Latest @ Luddenham by Wayne Willmington Thank you to everyone who made submissions to the Western Sydney Planning Partnership. They accepted 664 submissions, with duplicate submissions from the same people not accepted). Between 22nd February and 5th March, 133 landowners booked a one-to-one session with the Aerotropolis planning team to find about more about what the plans meant for them and to raise any comments or concerns. Western Sydney Planning is currently reviewing the submissions, prior to the finalisation of plans for the initial precincts. That is expected to be released around the middle of this year.

During April, Western Sydney Airport held another Open Day that was attended by hundreds of locals. They got to learn more about the Airport, as well as get up close to the machinery that is carrying out one of the biggest earthmoving jobs in the country. A few facts about stage one of the Airport that is being built in Luddenham: 3.7-kilometre runway, 25 million cubic metres of earth to be moved, and over 200 earth working machines onsite. Before work started, the height difference between the highest and lowest point is that of a 12-story building and when it opens in 2026 the International and Domestic Terminals will be under the one roof.

The recent Luddenham Easter Festival held at the Luddenham Showground was a huge success with thousands of visitors enjoying the rides and food.

Work is expected to start soon on the new toilet block at the Luddenham Progress Hall, thanks to a grant from Tanya Davies MP Member for Mulgoa. We are now just waiting for the final approval from Penrith City Council.

Also, the Luddenham Show Society are looking for items of interest for the Luddenham Museum that will be at the Showground. The Museum will focus on the rural and farming heritage of Luddenham, if you have any items of interest,

POLICE NEWS

Charges laid after Wallacia Armed Robbery and Wollongong Car-Jackings Detectives have charged a man following an investigation into an armed robbery at a licenced premise in Sydney’s west last month, and two car-jackings near Wollongong recently.

About 4.30am on Friday 2 April 2021, emergency services were called to a licenced premise on Mulgoa Road at Wallacia, following reports of an armed robbery.

Police were told a man – armed with a firearm – entered the hotel and threatened staff, before stealing cash and a white Holden Commodore that had been parked outside.

The man then left the area in the stolen sedan and was last seen travelling south on Mulgoa Road.

The two employees were not physically injured during the incident.

Initial inquiries were conducted by officers from Nepean Police Area Command, before detectives from the State Crime Command’s Robbery and Serious Crime Squad took carriage of the incident under Strike Force Decora.

During the investigation, police were notified of an incident at Mt Kiera on Tuesday 13 April 2021.

Police were told a man sitting in a parked prime mover on Harry Graham Drive, when he was approached by a man and a woman – allegedly armed with a firearm.

The man was allegedly threatened and detained, before the pair stole his personal items and the vehicle.

same road and approached the occupant of a parked Subaru Liberty.

The male occupant was also allegedly threatened with the firearm and forced from the vehicle, before the man and woman set fire to the prime mover and stole the Subaru.

Following extensive investigations, Strike Force Decora detectives arrested a 42-year-old man at Gregory Hills, about 2.30pm Thursday 15 April 2021.

Detectives searched the man and his vehicle, locating a vehicle registration plate, knuckledusters and a folding knife.

Officers subsequently executed a search warrant at a home on Bents Basin Road, Wallacia, where they located prohibited drugs and electronic items.

All items seized during the operation will undergo forensic examination.

The man was taken to Narellan Police Station where he was charged with three counts of robbery while armed with dangerous weapon and destroy property in company use fire.

He was refused to appear at Picton Local Court on Friday 16 April 2021.

As investigations continue, police would like to speak with a woman described as having long blonde hair and about 167cm tall. She was last seen wearing grey tack pants and a beige jumper.

Inquiries under Strike Force Decora are continuing.

Cars That Care a Big Success

The local community came together in Luddenham last month to support Cars That Care; a car show that helped raise funds that go towards local mental health projects.

The event, which was hosted by YAMHS (Youth Adolescent Mental Health Support), was a great success with many families and people turning out at Luddenham Showground for a day packed full of cool cars, food and drink, live music, and entertainment.

Over 100 cars took part in the car show, which was more than double that was anticipated. Car loving attendees were able to vote for their favourite cars, with the Top 5 walking away with trophies.

A special Giggle of the Day trophy was also awarded to a car of a different kind, which was an old, kids toy push car.

Food trucks and coffee vans were on hand and the live music was provided by school children and adults. YAMHS Youth Ambassadors ran mini yoga, arts and crafts, chocolate wheel and the main tents.

“It was brilliant to see the community come together and support those that suffer this silent and invisible condition. We hope to make this an annual event each year” said Katie from YAMHS. With gold coin donations given on entry and a fee for cars to enter the show, valuable funds were raised to go back into the community to support local mental health initiatives like coffee chat and educational programs.

The day could not have been a hit if it weren’t for the amazing work of the sponsors and volunteers.

“YAMHS is also looking for volunteers. If there is anyone out there that can spare as much or as little time as they can, please contact us” explained Katie to the Mulgoa Valley Gazette.

Forty years is a long time and it’s even longer to be servicing the community you’re in. That’s how long Wallacia Dental and it’s two Principal Dentists have been helping the families of Wallacia and the surrounding area. This month, Wallacia Dental is celebrating its 40th Birthday.

Back in 1981 when the new set of shops were being opened in Wallacia, Dr Max Kowalczuk could see a need for a local dentist.

He became the first, and only original, tenant of the shops on the corner of Mulgoa and Park Roads in Wallacia. Becoming a local icon with his charismatic nature, love for the area, as well as his passion for horses, his caring nature and great quality of dentistry created a Dental Clinic that quickly become an invaluable part of the district.

When it came time for Max to decide that he had fulfilled his promise to serve our community, he had the hard decision as to who to take over his legacy. That’s where Dr David Ager came in. Max and Dr Dave have been colleagues for years, with both meeting regularly as Dr Dave had worked in Penrith previously.

Max had only thought of Dr Dave to be his replacement, having no hesitation to make the offer for him to take over as he felt that he had the same principles that made Wallacia Dental what it is. So, in 2018 Max approached Dr Dave to take over and within 10 minutes the deal was sealed.

After 38 years, the practice needed a little updating. Dr Dave did a minor revamp of the clinic, with a new fit out including new chairs and systems. This was all whilst keeping the oldstyle personal attention as the base for making sure Max’s legacy continues.

Who is Dr Dave? Many have found that out for themselves by coming in to see, being relieved as well as pleasantly surprised how the culture of the practice is still there. He does have a passion for kids and making them feel that visit to the Dentist fun.

Looking ahead to what the future holds, Dr Dave is now a part of the local area and is bringing his flair for beautiful smiles.

NSW Government Scholarships to Support Apprentices in Mulgoa The NSW Government is providing $1.5 million to assist apprentices through the annual Bert Evans Apprentice Scholarship program, Member for Mulgoa Tanya Davies has announced.

100 scholarships worth $15,000 each will support apprentices who are experiencing financial or personal hardship and demonstrate a commitment to a career in vocational education and training.

Tanya Davies said the Bert Evans Apprentice Scholarship program offers a great incentive for eligible locals to kick-start their career.

“Last year Thomas Bridge and Tyler Saad from the Mulgoa electorate both received the Bert Evans Apprentice Scholarship, providing them with a fantastic opportunity to go further in their careers” Tanya Davies said.

“Apprenticeships are vital to ensuring NSW has a pipeline of skilled workers in growth areas, but we also understand it’s not always easy to complete a qualification.”

“I am urging aspiring apprentices in my electorate to apply for this opportunity to start, change or further their career”.

Minister for Skills and Tertiary Education Geoff Lee said the NSW Government is committed to ensuring training for apprentices remains accessible to all.

“As NSW has seen through the global pandemic, apprentices remain a crucial part the state’s economy and make a strong contribution to local businesses and communities” Mr Lee said.

“I encourage the people of NSW to explore the range of initiatives and programs available to support apprentices, including the Bert Evans Scholarship program and the NSW Government’s fee-free apprenticeships initiative”.

Too Much Violence Don’t turn away. This is serious!

Our lives and our children’s lives are being eroded by this insidious crime every day, all day, for years and years on end.

It robs adults of their mental health and wellbeing and it robs

children of their potential.

It costs the Australian economy in excess of 13 billion dollars per year in lost productivity and support services and hospital admissions. Imagine if a government department was losing that amount of money every year, there would be a public outcry, a royal commission, politicians would be losing their jobs.

This problem is domestic and family violence (DFV). You have probably read the stats. It’s more prevalent than you are led to believe. And unlike any other crime, the victims are usually blamed for the problem – ‘why doesn’t she leave?’ ‘if she didn’t do this, he wouldn’t do that’. The victim blaming causes more inaction and the problem just gets worse.

What is DFV? It is a pattern of manipulation, coercion, control, and violence. It’s not just incidents of violence, it is not just hitting. One person systematically erodes the other person (a partner, spouse, or a family member) financially, verbally, spiritually, emotionally, psychologically, sexually, and technologically. The victim is degraded to such a point that they don’t know who they are anymore, they constantly second guess what they are thinking, feeling and experiencing. DFV undermines the parent’s ability to be the best parent they can be and children are victims too.

Sometimes the User of Violence is really sweet for a while and the victim thinks everything is OK, but it always comes around to what the user of violence does each and every day to exercise power and control over the victim. It is NOT about anger management because many Users of Violence do not behave this way in the community and at work. Users of Violence frequently minimise and deny their behaviours and they blame the victim. It’s part of the pattern of abuse. They’ll do anything to not take responsibility for their actions. To be clear - there is absolutely NO circumstance where anybody is entitled to use violence within their family.

The answer is to stop blaming victims and make Users of Violence responsible for their beliefs, thoughts, and actions. We need to raise our sons to be respectful towards girls, and we need to raise our girls to have self-respect and be attuned to the warning signs of coercion and control. Let’s stop it at the start.

MOTHERS DAY

Wollondilly’s newest community garden has been opened.

Dilly’s Patch Community Garden in Silverdale was unveiled last month and is a joint partnership between Warragamba Silverdale Neighbourhood Centre (WSNC) and Wollondilly Shire Council.

The garden was officially opened on Tuesday 13th April by Lee Hodder, Community Development Manager of Warragamba Neighbourhood Centre (WSNC), with Councillor Judith Hannan and Councillor Matt Gould from Wollondilly Shire Council on hand for the day’s festivities.

It was attended by families young and old who were treated to gardening workshops from Bunnings and bead keychain making with the Healing Through Art program by Big Yellow Umbrella.

Dilly’s Patch consists of two 15m long gardens that can grow an array of herbs, fruits, and vegetables all year round.

“There is so much more to a community garden then gardening (which of course is very important). It also fosters good health, creates a sense of belonging and connection, a sense of purpose, it can empower, reduce isolation, and supports lifelong learning. This garden will bring together people of all walks of life and we hope it becomes an important part of our local community” explained Lee from WSNC. “It has been a journey and definitely an honour to watch the work that has taken place by our many volunteers and sponsors to create what we have so far. I will now enjoy watching it grow into a beautiful and functional community garden by the staff and volunteers that will nurture it” Lee continued.

Restoring Mulgoa Creek and Cumberland Plains Woodland In Glenmore Park and Mulgoa, organisations are working to restore Mulgoa Creek, build wildlife corridors and regenerate Cumberland Plain Woodland, a critically endangered ecosystem and one of the most heavily cleared landscapes in Australia. Mulgoa and Penrith region is already heavily cleared and fragmented. As clearing and development continues with little or no planning to conserve key linkages for wildlife, these groups are stepping up to ensure our wildlife and precious woodlands are protected and cared for. These groups are volunteer, and member based, and they need more volunteers to continue their amazing work for our environment.

They meet at different sites across the region, removing weeds, planting, monitoring wildlife and running fun activities for all ages.

One such group is Cumberland Land Conservancy and their amazing work to purchase and protect key properties for conservation and wildlife corridors.

Cumberland Land Conservancy Inc (CLC) is a volunteer operated not-for-profit charity dedicated to acquiring land for conservation, with a focus on the ‘Cumberland Plain’ of Western Sydney.

CLC stands apart as a community-based charity successfully securing biodiversity corridors in Western Sydney. They currently own and manage four properties – ‘Wallaroo’ in Mulgoa, ‘Thornbill’ in Agnes Banks, ‘Marsdenia’ in Llandilo and ‘Wombat’ in Mulgoa. Combined these properties cover a total of 49 hectares of habitat, protected

forever and linking key habitats in Western Sydney.

CLC is looking for new members and volunteers. Each member is a co-owner in their properties and a custodian on behalf of all the residents and wildlife of Western Sydney.

How to get involved? Come along to a working bee and become a member. Bush regeneration, wildlife monitoring, Streamwatch, Climatewatch and bird surveys are held across the properties.

Who: Anyone! No experience is required, just come along!

When: The first four Saturdays of each month, rotating around all 4 properties. Occasionally an extra event such as a planting day during the week is held.

Mini Foxie Show at Castle Hills Showground

The Mini Foxie Club of Australia has been around for more than 30 years with the aim of standardising, improving, promoting and safeguarding the breed. The Club is seen as the "peak organisation" for this iconic Australian breed around the world.

Their first show scheduled to be held in January 2021 at Castle Hill Showground had been postponed due to Covid clusters in the Sydney area.

It has been rescheduled to Sunday 30th May 2021, depending on Covid.

Seniors Get Social During Wollondilly Seniors Festival Many seniors in the Wollondilly have found 2020 and early 2021 to be a difficult and isolating time due to the impacts of COVID-19.

Council is pleased to be able to invite local seniors back out into the community to celebrate Wollondilly Seniors Festival 2021.

Mayor Robert Khan said, “We are encouraging our older residents to get involved with this year’s Seniors Festival with a range of activities on offer across the Shire during the months of April and May”.

“There is something for everyone, with a variety of COVIDsafe, fun, accessible and inclusive activities planned across the Shire hosted by local groups, service providers and Council”.

“We hope our seniors can take part and enjoy some new experiences, continue learning, share their many skills, get active and have fun”.

Activities this year will include a Nature Picnic at Nepean

So, are Some People Really Just “Inflexible”?

Folks often try stretching eventually resigning themselves to believing they’re naturally “inflexible”.

The key to their inability to lengthen muscles, comes down to two issues. Poor stretching: 1. regularity and 2. technique Usually individuals stretch for a few seconds, probably for less than 30. They often ‘push’ their stretches – to ‘feel the pain’, of a good stretch. Stretching-associated-pain is often a key reason why they don’t like to stretch and don’t do it for long. Stretching aggressively for short periods is often unlikely to gain effective long term increases in flexibility.

Little organelles ‘muscle spindles’, send signals from muscle to brain telling indicating muscle length. A bigger stretch sends a stronger signal. A strong-enough will elicit a ‘myotatic reflex contraction’ stopping you stretching your muscle further, and will be interpreted as painful. In short, flexibility has little to do with actual muscle and connective tissue length, but rather with how strongly and at what stretch-length the myotatic reflex elicits a contraction that resists further stretching.

Done correctly over a period of weeks, regular stretching modifies the way the ‘spindle-brain’ system reacts to stretch: 1. It dampens the strength of the signal sent to the brain by muscle spindles, 2. It makes the brain less sensitive to muscle spindle signals, 3. Reduces the likely hood of a stretch being able to elicit pain, and 4. Reduces the likelihood of any stretch being able to elicit a myotatic reflex contraction.

Thus, after regular stretching it takes a lot more muscle length to generate a spindle-signal strong enough to stop you stretching. That is, your body ‘learns’ to stretch further.

Hopefully, you can now understand that stretching is simply just a ‘learned skill’! As with any other skill, correct repetition of the skill, improves performance. So, to become flexible, a person must practice stretching regularly, and keep stretching to remain good at it. Next month we will review how to stretch your hamstrings effectively so that your practice doesn’t hurt and can be done just once or twice a week in order to reach and maintain an excellent range of motion.

Real Leadership

I’m hopeful that by the time this is published, the leadership issues in Parliament will be on their way to being resolved. I know these things take a long time to solve. There needs to be proper investigations and inquiries, to make sure the truth comes out, and then appropriate measures are taken, (restitution offered, appropriate disciplines handed out and new policies made). But I’m hopeful that by the time these words are read in May, our Parliament has made strides to right the wrongs that have come to light.

It’s a real shame when those who lead, those we elect, use their power and position for selfish gain, to bully or to abuse others.

It’s one of the great and terrible things about leadership. When it goes well it can go really well, and when it goes wrong it can be disastrous.

Good leadership can inspire, uplift, and make people feel cared for and safe. Good leaders get the best from those around them, share the victories and own the failures.

Bad leadership demotivates, oppresses, and damages people. Bad leaders, as we have unfortunately seen, use and abuse people. There is no safety or accountability, blame is passed on and the leader leads for their own benefit.

I won’t claim that the church has always done leadership well (wow, that’s an understatement), but in Jesus we have a wonderful example of what good leadership is like.

Jesus taught his followers what leadership should be like “Anyone who wants to be first must be the very last, and the servant of all.” (Mark Chapter 9 verse 31). Jesus taught that to be a leader was to be the first one to serve, the first one to help and the one who look after others.

And Jesus lived his words by teaching, healing, and caring for all those who came to him. More than that, he came to serve all of mankind, he made himself a ransom for the sin of all. Dying on the cross as the ultimate service, the ultimate leader for all who will follow him.

On the second Sunday of May, we celebrate Mother’s Day. I read a story about an American woman named Anna Jarvis, whose mother passed away in 1905. At a memorial service held on May 10, 1908, Anna gave everyone attending the service a carnation, which was her mother’s favourite flower. Anna suggested that a day should be set aside each year, to honour mothers. On May 9, 1914, through an act of Congress, President Woodrow Wilson, proclaimed that the second Sunday in May be declared Mother’s Day, as a “public expression of our love and reverence for the mothers of our country”.

In Bible times, the Israelites were held captive and forced to work as slaves by the Egyptians. The Egyptian leader Pharaoh, concerned by the increase in the numbers of Israelites bring born, compared to their Egyptian counterparts, ordered that every Hebrew boy that is born, be thrown into the River Nile.

One Hebrew mother Jochebed gave birth to a baby boy. Fearing that he would be killed, she kept her baby hidden for three months; but as the child grew, she worried that he would be discovered. To protect the child, she took a papyrus basket, coated it with tar and pitch and placed it the river each day, amongst the reeds.

Pharaoh’s daughters with her attendants would come to the river to bathe. They discovered the baby, as he lay crying in the basket. The baby’s sister Miriam watched at a distance, but showing great courage, asked Pharaoh’s daughter, should she fetch a Hebrew mother to nurse the baby for you. Yes, said Pharaoh’s daughter, and Miriam fetched her mother. Ultimately, the baby named Moses, grew up in the Pharaoh’s courts, and he was to lead the people of Israel out of captivity.

Whilst all of us had mothers, to women in general, both young and old, Happy Mother’s Day, from grateful sons and daughters. May God bless you, in more ways than you could imagine!
