New School Jitters With the school year almost ready to start, this time of year is all about school uniforms, stationery orders and lunch box planning. But, before this comes the hard decision of picking the right school for their new kindergarten starter, which is a top priority for many families.

We are fortunate in Oran Park to have access to many schools within the 10-kilometre radius of our town, however this can sometimes be a little overwhelming for the families who are new to the “big school” world.

As a parent myself getting ready to send our son next year, we are faced with the hard decision on where to send our little boy. Those questions that are often asked are now our top priority to consider like, do we go private or public? Should we hold our son back an extra year? Will he be socially ready for that next step? Those questions we are soon realising are about personal preference. All schools will have their pro’s and con’s and as parents we will always be concerned and nervous in letting our babies go, but I’m finding the best advice that has been given to me is research, research, research. Talk to other parents, look up reviews of each school, determine what your beliefs and values are, and which schools offer the curriculum that will support.

We spoke with local parent Kira Burrows who is sending her little boy Jackson (aged 5) off to Kindergarten this year to get an insight into her decision and how she is coping.

Millennial Dad Times have changed when it comes to parenting and often dads are playing more of a hands-on role in the family life which previously was mum’s sole responsibility. There are stay at home dads and dads who take a more involved approach with parenting and involvement in their children’s upbringing. Local father Shaun Gregory believes the big difference in the millennial father is that they are more affectionate to kids, play big active roles in their lives and share the load around the house. “Although I work long hours, I still come home and help my wife with the kids after she has had them all day” the proud dad explains.

With that in mind, Shaun had a passion to launch a clothing brand “Yeah the Dad’s Clothing Co” that was for dads and one that supported them as well.

After realising there wasn’t really a clothing market that represents you being a dad, apart from those awkward novelty tees, Shaun took the plunge and launched his own - so now men can wear a t-shirt to show that they are proud to be a dad Shaun wanted to create a brand that meant something and wanted to give back to our community in a way that would support people for wearing their t-shirts so not only will you look good you will also be supporting men’s health with $5 from every sale being donated.

After their launch just before Christmas, sales are strong and their social media following keeps growing. “After launching, we gained around 2k across social media of people excited about the brand” an excited Shaun said.

Gregory Hills Coffee Connect Gregory Hills Coffee Connect is a local group that was formed to bring women together to form friendships in our community. The group was started in March last year and have 5 members that have come together consistently over the year and approximately 10 who come infrequently due to other commitments. They are that type of group – come if you can!

“I know what it feels like to move to a new place and have lots of people around you but not know many people. It can be very lonely. It is also a group to share information regarding the area” said Gregory Hills Coffee Connect’s Rosalie Schick.

The group mainly meets at Extract Espresso in Gregory Hills, bi-monthly on a Sunday morning from 10am to 11am. Information is shared on the two Gregory Hills Community Facebook sites, ‘Gregory Hills Residents and Community’ and ‘Gregory Hills Community Noticeboard’.

They currently connect for coffee and chatting, however, they hope to grow and do much more. This has included a picnic in the park last year and discussions about going to the cinema.

“I love this area because of the fresh growth. Every week there is something new happening. It is also great to meet people from other areas excited about living in Gregory Hills. We have had a few ladies come to our group to check it out before they move in” beamed Rosalie.

Anxiety is a normal human experience. It is usually an unpleasant experience that in part has its origins in our biological development over time - for instance the flight or fight adrenaline response. Physical anxiety symptoms commonly occur in our heart, lungs, muscles and digestive systems. For instance, nervous public speakers often report a dry mouth, breathlessness, stomach cramps and sweaty palms. Anxiety also affects our thoughts with concentration problems, too much worry and the development of irrational fears.

Unfortunately, these very normal experiences can build up and start to affect our behaviour. We may develop insomnia, or avoid aspects of our lives that cause anxiety, and can commence unhealthy coping strategies such as alcohol or binge eating.

Problem anxiety can last for months or years and may occur quite frequently. It may occur outside of stressful situations. Avoidance of the anxiety-provoking situation may stop you doing things you like doing. You may also worry a lot about things that aren’t likely to cause a problem.

Problem anxiety can become an Anxiety Disorder when there is a significant and negative effect on work, relationships and quality of life.

You should seek help when this happens, or consider seeking help when you are concerned your anxiety may be heading that way.

What Should I Look Out For In My Family If I Suspect Problem Anxiety?

Problem anxiety develops over time and may become part of a person’s regular routine. From your viewpoint you may be better suited to notice problem anxiety in their thoughts and behaviour.

Adult family members may seem irritable and

either avoid or lose friendships. They may start to perform poorly at work and complain about stress and tension. They may drink, smoke or eat more with changes seen in weight and physical appearance. They may complain about insomnia, and the start of low mood and self-esteem problems.

Young family members may show a different picture. They may want to consistently stay home from school and can give a variety of explanations. They may isolate to their room and stay awake late into the night. They may become very sensitive to criticism and or seem regularly distracted at home. They may worry excessively about their peers and start to avoid seeing them.

Unusual compulsive behaviours such as checking switches or counting rituals may develop.

Where Can I Access Help?

Your GP is a good first step. They can screen for the more common disorders and make referrals accordingly. GP’s can start monitoring for the physical illnesses caused or affected by anxiety.

New Year New You A happy New Year often starts with many people committing to New Year resolutions and goals for the year ahead. According to neilsons.com, 37% of people commit to making their New Year’s resolution about health and fitness and losing weight.

Local Oran Park resident, Cristian Alarcon made the decision to start his New Year resolution early by committing to getting healthy by starting his journey last November. Fast forward to today, Cristian is 20 kilograms lighter and has more energy and drive than ever before. We thought we would share Cristian’s story to help inspire and motivate our local community to either start or continue their health goal journey.

A local business owner and father of 4, Cristian often found himself lethargic and unmotivated to get up in the morning.

Often tired and lacking energy to carry out everyday tasks, it became harder for the 38-year-old to function due to poor diet and exercise.

Waking up one morning with the determination to make a change in his life for his family, he decided to join his wife on a lifestyle change and start a health and fitness weight loss coaching program.

Simple changes including morning walks, drinking plenty of water and adjusting his food intake has resulted in amazing results for the Oran Park resident.

Cristian explains that once he started seeing results, he found the motivation to continue his daily routine and not only have his energy levels increased, he feels he is in a good headspace to grow his business, is more confident and is able to be more active with his children.

When asking Cristian for some tips for others losing weight, his response was “monitor your food intake, try to eat smaller portions and make conscious decisions on what your putting in your mouth, and it isn’t necessary to go to a gym, be consistent by walking each morning to get your body started for the day”.

The program that has been successful for Cristian is ‘Weight Loss Coaching Works’, however, not all programs are suited to everyone. The key to your health and fitness is finding what works for you and what makes you motivated to continue and succeed.

When asking Kira what she was most nervous about her reply was “I am a little nervous about how big the school is with him being so young, but hope that he will love school as much as his sister who is also attending”.

Jackson is very excited about wearing his school uniform and Kira says she is excited about Jackson making some friends in the local area and him working out where his strengths are.

Good luck to all our new Kindergarten starters this year and we wish all the parents well in their decisions on school choices.

Oran Park Probus Club The Oran Park Probus Club meets again this month. We welcome visitors and potential new members.

As this is the start of a new year please come along if you would like some friendship, fellowship and fun.

The guest speaker this month will speak about his life as a producer and director in movies and television.

We have regular outings and lunches where you can enjoy the company of other members.

Tips For Goal Setting in 2018 We’re already a month into the new year and for many that carries a mixed bag of emotion about the year ahead. So, I’m going to share some tips on goal setting.

Tip #1: Review What Was Take a moment to review 2017. What worked? What didn’t work? What needs to change?

Tip #2: Less Is More I find when working with business owners that three top-level goals is optimal and avoids overwhelm.

Tip #3: Have Purpose Make your goals specific. I like to use the equation: X to Y by date. (I will increase revenue from $500K in February 2018 to $750K by December 2018).

Once you’ve set your goals for the year, work backwards to break these down into smaller specific goals that each have a direct impact on achieving your top-level goals.

I like to stick with a ‘process of three’. Eg. To achieve your toplevel goals, what three specific goals do you need to achieve each quarter? To achieve your quarterly goals, what three goals do you need to achieve each month? To achieve those, what three goals do you need to achieve weekly? And finally, what three goals do you need to achieve daily? You begin to see how acting on purpose with purpose every day stacks up to achieving your goals for the year.

Tip #4: Write It Down When you’ve worked through the process, write it down and

make it visible. This is key to execution and this is where most people fail. Map it in a calendar and you have your high-level action plan.

Tip#5: Stay Agile We’re living in dynamic times. Your goals are about propelling your business forward, not holding it back. Don’t let them paralyse you. Stay agile, adaptable and flex with flux.

WHAT’S COOKING

Hearty Lamingtons ingredients 3/4 cup (115g) self-raising flour 1/3 cup (50g) cornflour 4 eggs 3/4 cup (155g) caster sugar 1/3 cup (80ml) boiling water 10g butter, melted 1 1/2 cups (325ml) strawberry topping 2 cups (170g) desiccated coconut preparation 1. Preheat oven to 180°C. Grease a square 23cm cake pan. Sift the flour and cornflour together 2-3 times.

2. Use an electric mixer to whisk eggs in a bowl until pale and fluffy. While whisking, gradually add the sugar, 1 tablespoonful at a time, until well combined. Continue whisking until thick and pale and a ribbon trails when the beaters are lifted.

3. Sift combined flours over egg mixture and use a whisk to gently fold until just combined. Combine the boiling water and butter in a jug and pour down the side of the bowl.

Gently fold until just combined. Pour into prepared pan and gently smooth the surface. Bake in preheated oven for 20-25 minutes or until cake springs back when lightly pressed in the centre. Remove from oven and immediately turn out onto a wire rack. Set aside to cool completely.

4. Use a 6cm-diameter heart-shaped pastry cutter and a small, serrated knife to cut heart shapes from the sponge cake.

5. Pour the topping into a shallow bowl and place the coconut on a plate. Dip a sponge heart into the topping and carefully roll to lightly coat. Allow excess to drip off. Place on the coconut and gently roll to evenly coat, lightly pressing to secure. Place on a plate. Continue with remaining sponge hearts. Store in an airtight container for up to 3 days.

Combine the sugar and 1/3 cup (80ml) water in a saucepan over low heat. Cook, stirring, for 1-2 mins or until the sugar dissolves. Remove from heat. Stir in the wine or fruit juice.

2. Divide the peach, nectarine, cherry and mint among ten 1/3-cup (80ml) iceblock moulds. Pour over the sugar mixture. Insert iceblock sticks. Freeze for 4 hours or until set.

The History and the Mystery of Valentine’s Day

Chocolates, greeting cards, red roses, champagne, jewellery, teddy bears holding love hearts that read ‘I Love You’, date nights, marriage proposals, even weddings…it’s Valentine’s Day! The 14th of February is big business for restaurants, florists, jewellers, greeting card companies and of course the beautiful chocolate makers of the world - where would we be without them?

While it’s true that there is a very commercial aspect to this holiday in its modern form, the history behind Valentine’s Day is rather mysterious.

The legend of St. Valentine as a patron saint is complex because the Catholic Church recognises more than one with the name of Valentine or Valentinus. One story speaks of a priest in 3rd century Rome who performed secret weddings during a time when it had been outlawed by Emperor Claudius II, who thought that single men made better soldiers. When this was discovered, it didn’t end well for the priest. Let’s just say, the Emperor did not reward him with a box of chocolates in the

shape of a heart.

Another tale suggests that ‘Valentine’ was put to death for helping Christians to escape from Roman prisons and yet another claim that he was a prisoner himself who fell in love with his jailor’s daughter. He allegedly signed a letter to her ‘From your Valentine’.

By the middle ages, Valentine was one of the most popular saints in England and France and a pagan festival, Lupercalia, developed relating to fertility. It was replaced at the end of the 5th century by Pope Gelasius as a feast day for the Christian church.

The first written Valentines associated with love started appearing after 1400. Exchanging cards and gifts became popular in the 18th century spreading to other countries and eventually developing in to what it is today.

Keeping Your Pet at a Healthy Weight Obesity in your pet can lead to many serious diseases including diabetes, musculoskeletal problems, liver disease, and breathing problems, all of which can compromise their quality and length of life.

Although age and breed can contribute to obesity, we humans are in control of many of the other main causes of obesity in our pets. These include the amount of activity they undertake, and the type and volume of food they consume.

Ways to prevent obesity include: • Feeding your pet smaller amounts of food twice a day, to deter bingeing. • Setting structured feeding times so your pet learns when to expect food. • Choosing foods that are high in fibre, as they provide bulk and a feeling of fullness without added calories. • Choosing high quality, well balanced diets or veterinary weight loss diets, as low quality foods are linked to obesity. • Decreasing the amount of regular food you give your pet if you provide them with a treat. • Ensuring they get plenty of regular exercise. • Distracting a begging dog with attention, for example by grooming or interactive play, as some dogs learn to demand attention by demanding food.

If you have an animal that is hungry all the time, some tips for increasing the length of feeding time, without increasing the amount of food given include: • Using slow feeding bowls.

• Putting an upside down small bowl in a larger bowl so the animal has to manoeuvre around it to get their food. • Putting food in Kongs. • Using treat balls or toys to dispense kibble.

There is no problem with still giving your pet the occasional treat, just make it a healthy one such as: • Raw fruit or vegetables like carrots, broccoli, apples, cucumbers and watermelon. • Dental treats like Greenies which have the added benefit of maintaining dental health.

Gregory Hills Netball Club Ready for a Big Year

Gregory Hills Netball Club formed in 2015 and is affiliated with the Campbelltown District Netball Association. Up until this year, they have managed to field both Junior (4.5-year olds to 14-year olds) and Senior Teams (17 years and older) with a total number of 4 to 5 teams in any one season.

Their Club is now very well established within the Campbelltown Competition and with their new uniforms introduced last year, they are now one very happy family oriented netball club.

When the local Club first kicked off, they wore a very bright orange based netball dress, but managed to change the uniform to their new striking black netball dress which hosts all the Gregory Hills Community Colours. Their old uniforms were sent to Fiji to a school team to wear for their competition. Photos of this were sent back to them in appreciation and can be seen on their Facebook page.

2018 Registration Dates are: Saturday 3rd February 2018 and Saturday 10th February 2018 both at the Campbelltown Netball Complex, Redfern Road, Minto from 10am to 2pm. Interested players can come down, have a chat and register for a season of guaranteed fun and exercise.

This year is the introduction of the Active Kids Program, run in conjunction with the State Government, to get kids off the couch and active outdoors. The program offers registration subsidies for all school aged children registering for many sports.

Fresh Starts We live in Oran Park and to some degree I’m going to assume that all of us like a fresh start. Many of us are here because we seized a chance to build a brand new home - to create something from a block of dirt. Sure it meant that you had to spend days contemplating tiles, and handles, and carpets, and paint colours, but in the end what emerged was something fresh and new. Even if you’re renting here you’ve had a fresh start on some front. Maybe it’s been a new school for the kids, it’s definitely been a new supermarket, new parks, perhaps even a new sports team.

And now we’re at the start of another year again. Remember way back in January when the year was bright and fresh?

There’s still hope! This year is just underway - what could you do differently?

At NewLife where I’m the Lead Pastor we love fresh starts. If you’ve not been to Church for a while then letting the bigger change of a new suburb help you take the step of giving Church a shot again is a great idea. We’re into helping people find a fresh start with God. Through His Son God offers us forgiveness for our past and invites us to write something new into the book of our lives on a brand new unmarked page. We call ourselves “NewLife” for exactly that reason.

All this term we’ll be looking at the author of those fresh starts - Jesus - and asking everyone to consider what word you’d add to complete the sentence, “Jesus is …” We meet at 10am and 6pm under the coloured glass tower and we’d love you to join the conversation. We hope you’ll find it makes a fresh place to start over with God in 2018.

Woman Faces Charge Of Animal Cruelty â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Oran Park A woman has been charged over alleged animal cruelty in Sydneyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s south-west.

About 2.40pm on Saturday 6 January 2018, police will allege a 28-year-old woman left a seven-week-old puppy unattended in a car parked at a shopping centre in Oran Park Drive, Oran Park.

Police from Camden Local Area Command were called to the scene and it will be alleged in court that the puppy was in distress.

It was provided water and placed inside an air-conditioned police vehicle.

About 3.15pm, the woman returned to the vehicle and was spoken to by officers.

Following inquiries, the woman, from Oran Park, was issued a court attendance notice for being in charge of an animal failing to exercise care at 6pm, Monday 8 January 2018.

She is due to appear before Picton Local Court on Tuesday 27 February 2018.

Police will continue to liaise with the RSPCA NSW over the welfare of the dog.
