The Love of a Mum Flowers, chocolates, cups of tea and breakfast in bed is what most mums get from their children on Mother’s Day. From experience, all those things are lovely, but what matters most is the appreciation and endless love that you get from your little cherubs.

We were recently contacted by the devoted and proud husband of local Oran Park resident Jessica Brough, who shared his story about how his wife deserves the title of “Super Mum”. We knew we had to share her story and the beautiful love that this family have for their precious mum and wife, not just on Mother’s Day but every day.

Jessica, a mum of 2, proudly devotes her time between caring for her family, working, volunteering and being a university student. One of her children, six-year-old son Noah, suffers from medical and learning difficulties. She works in child protection and in her spare time, if any, she volunteers for her son’s soccer team. Jessica donates to many charities around the area and is also currently studying Psychology at University.

When we asked husband Nathan how best to describe Jessica, he said “Jessica is a hands-on crazy craft mum, always making homemade items for the kids to play with and constantly encourages the family to do good deeds for the community. She spends endless time making everyone’s life easier. She really is super mum”.

We were lucky enough to ask this super mum some questions about her most rewarding job in life.

I Spy with my Little Eye Talented Harrington Park flautist Izzie Saliba has a challenge for the young and young at heart; a game of ‘I Spy’.

Izzie plays flute with the Fisher’s Ghost Youth Orchestra (FGYO), an ensemble with over 30 years of history of community service in the Macarthur area. At the tender age of 10, Izzie has to date joined in nearly a dozen public performances with the group.

“My favourite concerts last year were the Harry Potter themed concert and playing at Christmas in Narellan, but the Kids Cushion Concert we did at Campbelltown Arts Centre recently was amazing!” she said. “We presented ‘I Spy … The Orchestra’. The little kids had great fun dancing, clapping and singing along, and the ‘I Spy’ game also challenged the whole audience to work out what instrument we were spying on or listening to. It was great fun”.

First picking up the flute at 7, Izzie quickly progressed through grade levels with her hard work and natural talent. Her teacher recognised her need to be extended and recommended she join FGYO. The orchestra has produced many of Macarthur’s finest musicians, including current members of the Sydney Youth Orchestra and the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra, as well as dozens playing on prestigious stages across the globe.

Izzie’s mum, Genevieve, has seen a huge boost in Izzie’s confidence and motivation since joining FGYO. “FGYO is just the right sort of place for kids that really want to reach their full potential. The music is challenging yet fun, the tutors and conductor are qualified professionals and, best of all for us parents, the concerts are enormously enjoyable to listen to as well” Genevieve said. "I recommend joining FGYO to all young musicians".

Izzie is now challenging the residents of the area to a game of ‘I Spy’ at the Camden Civic Centre on Sunday 20 May 2018. Sights, Sounds and Smells of a Bygone Era Just a short drive away is a special museum in Menangle.

Campbelltown Steam and Machinery Museum is a dedicated group of volunteers who operate a museum that houses a unique collection of vintage steam and internal combustion agricultural and industrial engines. A two-foot gauge industrial railway is also operated on the ground with steam diesel and petrol locomotives.

They aim to educate and entertain the public and promote the restoration and preservation of our unique past. Most of their exhibits are working at their field days, so that they can be experienced with sights, sounds and smells of a bygone era.

Their members come from all walks of life and get together at the museum regularly to help each other with restoration projects. They also take their exhibits “On the Road”, where you may have seen them at The Fishers Ghost Parade or attending all manner of country fairs and exhibits around the country.

Campbelltown Steam and Machinery Museum are always looking for different people to help at the museum or who may wish to get involved with displaying exhibits. They are currently restoring a Ruston diesel locomotive, a NSWGR gantry crane and are completely revamping their boiler house and stationary steam engine exhibit. The boiler house has engines that worked across Sydney at the turn of the century in various locations.

They are also home to the Medieval Archery Society, who visit the site twice a month showing their skills with the English long bow.

this fire inside you, that mummy lion wants to protect them and make it all better, but you can’t and can only just step back and cuddle them. That’s the hardest part”.

When asking Jessica what her most rewarding part of being a mum is, she responded with “There is something incredible and beautiful about children. Being able to play a part in moulding a little human just can’t be put into words’’.

Although we are told, having a mum herself who taught her what not to do as a mother, Jessica has taken her experience and learnt to be strong and overcome hard times. This is in the hope that she can instil resilience and above all love and appreciation in her children.

Whilst all mums should be called super heroes and deserve the title of “Super Mum”, our local resident Jessica has earned this title and I’m sure will inspire other mothers to be the best they can be.

We would like to thank husband Nathan for acknowledging and appreciating his wife and sharing his story.

Selena’s Eye for Detail You could say that local artist Selena Rose Heness was destined to follow in her Mother’s footsteps. The talented graphite artist, whose Mother is also an artist, aspired to be just like her and has been drawing ever since she could hold a pencil.

“I love being an artist. For me, it’s a hobby that takes my mind away from everything but what’s in front of me. I also love the reaction I get from people when they see their artwork for the first time. They seem to just light up” Selena beamed.

Selena’s main subjects when drawing, are people and animals. As she explains, anything with ‘life’ in it is what she loves to draw, especially eyes.

“Eyes are the windows of the souls and one of my favourite things to draw. I especially love high contrast portraits with lots of shadows as I like to see how they turn out”.

Her average A4 drawing doesn’t take as long as you may think to draw.

She sits down for 6-8 hours straight at a time, with a finished artwork taking a day or two to complete. Selena draws from photo reference as it is the best way to make sure that everything looks how it’s meant to.

Ms Heness hopes to grow her business through sharing more of her artwork within the local community. This year she has entered the Camden Art Prize with a piece she is very proud of and would one day like to win.

If you’re inspired to pick up a pencil and draw, Selena has this advice, “For anyone wanting to become better in art, practice is the key.

Practice makes perfect and draw what you see, not what you think is there. That’s the number one thing my Mother always told me about art. Paws in the Park Fun Day for Everyone Dogs and their owners are invited to a fun day out at the annual Paws in the Park event from 9am to 1pm on Sunday 6th 6 May. The free annual event is the largest festival for dogs in the Macarthur region and celebrates pets as part of the community.

“Dogs play an important part in supporting the physical and emotional health of our residents and this day out is a great way to treat them” said Mayor Lara Symkowiak.

“This is an opportunity for people to connect with pet health experts, dog clubs and organisations whilst enjoying a fun, social event for dogs and their families” Cr Symkowiak said.

The event will be held from 9am to 1pm at Bicentennial Equestrian Park in Camden and include a range of pet health care products, community organisations and dog attractions.

People can show off their pet pooch in a competition, pose with them in the photo booth, join a 3km walk and enjoy the range of entertainment on offer.

Competitions will begin at 10am for best trick, scruffiest dog, best dog supporter in footy colours, cutest face and tallest dog.

More than 40 stalls and displays will be available on the day, as well as discounted microchipping, dog registrations, free vet health checks, obedience and agility demonstrations.

The Camden Cats Senior AFL Club are set to have their biggest season yet, highlighted by the local club’s inclusion in the Men’s Premier Division, the highest level of community based Australian Rules Football in New South Wales.

The blue and whites now boast a total of six senior teams consisting of the Men’s Premier Division with three other open men’s teams, one U19’s and one Ladies. The club will have close to 200 registered players by seasons end.

The club, whose home ground is Fairfax Reserve in Harrington Park, are riding high on a successful season last year. This saw the U19’s Premiers, Division 3 Men’s Grand Finalists, Division 1 and 5 Finalists and the Ladies won 6 of their 18 games in their first season.

“This season, we are looking forward to bringing Premier Division AFL back to the Macarthur region here at Camden, watching the growth of the club to six teams now and seeing success across all grades” said Joshua Leys, Club President of Camden Cats Senior AFL Club.

“I just love being involved with people and the local community. I love seeing the smile on people’s faces when they come to the football and the enjoyment we all get on field from the hard work we do off the field” he told the Oran Park Gazette.

The club is always looking for new sponsors and players. 2019 will see the Cats push for a naming rights sponsor for the first time, as well as many other sponsorship packages still on offer for the 2018 season. Recovery Point South Western Sydney PHN in collaboration with One Door Mental Health have worked together to develop Recovery Point – a FREE mobile app, providing mental health information specific to South Western Sydney.

The app is designed for people who are experiencing mental health concerns as well as their friends, family and carers.

Creamy Smoked Salmon Pasta

ingredients 6 tablespoons butter 1/2 onion, finely chopped 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour 2 teaspoons garlic powder 2 cups skim milk 1/2 cup grated Romano cheese 1 cup frozen green peas, thawed and drained 1/2 cup canned mushrooms, drained 10 ounces smoked salmon, chopped 1 (16 ounce) package penne pasta preparation 1. Bring a large pot of lightly salted water to a boil. Add pasta and cook for 8 to 10 minutes or until al dente; drain.

2. Melt butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Saute onion in butter until tender.

3. Stir flour and garlic powder into the butter and onions.

Gradually stir in milk. Heat to just below boiling point, and then gradually stir in cheese until the sauce is smooth.

Stir in peas and mushrooms., and cook over low heat for 4 minutes.

4. Toss in smoked salmon, and cook for 2 more minutes.

Serve over pasta

Lemonade Scones

ingredients 300g (2 cups) self-raising flour, sifted 55g (1/4 cup) CSR Caster Sugar 125ml (1/2 cup) thick cream 125ml (1/2 cup) lemonade 40ml (2 tablespoons) milk Lemon curd, to serve Whipped cream, to serve

preparation 1. Preheat the oven to 220C. Lightly grease a baking tray.

2. Place the flour, sugar and 1/2 teaspoon salt in a large bowl.

Add the cream and lemonade and mix to form a soft dough.

Turn out onto a lightly floured workbench and knead lightly until combined. Press the dough with your hands to a thickness of about 2cm. Use a 6cm round cutter to cut out 8 scones, place on baking tray and brush the tops with some milk. Re-roll scraps to make a few extra scones. Bake for 10-15 minutes until lightly browned. Serve warm with lemon curd and whipped cream.

Be Future Ready!

We’re living in a world of disruption and, make no mistake, we’re about to live in a world unlike any we’ve ever known.

It’s estimated that by 2020, 50% of the workforce will be remote. That 85% of jobs that will exist in 2030 haven’t been invented yet and that 70% of students today are studying for jobs that won’t exist in ten years.

I still hear about social, local, mobile and cloud and how that disrupted business, but really, that’s the price of entry in a five year old conversation. If your business isn’t across those things you need to hurry up.

If you want to be future ready, you need to look at how you can put your client not only at the centre, but as the air you breathe around everything you do. If you want to know how to future-proof yourself over this next decade of disruption, it is about getting firmly centred in compassion, empathy and

delivered value to someone else.

Here’s three tips to help you become future ready: 1. Learn to adapt in response to the human condition. Focus on the changes in customer behaviour that might happen in the future. Listen to your customers and observe their behaviour.

2. Build responsible, authentic and resilient leadership.

Address the changing role of leaders in growth and purposefully shape your leadership for a sustainable future.

3. Stay relevant by adopting a continuous learning culture that will give you the novel insights to help you create and implement the ideas that will future-proof your business and your role within it.

“He is Risen!” (Matt 28:6) As the newly ordained Catholic Bishop from our area, Bishop Brian Mascord, reminds us in his 2018 Easter message: “Everything that matters in Christianity revolves around this central claim. Many people attribute great moral teaching to Jesus - his push towards non-violence, turning the other cheek and treating others as we would want ourselves to be treated. Jesus, in many respects, is unrivalled in his attitude towards the outcast, the forgotten and those on the margins of society.

But there is an elephant in the room. He never claimed to be a great moral teacher. What did he claim? He claimed to be the only Son of God and that He would rise from the dead. So, did He?” As Bishop Brian says “Well, we know something happened

because his cowering followers suddenly found a new bravery.

Many went to their death fearlessly and willingly, not to take lives, but offering theirs for the sake of the One who rose from the dead. For them and for us, Jesus’ resurrection is a moment of redemption. New Service Times For NewLife NewLife Anglican Church stands on a hill in Oran Park overlooking Gardner Reserve on Central Avenue. If you look out the window or up the street you can probably spot our multicoloured glass tower from where you live. Of course, we didn’t always have such a prominent profile. NewLife started over 6 years ago in a living room with my family and another couple.

God has been good to us and the Church has been growing with the suburb. From January 2013 we’ve been holding weekly services, firstly in the Oran Park Anglican College and then in the Oran Park Public School (when it opened) before moving to our permanent home in our brand new building 3 years ago.

Last year we added a 6pm service as an option for those who can’t make the family service in the morning. Coming up

on May the 6th we be making another change to give us room to grow and provide more options for you, our community.

As Term 2 starts we’ll be opening our doors twice on Sunday mornings - 8:45am and 10:30am in place of our existing 10am service. If you’ve been thinking of coming along to check out the Church, you are more than welcome to join us at either of our new morning family services or at night.

Of course we won’t be talking about what time Church is when you come. This term we’ll be examining the life and times of King David, a shepherd, poet, soldier, adulterer and king.

Handsome Carruthers Braves Boxer Ulcers If you know who Jimmy Carruthers is then it should come as no surprise that this handsome boxer is named Carruthers!

Carruthers visited us at Uni Vets Camden a few weeks ago because his eye was looking rather red and quite teary. We stained the eye in order to investigate the possibility of an ulcer, as this breed is prone to indolent ulcers, or ‘non-healing’ ulcers, so much so they are also known as Boxer ulcers.

The mean age of onset is six years old and the right eye is more commonly affected with approximately 50 per cent of sufferers having a recurrence of the problem in the same or opposite eye.

The presence of an ulcer is identified by adding a fluorescent dye and then shining a special light across the eye. The areas that shine green indicate ulceration.

Ulcers occur when the surface of the cornea, or outer layer of the eye, no longer adheres to the underlying tissue. In cases of indolent ulcers the eye can sometimes take months to heal and can even require surgery and treatment by a specialist ophthalmologist.

We prescribed antibiotics and pain relief for Carruthers, and although it took some time, his ulcer is now showing signs of improvement.

If your animal has redness or cloudiness in the eye, a coloured discharge, excessive tearing or is squinting a lot, make sure you book them in for a consultation.

(Oh and for those who don’t know who Jimmy Carruthers is, you probably already guessed he was a boxer, but he was a famous Australian boxer who became world champion in the bantamweight division last century.)

Gregory Hills Drive – Badgally Road Now Fully Completed The Gregory Hills Drive – Badgally Road link is now complete, with all four lanes now fully operational and open to traffic.

The first carriageway opened in October 2017 and has proven to be immensely popular with residents of the Camden and Campbelltown areas, particularly those living at Gregory Hills.

Linking the existing sections of Gregory Hills Drive and Badgally Road, the link is a major improvement to the regional road network in the Macarthur area.

The $45m road has been delivered by Dart West Developments, the developer of Gregory Hills, as part of a Voluntary Planning Agreement with the NSW Government. It complements the substantial ongoing investments in roads in the Macarthur area by both the NSW and Commonwealth Governments, and provides a convenient link to the Hume Motorway and M5 via Eagle Vale Drive and Raby Road, as well as direct access to Campbelltown and its railway station via Badgally Road.

“The new road link is all about making it easier to get around Macarthur,” said David Taylor, General Manager of Dart West Developments. “Since the initial connection was made in late 2017, we’ve noticed a marked reduction in congestion in the road network around the area. Opening all four lanes will only help more.
