Western Sydney Airport Preliminary Flight Paths Released

The preliminary flight paths for Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport (WSI) have been made public. For additional transparency, the preliminary flight paths, along with estimated aircraft noise impacts, are now available to communities through an online interactive Aircraft Overflight Noise Tool.

This tool will let people search an address or location and get a clear picture of impact of the preliminary flight paths including the expected altitude at that location, daily aircraft numbers and the predicted aircraft noise.

Supporting material has also been released to explain the approaches to the preliminary flight paths design and noise modelling.

They will hold community information and feedback sessions as well as community information stalls across Western Sydney and the Blue Mountains over the coming months. Communities will be able to find out more information and speak with the flight path design team at these events.

These preliminary flight paths have been developed by an Expert Steering Group led by The Hon Catherine King MP Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government’s department and including AirServices Australia, the Civil Aviation Safety Authority, Department of Defence, and airport operator WSA Co.

Importantly, the preliminary flight paths were developed according to Airspace Design Principles that reflect community feedback from the ‘proof-of-concept’ flight paths released in 2015. These principles include minimising flights over residential areas and reducing the impact on the community of aircraft operations at night.

Later this year, they will release a draft Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) that examines the noise, social and environmental impacts of the preliminary flight paths and includes a draft noise insulation and property acquisition policy.

The Albanese Government is committed to balancing the needs of the community, environment, industry, and users of the broader Greater Sydney airspace, while maintaining safety as a priority, in the design of WSI’s flight paths.

That is why the community will be able to provide feedback on the draft EIS during a formal public exhibition period following its release. This feedback will be considered as they finalise the flight path design ahead of the new airport starting operations by late 2026.

They encourage people to visit their Online Community Portal at wsiflightpaths.gov.au to use the Aircraft Overflight Noise Tool, read the supporting material, and get details of the community information and feedback sessions.

Doggie Dates are Here

Did you know that there are regular doggie dates events in Oran Park and Harrington Park?

Doggie dates are a supportive, encouraging, and welcoming of all people and dogs social group lead by a team of volunteers. The walks provide a great opportunity to socialise your dogs and meet other friendly, like-minded people, share ideas, and get some exercise for you and your buddy.

The Oran Park walk is fortnightly on Sundays at 4:00pm during Winter and 5:00pm in Summer. They meet on the corner of Mawer Street and South Circuit. Whilst the Harrington Park walk is weekly on Tuesdays at 4:30pm during Winter and 6:00pm in Summer. The group meets in the grassed area in front of the carpark of Waterfront Way, opposite Bunnings.

“A doggie dates meet up is noisy, fun, accepting and friendly. Sometimes new participants can feel very anxious, but generally are hooked after one walk. All dogs are welcome, including reactive dogs and there is no judgement” said Tere Melrose of Doggie Dates NSW.

Groups, like this, are an important way of helping to connect the local community.

“Post COVID, it is giving participants a sense of connection and inclusivity. Friendships go well beyond the walks and develop into lifelong connections. Additionally, the benefits for the dogs are that they learn to walk nicely in a pack and meet other dogs and their owners. Dogs really look forward to the walks. The walks have a positive mental health impact, with a combination of exercise and dogs” she stated.

Children are welcome, as are all different ages of dogs and their people. People without dogs are also welcome. The walks vary in ability and the information can be found on their Facebook group, Campbelltown Camden Doggie Dates. Additionally, anyone interested can email admin@ doggiedatesnsw.com.au.

The Honours Keep Rolling in for Dawson-Damer Park

Crafting Unforgettable Experiences at

the New Oran Park Hotel

Momento Hospitality, one of Australia's leading hospitality groups, is working tirelessly to build the highly anticipated Oran Park Hotel. With over 40 years of expertise in creating exceptional venues, Momento Hospitality is a family-owned business dedicated to bringing communities together through unforgettable experiences.

Momento’s success is the result of a strong dedication to the offering and service they provide to their locals. As a testament to this, Momento’s Duke of Dural pub was recently crowned the best pub in all of NSW by the prestigious Australian Hotels Association!

Dawson-Damer Park, the award-winning and highly acclaimed inclusive water play space and community facility in Oran Park, has added another feather to its cap.

The facility recently earned the NSW Award of Excellence in the play spaces category of the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects Awards. The Award was the highest of its category, with Dawson-Damer Park judged to be the most significant nomination for the advancement of landscape architecture.

Dawson-Damer Park, which was delivered by Greenfields Development Company and JMD Design in partnership with Camden Council, was opened in December 2020 and has been pleasing locals and visitors since.

It features a number of water and non-water activities, including water slides, water spinners, a ninja warrior course, swings, trampolines, basketball facilities, picnic areas and more. Being an inclusive facility, it also has a number of wet wheelchairs available.

Other recent accolades for Dawson-Damer Park include its Urban Development Institute of Australia Award for Excellence in Social and Community Infrastructure – Open Space and an honourable mention in the Department of Infrastructure’s Cohesive Communities Award.

Mayor of Camden, Cr Ashleigh Cagney, said the award was just one of many acknowledgements the facility has received.

“The recognition just keeps on coming for Dawson-Damer Park. It’s a fantastic space for people of all physical abilities and is very deserving of the praise it receives,” she said.

“I’m proud that we have the largest water play space in the Macarthur region right here in Camden for locals and visitors to our LGA to enjoy,” she said.

Greenfields Development Company General Manager Mick Owens congratulated all parties involved in the development of the facility.

“Dawson-Damer Park is a testament to the collaborative work between Greenfields, Camden Council and JMD Design and it’s just one of many great open spaces in the growing suburb of Oran Park,” he said.

“We are very proud to have received this award from the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects in recognition of the park’s outstanding design.”

JMD Design Director James Delaney echoed Mr Owens’ praises on the facility.

“The success of Dawson-Damer Park is a direct result of close collaboration between the client, consultants, stakeholders and Camden Council,” he said.

“It’s fabulous to see how well-utilised and appreciated the space is by the community.”

Oran Park Business Wins at Wollondilly Local Business Awards

Oran Park based Sydney Drafting Concepts and Design have won an award at the prestigious 2023 Wollondilly Local Business Awards recently.

Taking place at The Manor in Club Menangle, they were named the best in their category for Outstanding Professional Services. This was off the back of winning at the 2022 Camden Local Business Awards and being a finalist for the Australian Small Business Champion Awards.

Winning the award was a proud achievement for owner Byron Clima and his hard working and dedicated team.

“It was an amazing feeling. We put a lot of hard work and effort into the business, and it was great to be recognised for it. We feel honoured to receive the award and want to extend our thanks to everyone who voted and supported us” said Byron to the Oran Park Gazette.

Sydney Drafting Concepts and Design offer complete design and building services by licensed and passionate professionals. Their services include but are not limited to residential homes, renovations, extensions, brand new house builds, additions, knockdown rebuild, secondary dwellings, duplexes, apartments, retail stores, beauty salons, sporting complexes, walking tracks, parks, gyms and more.

“Passion drives the foundation for our success and that is what we strive for in each and every project” he added.

They don’t just provide custom designs; the complete package on all of their projects, including residential homes. Their experienced and passionate team can manage the entire project, that includes arranging surveyors, certifiers, council approvals and builders.

“Everything you need for the job, we have got you covered, no matter how big or small the job may be” explained Byron.

Byron and his team enjoy living and working in the local community.

“I love being able to meet and support local businesses. It is a big supportive network. The community offers a support system, where we all can rely on one another. Neighbours, community organisations, and local resources provide assistance during challenging times or help celebrate achievements. We sponsored a school fete recently, which fosters a sense of unity and provides opportunities for socialising and building connections” he concluded.

Camden Country Quilters Annual Exhibition

Camden Country Quilters Guild started in 1990, as a group that wanted to quilt and share their craft with others. Since then, they have fundraised and made quilts for many local organisations in our local community. Over the years, these have included Camden Hospitals Palliative Care, Campbelltown Cancer Unit, our local bush fire brigades, and retirement villages where they have given many quilts for the residents to snuggle under. They also support Turning Point, Kids of Macarthur, flood, and fire victims and many more organisations over the years.

They meet the 1st Monday of the month, at 7:30pm at the Wesley Hall, John Street in Camden.

As a community, they have Sit and Sew on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of the month and Community Quilt Day on the 3rd Saturday of the month. Their community days are dedicated to making the many quilts they donate into the area. They also host workshops with tutors to teach them new skills.

They hold an Annual Exhibition, where they show case their quilts and craft. The proceeds of which go towards the running of their guild and many community involvements. Their Annual Exhibition will be held on the weekend of the 5th and 6th of August 2023 at the Camden Civic Centre.

Kids and Pets: Tips for Building a Safe and Respectful Relationship

Around 63% of Australian households host a furry member of the family. Children reap many benefits from having pets; the research suggests that that beyond companionship, caring for animals may support the development of a child’s non-verbal communication skills and empathy.

Looking after pets can be a positive learning experience for kids, but the care of an animal should not be left to a child alone. Parents must play an active and thoughtful role in teaching children how to care for animals responsibly and safely.

Pets should never be bought or adopted on a whim (even if your child begs and begs). A cat or dog is a long-term commitment for the whole family. When calculating the forecasted costs of your new furry companion, do not underestimate veterinary costs over a pet’s lifetime.

Always supervise your child with the family pet. Be in eye and ear shot of toddlers and babies around animals and stay close in case you need to intervene. Keep animals securely contained and away from infants when you are not in the room and establish separate spaces in the house for pets and young children.

Help your child recognise your pet’s cues of stress or fear. Together, you and child need to look out for both the obvious signs of distress (e.g. cats hissing, dogs growling) as well as the more subtle signs (e.g. a cat swishing its tail). Children should be encouraged to give animals space when appropriate, including at sleeping and eating times.

It is essential that you model respect for animals so that your child can learn by example. Children learn more from observing us than listening to what we say. Show your child how to speak calmly and quietly with animals and handle them with gentleness. Praise your child when they do the right thing, for example “great job giving soft pats”.

NCNS in partnership with RSPCA hosts regular Pet Days at Cranebrook Neighbourhood Centre to offer subsidised desexing and micro-chipping. Check out our Facebook page to learn more: https://www.facebook.com/NepeanCommunity. Follow these tips and you can create a healthy and happy home for both kids and pets.

Book Review your

novel is a highly recommended addition to any bookshelf. She weaves a tale of magic, nature, and music based on Scandinavian fairy tales and legends.

The story revolves around Esther and her infinite love for her sister, Aura, who has disappeared. The family has fractured since the disappearance and they are all struggling with the loss. Esther sets out to discover the mystery of Aura’s last few months. A journey that takes her, reluctantly, from home in Tasmania to Denmark and the Faroe Islands.

While reconnecting with her family roots, Esther discovers myths, legends and symbols that begin a transformation in her as she finds the courage to allow herself to be immersed in grief, joy, and love. The local stories and legends are fascinating, and then she adds another dimension with the 'back to the 80's' themes, introducing fun cultural references from those years.

Initially I couldn’t relate to Esther, I found her tiresome and slightly irritating. It took a while for me to get into the book. But the writing is so delightful and almost musical, it is impossible to not become enthralled. In retrospect, I realise that this was about her journey and she didn’t really like the person she was either. Esther at the end is a different person. She had unresolved issues to face and Holly Ringland actually writes so beautifully about the pain of grief and loss and family conflict. Ringland’s prose is magical and written with gentleness.

I thoroughly enjoyed being transported to Scandinavia through Esther’s eyes, and the ending was satisfying.

Blokes Supporting One Another

Beer with the Blokes is a local men’s social group that meets every month at Gledswood Hills Country Club. They meet on the second or third Friday night of the month, from 5:30pm to 7:00pm.

Formed by local resident Brian Schick in 2018, the group began as Breakfast with the Blokes and would meet on Sunday mornings in Gregory Hills. Eventually, it would morph, allowing its members to come along without interfering with time with families on the weekend or work commitments.

“While the group is called Beer with the Blokes, it’s not about drinking beer. None of the guys who come are heavy drinkers, in fact, I don’t even like beer. It is simply an opportunity for guys to sit down together with a group of other guys and chat” said Brian, Group Organiser.

“As it is around dinner time, we often order a meal and eat together while we are talking. As most of us have been building or renovating our houses, we talk about the latest things we have done and learn from each other. We also talk about things that are happening in our community and each other’s lives. It is really just very relaxed, with no set agenda. Just a group of guys catching up for a social drink and a meal” he continued.

Beer with the Blokes is an open invitation to all men of any background, race, or religion to come and get to know other men in our community.

“Friendship builds community and all of us, I am sure, want

to live in a community where we feel like we are accepted and belong. As a man, I know that many men struggle with loneliness, and we need friends for our own mental health and wellbeing. It can also be hard to find friends sometimes if you are in a new community, away from your normal friends or family, or maybe like me, you are a bit of an introvert.

“Personally, I don’t want any man in our community to feel

that they are alone and that there is no one that they can talk to or who cares about them” he ended.

For more information about the group, look out for Brian’s event posts each month on the Gregory Hills Residents and Community Facebook page with the details.

At the July General Meeting of Oran Park Probus Club, the Speaker entertained our members with his talk about hand bells and hand chimes. He does not read music and took up this hobby on retiring, learning the songs by just hearing the music. He plays 25 bells with amazing dexterity and accuracy. We were treated to a selection of music from South Pacific, Phantom of the Opera, Show Boat, and the Trumpet Voluntary, amongst other pieces of music. There were a couple of stories, a joke that had everyone laughing and a final performance- Colonel Bogey’s March, which the Speaker admitted was a hard one to play.

Members from the Club also attended a Christmas in July dinner at Menangle Trots and were able to watch the races from the veranda or on the screens above the tables. Great fun for all and even Santa turned up for the occasion!

There are plenty of activities planned for the rest of the year and most of them involve food – day trips, lunches, coffee, and chat outings. A longer trip is being planned for Adelaide and the Murray River next year.

Are you semi-retired or retired and looking for some fun and new friends? Never heard about Probus before?

Why not come along to one of our General Meetings and find out more. Visitors are always welcome as are new members. General Meetings are held on the first Tuesday of the month (except November) at the function centre of Wests Lakeside Golf Club at Gledswood Hills, starting at 10am. You may like to stay on after the Meeting to meet some of our members who socialise together over lunch.

An active community such as ours always has plenty to write about, this month being no exception.

We always encourage our readers to be supportive of local events and businesses while actively engaging in local issues.

Today I took a call from a dear resident who simply called to thank us for making the Gazette available to readers, free of charge and directly to their letterboxes. She went on to say it was her monthly highlight and if it wasn't for us, she wouldn't have known where to go or who to turn to when she recently needed a new Garage Door.

I pinch myself each and every month as we compile the latest news and happenings across the community. I'm so very glad that I'm a part of being able to facilitate and connect the dots across the broader community.
