What's Happening

@

Oran Park Probus Club

Members of Oran Park Probus Club were all set to enjoy a month of activities, fun, and friendship but unfortunately, COVID-19 disrupted everyone’s plans. All meetings and activities of the club had been postponed for the month of July; however, we are hoping to resume pre-lockdown activities as soon as we are able to do so safely. Probus Clubs, throughout Australia and New Zealand, are social clubs for retired and semi-retired people in the community, offering friendship, fellowship, and fun to like-minded individuals. Once retired, many people wonder how they will fill their days. Family members often lead busy lives and live some distance away and the loss of a partner can lead to loneliness and an increased sense of isolation. Making new friends and starting some new activities may help to ease the loneliness. Joining a Probus Club is a good place to start. One way to make new friends is to take on an active role in the Club as a member of the management committee or as an activity leader or, just join an activity and have fun. At Oran Park Probus Club, we have monthly meetings which are held at Wests Lakeside Golf Club at Camden. Many members stay after the meeting to lunch together. We enjoy coffee and chat, pub lunches and fine dining events, walking groups and craft. A team attends Trivia nights and hopefully, the cinema group will be watching some good movies soon. If you would like to attend a meeting or would like to know more about Oran Park Probus Club, please contact the Secretary for further details on Ph: 0410 758755 or email: oranpark@probusclubs.com.au. Meetings are subject to Government COVID restrictions. r Members during brighter days @ the Pub Lunch in June | Image Supplied FAITH – NEWLIFE ANGLICAN ORAN PARK

Beyond Lockdown Life I trust that when you read this, we’ll be on the other side of Lockdown 2.0. It’s no fun returning to what we thought we’d left behind and even less fun when the threat turns up at Woolworths! I’m glad for the facility to do tests locally - even if the wait was long. As a church, we have been praying for all who are navigating the challenges of COVID and especially those navigating the twin ordeals of the home learning and work juggle. Where can we turn? At NewLife, we’re keen to make sure that the message of new life in Jesus can still ring out - even as we’re shut in our homes. To make that possible, we stream our church service every week. I often find that people tell me that they’ve ‘clicked before they come.’ In other words, it feels much more manageable to come to church if you have some idea of what goes on there before you poke your head in. That is made much easier with online church. If you’d like to join in, we’re online every week at the same location - www.YouTube.com/NewLifeOranParkLive and you’re very welcome. We’re live from 9:30am or you can join us ‘on demand’ at any time. And why go to all that trouble? We all need some hope that extends beyond our four walls. We all need some community to engage with. Many of us will feel the need for a fresh start. The Bible says, “It’s for freedom that Christ has set us free.” I’d love for you to find that freedom for our hearts even if this edition finds us still inside our homes. I hope to catch you at one of our services in person really soon - or online is always a great place to start. FAITH – ST MARY MACKILLOP CATHOLIC PARISH ORAN PARK

Article Written + Submitted by: Fr David Catterall MTh - Parish Priest @ St Mary MacKillop Catholic Parish Oran Park P: 02 4648 2226 W: www.marymackillopparish.org.au A: 94 Oran Park Drive, Oran Park NSW 2570 Facebook: www.facebook.com/oranparkparish Twitter: www.twitter.com/oranparkparish Once again, over recent weeks and months our community has faced further COVID restrictions (including the lockdown and ‘stay at home’ orders) that “out of an abundance of caution and love” have been put in place in stop the spread of COVID-19. As Pope Francis has said, due to COVID-19 protocols and restrictions: “the lives of millions of people have suddenly changed. For many, remaining at home has been an opportunity to reflect, to withdraw from the frenetic pace of life, stay with loved ones and enjoy their company. For many, though, this is also a time of worry about an uncertain future, about jobs that are at risk and about other consequences of the current crisis”. As he went onto say: “This is not a time for indifference, because the whole world is suffering and needs to be united in facing the pandemic. This is not a time for self-centredness, because the challenge we are facing is shared by all, without distinguishing between persons. This is not a time for division. May Christ our peace enlighten all who have responsibility in conflicts, that they may have the courage to support the appeal for an immediate global ceasefire in all corners of the world. This is not a time for forgetfulness. The crisis we are facing should not make us forget the many other crises that bring suffering to so many people”. But what is this a time for? For me, I think it is a time when we are being invited, amongst the members of our household and in our circle of acquaintances, to create a strong web of love to hold and care for everyone as this crisis continues to unfold. It also demands of us a patience and tolerance, and a willingness to share, and do tasks we might have taken for granted belonged to others. “Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these you did to me.” (Matt 25:40)

Residents can follow the new Nest Box Trail Map to connect with nature like never before, after the recent installation of 10 nest boxes at Harrington Forest. Council successfully secured funding of $20,000 from the Australian Government’s Communities Environment Program 2019/2020 last year, to restore the bushland through woody weed removal and installation of 10 nest boxes for native species. The nest boxes were decorated by children from a variety of local childcare centres and primary schools for native birds and mammals to use as a home. Mayor of Camden, Cr Therese Fedeli, said residents were now able to go on an exciting bushwalk to find all 10 nest boxes whilst exploring Harrington Forest. “Camden is surrounded by such a beautiful environment and residents are lucky to be able to take their families out to find all 10 nest boxes and see our amazing animals in their natural habitat,” Cr Fedeli said. “These nest boxes provide our native wildlife with a safe home, much like how we love returning home after a day at school or work. “Council has also removed weeds to help regenerate native vegetation in the area which is important in keeping the area in good stead for future generations to enjoy. “I’d like to thank the Australian Government for their support of the Camden area and hope all of our community can get out and check out the animals using the nest boxes”. New Maternity and Paediatric Hospital for Gregory Hills A new state-of-the-art maternity and paediatric private health facility dedicated to the well-being and healthcare of families in South West Sydney will be built in Gregory Hills and will open its doors in mid-2023. Construction will start in September 2021. Acurio Health have announced plans to build The George Centre, a $100m healthcare facility to help meet the needs of Camden and Campbelltown’s rapidly growing population. It comes off the back of an announcement by ASX-listed Home Consortium’s HealthCo arm about the joint venture with Acurio to develop The George Centre as phase one of a three phase, $500m+ integrated health and innovation precinct. The George Centre will complement existing services to help meet the family healthcare needs of Camden, Campbelltown and the surrounding community and be the first private paediatric-focused healthcare facility in NSW. Acurio founder and Medical Director Associate Professor Andrew Chang said: “There is a strong need for additional healthcare facilities in the area, particularly a dedicated inpatient paediatric service. We are building the largest private maternity and paediatric hospital in Sydney to ensure the community has access to exceptional care”. Mr Peter Sidgreaves, Member for Camden said: “Almost 20 percent of babies in our state are born in South West Sydney. The Camden LGA has the fastest population growth r

in New South Wales. “Over the next ten years, the Macarthur region’s growth is forecast to grow by 27 percent –making it almost the size of Canberra’s population. I welcome Acurio’s investment to provide additional services to compliment the public healthcare services within our community". Associate Professor Chang said the hospital will attract specialist doctors, allied health professionals and other clinicians. He pointed out that currently half of Camden region residents seeking health services, particularly paediatric and maternity, must travel outside the region. “By bringing these services together, The George Centre will reduce the burden of travelling long distances for specialist care,” said Associate Professor Chang. “Providing the best patient experience is the key focus of The George Centre – it will offer a truly patient-centric approach,” he said. The George Centre will have: • 78 beds: includes 57 overnight inpatient beds, across dedicated paediatric, adolescent and maternity wards • a dedicated day surgery centre • five operating theatres • four delivery suites • two endoscopic suites • a critical care unit • in- and out-patient radiology and pathology services • an on-site pharmacy • a multi-storey car park. Design of New Oran Park Fire Station Underway

Minister for Police and Emergency Services David Elliott has announced the commencement of the detailed design for a new fire station in Oran Park in Sydney’s south-west. Mr Elliott said that the NSW Government has committed more than $6 million for the construction of the Oran Park fire station in the 2021-22 Budget to allow our firefighting efforts in the Macarthur region to grow from strength to strength. “This is just another example of how our record budget for emergency services is delivering for the community and our emergency services workers. Our commitment delivers not only a fire station, but also two new firefighting appliances to bolster existing resources in the area,” Mr Elliott said. “Whether it be the new fire trucks, the lifesaving equipment which will be used on the job, or the state-ofthe-art facility, I’m confident that these additional resources will serve the firefighters and the Oran Park community well for many years to come”. Member for Camden Peter Sidgreaves said the new fire station was a great win for the Oran Park and surrounding communities. “Investments such as these made today will prepare these growing town centres for years to come and importantly will provide an additional emergency service for our community,” Mr Sidgreaves said. Fire and Rescue NSW Commissioner Paul Baxter said the new station will be designed to meet the needs of a modern fire service. “It will include a fitness room, separate male and female amenities, additional storage capacity for firefighting equipment, and a yard for undertaking drills,” Commissioner Baxter said. “The new station will feature modern training and recovery facilities to ensure firefighters are trained, rested and ready to respond to fires, rescues, road accidents, chemical spills and other emergencies”. Construction of the new station is expected to be completed by November 2022. r Peter Sidgreaves MP at the proposed site of the new Oran Park fire station | Image/Article: Peter Sidgreaves MP

Staying Fit During Lockdown

One of the biggest challenges when in lockdown during the pandemic has been exercise. Restrictions have meant that gyms have been unable to open, and we have not been able to train outside of home with family and friends. Harrington Park personal trainer, Nikki Auckland, has some tips to help us stay fit and healthy at home. There are basic exercises that can be done that will assist with your fitness. “Some of the best things to do during lockdown in terms of exercise is walking. Yes, I know that it sounds crazy and super simple, but it is such an underrated form of exercise and gentle on the body, making it perfect for everyone. The key with walking is to ensure that your heart rate is up and you're moving at a decent pace,” said Nikki. “My favourite type of training for a quick hit would have

to be Tabata tracks. They are timed tracks of 4 minutes with 20 seconds work and 10 seconds’ rest. I would highly recommend downloading a free Tabata timer for your smart phone and doing supersets for each body part for 4 minutes, like this: Tabata 1: squats/backward stepping lunges (do both exercises alternatively along with the rest breaks), Tabata 2: pushups/rolling planks, Tabata 3: bear crawls/ mountain climbers and Tabata 4: squat jumps/triceps dips” she continued. It’s important to keep your mind positive and your body healthy during lockdown. “Keeping the mind positive and the body healthy during lockdown is important in terms of short-term and longterm health. A lack of caring about yourself short-term due to the stress of lockdown can promote some unhealthy habits that are hard to shake long-term. Things like binge eating, drinking too much alcohol and being less active are all things that I have heard people experiencing during our last lockdown. Being someone who has a former anxiety, panic disorder, depression, and agoraphobia diagnosis, I know all too well how quickly the mind can change us. One of the best combinations to keep on top of a positive mind and a healthy body is fitness and nutrition” Nikki explained. “The best way to stay motivated and reduce the overwhelm is to start small. Habit stacking is a method that I use. If you implement any of my tips and methods, please reach out and let me know. I would love to see you staying positive and healthy during these times. You can catch me on Instagram @nikki.auckland or Facebook @ fitbodybynikki” ended Nikki. r

Take a Pic with Platty in Camden

PARENTS CORNER

Is Your Child Highly Sensitive? Is your child easily overwhelmed? Does your youngster find life changes particularly challenging? Would you describe your son or daughter as “shy” or “cautious”? Is he or she sensitive to bright lights or loud noises? If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, then you may have a highly sensitive child. Some children are born more sensitive than others. We don’t know why but researchers think it could be linked to individual differences in the brain and sensory processing system. Highly sensitive children are very “tuned in” to what they can hear, see, smell, taste, or touch. They also tend to experience emotions at a more intense level and for longer periods of time. High sensitivity is a personality trait that researchers estimate affects between 12 – 15% of the general population. While being highly sensitive can create difficulties in life, these types of children can do well with a little extra TLC and understanding from their caregivers. Highly sensitive kids have many gifts to share with the world, including creativity, compassion, innovative problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and an extraordinary aptitude for deep thinking and reflection. You help your highly sensitive child shine by following some of these tips: 1. Support them to see their sensitivity in a positive light. 2. Convey confidence that they are strong enough to deal with what is ahead. 3. Provide opportunities for creative expression such as art making or writing. 4. Support them to move outside their comfort zone in small, manageable steps. 5. Expect them to take a little longer to adjust to changes in their life. 6. Help them use their sensory system as a tool for calm by identifying soothing things they can see, hear, touch, and feel when they are distressed. Examples may include white noise, soft blankets or toys, or images of nature. If you are interested in learning more about supporting highly sensitive children, check out the writing of Dr Elaine Aron on hsperson.com and Dr Deborah McNamara on mcnamara.ca.

Platty is out and about in the Camden area, and she wants to get your attention and appear on social media. Whilst Greater Sydney is in lockdown, residents have exercised outdoors. This has seen them take to the area’s beautiful walking tracks – and that’s where our famous Camden Platypus comes into play. Mayor of Camden, Cr Therese Fedeli, said it was a great opportunity for residents to have some fun while on their daily walk. “We live in such a beautiful, scenic area and there are many fantastic parks and walking tracks to enjoy when you step out for your daily dose of exercise,” Cr Fedeli said. “Platty will be located at a couple of locations across the Camden area, so if you see her while on your walk, take a photo and share it on social media with the hashtag #camdenlove. “It is very important for the community to remain safe during this time, so please take your photo quickly and keep moving. “There are many other great things that our community members are doing during this difficult time, so if you see something, I encourage you to take a quick photo and use the #camdenlove hashtag as well”. Platty is now at two locations in our area, so look out for her on your daily walk. r Have you found Platty? | Image/Article: Camden Council

Community Answers Call for Students in Need

Prior to lockdown, Gregory Hills resident Merrit Labib put out a call to the community in aid of her School Bag Initiative. Locals answered the call in an amazing show of support, by donating 54 school bags that will go to students in need.

LONG DAY CARE

SCHOOL AGE

“I asked members of the community through social media if they would like to donate school bags with lunch boxes, water bottles and stationery to help students at a school who did not have them. The generosity was overwhelming. I cannot thank everyone enough for this” said Merrit to the Oran Park Gazette. Merrit first had the idea for the initiative back in 2003, when she came to Australia. She volunteered with the Red Cross for a breakfast program at a school. “I was so surprised to find some children going to school without food at all. I wanted to help but didn’t have much in the form of donations to help at the time” she said. In 2018, she went back to the school offering financial support for the students that came to school without food. “The principal advised that they could manage the food supplies, however they were in need of school bags and other items such as lunch boxes and water bottles. So, we started to collect them and ended up handing over 60 bags! This time, we had been approached by another school asking if we would like to help” Merrit explained. Merrit’s recent School Bag Initiative saw one family go above and beyond by donating 6 bags. There were also many requests for people to donate gloves and scarves because of Winter, and toys for children for Christmas. She plans on having another donation drive, after the restrictions have lifted and it is safe to do so. “I have heard that food donations have been affected because of COVID-19. I would like to look at this as an area to help in the future” ended Merrit. v The school bags, complete with a personalised note | Image: Merrit Labib

Locals Paying It Forward

Oran Park Pay It Forward is a local group, where members of the community can join together to help one another through donations such as clothing, furniture, or homewares. Paying it forward is when someone, who has received an act of kindness, does something kind for another instead of just accepting the original good deed. The group was created five years ago. Shane Rendell, who is the admin/organiser, joined the group a year ago. “I’m a local resident. My motivation to join was to help the community and to give back. We’re all in this together to help one another” said Shane to the Oran Park Gazette. Oran Park Pay It Forward has a Facebook group which boasts over 600 members. “The aim of the group is to assist people that may need that helping hand. Members have items that they would much prefer to see go to a good home rather than be thrown away. There is also no selling” he stated. Shane said that the group is well supported by the community and that there are many random acts of kindness that take place. "Most of us have been on the receiving end of a nice gesture from a stranger. It's a great feeling. This group allows members to do just that, which is positive. In keeping with current Government COVID restrictions, pick ups are contact-free throughout the LGA community too" he ended. FROM THEWORD EDITOR THE LAST Last month at this time, we were in the early days of the lockdown announced across Greater Sydney. I spoke about Winter being the ideal time to hibernate and catch up on your Netflix list enjoying delicious winter-rich meals and staying toasty by the heater. And here we are (as I write this) almost a month later, and I’ve all but exhausted my Netflix list and moved onto Stan. I’ve picked a few good books to catch up on some well overdue ‘reading’ time and in a Covid safe manner, set about hitting my daily exercise goals. As a family we’ve used this time to explore new and interesting things to do, including online cooking and art classes. It’s been a great opportunity to catch up on all those long overdue sorting and organising tasks that we never have time to do. Take each day as it comes. Times are tough for many. Try to draw on the positives. We will get through this. ‘Life is not about being rich, being popular, being educated or being perfect. It’s about being real, humble and kind’ remember that. Time to catch up on all the latest happenings in Your Community News.
