Gabrielle’s American Dream Harrington Park’s Gabrielle Plain has hit the ground running this year, moving to the United States of America to accept an athletic scholarship to play college softball at the University of Washington in Seattle.

The champion softball pitcher who has played for the Harrington Park Scorpions Club and represented Australia in the Under 19’s team is thrilled with how her season is going in the US. Gabrielle told the Oran Park Gazette, “Life at the University of Washington has been incredible. I've made so many friends that have supported me throughout the year. I've been doing really well in my classes, which has set me up for the rest of my time here, as the Freshman year is the hardest to become settled in. I've played a lot more college softball than I was expecting to play within my first year here. Overall, it has just been absolutely amazing”.

Plain’s highlights this year with the ‘Huskies’ include multiple weekend sweeps against competitive college teams and having a perfect game against Utah, which she describes as “something I could never have done without my team’s backup”. Getting through the Regionals and now Super Regionals have also laid the platform for the road to the College World Series, which she is aiming for.

With the level of softball competition in the US different to that in Australia, Gabrielle’s experience playing in the college system is already improving her game. “In Australia, we have multiple levels of softball that you go through, each leading to the next. The first earth will soon be turned on the site set to become the new Gregory Hills Town Centre. The recently approved development will be home to over 7,500 square metres of retail space providing a local and convenient shopping experience for Gregory Hills residents.

Located on the corner of Gregory Hills Drive and Village Circuit, the centre will be home to a full line Woolworths supermarket, BWS store, a medical centre and over 20 specialty stores. It will also provide shoppers with the convenience of over 450 car spaces.

The specialty retail mix planned for the centre includes food and service-based retailers.

With the development being managed by Dart West Developments, construction commenced in June 2018 and it is anticipated that the new centre will open around Easter in 2019.

Oran Park Probus Club

Pork, Lemon and Ricotta Pasta Bake

Ingredients 350g dried rigatoni pasta 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil 500g pork mince 1 brown onion, sliced 3 garlic cloves, crushed 2 small carrots, finely chopped 2 celery stalks, finely chopped 1 tablespoon finely chopped fresh rosemary leaves 1/2 cup dry white wine 1/4 cup tomato paste 1 chicken stock cube 200g fresh ricotta 2 tablespoons lemon juice, plus wedges to serve 1/3 cup grated parmesan Fresh flat-leaf parsley leaves, to serve Preparation 1. Cook pasta following packet directions. Drain, reserving 1 cup cooking liquid.

2. Preheat oven to 200C/180C fan-forced.

3. Heat oil in a large deep ovenproof frying pan over mediumhigh heat. Add mince. Cook, breaking up mince with the back of a wooden spoon, for 6 minutes or until browned.

Add onion, garlic, carrot, celery and rosemary. Cook, stirring occasionally, for 5 minutes or until onion has softened.

Add wine. Cook for 2 minutes or until reduced by half. Add tomato paste and stock cube. Stir to combine.

4. Stir in pasta cooking liquid. Bring to a simmer. Add pasta, tossing to combine. Remove from heat. Season with salt and pepper.

5. Combine ricotta, lemon juice and half of the parmesan in a bowl. Season with salt and pepper. Dollop ricotta mixture over pasta mixture. Sprinkle with remaining parmesan.

Bake for 20 minutes or until ricotta is golden. Sprinkle pasta with parsley. Serve with lemon wedges. https://www.taste.com.au/recipes/pork-lemon-ricotta-pasta-bake

Afford Establishes Support for Disability Carers in Oran Park

Caring for a loved one with a disability is a selfless role held by millions of Australians across the country. This unpaid care is usually the role of a family member, whose own wellbeing is often pushed aside to ensure the health of their loved one.

Leading disability service provider, the Australian Foundation for Disability (Afford), takes a whole-of-life approach to disability supports and, in partnership with Carers NSW and Together Carers, has established a Carer's Program to support carers in Oran Park.

Research reveals that there are 2.7 million unpaid carers in Australia and around 856,000 are primary carers who provide the most informal assistance to another individual.

More than half of primary carers (55%) provide care for at least 20 hours per week and 56% of primary carers aged 15 to 64 years participate in the workforce.

The demands on carers is great and Afford is committed to providing carers with support networks to enhance their own physical and mental health and the ongoing wellbeing of their loved one with disability.

Steven Herald, Afford CEO, says that caring for carers is a significant piece that completes the puzzle of life happiness for clients.

"At Afford, we recognise that the role of carers is a significant part of the health and happiness of our clients and that's why we are working with Carers NSW and Together Carers to host Carers Events to provide advice and support for carers through the NDIS, as well as providing opportunities for social interaction with people with similar experiences" Mr Herald explained.

"The Afford Carer's Program provides opportunities for carers to ask questions, network with others with similar experiences and simply take some time out for themselves".

Carer's events are created based on participant interest and often take the form of a BBQ, High Tea, evening dinners or lunches for carers, while their loved ones enjoy discos and activities coordinated for by Afford Lifestyle Assistants.

The families of Afford's Oran Park Day Program were recently invited to take part in a Carer's Event which involved dinner at a local Thai restaurant. 33 carers attended the event. New families to the centre were introduced to the support network, new friendships were formed and NDIS developments were discussed.

Afford has also arranged for carers to enjoy a night out at a show or musical to relax and enjoy an evening to socialise and simply enjoy time to themselves.

Most carer events include opportunities for participants to speak with Afford NDIS specialists directly about any questions they may have or for advice on NDIS Plans and funding.

The Colonial History of Oran Park

In the colonial days of early New South Wales, Oran Park was originally made up of two principal land grants, one of 2,000 acres, Harrington Park, granted to William Campbell in 1815 and another to George Molle in 1817, Netherbyes, of 1,600 acres which ran between South Creek and the Northern Road. According to Camden Historian John Wrigley, the name Oran Park appears on the pre-1827 map as part of Harrington Park, Campbell’s grant. Campbell arrived on the brig, Harrington, in 1803 as a master.

The New South Wales State Heritage Register states that the Oran Park portion was sub-divided from the Harrrington Park estate in 1829 and acquired by Henry William Johnston in 1852. The Oran Park estate is representative of the layout of a country manor estate with views afforded to and from the manor over the landscape and to the important access points of the estate. These were representative of the design philosophies of the time.

Oran Park House was located in a picturesque Arcadian pastoral scene by using the best of European farming practices and produced an English-style landscape of a park, pleasure grounds and gardens. The house was located in a ‘sublime landscape’ with the integration of aspect, orientation and design, drawing on influences of Scotsman JC Loudon, Englishman Capability Brown and Sydney nurseryman Thomas Shepherd.  The image clearly shows the hilltop locality of Oran Park House typical of gentry estate houses across the Cowpastures. A New Culture for your Home

Have you ever thought about giving an overseas student the experience of a lifetime?

Are you in the position to open your home to a student who is seeking adventure and excitement?

Would you like to learn more about another country, whilst at the same time sharing the Australian culture to those from around the world?

You now have the opportunity to welcome students from around the world into your home and to share in an exciting journey. World Education Program Australia, a not-for-profit student exchange organisation that started in 2001, have sent thousands of Australian high schoolers overseas to have the exchange experience of a lifetime and in reverse received thousands of overseas high schoolers to Australia to live the life of an Aussie teenager!

While students are in Australia, they live with volunteer host families and attend school full-time. Host families can come from all walks of life. They might be single parent families, same sex couples, and younger couples with no kids or empty nesters.

All are welcome to volunteer for the program.

Students aged 15-18 are fully insured and have their own spending money for their personal expenses. 24/7 support is offered to students and host families and local support is also offered by a coordinator. They are wonderful students, academic high achievers, motivated and all capable English speakers, who are fantastic role models for younger generations. Students come from many different countries, among them Italy, Germany, the USA, France, Belgium, Argentina, Chile, Denmark and Finland.

When speaking with Annie Taylor from World Education Program Australia, she explained; “relationships that form between host families and students are lovely! We hear many stories of host families who go to visit their students once they have returned home and many more stories about students who come back to Australia to spend time with the family that have become their second family”.

In America, they have only one major tournament when you get to the college level, with some pre-games before you get there. You're playing at the top level over the course of many months with multiple games a weekend. The intensity for that amount of time is much higher� she explained.

Gabrielle’s goals this year are to give it her all, both competitively in softball and academically with achieving good grades. She is working hard towards making the Australian Open Women’s team back home for years to come.

This small lump is due to a condition known as 'cherry eye'. Cherry eye is the result of a weak attachment that causes an abnormal shift of the gland (important for tear production) of the third eyelid so that it becomes visible.

Cherry eye can occur in both dogs and cats of any age, however, is most often seen in younger dogs and in certain breeds, for example American/English cocker spaniels, English bulldogs, Beagles, Boston terriers, Basset hounds and Shih Tzus.

Treatment, if the condition is mild and especially if done early, may only involve topical eye medications, and this was happily the case for Ellie.

When topical treatment alone is not enough, a minor surgical procedure is required to return and anchor the gland in its normal position.

A Family Town for a Family Man Damien Turski is best known in the Oran Park community as the Centre Manager for the local shopping centre, the Oran Park Podium. Damien has also been a resident of Oran Park for 3 years now, moving with his wife and young family of four children to the town in the preliminary stages of development.

He recalls the first day he visited Oran Park Town and couldn’t believe how much it had developed in such a brief time. Previously residing in Ambarvale, he remembered the old days of the Oran Park Raceway and was blown away by the town’s make-over. That same day, he went home and told his wife the experience gave him an unmistakable feeling of ‘a place he thought he needed to be’.

Damien fell in love with the dream of what developers were selling and the idea you could live, work and play all in the one place!

Living two minutes from work offered him much more quality family time. The lovely, new town with plenty of landscaped parks and playgrounds connected by safe, wide footpaths perfect for taking the children on bike rides to just about anywhere in the town.

Damien attributes the motivation to make the move, to the vastly expanding new suburb to the fond memories of being a young child growing up in a new suburb himself. The idea that he could afford his children a similar upbringing in a close community with an abundance of safe places to play and grow with their peers was an attractive one at that.

Oran Park is one of the most beautiful places with its gorgeous views of the best that nature has to offer including stunning sunsets over the Blue Mountains and crisp clean country air full of rolling hills. Get Out Of Your Own Way I’ve been fielding a lot of calls lately from local business owners perplexed by changes occurring in the market, or more specifically, a downturn in revenue and profits.

Whilst there can be several factors at play when it comes to a downturn, and I wouldn’t attempt to prescribe before having diagnosed, it’s a common theme that comes through in my conversations when speaking with business owners, that ‘the market’ is to blame; the problem is happening ‘outside’.

If you’re starting to feel the pinch, or experiencing stunted growth, take a look ‘inside’. Sometimes your very own people, systems or processes are getting in the way.

Here’s three questions to ask yourself to help you get out of your own way: 1. Are you fighting for the status quo? Trying to keep everything in its place and running smoothly by maintaining the status quo, is a sure-fire way to stunt growth and innovation. Take a close look at systems,

processes and even mindsets.

How responsive are you? Your business needs to be able to adapt to changing conditions. This means being able to capture the novel insights that will help you create and implement change in response to your market. What are you doing to capture insights and better respond?

3. Are you following the herd? You may be keeping an eye on your competitors and thinking you’re safe because there’s no innovation occurring. It’s easy to fall into the herd mentality. Entire herds die, just as all empires fall.

Disruption occurs from outside the industry – instil a learning culture and survive.

My point is, don’t be afraid to look inside, it’s where the gold is. Imagine if you could shift your own structure and mindset and achieve 3x, 4x or 5x improvement without doing anything else – it’s possible.

Kid’s Celebration Sunday The World Cup is the biggest single sport event in the world and it comes around every four years. It’s a big deal with 210 teams from almost every nation on earth beginning their qualification campaigns and gradually being whittled down to just 32 who will play in the finals. By now you’ve seen favourites fall, classic goals scored, and heartbreaking penalties missed. It will all be coming down to the final on Monday July 16th at 1am when the true champion of the world will be decided. So how should you fill the time until then?

FROM THEWORD EDITOR THE LAST As July sets in, so does the snow over the mountains and it sure does send chills right through you!

I must admit, Winter is my favourite season. You can't beat a homemade soup, by the fire wearing your fluffy socks, cosy and warm.

When I was much younger, I recall being responsible for bringing the chopped wood into the house from the shed. I would often grizzle about this task, I also remember all the splinters and heavy work in doing so.

Somehow, those memories don't dull my love for Winter, in fact they bring a smile to my face of treasured memories of days gone by.

True to the old adage, "The best things in life are free, treasure them!"
