Cohen the Junior Music Maker With most 11 year old boys about to finish year 6, you may see them skateboarding down the street or they may possibly have just taken notice of that pretty girl in class and have no idea about what they want to do with their lives. Cohen Browning, a local Oran Park student, isn’t like most boys his age. He is an exciting, new, up and coming DJ hitting the music scene and we got to talk with the little man who has big dreams of being the best in the industry. It was a no brainer that Cohen would follow in his father's footsteps. A well-known DJ and producer in his own right, who now owns and runs Privileged Soundz, an event and promotions company who have recently teamed up with Oran Park Town Cafe to bring the latest sounds to the cocktail nights. When asked what he loved most about DJing, Cohen's response was "I really love being in front of crowds and performing. It’s a real buzz. I love to see and hear how much the music can be changed from its original when played well on the decks". Over the past 2 years, Cohen has been learning and experimenting and has adapted his own sound, using inspiration from both his father and popular Dutch DJ Martin Garrix. With an ever-growing fan base, it’s no wonder Cohen, who goes by stage name Young Dog New Tricks, has already played at some of the biggest local events including one of his biggest gigs, Bondi Blitz. Meet Thy Neighbour
social media forums. Although expressing it differently, there is still the need for that closeness and interaction of neighbours and residents to come together and communicate about what’s happening in their own back yard. Recently looking into the Oran Park Community Facebook Page, I was surprised to see that there are over 1,700 members who use the page to communicate, advertise, and ask advice from their fellow Oran Park residents. It was amazing to see the generosity and goodness that still exists today. One man in particular, 35 year old Arun Kumar who bought his first home in Oran Park with his wife just last year, confirmed that we still have great neighbours and live in such a friendly neighbourhood. Arun is an active member on the Oran Park Community Facebook Page who regularly comments, advises and quite often generously offers free tickets to sporting events to locals who are interested. When we asked Arun what motivates his generosity to people he doesn't know, he simply replied "living in Oran Park is very peaceful and it's a great community. I like offering people things that are of no interest to me and that will make them happy". The next time you’re checking your mail box or doing the grocery shopping, why not say HI to your fellow neighbour and head on to Facebook and join the Oran Park Community Facebook Page and get communicating. With January this year seeing around 3,500 people calling Oran Park home, it's safe to assume that number has since grown, which means even more friendly faces and new neighbours for Oran Park. As the town grows, it’s important to keep that safe, welcoming feeling flowing. Times of borrowing a cup of sugar from your neighbours have been replaced by communicating on local

Jesus and Watermelon Seeds When I was four or five years old my mum told me that I shouldn’t swallow watermelon seeds. She told me that if I did, then watermelon plants would grow out of my ears. Now, being a very big fan of watermelons, I decided that it would be super convenient to have watermelons ready to eat at any time and so.. I diligently ate all the watermelon seeds I could find. I’m sure you won’t be surprised to learn that no dangly fruit earrings appeared! It does remind me that there are things I believed as a child that I would in no way believe as an adult. That with proper reflection I could note that the possibility of spontaneous plant generation in my audio tract simply isn’t possible - not least of all because there’s no soil there. Rather than being simply an exercise in stating the obvious, I use this story about watermelon seeds to invite people to reconsider Jesus. I often find myself talking with adults who walked away from the Christian faith in late Primary School or their early teen years. My challenge to them, and to you, is to consider revisiting that faith with adult eyes. I run a course at NewLife called Jesus for the Curious. We meet over four weeks and read the account of Jesus’s life written down by a man called Mark and preserved in the Bible. I tell those who come to bring their questions, their scepticism, and their interest to focus on the carpenter from Nazareth. My experience is that those who stop to look as adults find someone other than who they walked away from as kids. You don’t need to come to our Church or have a Church background to join in, it’s totally free of charge, and if you’d like to find out more, the course will be running over four Tuesday nights starting July 25th with details on our website. We might even have some watermelon over a cuppa as we chat. I look forward to meeting you then. Yours in Christ, Stuart.
A promise. You can't keep this until you have given it.

Clintons Toyota Weighs in Against the Strongest Competitors Clintons Toyota recently sponsored the 2017 NSW Strongest Man competition. The competition was hosted by PTC Macarthur and held at Gregory Hills Hotel over the June long-weekend. The NSW Strongest Man competition sees men and women from across the state compete in six fierce events to see who will be named NSW Strongest Man. Group Marketing Manager Steve Wisbey OAM says “Clintons Toyota is proud to be supporting a local niche sport. It was fantastic to see the competitors succeed on the day knowing just how hard they have worked. Each event not only tests physical strength, but also a powerful mind.” “It is great to be involved in local community groups and activities and we hope this sensational competition continues to grow in popularity” remarked Kurt Kordovolos Clintons Toyota Dealer Principal. As a major sponsor, Clintons Toyota provided two vehicles to be used in the Car Deadlift event. For the ladies, it was a Toyota Yaris ZR weighing in at just over one tonne, and for the men a Toyota Camry SX weighing in at an impressive 1.4 tonnes! Each competitor put their strength to the ultimate test when lifting the vehicles. One of the NSW Strongest Man competitors | Image: Chantelle Di

The Parks Keep Coming… The development team at Oran Park Town have been working hard to deliver a range of parks for residents to enjoy. Recently work was completed on Grand Prix Park, located on Peter Brock Drive and to celebrate, an event was held in late May. Residents enjoyed a free BBQ breakfast in the park and a display by the Workers Hubertus Model Boat Club. Singer Park, a neighbourhood park in Austen Circuit, is nearing completion. Shelters have been installed, turf has been laid and playground installation has commenced which means the park is on track to open by July. Construction to Champions Park, which is located on both corners at The Northern Road entrance, is progressing well. Paths and share ways have been poured and furniture and shelters installed. Exercise equipment has been installed to the south basin and work to the boardwalk is nearing completion. Dog owners will be excited to learn that the north basin will include a dog off-leash area. Stay tuned for details of an exciting opening event. The water feature originally planned for the Town Park in the Oran Park Town Centre has been revised to a splash park. Camden Council is supplementing funding to enhance the water park which will provide a greater variety of water play experiences for people of all ages. The development team together with Camden Council are seeking design input from the community. To provide feedback go to www.surveymonkey. com/r/2waterplayparks. Cohen the Junior Music Maker performed in front of over 1,000 people and already takes bookings months in advance with a dream to one day be great enough to be selected on the line up for Ultra Music Festival. When asked what his ultimate dream would be, his answer was simple; "To inspire other young DJ’s with my onstage performances through the music I produce and travel the world doing what I love the most. Play music, don’t be afraid, believe in yourself and just do it”. Apart from taking to the stage, Cohen loves being a normal kid who plays soccer on the weekend and loves living in Oran Park, "I love this area and how friendly everyone is. I’m really looking forward to the new Skate Park opening soon" he said. Keep up to date with Cohen's journey by liking his Facebook Page YDNTOfficial.

WHAT’S COOKING
Fidget Spinner Cookies
Fun these School Holidays
Ingredients 2 ½ Cups all-purpose flour ¾ Cup sugar ¼ Teaspoon table salt 1 Cup unsalted butter, room temperature 2 Teaspoons vanilla extract 2 Tablespoons cream cheese, at room temperature Royal Icing of any colour for decoration Method 1. Preheat oven to heat oven to 350°F/180°C. 2. In a large bowl, add the flour, sugar, salt, and mix together with a wooden spoon, until fully incorporated. 3. Add the softened butter and continue to mix until the mixture looks crumbly and slightly wet, about 1 minute longer. Add vanilla and cream cheese and mix until dough just begins to form large clumps, about 30 seconds. 4. Transfer the dough to the table and knead dough by hand until it becomes a cohesive ball. Wrap in plastic wrap and chill in the refrigerator for 30 minutes. 5. Roll out the dough to ¼-inch thickness. Cut into the desired shape using cookie a cutter or a fidget spinner for the spinning part, and a water bottle cap to cut to make 2 centre circles for each cookie. 6. Take the extra dough and roll out again to ½-inch thickness. With a straw, poke out small pegs that will act as dowels for the fidget spinner cookies. 7. With the same straw poke holes in the fidget spinner cookie centres and move it around in a circle widening the hole to be larger than the diameter of the pegs that were just punched out. 8. Place all the shapes on parchment-lined baking sheet and bake until light golden brown, about 15 minutes, rotating baking sheet halfway through. 9. Cool the cookies completely. Then decorate as you like with your favourite frosting or decorations. 10. Use frosting, caramel, or royal icing as glue to attach a peg to the backside of one of the small circles, place the fidget spinner cookie base over the peg and attach the second circle cookie with more frosting. Let all the frosting dry before attempting to spin. 11. Enjoy! Source: https://www.buzzfeed.com/matthewfjohnson/make-these-fidget-spinnercookies-to-spin-and-eat-your?utm_term=.hd9KmNVL#.aq8nYW6l

A Night With The Stars
Did you know that shooting stars really aren't stars? They are usually just tiny dust particles falling through our atmosphere and they vaporize due to the heat of friction with the atmospheric gases, or that Saturn would float if you would put it in water? Interesting isn’t it! Even if you aren’t a huge astronomy fan and hadn’t read up on the latest space craze, almost every one at one stage or another has looked up at the twinkling stars and wondered what on earth, excuse the pun, could possibly be happening up there in space. There is a way for you to have a closer look without paying millions of dollars for a trip to Mars. Macarthur Astronomical Society (M.A.S) holds public star gazing nights at local venues throughout the year and you’re invited. Everyone is welcome and you don't have to have a telescope, all you need is curiosity. Let M.A.S help you see your universe in a way you thought was never possible. A not for profit organisation, M.A.S. is a very active and friendly club, established in January 1996 with the focus on the Macarthur Astronomy Forum, members private observing night and public outreach. President of M.A.S Tony Law, who was hooked on astronomy after seeing a meteor shower, adds; "You are most welcome to come along to our monthly Macarthur Astronomy Forum and
hear our great guest speakers, or perhaps join us beneath a dark and starry sky when we hold our public nights. There you can take advantage of our member’s wide range of telescopes and their astronomical knowledge and tips". Celebrating Science Week in August, M.A.S are holding a special event open to the public and Mr Law hopes that this will generate more awareness of the club with a hope of doubling their membership over the next 2 years and gain more interest in STEM from students and residents in the local community. Working closely with Camden Council Library Services, it’s never been easier to get the kids and enjoy an evening with the stars. You can even loan a telescope. For more information on upcoming events and how to become a member, go to www.macastro.org.au. A shooting star during the night| Image: www.pexels.com

BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT
Welcome
Mini Mayor
Little Workshops for Little People
The Preschool Room was formally established in 2016 when Cherie Maxwell-Gulli and Cathy Camera saw an opportunity to bring their many years of teaching experience, in both early childhood and primary education, to one of Sydney’s fastest growing areas. They poured all their energy into creating little workshops for little people – weekly classes of 45 minutes to 1 hour – where kids get to enjoy music and movement, art and craft and number and letter activities in a fun environment. Cherie and Cathy believe that what sets them apart from other children’s classes is the fact that they write their own programs from scratch. Cherie says, “As we get to know our students we filter in experiences that we know they will love. We do have set topics that form the foundation of our sessions. For example, for our older children we have just completed units The Human Body and Ferocious Animals that they found fascinating. Additionally, our two-year olds had fun exploring their emerging sense of humour with a Shake your Sillies Out topic.” The Preschool Room is excited to be adding workshops for 1 year olds in the coming term so they will now cater for 1 to 5 year olds. Cathy says, “There has been a big demand for workshops for this younger age group, but we didn’t want to rush the process. We’ve grown our business step by step so we can offer the absolute best service to our children and families.”

New Senior Learning Centre Opens at Oran Park Anglican College
It has been a time of new beginnings at Oran Park Anglican College recently, with the opening of the new, Senior Learning Centre coinciding with the Oran Park Festival and the commencement of construction on the Multi-Purpose Hall. There has been an exciting atmosphere as the College continues to grow as rapidly as the surrounding suburb. Chris Patterson MP, State Member for Camden along with Camden Mayor Lara Symkowiak, Dr Geoff Huard, College Council Chairman and Mrs Naomi Wilkins, College Principal, recently officially opened the Senior Learning Centre. The Centre allows Year 7 to 12 students to interact and learn in a contemporary, flexible learning environment. The colourful and engaging building consists of twelve classrooms catering for wood technology, 3D printing, visual arts, food technology, science, general learning and the Senior School library. It has a deliberate focus on collaboration and the use of technology and flexibility within the learning spaces, which promotes student learning engagement. Teachers were involved in the design process and can see their ideas incorporated into the learning spaces. The College has also turned soil on the Multi-Purpose Hall, which will include an indoor basketball court, classrooms, change rooms and a performing arts stage. The Multi-Purpose Hall will provide a venue for sport and performing arts events. Officials opening the Senior Learning Centre| Image: Katy Carpenter Photography

Caring For Your Senior Cat Health problems can strike any cat at any age however it is particularly important to be vigilant with cats that are eight years or older, as senior cats are prone to particular health issues, including: Overactive Thyroid Glands Located in the neck, the thyroid controls many things including heart rate, mental alertness and calorie consume rates. Many senior cats experience an overactive thyroid with signs including weight loss, anxiety, whirring heart rate, excessive drinking and urination, signs of dehydration such as sunken eyes and baggy skin, and tatty fur. Chronic Kidney Issues A cat’s delicate kidney cells can be damaged by toxins in the environment such as garden lillies and medications but they can also fail with old age. When kidney cells die they are never replaced and once a critical number are lost, the kidneys cannot do their job. Warning signs include excessive drinking and urination, weight loss, loss of appetite, signs of dehydration, and in later stages vomiting and mouth ulcers. Arthritis Legend has it that cats are lazy, but if you find your cat is slower than usual – especially in these cold weather months they may be experiencing age-related joint decline. If your cat is having trouble jumping up to their favourite spot, seems cranky when picked up, or isn’t exploring as much as they used to, they may be feeling sore and stiff.
Dental Disease If puss’s breath is a bit whiffy, or they seem to be having trouble chewing food, it’s probably time for a dental check. Dental disease is both preventable and treatable with good home-care, nutrition and hospital treatments such as cleaning and surgical extractions. Feline Dementia A common sign that a cat’s brain might be changing is when they appear to be lost in familiar environments. This confusion is often accompanied by howling as they become frightened and call for help. Behavioural management can be helpful for these patients, as can medications. All of these common senior cat conditions are manageable with a little help from your vet. Special diets, medications, surgery and supplements can all play a role in helping your favourite feline get the most out of their twilight years.

And with that, we've moved into the second half of the year, just like that! I quite like July. I love any excuse to pop a pair of fluffy socks on, nestled into my favourite lounge with my toes strategically placed in front of the heater. Not only is July the month I celebrate my birthday (although as I age gracefully, its less likely I need to be reminded); I also enjoy all the wonderful hearty winter soups that grace the dinner table during these colder months. July is a busy month for many. For families with school kids at home during the winter holidays, for business owners as they tidy up their end of financial year commitments and reporting; and for the community with many 'winter' social events to keep us entertained in our down time. "Be good to people, for no reason." For now, sit back and warm your toes by the heater, with a warm cuppa in hand and enjoy your Community News.
