In just a few months, Oran Park Town will be opening the latest and greatest skate park in South Western Sydney. With skate bowls catering from beginners to highly advanced skaters, the area has been crying out for this facility.

“I honestly can’t wait! Convic have built some of the best skate parks around Australia and I’m stoked that I’ll have an amazing new facility to use that’s so close to home. It is going to be extremely beneficial for so many local youths, and potentially open the door for more careers like mine” said Warick Beynon, professional scooter rider.

Julia Reserve will also include a parkour facility, multi-use courts, kick-about areas, ping-pong tables and recreational facilities such as shelters, shared-use pathways, seating and multiple bio-retention basins.

Along with the Skate Park is the Youth and Recreation Centre, getting built by Hutchison Builders. The expected practical completion is December 2019, and the handover to Council is expected to be in March 2020. The Centre will include offices, break out rooms, cultural activity spaces, meeting rooms, kitchen facilities and a performance space.

Oran Park Town residents, in particular our younger community, have been wanting a skate park in Oran Park, so it’s brilliant to know we will be opening the skate park before Christmas” said Mick Owens, GM Greenfields Development Company.

With the 2019/2020 season now under way, Campbelltown Collegians Cricket Club have reached an amazing milestone, with the local club celebrating it’s 50th Anniversary this year.

The Gregory Hills based club first formed in 1969, when an Under 11 Boys team was entered in the Camden District Cricket Association from St. John The Evangelist Primary School. Some of the Dads involved were also the founders of the Campbelltown Catholic Club.

“We adopted the Collegians name in the early 1970’s and we ran as junior and senior administrations, until we merged them in 2010 which coincided with our 40th Anniversary. The club has had as many as 20 teams in junior and senior competitions and have won over 30 premierships across the ages and grades we have participated in. We have also had a long-standing partnership with St Gregory’s College, which to this day is our home ground and training facility” said Alan Bell, Patron of the Campbelltown Collegians Cricket Club.

Over the years, the “Collies” have been associated with many community-based programs. This has included Active After School Activities for local primary schools, MILO In2Cricket – where their young cricketers had the opportunity to play during the lunch interval at the Sydney Cricket Ground and NAIDOC Week activities in Bradbury. For the last five years, the club has run an All-Abilities program for disabled and handicapped children at St Gregory’s College, which saw their President win a national competition for Homegrown Heroes during the BBL. “The Club is known in the area as the ‘Family Club’. It is this sense of sport for enjoyment and inclusion of all that has made us a club to be admired. There is a strong sense of community and the players, committee and supporters all contribute to what we believe is the true spirit of cricket. This was acknowledged by the District umpires, who awarded our club the inaugural Spirit of Cricket Award for Fair Play. We are all proud of this award” explained Alan.

They will be celebrating the milestone with a formal dinner on 21st March 2020 at the Campbelltown Golf Club.

Grace’s Sweet Idea

Hi everyone!

My name is Kobhi and I am 9 years old. I love to help my Mum and Dad cook yummy food in the kitchen.

Each month, I will share with you some of my favourite recipes. Oh yeah, make sure you always have an adult helping you cook.

Kobhi

Cookies & Cream Ice Cream

Ingredients

600ml of cream One can of condensed milk One teaspoon of vanilla essence Five chocolate cookies Method

1. Your adult helper needs to beat the cream with a mixer until it starts to get thick (Mum calls that thicken).

2. Add the vanilla essence and beat it until a lightly whipped cream is made. This is another step for your helper.

3. Add the condensed milk. Make sure you keep beating it until it starts to get thick and turns into a nice cream.

4. Crush the cookies. This is my favourite step! Try not to eat the cookies ; ) 5. The next step for your helper is to keep beating the cream and to add the cookies (Yummo) 6. Pour all the ingredients into a container that has a lid on it to seal it. Put it into the freezer until it goes hard. We made the ice cream at night and put it in the freezer overnight for about 8 hours.

7. Ready to serve.

If you’ve got a sweet tooth, then 12-year-old Grace Clarke may just have the answer for you! The Gregory Hills student has just started her own business, Grace’s Sweets, where she sells her very own cupcakes, slices and delicious treats that she bakes herself.

Grace started her business this year, after finding out about the local Bubs to Tweens Indoor Market.

“She has been helping me bake since she was a little girl, but the past couple of years she has been baking and decorating all on her own. When the opportunity came up, Grace was very excited to have the chance to actually start selling her cupcakes. This is her dream” said Kylie Clarke, Grace’s mother to the Oran Park Gazette.

The talented kidpreneur bakes all her products from scratch.

There are no preservatives or additives, just fresh ingredients like real eggs and milk. She also makes dairy free and egg free/ vegan items on request.

“I am so proud of the passion, pride and commitment Grace puts into her business. Seeing her speak confidently and engaging with her customers is impressive. I see the hours she puts in and the juggles between school and other commitments, but she never gives up or gives half an effort.

She is committed to making sure her treats are always made to a high standard” said Kylie.

“I really enjoy baking and decorating and meeting and speaking to new people. I love the expression on people’s faces when they bite into their sweet treats, the positive feedback I get and especially the returning customers” beamed Grace.

“Grace would love to continue to take orders and create desserts for people in her community. She is always trying to learn new things to improve her skills in creating new and exciting designs and products” ended Kylie.

One Step Closer to the Camden Edition of Monopoly Camden Council is proud to present the Camden Edition Monopoly, which is now in production!

The artwork has been finalised and 2,000 copies of the game are currently being produced.

One of the most exciting elements of the Camden Edition was selecting the locations. Council surveyed the community, asking for feedback on the locations they felt should be included on the board, and received more than 3,500 responses. The 22 locations selected include Camden Airport, Leppington Train Station, The Old St Thomas Chapel, St John's Anglican Church, St Paul's Catholic Church, Narellan Sports Hub, Teen Ranch, Birriwa Reserve Outdoor Youth Space, Mater Dei Chapel, Gledswood Homestead, Camelot House, Belgenny Farm, Historic Carrington Centennial Hospital, Harrington Park Homestead, Argyle Street, Camden, Camden Showground, Camden Bicentennial Equestrian Park, Australian Botanic Garden, Mount Annan, Macarthur Park, Camden Town Farm, Oran Park Library and Cobbitty Village.

Mayor of Camden, Cr Theresa Fedeli, thanked the 12 sponsors for their involvement.

“It was so important we had supportive organisations on board because the money we receive from the sale of this game will be donated to Lifeline Macarthur and the Camden Wollondilly Domestic Violence Committee” Cr Fedeli said.

“We want to raise as much money as we can for these two very deserving organisations.

“We’d like to thank all sponsors, particularly our gold sponsors Narellan Town Centre, The Hermitage, Gledswood Hills, Meals on Wheels and Plus Fitness. Each organisation has just approved their token for the game, and they all look great!”

The game’s silver and bronze sponsors include Harcourts Paramount Real Estate, Camden Hire, The Mac Credit Union, Clintons Toyota, Harrington Estates, Grimes Finance and Mortgages and Narellan Carpet Court.

Narellan Town Centre General Manager, Brad Page, said there was no way they’d let the sponsorship opportunity pass.

“This initiative is a great community project and Narellan Town Centre is as local as it gets” Mr Page said.

“It’s a classic, timeless game that connects family and friends.

The opportunity to have a local edition of an all-time family favourite is something we believe residents will be proud of to pull out of their cupboards”.

The game will first be available for purchase at the Jacaranda Festival, in November. It will then be available for purchase from Camden Council administration building, Oran Park, Camden and Narellan Libraries, Camden Visitor Information Centre and participating local businesses.

Uncover Local History Through Gregory Hills’ Art Installations While Gregory Hills itself may be one of Camden’s newer suburbs at only just over 10 years old, the history and influence surrounding the area is as rich as it is extensive. They believe that providing insights into the history of the area now known as Gregory Hills can give our residents a unique perspective on where we are headed.

With this in mind, last year they began planning and implementing an art installation trail that would be sewn throughout the suburb of Gregory Hills and tell its history. As David Taylor, General Manager of Gregory Hills’ developer Dart West, puts it, it’s about celebrating the area in a creative and visually effective way.

“There is such a rich history within the soil of Gregory Hills and we just felt there should be a way we can unearth it and put it on display for all the residents, and their visitors, to see” explained Taylor.

Currently there are four art pieces around Gregory Hills, with another 11 to be added moving forward. The four that have already been installed are: • Unfurling (La Valla Park); • Mount St Gregory (Howard Park); • Illuminate (between Howard Park and Gregory Hills Town Centre); and • Thomas Donovan (Thomas Donovan Park).

The story behind the art: So, where did the inspiration come from for these pieces? As with every piece of art, there is always a story that acts as the genesis for its creation, the inspiration that drives the creativity. Here are the stories and inspiration behind the art pieces.

The Unfurling ‘Unfurling’ captures and expresses the natural movement of water in the landscape, while representing the reaction of unfolding fauna when water is added and how humanity, especially as a community, is tied to its life-giving properties. Essentially, this piece representing the concept of humanity’s connection to nature and the surrounding waterways. Located in La Valla Park, ‘Unfurling’ is easily accessible via the extensive network of connected pathways and streets.

Mount St. Gregory This sculpture is a direct conversation about the movement of European settlers through, in and around the Scenic Hills since the discovery and naming of the Cowpastures region in 1795. This piece expresses the early interactions within the undulating forms, and the dominant presence of the peaks along the ridgeline. Located at Howard Park, ‘Mount St. Gregory’ captures the rhythm of the hills, as well as the natural barrier of the hillsides that hold a special place in the hearts of the people that live in their shadow.

Illuminate Incorporating the sweeping curve of the existing pedestrian bridge, ‘Illuminate’ is a lighting expression that emulates the experience of crossing a natural creek line. Early European settlers were closely connected to the sources and origins of water within the landscape, establishing their homes, estates and townships based on the close proximity to water and suitable agricultural land.

Thomas Donovan ‘Thomas Donovan’ (located at Thomas Donovan Park) is a piece that recognises the positive influence and contributions of its namesake, Thomas Donovan, in the area. His acts of kindness positively impacted the lives of thousands of students, their families and the broader community. A Shakespearean scholar, academic and philanthropist, Donovan will always be remembered for his contributions that led to the creation of a chapel at Mount St. Gregory and the establishment of the Marist College. Through his financing of the college, bursaries (scholarships) were available for boys from poor families to attend to gain an agricultural education, giving them a viable future in the area.

The Continuation Moving forward Gregory Hills will be releasing another 11 installations in strategic locations throughout Gregory Hills, all telling a story of the history of the area.

New Online System Takes Stress Out of Finding a JP An online Justice of the Peace register has been upgraded to make it easier for people to find a JP when they need one.

“There are over 95,000 JPs covering all corners of the state – yet tracking one down in urgent situations can be challenging” said Attorney General Mark Speakman.

“The revamped register will solve this problem by enabling JPs to include the dates and times they’re available, in addition to their contact details.

“For JPs, it will mean fewer unwanted disruptions, while people who need a document witnessed or certified quickly will no longer have to waste time calling JPs – only to discover they’re on holidays or busy”.

The improved register also assists culturally and linguistically diverse communities, by enabling people to search for a local JP who speaks a particular language.

The new-look register began operating in early 2019.

JPs act as independent and objective witnesses to documents people need for a variety of purposes. Their main functions are to witness affidavits and statutory declarations, and they may also certify copies of original documents. JPs provide their services on a voluntary basis.

Since the commemorative certificates were introduced in 2012, 2979 Justices of the Peace have been recognised for 50 years of service.

What is Probus? Oran Park Probus Club is one of many social clubs in Australia and New Zealand within the Probus South Pacific region. Probus aims to promote fun, fellowship and friendship among retired and semiretired people.

The transition from working to retirement can mean a loss of social connection for some people. Joining a probus club gives you access to new friends who enjoy the same things as you do and may inspire you to try something new.

Oran Park Probus Club meets on the first Tuesday of the month at the NewLife Church, corner of Central Avenue and Marcus Loane Way, Oran Park.

At the meetings this year, we have enjoyed many varied topics from our Guest Speakers. In August we learned about the different varieties and propagation of geraniums and pelargoniums. At our recent meeting we heard some fascinating tales of “Australia’s most unbelievable true stories” and in October we will be entertained by a group of singers.

In one of the latest e-newsletters*** that I subscribe to, the author reflected on the fact that spring shadows are unique. As they said “In summer, we look to the shadows for relief from the intensity of the sun. There is a time during winter when there is a marked difference as we step from the shadow into dull warmth.

But (during Spring) the sun and the shadow seemed to be working together. Sun, shadow, shadow, sun: they felt the same—an image of tranquillity”. As this author goes onto say: “Many of us have shadow times in our lives. In happy times, it is easy to live in the light, joyful and thankful to God for the blessings of our daily life. Oran Park Players Become Heroes With Abilities Participants of Afford's Oran Park Day Program are developing their skills in a new, modified competition of touch football called Heroes With Abilities, where all participants are encouraged to 'have a go', no matter their disability.

Afford (the Australian Foundation for Disability) champions inclusive communities and encourages all members of the Afford community to stay active to lead a happy and healthy lifestyle under the NDIS. Afford has partnered with Heroes With Abilities to launch this new initiative, where players with any disability work as a team to become reigning champions of the Heroes With Abilities Afford Shield on the final Gala Day. The competition involves a modified game of touch football where there are six tackles and the ball is always kept in play.

Teams will also have two able bodied players who are there to mentor and encourage team members, but are not able to score or kick the ball.

For around 10 weeks, players from Afford Oran Park Day Program have trained to develop their skills in ball passing, balance, kicking, playing as a team and of course, having fun!

Afford CEO, Steven Herald says that the partnership aligns strongly with Afford's mission to promote inclusive communities and healthy lifestyles.

"Each and every one of our clients has a unique ability to share. We are proud to be partnering with Heroes with Abilities to ensure that our clients have every opportunity to get involved in activities that they love."

Heroes With Abilities was founded by George Tonna and Marco Quintao.

Living with Cerebral Palsy, George wanted to create opportunities for individuals to feel safe and supported to get involved in sport. 20 years ago, George was integral in establishing Cerebral Palsy football and soccer, and is also currently a founder and life member of the NSW Physical Disability Rugby League Association and plays for the Wests Tigers team.
