Former Safari Park The Perfect Setting For Quality Homes Allam Property Group, one of Sydney’s largest and most progressive residential development groups, has announced plans for the construction of 447 homes within a new residential estate, Mirragan at Silverdale in New South Wales. Once Wollondilly Shire has reviewed and approved the residential development, Mirragan Silverdale will be constructed in stages by Simba Developments over the next five to seven years, with Allam proposing to build up to half of the new homes in this estate. Mirragan is located in a beautiful bushland setting close to the Silverdale and Warragamba villages, taking advantage of the park-like setting of the former Bullen’s African Lion Safari Park, which closed in 1991. Some features of the former park will be preserved and reinterpreted in the landscape design through the retention of vegetation on site, while the main dam will be adapted to form a feature lake as part of a new subdivision design. EDQJHOVHUYLFH FRP DX Local Resident Erica Berton along with other members of the community, have started work on getting a Retro-Fashion Dressmaking course underway in the local area. While all classes and specifics are still in planning, Erica has revealed some interesting information to excite potential participants. Erica’s intention is to run a four-week dressmaking course on Saturday’s from 10am - 1pm through the months of May and June. The course will hopefully be held at Warragamba Town Hall and the course will come at a cost of approximately $60 per person for the four weeks. Those who attend will be taught how to adjust and modify clothing to their desired shape and size but will need to buy their own fabric, supplies and patterns. Erica has expressed that “Many retro fashion pieces are actually rather easy to make.� She hopes to work with many people within the local community and is passionate in helping them to learn how to make their own fashionable pieces. Amongst other styles, the course will include lessons on Circle Skirts and Rockabilly pieces that Erica believes will be rather popular in the course. Circle Skirts are so simple. They are “2 metres of fabric, 3 seams and a zip� says Erica. Its now all about helping those who participate to take that simple sequence and customize it to their own desired style. With the classes currently still in planning, more information will be made public as it becomes available.

The first Anglican Church service in the Mulgoa district was held in a barn on February 11th 1827 by Reverend Thomas Hassall. He lived in Cobbity and had such a huge area to cover that he became known as the Galloping Parson. Mulgoa was one of the richest farming areas in the colony and a fund was set up to build a Church. Edward Cox of Fernhill donated 5 acres of land for the Church and George Cox of Winbourne donated 38 acres for the parsonage. The foundation stone of the Church was laid on August 22 1836 by Jane Jamison, the 14 year old daughter of Sir John Jamison of Regentville. The beautiful golden sandstone came from the quarry at Fernhill and the Church was built by free labour rather than convict labour which was quite unusual at the time. The Church was consecrated on September 13 1838 and Reverend Makison became the first resident rector with his wife and children. The Rectory was a two storey Georgian style house with fourteen rooms and was to also be used as a boarding school. James Hassell published his memoirs in 1902 ‘In Old Australia’ and wrote about his time as a pupil at the Rectory. There were 12 boys as boarders and 3 of the Cox boys as day scholars. He talked of the Cox family kindness and said ‘Mr George Cox allowed me to keep a horse at his place’ and ‘he never forgot us in Fruit season or at picnics.’ There was a terrible drought about 1840 and food was very expensive. ‘Every evening us schoolboys used to satisfy our hunger by gathering wattle gum after school hours and eating at least a couple of pounds each at a time.’ There have been many changes over the years and the Church building and grounds are now owned by the Anglican Schools Corporation with the plan to build a new school in the future. Breath of Fresh Hair @ Hair Envy Wallacia Local Mulgoa Resident Renae Fenech has officially taken over Angelic Hair Studio and is excited to finally introduce her very own salon, ‘Hair Envy’. Renae took over Angelic Hair in March 2016 after working for the salon for just over a year. According to Renae, she has “always had a passion for hair from a very young age”. Acting on her passion, Renae began working in the hair industry. Still living in Mulgoa, Renae feels a sense of connection and gratefulness to be working in such an incredible community. Through her experience at Angelic Hair Studio Renae says “I am so grateful to have [had] the pleasure of meeting so many of our friendly local residents.” Taking over the previous salon was Renae’s first step in building her own business. She says she has “always wanted to eventually open [her] own salon and this was the perfect opportunity as [she] had already gotten to know all the clients.” Following the take over, Renae made the decision to change the name of the salon to Hair Envy. She did this in the hope of giving the salon a fresh look and also enhance her sense of ownership of the salon. Renae has many exciting ideas for her new business including the introduction of incredible products and services that all customers will love. She hopes to continue to build her clientele, while also fulfilling all their customer needs. Clients have a lot to look forward to at Hair Envy. A series of new products have made their way into the salon and Renae says she will continue to “make her clients hair looking and feeling beautiful.” She also intends on keeping everyone up to date on the latest hair trends. Pastor’s Corner The second Sunday in May is Mother’s Day; a special time where you can take time to remember the contribution that your Mother made to your life; for some of us that is full of happy memories, but for others that may be more difficult. I read this amusing story about one mother: One summer evening, during a violent thunderstorm, a mother was tucking her small boy into bed. She was about to turn off the light when he asked with a tremor in his voice, “Mommy, will you sleep with me tonight?” The mother smiled and gave him a reassuring hug. “I can’t dear,” she said, “I have to sleep with Daddy.” A long silence was broken at last by a shaken little voice saying, “The big sissy.” My mother passed away at forty nine years of age, far too young, after a year-long battle with cancer. Sometimes her birth date 13th May will coincide with Mother’s Day. On Mother’s Day in particular, I think of her and her contribution to my life; My Mum taught me to feel loved, safe and secure; to have the courage of my convictions; but also to consider the needs of others. My Mother was not a lady of great faith in God, she was more of a nominal believer, she would only attend church at Christmas and Easter, plus the occasional special occasion. Each of my three daughters are mothers; similar in some ways to their mother, my beautiful wife, now grandmother to seven, but each daughter brings their own individuality to mothering. When Jesus was on the Cross dying, the book of John19:26 records ‘When Jesus saw his mother there and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to his mother. “Dear woman here is your son,” and to the disciple, “Here is your mother.” From that time on, the disciple took her into his home. So Happy Mothers’ Day to all women, whether you are a mother, or whether you are not. Thank you from a grateful man, for your making lives better. God Bless, Lyndon

Fresh News for Warragamba A new Fruit and Veg business has just opened in Warragamba with lots of fresh produce being available daily in store as well as offering direct home delivery. Owner of ‘Always Fresh Fruit & Veg’ Elizabeth, originally started her business as a fresh Fruit & Veg home delivery service. She has now extended her business into a shop which provides the local community with fresh produce daily as well as a lolly selection, back to school selection, chocolates and drinks. Always Fresh Fruit & Veg only opened at the end of April and already business is going well. Elizabeth has said “I did not do a lot of advertising before I opened, but even despite that, business has been really good!�. Heat oil in a casserole or large, deep frypan over mediumhigh heat. Cook pancetta and chorizo, turning, for 2-3 minutes until starting to crisp. Remove and drain on paper towel. Drain excess oil and fat, leaving 2 tablespoons in pan. Return the pan to medium heat. Add the onion and capsicum and cook, stirring, for 5 minutes or until softened. Return the pancetta and chorizo to the pan with the garlic and oregano. Stir for a further minute, then add the potatoes, chickpeas, wine, passata and stock. Season, bring to the boil, then reduce heat to low and cook for a further 10 minutes or until the sauce has reduced and thickened. Garnish with parsley and serve with crusty bread.

Last month was certainly a big month for Luddenham, on the 6th of April the Luddenham Progress Association Members voted to become an Incorporated Association and adopt a new constitution. The Show Society also adopted the recommendations of the “Fit for the Future Subcommittee�, now with ideas to take the Show & the Showground into the future. The proposed improvements are now being costed and they are hopeful of government grants to help. On the 13th of April over 50 local residents attended a public meeting organised by the Progress Association about our Science Park. Jeremy Spinak from Celestino talked about the development as well as answering many questions; with the construction value estimated to be $2.5billion. The development will be built over a 15 year period with stage 1 (Southern Side closest to Luddenham) starting soon after the final signature is
received, which is expected soon. Looks like it is going ahead. On the 15th of April, Fiona Scott MP organised a meeting at the Luddenham Showground with Assistant Minister for Cities and Digital Transformation, Angus Taylor MP and Penrith Deputy Mayor Ross Fowler to discuss the future for our local area and its current issues. It was a very productive meeting discussing concerns such as Airport, Railway, Development and Luddenham’s future. The recent redistribution of Federal boundaries means that Angus’s electorate of Hume now covers most of the Luddenham district. In Early May the Luddenham Progress Association will be delivering petitions to about 150 Luddenham houses that are in Liverpool Council, asking the residents to support the Progresses aim to have the area west of the airport boundary moved into Penrith Council. Luddenham does need to be in one Council and the airport fence would make sense. Luddenham now has its own Hot Rod Club “The Regency Ramblersâ€? they are based at the Showground and on the 17th of April held a Charity Swap Meet and Show & Shine that was a great success. This month we continue the series on Parent Traps that we started last month. ‘Escalation traps’ are one of the most common type of parent traps, and involve ‘child escalation’ and ‘parent escalation’. Child Escalation When children want something and don’t get it, they can learn that by escalating in their behaviour or emotions (hitting, crying, whining, nagging) they can get what they want. For example, a child wants a lolly in the supermarket. Although you say ‘no’ the child gets louder and more demanding, and you give in to avoid the fuss and judgement from other people in the store. What is my child learning from this? Parent Escalation When parents want something from their children they can escalate (nagging, shouting) to get the child to complete the task. For example, you want the child to switch off the computer and come to dinner. You ask several times and each time gets louder. You get to the point where you are screaming at your child, counting, or making threats and demands. This is where the parent says “my child never listens to me”. What is my child learning from this? Combination of Parent and Child Escalation Yes, you can have a combination of child and parent escalation. The parent escalates in response to the child’s escalation, and fairly soon tempers are frayed, feelings are hurt, and nothing productive or helpful has been achieved. Remedy? Give clear, calm instructions. Stay calm, and follow through, so that your child knows that when you say ‘no’ you mean ‘no’ and when you want something done it gets done within a reasonable time frame without a fuss. And as always, continue to build a strong relationship with your child based on love, nurture and trust, because the strength of the relationship determines how much your child will listen and respond to you. Kindergarten Readiness – Will Your Child be Ready to Start School?
Who will be ready for school next year, and who will benefit from another year at preschool? Parents frequently worry over this decision and often turn to preschool educators, carers and other parents for advice. While there is no simple answer, it’s generally agreed that children must be socially and emotionally mature enough to cope with the extra demands of school. Each child develops at a different rate, and many will undergo huge changes between now and next January. Starting school is a time of change for children and for families, as they experience a set of demands and make adjustments to meet those demands. There are three levels of change which impact on how children and families experience their transition to school phase; Individual Level: The major change children report is that they are ‘big’ and now at ‘big school’. Adjusting to a range of school
expectations about attendance, uniform, possible involvement at school and homework Relationship Level: as some relationships are lost, others are built between and among children, families and school staff. Building these relationships may require new strategies—for example, communicating with teachers at school can be different from communicating with educators in prior-to-school settings. Contextual Level: When children start school, families need to coordinate school, family and work responsibilities. Making sure that children are at school at specific times may mean that schedules for other family members need to change. This can be quite challenging if different children attend different schools, or if work, family and school schedules conflict. The Educators at Warragamba Preschool are aware of these changes and are well placed to create responsive and supportive educational environments for all involved in the transition to school. School readiness is not just about being able to read or write or count. Readiness is also about emotional and social maturity. Some of the issues parents and educators need to address: • Can they make an independent decision and follow through on this? • Do they have ideas of their own? • Can they follow two or three instructions at the same time? • Do they separate well from their carer? • Do they show interest in other kids? • Do they interact with other children? • Can they recognise and express their feelings and needs? • Can they concentrate on a task? As children grow and develop, families make adjustments and changes. One of the major adjustments families make is in response to children starting school. Starting school can be stressful for children. The buildings are bigger, there are more children and they are the smallest in the playground. There are fewer adults and more rules which they don’t know and for many the classroom will be more formal. Could Your Diabetes be Causing Your Back Pain? An estimated 917,000 (5.4%) Australian adults have diabetes of some type today. Self-reported diabetes more than doubled from 1.5% in 1989–90 to 4.2% in 2011-121. Importantly having diabetes greatly increases your risk for many back problems including: 1. Lumbar and cervical disc hernation2,3 (the old slipped disc) 2. Lumbar disc infections and inflammation4 which is associated with 3. Increased degenerative (Modic) changes to your vertebra 4. If you require a back operation the likelihood of: a. Success is much lower in diabetics, b. Further disc herniation is greatly increased5 and, 5. People with degenerative (type 1 Modic) changes show much poorer improvement levels6 So how does this happen? Most diabetics today have Type 2 diabetes, basically a dietary deficiency disease. Vitamins, minerals and other vital substances help the body build strong discs and vertebrae. With poor nutrition discs and bones (which are continually rebuilt) slowly become weaker. Eventually you lift something and a weakened disc herniates. A herniated disc develops blood vessels (as it repairs). These new vessels bring bacteria to settle in the disc. Now you have an infection which leads to further back issues. This is much more likely in diabetics because excess glucose in the blood (hyperglycaemia) negatively effects overall immunity & hyperglycaemia makes infections more likely by: 1. Reducing white blood cells to infection fighting capacity so helping microbes to thrive in the body 2. Making skin (one of the key barriers in innate immunity) less competent 3. Negatively affecting the body’s ability to respond to antimicrobial therapy7 So now, as a diabetic you’ve set things up such that your chances of getting and keeping a back problem are quite high. Many of our patients with back problems also have diabetes. Now you can see why. The diagram below details changes we see in many of our diabetic patients with back pain. For these people clinical nutrition helps control (type 1) and regress (type 2) diabetes, while muscle elongation therapy treats their back issues.
