Hair, Hearts and Wigs Good people with big hearts are all over Oran Park, living here I often see so many stories of residents helping each other and donating time and resources for those less fortunate but one resident’s story in particular is sure to pull at your heart strings.

Ignacio or “Iggi” as everyone calls him is a happy vibrant 9 year old boy who lives and attends school in Oran Park. Only a year and half ago, Iggi was diagnosed with mild autism. Struggling with various things that other kids may find naturally easy is something that Iggi deals with on a daily basis including loud noises.

Due to this, parents Laura and Cristian struggled to get their son to a hairdresser to cut his hair due to the loud sound of the clippers, until recently. A cut that would normally take a short time, would take Iggi over an hour to finish, hence the reason his hair had grown to reach his shoulders.

After sitting down with their son and discussing options on how to get him to agree to a haircut, the discussion was had regarding the unfortunate situation of some young children battling with cancer who lose their hair due to treatments. It was then decided Iggi would be more than happy to cut his hair if it was going to a sick boy or girl who needed it more than him.

Big hearted Iggi put the wheels in motion and scheduled his hair cut. Generous local business owner, Chantelle from Chantelle’s Mobile Hair and Tanning in Oran Park kindly donated her time and offered her services to do the cut.

Mother Hubbard’s Cupboard is a not-for-profit opportunity shop working with the community for the community. All funds raised from donated goods support community needs, with particular focus on women and children of domestic violence and the homeless. The organisation is run by a devoted team of selfless, dedicated and committed volunteers to achieve what no one person can. They share a passion to help community needs and enjoy working together tirelessly to achieve its charitable purpose toward this end.

To achieve their vision, their strategy is to accept quality used & new items people no longer need; bric-a-brac, household items, clothes, (and shoes, bags, etc): even furniture. Once donated to the opportunity shop in Camden, the goods become inexpensive bargains, and the money raised is distributed to community needs. The donors empty their cupboards while the community finds treasures for their cupboards - everyone wins! “Filling What’s Empty” aptly describes this process.

Worth Following This edition of the Gazette will come out around the time that the US Elections will be decided.

What a ride it’s been. I must confess that I’ve found myself shaking my head on many more than one occasion. Now it clearly isn’t the business of my humble column here to be offering political advice so I thought I’d comment on something behind all elections - leadership.

As Australians it seems that deep in our DNA is a dislike of any sort of hierarchy or structure that seeks to rule over us. We’re a pretty naturally rebellious lot. I’m not sure we can actually blame the convicts (given how multicultural we are) but we’re not fond of anyone who thinks they’re better than anyone else.

Interestingly Jesus (a Palestinian Jew by upbringing) had some pretty radical views on leadership. We learn this from the Bible as we watch Jesus interrupt a rather embarrassing conversation that his followers were having about which of them was the greatest. Here’s Jesus’ devastating response to their one-up-manship: “You know that those who are regarded as rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all.” Even more amazingly Jesus (referring to himself by his favourite title “Son of Man”) goes on to say this, “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

In short, we see here a model of leadership that puts service of others first, that says the path to true greatness is care and sacrifice for others. Jesus models this at its most incredible extreme when he died on the cross for our sins.

I’m not sure who will win the US election but I’m pretty sure this sort of leadership might just win the hearts of regular Australians like you and me. Do you lead? Be worth following - by serving!

Stuart – New life Anglican Church

Oran Park Anglican College is moving ahead. The College recently opened another new building for primary school students, called the Thomas Hassall Learning Centre. The College also held its Grandparents Day and over five hundred guests joined with students in the celebrations.

Thomas Hassall was the first Anglican Minister in the Macarthur area and lived at Denbigh Estate which is still in existence on Northern Road at Cobbitty. He and his wife, Ann Marsden raised eight children and some of the Hassall family descendants attended the opening at the College.

Thomas was known as the galloping parson because of his mode of travel and at one stage was the Minister to twelve churches. He started the first Sunday school in the colony, where children were taught reading, writing, mathematics and the bible. Thomas Hassall was a strong advocate of the connection between education and the Christian faith.

The Anglican Archbishop of Sydney, Dr Glenn Davies opened the building in front of the College staff and students, grandparents, and representatives of government, builders, planners and the key members of the Oran Park Town development.

Oran Park Anglican College is a member of the Anglican Schools Corporation. It has been open since 2012 and next year will enrol nearly 500 students from Preschool to Year 10, growing towards Year 12 in 2019.

The building is made up of more than 12 classrooms: it has a myriad of flexible, collaborative learning spaces which allow for students’ different learning preferences and promote excitement and engagement in their learning. The College’s motto is “of greater worth than gold”.

Support the Australian Steelers at Narellan

11 Men from NSW will battle it out for a place in the Australian Steelers Open Men’s Softball Team for upcoming tours of New Zealand and Canada.

Many of the members in the squad were selected from the successful NSW Open Men’s Softball Team who won the National Championship, The John Reid Shield, the first for the state since 1991.

Local Camden resident Peter Wards, a member of the squad, talks about what it means for the players to be selected.

“Being chosen in the squad is an honour and a goal that we

have been working really hard towards for many years. Being in the squad means that we may have the opportunity to travel to Whitehorse in Canada for the World Championships next year”, he said.

“5 of us competed in the World Championships last year and we placed in 4th. Obviously we’re looking to go a couple better than that result next year and Gold is a realistic aspiration for us”.

The players in the current squad have had very different journeys to finally reach their goal to represent Australia, with many of them having represented through Junior local, Rep and State teams together.

Unfortunately there is limited funding for the sport in Australia, despite the reintroduction for Women’s Softball in the Olympics.

With that the squad members are looking to raise funds to go towards the players levies for the upcoming tournaments.

“Obviously being self-funded we’re always looking for ways to fundraise and the community support behind this is always really strong, something that we are very thankful for.” Mr Wards said.

Amongst all the apps I have on my iPhone is a weather app that tells me not only what the weather should be like here in Oran Park, but what the weather should be like in the other places I have chosen as my ‘favourites’.

These apps are great as they can assist us when we are planning an outdoor event or are trying to decide what will be the best day during the week to do the washing or mow the lawn, but they are also a stark reminder at times at how changeable the weather can be.

The month that has just gone has been a momentous one in terms of weather events both around the world and closer to home, such as what was experienced in South Australia - a state that experienced once in a lifetime storms, with record blackouts and destruction right across the state.

As Sister of St Joseph Jan Barnett rsj reminded us in a reflection found on the sosj.org.au website, the immediate response to these weather events was of “sympathy and compassion, with many joining together to provide support and assistance. Yet, at almost the same time, a number of voices were heard, blaming – not the force of the devastating storms, not the effects of climate change, not the breakdown of the electrical systems, certainly not the coal-powered stations – but the increasing use of renewable energy. This has been a concerning response”.

As Sr Jan went onto say: “For those troubled by the severe urgency of the climate crisis, these storms [and other weather events] are a reminder of the importance of doing all we can to minimise our footprint on the earth, and at the same time, to speak out against the political and economic interests that seek to avoid current realities”.

Whether we look to weather apps or websites (or even the weather notices in our daily newspapers or the weather announcements on the radio) to guide what we do, it is clear that more than ever you and I are called “to work with the environment, not against it”.

Local Club Leads The Charge

This season has been the biggest yet for the Oran Park Chargers Rugby League Football Club, with the club celebrating its third year in grand style. The club has now grown to three junior teams consisting of the Under 6’s, 7’s and 8’s as well as a combined women’s league tag team. The biggest highlight was the grand opening of Jack Brabham Reserve in Oran Park, which is now the new home ground of the Oran Park Chargers.

“This year has been big for the club. Watching the kid’s faces filled with such joy at their new home ground has been great. To have all our local sponsors involved in our end of year Gala day for all children throughout Group 6 in our region was a highlight as well” said Kim O’Grady, Club Secretary.

Next season, the Oran Park Chargers RLFC hope to have further growth in various other age groups as the local community grows. A senior competition will start, which will see the kids being able to follow through the age groups and have them work closely with the junior club, which will also benefit all of

the younger children playing.

“Being a small club from the local community means that all children from within the area get the opportunity to make friendships that will see them through for many years to come.

The club is like a second home for many with great friendships and a great team spirit. The kids would say the best thing is the hulk training shirts that they all love” said Kim. For any potential new players and coaches with the club next season, follow the Oran Park Chargers RLFC Facebook page, where you will find all upcoming enrolment dates and 'come try' days. Enrolments will be held at Narellan Town Centre and Oran Park Town Centre with a come try day for all the family at Jack Brabham Reserve in Oran Park, which will include a free BBQ and activities. Dates will be noted on the Facebook page and website in the coming months. The club is currently taking applications for coaches and anyone wanting to be involved.

WHAT’S COOKING

Santa Hat Brownies Easy • Time 45 min • Serves 16

Ingredients • 1 1/2 cups Coles Brand Cooking Chocolate Dark Buttons • 1 Coles Create & Bake Chocolate Brownie Mix • 3 Eggs • 2 tbsp (40ml) Water • 200 g Butter, melted

• 19 cm Square Cake Tin • 1 pack Coles Create & Bake Vanilla Icing Mix • 125 g Coles Brand Cream Cheese • 40 g Butter, softened • 16 Strawberries, hulled

Method 1. Preheat oven to 180°c (160°c fan forced). Lightly grease & line the base & sides of a 25cm square cake tin.

2. In a large bowl, combine 1 cup of the chocolate buttons, brownie mix, eggs, water & butter. Mix with a large spoon until well combined.

3. Spoon mixture into prepared pan, smooth top. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a skewer inserted into the centre comes out clean.

Allow to cool in the tin for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely. Use a 4cm round cutter to cut 16 rounds.

4. In a small heatproof bowl, add the remaining ½ cup of dark chocolate buttons, & set over a saucepan half-filled with simmering water. Stir with a metal spoon until melted, then drop a little chocolate on the cut-side of each strawberry & place on top of the brownie.

5. To prepare the icing, combine the icing mix, cream cheese & butter. Using an electric mixer, mix on low speed for 30 seconds or until combined, increasing speed to high & mixing for a further 1 to 2 minutes until light & creamy.

6. Transfer icing to a piping bag fitted with a small round nozzle, pipe icing around the base of the strawberries & a small dot on top to create the santa hat trimming & pom poms.

Ingredients • 4 Tbsp. Butter • 1 bag Miniature Marshmallows • 1 tsp. Vanilla • 6 Cups Cocoa Krispies • 24 Pretzel Twists (more to allow for breaking) • Red and Brown M&Ms • White Icing

Method 1. Melt the butter and marshmallows over medium heat.

2. Once melted, stir in vanilla. Remove from heat and add Cocoa Krispies.

3. Stir until well coated with marshmallow mixture.

4. Pour onto wax paper. Shape into 12 triangular-shaped reindeer heads. Allow to cool. Using white icing, add the eyes, nose, and antlers.

New Opportunity Netballers

BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT Due to the introduction of the Premier League Netball competition, the number of courts available at NSW headquarters for Metro League games became limited and the number of teams able to enter the 2016 Metro League competition was reduced from 78 to 60.

The introduction of three new sides into this competition compounded the problem and resulted in 21 teams (which played in 2015) not being able to enter.

One of these teams was Campbelltown’s Team 3, whose members were selected in November 2015. These players had purchased uniforms and had been attending training sessions since that time. Six of the girls were 16 year olds, having played their last season as junior representative players in 2015.

Unhappy with this situation, members of Campbelltown, Baulkham Hills and The Hills District Netball Associations founded the United Districts Netball competition to give these players a game at representative level and to maintain their interest in the sport.

Although the competition was small, it was enjoyed by players and officials alike. A hotly contested grand final saw Campbelltown defeat Baulkham Hills 44-42. Don't Be Afraid To Ask!

The Mark Grundy Oesophageal Cancer Awareness Group Inc (OCAGI) is an Oesophageal Cancer Advocacy group. The group was founded by local resident Polly Grundy in 2012 following the death of her husband Mark who had a short and fierce 12 week battle with the disease.

When Mark was diagnosed in March 2012 with a 9cm tumour in his oesophagus and tumours in both lungs, Polly searched the internet for information about Oesophageal Cancer, but there were very limited resources and nothing based in Australia.

There were no support groups and they both felt extremely isolated as they tried to adjust to the drastic changes that took place in their lives.

In just over 4 years OCAGI has developed the only Australian based Oesophageal Cancer website. They provide the only dedicated support group in Australia and are funding targeted research into Oesophageal Cancer.

Oesophageal Cancer is the fastest growing Cancer in Australia in terms of diagnosis at a rate of approximately 600% growth over the past five years. This is an alarming figure.

The OCAGI slogan is “Don’t be afraid to Ask”. Don’t be afraid to speak to your GP about your concerns and ask to see a specialist gastroenterologist. If Mark and Polly had information about the symptoms of Oesophageal Cancer years before Mark was diagnosed, he may still be alive today.

The key symptoms that people should be aware of are: • Persistent heartburn • Persistent indigestion • Persistent reflux • Persistent cough • Difficulty swallowing OCAGI is a non-profit organisation. With no government funding they rely totally on fundraising and donations from the public and are currently promoting a $5 weekly donation challenge.

Keeping Your Pet Safe During Snake Season Humans are not the only creatures who get out and about more during warmer months. From October to April snakes are far more active, leading to a marked increase in the number of pets being bitten.

Prevention Snake bites can be deadly and treatment expensive. Try to avoid snake bites by: • Walking your dog on a lead, staying on open paths, avoiding bushland, high grass and rocks, and not letting your dog explore holes, rocks and logs • Keeping your yard tidy of junk where snakes may hide and storing firewood away from the house • Cleaning up spilled food or bird seed that attract rodents and inturn snakes • Not letting your pet examine dead snakes as they still have venomous fangs • Constructing a snake-proof fence around your property • Having snakes on your property removed by a professional.

Symptoms Pet owners will often not witness a snake bite and locating a bite mark can be difficult. It is therefore important to be familiar with the symptoms of a bite. Although these vary depending on the type of snake, amount of venom injected and the site of the bite, general symptoms include: • Sudden collapse • Vomiting • Salivation • Lethargy • Hind leg weakness and unsteadiness • Lack of coordination and disorientation • Dilated pupils • Shaking, trembling or twitching

• Blue gums • Loss of bladder and bowel control • Paralysis • Blood in urine.

See a Vet Immediately If you suspect your pet has been bitten by a snake, get the animal to the nearest vet immediately, as death can occur in as little as 30 minutes. Prompt treatment can increase the chance of survival significantly.

Keep your pet as still as possible and do NOT wash the wound or apply a tourniquet.

If you saw the snake, advise the vet of the snake type or describe what it looked like. If you did not see the snake, a blood or urine test will identify the snake type. Once identified, the vet will administer anti-venom. Your pet will then be hospitalized, generally for a minimum of 24 hours, for intensive monitoring and supportive care such as intravenous fluids and pain relief.

Can I Afford To Retire?

Once you reach your preservation age you can access your super, so you have a number of options available to you, for example: • You can stop work and use your super to maintain your lifestyle. • You can work part-time and convert all or part of your super to a ‘pre-retirement pension’. • You can carry on working full-time and continue to accumulate money in super. Once you’re age 60 or over, pension income payments are tax free (for most people). If you are retired and age 60 or over, lump sum withdrawals are also potentially tax free.

Do I Have Enough Super To Stop Work?

The decision to retire permanently largely depends on whether you have the financial resources available to last the rest of your life (which could be over twenty years). Especially since you won’t be able to access the age pension until you’re at least 65. Working out how much super you need to retire on is a

good idea, so we recommend you speak to us about strategies appropriate for you.

Work Part-Time And Access Your Super At The Same Time A pre-retirement pension is an option you can use if you’re still working and you’re over preservation age (55 if born before 1 July 1960 and increasing gradually until it reaches 60 for anyone born on or after 1 July 1964) but under 65.

It allows you to convert your super into a regular income stream, but doesn’t allow you to take lump sum withdrawals until you’re fully retired. You can also continue to contribute (using salary sacrifice) back into your super to maintain or even grow your super balance for when you retire permanently.
