Local Family’s Powerful Message Harrington Park’s Josh and Jade Leys have started a local initiative they hope will spread right across the country by painting their letterbox purple to show that their family home is a safe place and that they say no to domestic violence.

“It all came about due to the recent media attention around domestic violence. The kids were asking what it was, and we explained what some people have to go through in the safety of their own homes and from people that are meant to love them” explained Jade Leys.

“We were just at home on a Sunday afternoon recently and came cross some purple paint we had purchased from a gala dinner that the Camden Cats AFL Club had organised on behalf of the Camden/Wollondilly Domestic Violence Committee.

Purple is one of the main colours that represents and identifies the Camden/Wollondilly Domestic Violence Committee. Josh decided to use it to paint the letterbox purple with the kids to show that we, as a family say no to domestic violence, just like the committee’s slogan #sayno2dv” she continued.

The purple letterbox represents a safe place, like what Neighbourhood Watch was when both Josh and Jade were kids. Josh explained to his children that when he was their age and he was out and about in his neighbourhood, if he ever needed help or needed to feel safe, he would look for the Neighbourhood Watch sign on a house.

“That’s what we want the purple on homes to represent. It doesn’t have to be a letterbox like ours, it can be a front door, a fence, a pot plant, anything really. We want the purple to show that there is help there for people if they need it. The interest in such a simple act has been unbelievable, and something we never anticipated happening from having an open and honest conversation as a family” stated Jane to the Oran Park Gazette.

So how can the local community get behind and support the initiative?

“Get in touch and purchase some paint. We have some resources from the Camden/Wollondilly Domestic Violence Committee, so if people do seek out help you have the information to do so. We are the fastest growing area in Sydney, and we need to make a stand against domestic violence in all its forms and #sayno2dv. Let’s paint the town purple!” Jade ended.

Work Commences on Doohan Reserve

Oran Park Town are pleased to announce that work has commenced on Doohan Reserve, located off Skaife Street.

Doohan Reserve is 10.4 hectares and is a significant piece of Oran Park Town’s open space network. It will provide two multipurpose ovals twice the size of the existing Brabham Reserve located adjacent to Oran Park Public School. The multi-purpose ovals can either accommodate four regular sports fields for rugby league and soccer or two ovals for cricket and AFL. Additional facilities will include 8 tennis courts, 2 multi-purpose courts, an all abilities playground and two amenities blocks. Construction is anticipated to take 18 months, dependent on the weather.

In addition, a recreation space has recently been approved by Camden Council. The facility will be located close to the Oran Park town centre and will be delivered by Greenfields Development Company under a Voluntary Planning Agreement. The facility will include a large splash park, junior and youth play areas, a picnic area with BBQ’s, half basketball court, table tennis tables and trampolines. The splash park will be jointly funded by Greenfields Development Company and Camden Council.

With work also having commenced on the Oran Park Skate Park and Youth and Recreation Building, this is shaping up to be a big year for Oran Park Town!

Charging into 2019 The Oran Park Gregory Hills Chargers JRLFC first took the field in 2014 with only one Under 6’s team.

Since then, they now have over 10 mixed teams from the Under 6’s through to the Under 11’s as well as an Under 14’s Girls League Tag team.

Junior Rugby League is a great way for young boys and girls to stay fit and healthy while having fun along the way. It’s all about being a part of a team; encouraging mateship and teamwork, building new friendships, learning new skills and most importantly, having fun!

Not only do they have a fully trained and accredited Sports Trainer at all games, the NRL has also developed the SafePlay Code to ensure they create the best possible on-field environment for their young players.

They are a growing club in a growing community with children who live in Oran Park, Gregory Hills, Gledswood Hills and Catherine Park. At the Chargers, they pride themselves on creating a fun, safe and positive environment where children feel encouraged, included and a valued member of their team.

Police Investigate Man’s Death – Harrington Park Police have commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of a man in a home at Harrington Park last month.

About 7.30am (Sunday 17 February 2019), police have been told the male resident of a home in Westwood Court awoke to the sound of his dogs barking.

The 44-year-old resident went to investigate and challenged a male intruder located in the loungeroom of his home.

Following a physical confrontation, the intruder lost consciousness.

Neighbours were alerted and two members of the public commenced CPR on the unconscious man.

Emergency services were contacted, and Ambulance paramedics attended but were unable to revive him.

Officers from Camden Police Area Command also attended and established a crime scene at the home.

The male resident then assisted police with their inquiries at Narellan Police Station.

Police have urged anyone with information about the incident to come forward.

Local Club Shooting Goals Gregory Hills Netball Club are set to have their best season yet in 2019, with the local club growing in player numbers and fast becoming a threat in the Campbelltown District Netball Association Competition.

The club fielded 5 teams with 45 players last season. Of the 5 teams that took the court, 3 fought hard to make the finals, with 1 team winning a premiership, 1 a runner up and 1 making the semi-finals. This was an amazing feat for a club of this size that only formed in 2015. Their Mixed Lollies players were also fortunate to play at half time at a Giants Netball home game, which was a huge highlight.

“Last season was great for the club. We expect to have 7 teams this year, which is approximately 65 players. The club is growing rapidly, which is exciting” said Deb Turner from the Gregory Hills Netball Club.

They plan to further develop their young umpires, along with their new Net Set Go players who play modified rules netball.

“They are the potential growth of our club, so our focus is on them this year” Deb told the Oran Park Gazette.

The 2019 season, which begins soon, promises to be very exciting for the players, coaches and families coming together for the mighty club.

Alysha, who is also a local school teacher, pointed to the club’s community-centric philosophy as a driver for the award.

“We’ve always said, it’s about the health and wellbeing of our local kids and their families. With our community at the centre of everything we do, we’ve built a club around them. Our coaching and management team work tirelessly to ensure their needs are met”.

Gregory Hills based gymnastics club, Rec Alley, has been awarded the Large Club of the Year 2018 Award at the annual Gymnastics NSW Awards Night. Rec Alley has been recognised for its large membership growth, staff development, gymnastics programming and local community initiatives.

Rec Alley owners and Macarthur locals, Alysha and Joel Anderson, opened the gymnastics club in March 2017 with a goal to provide local kids a great way to keep active and healthy.

Beyond gymnastics, Rec Alley focuses in-club education on antibullying, diversity, inclusivity and wellbeing.

Joel attributed winning the award to the passion and hard work of the club’s coaching and management team.

Come Play ‘Hide and Seek' with the Orchestra Calling all kids who love to have fun. Come along to Camden Civic Centre at 2pm on Sunday 17 March to play a good, old-fashioned game of ‘Hide and Seek!'

Fisher’s Ghost Youth Orchestra (FGYO) is back in town to dazzle the young and young at heart with the brilliant sights and sounds of a full live Orchestra in an intimate setting. The audience are encouraged to bring their favourite blanket or cushion to sit on while the Orchestra plays a specially formulated program designed to delight even the youngest of audience members.

FGYO harpists Sakura Murakami and Mikayla Butler are very excited to be performing. “The little kids get so excited when they see all the instruments, like violins, cellos, trumpets and timpani,” said Sakura. “This is my fourth year playing with FGYO, and these kid’s concerts are the most rewarding thing we do”.

“It wasn’t too long ago that I was in the audience!” said Mikayla, who joined FGYO in 2018. “I’m going to make sure our playing is perfect with lots of our best magical harp sounds to keep the kids entertained and enthralled”.

Maestro David Griffin, FGYO’s home-grown conductor and musical director, has planned a diverse repertoire for this year’s concert, from favourites such as the Sesame Street Song through to classical dances of the middle ages and modern TV and musical theatre hits. Maestro David said, “It’s a great program to listen to, and a fantastic program for our talented local musicians to play. FGYO rehearses each week on Thursday evening at Narellan Library, with beginner through to senior ensembles rehearsing in a non-competitive, non-judgemental environment. We’d love to see more musicians join us!”

Sparks of Joy I’ve only recently ‘discovered’ Marie Kondo the miniature Japanese cleaning fairy of Netflix. If you haven’t met her she’s revolutionising tidying by suggesting that we should throw away our excess by determining if it “sparks joy” for us. Confused? Marie puts it this way, “Discarding is not the point; what matters is keeping those things that bring you joy. If you discard everything until you have nothing left but an empty house, I don’t think you’ll be happy living there. Our goal in tidying should be to create a living environment filled with the things we love.”

It may be liberating to follow the KonMari method and get into straightening things and sparking joy. As I started, I remembered Jesus speaking to his disciples using the image of a person’s life as a house. If we follow His image we can imagine the rooms in the ‘house’ of our lives. Are there junk rooms? Is there stuff in corners growing musty? Are there some rooms that you wouldn’t want to invite the Master of the house into?

Jesus talks to His disciples and tells them that it isn’t enough to simply throw out the old (an ‘unclean spirit’ is what He actually refers to) otherwise you’ll simply have an empty shell. No, what we need to do is ask Him to clean out the house and then come and fill it with His Holy Spirit.

I’m not sure God cares much about your sock drawer or how many books you have, but He is very concerned about what you fill your life with. Jesus says, “I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.” That sparks joy for me. It might be time to invite the Master cleaner in.

Storm Phobias in Dogs Late Summer can be stressful for dogs who are afraid or anxious during thunderstorms. It’s a common problem, and the reason for it isn’t really well known. It may be the loud noise of the thunder, changes in barometric pressure, discomfort in the ears or simply an inherited trait for it.

Storm phobias in dogs are demonstrated by a wide range of behaviours: they might pace, pant or quietly whine; or they could seek attention; alternatively they could try and hide or escape. The behaviour often gets worse with time, eventually becoming full-blown panic attacks that are very dangerous for your dog.

There are some things you can do to help at home. Bring your dog inside, and stay quiet and calm. You may be able to block out the noise of thunder and the flash of lightning by putting your dog in the laundry, with curtains drawn and the lights on, and running a load of washing. Other dogs seem more comfortable hiding in a safe crate in a quiet part of the house. ‘Calming’ pheromones can be helpful (Adaptil is available as a collar or plug-in diffuser). Finally, some dogs benefit from a type of wrap, called a ‘Thundershirt’ to reduce anxiety, stress, and fear.

Vets are very familiar with this problem and can help. There are several medications that can dramatically ease the stress of thunderstorms for affected dogs. Some are just given at the first sign of the storm; other dogs benefit from being on daily treatment for longer periods. If your dog is a regular escapee

during storms, you should consider seeking advice to avoid them being injured or impounded due to their storm phobia.

Meeting with a vet with an interest or specialism in behaviour to talk about desensitization or conditioning programs is another option, and a combination of approaches usually gives the best control of the phobia.
