.

The business recently celebrated their first year anniversary late last month, after taking a total of nine months to be built. The activities that the facility offers include obstacle training for beginners (lessons in this class), kid’s obstacle training where all children aged 6+ are taken through the lesson on obstacles, boot camps for adults and teenagers, practice sessions for those experienced, family training sessions and school holidays for children.

Burns Outdoor Obstacle Training also host birthday parties, charity events, sports team bonding sessions, and corporate functions. The costs are $30 per person for an adult’s obstacle training technique training session which is three hours and $20 for those who do not require the lesson, $20 per person for the children’s obstacle training session which is two hours and $12 for boot camps which are a one-hour class.

When it comes to conquering the obstacles, Owners Wayne and Lorelai Burns have this advice; “Most obstacles require some practise with technique specific to each one. There are often a few different methods to completing an obstacle, often it’s about learning the different methods and seeing what you personally feel more comfortable with” said Lorelai.

Wayne and Lorelai are both passionate about fitness and staying healthy; “We want to get more children and adults active. We want people to see that fitness can be fun and does not need to be a chore. We want to see more people come here and realise that these activities are what we often did as children and then were considered play. We would also like people to gain not only strength and fitness from attending here but also feel like they are part of a friendly community that is both inspiring and encouraging of one another” they explained.

1. Process flour, sugar, cocoa and butter until mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs. Add egg yolk. Process until dough just comes together, adding 2 teaspoons of cold water if necessary. Turn pastry onto a lightly floured surface. Knead until just smooth. Shape into a disc.

Cover with plastic wrap. Refrigerate for 30 minutes.

2. Preheat oven to 180°C/160°C fan-forced. Line 2 baking trays with baking paper. Roll out pastry between 2 sheets of baking paper until 5mm thick. Using a 5.5cm cutter, cut 12 rounds from dough. Place rounds, 3cm apart, on prepared trays. Refrigerate for 10 minutes.

3. Bake for 10 to 12 minutes or until light golden. Cool on trays for 5 minutes. Transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

4. Line a tray with baking paper. Using a small pastry brush, spread a little melted chocolate onto the top of 1 biscuit. Working quickly, dip the outside of 1 cone into chocolate, turning to coat all over. Stick the cone onto the biscuit. Place onto prepared tray. Working quickly, decorate cone with M&Ms. Repeat with remaining biscuits, melted chocolate, ice-cream cones and M&Ms. Refrigerate for 20 minutes or until set. Tie ribbon around base of each hat. Serve.

• 8 Scoops Vanilla Ice-cream • 1 Litre Lime Soft Drink, Chilled • 4 Orange Snake Lollies • 4 Green Snake Lollies Method 1. Place 2 scoops of ice-cream into 4 tall glasses. Top up with soft drink.

2. Arrange 1 orange and 1 green snake lolly in the frothy top of each drink. Serve immediately.

Be mindful and respectful that not all people in Australia have taken on this ever growing tradition, here are some tips to make it a fun, safe and enjoyable time for everyone.  For those at home celebrating, decorate your front door with a pumpkin or a lantern to show you are participating, this lets trick or treaters know they are welcome.  Teach kids to demonstrate manners when taking treats, and to only take wrapped lollies and enough for themselves.  Decorate costumes and bags with reflective tape or stickers and, if possible, choose light colours and make sure it the right size to prevent trips and falls.  Choose face paint and makeup whenever possible instead of masks, which can obstruct a child’s vision.  Have kids carry glow sticks or flashlights to help them see and be seen by drivers.  Slow down and be especially alert in residential neighbourhoods. Children are excited on Halloween and may move in unpredictable ways.  Popular trick or treat times are between 5.30pm – 9.30pm.

Catherine Field Scouts Now Recruiting

The First Catherine Field Scout Group was first registered on the 22/5/1964 and has been in operation continually since that time. The Group has over this period provided scouting for youth between the ages of 7 to 18 years.

The Group currently offers scouting to both boys and girls between the ages of 7 to 15 years. As you would be aware the scouting movement is a worldwide organisation and the largest youth organisation in the world and has celebrated 100 years since foundation a few years ago.

The Group has varied in its number of members and the

number of sections over the years. Being located in a semi-rural area, it has traditionally been smaller than a city group. The area that it has traditionally attracted its members has aged and the number of youth in this area has reduced. The area is being redeveloped to city sized lots and is hoped to result in additional members being attracted. The current uniformed members are now only 5 and without additional members both youth and adult it is a concern the Group could close. The Group has 3 very experienced leaders who have almost a combined total of 60 years as leader who are keen to share.

Scouting offers a wide range of activities and the opportunity to learn new skills. These include such things as craft, hikes, camping, outdoor cooking, caving, rock climbing, canoeing, bushcrafts, flying in a Scout plane, a variety of badges can be achieved, visits to a variety of places of interest, community activities such as tree planting, making new friends and lots more fun adventures. The Group involvement in the above and other activities depends on the youthâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s age and choice at the time.

The aim of Scouting is to encourage the physical, intellectual, social, emotional and spiritual development of young people (both boys and girls) so that they take a constructive place in society as responsible citizens, and as a member of their local, national and international communities.

Being a Scout means you are a member of the largest youth organisation in the world and have a wide range of activates and the opportunity to make new friends.

The Group meets Monday nights from 7pm at the Scout Hall, 170 Catherine Field Road (next to Fire Station), Catherine Fields.

How Many Super Funds Do You Have?

If you have changed jobs, changed your name or moved house, chances are you may have lost track of where your super is invested.

The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) estimates lost superannuation to be worth around $16.8 billion as at 31 December 20141.

By tracking down and consolidating your super accounts, you will save having to pay multiple sets of administration fees. Over the years, this could add up to thousands of dollars towards your final superannuation benefit.

Benefits Of Consolidating Your Super • Reduced fees: paying only one administration and/or member fee means additional fees are not eating away your retirement savings. For example, if you're paying $5 per month in member fees on three different accounts, you're paying at least $180 per year in member fees.

• It's easier to keep track of the growth of your super savings by having your contributions go into one fund. What's more, you'll receive only one statement or fund update, meaning less paperwork to manage.

• It allows you to develop a focused and effective retirement investment strategy, as you don't have a number of neglected, smaller accounts that you lose track of, which get eaten away by fees and inflation.

Things you should consider Insurance Your existing super fund may include death, total and permanent disablement and/or income protection cover. If you want to maintain the same or a greater level of insurance, check with your new super fund if this cover can be established before closing your existing super fund otherwise you may be in a position of having no insurance cover.

Time Out Of The Market It generally takes several weeks to close an existing super fund and transfer the funds to a new super fund. This is because the underlying investments in your existing super fund have to be sold and underlying investments in your chosen super fund purchased. During this time, a portion of your funds are likely to be invested in cash rather than your selected assets. This means if the value of your selected assets rise you won't get the full benefit, but if the value drops, you would receive a better return from the cash investment.

Fees and costs All super funds charge fees. The fund's product disclosure statement outlines the fees and costs associated with exiting your super fund.

Spring Is Here... Could Your Dog Be Suffering From Hay Fever?

Have you ever wondered if your dog might get hay fever?

Dogs certainly suffer from allergies but the symptoms are a bit different from human hay fever, including: • Foot licking • Itchy or smelly ears, sometimes with a discharge • Scratching, licking, nibbling or biting the skin • Rubbing the face, belly or tail • Hives Sometimes, these symptoms look like they are ‘habits’ or a sign of anxiety. But nearly always, itchy skin is causing genuine irritation for our poor pets, and they relieve it any way they can.

The good news is that allergies aren’t life threatening, but they can make us and our pets miserable and very uncomfortable.

For some dogs, every Spring and Summer is a bad time; for others, their symptoms continue all year round.

There is unfortunately no cure for allergy, but many things can help.

• Regularly use a good quality flea product; there are lots of excellent ones on the market. In general, products from your

pet shop or vet are better than those from the supermarket.

Dogs can be allergic to flea bites, and they can be itchy from them even IF YOU AREN’T SEEING FLEAS. • Fish oils are a safe and inexpensive choice, but don’t expect miracles.

• There are many shampoos and conditioners available; look for something that is soothing (some have oatmeal or aloe vera), and only use ‘medicated’ products on your vets advice • Tablets are often the most effective option. There are a number of new, reliable and safe medications being used for treating dogs with allergies, which your vet can prescribe.

Allergic dogs can also benefit from a desensitisation program.

This is a safe and holistic approach to treating allergies which has the potential to be very effective.
