Mount Schoenstatt, A Place Of Pilgrimage Mount Schoenstatt at Mulgoa is the home of a beautiful Shrine where not only Catholics but people from many other religions visit to find peace and grace. With up to 1000 visitors each week, the Shrine is the centre of blessing for many people. It is where they seek solace and balance in their hectic lives, some for just a few minutes and others bring their families for the day, enjoying the surrounds and time in the Shrine.

The Shrine has been nominated as a place of pilgrimage for the Jubilee Year of Mercy. A special day will be held on Sunday 30th December, as the Shrine is recognised as a “Holy Door of Mercy”. The day will commence at 11.00 am with Mass, official opening, BYO Picnic lunch followed by a talk on “Encountering God’s Mercy” for families. Children’s program available.

All welcome On the 19th December, from 7.00pm to 8.30pm the Schoenstatt Sisters of Mary extend an invitation to join them for an evening of Carol singing.

Please bring a blanket or chairs. You are welcome to have a picnic tea with your family and friends in the grounds before the Carols commence.

Children are encouraged to come dressed as angels and shepherds.

FROM THE EDITOR Here we are, our last publication for 2015.

Someone once told me, that as we get older, each year passes by faster. The reasoning said to be behind this is mathematically based , in that the older you become, each year represents a smaller and smaller portion of your life. When you are ONE, a year is your whole life , whilst when you are 40, one year is only a small fraction of your life (1/40th)and each year seems to pass faster.

Christmas is a time to spend with loved ones and those near and dear.

The Sydney Science Park, a proposal that would see 12,000 jobs created, 3,400 dwellings built and attract the worldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s leading scientific professionals and organisations to our doorstep is currently on public exhibition for rezoning.

The stained glass windows in St Thomas church are exceptionally beautiful for a rural church and were installed in 1868 in memory of George Cox by his family. The triple east window has three unusual and interesting scenes.

The left window illustrates the confession of Thomas with the inscription ‘My Lord and my God’ (John 20) The addition of the pastoralist’s hat with a riding crop beside it is a reference to George Cox as a local landholder.

The middle window ‘Behold an Israelite indeed, in whom is no guile’ (John 1) relates to Jesus meeting Nathanael under a fig tree. The right window is ‘He was made known to them in the breaking of bread’ (Luke 24) and shows the two disciples at Emmaus in the evening of Jesus’ resurrection.

All three scenes involve recognitions of Christ’s divinity. The left and right scenes are after his resurrection, representing

the promise of life after death, which by extension applies also to George Cox and consolation for those mourning him.

The central panel with its reference to guilelessness has been suggested that it is a reference to George Cox’s character.

George, one of the three sons of William Cox, built the lovely mansion, Winbourne, in 1824 and had it extended in 1842 to accommodate his 10 children.

The eight side windows are unusual glass quarry tiles cast

by Powell and Sons and were donated by the Cox family and parishioners to commemorate peace after the Crimean war (1853 -1856).

The eyelet window directly above the east window was installed in 1880 and depicts hands and a dove. It symbolises God the Father and God the Holy Spirit.

The windows can be seen every Sunday at our regular morning service at 8.30am with the sun shining through from the east. On Sunday 20th December the service will be at 7pm for ‘The Christmas Story with Carols’. This will be a beautiful candle lit service with the windows lit up from outside, followed by supper. Everyone is welcome.

The Christmas Eve communion service at St Thomas is 11pm and the only service on Christmas Day is 9am. The Christmas Eve service at St Pauls in Warragamba is 6pm. Come along and celebrate the birth of Jesus.

Matt Olliffe is on extended leave until the beginning of next year and in the meantime, Howard Barnett is acting as Minister.

Latest @ Luddenham by Wayne Willmington The Northern Road New Route On the 12th of November, the RMS announced that the Eastern option had been selected as the new route for Northern Road (Stage 4) a month earlier than expected. It was certainly the most favoured option by locals, but it is not good news for those that will be effected, we all feel for those residents. This option will mean that Luddenham can survive, as the RMS have confirmed both ends of the existing Northern Road will connect to the new road and Park Road will still end on the existing road. All Luddenham Heritage Buildings will be left alone and not affected with this option.

The RMS are currently designing and working on the plans, once the preliminary information is available, they will be presenting it to the community and stakeholders to gain further feedback.

The Western Sydney Airport Draft Environmental Impact Statement 2015 It is just over a month since the Federal Government released The Western Sydney Airport Draft Environmental Impact Statement and have been running Community Consultation Sessions throughout the broader community. I would urge anyone who has any thoughts or comments to lodge them before the 18th of December (the closing date). Submissions can be made on the Western Sydney Airport web page, it is important that you have your say. Luddenham residents seemed to be most concerned about ground noise of the Airport and dust & noise during construction.

November saw the end of Vicaryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Winery as it is now closed and about to be bulldozed to make way for the airport.

Almost 100 years ago, Vicaryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Winery opened its doors in 1923, while the Woolshed a much older building first started operating in its current form in the mid 1970â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s.

Plans are well under way for the 2016 Luddenham Show on the 20th & 21st of February. It will be 125 years since the Society was first formed.

I can now confirm that Sydneyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s New Wonderland is not coming to Adams Road Luddenham, as rumours are now floating around indicating it could be Luddenham Road.

What Have I Been Talking With Parents About This Past Month?

A lot of parents have been very interested to know how they can determine whether the consequences they are giving their child’s mistaken behaviour are fair and reasonable, and designed to address the behaviour.

First of all, consequences need to be related to the mistaken behaviour. Sometimes this can be tricky. But if the child has been jumping on the lounge, then taking away the soccer game on Saturday doesn’t make sense. The consequence is not related to the behaviour. A more appropriate consequence is allowing the child to sit on the floor for a little while.

I use a checklist…

• Is it positive?

• Am I guiding and educating my child?

• Am I teaching my child new skills and behaviours?

• Will it maintain our relationship?

I will give you a few scenarios, to see how this works.

Scenario 1 A mother told me once how her parent would rip up her homework if she made one mistake. She would then have to do the homework all over again.

What do you think? Which of the above criteria does this meet?

Scenario 2 A mother told me how her young child was fussing at the dinner table. The mother calmly put the child’s plate to the side, and calmly told her child that she would return the dinner when the child could sit and be calm. The child was able to settle herself quickly and the mother returned the dinner saying “thank you for sitting so calmly, you are able to eat your dinner better when you sit still”.

What do you think? Which of the above criteria does this consequence meet?

Cheat's Roast Turkey Super Easy • Time 1hr 45min • Serves 6

2kg Frozen Rolled Turkey Breast 1 Orange, Juiced 40ml (2 Tablespoons) Olive Oil Rosemary Sprigs + Gravy, to Serve

Preheat oven to 180°C. Defrost turkey in the fridge overnight. Place in a large roasting pan with the foil on and roast for one hour 15 minutes. Remove the foil.

Combine orange juice and oil together and use to baste the turkey breast. Return to the oven and roast for a further 30 minutes.

Slice the turkey, garnish with rosemary and serve with gravy.

Line an 8 cup-capacity metal pudding steamer with plastic wrap, allowing a 2cm overhang.

Break 10 biscuits into 2cm pieces. Combine ice-cream, biscuit pieces, custard, marshmallows, coconut, nuts and raspberries in a bowl. Spoon mixture into prepared steamer. Smooth top. Top with remaining biscuits. Freeze overnight or until firm.

Stand pudding at room temperature for 5 minutes to soften. Turn out onto a plate. Carefully peel away wrap. Drizzle with Ice Magic.

Top with sprinkles and cachous. Serve with custard.

Swimming Pool and Spa Safety Statistics During the hot summer months, Australians love the water which is why it is so important that we all stay safe when we’re in, on, or around it.

The Royal Life Saving website provides statistics that show just how dangerous water can be for small children under 5 years old.

• Drowning is a leading cause of preventable death in children under 5 years of age • On average, over the last decade, a child under 5 years of age drowns every week in Australia • For every drowning death it is estimated that three children were admitted to hospital as a result of an immersion incident • For children under 5 years of age, home swimming pools are the most common site in which drowning occurs • Children drown all year round Pool and Spa Safety Actions to help prevent your child from drowning include: • Active Child Supervision – small children should not be left alone while in or near a swimming pool or spa.

• Ensure your swimming pool or spa has an effective fence or approved safety barrier restrictions.

• Check your pool safety barrier regularly and carry out any required maintenance.

• Never block, tie or leave pool gates open.

• Keep items away from pool fences that can be used for climbing.

• Ensure spas have locking lids where not fenced.

• Display a current CPR chart visible from the pool or spa.

Woman Caught High-Range Drink Driving Two Times Within Three Hours A woman has been caught high-range drink driving twice within three hours.

Around 11.20am (Saturday 14 November 2015), police stopped a Mazda MX5 which was being driven in an erratic manner in the westbound lanes of the M4 at Emu Plains.

The driver, a 61-year-old woman from Mulgoa, was breath-tested, returning a positive indication for alcohol.

She was taken to Penrith Police Station and submitted to a breath analysis test; it returned a reading of 0.252. The woman’s licence was suspended on the spot and she was issued with a field court attendance notice for highrange drink-driving.

Less than three hours later, around 2pm, police again stopped the woman as she drove a Mazda MX5 eastbound along the M4 Motorway at Jamisontown. She failed a roadside breath-test and was taken back to Penrith Police Station for a breath analysis, which returned a reading of 0.222.

She was charged with an additional count of high-range drink-driving, and driving whilst suspended, before being granted conditional bail to appear before Penrith Local Court on 10 December 2015.

‘Tis the Season to (over) Spend I guess it’s my inner child but I just love Christmas! The tree’s, the lights, the buzz of the crowds and the cheesy music playing in the stores, call me crazy but I love it all!

But Christmas can also be expensive. Loan repayments are missed in December and January more than any other time of year. Credit Card debt also increases significantly and sadly, over spending at Christmas starts a downward spiral that ends in financial ruin for some people.

To avoid a financial hangover the best thing you can do is create a Christmas Budget.

It’s really easy and will take you just 10 or 15 minutes. Here’s what you do; • Write a list of all your Christmas expenses. Include everything, even the wrapping paper and ribbon. Assign a cost for each item.

• Write down the name of everyone you need to buy gifts for.

• Make sure you include holiday expenses.

• Even if you’re not going away, keeping the kids entertained can be expensive, so budget for this too.

• Once you’ve got everything listed, calculate the total.

With total in hand you can then decide if it is manageable. You may choose to fund some of this amount with a Credit Card and if so, use a card with a low or 0% rate and plan to have it repaid before next Christmas rolls around. Expect to pay 3% of the outstanding debt as minimum repayment, so $150 per month for $5,000.

Finding Meaning in the Holidays and Christmas The holidays and Christmas are a time to take a good look around you. Not to just give thanks or show appreciation through some materialistic and commercial sense, but to understand that you have a lot. Despite everything, you are alive, relatively well, and have a life filled with people that love you. Yes, you may not realize it or even believe it to be true, but it is nonetheless. You may feel unloveable, unloved, unhappy, stressed out. But those are the simple untruths we tell ourselves every day. The frequency of the telling doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t make them come true.

I have no magical answers, no words of wisdom or insight into how you can get to a point in your life where you can feel again- feel true to yourself, feel happiness at the life that youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve chosen. Heavy Bins Wollondilly Shire Council is reminding residents that as we come into summer, garden organics bins tend to get heavier due to fresh lawn clippings. Most of this weight is in the moisture content of the lawn clippings. Collection trucks are fitted with a limit switch that will not allow a bin over 80Kg to be lifted.

If your bin is over 80Kg it will not be collected because of excess weight and it will be left on your kerbside and tagged.

You will be asked to take some of the items out of the bin so it can be collected. Once the bin weight comes down under 80Kg you can ring the waste hotline on 1800 805 305 (within 2 working days) and the collection truck will return to empty your bin at no additional charge.

Some tips to reduce the weight in your garden organics bin: 1. Put your garden organics bin out every fortnight, even if it is only partially full. These smaller amounts clump and over progressive weeks can cause your bin to exceed 80Kg. 2. Do not squash grass clippings into the bin. Pushing too much in will increase the weight and moisture content.

3. Purchase an additional Garden Organics Bins. ( $90 per annum) 4. Compost grass clippings and prunings in a compost bay, bin or tumbler. Council runs free composting talks throughout the year.

We also remind residents that bins should be placed out the night before collection or by 6am of the collection day.

Diagnosis Facet Joint Disease â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Not a Sentence for Eternal Pain I often see facet joint arthritis on scan reports in clinic. According to some research between 15-45% of neck pain, 48% of thoracic pain and 54-67% lower back pain can be attributed to facet joint arthritis, while pain may also be referred to areas such as the head, arms, chest wall, buttocks and legs.1 So what are facet joints and why might arthritis cause pain?

The picture below shows that individual vertebra are joined to each other by two types of joints: a disc joint; and 2 facet joints.

Facet joints take only a small amount of your bodyweight.

Their main job is to guide & limit movement of spine. They prevent excessive rotation & forward bending, and protect vertebrae from sheer (forward-pulling) forces. Facet joints have a good nerve supply and, if they become inflamed due to degenerative changes associated with the wear and tear of age, pain can result. But which type of back pain is actually due to facet joints?

Very careful research on back pain sufferers showed that it was impossible to find â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;clinicallyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; any â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;typical patternâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; of pain referral due to facet joint arthritis.2 Facet joints â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; be established as the source of some chronic back pain but only via a very complex procedure called a diagnostic block. Otherwise itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s difficult to say whether facet joint arthritis is the source of a personâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s back pain or not. The best we can do is say â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;maybeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;!

Although anti-inflammatory drugs are often prescribed as first line treatment when facet joint disease is suspected3, radiofrequency neurotomy (cutting the nerve to the joint) or a lumbar facet joint nerve block (anaesthetic injection) are currently the only medically validated treatments for true facet joint pain4 . Importantly, both the diagnosis & the validated treatments are involved & complex, very invasive & not without risk.

Even when anti inflammatory drugs have failed, many people with facet joint arthritis and back pain typically respond well to muscle elongation therapy. Specific manual therapy techniques & dry needling, can reduce pain & inflammation, and often remove the need for ongoing medications. Jennie Smith BVSc (Hons 2) Jennie grew up in the northern suburbs of Sydney where she first decided she would become a Veterinarian at the age of five.

She spent two years studying Medical Science at the University of Sydney before entering the Veterinary Science degree which she completed in 2000. Early in her career Jennie spent time working in the north of England and in Wales. She was also able to pursue her interest in wildlife by volunteering at the Veterinary Quarantine Centre at Taronga Zoo for two

years. Since this time Jennie has worked at various small animal hospitals in western Sydney.

Jennie is passionate about improving the welfare of animals and making a difference to all her patients. She feels all her patients are equally important and strives to make a difference through both prevention and treatment.

Jennie is currently working part time as she has two young children, two dogs and a crazy feline who keep her busy the rest of the week.

Jill the Puppy Preschool Trainer is Retiring Jill has been training puppies and adolescent dogs at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital for the last 13-14 years. Jill is retiring to travel around Australia.

Rachel and Lizzie, our veterinary nurses, will be taking over from Jill. They have been trained by Jill for the last month and are undertaking the Delta Dog Training program.
