Christmas Without the Stress Christmas cheer and all the fear… wait fear?

Yes, you heard correctly. Although it’s a happy time for some, it can be a very expensive time for families. Particularly, those with multiple children that need to be surprised and rewarded on Christmas day. The word fear is often used around this time. Fear of not being able to afford the present you know little Johnny wants, or the fear you’re not going to have enough food to feed the army of people who are due for lunch.

My fear as a Mum of two boys, is the fear of not wanting to spoil my children and that it’s nice to receive gifts, but it’s also nice to give and appreciate what you already have.

Over the years, I have seen my boys get so excited on Christmas day, only to rip the paper, throw it over their shoulder, push the present aside and go on to the next one with the final present creating an emotional tantrum because they wanted more.

Gregory Hills Town Centre Gregory Hills has enjoyed many milestones over their 10year history, yet few are as exciting for their residents as those regarding the Gregory Hills Town Centre. In what may be the most noticeable development for the project since the start of the initial earthworks, construction of the future town centre recently went vertical.

Construction is now well underway on the 7,500m2 retail and hospitality precinct, which will be home to a Woolworth’s, BWS, a large medical centre and over 20 specialty stores.

Oran Park Town Library Wins Award The new 21st century library and community resource centre at Oran Park Town has received the prestigious Western Sydney Leadership Dialogue Outstanding Community Project of 2018.

The award was presented to project partners Landcom, Greenfields Development Company and Camden Council last month at the Western Sydney Leadership Dialogue Greater Western Sydney Project of the Year Awards at the Boomtown!

Harrington Park Play Space Opens Harrington Park Lake Reserve Youth Play Space was officially opened last month with a family fun event celebration.

The $1.14 million recreational development includes play equipment, specialised areas for skateboarding, bike riding or roller blading, as well as a Ninja Warrior style apparatus.

The event was the first chance for children and young people to try the new facilities and to enjoy a range of activities on offer.

Mayor Peter Sidgreaves said the opening celebration marked an important milestone for Council.

“This new youth play space was the first of our major parks projects to open in 2018, followed by Sedgewick Reserve Youth Space and Curry Reserve Water Play Park” Cr Sidgreaves said.

“We are extremely proud of this facility and look forward to seeing families and children visit the space for the first time” he said.

“It was a great day out and I encourage all residents to come along and enjoy some outdoor time with their families”.

“By providing new and interactive recreational spaces, Council aims to set a strong foundation that will accommodate for growth and our future communities” he said.

The opening event which took place on Saturday 3 November included face painting, garden games, jumping castles, parasol painting and live music.

Department stores have come a long way it terms of toys, clothing, arts/crafts and sporting items at affordable prices starting from just $1. 3.

Buy an experience, rather than an item. The memories will last a lifetime. This could include an annual pass which can be used multiple times throughout the year. Like a gift that keeps giving.

4. Take your kids shopping to buy presents for the other family members and let them pick. Involvement will get them excited about giving on the day. 5. Clean out the old to make room for the new. Donating old items to those less fortunate will teach compassion and awareness of their situation. 6. Instead of going to a fancy restaurant or spending hundreds on a lunch, grab the family, pack a picnic and head to the beach or a park. Fun times for the kids, relaxing for the parents and a little less hectic all round.

Getting Ready for Kindergarten Starting Kindergarten is an exciting milestone in every child’s life. As parents, it is normal to feel a little apprehensive about what challenges lie ahead. You might be unsure of routines and how your child might adjust. Is my child ready? What happens if my child has trouble making friends? How can I help support my child’s learning at home? Will my child manage being away from me for an entire day? All these concerns are normal and valid when going through this experience for the first time. It is important to remember that no matter what, your child will feel safe, secure and supported if the home-school partnership is strong and if they are given the chance to adequately prepare for the transition to school.

All schools have a transition or orientation programs to introduce your child (and yourself ) to school life. These programs vary from school to school and as each family is different, the program may or may not address all the concerns you may have. To put your mind at ease, we have put together a list of activities you can do in the months leading up to starting school to equip your child with the basics of going to ‘big’ school.

1. Trace name, shapes and letters of the alphabet.

2. Sit and listen to a picture book, answering oral questions about the story.

3. Use scissors to cut straight, wavy and zigzag lines.

4. Colour in pictures and draw.

5. Practice opening packets and containers for lunch and eating from a lunchbox.

6. Learn bathroom skills like locking and unlocking cubicle doors and washing and drying hands.

7. Have some playdates with other children starting Kindergarten (at the same school if possible).

Gazette Cadet – Georgia’s Journey There’s nothing quite as exciting as having the opportunity to learn about something you are passionate about. I was recently given the opportunity to carry out my year 10 work experience at the District Gazette. I can still remember the moment I found out I would be doing work experience there. It was followed by an obnoxiously loud squeal of utter excitement that my parents swore the whole street would have heard!

Being a passionate writer who has wanted to publish a book since the age of 8, I found that learning about the media and journalism in our local community to be inspiring and very interesting. As a teenager, I have always relied on my writing to voice many things I am unable to speak. Writing has always held significance in my life, as it felt like an escape.

What an amazing week it was. I was welcomed by a warm and friendly team, all of whom shared a laugh (and a sigh) as we worked tirelessly towards the December deadlines. As we worked together towards the last paper of the year, I was given exciting tasks like assisting with social media updates, artwork designing and of course writing stories (including this one!) Learning about how the District Gazette runs and the busy nature of the paper at deadline time was a thrilling experience.

It has been an eye opening and life changing experience that I will cherish. The District Gazette has been the ideal place of work experience for me and I would recommend this to any student wishing to pursue a career in the media or even for those who love writing. Preparation 1. Preheat oven to 180C or 160C fan-forced. Cut out 6 squares of non-stick baking paper each about 22cm square. Stand 6 empty, clean cans on a baking tray and place a waffle cone, pointy end down in each. Place baking paper square onto each cone and gently push in until the paper lines the cone; staple in place to hold shape. Trim off excess paper at the top. Line 6 holes of a medium-sized muffin pan with paper cases.

2. Make up cake mixture with butter, eggs and water according to packet directions. Carefully spoon half the mixture into the paper-lined cones (the weight of the batter will hold the paper down and seal the pointed end).

Try to stand the cones as upright as possible though they will lean slightly. Bake for 35 mins until cakes are firm when gently touched.

3. Remove cones from tins and lay on a wire rack to cool for 5 mins. Carefully break cones to release cakes. Peel away paper, cool completely. Meanwhile bake remaining batter in prepared muffin tins for 20 mins or until they spring back to a gentle touch. Cool completely.

4. To assemble, cut the rounded ends from the cone-shaped cakes so that they sit flat. Cut off and discard the domed tops of the cupcakes so they have a flat surface. Working on one at a time use a small teaspoon to drizzle melted chocolate onto the point of the cone-shaped cakes, letting it run down the sides. Before the chocolate sets, sprinkle with rainbow choc chips (or chosen decoration).

5. Spread a cupcake with chocolate and place cone-shaped cake on top. Sprinkle rainbow choc chips around the edge.

Repeat with remaining cakes, chocolate and rainbow choc chips. Leave to set.

Renee, a wife, mum and local business owner is passionate about building better connections. After attending many networking events over the years with husband Cameron and promoting their own business, it became apparent that there was a gap in the market when it came to offer a more holistic approach to networking. Where most meetings focus on the referral and the “what I can do for you” approach, Renee’s approach was more focused around building connections, trust and rapport. Knowing that when the right approach is taken, the magic happens, and referrals result through authentic, honest relationship building.

After months of planning, research and talking to many business owners, CRG Creative Networking was launched in February 2018.

Renee wanted to create an honest, comfortable and safe space for all business owners to come and meet like minded business people. A place where there was no expectations and you were free to be yourself and to help create a motivating and inspiring environment.

Their meetings comprise of special guest speakers, educational workshops, business presentations, connecting and getting to know each other and brainstorming troubles or roadblocks in business.

They also cater to those families with children by offering an inhouse child minding service while you network.

Macarthur Lions Club Inc. (MLC) manages and presents to the Macarthur region events to surprise and delight the citizens within the Camden Council local government area.

Each year at Christmas, Macarthur Lions Club are invited to manage a mobile BBQ stall at the beautiful Camden Macarthur Park, in readiness for the St John’s Church evening Christmas Carols.

This year, the Christmas Carols in the Park will be held on Saturday 15th December 2018, from 5.00pm.

Then, as the sun sets and the music starts with all the children settling, Macarthur Lions Club will provide a hot BBQ sandwich and beverage at a nominal price. All this helps create a truly festive atmosphere, while singing along with the St John’s Church “Carol Singers” and live music to accompany all the wellknown Christmas Carols.

Of course, there will be the opportunity to purchase the unforgettable Lions Club Christmas Cakes on the night.

With the lights in the Jacarandas trees on Argyle Street, the festive environment emanating from the Carol singing and the goodwill the Carols carry through the Camden night and a sausage sizzle, the evening is sure to be a relaxing and memorable moment for all. Adults and children alike, young or not so young can make memories.

Macarthur Lions Club will be stationed at the Carols all evening under the lights until late, so don’t miss out.

Summer Time Safety Summer is a time of year when we need to pay extra special attention to the health and welfare of our pets. • Snakes – snakes are far more active during warmer months. To help prevent your pet being bitten, walk your dog on a lead; stay on open paths; avoid bushland, high grass and rocks; don’t let your dog explore holes, rocks and logs; keep your yard tidy of junk where snakes may hide; and clean up spilled food or bird seed that may attract rodents and in turn snakes • Ticks - paralysis ticks are a life-threatening parasite.

Although not found in the Camden area, they are prevalent in bushy, long grassed and sea-side areas, putting dogs that take trips to the coast at the highest risk. If you do visit a tick prone location, use a preventative medication (such as simparica, nexgard or bravecto) and make sure to check your animal by running your fingers slowly through your pet’s fur down to the skin level and feel for any bumps. Rash tops and sunscreen for dogs are available plus you can also use human sunscreen.

Ideally keep them out of the sun between 11am and 3pm • Heat stress – leave two lots of water out for your pet on a hot day in case they knock one over and ensure they have ready access to a cool, shady area. Never leave your dog in a locked car. Temperatures inside cars on a hot

day can quickly soar to a deadly 60 degrees in a matter of minutes. Dark coloured, flat faced dogs and those that are overweight are at high risk. DO NOT exercise them in the heat of the day. • Christmas foods – some of the foods we typically eat at Christmas can be harmful and even deadly for our pets. These include chocolate, onions and garlic used in stuffings, xylitol (found in sugar-free candy, gums, mints), grapes and macadamia nuts. Make sure these are not left lying around. • Fireworks – many dogs suffer from anxiety when they hear fireworks. Some tactics to help your dog deal with fireworks include putting their bedding in a quiet, calm place and putting music on to mask the noise; getting them a thundershirt which can help some dogs feel more secure; or talking to your vet about short acting medication to reduce their fear.

Oran Park Probus Club We had a very interesting speaker from Barnes Driving School at our November meeting. Russell Oats spoke about driving as an older driver and gave us tips on safe driving and keeping our licence.

Our December meeting is the last one for 2018. We have the Sweet Tonic Singers serenading us with Christmas music on 4 December and our Christmas lunch on 7 December. We meet again in February 2019.

If you are interested in finding out more about our club come along as a visitor to see how we operate. For some, Christmas this year will be filled with emotions of grief and sorrow; whereas for others this day is the start of a hope filled future as they witness children and grandchildren celebrating their 1st Christmas.

For some, Christmas 2018 is another year to continue the traditions that have been passed on for generations. Whereas for others, like the parish community of St Mary MacKillop Oran Park (that I am blessed to serve as Parish Priest) this Christmas is a time to continue traditions only started in recent years as we gather for worship and prayer to celebrate Christmas 2018.

Though no matter what Christmas 2018 means to us, and no

POLICE MEDIA

P-plater Detected More Than 45km/h Over While Using Mobile Phone A P-plate driver has been detected travelling at more than 45km/h over the speed limit while allegedly watching YouTube on his mobile phone in Catherine Field last month.

About 10.40pm (Wednesday 7 November 2018), Highway Patrol officers detected a Mitsubishi Lancer heading south on Camden Valley Way at an alleged speed of 142km/h in an 80km/h zone.

The vehicle was stopped and the 18-year-old man, from Spring Farm, was spoken to by police and produced a P1 licence.

While speaking with the driver, officers noticed his mobile phone in the centre console playing YouTube videos.

The man’s licence was confiscated and suspended on the spot for six months. He received an infringement for exceeding the speed limit by more than 45km/h ($2435 and six demerit points) and using a mobile phone when not permitted ($337 and five demerit points).

The registration plates on his vehicle were removed and have been handed back to the RMS for three months.
