International Women’s Day Profile:

Debbie Roberts

Women all around the world are standing proud and making a difference with their social, economic, cultural and political achievements. With International Women’s Day celebrated this month, it’s an opportunity for us to look around and acknowledge the achievements of our local women who inspire us every day.

Debbie Roberts, a local volunteer, philanthropist and avid networker, interested in connecting people to support, education and opportunities and most importantly a community advocate for organ donation is one of those special people. Whoever meets her is instantly inspired by not only her life story and experience, but by her genuine drive to help people succeed and offer a positive outlook on any situation, making it her mission to “’inspire people to make a difference in the world”.

Debbie’s interest in working in the community led her to work for two charities, Youth Solutions and Ronald McDonald House Westmead, where she became the Chief Executive Officer of both. She has served on many boards including South Western Sydney Local Health District Board, Campbelltown Chamber of Commerce Board, UWS School of Medicine Year 3-5 Curriculum Committee and the Rotary Club of Narellan Following the death of her 20-year-old daughter, and the donation of her organs, Debbie became an organ donor advocate. She shared her family’s story to promote the awareness of organ donation, showing strength and determination to assist in better living opportunities to those in need.

Her charisma and dedication has led to numerous awards for her community service including a Rotary Paul Harris Fellow Award, Campbelltown City Council International Women’s Day Recognition Certificate, UWS Women of the West - Highly Commended Award, WESTPAC Local Ruby Award and NSW Woman of the Year Nominee Award.

When asking Debbie what she is most proud of accomplishing she said, “Organ donation advocacy and overcoming several personal tragedies to become a stronger, more resilient woman and mentoring as many women as I can to make a real difference to someone’s life”.

Volunteer work both locally and overseas, including Rotary, organ donation advocacy and volunteering on the local boards is something Debbie is very proud of, explaining that “you need to put your hand up to make a difference in your community”.

Debbie is a strong and passionate advocate for the Macarthur community, and continues this through her personal and professional life. When asking Debbie what her advice to women who want to make a difference would be, her answer was simple, ‘’Its ok to make mistakes, but learn by them. Help others along the way - it costs nothing. Support and encourage other women to succeed and be the best version of themselves”.

Harrington United Hornets Ready to Sting!

Harrington United Hornets Football Club was formed in 2002, with only 4 teams.

Since then, the local club has continued to grow bigger and stronger, where they are now the 3rd largest club in the Macarthur region with over 60 teams.

Mental Health Disorders In You ng People Adolescence is a time of great change for young people and is also the period during which many mental health disorders emerge. In fact, half of all mental health disorders show their first signs and symptoms by age 14 and three quarters by age 24. Since young people are often negotiating a range of challenges – physical, social, academic – mental health disorders place young people at greater risk of poor academic achievement, unemployment, poor social functioning and substance abuse. A big concern is the increased risk of self-harming behaviours in young people with mental health disorders.

What Are The Common Mental Health Disorders In You ng People?

Anxiety disorders and depressive disorders are the most common serious mental health disorders in young people with rates higher in young women as compared to young men. They often go together.

While feelings of anxiety and sadness are normal emotions experienced by everyone, when these feelings are long-lasting; become intense and overwhelming; and affect study, work and relationships, these can be signs of anxiety and depressive disorders.

Young people with anxiety often feel anxious, on edge or worried most of the time. They can also feel overwhelmed, frightened or even panicked and can experience physical symptoms such as a racing heart, butterflies in the stomach, muscle tension, shaky hands or nausea. In addition, those with anxiety think a lot more about things that they would normally and tend to cope with their anxiety by avoiding certain places, people or situations.

Young people with depression, often report feeling irritable, sad and stressed most of the time. Other feelings they often talk about include feeling guilty, worthless, frustrated and indecisive.

Young people with anxiety and depression often raise concerns about coping with stress, school and study problems, body image issues, family conflict, bullying and self-harm.

Family and friends are the first notice to that something is amiss. You may notice that the young person is not their usual self; they are more irritable or angry than usual; that they are withdrawn or appear preoccupied and are less communicative; that their grades at school have dropped or that their attendance at school is poor; they often talk of feeling stressed or “not coping.”

In a situation like this, it is best to ask them if they are ok; listen to them and communicate that you are worried about them and that you want to help where you can; and encourage them to get some help.

Through surveys, young people tell us that they are most likely to seek help from family and friends, through community based organisations and help lines, online and sometimes from their teachers at school.

What Sort Of Help Is Available?

Although “talking therapies” are the main way of helping young people with anxiety and depression, medications are available where the symptoms are severe.

Where Do I Go For Help?

A good first point of call is your local doctor who can not only conduct an initial assessment, commence treatment and refer to the appropriate health professional or services as required.

There are a also number of organisations that can help: Beyond Blue; Kids Helpline; Lifeline; headspace and eheadspace; BiteBack; Reach Out; QLife (for LGBTIQ young people) among others.

Outcomes For the vast majority of young people with mental health disorders, with early identification and intervention with the appropriate support and treatment, the outcomes are very good.

12-year-old local resident Noah Douglas has been growing his hair for the past 5 years. His trademark locks have been the envy of all, but that’s all about to come to an end for a great cause. This month, Noah will be taking part in the World’s Greatest Shave, losing his locks and raising valuable funds for the Leukaemia Foundation.

“Many years ago, I told him that if he grew his hair long enough we could cut it and donate it to make wigs for kids with cancer who lose their hair and we could raise money to help sick people. He didn’t really understand all the details at that young age, but the seed was certainly planted” said Julie Douglas, Noah’s Mum. Noah’s hair is so long that he has been continually mistaken for a girl. “It doesn’t upset him. He’s used to it. Most of the time he doesn’t even bother correcting them” added Julie.

His initial goal was to raise $1,500, but he hopes to smash

that out of the ball park. He is already nearly halfway at $740, with most of the donations coming from people who saw him on a video that was posted by Julie to the local community noticeboard on Facebook.

“It is amazing that strangers have been so generous. That video now has more than 5,000 views. It makes me think, if those 5,000 people had each donated just $1, he’d have $5,000 in donations. It’s so important to know that every dollar counts, and Noah appreciates every cent” Julie explained.

Noah is hoping to donate his hair once he has taken part in the World’s Greatest Shave and his family are looking into the different organisations and checking their requirements for length. All he knows is that he’d really like to help kids as he appreciates how very lucky he is to be healthy.

“I am just so proud of Noah taking part in this charity but not just because he’s going to lose the locks that have grown to be his trademark and that he loves. I am proud that he has stood bravely for all these years from dealing with the brushing and doing the morning ponytail to being mistaken for a girl. All for this end result to help others” ended Julie.

Local Networking Where Family Matters, Off to a Great Start!

Local business owners gathered together last month at the Oran Park Smart Work Hub for the launch of CRG Creative Networking. A weekly family friendly business to business networking meeting that will be held every Monday at 10am for local business owners to come together and network, promote their business and build relationships whilst referring and learning from each other for a successful future.

Guest speaker, Camden Mayor Cr Lara Symkowiak addressed the group and presented a detailed report on the growth and opportunity areas and expressed the support and involvement that Camden Council provide to our local business owners.

With family in mind, Renee and Cameron who also run their own business, felt that there was a need for this kind of group to cater for the business owner who works around their family and children. The meeting is family friendly by offering a child minding service whilst the meeting is taking place. The

children are cared for by a qualified carer and are set up with activities and crafts whilst their parents are busy networking.

“It’s a great feeling to know we had eliminated a road block for many parents who struggle to promote their business because of family commitments and allow them to network with other likeminded businesses to come together to achieve the same goals” explained Renee.

All local business owners are welcome to attend and will be exposed to referral opportunities and guest speakers as well as education sessions that may assist with helping them grow their brand in the local community.

Mars Bar Cheesecake

ingredients 250g plain chocolate biscuits 150g butter, melted 2 tablespoons brown sugar 20g butter, extra 300ml thickened cream 50g milk eating chocolate, chopped finely 3 teaspoons gelatine 1/4 cup (60ml) water 2 (250g) packets cream cheese, softened 1/2 cup (110g) caster sugar 3 (53g) Mars Bars, chopped finely preparation 1. Blend or process biscuits until mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs. Add butter process until just combined.

Press biscuit mixture evenly over base and side of 20cm springform tin, place on tray. Refrigerate about 30 minutes or until firm.

2. Meanwhile make butterscotch sauce, combine brown sugar, extra butter and 2 tablespoons of the cream in small saucepan. Stir over low heat, without boiling until sugar dissolves.

3. To make the chocolate sauce, combine chocolate and another 2 tablespoons of the cream in a separate small saucepan, stir over low heat until chocolate melts.

4. Sprinkle gelatine over the 1/4 cup water in small heatproof jug. Stand jug in small saucepan of simmering water, stir until gelatine dissolves. Cool for 5 minutes.

5. Beat cream cheese and caster sugar in a medium bowl with an electric mixer until smooth. In a separate bowl, whip thickened cream by beating with an electric mixer until soft peaks form.

6. Stir gelatine mixture into cream cheese mixture with chopped Mars Bars. Fold in cream.

7. Pour half of the cream cheese mixture into crumb crust.

Drizzle half of the butterscotch and chocolate sauces over cream cheese mixture. Pull a skewer backwards and forwards through mixture (zig-zag) to create marbled effect. Repeat with remaining cream cheese mixture and sauces.

8. Cover cheesecake. Refrigerate for about 3 hours or until set.

Camden Coffee Group Are you looking to meet new people in the Camden local area? Camden Coffee Group are a group of local community minded residents designed to connect people in the local area seeking friendship.

The group meets every second Friday at different locations, where they come together for a general chat, coffee or lunch.

They have become a very close group and have developed many close friendships since forming.

Camden Coffee Group formed in March last year. They currently have 23 members, including couples. “I finished working, whilst most of my friends had not, so I was a bit lonely. This group has filled a huge gap. We also now have a sub group, being a Craft Group that meets once a week” said Group Organiser Sue. Parenting Help: Raising Grateful Teens Parents of young people can learn the art of raising grateful teens at a free presentation to be held in March.

CEO of Enlighten Education and renowned author, Dannielle Miller will share ways to encourage a positive outlook in young people.

“The fast paced, consumer focused, technological culture of today can make it difficult for families to focus on their emotional health,” said Mayor Lara Symkowiak.

“Parents want their children to be happy and are often faced with the challenge of meeting their needs,” Cr Symkowiak said.

Ms Miller will share ideas from her book, Gratitude – A positive new approach to raising thankful young people, to foster thankfulness and develop a greater happiness, stronger social bonds and support networks.

Ms Miller has been named Australian Small Business Champion for Children’s Services and was a finalist for an Australian Human Rights Commission Business Award.

The session will be held at 6pm, Monday 12 March upstairs at Narellan Library and is suitable for adults and young people aged 11-19 years.

The Refuge - Oran Park Baptist Church Celebrates Two Years The Refuge - Oran Park Baptist Church recently celebrated its 2nd Birthday, last month. There was a great feeling of thankfulness as they met for a worship service and then enjoyed some great food over lunch. It was a great day with a wonderful family atmosphere and lots of fun.

The Church started with about 40 people and has since grown to well over 100 who gather together on Sundays and meet in groups during the week. The Church also attracts people from many different nationalities including people from Asia, New Zealand, the Middle East, South America, South Africa, Europe and North America.

Scott, who attends The Refuge said “Past experiences made me sceptical/cynical about a lot of churches and religions, but The Refuge has totally blown those thoughts away. It is a Church of and for family and community, where the love is genuine, the teaching is truly Bible based, and it is my home”.

Laura said “I appreciate the genuine care and concern for others that The Refuge community demonstrates. People want to get to know you, do life with you, and are there for you in times of need. It's the Christian family we've always prayed for”.

And Jennifer said, “The Refuge is where I come to be reminded of God’s love and grace and challenged to share that love and grace with those I meet in everyday life. It’s a gathering of people who desire to serve the community of Oran Park”.

The Refuge has been involved in many community events in and around Oran Park, and with an ongoing commitment to helping bring connection, cohesiveness and blessing to the fast-growing Sydney South West, there is great anticipation in continuing to do this. For many people – both Christian and non-Christian alike – Easter is often associated with the sharing of Easter eggs and Hot Cross buns, and children often associate this time of year with the arrival of the Easter bunny. We might not realise it but all these “symbols of Easter” find their origins in the Easter story proclaimed by Christians.

For example, the Easter egg is a symbol of new life; and when a traditional chocolate Easter egg (not like those fancy ones today that contain trinkets and lollies) is broken open and the owner finds nothing inside the egg, this is a symbol of the tomb that was found empty on that 1st Easter Sunday, because Jesus had risen from the dead. The Hot Cross bun also finds its origin in Christian symbolism; as the cross made of dough is a reminder

of the cross upon which Jesus died.

Once again this Easter, here in the Parish of St Mary MacKillop – one of Australia’s newest Catholic Parishes – we will be having a number of celebrations and events, including Masses (Church services) on Easter Sunday morning at our northern Mass centre of St Mary Mother of God Church, (cc. Ingleburn and Dickson Rds) Leppington at 8am, and at our southern Mass centre in the grounds of the St Justin’s Catholic Primary School (94 Oran Park Dr, Oran Park) at 10am. As our 10am Easter Sunday Mass will be held under the school’s covered outdoor learning area (COLA) we are asked to bring a chair. Jesus Is _________ How would you complete that three word sentence? What word immediately pops into your head? Jesus is irrelevant?

Jesus is loving? Jesus is a good teacher? Jesus is a crutch?

Of course there are a huge variety of possible (and personal) answers to the question. It’s intriguing to consider that if He truly did exist then some of those answers will be more accurate than others. Over the course of this first term of 2018 we’re considering a different answer each week and seeing how they line up with the Jesus as we find Him in the pages of the Bible.

Our approach will be to examine why that answer might be appealing. For instance, saying that Jesus is a fairytale appeals to those who doubt everything they can’t see. It makes the Church into a place of myths with an agenda and perhaps that appeals to the resident cynic in us. After walking in the shoes

of this idea we’ll turn to some reasons why it is that we believe Jesus has a solid grounding in verifiable history.

It’s my hope that this series could provide a good starting point for someone with questions as we wrestle publicly with each answer. To this end if you’re reading this, you should know that we’d love you to darken the door of one of our two services (10am or 6pm). Don’t worry, we’ve had the roof checked - it should keep standing! When you come you’ll find a group of people who look pretty much like you. We’re families with kids, we’re adults, we’re retirees. You won’t be asked for money but you will be given a chance to think.

We believe how you answer the question of who Jesus is matters - and we’d love you to tell us how you’d finish the sentence.

Medial Patellar Luxation Medial Patellar Luxation (MPL) is an extremely common problem in small breed dogs which occurs when the patella (kneecap) dislocates from the groove which normally houses it. In a healthy knee joint, the patella slides up and down a special cartilage groove to ensure smooth movements. With MPL, the kneecap slips out of this groove and most commonly moves towards the inside of the knee joint.

In dogs with MPL, typically you will notice a little skip in the dog’s step, especially when trotting or running. The dog may even run on three legs, holding one hind leg up and then be back on four legs as if nothing has happened. Some dogs may show signs of pain or have difficulty jumping. Approximately 50% of dogs with MPL will have both back knees affected.

Treatment is dependent on the degree of lameness. There is a grading system from 1 to 4, depending on the severity of patella luxation and the frequency of which it occurs. For permanently luxated patellas, surgery is indicated due to excess strain on the surrounding ligaments which may alter mobility of the leg. In lower-grade cases, early surgical intervention may help reduce arthritis developing inside the knee.

Three Ways To Execute Your Plan In 2018 Last month we spoke all about goal setting for 2018 but I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen great plans hit paper then go on to collect dust.

Execution is key and it’s the single biggest differentiator between those who simply ‘survive’ and those who ‘thrive’.

Sticking with the ‘process of three’, here’s three ways to execute your plan and achieve your goals: 1. Focus 2. Clarity 3. Purpose Focus: provides the clarity to make decisions that move you toward your goals. Focus and clarity define your roadmap to achieving your most important goals. A laser-focus provides the answers to your “what” questions, “What do you need to do today to move closer to your goals?”

Clarity: let’s you say ‘no’ to actions that don’t directly support your goals. Decide your three most important actions for the day and commit to getting them done. Close out distractions by deciding to delegate, defer or dump them. Clarity provides the answers to your “how” questions, “How will you go about achieving your goals?”

Purpose: remember your why! Have a big enough purpose and it will drive you beyond belief. Commit to sharing your purpose, it creates a shared vision, a sense of connectedness and a level of engagement that breathes meaning and value into why you do what you do. Purpose answers your “why” question, “Why am

I doing this today?”

When you make the effort to consistently apply a laser-focus and remain clear by learning to say ‘no’ to distractions, you act with purpose to execute your plan and cumulatively achieve your most important goals.

As you develop the grit to stick with it, momentum builds and you create a self-reinforcing cycle of success.
