Life Outside the Ring Harrington Park’s Daniel Geale has had an amazing boxing career, which saw him win a gold medal at the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester and later two middleweight world championships as a professional. The local father has now set his sights on a career in fitness and has just started his own business.

“I started Daniel Geale Fitness very recently. I do a few outdoor group sessions a week and incorporate a bit of the sport that I love.

I enjoy talking about boxing and passing on my knowledge. Building others up and giving people the confidence to achieve anything they want badly enough. I love showing people that with all the hard work, you can achieve your goals. Boxing is such a great sport for the young and old, male or female. If you like a bit of a challenge, then you will love it” Daniel told the Oran Park Gazette.

Geale currently doesn’t have any plans in boxing and is enjoying time with his family. He has been doing a lot of coaching and teaching after completing a Certificate 4 in Fitness and continues to study at Tafe, where he is currently doing a High-Performance Strength and Conditioning Course.

After taking up boxing as a 9-year-old living in Tasmania, Daniel’s career included 135 wins out of 165 fights as an amateur and 31 wins out of 36 fights as a professional. He won the IBO World Middleweight Title against Daniel Dawson in 2007 and the IBF World Middleweight Title off Sebastian Sylvester in 2011. New Retailers for our Locals It was only four short years ago that Oran Park Podium opened its doors and created hype and buzz for our locals. No longer having to drive far to get bread and milk and a lazy Sunday walk for a coffee became a loved ritual for most of us.

It is no doubt that since its opening in 2014, the Oran Park Podium has provided not only convenience but also opportunities for local jobs and business dreams to come true.

Over the last month, Oran Park residents have seen the opening of not one but three new retailers in the Podium all offering something special, unique and exciting to their customers.

New Groups for Blokes The community of Gregory Hills have welcomed two new monthly groups for the blokes – Breakfast with the Blokes and Beer with the Blokes.

Breakfast with the Blokes started in August this year. The group currently meets monthly on a Sunday morning from 8:00am till 9:00am at il Sapore in Gregory Hills, whilst Beer with the Blokes meet that same weekend on a Saturday afternoon from 3:00pm till 4:00pm at the Gregory Hills Hotel.

“Breakfast with the Blokes started partly out of my own need to find male friends and out of an appreciation that, with so many new families moving into Gregory Hills and the surrounding community, there would be other men in our community who might be wanting to find friends” explained Brian Schick, Group Organiser.

“My wife Rosalie, who is much more social than me, has been running a coffee connection group for the women in our community for nearly two years and it has proven very successful. When I suggested doing the same thing for the men in our community, she wasn’t sure if guys would be as interested in connecting as the ladies were, but we have been quite surprised about the level of interest within the community. I would like to hope that both of our groups go some way towards helping Gregory Hills to become a safe inclusive community where everyone feels welcome” added Brian.

Essentially, both groups are about giving men the opportunity to meet each other and what better way to do that than over food!

“While there is interest, each group will continue to meet every month as a regular connection point for everyone, particularly new guys. The idea however is that as guys get to know each other, they might organise other activities based on their interests and invite other men from the group to attend” ended Brian.

South West Sydney Wheelchair Rugby League community. These local competitions will be used to provide grassroots and development opportunities for new and existing players and will be the first step in the path to representative wheelchair rugby league.

They are looking for expressions of interest from people within the local Macarthur community to join their committee, assisting them with growing their sport and providing a muchneeded service to south west Sydney. This is a great opportunity for local professionals, community workers, junior and senior rugby league clubs and volunteers to expand their network and be part of a great local, state and national project.

Sporting Facilities Open for Play in Gregory Hills It’s game on in Gregory Hills with the sporting facilities at Cunningham Park about to open for use by residents.

Gregory Hills, the growing residential community in southwest Sydney, NSW, has been designed with an emphasis on green space that promotes outdoor, healthy living.

That design ethos is reflected in the fact that the planned residential estate in the Macarthur region boasts no less than seven parks, many of which are already open and being enjoyed by residents of all ages.

Supporting sport in Gregory Hills One key new park that is set to open in Gregory Hills this Spring is Cunningham Park, located at the north end of the Gregory Hills community. Cunningham Park is a unique addition to Gregory Hills’ collection of parks in that it is the only park that has full-scale sporting facilities. Cunningham Park’s facilities include: • Two full-sized multi-use football or soccer fields.

• Has a full-sized cricket field.

• Two full-sized outdoor basketball courts.

• Four full-sized netball courts.

• Three full-length practice cricket nets with synthetic grass pitches.

• A fully equipped amenities building that can also host functions.

All facilities in Cunningham Park are equipped with floodlights and are expected to be popular with residents both during the day and in the evening.

Camden Hospital Donation by Macarthur Lions Club Last month, Macarthur Lions Club Inc. donated to Camden Hospital’s Palliative Care Unit (as a memorial tribute to Mr. Brian Harloff ), two Niki T34 Syringe Pump Systems which will be used in the management of patient pain due to their ongoing illness.

Mrs. Robyn Harloff, in the company of current Macarthur Lions Club President Keith McLeod and past club President Ted Gillroy, presented the pain management devises on behalf of Macarthur Lions Club Inc. to the palliative care nursing unit’s Manager, Meghan Debono at Camden Hospital.

Megan expressed her sincere gratitude and thanks on behalf of Camden Hospital, staff and patients to Macarthur Lions Club members for their generous gift. A special attraction of this tour was the Griffith Garden Festival.

A similar trip to Orange and the Central Tablelands has been organised for April 2019. This tour was selected to enjoy the autumn colours and the Orange Food Festival. 4604 2400 Preparation 1. Cook gnocchi in a saucepan of boiling salted water for 2 minutes or until gnocchi rise to the top. Drain.

2. Heat oil in a large frying pan over high heat. Cook gnocchi, stirring occasionally for 2 to 3 minutes or until golden brown. Remove from heat. Season with salt and pepper.

Cool 5 minutes.

3. Meanwhile, place beans in a bowl. Cover with boiling water.

Stand 2 minutes. Drain. Combine pesto and lemon juice.

4. Toss gnocchi, beans, kale, prawns, tomato and radish together in a large bowl. Divide among serving bowls.

Drizzle with pesto dressing.

Quick Nutella Mousse 100g dark chocolate, chopped 300ml thickened cream, chilled 1/2 cup (165g) Nutella Crumbled Cadbury Flake chocolate bar, to serve Preparation 1. Place dark chocolate in a heatproof bowl over a saucepan of simmering water (make sure bowl doesn’t touch the water).

Stir with a metal spoon for 3-4 mins or until chocolate just melts. Set aside for 5 mins to cool slightly.

2. Use an electric mixer to whisk the cream in a large bowl until soft peaks form. Add the Nutella and whisk until the mixture is just combined. Add the melted chocolate. Use a large metal spoon to gently marble.

What is BYOD? BYOD stands for Bring Your Own Device. In educational settings, the initiative centres around taking a device, such as a laptop or tablet, to school for learning purposes. This concept has been around for over five years now and has been met with mixed opinions and concerns. Undeniably, however, is the need for new models of learning given the availability of personal mobile devices and other technology in the 21st century. According to the NSW Department of Education (2018), “Schools are in a position to harness students’ connection to their own personal mobile devices for the purpose of developing 21st century learning skills and for fostering digital literacy, fluency and citizenship in a safe environment”.

Apart from primarily endeavouring to integrate technology more extensively in education to promote collaborative, personalised and accessible options for learning, economics plays a huge role in the argument for the Bring Your Own Device program. Technology investments are expensive for schools, especially given the probability of needing to update resources as they become obsolete after a few years. With students bringing their own personal devices, the school can then redirect funding to other areas in technology, including the purchase and maintenance of interactive whiteboards.

BYOD also encourages students to take responsibility for their learning, manage their own tasks and collaborate with others. Every school implementing this initiative should have a BYOD Policy and students made aware of expectations for appropriate online behaviour, including social media use. Most of these policies align directly with school welfare policies of expected behaviour, which in turn also address matters such as cyberbullying.

The biggest concerns surrounding the BYOD Program are the possible distraction that can occur with technology being so readily available to students in the classroom and the possible inequity of students from lower socio-economic backgrounds that cannot afford to purchase the devices in the first place. Most NSW schools have been proactive in addressing these concerns with policies, procedures and alternative arrangements put in place to ensure BYOD is successful for all students. Remembrance Day – Lest We Forget Remembrance Day in Australia will be a day of significance this year. Sunday the 11th of November marks the 100th Anniversary of the Armistice, which ended the First World War in 1918.

In 1997, Governor-General William Deane issued a formal proclamation that would declare the 11th of November to be Remembrance Day. The proclamation urged all Australians to observe one minutes silence at 11:00am on the 11th of November each year. Today, the loss of Australian lives from all wars and conflicts across the world are honoured on Remembrance Day. In other allied countries around the world such as New Zealand, Canada and the United States, the 11th of November is known as Armistice Day. This is a day to remember those who died in the First World War. In Australia, flags are flown at half-mast as a sign of mourning and respect on Remembrance Day. Services across the country are held at war memorials at 11:00am, where the ‘Last Post’ is played by a bugler and one minutes silence is observed.

On Remembrance Day in 1993, Australia commemorated the day by laying to rest an Unknown Soldier in the Hall of Memory at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra. The Unknown Soldier was buried in a coffin made from Tasmanian Blackwood with his bayonet and a spring of wattle by him.

Red poppies are worn on items of clothing on the 11th of November to remember those who died during war. Poppies were amongst the first flowers that came from the battlefields of northern France and Belgium during the First World War. Sprigs of rosemary are also worn on Remembrance Day and ANZAC Day. This year’s statement is titled A Place to Call Home: Making a home for everyone in our land. It confronts the growing challenge of homelessness and housing insecurity in Australia.

The latest Census figures show that more than 116,000 Australians are homeless – something unacceptable for a rich and well-resourced nation like ours. Yet these people are only the tip of the iceberg: welfare agencies report growing numbers of families and individuals struggling to meet the cost of mortgages or rents and turning to specialist housing services, which are often unable to meet demand.

The Scriptural basis of the Statement is Jesus’ parable of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:30–35), about an outsider who does something that rich and influential men refuse to do: he stops to help a man in desperate need, takes him to safety and pays

for his care. The Statement also draws on the example of Pope Francis, who has reached out to men and women on the streets of Rome and reminded us forcefully of the rights of people experiencing homelessness around the world. Safe and secure housing is a human right, asserted both by the Church’s social teaching and by the Declaration of Human Rights.

As we see many houses being built in our local suburbs and neighbourhoods we can convince ourselves that homelessness isn’t an issue for us. However, homelessness is a challenge for all levels of society: for government, for Church and community, and for us as individuals. Each one of us can make a difference and, when we join with others, we can be a real force for change that ensures everyone has a place to call home.

Oran Park Community Carols is Coming Hey Oran Park, Christmas decorations are starting to appear in the shops, there’s the growing sense that the year has just tilted towards the end and that its approach will only speed up from now. So now is a great time to put the Oran Park Community Carols (your local carols) into your diary. It’ll be on Saturday December 15th from 5:30pm at Gardner Reserve opposite our colourful glass tower.

My Church, NewLife Anglican, has been in Oran Park for coming up to 7 years and each year we’ve put on a carols evening for the community. It’s a great night. We’ll put on a bunch of free fun for the kids from faceprinting to jumping castles, a climbing wall, petting zoo for the kids - all for no cost. Oral Papillomas Oral papillomas are small benign tumours that can be found growing on the lips, tongue, gums and the inner wall of the mouth of dogs. They often appear as small fleshy pink masses with an irregular surface that resemble that of a cauliflower, and can grow in clusters or as discrete masses.

They are caused by the canine papilloma virus which is spread from direct contact, or sharing food/drink and toys with infected dogs. In young dogs the immature immune system is not developed enough to be able to effectively get rid of the virus before it can cause papillomas to form. However, as their immune system develops, they will be able to get rid of the virus and as a result, these papillomas will usually resolve.

While diagnosis of these masses are often made based on appearance, location and the age of the dog, confirmation requires a section of the mass to be taken as a biopsy for histopathology. This is particularly important in older dogs as they can also resemble other types of tumours that are more malignant, or the papillomas could have come about due to a weakened immune system due to other ongoing diseases, stress or pregnancy.

Oral papillomas tend to be self-resolving and do not need to be removed. Exceptions include if the oral papilloma grow too big or are in numbers that make eating, drinking and swallowing difficult, or if they get infected. In those cases, surgical excision or cryotherapy (freezing) of the papillomas and treatment of the infection with antibiotics may be necessary.
