Closer to another milestone for Oran Park with the opening of Camden Council this month, we sit down with Camden Mayor Lara Symkowiak and talk all things local, motherhood and what she loves about our local Community.

A passionate, strong and determined woman who joined the liberal party at a young age feeling disconnected from her local Community and wanting to be more involved in making a difference and meeting new people with similar interests, it’s no wonder Lara has made some extraordinary achievements in the eight years she has served on Council, four of which have been the position of Mayor.

Having lived in the Camden area for over 10 years, Lara’s passion to grow and improve the Community shows in the many projects and Community initiatives she has been a part of. These projects include, improving DA processing times to one of the fastest in the state and leading the largest capital works program in Camden Council’s history with a focus on delivering new and improved sporting and recreation facilities such as the Narellan Sports Hub Stage 1 $9.8million, Oran Park Administration Building $35 million, Mount Annan Leisure Centre expansion $13.6 million, Birriwa Outdoor Youth Space which has been a phenomenal success at Mount Annan recently completed at a cost of $1.6 million, Argyle Street Camden improvement works $6 million, Narellan Family & Community Centre $1.8 million, Nott Oval Narellan new amenities building $650K and many more.

Daffodil Hope Cancer is a scary thing but it’s not until you personally experience it either yourself, a family member, loved one or close friend that you really feel the impact of what cancer is and how it can change your life.

According to the Cancer Council, more than one million Australians are currently living with cancer or have survived a cancer diagnosis and unfortunately almost all of us know someone living with cancer. Sadly, too many of us have also lost loved ones to this horrible disease.

August every year is focused around Daffodil day which raises vital funds for, and awareness about the work of the Cancer Council. This includes research, patient support services and prevention programs, helping support the 350 Australians diagnosed with Cancer each day. After experiencing a loved one pass away from Cancer your only hope is that one day a cure will be found so that you or your family will never have to endure the terrible disease. This is why donating to such an important event is always a top priority.

There are a number of ways to get involved which includes buying merchandise including pins from local supermarkets and participating outlets. Donating on line at daffodilday.com. au or you can even fill up your vehicle at any Coles Express site across Australia on Daffodil Day (26th August 2016 only) and Coles Express will donate 2 cents from every litre of fuel sold to Cancer Council. Early Christmas Carols Call No, it's not a Christmas Carols in August story.. though that might be a good idea for another year! This edition of the newsletter I thought would be helpful to give some super advance notice and invite you to put Carols in your diary for Saturday December 17th. NewLife Anglican Church started what we've called *Oran Park Community Carols* in 2012 with a small team of 6 and were delighted to draw a crowd of around 250 locals - pretty big for how large Oran Park itself was at that point!

Since then we've run our Carols bigger and better each year.

Last year we were very excited to see a crowd of over 2000 mums, dads, kids, and grandparents assemble on the grass of Gardner Reserve.

Each year we put on a great afternoon even before the Carols singing starts. That includes a climbing wall for teens, a petting zoo filled with fluffy animals for the little kids, two different jumping castles, facepainting, and craft for the kids. All of that is provided free of charge because we believe it helps you, our community, enjoy the celebration without having to reach into your pockets yet again to keep the kids entertained. Of course we've got no such hesitation asking you to pay for a hot sausage and a cold drink as that helps us (in part) pay for the event!

Overall, I love Carols as a key part in the life of our growing community when we can sit together and celebrate. Drop the date in your diary so you can come ready and excited to do the same. Anyone who has travelled can confirm that. A lot of people who had little to smile about in the latter half of the 19th Century in rural Australia began to smile because of the presence and because of the dream of a courageous young woman â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Mary MacKillop. Mary is one of Australiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s national treasures. More than half a century before women were allowed to vote, at a time when there was no compulsory education, when poverty was rife, when religious discrimination was widespread, when the plight of the Aboriginal people was deplorable, when unemployment was commonplace and communication and travel extremely difficult, Mary saw the needs and wanted to bring about changes â&#x20AC;&#x201C; which she did through her good works, her educational initiatives and her establishment of homes for the poor, orphanages and refuges.

Mary MacKillop is a person who embodied a life of faith-filled, humble service. Her faith was not complex or remote, and her deeds, though heroic, were carried out in beautifully ordinary ways.

It makes perfect sense that the newest Catholic Parish in Australia, which is located here in Oran Park, was named in honour of Mary MacKillop.

Our vision is that our new Parish â&#x20AC;&#x201C; that on 22 June this year celebrated our 1st birthday - will come to express, through its members, this same faith-filled, humble service in ways that are beautifully ordinary.

On our Catholic-Christian calendar, the day we remember Mary MacKillop is 8 August (the anniversary of her death).

No matter what our faith, our background or way of life I hope that all of us who call Oran Park and the surrounding suburbs â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;our homeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; will take up the challenge of St Mary MacKillop: â&#x20AC;&#x153;Never see a need without doing something about it.â&#x20AC;?

For months we have been watching in anticipation as the impressive glass building takes shape just along Peter Brock Drive. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s now time to see what all the fuss is about with the new Camden Council crew inviting us all in for a look.

Ignite The Science In You

As a kid, science was just another subject that I had no choice but to participate in. As an adult, science in everyday life is so fascinating that it’s made me wonder as a parent how I can get my children excited about science. What was once looked at as being nerdy and boring is now something that is cool, fun and interesting.

It keeps our kids brains active whilst asking those questions which sometimes stump us as parents, like “why is the sky blue?” or “where do stars come from?”. It’s a great way to spark ideas and encourage experimentation with how the world works.

Here are some simple activities and ideas that you can participate with your children to discover the wonders of science experimentation.

1. Home-made ice blocks can show freezing and melting.

2. Shining a torch at a mirror at night illustrates reflection.

3. Flying a kite shows wind speed and direction.

4. Looking at the stars and discussions about whole new galaxies can open up.

5. Adding various objects to a bath-time boat illustrates flotation.

6.

Watching a puddle change on the way to school for several days shows evaporation.

7. Leaving an egg in vinegar for a couple of days shows how the acid will eat away the shell.

8. Putting a celery stalk in a glass half full of water and coloured dye allows kids to witness capillary action.

9. Experimenting with various foods such as leaving bread to mould and talking about tinned peaches shows decomposition and preservation.

This August we celebrate National Science Week and events are expected to be held right throughout Sydney offering an array of activities with everything from science festivals, music and comedy shows, interactive hands-on displays, open days and online activities.

The festival is proudly supported by the Australian Government, as well as partners CSIRO, Australian Science Teachers Association and the ABC. National Science Week 2016 will run from 13-21 August. The Meal Mates Program is a great example of people coming together and sharing food and stories keeping each other company for those who may feel lonely. Camden Meals on Wheels are seeking more volunteers to assist in this program due to the high demand of need within our local area.

Meal Mates is a program developed to help people who are socially isolated due to ill health or other circumstances.

We provide a hot meal for the volunteer and the client. The volunteer delivers the meal and actually sits with the client and eats the meal with them, staying for approximately an hour.

When we asked Linda what she got out of volunteering she responded with “It’s enjoyable because I get a sense of fulfilment because I get to brighten someone’s day so it’s a win-win situation” National Meals on Wheels day is celebrated on August 31st.

Dental Health + all That Floss

A smile is contagious, it’s warm and inviting and gives everyone a fuzzy feeling inside. The first thing most people notice when they see you smile is those pearly whites that hide inside your mouth, neglecting those which can cause dental disease can not only impact your health and physical appearance but can also impact your confidence and ability to feel good inside.

While we all know how important it is to keep a healthy dental routine, we often forget to follow through. The biggest concern a lot of us have when visiting the Dentist is pain and price. When I recently visited the Dentist, these were the two things I was most scared about, particularly after leaving it for so many years between visits. I was pleasantly surprised walking out of there that this was no longer the case. Although price will vary depending on the procedure you require, pain was almost nonexistent due to the many pain relief options that are available including numbing creams and happy gas.

When speaking with local Dental Surgeon Dr Solomon from Oran Park Dental I asked him what his top three tips were to a healthy dental regime. His response was this – brush twice a day, only floss the teeth you want to keep and visit your Dentist every six months. By following these tips will help decrease your chances of mouth disease and keep your smile and your breath better than ever. Staying away from sugar is also a must. Did

you know that even just eating 1 tic-tac every hour is enough to decay even the cleanest of teeth?

Dr Solomon explains dental health very simply; “Dental disease is bacterial, there are no antibiotics that work against this bacteria in the mouth and the only effective way to control dental disease is by minimising the bacteria in your mouth, teeth and gums. This can only be achieved by constant oral hygiene which includes brushing, flossing and mouth wash” Children should also be exposed to dental visits regularly.

When asked the question how soon we should introduce them, the answer was as soon as possible between 2 and 3 is a good age but gradually take them with you on your visits so they see it as a normal process and not a daunting event. Dr Solomon’s tip is to make a toothbrush the first bath toy they play with, getting them used to the idea of brushing is a great start.

The dental chair doesn’t always have to be a scary thing, our mind plays tricks on us to believe that it’s all doom and gloom, but ask yourself this? Is it more painful dealing with a 6 month check-up, or dealing with painful bleeding gums and tooth aches? I know which I would prefer. Preheat oven to 180°C. Lightly grease an 8-cup capacity ovenproof bowl or pudding bowl.

Sift flour and 2 tablespoons cocoa into prepared bowl. Stir in 1/2 cup sugar. Add milk. Stir until well combined.

Combine remaining 1/2 cup sugar and 1 tablespoon cocoa in a small bowl. Sprinkle over surface of pudding. Gently pour boiling water over the back of a large metal spoon to cover surface of pudding. Dot with butter. Bake for 35 to 45 minutes or until a skewer inserted into the centre comes out clean.

Dust with icing sugar and serve with double cream or ice-cream.

“I’m still getting the hang of it! I’ve just had to be flexible and go with the flow. I think “juggle” is the key word here! It’s definitely a juggle. I’m very lucky to have a really supportive husband in Andrew. I’ve also had to learn how to do a lot of things onehanded. Having a little bit of down time without Airlie has been important too, relaxing with my girlfriends over a glass of wine is beneficial for my head space as my job (as Mayor and a new mum!) can be pretty stressful at times. Being able to relax with friends is important as it enables you to perform at your best in your professional life. The biggest tip for other mothers I can give is don’t fall into the guilt trap. I’ve only been a mum for 6 months and there have been so many times when I’ve felt guilty for doing this or not doing that. Acknowledge you can only do so much. I think you need to do whatever works for you and your baby.”

Whether you’re an educated political enthusiast or someone who just votes because you have to, it’s not hard to see how dedicated and genuine our local Mayor is and as a resident it makes me proud to know that our Council “gets things done” and every day improves our Community for the next generation.

Feline Immune deficiency Virus (FIV)

– Cat Desexing Program –

Feline Immunodeficiency Virus, or FIV, is a slowacting virus which suppresses a cat’s immune system over time. The main route of transmission is via infected saliva and blood, usually through fighting with other cats. Wild or feral cats are more likely to carry the virus, though domestic cats can also be infected. While most cats will not show overt signs of disease, an FIV-infected cat will be more prone to secondary infections, tumours, and possible infection of the brain which can lead to seizures and paralysis.

If your cat has been in a cat fight, it is important to seek Veterinary treatment for any wounds at the time as these can lead to abscess formation. Testing for FIV infection may be done at the time of the initial treatment to assess your cat’s current FIV status, as well as at a later date to assess whether your cat was infected from the current bite.

If your cat tests negative for FIV, then they can be vaccinated against it.

Unfortunately there is no cure if your cat is infected with FIV, though most cats can live a relatively normal life by following a few guidelines. Firstly, a FIV-positive cat should ideally be kept entirely indoors to reduce the chance of spreading FIV to other cats. Desexing will also reduce roaming and fighting tendencies. Any other cats in the household should be tested, and vaccinated against FIV if they are negative.

Regular, twice yearly health checks are recommended to promptly detect changes in health status and treat any diseases as they arise. For example, any degree of dental disease should be addressed promptly, as a cat with a suppressed immune system may not be able to prevent dental bacteria from spreading throughout the body. Regular general blood testing may also help detect signs of internal disease in earlier stages.
