Latest @ Luddenham by Wayne Willmington

Last month, the Luddenham Uniting Church celebrated its 133rd Anniversary. On the 24th November, they dedicated a stone monument to acknowledge past residents that were buried in unmarked graves. These graves have been there for over a hundred years and there are no records or any way to identify the occupants of the graves. Well done Luddenham Uniting Church.

Preparation for the 116th Luddenham Show has started.

It will be held on the 7th and 8th March and the committee are currently looking for sponsors, volunteers as well as ideas for entertainment and stall holders. The first look at our new airport has now been unveiled, with architects appointed to design the state-of-the-art terminal precinct at Western Sydney International (NancyBird Walton) Airport. Western Sydney Airport Chief Executive Officer Graham Millett said an architectural team consisting of London-based Zaha Hadid Architects and Cox Architecture in Sydney was selected from more than 40 entrants as the winners of the terminal precinct design competition. “The brief was to design an airport that the people of Western Sydney can be proud of and provide a real sense of place that pays tribute to the natural landforms, history and features of Greater Sydney” Mr Millett said. “While the exterior of the terminal complements the natural landscape beautifully, we’ve always said that our focus was on the customer journey within the terminal and that really shines through in these concept designs”.

Luddenham will once again host the 2019 NSW PGA Open

and it will be played at Twin Creeks Golf and Country Club. The tournament champion will be crowned at the conclusion of 72 holes of play commencing on Thursday 28 November. The winner will be crowned on Sunday 1, sharing in a prize pool of $400,000.

With the current fire situation, it is worth mentioning Luddenham Showground is a Neighbourhood Safer Place in times of emergencies. You can bring animals to the showground including horses and cattle and you will be required to stay with your animals on the showground. It is a Place of Last Resort in bush fire emergencies only. Neighbourhood Safer Places are to be used when all other options in your bush fire survival plan can’t be put into action safely.

Wollondilly Council hosted the opening of the greatly anticipated Warragamba Inclusive Play Space, ‘Livvi’s Place’ on Saturday 30 November from 11am to 1pm at Civic Park, Warragamba.

The inclusive play space was officially opened by the Hon Angus Taylor MP, Member for Hume and Cr Matthew Deeth, Mayor of Wollondilly.

Council partnered with the Touched by Olivia Foundation to develop this facility for all children, with funding also provided by the Federal Government, the State Government and the community.

Mayor Matthew Deeth said, “This is an exciting project that was designed according to the principles of inclusive play, along with feedback received from the community.”

“We wanted the opening to be a real celebration, recognising that this was something the community had been advocating for over a number of years” he said.

The formalities included a performance by the Tharawal Lyrebird Dancers and was attended by the Hon Nathaniel Smith MP, Member for Wollondilly; Fiona Morrison, Commissioner for Open Spaces and Parklands; and Rebecca Ho, Director of Touched by Olivia.

A free sausage sizzle was provided by Wollondilly Rotary North and free soft serve ice-cream was also available on the day. Entertainment included face painting, a balloon artist, a clown and children’s magician.

The play space features a large climbing net, wheelchair accessible carousel, a flying fox, swings, water play, musical items, and a Changing Place amenities facility. It will offer play opportunities for all abilities and ages for many years to come.

Celebrate Jesus At its heart Christmas is a celebration. But a celebration of what? We say, “Happy Christmas.” We sing, “Joy to the world”, but why should we be happy? What joy is there?

At Christmas we remember the words of an angel to a startled bunch of shepherds on that first Christmas morning recorded for us in the Bible’s book of Luke; “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all people. Today in the town of David a Saviour has been to you; he is Christ the Lord.”

Luke’s account of Jesus’ birth reveals two important things.

First, Luke anchors this event firmly in history. It is terribly sad when people jump on the bandwagon of dismissing Jesus’ existence without checking the facts. In Luke’s account we see real people in a real place at a real time. In other words, if you were there 2000 years ago you would have been just as startled as the shepherds! Let me encourage you; carefully investigate the facts for yourself.

Second, Luke reveals the necessity for Jesus’ coming. Luke tells us that Jesus came as a “Saviour.”

The reality is that our lives are out of step with God. We see it in our world. We see it in the people around us. And if we’re honest, we see it in ourselves. The angel declares that Jesus has come to rescue us from the consequences of ignoring God and keeping him on the sidelines of our life.

Jesus has come to give us new life with God when we put our faith and trust in Jesus.

Therefore, we can say “Happy Christmas.” Therefore, we can sing “Joy to the world.”

New Walking Group for Wollondilly The community of Wollondilly Shire now has a new walking group, Warragamba Walkers, which formed last month.

The local group meets every Monday and Thursday night from 6:00pm to 7:00pm at Warragamba Sports Ground.

Everyone of all ages and abilities is welcome to join the group, where they can choose to walk for 15 minutes, 30 minutes or for the full hour.

They came together for the first time on the 4th of November, with the aim of its members to stay fit and healthy in the company of friends and have fun.

“Our motivation to start the Warragamba Walkers came through consultations and chats we had with the local community and different groups. We felt it was important to do something healthy together where we could help each other and enjoy ourselves” said Lee Hodder, Group Organiser.

The team of walkers currently has 14 members, with numbers growing each week.

Their walking route follows the athletics oval at the Sports Ground; however, the option is there for members to provide ideas for future areas.

“It’s important to have groups like this as it includes all the community of all ages, abilities and health levels, whilst creating sustainable connections and allowing for participation and ownership. Over the past weeks that it has been running, members are talking and listening to one another while walking, motivating one another, asking how their day has been and meeting new friends. They’re smiling when they finish walking, which is fantastic” delighted Lee. “We hope the Warragamba Walkers grows in numbers where we are a community facilitated group that everyone wants to be a part of” ended Lee. They also have their own t-shirts, which are available for $25 each. $5 from the sale of each t-shirt is donated to the Warragamba Silverdale Neighbourhood Centre, which goes back into the community.

Pastor’s Corner Another Christmas is near. There is often so much to do in preparation for this season - food, drink, gifts to be purchased, homes to be prepared, arrangements made to visit family or friends or preparing to take a well-earned holiday break. For some, this is a time of loneliness. Family or friends may be living elsewhere, there may be grief for the loss of loved ones and hurt from broken relationships that you no longer have contact with.

The first Christmas is the story of the birth of a baby, called Jesus. Joseph and Mary are a young Jewish couple. A census has been called and they travel from Nazareth to Bethlehem, a journey of around 145 kilometres. The journey is arduous, Mary is pregnant, and the birth is imminent. Like many parents at such a time, they are anxious. Bethlehem is busy and there is no room at the inn for them to stay, so a stable will be the birthplace for this child.

The stable would have been cold, dark and foul smelling and not the place that you would choose for any child to be born. But this baby boy called Jesus is God’s Son; he has come down to earth for a purpose and You and I are that purpose.

Jesus came to provide each of us with a way out from God’s judgement. Jesus stood in our place, for the forgiveness of our sins. Sins can be big things like murder, or small things like not telling the truth and we all sin.

Seven hundred years before Jesus’ birth, a Hebrew prophet named Isaiah wrote this, “For unto us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders.

And he will be called Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace”. (Isaiah 9:6-7) As you celebrate Christmas, take some time to consider the true reason for this season. Perhaps too, may you find time to share your joy with others, over meals, through conversations and gift giving.

Whether you live in Wallacia, Warragamba or even Silverdale, one of the first signs of Christmas each year is the amazing display of brightly coloured lights that appear all over the homes in our community. The 2019 Wollondilly Shire Council Christmas Lights Competition is well underway, showcasing the best lights and displays in the area, with the winners announced at an Awards Presentation on 13th December. So, what does it take to have the best Christmas lights?

Last year’s winner of the Best Lit Small House and Garden and Grand Champion of the Wollondilly Shire Council Christmas Lights Competition, Sarah Anderson of Silverdale, knows what it takes.

“I’ve been entering the Christmas lights competition for about 5 years now. Each year, I go bigger and bigger. When we found out that we were judged the Best Lit Small House and Garden and eventually the Grand Champion last year, it was such a surprise! It was great that all the hard work had finally paid off” explained Sarah to the Mulgoa Valley Gazette.

You could say that Sarah was the architect behind her Christmas lights display. She was responsible for the layout and the design of the spectacular lights, with some help from her family to complete the project.

“I did pretty much all of the lights display. The kids liked to watch and help when they could. I asked my husband for a Santa sleigh, so he built me a full sized one. He helped in that way” said Sarah.

What does the Anderson family enjoy most about Christmas?

“What we enjoy most about Christmas is sitting under all the Christmas lights, listening to carols with our family and friends and talking to all the new people we meet that come to see our lights” smiled Sarah.

How do you handle Holiday Season?

December can be a time of stress and overwhelm - parties, school assemblies, awards nights and shopping. Everyone gets tired and this can lead to frayed tempers and impatience.

About 6 weeks out from Christmas we can sometimes hear parents say, “if you aren’t good, you won’t get any Christmas presents”.

That’s tricky for the following reasons: • Do you really mean it? Are you going to follow through and not give your child any Christmas presents? It’s probably an empty threat (and the kids know it).

• The consequence is not immediate enough.

• The consequence probably isn’t related to the mistaken behaviour.

• What does ‘good’ or ‘nice’ mean? It’s too vague.

All the above can lead to an escalation of mistaken behaviour, which can make everyone’s life more difficult.

The holiday season is supposed to be a time of kindness, peace and goodwill. You are allowed to take some time to breathe and enjoy. This includes giving your kids and yourself some downtime to reduce the overwhelm.

Deal with your children’s behaviour in a calm and assertive manner. Tell them what they are doing wrong (for example, “you are yelling at your sister”) and what to do instead (for example, “speak kindly and calmly”).

Deal with your child’s behaviour at the time that it occurs and give a consequence that is related to the mistaken behaviour (for example, take away the toy that the children are fighting over).

Give an instruction a maximum of two times. The more times you ask, the greater the risk that you will get frustrated. If the child does not comply after two requests, you can issue a consequence (related to the behaviour of course).

Another year is over. It’s a cliché but it’s true – treasure the moments you have with your kids. They will be adults one day, and you will wonder where the time went. You owe it to yourself and your kids to make the time as positive as possible.

Get the undesirable behaviour over and done with quickly so you have more fun and times of connection. In the end, that’s all that really matters.

What’s Happening @WSNC With Christmas and School Holidays almost here, it’s a busy time of year for the Warragamba Silverdale Neighbourhood Centre with several events happening.

Blingo Bingo Blingo Bingo will take place on Friday 6th December at Warragamba Town Hall, with doors open at 6:00pm. Prepaid tickets are $15 or $20 at the door.

This is a WSNC Christmas Fundraiser, where attendees can shop for a cause.

This event is a Ladies Night for ages 18+.

Light snacks and refreshments will be provided.

The night will include 4 games of bingo, fashion parade and other stalls to buy Christmas presents.

All funds raised will go back into the community to help families in need for Christmas.

Ryan Cloey, a Year 5 student at Luddenham Public School, has achieved outstanding results in sport and is proving to be a star of the future. This year, Ryan has been selected for the PSSA Sydney West Touch Football and the Penrith District PSSA Rugby League Teams and has achieved outstanding results in athletics.

Ryan was awarded the Penrith Zone Junior Boys Athletics Champion and at the Sydney West Regional Athletics Carnival, where he came first in Discus, second in Shot Put and seventh in Long Jump.

He also competed in the Under 10 Boy’s Discus at the National Athletics Championships in Darwin in September, where he finished in third place and received a bronze medal.

Mini Christmas Puddings

Ingredients

One chocolate mud cake White chocolate (buds) One packet of raspberry lollies Method

1. You need a chocolate mud cake that is already made from the shops. Use a teaspoon to scoop the mud cake, like ice cream. Roll the mud cake into little balls.

2. Ask your helper to cut up a packet of raspberry lollies into small pieces.

3. Put the white chocolate into a microwave bowl. This next step is for your helper too, which is melting the chocolate. They need to reduce the power on the microwave to medium. Heat the white chocolate in the microwave for 30 - 90 seconds.

4. Remove the bowl from the microwave. Your helper needs to mix the white chocolate. It should be soft and not hard. Use a spoon to dab on little bits on to the top of the balls of chocolate mud cake. It looks like white frosting.

5. Put the cut up raspberry lollies on top of the white chocolate on the mud cake balls.

6. The mini Christmas puddings need to go in the fridge for an hour, until it sets.

7. Ready to serve.

Member for Mulgoa, Tanya Davies MP, has called on local employers to take on more trainees following the launch of a new $54.3 million NSW Government Budget initiative to make government-subsidised traineeships fee-free.

Traineeships, through the NSW Smart and Skilled vocational education and training (VET) system, will join apprenticeships in being fee free from 1 January 2020.

Minister for Skills and Tertiary Education Geoff Lee said the NSW Government would be picking up the tab for the fees on all new traineeships, including school-based traineeships.

“Our investment in fee free traineeships, coupled with the $285 million initiative that’s made apprenticeships fee-free, demonstrates that we are serious about getting people into sustainable work and addressing the skills shortage” Mr Lee said.

Minister for Education and Early Childhood Learning Sarah Mitchell said a skilled workforce is one of the most important factors in delivering high quality early childhood education.

“This announcement of the NSW Government’s investment to fund the student fees for Smart and Skilled eligible trainees is an important step in ensuring a skilled workforce to deliver high quality early childhood education and care” Ms Mitchell said.

“It’s encouraging that the most popular traineeships are in early childhood education with over 10,000 students since 2015 taking up a traineeship” Ms Mitchell said.

Supper with Spirit a Success!

Last month the District Gazette hosted their first ever fundraising event, Supper With Spirit, raising money for Lung Foundation Australia. Guests enjoyed an evening of delight as Ghost Whisperer Suzie used her spiritual gift of psychic mediumship to relay messages to loved ones. It was an emotional night full of laughing, crying and of course, coming together to support a great cause.

The night was also an opportunity to raise awareness of Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF), which is a rare lung disease in which the tissue around the air sacs within the lungs become thickened and scarred. This scarring makes the lungs stiff which makes it increasingly difficult to breathe. This slows the efficient delivery of oxygen into the bloodstream where it is needed to be transported to the rest of the body. Idiopathic, suggests ‘no known cause’ and currently there is no cure for those suffering with IPF. There were many winners on the night with over $2,000 worth of prizes generously donated by Citadines Connect Sydney Airport, The Day Spa Penrith – Jorja James Spa, Salt Therapy Wellness Centre, Emu Wellness, NIX on Park Lane Jewelry, Elsker Oils with Julie, Aussie Grown Catering, Michal Gabriel Beauty and Brow, Our Penrith, Lavilin Australia, Michelle Munday (Lorraine Lea Independent Stylist), Essential Bodyworks and Action Organising.

Communities Condemn State Government Proposal to Raise the Warragamba Dam Wall The communities of Blue Mountains City and Wollondilly Shire came together last month to condemn the State Government proposal to raise the Warragamba Dam wall.

A Community Forum, hosted by the Mayors of Blue Mountains City and Wollondilly Shire Councils, attracted almost 200 attendees, while hundreds also watched the event that was streamed live on social media.

Blue Mountains Mayor Mark Greenhill, who started proceedings by acknowledging the devastation caused by bush fires in NSW and Queensland recently and expressing solidarity to those affected by the fires, said the Warragamba Dam proposal was immoral.

“Blue Mountains City Council’s principle concern is the inadequacy of the Environmental Impact Assessment process to date, including the assessment of impacts on World Heritage, Aboriginal Cultural Heritage and the ecological values of the Greater Blue Mountains National Park.

“We strongly urge the NSW Government to reconsider the proposed action, and to cease pursuing its plans to inundate this highly valuable and significant area”.

Wollondilly Shire Mayor Matthew Deeth said, “We are asking the State Government to undertake thorough engagement with the local communities and other stakeholders; to consult properly with the indigenous community whose cultural sites will be impacted; to fully examine the environmental impact the raising of the wall would have; and to seriously look at other options to address flood mitigation”.

Guest speaker, former NSW Minister for Environment and Minister for Emergency Services, The Hon Bob Debus, said, “Earlier this year the World Heritage committee of UNESCO stated that the inundation of the National Park is likely to have an impact on the outstanding values of the park.

“The World Heritage committee of UNESCO asked our Federal Government to ensure that the impact of the proposal to raise the wall should be vigorously assessed. It’s asked that an EIS assessing all potential impacts, including those on Aboriginal cultural heritage, should be submitted for review before any final decision is taken”.

Gundungurra woman and Warragamba resident, Taylor Clarke, 21, said she was angry about the proposal.

“I am angry, and I will continue to be angry, for as long as we have to fight for this, because we shouldn’t have to fight,” Ms Clarke said.

“As we take our next steps forward in this campaign, and indeed as a community, we need to think about the people who are going to walk this land after us. What precedent are we setting?

“When we win this campaign, think of the amazing example we are setting for the next generation, that we are willing to fight to protect our natural heritage.

“And heaven forbid, if we don’t (win this campaign), what are we showing the next generation? That we’re willing to destroy a National Park for development. To put people in danger. To put people’s lives on the line, for development.

“I’m very angry, but also very encouraged that all of you are here talking to us about this today”.

Panellists, including Member for Blue Mountains Trish Doyle, Gundungurra Elder Aunty Sharyn Halls, Total Environment Centre’s Saul Deane and Give a Dam campaign manager Harry Burkitt, also spoke and took questions from attendees at the event.

Santa Claus is Coming to Wallacia It’s that time of the year once again where the boys and girls of the community will get a very special visit from Santa Claus himself, when he joins the Wallacia Rural Fire Brigade for the Santa Run in Wallacia.

Pending the operational requirements of the brigade and their crew, the Santa Run will visit Wallacia on Tuesday 24th December (Christmas Eve), beginning at 3:00pm in the afternoon where the fire truck will begin at William Street. It’s a great opportunity to come and say hi to Santa and take photos. Santa will have lollies onboard for the kids during each stop. Don’t forget to listen out for the truck as it drives through the local streets.

Have Lower Back Pain? Then just get on the Bottle!

I ask many of my ‘lower-back pain’ patients to get on the bottle! Nothing like a stiff drink to ease back pain, right? Just kidding of course.

Patients lie down on a carpeted floor, place a foam roller (about the size of a standard wine bottle) under one side of the small of their back. The roller is placed either just to the left or to the right of the spine, never over the spine itself and patients breathe deeply in and out for 5-10 mins. The idea is to gently but deeply stretch lower back muscles beside the spine (using breaths) without bending the spine itself.

This simple activity helps ameliorate back pain generally and avoids an increase in pain that may happen due to daily activities, between clinic sessions. Some patients shouldn’t do this activity, so it’s important to be assessed first. Let’s see why such stretching often helps reduce back pain.

Scientists induce lower back pain in animals by injecting carrageenan to damage lower back tissues, causing inflammation, and infiltration of immune cells such as macrophages and neutrophils. Immune cells then release further signals that can exacerbate things, leading to ongoing pain and eventually to tissue fibrosis. Fibrosis is the formation of excess fibrous connective (scar) tissue in an organ or area during

any repair process that occurs in reaction to tissue injury.

After carrageenan injections, these animals can’t walk properly, and their lower back is much more sensitive to mechanical stimulus. In short, their backs are painful, it hurts animals to move and so they have shortened stride lengths and lower instra-step distances.

Studies have shown that low-amplitude static (non-cyclical) stretching stops fibrosis and inflammation. To test this in lower back inflammation, half the carrageen-injected animals underwent a stretching program. For 12 days, 10 minutes twice daily, animals did simple sustained back-stretching. Researchers found stretching: 1. lowered tissue inflammatory immune cells 2. decreased scar tissue formation 3. decreased mechanical sensitivity of the back 4. restored stride length and 5. restored intra-step distance, Appropriately done, stretching is an important therapy for musculoskeletal injuries, and patients who incorporate it often get better more quickly and with less suffering.
