Latest @ Luddenham by Wayne Willmington Here is an update on the name for the old Northern Road thru Luddenham. Transport for NSW have had pre-approval from the Geographical Names Board to rename it to Willmington Road in recognition of the late Artie Willmington. Liverpool Council have endorsed the name and Penrith Council have asked for feedback from residents that closed on 25th June.

If no objections are received, the naming request will be forwarded to the Geographical Names Board for approval and gazettal. Until that time, the road will still be the Northern Road.

On the 2nd of June, Professor Roberta Ryan the Independent Community Commissioner, attended a meeting of the Luddenham Progress Association, giving our members the chance to voice their concerns regarding the Luddenham of the future. She took lots of notes and received lots of feedback.

Professor Ryan was appointed by the State Government to address the concerns of landowners in the Western Sydney Aerotropolis.

On the 4th of June, The Hon Paul Fletcher Minister for Communications, Urban Infrastructure, Cities, and the Arts, was in Luddenham to announce the contract for the construction of the terminal at Western Sydney International Airport had been awarded to Multiplex Construction Pty Ltd. Terminal construction alone is expected to create more than 1,400 direct jobs and thousands more indirect jobs through its flow-on benefits to suppliers and the local economy. Terminal construction is due to begin at the end of the year and the terminal will be in Luddenham.

The Upper South Creek Advanced Water Recycling Centre

is what will bring the sewer to Luddenham. Sydney Water is helping to shape the Western Parkland City using a total water cycle approach to deliver sustainable wastewater and recycled water services. In planning the centre, they have looked at the best use of water resources across the catchment, moving from single water use to multi-reuse. They will be installing from the Kemps Creek site a pipeline along Elizabeth Drive - Park Road to Wallacia. They will be holding an information pop-up at Luddenham Village Café (Caltex) on Saturday 3 July between 1- 4:30pm.

Thanks to Tanya Davies MP for organising a Grant from the NSW Premier for $9,500 for the Luddenham Show Society to build a workshop and storage shed on the Showground.

SUE DAY This month marks a new era for popular local Warragamba restaurant Pietro’s, with Peter and Rita stepping away from the business for a well-deserved break and Silverdale’s Anthony Penna taking over as the new owner.

“The community embraced Peter and Rita because they treated you like family as soon as you walked through the restaurant door. How many other restaurants would welcome you with a bowl of homemade meat balls as soon as you sat down? There is no pretentiousness with Peter and Rita, just great people with a goal to share the experience of great food” explained Anthony.

Anthony has been going to Pietro’s as a patron since the beginning and he has been an acquittance with Peter for a long time.

“Peter offered me the business because he believes that I will continue on as he has to date. Although he may have had offers, he could not offer the business to anybody else knowing full well I would do the right thing by the business” Anthony said.

Sitting and enjoying a meal at Pietro’s is the culmination of a multi-generational culinary journey originating to Peter’s Nonna’s kitchen. This was passed on to his mother, then to Peter and then to the Chefs at Pietro’s.

“In my opinion, this is the difference, the fact the menu is true to its origins” stated Anthony.

Anthony is looking forward to taking over the business this month, “I hope to ensure that, with a fresh energy (and new cocktail menu) that the food remains to the rustic, homey feel that has been experienced to date. I don’t see myself as the ‘new owner’, I see myself as the custodian of great food and essentially history on a plate. I have been entrusted to continue this and I will continue doing it with the respect and trust Pietro’s deserves”.

“You cannot change too much of a proven recipe, so the menu will remain the same to the exception of seasonal specials as the chef/cooking staff will remain as they have to date. A new look inside and a new bar is on the way with the inclusion of a cocktail station, after all great food deserves a great companion in a drink” he ended. r

Local MP Continues the Fight for Wallacia

The NSW Government has committed to engaging with the Catholic Metropolitan Cemeteries Trust over the next 4 months to work through the challenges facing the burial sector in NSW. The remaining four trusts have now been amalgamated into OneCrown with an Administrator overseeing the review of their operations and devising a plan to address burial needs and put downward pressure on the cost of burials.

I remain resolved to oppose the plans to turn the Wallacia Golf Club into a cemetery. I know there are other sites with DA approvals for cemeteries in and around my electorate so there is no shortage of land to meet the need for burial space. But there is a shortage of recreational and sporting grounds in this part of my community which is why I am fighting the cemetery proposal.

I will continue to keep my community informed as we work through these challenges together and I thank them for their patience.

Nepean Ducks Ready to Fly The Nepean Ducks are preparing to take flight, with the 2021 season kicking off on 14th August.

The local gridiron club have begun preseason training on Mondays and Wednesdays from 7:30pm to 9:30pm at Cranebrook Park in preparation for a big year ahead.

This year, there will be a Mens (18+) team, Colts (16-19) team and they are planning to submit a Womens (16+) team.

Since forming in 2014, the Ducks have grown to be a strong club. Last year they had 50 Mens and 34 Colts players take the field.

“Gridiron is an inclusive sport that has positions catered to all body types. The Ducks focus on the fundamentals of football and providing opportunities for all players to get on the field.

Our club has a good sense of camaraderie and amazing club culture” said Glen Bowes and Darren White of the Nepean Ducks.

What advice does the club have for anyone wanting to take up gridiron?

“Our advice would be to come down and have a go. For most people it only takes one training session to get hooked on the sport and want to invest their time and energy into it”.

The Nepean Ducks currently have positions available for all teams. The club also welcome any potential sponsors too.

Investigation Underway After Serious Crash – Luddenham Police are appealing for witnesses after a man was seriously injured in a multi-vehicle crash in Sydney’s west last month.

About 5.20pm Monday (7 June 2021), officers from Nepean Police Area Command were called to The Northern Road, Luddenham, after reports of a crash.

Police have been told a white Volkswagen Caddy traveling south collided with the rear of a blue Toyota Hilux utility, forcing the Hilux onto the wrong side of the road and into a Volvo tipper truck traveling northbound.

The Hilux also impacted with a green Ford Falcon which sustained minor damage in the crash, before catching fire and trapping the 32-year-old male driver inside.

He was freed by bystanders and treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics for serious internal injuries, then taken to Westmead Hospital where he remains in a critical condition.

The driver of the Volkswagen, a 17-year-old boy who is a P1 provisional licence holder, was taken to Nepean Hospital where he underwent numerous scans and treatment for non lifethreatening injuries.

Meanwhile, the driver of the Ford, a 40-year-old man, and the driver of the truck, a 26-year-old man, were arrested and taken to Nepean Hospital for mandatory testing.

A passenger in the Ford, a woman aged 64, was uninjured.

Officers from Nepean Police Area Command established a crime scene and specialist investigators from the Metropolitan Crash Investigation Unit have commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash.

Investigators are appealing for anyone who witnessed the crash, or has dashcam footage from the area at the time, to contact police.

Life Links Discos Come to Wallacia Local business Life Links have announced that they will be bringing their popular discos for adults with all abilities to Wallacia, starting this month.

The discos will begin on Friday 16th July at Wallacia Hotel, from 6:30pm till 9:00pm. They will then return on the third Friday of the month. Entry fee to the discos will be $15 per person and carers will be free.

Life Links started in 2014. They believe that people with support needs should have the opportunity to participate in age-appropriate activities that anyone else their age would like to attend. Their events are open to people (over 18 years) of all abilities and are held in venues that are accessible, age-appropriate and promote community integration.

They currently have discos on the second Friday of the month at Henry Sports Club in Werrington and Singles Dinners on the last Friday of the month in Penrith.

“Our discos at Henry Sports Club are popular. We are excited to bring this to Wallacia” explained Kristie Findlater of Life Links.

The discos bring together a good mix of people of all ages and the music that is played caters for everyone.

“It’s a great opportunity to get up and dance and have some fun,” said Kristie.

“We hope that our new discos at Wallacia will build up and grow in time” she continued.

With the temperatures dropping, Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) is strongly urging the community to stay out of harm this Winter by being home fire safe.

There is a 10 per cent increase in the number of house fires during the cooler months with more fires in bedrooms and loungerooms due to heaters, electric blankets, and the like.

In 2020, FRNSW attended 3,740 residential house fires.

This year, it has already attended more than 1,270 residential house fires. Of these, seven have been preventable fatalities.

FRNSW Commissioner Paul Baxter said it was vitally important for people to have a working smoke alarm in their home and to test it regularly.

“Every year, approximately 20 people die in NSW from fires that could have been prevented,” he said.

“Each death is a tragic loss for families, friends and the wider community.

“Additionally, for each fire fatality, there are also hundreds more people who survive a fire but suffer life-changing health consequences.

“A fire can take hold in just three minutes, filling your home with deadly smoke.

“For less than the cost of a family takeaway dinner, you can install a smoke alarm which may just save your life and the lives of your loved ones.

“Don’t become a statistic – stay out of harm and have a working smoke alarm this Winter.”

FRNSW Commissioner Baxter said firefighters are committed to reducing the risk of home fires and to protecting the irreplaceable.

“However, the best way to stay out of harm this Winter is to take measures to prevent a fire from occurring in the first

Bottle-O Silverdale have been named as the ‘Retailer of the Year NSW’ in the 2021 Independent Brands Australia (IBA) Five Star Awards, which were held last month.

The Awards were held at the Hyatt Regency in Sydney on 10th June, which saw Bottle-O Silverdale take out the title ahead of 6 finalists.

The popular local business was initially nominated through Independent Brand Australia (IBA). Part of the judging criteria also involved mystery shoppers visiting the store.

“Thank you, Peter and Maryanne. It’s a privilege to work here and manage the store. I would also like to thank my staff Kat and Christine. Most importantly, thank you to all our amazing customers. We wouldn’t be here without the local community, and we appreciate all the support” said Gloria Falzon, Manager of Bottle-O Silverdale to the Mulgoa Valley Gazette.

This is the first award that the business has won since the renovations took place in April 2020.

They are finalists in the Local Business Awards, which will see the winners announced this month.

Most of us would have heard of giving kids a ‘time out’ when they’ve done something wrong. You may have experienced sitting alone as a child, in some boring and bare corner of the room, waiting for a parent or teacher to allow you back. ‘Time out’ has been a staple of the child behaviour management tool kit for decades, but many are now asking- is there a better way?

The logic behind ‘time out’ is that most kids hate it, so they will behave ‘well’ in order to avoid it. However, what we now know from decades of research into child development, is kids don’t usually set out to be ‘bad’.

Often, kids do bad things when they are stressed out. This may be because they are tired or hungry, or they can’t solve an important problem. Recent advances in brain imaging have shown us that a spike in stress reduces functioning in key areas of the brain involved in thinking ahead and considering consequences. These same areas of the brain are already under development in children and teens. So, add a little too much stress, and you have a recipe for disaster!

Kids are hard-wired to connect with the important big people in their life so they can survive until they are old enough to take care of themselves. When kids see us paying attention to them, and giving them care, they know they are safe. Safety creates calm, and calm brains can solve problems without hurting anyone or breaking anything.

‘Time in’ is a strategy that uses your relationship with your child to help them settle and think through the situation. What it looks like is taking your child somewhere safe, sitting down and chatting about what went wrong. It’s not about free passes for bad behaviour. It’s about understanding why the behaviour happened, and what can be learned- how can they manage this problem better in the future? It can also involve discussing ways to right the wrong, such as apologising to a hurt sibling or replacing something that was broken. r

Chronic Shoulder Pain – Cured By What You Eat? Some people come to the clinic with what seems like a simple shoulder problem that should respond well to physical therapy, but then doesn’t. Ongoing shoulder pain may not be driven only by the original injury and on such occasions gut-derived autoimmune/inflammatory processes should be considered as a possible contributor.

Recently a patient presented with two sore shoulders, brought on by workers comp pre-return to work shoulderstrength testing. Ultrasounds showed evidence of bursitis, slight shoulder tendons wear and tear, pain in the front of both shoulders; extremely limited range of motion - especially of the left.

The patient received physical therapy for several weeks with minimal improvement. She was advised that the inflammatory processes in her shoulders may be being exacerbated by components in her diet. Initially, not keen to make suggested dietary changes and within one week, achieved almost full range of motion.

Why might dietary change help sometimes? The patient history showed a previous but unrelated work injury requiring years of pain medication. Long term intake of such medications

may lead to compromised integrity (leakiness) of the intestinal lining. This allows immune stimulating proteins from foods such as grains and milk (even whole microbes) to leak across to where immune cells reside. Immune cells see such foreign proteins and microbes as signs of danger and become activated. They enter the blood stream, migrate to other sites of injury, and produce large amounts of inflammatory mediators that augment local inflammation increasing pain at those sites.

For this client, her strenuous shoulder-strength tests likely caused some local injury. Once such local shoulder inflammation began, it attracted circulating and activated gut-derived immune cells. These cells then exacerbated the local shoulder inflammation and prevented the shoulder tissues from moving from the inflammatory phase into the repair and resolution phase of the healing process.

In this case, dietary change likely reduced exposure of gut immune cells to immune stimulating proteins, resulting in a relatively quick reduction in shoulder pain. So, if you have unresolved shoulder (or neck) pain, among other causes, you may want to consider the impact of elements in your diet.

Pastor’s Corner Recently, I was talking to a man, a friend and a past colleague, who I hadn’t seen for several years. During those years, he had experienced major health issues; his wife had passed away and his career as a teacher had finished. He explained that he was impacted mostly, with the loneliness of his wife’s absence. Then, to lose his career was another setback, compounded by his health issues. I felt sad hearing his story of what had taken place over these last few years.

My friend then surprised me, by sharing with me that his faith in God enabled him to see past what had taken place and focus on what he needed to thank God for. He said, each day I get up I thank God for the air I breathe. He said I love the warmth of the sun and the refreshment of cold winters days. He said on some rainy days he liked to walk, to feel the rain falling on his head. He said it reminds me that life goes on, and I am just thankful. My friend shared that, on retirement, life had slowed down for him, so no longer was he so busy going to work each day. Now he was able to spend more time with family and friends, and that for him, that was far more valuable.

It was hard not to be impressed by my friend, how he had overcome significant challenges, yet had come out the other side, overwhelmingly thankful. That is a challenge for each of us, because it is so easy to become a victim, rather than a survivor of the challenges we face. My friend shared with me a verse of scripture, which had become special to him: “Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” (1 Thessalonians 5:18).

My prayer for each of you, is that you will turn to a loving God, and that you will learn the value of being thankful.

The art of upcycling furniture is on the rise. This is when a piece of furniture, whether it’s vintage or just unloved, is given a new lease on life. For Mulgoa local Sue Jeffries, it’s a great pastime and a craft she loves to teach in her workshops.

“I’ve always been a crafty person from a young age but got a little more serious about it around 20 years ago. This is when people started to admire my work and wanted me to redecorate pieces for them and that’s when I started teaching classes” explained Sue to the Mulgoa Valley Gazette.

Sue started a business called Second Time Round a couple of years ago, when she decided to become a chalk paint stockist, as there was no where to collect supplies around the area. She now stocks Artisan chalk and mineral paints, brushes, and accessories from her showroom in Mulgoa. Sue is also the Australian distributor for Hokus Pokus and their beautiful range of furniture transfers and supplies all shops around Australia that she imports from South Africa.

“My workshops on upcycling furniture and wares are held regularly for people who want to learn how to change the look of their own furniture without spending big money to replace them. This enables them to give it a whole new look at a fraction of the price of replacing furniture and saves on landfill.

For $120 plus some paint and brushes, it’s a fun filled day held each month at the beautiful historic property Winbourne at Mulgoa” Sue said.

Most of Sue’s students leave amazed at what they can create in just a few hours.

“I have all different people from all walks of life pass through my door to learn this craft. This includes Mums who simply want something for themselves. I see people going through grief and they see it as a part of their healing process and helps them deal with what they are going through. People who suffer depression tell me how good it is for them as it takes away what they are generally feeling into a more relaxed world” reflected Sue. “And there are people who simply love to create” she added.

Sue will be running Christmas workshops in September and October this year.

More Than $1 Billion Committed to Bradfield City Centre The NSW Government has committed $1.15 billion to kick start work on the Bradfield City Centre, supporting thousands of jobs on the doorstep of the new Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport.

Premier Gladys Berejiklian said the funding paves the way for work on the project to begin this year, starting the creation of a world class city precinct that will support up to 17,600 highly skilled jobs.

“This is another exciting step forward in realising the Government’s vision for this city-building project,” Ms Berejiklian said.

“We have named the new Aerotropolis city, Bradfield, and now work is set to begin to turn what is essentially a paddock today into a thriving global city centre”.

This commitment from the NSW Government includes $975.5 million in enabling works to establish, remediate and allow site access to about 100 hectares of land, driving the COVID-19 economic recovery not only in NSW, but across the nation.

The funding will also help to create a key Indo-Pacific economic hub, unleashing international investment in advanced manufacturing, aerospace and defence, agri-business, pharma, freight and logistics, health, and education.

NSW Treasurer Dominic Perrottet said this vital investment would lay the foundations for Bradfield to be transformed into a worldclass precinct that will drive jobs now and into the future.

“Bradfield City will be the next jewel in Sydney’s crown and we’re putting in the groundwork to deliver an iconic city that will unlock new economic opportunities, particularly for the people of Western Sydney,” Mr Perrottet said.

“The pandemic has shown us the importance of investing in our own backyard and this investment will create a precinct that will be home to businesses and industries that will create jobs not just today, but into the future as well”.

Minister for Jobs, Investment, Tourism and Western Sydney Stuart Ayres said there is also funding to establish the First Building in the Bradfield City Centre and for a four-year pilot of the New Education and Training Model (NETM).

“The government has committed $138.2 million for the First Building which includes a $24.9 million high-tech facility which will house $22.9 million worth of shared-use equipment for research institutions and industry to collaborate,” Mr Ayres said.

“The NETM is a new model of tertiary education aimed at helping advanced industries access skilled labour. We are dedicating $37.4 million to the program over five years to provide more than 7,000 courses for almost 3,000 students.”

True to form, COVID continues to keep us on our toes. With recent outbreaks across Sydney, we are reminded to stay vigilant.

July is always a great month, not only is it the month I celebrate another year of memories and experiences I have gained along the way but it’s also a timely reminder that we’re ‘almost’ half way through Winter.

Although I do love the opportunity to recharge during Winter. Life seems to slow down a little, allowing us some time to soak up the warmth of the heater, devour our favourite home-made soups and catch up on Netflix (am I right?).
